Opis:
The monograph entitled ROUND-HEADED BORERS (COLEOPTERA: CERAMBYCIDAE) OF DOOARS, WEST BENGAL – A COMPENDIUM by Sumana Saha and Dinendra Raychaudhuri submitted for review has 141 numbered pages which contain both the body of the text, illustrations and photographs and the list of references, index of names being used in the monograph and information about the authors. The family Cerambycidae is one of the most numerous beetle families in the world. They are usually large or very large insects (this family includes the largest beetles of the world) and often richly coloured, especially tropical species. Because of their size, rich palette of colours and relative ease in their collection, these beetles enjoy a high standing among collectors and entomologists. Although this group is fairly well recognised in the world, a lot of new species of the long-horn beetles is being described every year. This primarily applies to tropical regions. However, when analysing individual countries, the situation with identification of long-horn beetles can be very different. Therefore, each new study, especially concerning tropical regions, is extremely valuable when it comes to species identification of not only long-horn beetles but also most beetle families. The monograph being submitted for review is a compendium o f knowledge about long-horn beetles that are to be found in the Dooars region, West Bengal. The examined area seems to be an extremely interesting object of research as it is situated on the border of two zoogeographic regions, Palaearctic and Oriental Regions. The authors divided the monograph into 14 chapters, presenting successively a general characteristics of the long-horn beetles, the area being examined, the terminology being used in the monograph, a taxonomic part together with the list of long-horn beetle species living within the examined area, and a key to their identification. Additionally, the authors characterised 7 species of long-horn beetles in terms of their bionomics. The final part of the monograph contains a short discussion and the list of references which includes 135 items. Within the area examined, the authors have shown 91 species of long-horn beetles, in relation to140 one being reported from West Bengal. These species have been shown from several nature reserves and Gorumara National Park. Despite using different methods of catching and a long time of in which the research took place, this result is not satisfactory. There is an impression that long-horn beetles were collected “incidentally”, during the study being targeted on other groups of invertebrates. All the protected objects being examined have been well characterised and presented on numerous photographs. An important and extremely useful element of the monograph is the key for species identification. Certainly, this element of the monograph will be used by numerous entomologists dealing with long-horn beetles of the Oriental Region. An interesting fact is a pictogram key for the Cerambycidae subfamilies and tribes being attached, as well as presentation of respective species on photographs together with biological information, habitat and geographical distribution in the world. The monograph being discussed is undoubtedly the needed publication which will facilitate the work of many entomologists specialising in the family Cerambycidae of the Oriental Region. At the same time, it is an invitation to further exploration of the wild parts of India which have been left not so much.

Opis:
The longhorn beetles or round headed borers are in their greatest abundance in the tropics. These borers are included within 13 subfamilies that are delineated by their morphological characters, the most primitive being the Prioninae while the rather advanced are Cerambycinae and Lamiinae. Hanks (1999) in his review on the works done during the past 90 years did discuss the informations available only for 81 species. He (op. cit) indicated that the average publication rate is less than one species per year. This paucity of information is reflective of the rarity with which researchers record sufficient detail of the cerambycids. Again, on the other hand, the forests of Dooars in particular are not only rich in animal life forms but also for the wealth of trees. These in turn make an economic return for which silviculture is a regular practice. The quality of such trees (logs) are often assessed by the buyers before bidding. It is needless to mention that the deterioration in the quality is mainly because of the woodborers that usually burrow in the tissues of the woody plants in conditions ranging from alive to moribund to dead and decomposing. However, some species feed within the stems of living herbaceous plants. All such habitat deteriorations other than being natural events are often accentuated because of the plantation practices. Adaptation to such highly variable host plant quality has certainly resulted in a diverse spectrum of cerambycids with tremendous variation in their behaviour and ecology. A sustained management plan therefore demands a thorough and intensive study on these wood borers attacking the trees/timbers/shade trees of tea plantations. The study should involve biodiversity assessment followed by biology. Knowledge on the diversity spectrum along with their associated hosts would essentially form the basic. The work in future days may be extended to biology. Therefore, study on the taxonomic diversity of the cerambycid of Dooars appears imperative in order to develop a sustained management plan against the quality deterioration of the trees/timbers.

Owady uszkadzają liście wierzby na wiele sposobów. Fizyczny ubytek tkanek powodują m.in. chrząszcze. Dane pochodzą z trzech plantacji i jednego stanowiska naturalnego, z lat 2011–2018.
There is a big number of beetle species feeding on willow leaves. The aim of the study was to describe the damage to leaf blade caused by imagines of: Crepidodera aurata, Chrysomela populi, Chrysomela vigintipunctata, Lochmaea capreae, Pachybrachis sp. (Chrysomelidae); Phyllopertha horticola i Anomala dubia (Scarabaeidae), Lepyrus palustris, Polydrusus spp. and Phyllobius spp. (Curculionidae). Data were collected at three plantations (Salix viminalis and its hybrids) and in one natural site (different species of narrow-leaved willows), in the years 2011–2018. For each insect taxon: date of feeding, age class of suffered leaves, shape and depth of the damage, and its placement on the leaf blade were determined. All the studied beetles were feeding on young leaves in different stages of development. Sometimes they used leaves folded by Earias clorana larvae. Damage occurred during whole growing period of the willow. The most common kind of injuries were irregular holes, varying in size, sharp and location. C. aurata also bit out minute “windows” (surface feeding) in the leaf blades. Holes made by Pachybrachis spp. always occur-red in a line, between main vein and leaf edge. Damage of willow caused by Polydrusus and Phyllobius are described in literature as small semicircular notches on leaf edges (margin feeding), but in the case of gradation in Sa-dłowice in 2014, the apical parts of the young leaves were completely eaten. The observation showed, that on production willow plantations, injuries un-described so far in guidebooks for farmers, could occur.

