Opis:
Excess body weight is considered to be a chronic disease, which is one of the greatest life and health risks. Obesity has a negative impact on the body, and the people affected by it are exposed to the development of serious diseases including diabetes, coronary artery disease, hypertension and brain strokes, gall bladder disease, certain types of cancer as well as to numerous psychosocial problems. Givining up obesity treatment might lead even to death. Obese people need multidirectional interdisciplinary therapeutic team in which a nurse is actively involved. The paper presents an individual case study and a care plan for a 46-year-old patient with obesity and numerous co-morbidities.
W pracy przedstawiono opis indywidualnego przypadku i plan opieki wobec 46- letniego pacjenta z otyłością i wieloma chorobami współistniejącymi.

Opis:
Objectives: Data on the prevalence of chronic diseases and their relationship with sickness absence in the Italian public employees are rather scarce. Therefore, in the first place, we assessed the distribution of chronic diseases in the employees of the University of Ferrara. As a next step, we investigated the possible associations between each chronic disease and cumulative days of all-cause sickness absence, and finally we investigated the odds ratio of each single chronic disease on sickness absence. Material and Methods: A total of 514 employees, 269 sick-listed and 245 not sick-listed in 2012, were studied. Demographical/clinical characteristics and chronic diseases were obtained from all study participants during medical surveillance procedures. Sickness absence days and job seniority data were obtained from the administrative office. Results: Gastrointestinal and psychiatric diseases were the most reported in the sick-listed sample (p = 0.01 and p = 0.02, respectively, compared to the not sick-listed). In the interquantile regression analysis, the sickness absence days were as - sociated with psychiatric diseases (β = 65.1, 95% CI: 13.2-117.1, p = 0.01) and with the presence of 2 or more chronic diseases (β = 23.3, 95% CI: 4.5-42, p = 0.02). Furthermore, the logistic regression analysis showed that the odds of sickness absence were increased 2 fold by psychiatric diseases (OR = 2.2, 95% CI: 1.01-4.93, p = 0.04), and gastrointestinal diseases (OR = 1.9, 95% CI:1.07-3.42, p = 0.02) and, to a lesser extent, by high body mass index (OR = 1.05, 95% CI: 1-1.11, p = 0.03). Conversely, female gender reduced by half the odds of sickness absence (OR = 0.5, 95% CI: 0.3-0.8, p = 0.04). Conclusions: This study highlights the relevant association between chronic diseases and sickness absence in Italian public employees. Our findings indicate the importance of considering the health status when designing preventive interventions aimed at decreasing sickness absences in this population.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the problem of pupils’ perception of difficulties in participating in classes and extracurricular activities. The research was carried out in Poland as part of the international HBSC (Health Behavior in School-aged Children) study in the school year 2013/2014. Data refer to 3,448 schoolkids who completed an extended questionnaire about functioning in a school environment. The research covered five school years – from the fifth grade of primary school to the third grade of lower secondary school. The average age of the respondents was 14.2 years (SD = 1.7). The aim of this work was to compare the pupils’ perception of difficulties in access to school and extracurricular activities depending on the health conditions and selected socio-demographic factors. The obtained results indicate that only one in five pupils declared complete lack of difficulty. The results of the average values of the scale of “restrictions on participation in extracurricular activities and after-school programmes” showed a significant relationship with the sex and wealth of the family, to the detriment of boys and poor families. Pupils with diseases and health problems more often declared that they had difficult access to school and extracurricular activities. Analyses taking into account the state of health of the respondents and the socio-economic status of the family and place of residence indicated that these differences are not offset by children from rich families living in medium-sized cities. An important task of the school in order to equalise educational opportunities is to diagnose the needs related to the students’ health conditions but also taking into account environmental conditions.

