Many contemporary philosophers, especially the “post-modern ones,” claim that analytical philosophy has committed self-destruction by undermining the position of cognitive realism and questioning its main pillars: theory of objective reference of expressions and correspondential theory of truth. One of such philosophers is Rorty, an indefatigable critic of the conception of “right representations,” a concept that – according to him – is “an empty compliment which we pay to helpful beliefs while realising our intentions.” In order to support his nihilistic position, Rorty many times refers to Quine. In my paper I seek to answer the question whether Rorty’s and the views of other post-modern philosophers can be supported by Quine’s philosophical conceptions. Analysing some selected trends of his philosophy, in particular the thesis about indeterminacy of reference (ontological relativity), I seek to prove that – contrary to Rorty’s claim – Quine did not devalue the idea of objective reference. I also prove that the semantic concept of truth as relativised to the model of language plays in Quine’s epistemology an equally essential role to the role of the immanent concept of truth as “disquotational.” The former is closer to the correspondential conception of truth. The conclusions which Rorty draws from the conception of Quine are rash, and sometimes they are an outcome of biased interpretation.

Brakuje metody opisu programów GIS, która pozwoliłaby poznać nie tylko ich funkcje i sposób komunikacji z użytkownikiem, ale również ich głęboką strukturę. Celem analizy semantycznej jest odkrycie tej struktury i zbadanie jej związku ze strukturą poznawczą dyscypliny macierzystej - geografii. Podstawową jednostką głębokiej struktury jest metafora.
GIS software descriptions are widespread but often useless, because they are unable to reveal the inner logic of the system. Like other complex software, GIS may be analysed in terms of three layers: 1) functionality, 2) user interface (shallow layer) and 3) cognitive structures (deep layer). Vendor information sources, factsheets and application studies cover, for the most part, functionality and shallow layer, neglecting deep structure. However, misunderstanding and mismatch between user cognitive structure and software structure severely impairs GIS usefulness, especially when big projects are concerned. The rescue may come from cognitive science and semiology rather than from software engineering. Semantic analysis should be used to 1) achieve good design for new systems, 2) describe exsisting software and make a foundation for professional critical activity, similar to literary or architectural one. Semantic analysis focuses on the mapping between domain-specific cognitive structure and corresponding deep software structure. The letter must be consistent (logically congruent), compact (devoid of unnecessary terms) and abstract (make use of general terms). Metaphors constitute basic components of deep software layer, conveying meaning and analogy from the real world or domain. To properly analyse system at hand, metaphors must be extracted first. The next step is to review each metaphor along five dimensions: 1) analogue (reference to external object), 2) properties, 3) behaviour, 4) composition (if consisting of simpler parts) and 5) relations to other metaphors within the system.

Understanding of ambiguity in 5-year-old children in the context of the development of theory of mind Research studies on ambiguity are related to different areas – communication, language and processing of perceptual stimuli. Results obtained from most research show that children under the age of six can neither react  dequately to ambiguous linguistic or visual stimuli nor understand ambiguous statements. A hypothesis about the relation between understanding ambiguity and the development of the knowledge about the mind was proposed after an analysis of existing experimental data. Four different tasks testing the understanding of ambiguity had been used and it was found out that their level of difficulty varied. There was no connection between the performance in solving tasks of different types. The relation between the understanding of ambiguity and the development of the knowledge of mind was indicated. Children performed better in false beliefs test than in tasks testing their understanding of ambiguity. There was a correlation between performance in particular tasks testing the understanding of false beliefs and tasks testing the understanding of ambiguity.

Development of consumer socialisation in the light of children’s theories of mindThe paper presents the benefits that can be derived from studying consumer socialisation in the light of the development of child’s mental competences. In the beginning, the author presents how consumer socialization, the process by which young people acquire skills, knowledge and attitudes relevant to their functioning as consumers in the market place, is conceived in four different theories of: James McNeal (1992, 2007), Patti Valkenburg, Joanne Cantor (2001), Fiony Cram, Sik Hung Ng (1999), Deborah Roedder John (1999). The analysis of presented theoretical approaches show that they all emphasize the role of socio-cognitive development as developmental mechanisms crucial for the child’s improved consumer functioning, but do not explain which developmental competences are the most crucial. While the theories draw heavily on Piagetan developmental theory, the author argues that the more recent approach focusing on the development of the child’s theories of mind may prove more fruitful. The developmental changes in two areas: children’s ability to appreciate and cope with advertising and children’s influence in purchase decision can be better explained by growing mental competences of the child. The review of research on these topics generates the hypothesis that first- as well second-order mental states understanding is important for generating and understanding persuasive communication. Future studies, based on this hypothesis, can be valuable for understanding the developmental mechanisms of consumer socialisation as well as a theory of mind development in middle childhood.

The organization of human cognitive styles can be described as a kind of functional system or as an holon. In this framework it is possible to propose a new theoretical base for classifying the primary cognitive styles. The fundamental theoretical thesis is that for all styles there is one common mechanism of forming and scanning the perceptual and memory field induced by the situation, and by the differences in the manner of carrying out the processes of field scanning /codes interfering depend on the range of conceptual equivalency and cognitive control of behavior. In the functional describing of the basic set of cognitive styles we must take into account three elements of the chain: neurobiological modules -> organization of cognitive holon -> behavioral manifestation of styles.

