Opis:
The study aims to present variability in the population of individual size classes of Polish cities in 1950-2018, its determinants and consequences for the formation of the settlement system. The application of quartiles as the basic statistical measure allowed identifying which parts of particular size classes of cities had the greatest impact (progressively or regressively) on changes in the settlement system. In this respect, strong dynamics of the upper quartile of Polish cities, lasting until the end of the 1970s, becomes apparent. In the 1980s, the dynamics of the upper quartile of large cities showed a shift during development waves in comparison to the culmination of these waves for medium-sized cities. However, since the end of the 1980s, there has been an increasing role of the lower quartile in determining the direction of changes in the size structure of cities, especially in medium and small cities.

The oldest city in the world appeared in the Neolithic era. The rapid development of agriculture contributed to the increase in population and population density. There were the first townships, which were later called "protocities." By today's criteria can say that it was a little crowded, but in those days Catal Hüyük, Hatsilar or Jericho, numbering several thousand people, were considered large populations. In the Neolithic civilizations laid the foundation. First civilizations appeared in the IV millennium BC. e. in the Middle East. Why the Middle East has become a source of development? Unequivocal answer to this question does not exist, but this fact contributed to such prerequisites: climatic conditions; geographical location, abundant raw materials for construction, easy access to other raw materials (for example to ores of various metals). Along with Mesopotamia and Egypt in the Middle East have become the centers of civilization as India and China. The first major civilization emerged in river valleys. Their development is closely linked with the introduction of irrigation in agriculture. Irrigation system repeatedly increased productivity, making it possible to provide more food population. Among the characteristics of ancient civilizations should be noted: urban development and the emergence of states, social stratification and hierarchization societies, the use of writing, the development of scientific principles, division and time measurement.

The article presents theoretical aspects of urban competitiveness, with special emphasis on factors determining competitive position of cities. it discusses implications of the definition assumed by the european Commission in this respect, according to which competitive city is not simply an aggregated performance of its venues but also conditions created for growth and maintenance of high standard of living of its citizens. Based on the EC definition, a model of i. Begg is presented. the model shows relations between various groups of determinants of urban competitiveness and is further used to evaluate competitive position of Polish cities, elaborated with PwC, Cushman&Wakefield and UrbanAudit data. Based on this analysis strengths and weaknesses of Polish cities are pointed out, also with regards to their competitive strategies.

Opis:
This paper analyzes the condition of open-air markets in Poland, with particular emphasis on Kraków. The authors note that there are a declining number of open-air markets. The size of the markets is also shrinking and there are a decreasing number of stands. Similarly, survey respondents demonstrate less interest in open-ai rmarkets as a shopping destination and significantly increased interest in shopping centers (malls), discount stores, supermarkets, and hypermarkets. However, open-air markets have many supporters: in particular, older people appreciate open-air markets, and not only because of the availability of fresh products at a relatively low price. They also appreciate such markets as meeting places. Open-air markets in CEE cities have always played an important commercial role and been witness to the history of these cities. For this reason and also because of the important function they play as unique public spaces, they should be protected and should receive special treatment from the local authorities.

Opis:
The topic of “urban shrinkage” is receiving increasing attention in the political urban agendas of many countries. In the global market, cities, which suffer from consequences of urban decline, confront with new challenges in finding and applying creative solutions to strengthen their economic development and competitiveness. Shrinkage processes are especially widespread in the cities which are smaller and less attractive to live and work. The same tendencies are seen at national border regions. The article explains the general causes and consequences of urban shrinkage process emphasizing problems that have a direct impact on the improvement of urban economic competitiveness. The urban economic competitiveness evaluation methodology under the context of shrinkage is developed and its practical applicability is verified on the example of border cities. Various strategies of solving problems of shrinkage are overlooked. Recommendations to improve the economic development and competitiveness of Lithuanian-Polish cross border cities Alytus and Ełk in the context of urban shrinkage are introduced.

