Opis:
This paper describes the fi ndings of a pilot research on the application of object classifi ers and body parts in classifi er predications referring to one designatum, i.e. the dog in the picture story Frog, Where Are You?. The research showed that the frequency of the classifi ers in informants’ texts varied. One classifi er type prevailed when describing the majority of situations. Moreover, for each classifi er type used in a given situation, there was a clear predominance of one of the possible shapes of hand, while the remaining ones were similar to it. From among body part classifi ers, the least specifi c shapes of hand prevailed, which rendered the look of dog head to the smallest extent. These observations prove a high level of grammaticalisation of object classifi ers and poorly specific body part classifiers.

Opis:
The present paper investigates punctual vs. habitual readings of Romanian proper temporal names of the type luni ‘Monday’ vs. lunea ‘Monday.def’. These readings are associated with the absence vs. presence of the definite article (Franco and Lorusso 2022). The paper makes two major claims. Firstly, following Longobardi (1994, 2005), and Franco and Lorusso (2020), the paper claims that with bare, i.e., definiteless, proper time names, N-to-D movement triggers individual-like reference, which, in turn, explains why the event is interpreted as punctual. Secondly, the paper shows that the structure of proper temporal names is complex, in the sense that it contains the classifier zi ‘day’, thus paralleling the structure of complex descriptive proper names of the type ‘the planet Venus’ (see van Riemsdijk 1998, Cornilescu 2007 a.o.). This classifier is shown to be overt when there is no N-raising, and silent when N raises to D in the structure of proper temporal names.

Opis:
Polish-Bulgarian-Russian, Bulgarian-Polish-Russian or Russian-Bulgarian-Polish dictionary? The trilingual dictionary (M. Duszkin, V. Koseska, J. Satoła and A. Tzoneva) is being elaborated based on a working Polish-Bulgarian-Russian electronic parallel corpus authored by Maksim Duszkin, Violetta Koseska-Toszewa and Joanna Satoła-Staśkowiak, and works by A. Tzoneva. It is the first corpus comparing languages belonging to three different Slavic language groups: western, southern and eastern. Works on the dictionary are based on Gramatyka konfrontatywna bułgarsko-polska (Bulgarian-Polish confrontative grammar ) and the proposed there semantic-oriented interlanguage. Two types of classifiers have been introduced into the dictionary: classic and semantic. The trilingual dictionary will present a consistent and homogeneous set of facts of grammar and semantics. The Authors point out that in a traditional dictionary it is not clear for example whether aspect should be understood as imperfective / perfective form of a verb or as its meaning. Therefore in the dictionary forms and meaning are separated in a regular way. Imperfective verb form has two meanings: state and configuration of states and events culminating in state. Also perfective verb form has two meanings: event and configuration of states and events culminating in event. These meanings are described by the semantic classifiers, respectively, state and event, state1 and event1. The way of describing language units, mentioned in the article, gives a possibility to present language material (Polish, Bulgarian, Russian) in any required order, hence the article’s title.

Opis:
Wavelet-neural systems (WNS) presented in this work, inheriting the properties of neural networks, belong to the class of universal approximators of unknown functions, F, describing the relationship between input X ∈ RN and output Y ∈ RM of a process or object. Classifier structures described in this work fulfil the role of approximators of functions, which are able to assign the input signal to a particular class with a given accuracy. A performance comparison of elaborated classifier structures with preliminary time-frequency analysis in the wavelet layer has been made for different types of the neural part. A feed forward multi-layer perceptron and a neural net with radial basic functions are analysed theoretically and practically. Results included in this paper present a comparison of the learning and verification stages of a classifier, tested on the basis of non-stationary signals of heart rate variability. Despite the fact that a WNS with the Morlet basic function gives the best results for the learning phase of WNS, the other tested wavelets used in the preliminary layer, Db4, allow us to obtain the best system performance during its verification.

