Opis:
Two methods of determining the chlorophyll a concentration in the sea have been formulated on the basis of artificially induced fluorescence measured with the aid of submersible fluorometers. The method of statistical correlation is founded on the empirical relationship between fluorescence and chlorophyll concentration. The theoretical model of fluorescence described in Part 1 of this paper (see Ostrowska et al. 2000, this volume) provides the basis of the other method, the physical method. This describes the dependence of the specific fluorescence of phytoplankton on the chlorophyll concentration, a diversity of photophysiological properties of phytoplankton and the optical characteristics of the fluorometer. In order to assess their practicability, the methods were subjected to empirical verification. This showed that the physical method yielded chlorophyll concentrations of far greater accuracy. The respective error factors of the estimated chlorophyll concentration were x = 2.07 for the correlation method and x = 1.5 for the physical method. This means that the statistical logarithmic error varies from −52 to +107% in the case of the former method but only from −33 to +51% in the case of the latter. Thus, modifying the methodology has much improved the accuracy of chlorophyll determinations.

Opis:
The aim of this work was to find statistical relationships between the concentrations of accessory pigments in natural populations of marine phytoplankton and the absolute levels and spectral distributions of underwater irradiance. To this end, empirical data sets from some 600 stations in different parts of the seas and oceans were analysed. These data were obtained from the authors’ own research and from the Internet’s bio-optical data base. They included the vertical distributions of the concentrations of various pigments (identified chromatographically) and the vertical and spectral distributions of the underwater irradiance measured in situ or determined indirectly from bio-optical models. The analysis covered a total of some 4000 points illustrating the dependence of pigment concentration on underwater irradiance characteristics, corresponding to different depths in the sea. The analysis showed that the factor governing the occurrence of photoprotecting carotenoids (PPC) is short-wave radiation λ < 480 nm. A mathematical relationship was established between the relative PPC concentration (relative with respect to the chlorophyll a concentration) and the magnitude of the absorbed radiative energy per unit mass of chlorophyll a from the spectral interval λ < 480 nm, averaged in the water layers Δz = 60 m (or less near the surface) to account for vertical mixing. This absorbed short-wave radiation (λ < 480 nm) was given the name of Potentially Destructive Radiation (PDR∗(z)). Analysis of the relationships between the concentrations of particular photosynthetic pigments (PSP), i.e. chlorophyll b, chlorophyll c, photosynthetic carotenoids (PSC), and the underwater irradiance characteristics indicated that these concentrations were only slightly dependent on the absolute level of irradiance E0(λ), but that they depended strongly on the relative spectral distribution of this irradiance f(λ) = E0(λ)/PAR0. The relevant approximate statistical relationships between the relative concentrations of particular PSP and the function of spectral fitting Fj , averaged in the layer Δz, were derived. Certain statistical relationships between the pigment composition of the phtyoplankton and the irradiance field characteristics are due to the photo- and chromatic acclimation of natural populations of marine phytoplankton. These relationships can be applied in models of the coefficients of light absorption by phytoplankton.

The effect of foliar feeding with four biostimulants with active substances (Ecklonia maxima algae extract, titanium, humic substances, plant hormones: auxin and cytokinin) on the chlorophyll content and plant height of three Solanum tuberosum cultivars was investigated. A field experiment was carried out in 2015–2017 in eastern Poland in three growing seasons using the split-plot method. The cultivated varieties significantly differentiated the chlorophyll content (SPAD index) and plant height. The research showed the influence of varieties and many years of research on the height of potato plants. The biostimulants increased the value of the SPAD coefficient and the height of the potato plants.

Criteria used for evaluating drought tolerance of wheat cultivars demanding more time and efforts are usually not efficient and conclusive. Present study was conducted to evaluate ABA sensitivity as a criterion for evaluating drought tolerance of wheat cultivars at an early stage. Ten cultivars of wheat were subjected to drought at 3-leaf stage to select the most sensitive and two tolerant cultivars using mortality rate. Tatara was found the most susceptible whereas GA-2002 and Chakwal-50 were the cultivars with maximum drought tolerance. These cultivars were used to study sensitivity to applied absicic acid (based on germination index and relative growth inhibition rate) and physiological responses (leaf water content, chlorophyll stability index, coefficient of relative inhibition and proline accumulation) under drought stress. Highest ABAsensitivity was recorded in GA-2002 and Chakwal-50 whereas Tatara manifested minimum sensitivity. ABAsensitivity corresponded to physiological indices of drought tolerance. Results show that ABA-sensitivity is an efficient criterion that can be used to evaluate drought tolerance of wheat cultivars at early stage.