The ranking of cities according to their individual intellectual (innovative, organizational, creative, central, etc.) potential is actual and important for geographic studies in the epoch of post--industrialization. The results of such ranking can be applied in various aspects and directions of regional policy. The very idea of such ranking seems to have been first formulated in France in the early 1960s. The research concerned was aimed at solving the problem of hyper-centralization in that country through forming ‘metropoles d’equilibre’ in the periphery, to counterbalance Paris. The task was to find the French cities which were ready to fulfill this role. Later, we have used this idea to rank Siberian cities as to their administrative potential. The important innovation in methodology was introduction of a principally new index, crucial just for Siberia (although maybe less important in Europe). This index is the distance from the nearest comparable or obviously more significant city

Objectives: The aim of the study was to make an international comparison of blood levels of cadmium (B-Cd), lead (BPb) and mercury (B-Hg) of women in seven European, and three non-European cities, and to identify determinants. Materials and Methods: About 50 women (age: 46–62) from each city were recruited (totally 480) in 2006–2009. Interview and questionnaire data were obtained. Blood samples were analysed in one laboratory to avoid interlaboratory variation. Results: Between the European cities, the B-Pb and B-Cd results vary little (range of geometric means: 13.5–27.0 μg/l and 0.25–0.65 μg/l, respectively); the variation of B-Hg was larger (0.40–1.38 μg/l). Between the non-European cities the results for B-Pb, B-Cd and B-Hg were 19.2–68.0, 0.39–0.99 and 1.01–2.73 μg/l, respectively. Smoking was a statistically signifi cant determinant for B-Cd, while fi sh and shellfi sh intakes contributed to B-Hg and B-Pb, amalgam fi llings also contributed to B-Hg. Conclusions: The present results confi rm the previous results from children; the exposure to lead and cadmium varies only little between different European cities suggesting that other factors than the living area are more important. The study also confi rms the previous fi ndings of higher cadmium and lead levels in some non-European cities. The geographical variation for mercury is signifi cant.

This paper deals with the institutional and factual readiness of cities and villages in the Czech Republic to use Integrated Territorial Investments (ITI). On the basis of a questionnaire survey carried out in May 2014 among representatives of 69 municipalities around the core cities of Brno, Jihlava, Olomouc and Hradec Králové - Pardubice as well as a comparison of several model agglomerations, it identifies the main problems and proposes solutions to them. The main theme of this paper is to evaluate the formation of partnerships of municipalities and the process of creating integrated strategies for metropolitan areas. The paper also deals with the relationships and functional links between cities and villages and their hinterland, the common development issues and the existing structures of cooperation and communication. In the conclusion possible recommendations are given to improve the ITI functioning in the Czech Republic on the basis of both, the assessment of the situation in the Republic itself and the reflection on developments in other EU countries.

The paper shows the possibility of a new approach to the problems of the city and its development. Firstly, it presents a brief outline of the attitudes forming the current main stream of theoretical and methodological stand-points towards the city: theory of a new international division of labour, theory of global cities, urban theory, information theory, dualisation, crisis and urban renewal, and finally, the latest one: theory of creative cities. Against this background, the article presents an outline of a new approach, called “rebirth” or “revival” of the city, i.e. the phenomenon of reviving – in terms of demography and economy – a whole agglomeration, which had previously been steadily losing population and economic base, and, on the other hand – a clear revival of central cities. The new approach is based on the belief that many cities have the potential useful for the economic success in today’s world, and that the chances for prosperity are not reserved only for modern cities in developed economies.

Regeneration of degraded areas takes an important position in the Polish development policy. It is included in the legal framework resulting from the Regeneration Act and the Physical Planning and Spatial Development Act. It constitutes a significant element in the programming of socio-economic and spatial development. This is largely thanks to the EU funds which are the basis for financing the projects and programmes for regeneration. In the country’s development policy a complex approach to regeneration is promoted, manifested by the concentration of activities in the most neglected areas, integrated activities carried out with a broad social participation which will be continuously monitored and evaluated on this basis. The Polish model of regeneration, formulated in such a way, gives hope for the elimination of critical situations in cities and communes.

