Opis:
This paper explores the role of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling technique in the design, regulation, and production of the gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine combustion system through literature reviews. It begins with a brief analysis of injector technologies and the effect of spray characteristics on the optimization of the combustion system. The key challenges of optimizing a homogeneous-charge GDI combustion system are the enhancement of volumetric performance and homogeneity of fuel-air mixing with reduced wetting of surface fuel and the improvement of power output. Most of the calculations focused on dynamic mesh strategy to manage moving geometry varied from case to case. The techniques of the methods varied. During the opening event of a GDI gasoline-injector for automotive applications, the findings of the literature indicate the primary fuel atomization.

Opis:
The paper addresses the issues of quantification and understanding of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) based on numerical modelling carried out under four European, EU, research projects from the 7FP within the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking, FCH JU, activities. It is a short review of the main projects’ achievements. The goal was to develop numerical analyses at a single cell and stack level. This information was integrated into a system model that was capable of predicting fuel cell phenomena and their effect on the system behaviour. Numerical results were analysed and favourably compared to experimental results obtained from the project partners. At the single SOFC level, a static model of the SOFC cell was developed to calculate output voltage and current density as functions of fuel utilisation, operational pressure and temperature. At the stack level, by improving fuel cell configuration inside the stack and optimising the operation conditions, thermal stresses were decreased and the lifetime of fuel cell systems increased. At the system level, different layouts have been evaluated at the steady-state and by dynamic simulations. Results showed that increasing the operation temperature and pressure improves the overall performance, while changes of the inlet gas compositions improve fuel cell performance.

Opis:
The specific issues that occur in the mathematical modelling of a spray-ejector condenser have been presented. The results of a thermodynamic analysis of a steam-gas turbine cycle have been obtained by computational flow mechanics code. The main aim of the spray-ejector condenser is simultaneously condensing steam and compressing CO2 from the condensation pressure to about 100 kPa. Hence, the most important innovation of this steam-gas cycle emerges as the enhanced condensation, which is based on the nano-injection of cold water and a jet-powered compression of CO2 performed in the spray-ejector condenser.

Opis:
This paper presents an agent‐based model of banking sector, which includes three kinds of heterogenous agents – households, borrowers and banks. Households provide funds to the banking sector via deposits and are changing their bank of choice stochastically. Borrowers are main source of demand for liquidity in this system, which they utilize for a risky undertaking, that may not succeed, thus defaulting on a loan. And finally banks act as an intermediary between two previous agents and manage their simple balance sheet. Agents interact with each other, establishing a time‐varying equilibrium, that is able to receive an endogenous macroeconomic shock and return to the equilibrium, which may not be in the same place or may exhibit different characteristics depending on type of the shock. The simulation introduces shocks to the three variables, namely minimal reserve ratio, probability of default and capital adequacy ratio. The work also compares drawbacks and advantages of agent‐based models to the commonly used equation‐based models, such as dynamic stochastic general equilibrium models.

We compare two bounded model checking methods for properties expressed in the existential fragment of Computation Tree Logic (Ectl). To this end we use the generic pipeline paradigm (GPP) and the train controller system (TC), the classic concurrency problems, which we formalise by means of a finite transition system. We consider several properties of the problems that can be expressed in Ectl logic, and we present the performance evaluation of the mentioned bounded model checking methods by means of the running time and the memory used.

The hydraulic performance of constructed wetlands is often compromised by hydraulic problems. Therefore, the development of an appropriate simulation model to reliably predict how various modifications of bed design and configurations might affect performance will facilitate the design of efficient systems. The aim of this research work is to determine distribution of residence time in a field-scale horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland with Palm Kernel Shell as substrate. The governing equations of flow in porous media and transport of diluted species were solved using COMSOL Multiphysics 5.3a. The result was validated using experimental data and the model result showed good agreement with a correlation coefficient of 0.99. Alternative wetland designs were assessed for the same flow conditions. The results revealed that a two cell wetland improved short-circuiting flow paths.

