The thesis of this paper is that when the indifference curve is concave to the origin, the optimal point on the budget line is not the corner solution on the highest (most north eastern) indifference curve, the analysis all too often offered in the literature, but, rather, somewhat paradoxically, the lowest (most south western) indifference curve. The economics profession, as articulated through the megaphone of intermediate micro economics texts, offers a mixed result in this regard. Some few do offer a correct analysis, but many do not; others ignore the issue entirely. The contribution of the present paper and the aim of our research is to provide a correction of the widespread but erroneous indifference curve analysis that appears in many of our intermediate microeconomics texts. Our methodology is one of contrast: we offer what we see as both the correct and the incorrect versions of indifference curve analysis.

Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) products are now often used to study the terrain due to their numerous advantages such as relatively low cost and ease of data collection. The ISOK project (pl: Informatyczny System Osłony Kraju – national hazard protection information system) developed elevation data for about 65% of the Polish territory. Parallel to the airborne laser scanning point cloud collection, additional products, such as orthophotomaps, digital terrain models (DTM), and digital surface models (DSM) were created. This resource is not only a reference material for the project, but also a valuable source of the analysis used in various fields of economy and science. Important features of the ISOK-data are the availability and their standardized format based on uniform technical conditions. The article presents the results of an experiment in which an attempt was made to use the digital elevation model with a resolution of 1 m based on airborne laser scanning data to determine concave terrain features using GIS tools. The ISOK-DTM has a height accuracy of 0.15 m for the outdoor areas, which makes it a better representation of small terrain forms than previous products. The research area is located at an undeveloped open ground with comparatively little variation of its shape for a long period. Several methods were tested to classify the terrain shape based of topographic attributes. Those methods led to similar locations of the concave features and further on coincide with results of the pre-analysis. Also, attention was drawn to the selection of the analysis parameters and their influence on the result. The results show the usefulness of ISOK’s DTM for locating field concave terrain shapes.

The forest line has been widely studied by a number of scientists representing various research disciplines. Changes in its position are an indicator of climate change. However, despite numerous studies, it is not always known what has the greatest influence on the position of the forest line. In the Tatras, which are Alpine moun-tains, the position of the forest line in places not disturbed by human activity or slope processes mainly depends on the annual mean air temperature and the number of days with negative temperature and its value in the warm season. The most unfavourable thermal conditions are found at the bottoms of concave landforms, just above the forest line. This thermal barrier effectively limits the upward movement of the forest line, even if the average annual temperature increases. Small concave landforms may have a higher vertical temperature gradient and lower air temperature values at their bottoms than larger and higher-lying forms.

The climate of a high-altitude postglacial cirque, such as Kozia Dolinka, is conducive to the occurrence of permafrost. Both the depth of permafrost and the area it covers, as well as the presence of year-round snow patches, can serve as indicators for assessing the impact of global warming on the climate of mountains, including the Tatras. With few meteorological stations to survey the remote and inaccessible high-altitude areas of the Tatra Mountains, any research must rely on measurements spanning limited time periods. Against this background, the 5-year series of temperature measurements from the Kozia Dolinka cirque obtained by the Institute of Geography and Spatial Organization of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IGiPZ PAN) can be used to analyze air temperature patterns on concave and convex terrain forms in the alpine climate zone if compared to the results of measurements from stations of the State Hydrological and Meteorological Service located nearby, i.e. the Kasprowy Wierch HighMountain Meteorological Observatory and the Hala Gąsienicowa Nival Research Station of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management, National Research Institute (IMGW-PIB). This study confirms that there is a relationship between air temperature and the formation and duration of snow cover on concave and convex terrain forms. It also reveals a hitherto unknown fact that concave terrain forms, i.e. postglacial cirques, of the alpine zone have milder thermal conditions in winter than convex terrain forms. The analyses highlight the need for further, more detailed research using modern automated meteorological stations.

In this article we apply an extension of a Leggett-Williams type fixed point theorem to a two-point boundary value problem for a 2n-th order ordinary differential equation. The fixed point theorem employs concave and convex functionals defined on a cone in a Banach space. Inequalities that extend the notion of concavity to 2n-th order differential inequalities are derived and employed to provide the necessary estimates. Symmetry is employed in the construction of the appropriate Banach space.