The article includes partial results of research on the movement Cittàslow, which has no background in detailed theses and assumptions – the method applied is of phenomenological nature. The purpose of this part of the research was to identify the potential socio-economic implications of membership of Cittàslow network. The research conducted with the use of the non-reactive methods such as the analysis of source materials. Methods implemented during the empirical research are mainly qualitative ones: participant observation and in-depth interviewing with mayors, local leaders and citizens. The research gives the answer to the question: what can benefit the city by joining the Cittàslow network?

Opis:
Research background: Modern cities often struggle with the problem of selecting an optimal model of development, which is adjusted to their needs and resources. A kind of response to this was the founding of the Cittaslow network, bringing together cities developing according to the slow city model. The Polish National Cittaslow Network was established in April 2007. The founders of the network were four cities from the Warmińsko-Mazurskie Province (Biskupiec, Bisztynek, Lidzbark Warmiński and Reszel). The aim of the Polish National Cittaslow Network is to promote and spread the idea of good life by implementing in the cities appropriate solutions in the field of environmental policy, infrastructure, quality of urban life, hospitality and social cohesion. Currently, 28 cities belong to the Polish National Cittaslow Network. These cities are joined by a common idea and common goals adopted to improve the quality of the residents' life. However, each city has a different history, tradition, natural values, and also has a different socio-economic potential. Purpose of the article: The aim of the study was to assess the differentiation of the socio-economic potential of cities belonging to the Polish National Cittaslow Network. Methods: The research covered all member cities of the network. The synthetic index was used to assess the socio-economic potential of cities. The grouping of cities was carried out using the hierarchical Ward method. Findings & Value added: Differences in the socio-economic potential of the cities which belong to the Polish National Cittaslow Network are moderate. This is confirmed by the values of the synthetic index of this potential in each of the cities as well as coefficient value of its variation. Differences between the member cities were also verified by the results of grouping. As many as 7 groups were distinguished, including 2 composed of single entities. The conclusions arising from this research are as follows. Firstly, the slow city development model should be individually adapted to the capabilities of each city or group of cities similar to each other in terms of the socio-economic potential level. Secondly, the recommendations proposed in this study can make a useful contribution to discussions on the possible implementation of the slow city model in Poland, and its adaptation by individual cities. Furthermore, the research outcome can serve as a set of recommendations for Cittaslow member cities in other countries.

In the era of migration, cities play an important role in integrating immigrants and promoting social cohesion. Sometimes they create and implement integration policies different from these at a national level. The state-run civic integration programs question the thesis of the growing role of cities as these programs have resulted in centralizing integration policies and reducing their role. In recent years, large European cities have been implementing a cultural diversity management model referred to as “intercultural integration”. They have also adopted mainstream policies targeted at the entire population. In terms of immigrant integration policy Polish large cities have recently been following a pattern set by their Western European counterparts. This results from the availability of European funds and trends towards cultural diversity rather than challenges.

The main aim of this paper was aimed at determining the degree to which the smart city concept is used for the purpose of managing cities in Poland. The research team intendezzzzd to approach this relatively new concept in a creative way. It needs to be emphasised that the research project did not aim at documenting examples and/or case studies of smart cities, but rather at identifying the actions of local authorities which could be considered consistent with the smart city concept and aiming at: reducing the costs of the city’s functioning, economising of resources, improving the quality of life and making the city more comfortable for its citizens in particular through applying modern technologies.