Opis:
Tree stumps provide habitat for insect assemblages, which are influenced by various factors. Among these factors, physical and chemical changes of the stumps, fungi developing in the dead wood and stump size are most often reported. However there is limited information about the abundance of insects in stumps that are located on mountains where there are different microclimatic conditions. The studies pointed at the determination whether the location of Picea abies stumps in mountains at different altitudes above sea level and on mountainsides with different sun exposure has an impact on the frequency of insects colonising them. The study was carried out in the Eastern Sudety Mountains situated in south-western Poland. The stumps were in clearcuts located at the altitudes 600–700 m and 900–1000 m above sea level and on southern and northern mountainsides. The insects were collected from 0.05 m2 of bark from each stump and identified to the family, order or species level. The numbers of insects in the stumps were modelled with the use of the Poisson distribution or the negative binomial distribution and the generalised linear models. Picea abies stumps were colonised by insects from 16 families in 3 orders (Coleoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera) in which the Coleoptera was most frequently represented by the families Cerambycidae, Curculionidae (with the sub-family Scolytinae). In the stumps located at the elevation of 900–1000 m there were 28% more insects than in the stumps at 600–700 m. The stumps located on mountainsides with northern exposure were colonised more abundantly by Cerambycidae. Numbers of Curculionidae in the stumps were affected by altitude. Most Curculionidae were found in the stumps located at the elevation 900–1000 m above sea level. The interaction of altitude and mountainside exposure showed more insects in the stumps at higher altitude, regardless of the mountainside exposure. The results showed that the total number of insects in the stumps was influenced by their location in mountains.

In the experiments the lifetime, survival and feeding preferences of Sitona lineatus L. on the various broad bean cultivars were investigated. The measures of the injured disks were performed by means of automatic image analysis. This method led to reduction of time required for the measures. Based on these experiments it can be suggested that Hangdown Zielony was the most preferable and suitable cultivar for the S. lineatus adults from all tested broad bean cultivars. The largest injured disk surface, the longest life and the highest survival of Sitona weevils were recorded on this variety.

Population parameters of Sitophilus granarius (L.) were measured under various conditions of temperaturę and relative humidity. The range of five examined temperatures (15 to 35°C) had a remarkably stronger effect on all examined parameters than applied range of two relative humidities (75%; 85 or 95% ). The highest intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) and the highest finite rate of increase (lambda) were recorded when temperatures of 25 and 30°C were used. The generation time (T) ranged from approximately 10 weeks at 30°C and 75 or 85% RH to approximately 22 weeks when 15°C was used. At 35°C there were no survivors of any immature stages of S. granarius regardless of relative humidity, so population parameters could not be counted. A brief narrative is presented on the potential of these environmental variables for control applications.
Określono parametry populacyjne wołka zbożowego Sitophilus granarius hodowanego w kontrolowanych warunkach temperatury i wilgotności względnej powietrza. Najwyższe wartości wrodzonego tempa wzrostu populacji (rm) i tempa zwiększenia liczebności populacji (lambda) rejestrowano w testach, gdzie zastosowano temperaturę 25 i 30°C.

Thirteen new species of the family Cupedidae (Coleoptera: Archostemata) from Las Hoyas (Cuenca province) and El Montsec (Lleida province) fossil sites from the Barremian (Lower Cretaceous) of Spain are described. Ten of them belong to subfamily Ommatinae: Tetraphalerus ponomarenkoi, Tetraphalerus penalveri, Cionocoleus longicapitis, Brochocoleus indibili, Zygadenia viridis, Zygadenia oculata, Zygadenia martinclosas, Zygadenia longicoxa, and Zygadenia siniestri. Three of them are assigned to subfamily Cupedinae: Priacma sanzii, Anaglyphites zherikhini, and Anaglyphites pluricavus. Placement of genus Cionocoleus among subfamily Ommatinae is proposed. These new species extend the record of genera Zygadenia, Cionocoleus, Brochocoleus, Priacma, and Anaglyphites to the western part of Barremian European deposits. Nowadays the family Cupedidae is considered to be a relic group, restricted to few genera and species on Asia, Africa, Australia, and America, with limited geographical distribution, while during the Mesozoic the cupedids were distributed all over Laurasia. The Mesozoic cupedid−bearing localities are mostly interpreted as warm temperate to subtropical environments.

Opis:
Ground beetle communities found in the suburbs of wells of three oil fields of Khoiniki district (Republic of Belarus) were studied in the research carried out. These deposits are in the forest area. This research drew out that there is a growth in the number of species composition and abundance of ground beetles (Carabidae) in the exclusion zone due to the anthropogenic transformation of forest ecosystems. At the same time there is a reduction in representation in ground beetle communities of forest species in favor of meadow and field species to their total disappearance. The reduction occurs together with the growth of species abundance and number.