We prove that such an iteration semigroup has a selection which is also an iteration semigroup of linear continuous functions. Some conditions under which any subadditive function is periodic are presented. It is shown that the boundedness from below in a neighborhood of a point of a subadditive periodic (s.p.) function implies its nonnegativity, and the boundedness from above in a neighborhood of a point implies it nonnegativity and global boundedness from above. A necessary and sufficient condition for existence of a subadditive periodic extension of a function ƒ0 : [0, 1) ? R is given. The continuity, differentiability of a s.p. function is discussed, and an example of a continuous nowhere differentiable s.p. function is presented. The functions which are the sums of linear functions and s.p. functions are characterized. The refinements of some known results on the continuity of subadditive functions are presented.

Cycloidal (also called epicyclical or convex-concave) gears are used less often than common involute gears, which are very easy to manufacture and can be modified by corrections to the gear profile. Cycloidal gears are very sensitive to the proper axial distance between the pinion and the gear. The main advantage of convex-concave gears is the lowering of the contact pressure due to teeth flanks meshing and also the lowering of the slide ratios compared to involute gears. The calculation of the selected geometrical parameters and the contact pressure between the teeth flanks of the cycloidal gearing is described in the presented article.

A relatively simple proof is given for Haimo’s theorem that a meromorphic function with suitably controlled Schwarzian derivative is a concave mapping. More easily verified conditions are found to imply Haimo’s criterion, which is now shown to be sharp. It is proved that Haimo’s functions map the unit disk onto the outside of an asymptotically conformal Jordan curve, thus ruling out the presence of corners.

In this paper we have investigated the existence, uniqueness and possibility of constructing of two-sided approximations to the positive solution of a heat conduction problem with two sources. The investigation is based on methods in operator equations theory in half-ordered spaces. In this case we have considered a nonlinear operator equation that corresponds to the initial boundary value problem in a cone of non-negative continous functions. The properties of the corresponding operator define conditions which provide the existence and uniqueness of the solution. The conditions link the parameters of the problem implicitly meaning that they don’t provide the range of allowed values but need to be verified for each specific parameters value set separately. During the investigation we have provided the scheme of a two-sided iteration process which must satisfy the conditions in order to converge to the positive solution from both sides. The computational experiment have been conducted in two domains – unit disk and unit half disk. We have applied both two-sided approximations method and Green’s quasifunction method for the problem solving. The obtained results are presented as a surface and level lines plots and also as a table. The results in corresponding domains obtained by different methods have been compared with each other.

The article presents an operational tests of worm gearboxes. Test bench trails were conducted for three gearbox types. Two of these gearboxes were manufactured using modern methods with conical endmills. The only difference between the two is the tooth profile. A ZK2 worm with a concave tooth profile and Archimedes’ screw was used in the gearboxes. The third analyzed gearbox was a commercial gearbox with a ZK1 worm. When comparing the results of the analysis, the efficiency and load carrying capacity of the ZK2 worm gearbox is the highest and greatest respectively. The higher load carrying capacity of the ZK2 worm with concave teeth in comparison to the Archimedes’ screw is confirmed by Hertz’s theory. The results show, that the meshing area for ZK2 worm gearboxes is greater than Archimedes’ screw. The confirmed increase of usage indicators of concave profile worm gearboxes can lead to their widespread production and application. The higher efficiency of the gearbox results in lower usage costs.
W artykule przedstawiono badania eksploatacyjne przekładni ślimakowych. Badaniom stanowiskowym poddano trzy przekładnie. Dwie z nich zostały wykonane nową technologią z wykorzystaniem stożkowych narzędzi trzpieniowych. Różnica pomiędzy nimi dotyczyła wyłącznie zarysu kół. Zastosowano przekładnie ze ślimakiem ZK2 o wklęsłym zarysie oraz ślimakiem Archimedesa. Trzecią badaną przekładnią była przekładnia handlowa ze ślimakiem ZK1. Z porównania otrzymanych charakterystyk wynika, że sprawność i obciążalność przekładni ze ślimakiem ZK2 jest najwyższa. Wyższa nośność przekładni z wklęsłym zarysem ZK2 w stosunku do zarysu Archimedesa znajduje potwierdzenie w teorii Hertza. Uzyskane charakterystyki pokazują, że obszar zazębienia dla przekładni ze ślimakiem ZK2 jest większy w porównaniu z przekładnią Archimedesa. Potwierdzony wzrost wskaźników eksploatacyjnych przekładni ze ślimakiem o zarysie wklęsłym może przyczynić się do powszechnej ich produkcji i stosowania. Wyższa sprawność przekładni to zarazem niższe koszty jej eksploatacji.