The aim of the article is to present the material scope and methodological assumptions of the research on the image of cities undertaken since the late 1970s. The author points out that the image of the city is a very broad term in which various research directions are included. The subject matter had been addressed in the works of sociologists, geographers and art historians since the 1920s. The so-called cultural breakthrough in historical sciences in the 1970s has contributed to the increasing interest in the problem of the representation of cities. The essence of the new approach has become the interest in the principles of creating an image, the ways of its construction and its functions. The priority in undertaking new methodological challenges in the research on the perception of cities and its representations should be attributed to researchers of literature and art historians. Historians started to be more seriously interested in the area in the 1980s. According to the author, the studies developing until the beginning of the 21st century were characterized by a large methodological diversity. Over the last ten years, the focus of researchers has been the issue of creating an image of their own city in various research contexts: city representation, city branding, symbolic communication and communal staging.

Although past studies have found that processes of urban shrinkage may act as a catalyst for socio-economic segregation, these relationships remain underexplored outside the context of large cities and capitals. Moreover, cities at lower-tiers of the urban hierarchy in post-socialist Europe have been doubly excluded from the critical discourse on the socio-spatial effects of shrinkage. Hence, this article examines how shrinkage affects socio-economic segregation in the medium-sized post-socialist city of Schwerin, employing segregation indices to assess levels of spatial unevenness and location quotients to map intra-urban patterns of vulnerable population groups over time. Results indicate processes of shrinkage may exacerbate socio-economic segregation in medium-sized cities and that the spatial heterogeneity of shrinkage intersects with uneven distributions of affluence and poverty. However, suggesting that legacies of state socialism shape contemporary socio-spatial change, segregation in Schwerin is strongly conditioned by its socialist-era housing estates, which are generally characterised by the highest rates of population decline, vacancy, and vulnerable groups.

Research background: Many demographic, social, spatial, economic and infrastructural problems have accumulated in small cities in Poland. It seems that the situation of the smallest cities located farther away from large cities and metropolises is particularly difficult. A chance for their development may arise from cooperation within a network of cities which associates cities similar in size, paradigm and vision of development, such as the "Cittaslow - International network of cities where living is good". Purpose of the article: The aim of the article is to identify main cooperation areas for slow cities in Poland. An analysis was made of the cooperation between 28 cities that are members of the Polish National Cittaslow Network. Methods: The research applied a critical review of the literature and a diagnostic survey method. The survey was carried out with a standardised questionnaire. It was addressed to mayors of all member cities of the Polish National Cittaslow Network. The study was made in 2018. Findings & Value added: The cooperation of cities belonging to the Cittaslow network in Poland is becoming more and more complex and concerns mainly the development of tourism and urban promotion. The shared logo and promotion of the urban network, organization of cultural events, exchange of experience, implementation of a supralocal revitalization program for several 'slow cities' from Warmia and Mazury, are examples of active cooperation. This proves that the competition between cities can be transformed into effective coopetition of cities. The idea of 'slow', which is fundamental to the development of the Cittaslow networked cities, creates an opportunity to design an individual development model for small cities that could apply to cities in Poland and elsewhere in the world.

Opis:
For many decades most researchers, planners and local authorities have been focusing almost exclusively on urban growth and its socio-economic and spatial consequences. However, in the current debate concerning the future of cities and regions in Europe the process of their shrinkage starts to attract more attention. In the conditions of a declining population, urban governance is an important challenge for local authorities, being usually much more difficult than during the periods of population growth. The experience of cities affected by shrinkage shows that there is no simple method of counteracting negative consequences of this process. Regeneration strategies vary a lot, depending mostly on the way the problem is perceived by both central and local governments. The strategies can either choose an adaptive approach (the acceptance of shrinkage and adjustment to it), or attempt to renew growth (shrinkage is treated as just a temporary phenomenon). Quite often the problem is ignored and no action is taken at all. In the paper the authors discuss the conditions and consequences of different approaches towards the process of shrinkage and present examples of regeneration strategies (together with their assessment). They conclude with recommendations for future urban policies.