The paper proposes summarized attribution-based post-hoc explanations for the detection and identification of bias in data. A global explanation is proposed, and a step-by-step framework on how to detect and test bias is introduced. Since removing unwanted bias is often a complicated and tremendous task, it is automatically inserted, instead. Then, the bias is evaluated with the proposed counterfactual approach. The obtained results are validated on a sample skin lesion dataset. Using the proposed method, a number of possible bias-causing artifacts are successfully identified and confirmed in dermoscopy images. In particular, it is confirmed that black frames have a strong influence on Convolutional Neural Network’s prediction: 22% of them changed the prediction from benign to malignant.

Opis:
The concept of utilizing association rules for classification has emerged in recent years. This approach has often proved to be more efficient and accurate than traditional techniques. In this paper we extend the existing associative classifier building algorithms and apply them to the problem of image classification. We describe a set of photographs with features calculated on the basis of their color and texture characteristics and experiment with different types of rules which use the information about the existence of a particular feature in an image, its occurrence count and spatial proximity to classify the images accurately. We suggest using association rules more closely tied to the nature of the image data and compare the results with those of classification with simpler rules, taking into consideration only the existence of a particular feature on an image.

The paper presents a new system for ECG (ElectroCardioGraphy) signal recognition using different neural classifiers and a binary decision tree to provide one more processing stage to give the final recognition result. As the base classifiers, the three classical neural models, i.e., the MLP (Multi Layer Perceptron), modified TSK (Takagi–Sugeno–Kang) and the SVM (Support Vector Machine), will be applied. The coefficients in ECG signal decomposition using Hermite basis functions and the peak-to-peak periods of the ECG signals will be used as features for the classifiers. Numerical experiments will be performed for the recognition of different types of arrhythmia in the ECG signals taken from the MIT-BIH (Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Boston’s Beth Israel Hospital) Arrhythmia Database. The results will be compared with individual base classifiers’ performances and with other integration methods to show the high quality of the proposed solution.

Opis:
Artificial immune systems (AIS) have become popular among researchers and have been applied to a variety of tasks. Developing supervised learning algorithms based on metaphors from the immune system is still an area in which there is much to explore. In this paper a novel supervised immune algorithm based on clonal selection framework is proposed. It evolves a population of linear classifiers used to construct a set of classification rules. Aggregating strategies, such as bagging and boosting, are shown to work well with the proposed algorithm as the base classifier.

Opis:
Detection of concept changes in incremental learning from data streams and classifier adaptation is studied in this paper. It is often assumed that all processed learning examples are always labeled, i.e. the class label is available for each example. As it may be difficult to satisfy this assumption in practice, in particular in case of data streams, we introduce an approach that detects concept drift in unlabeled data and retrains the classifier using a limited number of additionally labeled examples. The usefulness of this partly supervised approach is evaluated in the experimental study with the Enron data. This real life data set concerns classification of user's emails to multiple folders. Firstly, we show that the Enron data are characterized by frequent sudden changes of concepts. We also demonstrate that our approach can precisely detect these changes. Results of the next comparative study demonstrate that our approach leads to the classification accuracy comparable to two fully supervised methods: the periodic retraining of the classifier based on windowing and the trigger approach with the DDM supervised drift detection. However, our approach reduces the number of examples to be labeled. Furthermore, it requires less updates of retraining classifiers than windowing.

Opis:
Radial basis function neural networks (RBF NNs) are one of the most useful tools in the classification of the sonar targets. Despite many abilities of RBF NNs, low accuracy in classification, entrapment in local minima, and slow convergence rate are disadvantages of these networks. In order to overcome these issues, the sine-cosine algorithm (SCA) has been used to train RBF NNs in this work. To evaluate the designed classifier, two benchmark underwater sonar classification problems were used. Also, an experimental underwater target classification was developed to practically evaluate the merits of the RBF-based classifier in dealing with high-dimensional real world problems. In order to have a comprehensive evaluation, the classifier is compared with the gradient descent (GD), gravitational search algorithm (GSA), genetic algorithm (GA), and Kalman filter (KF) algorithms in terms of entrapment in local minima, the accuracy of the classification, and the convergence rate. The results show that the proposed classifier provides a better performance than other compared classifiers as it classifies the sonar datasets 2.72% better than the best benchmark classifier, on average.
