Opis:
Carbon fiber reinforced polymeric (CFRP) composite materials are widely used in aerospace, automobile and biomedical industries due to their high strength to weight ratio, corrosion resistance and durability. High speed machining (HSM) of CFRP material is needed to study the impact of cutting parameters on cutting forces and chip microstructure which offer vital inputs to the machinability and deformation characteristics of the material. In this work, the orthogonal machining of CFRP was conducted by varying the cutting parameters such as cutting speed and feed rate at high cutting speed/feed rate ranges up to 346 m/min/ 0.446 mm/rev. The impact of the cutting parameters on cutting forces (principal cutting, feed and thrust forces) and chip microstructure were analyzed. A significant impact on thrust forces and chip segmentation pattern was seen at higher feed rates and low cutting speeds.

Purpose: This research aimed to prepare tetragonal zirconia polycrystals powder by coprecipitation method and study effects of addition of different amounts of nano Al2O3 (1, 2 and 4) wt.% on its microstructure and mechanical properties of (5Y-TZP) composite. Design/methodology/approach: The powder was uniaxial pressed at a pressure of 150 MPa and held for 60 s, and sintered at the 1500°C, held for two hours and then cooling down at 5°C/min to room temperature. Microhardness and fracture toughness tests were utilized to evaluate the mechanical properties of yttria tetragonal zirconia polycrystal composite. The microstructure has been observed using field emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM). Findings: The results showed an addition of nano Al2O3 has a great influence on hardness and microstructure, the increase in Vicker's microhardness of composite samples with the increase in the nano Al2O3 wt.% and microstructure were characterized with homogeneous zirconia distribution, grain growth destruction with the increasing percentage of nano Al2O3. The most important influence is the enhancing of the densification process as the porosity decreased. The highest hardness and maximum fracture toughness were recorded at 4 wt.% nano Al2O3. Research limitations/implications: Ceramic matrix composites are developed to overcome the brittleness of ZrO2 and the low toughness of alumina by formation, a large difference of elastic behavior between matrix and particles(dispersion phase )which disturbs the stress field as a dislocation comes near a particle. Practical implications: Zirconia has mechanical properties similar to those of stainless steel. Yttria-stabilized tetragonal Zirconia (Y-TZP) is growing used in dentistry due to its good mechanical properties such as hardness and fracture toughness. Thus, controlling of microstructure by adding nanoalumina plays an important role in enhancing these properties. Originality/value: Study the adding bitty percentage from nano alumina on microstructure and mechanical properties of (5Y-TZP) ceramic.

Opis:
In this research, aluminium metal matrix composites (AMMCs) have been manufactured through friction stir processing (FSP) by reinforcing nano-sized SiC particles in an Al6061-T6 alloy. The consequences of the volume percentage of reinforced SiC particles on mechanical properties and microstructural features were analyzed for the developed AMMCs. Microstructural evaluation of a cross-section of a friction stir processed (FSPed) sample has been conducted through Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM) technique. Microhardness tests were conducted athwart the cross section of FSPed specimen to obtain microhardness feature. A tensile test of FSPed samples has been conducted on a universal testing machine (UTM). Homogeneous distributions of SiC particles were found in the stir zone without any consolidation of particles. The size of the reinforcement particles was decreased slightly by increasing the volume fraction. It has been found that increasing the volume fraction of SiC particles, enhance the tensile strength and microhardness, but decreases the ductility of the aluminium. The maximum ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and microhardness were obtained as 390 MPa and 150.71 HV, respectively, at 12% volume percentage of reinforcement particles. UTS and microhardness of the FSPed Al/SiC have been improved by 38.29% and 59.48% respectively as compared to Al6061-T6. The brittle nature of the FSPed Al/SiC has increased due to a rise in the volume fraction of nanosized SiC particles, which causes a decrease in ductility.

SiC/Cu composite powders with the barrier coating of SiC-Al onto SiC powders were synthesized from Al-containing polycarbosilane precursor and Cu-nitrate hydrate. Curing at 200°C and high temperature pyrolysis at 1600°C was used to achieve the crystallization of precursor, forming the SiC-Al coating on the surface of SiC powders. A core-shell structure with the core of SiC and the shell of Cu was constructed by calcination and hydrogen-reduction of Cu nitrate hydrate. XRD and SEM analysis revealed that the β-SiC and 4H-SiC phases were formed on the surface of the initial α-SiC powders. Also, it was observed by EDX mapping that core powders of SiC were homogeneously surrounded with the fine Cu particles on their surface.

The aim of the study was to describe the structure of composites based on the AlSi7Mg2Sr0.03 alloy matrix reinforced with SiC particles added in an amount of 10% and with a mixture of SiC and GR particles added in a total amount of 20%. Studies of the composite structure, were carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Based on the results of chemical analysis in microregions, an increased content of elements such as Mg, O and Si and of the precipitates was observed at the interface. In many places in the examined sample, GR particles formed partly disintegrated conglomerates with well developed boundaries. The effect of the content of particles of the reinforcing phase on the functional properties of the composite was investigated during studies of abrasion. The lowest mass loss of 5,33mg was obtained for the AlSi7Mg2Sr0.03 alloy reinforced with 10% SiC particles.