This article concerns the process of population concentration in large urban centres in China. The authors conclude that this process is reflected in the increase in the number of cities of a million or more, and the increase in their share of China’s total population, as well as in the country’s total urban population; the process is here termed ‘macropolization’. We analyse and assess the process of macropolization and examine changes in the size structures of these cities (one million or more), and the accompanying transformation in the spatial differentiation of urban population concentrations in China. In addition, the effect that macropolization has on the level of urbanization of individual provinces is shown, as is its significance in the overall share of urban population. The macropolization process from 1950 to 2015 has been assessed. The data was collected from Chinese statistical offices, United Nations reports and the available literature on the subject.

The author analyses the manifestations of cities’ growing role for ensuring the national/international as well as environmental and human security. Cities of today increasingly participate in international relations – they internalize, implement and enforce international law, sometimes independently of their States’ international legal obligations, for example when they pledge to implement human rights conventions or environmental law obligations that their own States did not pledge to fulfill. In this way they contribute to international peace and security. On the basis of those manifestations, the author attempts to explain the possible position of cities on the international plane and according to international law – whether they should be accorded greater autonomy or international legal personality. The author also indicates that the role of cities in the area of different aspects of security is growing.

Following in the footsteps of Tim Ingold, the author asks whether ‘dwelling perspective’ (in contrast to ‘building perspective’) and radical rejection of the Western hylomorphic model may be useful to understand two contemporary, and yet contradictory urban trends: self-organising (informal) cities and spectacle cities. Can the former be recognised as utopias in the context of the latter losing their urban values (dystopia)?

One of the most important problems of the present-day development of many cities, both in theoretical-research and practical decision-making terms, is the process of their shrinking. Fighting adverse effects of the shrinkage seems to be one of the greatest challenges of development policy for the nearest future in many cities of Europe. That is why it is necessary to formulate and implement new strategies of renewal of the shrinking cities at various levels of development management. The present article offers an analysis of the national and regional strategies in eastern Germany and the local one in the French postmining town of Saint-Etienne. One can conclude on their basis that the key tasks of the urban and regional authorities should be co-operation with the residents, proper management of the process, an individual approach to each case, and first and foremost, convincing the local community that shrinking can also mean new growth possibilities.

Opis:
Celem artykułu jest analiza i ocena doświadczeń wybranych miast subregionalnych w programowaniu rewitalizacji. Na wstępie określono politykę strategiczną państwa względem ośrodków subregionalnych. Wskazano na wytyczne wnikające z Koncepcji Przestrzennego Zagospodarowania Kraju, Krajowej Polityki Miejskiej i Strategii na rzecz Odpowiedzialnego Rozwoju. Następnie szczegółowo zbadano dotychczasowe działania podejmowane w 4 miastach, które w wyniku reformy administracyjnej w 1999 r. utraciły status miasta wojewódzkiego, tj. w Ciechanowie, Legnicy, Pile i Przemyślu. Scharakteryzowano obecnie obowiązujące dokumenty, a w szczególności opisano specyfikę obszarów objętych rewitalizacją. W dalszej kolejności przedstawione zostały wiodące kierunki przekształceń tych obszarów, wynikające z przyjętej polityki rewitalizacyjnej. Pozwoliło to na sformułowanie pewnych uogólnień na temat specyfiki procesu odnowy obszarów zdegradowanych w ośrodkach subregionalnych w Polsce.
The aim of the article is to analyze and evaluate the experience of selected subregional cities in revitalization programming. At the beginning, the strategic policy of the state towards subregional centers was defined. The guidelines from the National Spatial Development Concept, the National Urban Policy and the Strategy for Responsible Development were pointed out. Then, examine in detail the activities carried out so far in 4 cities, which as a result of the administrative reform in 1999 lost the status of the provincial city, i.e. in Ciechanów, Legnica, Piła and Przemyśl. Current documents 8 have been characterized, in particular, the specificity of areas covered by revitalization has been described. Next, the leading directions of transformations of these areas were presented, resulting from the adopted revitalization policy. This allowed for the formulation of certain generalizations about the specificity of the process of renewal of degraded areas in subregional centers in Poland.