Rising number of chronic diseases worldwide requires improvement of patients’ care system, especially in disease prevention and health promotion. Therefore it is justified to broaden the range of services in community pharmacies in Poland. The aim of this study was to evaluate pharmacists’ opinion about health screenings for chronic diseases in community pharmacies. Research was based on original, anonymous questionnaire administered between July 2016 and March 2017 to pharmacists (n=175; 77.7% women and 22.3% men) practicing in a community pharmacy in Wielkopolska (n=106; 77.4% women and 22.6% men) and Zachodniopomorskie Region (n=69; 78.3% women and 21.7% men). The effect of age and gender on pharmacists’ opinions was evaluated. Among pharmacists who responded, 93.7% agreed that patients don’t have health check-ups when they don’t experience bothersome symptoms of a disease. Almost three fourth of respondents considered implementation of health screening services in pharmacy as valuable as it can have positive influence on development of pharmaceutical care. Younger pharmacists (p=0.019) who collaborate with physicians (p=0.009) were most certain about it. 80,0% of pharmacist, in particular younger one, would offer their patients the screening services (p=0.006). 79,4% pharmacists confirmed that this new service should be reimbursed by National Health Fund. Development of new health screening services in community pharmacies may help to prevent or lower the risk of complications associated with common chronic diseases.

Today, the more and more common chronic diseases among women are classified as critical life events, and increase the need to seek social support. Their frequency and such changes that have occurred in society as increased need for online support, show that the topic requires further empirical research. The article presents the unique features of chronic diseases and the role of holistic social support. The most important information on the opportunities and risks of online support for chronically ill women has been collected. Due to its importance and universality, there is a need to develop this issue and apply more scientific research to it.

Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) represent a small population of blood cells (5-40 cells/mm3), with an ability to differentiate into endothelial cells that form the lining of the blood vessels and contribute to postnatal angiogenesis. Abundant evidence shows that recruitment of EPCs from the bone marrow, the monocyte/macrophage lineage and the organs facilitate the endothelial regeneration and repair. Changes in the number of EPCs were observed in both, chronic kidney and cardiovascular diseases. Thus, these cells were tested for usage in diagnosis and therapy. In this paper, we review the current knowledge on the EPC biology and contribution of these cells to the kidney and cardiovascular diseases.

Chronic diseases are main reason of death in most of the countries around the world. Because of their nature and etiology the risk of chronic disease increases with age. Ageing of populations caused by low birth rate and increase of life expectancy have also impact on the increase of the prevalence of chronic diseases. Despite of mortality, chronic diseases are a reason of disability and low quality of life. Chronic diseases have also economic effects, influence current economy and future growth. Fortunately, many of the risk factors for chronic disease are known and can be prevented. All of mentioned aspects of chronic diseases were reason for development of the strategy of “healthy ageing” meaning, “helping people to live long and productive lives and enjoy a good quality of life”.

BackgroundThe chronic kidney disease, blood hypertension and diabetes are recognized as civilization diseases that affect more and more people. The probability of encountering a patient suffering from these diseases is increasing. As such, it appears crucial to better understand the specific dental needs of such groups of patients. The aim of the work was to assess the oral hygiene status and the needs of patients suffering from the end-stage chronic kidney disease, arterial hypertension or/and diabetes.Material and MethodsTwo hundred and twenty eight patients were included in the research. One hundred and eighty patients were hemodialized in Diaverum dialysis stations and 48 patients were from the Conservative Dentistry with Endodontics Clinic of the Academic Centre of Dentistry in Bytom, Silesian Medical University in Katowice, and from the Dentistry Division of the Arnika Clinic in Zabrze, and were not not diagnosed with any of the diseases mentioned. The research scheme was divided into 3 parts, consisting of an analysis of the general health socio-economic status, a survey and an assessment of oral health.ResultsThe patients who were not suffering from any of the discussed diseases were more aware of how to properly perform hygienic procedures. Most of the patients from both the control and examined groups were not using any rinsing solutions. A higher percentage of patients in the control group was using dental floss, changing their toothbrush every 3 months and brushing their teeth for ≥2 min. The Aproximal Plaque Index and the Oral Hygiene Index-Simplified values in the control group were significantly lower in comparison to the examined group.ConclusionsThe socio-economic status of hemodialized patients was low, which in most cases was a result of the difficulties in starting a job. Due to the lower standards of life, the neglect of oral hygiene maintenance and its consequences could be observed.