Opis:
It is well known that the properties of a metal matrix composites depend upon the properties of the reinforcement phase, of the matrix and of the interface. A strong interface bonding without any degradation of the reinforcing phase is one of the prime objectives in the development of the metal matrix composites. Therefore, the objective of this work is to characterize the interface structure of WE43/SiC particles composite. Magnesium alloys containing yttrium and neodymium are known to have high specific strength, good creep and corrosion resistance up to 250°C. The addition of SiC ceramic particles strengthens the metal matrix composite resulting in better wear and creep resistance while maintaining good machinability. In the present study, WE43 magnesium matrix composite reinforced with SiC particulates was fabricated by stir casting. The SiC particles with 15 μm, 45 μm and 250 μm diameter were added to the WE43 alloy. The microstructure of the composite was investigated by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy and XRD analysis. YSi and Y2Si reaction products are observed at the interfaces between SiC particles and WE43 matrix in the composite stirred at 780°C. Microstructure characterization of WE43 MMC with the 45 μm, stirred at 720°C showed relative uniform reinforcement distribution. Moreover, the Zr-rich particles at particle/matrix interface were visible instead of Y-Si phases. In the case of composite with 15 μm particles the numerous agglomerates and reaction products between SiC particles and alloying elements were observed. The presence of SiC particles assisted in improving hardness and decreasing the tensile strength and plastic properties.

In the study microstructure and properties of composite multifibre copper-base wires are presented. A decision was made to produce wires with “soft” fibres (Al) and “hard” fibres (Fe). In the study the phenomenon occurring on the border of Al-Cu was also analysed. The produced Cu-Al and Cu-Fe composites presented ordered microstructure with the fibres uniformly distributed in the copper matrix. The composites underwent plastic consolidation to the degree which provided satisfactory mechanical and electrical properties. During the drawing the fibres deformed proportionally with copper matrix therefore their content in the cross section remained unchanged.

Nowadays, there is much activity all over the world in development of Cu-Nb composites for their potential use as conductors in high field magnets. This study was aimed at investigation of microstructure, mechanical and electrical properties of Cu-Nb composite wires. The investigated materials have been processed by vacuum furnace melting and casting, and then hot forging and cold drawing. Initial results of research into Cu-Nb composite material obtained using repeated iterative drawing of niobium wires compacted into copper tube, have been also presented in this article. The ultimate tensile strength versus cold deformation degree has been presented. These changes have been discussed in relation to microstructure evolution. It was assumed that repeated drawing of compacted wires is a promising method for fibrous composite production (more than 823,000 Nb fibres of nanometric diameter) characterized by high mechanical properties and electrical conductivity. Original SPD technique applied for Cu-Nb composite deformation result in initial microstructure refinement and improves effectiveness of wire production process.

Opis:
Magnesium-based MMCs are widely used in structural-based applications due to their lightweight, high hardness, corrosion and wear resistance. Also, machining is an important manufacturing process that is necessary to ensure dimensional accuracy and produce intricate shapes. In this context, the machining of Magnesium based metal matrix composites is undertaken to study the impact of the cutting parameters on the machinability behaviour. In this work, turning of pure Mg/SiCp on a Lathe is done and an in-depth assessment on the machining forces, machined surface quality, chip microstructure, and tool morphology has been carried out using TiAlN coated tooling insert. The analysis revealed that the thrust force decreased due to the thermal softening of the matrix meanwhile the feed force also followed the similar trend at higher cutting speeds because of the minimized built-up edge and cutting depth whereas principal cutting force was inconsistent at higher cutting speeds. The surface finish was better at high cutting speed - low feed combination. The chip microstructure revealed that gross fracture propagation at the free surface and variations in the shear bands have occurred at different cutting speeds. Tool studies using SEM analysis revealed wear modes like chipping and built-up edge at low cutting speeds, but with a reduced impact at intermediate cutting conditions, whereas abrasion wear was observed predominantly in the tool nose at higher cutting speeds.

The study presents investigations of an influence of various direct current densities on microstructure, residual stresses, texture, microhardness and corrosion resistance of the nickel coatings electrodeposited from modified Watt’s baths. The properties of obtained coatings were compared to the nano-crystalline composite Ni/Al2O3 coatings prepared under the same plating conditions. The similarities and differences of the obtained coatings microstructures visible on both their surfaces and cross sections and determined properties were presented. The differences in the growth character of the Ni matrix and in the microstructural properties were observed. All electrodeposited Ni and Ni/Al2O3 coatings were compact and well adhering to the steel substrates. The thickness and the microhardness of the Ni and Ni/Al2O3 deposits increased significantly with the current density in the range 2 - 6 A/dm2. Residual stresses are tensile and they reduced as the current density increased. The composite coatings revealed better protection from the corrosion of steel substrate than pure nickel in solution 1 M NaCl.