Waste management is currently one of the most important problems of the functioning of densely populated areas, important in the case of cities. The main problem of waste management is to break a simple correlation between economic growth and the increase in the amount of waste. Forecasting of amount of municipal waste generation on the basis of previously applied methods in the situation of large changes in socio-economic environment turns out to be inaccurate approach. In the literature a wide variety of geographically diverse factors are proposed for this purpose. This paper presents the results of modeling and forecasting of municipal waste generation changes in cities.  In this study, the impact of the various socio-economic factors for the municipal waste production was tested.

Nowadays, the issue of sustainable mobility is very resonant in the professional public. Main topic for discussion is a transport as a one of the biggest polluters in the world. Today's transport brings a number of benefits to society, but often it has a high price. This price is paid by wasted human lives and serious environmental damage. Therefore there is no wonder that a number of cities, municipalities and regions regard transport as the key to their development, but at the same time as a threat to the health of the population, their safety and quality of a whole life. The combination of public and shared transport is necessary for clean and smart mobility. Shared economy is a concept of social change in the 21st century. This paper is focused on above mentioned issues. It describes levels of the smart city concept and principles and forms of shared economy in transport and shared mobility.

Following stormy debate regarding the role of globalisation and global space in development, geographical analyses are now tending to return to matters of place, and its role in people’s lives. Given that Latin America’s cities were founded by Europeans, one might expect them to be characterised by processes and phenomena similar to European experiences and general processes of globalisation today. In fact, however, specific socio-cultural features arising from both the colonial and pre-colonial past of this region, political factors (especially that reflecting the presence of powerful elites descended from the Spanish) and economic features (interest in the region’s resources being displayed by foreign investors) have all conspired to ensure that Latin America is characterised by a development trajectory distinct from those in other regions, as well as by contemporary structures in urbanised areas being shaped by diverse political and economic forces, mechanisms ever-present in the region’s culture and politic

Social innovation relating for cities mean original and bottom-up solutions, focusing on better meeting the individual and the urban community needs. According to examples presented in the article, innovative activities of urban residents can be considered not only in the context of “creativity” as economic advantage, but rather in terms of responsiveness to the faulty policy of urban management. It is necessary according to the author to redefine the concept of social innovation, so as to take account of the actions that are illegal and constitute a form of protest against the inability of municipal authorities

An Intelligent Transportation System is a modern solution which aims to improve the functioning of transport by, among other things: reducing congestion, shortening travel time, or improving road safety. This solution is used in many cities around the world, bringing economic effects and improving the comfort of life of the inhabitants. In Poland, as a result of the European Union’s promotion of the de- velopment of intelligent transport systems through their co-financing, many cities have introduced such solutions. In the article, against the background of theoretical considerations, the impact of intelligent transport systems on road safety in the years 2014–2018 was analysed on the example of selected cities.

Ontology Driven Architecture
Opis:
This paper presents a model of an integration bus used in the design of Smart Cities system architectures. The model of such a bus becomes necessary when designing high-level architectures, within which the silo processes of the organization should be seen from the perspective of its ontology. For such a bus to be used by any city, a generic solution was proposed which can be implemented as a whole or in part depending on the requirements posed by those cities with respect to the construction of such buses. The work is divided into four main parts. The first part presents a model of high-level architectural design processes, using ontologies and a data integration bus, which constitutes the generalized experiences of the authors drawn from the design processes of Smart Cities systems. The second part contains a description of the environment in which Smart Cities systems are developed, illustrated with two guidelines and the implementation processes of these guidelines. In the third part, two components of that environment are identified: the data integration bus and the ontologies of city processes. This is done to demonstrate how Smart Cities systems are designed and to show the processes of the permeation of data and the ontologies of city processes in the creation of a high-level architecture. The fourth section contains a description of how the proposed model is applied in the construction of a common integration bus for data and ontologies. The paper summary presents recommendations concerning the applicability of the proposed model.
W artykule przedstawiono propozycję modelu szyny integracyjnej wykorzystywanego w projektowaniu architektur systemów Smart Cities. Część czwarta zawiera opis zastosowania proponowanego modelu do budowy wspólnej szyny integracyjnej danych i ontologii. Artykuł podsumowują rekomendacje dotyczące możliwości zastosowania proponowanego modelu.