Opis:
Using laboratory cultures of algae and natural phytoplankton populations from Nhatrang Bay (South China Sea), the relationship between the chlorophyll fluorescence F0, the chlorophyll a concentration Ca and light absorption capacities of algae cells was studied. It is shown that the ratio F0/Ca depends mainly on the species composition of the algae population; hence, the concentration Ca can be measured with the fluorescence method with acceptable accuracy only when the species composition of algae populations varies over a rather narrow range. The fluorescence F0 can, however, be a good index of the total absorption capacities of different phytoplankton species, because the intensity of F0 depends on the sum total of light absorbed by all photosynthetic pigments in a plant cell. Thus, the fluorescence F0 measures not only the concentration of chlorophyll a, but that of all photosynthetic pigment concentrations.

In this study, 12 taxa from the Chlorophyta, Phaeophyta and Rhodophyta were collected from different depths at Gemlik-Karacaali and Erdek-Ormanlı. A total of 175 specimens from these divisions were used to determine Total Protein (TP), Total Soluble Carbohydrate (TSCH) and Chlorophyll a (Chl a), Chlorophyll b (Chl b), Chlorophyll c (Chl c), total carotenoid (Car) contents and Chl b/Chl a, Chl c/Chl a, Car/Chl a, Car/Chl b, Car/Chl c ratios. TP, TSCH and pigment contents varied significantly with respect to the algal taxa, stations and depth distribution. In addition, individual differences were important in all of the measured parameters. The maximum TP contents (0.94%–31.03%) were determined in some of the Rhodophyta. In some green seaweeds belonging to the genus Ulva L., the TP content was determined between 2.9%–28.1%. Lower TP contents were determined in Cystoseira barbata (Good) C. Agardh (1.1%–4.3%). In contrast to TP contents, TSCH values were very low; maximum TSCH were determined in Ulva species, as were protein contents. In conclusion, the variations in TP, TSCH and pigment in 12 taxa of macroalgae were analysed according to station, depth, and environment.

The effect of different methodological steps on the analysis of chlorophyll a (chl a) was tested with algae cultures and Baltic Sea water. Selected experiments were tested with ANOVAs for significant differences between treatments. The results of the experiments led to the following recommendations: the sample volume should be low so that filtration takes no longer than 10 min. Extracts rather than filters should be stored if storage of the samples at −20◦C is required. However, quickfreezing in liquid nitrogen is recommended. The extraction efficiency was much better in 96% ethanol than in 90% acetone – extraction in the latter solvent requires the filters to be homogenised. The extraction time has no significant influence within a range of 3 to 24 hours if the recommended 96% ethanol is used.

The agricultural sector is currently witnessing the use of Internet of Things (IoT) to drive significant innovations across key interests, particularly irrigation. A sprinkler designed with an Arduino controller was developed in this study. The device is among the fastest growing agricultural irrigation systems. The plant studied is Brassica Chinensis, because this vegetable is one of the most commonly consumed vegetables by Indonesian people. However, emphasis is also placed on plant quality as an important consideration, not only on the device’s operational performance. The purpose of this research was to compare the plant quality, including the dissolved solids, chlorophyll, carotenoid, and vitamin C using manual and Arduino-based sprinkler. As consequence, three treatment methods were employed, termed: the use of manual sprinkle, e.g. P0, and Arduino-based IoT sprinkler, described as P1 and P2. Under these conditions, the chlorophyll quality was comparable to the results obtained using the manual application. P1 is a situation where the sprinkler is manually set by the farmer via the app. Meanwhile, P2 uses a sprinkler which is automatically regulated by the system. Under these conditions, the chlorophyll quality generated with the IoT sprinkler was comparable to the results obtained using the manual application.

Opis:
This research examines the eutrophication process mainly by considering the chlorophyll-a concentration. A simple linear model was used to determine the correlation between Chlorophyll-a and dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP). The research was carried out on river mouths in the north coast of Central Java. The results of the linear model show that the relationship between chlorophyll-a and DIP follows the logarithmic model with the log [Chloa] = 1.52 + 1.60 log [DIP], R2 = 0.55. The model suggests that the high concentration of chlorophyll-a is related to dissolved inorganic phosphate concentrations. On the basis of the sufficient of conclusive evidence for these variables, the study sites with high stresses from several anthropogenic sources had higher chlorophyll-a than the sites that are relatively far from river mouths and lands.