Our research on the mechanical and thermal properties of magnesium silicon nitride (MgSiN2)-silicon nitride (Si3N4) composite specimens has been reviewed in this paper. The specimen was fabricated by hot-pressing the compressed powder at a temperature between 1550°C and 1700°C for 90 min under a pressure of 75 MPa in a nitrogen atmosphere, using 1 mol% ytterbium oxide (Yb2O3) addition as a sintering aid. Mechanical and thermal properties of MgSiN2 specimen without Si3N4 addition were as follows: Vickers hardness, 18.3 GPa; flexural strength, 371 MPa; fracture toughness, 2.2 MPa m1/2; and thermal conductivity, 22.7 W m-1 K-1. In order to improve these properties, MgSiN2 composite was fabricated with the addition of 0-89 mol% Si3N4. The fracture toughness of MgSiN2 specimen could be enhanced by the addition of Si3N4, e.g., 6.6 MPa m1/2 (4 mol% Si3N4 addition) and 8.7 MPa m1/2 (49 mol% Si3N4 addition). An increase in fracture toughness of MgSiN2-Si3N4 specimen was attributed to the elongation of Si3N4 grains. Moreover, the thermal conductivity of MgSiN2-Si3N4 specimen increased to 32.7 W m-1 K-1 for 29 mol% Si3N4 addition.

Opis:
The AlMg10 aluminum alloy reinforced with SiC particles was subjected to friction stir processing (FSP). The composite was made by mechanical mixing and gravity casting. The mass fraction of SiC particles in the composite was about 10%. Evaluation of the effects of FSP treatment was performed by means of light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, EDS and hardness measurement. It was found that the inhomogeneous distribution of SiC particles and their agglomeration, which were observable in the cast composite, were completely eliminated after FSP modification. The treatment was also accompanied by homogenisation of the material in the mixing zone as well as fragmentation of both the matrix grain of the composite and SiC particles. In the case of SiC particles, a change in their shape was also observed. In the as-cast composite, particles with dimensions from 30 to 60 μm and a sharp-edged polyhedral shape prevailed, while in the material subjected to friction treatment, particles with dimensions from 20 to 40 μm and a more equiangular shape prevailed. Pores and other material discontinuities occurring frequently in the as-cast composite were completely eliminated after friction modification. The recorded changes in the microstructure of the material were accompanied by an increase in the hardness of the composite by nearly 35%. The conducted investigations have shown that FSP modification of the AlMg10/SiC composite made by the casting method leads to favorable microstructural changes in the surface layer and may be an alternative solution to other methods and technologies used in surface engineering.

Opis:
The use of carbon fiber composites (CFC) for different applications is widespread. Carbon-based materials show, however, significant oxidative degradation in air. Modern materials are subjected to aggressive, corrosive environment. This type of environment may strongly reduce their mechanical properties. For the protection of CFC, it was necessary to apply coatings to the composite surface. In the presented paper, a chromium/chromium nitride (Cr/Cr2N) multilayer structure has been selected as the inner part. The outer part of the coating was a hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H), gradually implanted by Cr nanocrystals. The application of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicated that the proposed deposition method allowed the formation of a Cr/Cr2N multilayer of Λ = 150 nm, topped with a-C:H+ Cr23C6 composite of a varied carbides density. The micro-hardness of the deposited coatings was up to 14 GPa (at a load of 2 and 5 mN). The microstructure of the deposited coatings was described in detail by means of TEM in the authors’ recently published paper [1]. This paper is a continuation thereof, aimed at describing microstructure changes after a localized corrosion process. In order to study localized corrosion in coatings, particularly in metallic (Cr) interlayers, the potential measurements and voltammetry experiments were performed in a Ringer solution. The open-circuit potential reaches stable values after a sufficient time period. The results indicated that the presence of a-C:H+Cr23C6, the outer part of the coating, speeds up the localized corrosion process in Cr interlayers in the inner part of a coating.

Opis:
An optimum route to fabricate the Cu-based SiC composites with homogeneous microstructure was investigated. Three methods for developing the densified composites with sound interface between Cu and SiC were compared on the basis of the resulting microstructures. Starting with three powder mixtures of elemental Cu and SiC, elemental Cu and PCS coated SiC or PCS and Cunitrate coated SiC was used to obtain Cu-based SiC composites. SEM analysis revealed that the composite fabricated by spark plasma sintering using elemental SiC and Cu powder mixture showed inhomogeneous microstructure. Conversely, dense microstructure with sound interface was observed in the sintered composites using powder mixture of pre-coated PCS and Cu-nitrate onto SiC. The relationship between powder processing and microstructure was discussed based on the role of coating layer for the wettability.