Currently, Türkiye is a country with the largest number of refugees in the world. Over 3.7 million of them come from Syria. At the beginning of the migration crisis which affected European Union member states, Türkiye as a transit destination provided refugees with a place at Temporary Accommodation Centers (TACs). After signing the agreement with the European Union (on March, 21 2016) and with the increasing number of refugees in Türkiye, it became impossible to place all of them in refugee camps. Syrians began to migrate not only to border cities and towns, but also to Istanbul and other Turkish metropolises. This article aims to show the impact of refugees on the situation of Istanbul and other Turkish cities. The analysis is intended to answer the following questions: how did refugees change the structure of Turkish cities? How did the migrations of the Syrian community affect the border cities of Türkiye and the metropolises in the western and central part of the country? Which socio-economic problems did the increase in the number of refugees generate in Türkiye? What kind of social problems arose in Turkish cities with the arrival of Syrian refugees?

Digital city security is one of the most important elements that should accompany technological implementation in local government. The purpose of the article is to present the key areas of smart city development and the need to implement high-quality cyber security that slowly for sustainable growth of urban spaces. The paper uses research areas including monographic, observational and individual case method. The author emphasizes that only the symbiosis of technological growth and cyber security can permanently change the urban fabric. Lack of adequate forms of digital security for the ever-newer technological investments, can hinder the development of cities and discourage people from investing in smart cities. Cyber security in a smart city is therefore a key point connecting public expectations with rapid development.

Urbanization today is one of the most important trends in planetary development. 2020 has marked the greatest period of uncertainty and economic volatility our generation has ever faced. The COVID-19 outbreak has made a significant difference to our way of life. While scientists estimate that by 2050, 68% of the world’s population will live in cities, there is a growing need to design pandemic-resistant cities. Smart cities are one of the essential needs for reducing this as well as other pandemics. This study reviews recent approaches and presents potential solutions that can be exploited by health-centric smart cities to relieve impacts of any pandemic.

Co-operative society businesses are one of the major contributions to the Sri Lankan economy. The multipurpose co-operative societies provide several services to people. The study was based on the managers of the retail stores of multipurpose co-operative societies in the northern central province of Sri Lanka, as they have suffered losses for several years. The study assessed the impact of employee job attitudes on organizational performance with selected managers as a study sample. A survey questionnaire was used as an instrument to collect data. The study was conducted to measure and identify variables. The data collected were fitted to the created model. Model validation was assessed using the validity test of Cronbach’s alpha. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics were used in the analysis. A correlation coefficient and a regression analysis were used to analyze the dependencies between employee job attitudes and organizational performance to evaluate the hypotheses. All the hypotheses developed in the study were positively confirmed. The results of the study confirmed that managers have negative attitudes towards their employment, which has an impact on organizational performance. The study recommends that co-operative societies should have mechanisms to assess employee job attitudes and improve the quality of work-life to enhance organizational performance.

Therefore, the main focus of it was put on the analysis of the possible models of development of spaces in the context of changing socio-economic environment of cities and evolution of their structure. This issue is discussed also in light of the changing definition of the contemporary public space, which no longer resembles the examples known from a few decades ago. In conclusion, it is argued that the value of contemporary public spaces is associated with their influence on site attractiveness – both in physical, social and economic meanings.