Opis:
W pracy przedstawiono propozycję automatycznej metody zgrubnego modelowania 3D obiektów o skomplikowanej geometrii na potrzeby szybkiej estymacji parametrów geometrycznych tych obiektów, a zwłaszcza objętości.
The paper presents an automatic, coarse method for 3D modelling of metal objects with complex geometry for a need of volume estimation. The field research were conducted on a historic wrought iron bar that covers the historic well in Nysa (city In southern Poland). The presented modelling methodology is based on a layered convex-hull method, which involves dividing of a point cloud on the segments. Within each segment, segmentation is performed based on the minimum distance between points. The resulting sets of points are then modelled as a convex solids. Thanks to the segmentation of point clouds in each segment and the integration of convex shells a detailed object model can be obtained. That allows to estimate the geometric parameters such as volume and surface area of the object. The advantage of the proposed method is that it has a small number of parameters: a thickness of segment and the parameter of maximum distance between points in the process of segmentation of clouds within the segment. Applying the convex hull algorithm causes a selective filtering point clouds, thus resulting 3D model is based on a much smaller number of vertexes than the initial number of points in the cloud. The disadvantage of the proposed algorithm is an irregular triangle mesh models, resulting in low surface regularity and larger items, and sensitivity to measurement errors (noise, ghost points).

The aim of work is the investigation of the internal stresses in PVD coated metal matrix composites (MMC). Sintered MMC substrate is composed of the matrix with the chemical composition corresponding to the high-speed steel, reinforced with the TiC type hard carbide phase. Functionally graded composition of MMC providing of high ductility characteristic of steel in the core zone as well as high hardness characteristic of cemented carbides in the surface zone. Internal stresses were determined with use of finite element method in ANSYS environment. The reason of undertaking the work is necessity of develop the research of internal stresses, occurring in the coating, as well as in the adhesion zone of coating and substrate, which makes it possible to draw valuable conclusions concerning engineering process of the advisable structure and chemical composition of coatings. The investigations were carried out on cutting tools models containing defined zones differing in chemical composition. Modelled materials were characteristic of chemical composition corresponding to the high-speed steel at the core, reinforced with the TiC type hard carbide phase with the growing fraction of these phases in the outward direction from the core to the surface, additionally coated with (Ti,Al)N or Ti(C.N) functionally graded PVD coatings. Results of determined internal stresses were compared with the results calculated using experimental X-ray sin2ψ method. It was demonstrated, that the presented model meets the initial criteria, which gives ground to the assumption about its utility for determining the stresses in coatings as well as in functionally graded sintered materials. The results of computer simulations correlate with the experimental results.

Opis:
Three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) plays important role in engines development. The mixture formation in a direct-injection piston engines poses a huge challenge in successful simulations of the engine processes. It is due to the fact that the spray as a two-phase flow complicates the computational process. Moreover, this multiphase flow is not uniform. Three main zones, depending on the distance from the nozzle exit are visible when a liquid is injected. Very dense so called “thick” in a direct vicinity of the injector hole, than “thin” as a result of pri-mary breakup downstream the injector and finally in the certain distance from the injector appears “very thin” region as a result of secondary breakup. It is important to take into account that the liquid phase in various regimes behaves differently and is under influence of different phenomena. The modelling approach needs to take in to consideration all those elements. This paper focuses on presentation of the theory and numerical models for primary and secondary breakup phenomena. The primary breakup is a process that results from a combination of three mechanisms: turbu-lence within liquid phase, implosion of cavitation’s bubbles and aerodynamic forces acting on a liquid jet. Secondary breakup regime occurs mainly due to the aerodynamic interactions between the liquid and the gaseous phase.

The paper refers to the approach used in science, specifically in building materials engineering, assuming the possibility of material modeling, including modeling of the technical characteristics of building materials of various compositions as well as modeling phenomena/processes that occur during the use of materials and structures made from them. The authors analyze the merits of the approach of modeling in the context of compliance computational models to reality, consider the significance of the selection of the proper model (type of mathematical function, number of input data) which should be based on the knowledge of modeled material or phenomenon and later adequate verification of the model. The authors also underline importance of proper interpretation of results obtained by calculation. Misrepresentation may result in a misstated model of the studied phenomenon and lead to incorrect conclusions, which puts the researcher far from the truth, that he or she should always seek for.