Cognitive, social and affective perspective taking: interrelations in preschool childrenThe study on the interrelations of perspective taking ability in different domains is presented. The theoretical background of the study is the theory of Perspectival Understanding of Mind (PUM; Perner, 2000). According to this theory, the core ability that develops in the 5th year of life and that underlies many tasks that children start to accomplish in that time, is an ability to understand and coordinate different perspectives. 120 children aged 3;6–5;6 participated in the study. The measures used to assess the perspective taking ability were as follows: Flexible Item Selection Task (FIST; Jacques and Zelazo, 2001) in the cognitive domain, Test Wiedzy o Emocjach (TWE; The Test of Emotion Knowledge; Stępień, 2007) in the affective domain and the classical false belief tests in the social domain. The results obtained suggest that after the fourth birthday children start to accomplish different tasks that demand perspective taking ability. However, the interrelations of perspective taking in different domains are differentiated, and they change in the preschool period.

There are two definitions of the term Virtual Reality (VR) according to the VR pioneer, Jaron Lanier. The first definition refers to the visual programming technology (especially in computer games) which uses custom designed tools (like helmets, gloves and glasses) combined with special effects in order to achieve an illusion of physical space. The second meaning of the term VR encompasses all the elements of the „alternative” reality of cyberspace in which people communicate by means of different electronic devices. As such, VR allows those who participate in these interactions to manipulate and multiply their digital selves to such an extent as to loose their actual sense of self. VR technologies are used in a variety of professional capacities such as education, medicine, engineering, architecture and so on. Some negative consequences occur primarily with the overuse of VR for entertainment purposes (such as computer games) and include personality and behavioral changes in younger, adolescent users. There are also larger cultural influences to consider. The mind of a modern user of new technologies cannot keep up with the pace of societal changes, promoting behaviors which hinder communication, mutual understanding and cooperation. VR continues to affect the emotional, behavioral and sensory aspects of the psyche. The invasive persuasion of media and advertising influences people’s habits, opinions and ethics. One of the most disturbing cultural changes is the confusion of public and private spheres, Facebook friends for family and the substitution of cyberspace for home life.

W artykule przedstawiono badanie dotyczące związków w zakresie przyjmowania perspektywy w różnych obszarach funkcjonowania psychicznego. Podstawę teoretyczną badania oraz ramę pojęciową wykorzystaną do interpretacji wyników stanowi koncepcja Perspektywicznego Rozumienia Umysłu (Perspectival Understanding of Mind – PUM; Perner, 2000), zgodnie z którą istotą rozwijającej się w 5. roku życia kompetencji, łączącej wiele zadań opanowywanych przez dzieci w tym właśnie czasie, jest zdolność rozumienia i koordynowania różnych perspektyw. Zbadano 120 dzieci w wieku 3;6–5;6 lat. Do badania przyjmowania perspektywy w obszarze poznawczym zastosowano Test Elastycznego Wyboru (Flexible Item Selection Task – FIST; Jacques, Zelazo, 2001), w obszarze afektywnym Test Wiedzy o Emocjach (TWE; Stępień, 2007), a w obszarze społecznym klasyczne testy fałszywych przekonań. Uzyskane wyniki wskazują, że rzeczywiście po skończeniu 4. roku życia dzieci zaczynają radzić sobie z rozwiązywaniem zadań wymagających przyjmowania perspektywy, jednakże wzajemne zależności między przyjmowaniem perspektywy w obszarze poznawczym, społecznym i afektywnym są zróżnicowane, a ponadto zmieniają się w okresie przedszkolnym.

Emotions are a phenomenon relatively rarely described and often treated as irrational or uncontrollable. The present article is an attempt of placing a construct of Emotional Intelligence in the structure of a personality of a man. The Cognitive-Experiential Self-Theory of Epstein, that arranges different spheres of functioning of a man, refering them to different systems of processing information, was used as a point of reference. Emotional intelligence, understood as a set of abilities needed to process pieces of emotional information, as a multidimensional construct of different abilities fits in the action of experiential and rational systems - both marked out by Epstein. Each ability as a part of emotional intelligence belongseither to the firstor to the second system. One can come to a conclusion that like the majority of psychological processes of a man can be attributed to their level of unconsciousness, preconscious or conscious, so the emotional functioning on different levels of consciousness. The most basic, primary abilities of emotional intelligence belong to the experimental system of a direct regulation, whereas those developed later, evolving on the base of the first abilities, are used on the level of the rational system of the indirect regulation.

The aim of the study was to confi rm the mediation effects of the task-specifi c self-effi cacy on the relationship between the general self-effi cacy and intention and planning considering treatment. The study comprised 265 subjects, of which 165 were post-mastectomy women and 100 patients hospitalized due to acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The variables were assessed using the Generalized Self-Effi cacy Scale (GSES) and tools developed to examine the context of treatment. The data were analyzed using the bootstrapping procedure. The results confi rmed the indirect effects of task-specifi c self-effi cacy, both in women making a decision to undergo breast reconstruction, and in patients after ACS formulating intention to change risk behaviours. As smoking was considered to be a moderator in the post-ACS group, the obtained associations were observed only among the patients declaring quitting smoking. In view of the fact that taskspecifi c self-effi cacy is susceptible to context (e.g. it may depend on quitting smoking), it is useful to assess it in order to increase treatment effectiveness.