Opis:
Pelargonium graveolens belongs to Geraniaceae family. It is an aromatic and hairy herbaceous shrub that can reach up to 1.2 m height and a spread of 1 m. Its leaves are deeply incised, soft to the touch and strongly scented, while flowers are small and usually pink. P. graveolens is native to South Africa, but it is now widely cultivated in many countries, e.g. Reunion Island, Egypt, Russia, China, and Morocco, mainly for the production of essential oil. It is used in many different industries, e.g. perfumery, cosmetic, food and beverages industry as well as in veterinary drugs and medicine. Literature data shows that chloroplasts content in leaves reflects a whole plant condition, as they are able to produce chemical energy from the solar energy. Most important of all pigments are chlorophylls that can be found in almost every green part of a plant. However, during plant senescence, photosynthetic pigments are degraded. This research was carried out to determine a chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and also total chlorophylls content in Pelargonium graveolens at different age: one year old, two years old and three years old plants. To prepare samples, fresh leaves from each cultivation have been harvested, than homogenized in a chilled mortar with organic solvent 80% (v/v) acetone and then centrifuged. The absorbance of supernatants was immediately measured at 647 and 663 nm in a spectrophotometer. The outcome shows that in a first stage (first year) of plant growth, when it absorbs nutrients and synthesizes proteins to achieve efficient photosynthesis and undergo rapid expansion, chlorophyll a and b content is the lowest from all studied plants. The best quality pelargoniums are these at the age of two in which there is the biggest amount of green photosynthetic pigments.
Pelargonium graveolens należy do rodziny Geraniaceae. Wykorzystywany jest on w wielu gałęziach przemysłu, m.in. perfumiarstwie, kosmetyce, przemyśle spożywczym czy medycynie. Obecne badanie zostało przeprowadzone w celu ustalenia zawartości chlorofilu a i chlorofilu b w jedno-, dwu- i trzyletnich roślinach z gatunku Pelargonium graveolens. Zebrane zostały świeże liście z każdej ww. upraw, następnie zhomogenizowane w schłodzonym moździerzu w obecności 80% acetonu, a później odwirowane.

Opis:
The study concerned an evergreen herbal plant Waldsteinia trifolia Roch. This species can be found more and more often in garden plantings in Poland. The aim of the study was to estimate the content of photosynthetic pigments, anthocyanins and dry matter as well as the permeability of cytoplasmatic membranes of Waldsteinia leaves. Plants grew in an ornamental plant collection at the premises of the Faculty of Horticulture of the Agricultural University in Kraków. The study was conducted in 2006 and 2007 in the following months: March, May, June, September, October and November. The permeability of cytoplasmatic membranes was estimated based on electrolyte leakage from leaf discs at 20°C in relation to total electrolytes in the tissue after unfreezing. The fi rst days with temperature drops down to around 0°C in autumn resulted in a decrease in chlorophyll a, b and carotenoid content, but significantly increased anthocyanin content. The ratio of chlorophyll a to band the ratio of total chlorophylls to carotenoids did not change in particular months. In both years of study, similar changes in dry matter content of the Waldsteinia leaves were observed. Dry matter content signifi cantly increased in June and November and decreased in May and October. In June and in autumn, after first slight frosts, an increase of electrolyte leakage from the leaf discs was observed. However, high dry matter content (40.3%) was accompanied by lower permeability of the cytoplasmatic membranes of the leaves after winter during March. These results have shown good adaptation of Waldsteinia trifolia plants to the climatic conditions in Poland.
Badania przeprowadzono w latach 2006 i 2007. Zaobserwowano podobne w obu latach zmiany w zawartości suchej masy w liściach waldsteinii tj. wyraźny wzrost w terminie czerwcowym oraz listopadowym, a spadek w maju i październiku.

Cadmium is one of the non-essential metals that have toxic effects on aquatic organisms, including diatoms. Diatoms play significant important roles in the aquatic environment, hence, the presence of cadmium will have a significance growth inhibition to its abundance. In this paper, we tried to clarify the effects of cadmium on growth, chlorophyll-a and carotenoid contents of the diatom Thalassiosira sp. Growth inhibition of the phytoplankton was determined following exposure for 96h to several different concentrations of cadmium solutions in an experiment adapted from ASEAN-Canada CPMS II. Our work shows that IC50 of growth and chlorophyll-a was around 0.32 mg/L and 0.914 mg/L, respectively. In addition, Lowest Observed Effect Concentration (LOEC) and No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) were 0.18 mg/L and 0.1 mg/L, respectively. In conclusion, cadmium inhibits the growth, as well as the photosynthetic pigment contents of Thalassiosira sp.
