Opis:
Do okolic najczęściej oparzonych należą kończyny i tułów.
Burns in children is a medical, social and economic problem. Baby's skin is very sensitive to thermal factors. The most common cause of burns is hot water. Less frequent ones are: direct contact with flame, hot objects or corrosive substances. The most common areas of burns are limbs and torso. The biggest age group among people suffering from burns are children between first and second year of life. The treatment for burns in children is significantly different from that of burned adults. Im-mediate proper first aid to burned child and the ability to deal with an incident at the scene of the accident have big effect on further treatment and rapid recovery. Prognosis for the treatment of burns is directly related to the extent of burns and on its basis, the decision is made about outpatient or inpatient treatment. Quality of first aid given to the patient depends on the basic medical exper-tise of the person providing the first aid. It should be given as soon as possible in accoradance with basic rules, so it is important to have the basic and necessary knowledge about how to handle your child’s burn.

Opis:
Phthalates are a family of industrial chemicals that have been used for a variety of purposes. As the potential consequences of human exposure to phthalates have raised concerns in the general population, they have been studied in susceptible subjects such as pregnant women, infants and children. This article aims at evaluating the impact of exposure to phthalates on reproductive outcomes and children health by reviewing most recent published literature. Epidemiological studies focusing on exposure to phthalates and pregnancy outcome, genital development, semen quality, precocious puberty, thyroid function, respiratory symptoms and neurodevelopment in children for the last ten years were identified by a search of the PubMed, Medline, Ebsco, Agricola and Toxnet literature bases. The results from the presented studies suggest that there are strong and rather consistent indications that phthalates increase the risk of allergy and asthma and have an adverse impact on children's neurodevelopment reflected by quality of alertness among girls, decreased (less masculine) composite score in boys and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Results of few studies demonstrate negative associations between phthalate levels commonly experienced by the public and impaired sperm quality (concentration, morphology, motility). Phthalates negatively impact also on gestational age and head circumference; however, the results of the studies were not consistent. In all the reviewed studies, exposure to phthalates adversely affected the level of reproductive hormones (luteinizing hormone, free testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin), anogenital distance and thyroid function. The urinary levels of phthalates were significantly higher in the pubertal gynecomastia group, in serum in girls with premature thelarche and in girls with precocious puberty. Epidemiological studies, in spite of their limitations, suggest that phthalates may affect reproductive outcome and children health. Considering the suggested health effects, more epidemiologic data is urgently needed and, in the meantime, precautionary policies must be implemented.

Due to the rapid pace of urbanization, the lead-zinc slags previously located outside the settlement turned out to be within the city of Shymkent and began to pose a serious threat to the environment. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of lead-zinc slags on the environment of Shymkent. It has been revealed that the fields of ruderal plant species are inversely correlated with the lead content in the soil, for phyto-indication of the state of soils, the most informative indicators are the phytocenotic composition and the projective covering of soils with vegetation. At the same time, the proportion of annual species in the control is 53.5 ± 5.6%; with an increase in the toxic load, their role gradually weakens, reaching from 14496.0 ± 105.1 mg/kg Pb2+ to 5.2 ± 0.4%. It was found that Dodartia orientalis, Centaurea squarrosa Willd., Plantago lancetofolium are hyperaccumulators of lead ions, while electron microscopic images showed that lead ions accumulate in the intercellular space of plants, forming significant conglomerates of 10–75 nm. The negative influence of lead-zinc waste has been established, which leads to the accumulation of lead in the blood of children and, as a consequence, is the cause of various diseases. The maximum lead content in the amount of 103 micrograms / dl was found in the blood of children in the area of the city, located 800–1000 m from the slag storage site. Developing hypochromic anemia in children indicates its toxic origin. It was revealed that 90% of children have such pathologies as biliary dyskinesia, dental caries, small anomalies of heart development.

The family can be a background of health crises and – at the same time – the greatest source of support for a child. It plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of disorders and increasing the psychological immunity of teenagers. The article presents a number of threats to the mental health of young people, derived from different research. Its main goal is to present the importance of the support system for parents and families in protection of children's mental health. Against this background, some parental errors and deficiencies are analysed as the reasons for ignoring the first symptoms of a child’s crisis. Support for the youth and their families should be provided not only from parents but also from teachers, pedagogues and their wider social environment. Many institutions, including medical staff, schools, governmental and non-governmental organisations may effectively support parents and caregivers in prevention and intervention in a situation of mental crisis. The article discusses the determinants of effective help for families experiencing mental health crises of children.

Opis:
Objectives: WHO's Children's Environment and Health Action Plan for Europe (CEHAPE) focuses on improvements of indoor environments where children spend most of their time. To investigate the relationship between school indoor air pollutants and cognitive performance in elementary school children, a multidisciplinary study was planned in all-day schools in Austria. Materials and Methods: In a cross-sectional study (LuKi study: Air and Children) indoor air pollutants were monitored in nine elementary all-day schools in urban and rural regions of Austria. In addition, school dust and suspended particulates ($\text{PM}_\text{10}$, $\text{PM}_\text{2.5}$) were measured, focusing on semivolatile compounds (e.g. phthalates, phosphororganic compounds [POC]). Health status and environmental conditions were determined by parents' questionnaire, cognitive function was measured by Standard Progressive Matrices (SPM). Results: Overall, 596 children (6-8 years of age) were eligible for the study. Cognitive tests were performed in 436 children. Analysis showed significant correlations of tris(2-chlorethyl)-phosphate (TCEP) in $\text{PM}_\text{10}$ and $\text{PM}_\text{2.5}$ and school dust samples with cognitive performance. Cognitive performance decreased with increasing concentrations of TCEP. Furthermore, cognitive function decreased significantly with increasing CO₂ levels. Conclusions: POC are widely used as plasticizers, flame retardants and floor sealing. This is the first report of a correlation between TCEP in indoor air samples and impairment of cognitive performance in school children. As a precautionary measure, it is recommended to prohibit the use of toxic chemicals and those suspected of a toxic potential in children's environments such as schools.

This essay describes the impact of COVID-19 related policies on the democratic fabric of German society, focusing the situation of children. It applies a methodology of ethics for salutogenesis, exploring, how policies and underlying motifs align with doing the right things for the right reasons. Five key areas are analyzed in the social-political specter of power of health-related judgement, connecting psychology, politics, economy, academia and culture. The discussion finds that the crisis reveals grave and basic flaws in the texture of democratic culture that could be healed by serious measures to reinvigorate the spirit of the German Constitution.

Governments all over the world have taken unparalleled measures to combat the spread of the co[1]ronavirus. Severe restrictions have been imposed, reducing face-to-face contact where possible. This situation seems to be particularly acute for children and youth, who may not understand the orders and bans. Many studies analyzed in this paper have provided evidence that children’s and adole[1]scents’ health has been negatively affected within the last months due to school closures and the need for social and physical distancing because of the coronavirus. Adults should be aware of children’s and adolescents’ difficulties and support them during this unique time. In the face of serious threats currently emerging due to COVID-19, health promotion is essential, as people regain control of their health, protect themselves and manage the potential consequences of the disease. The schools are faced with a huge task of promoting health, preparing students to cope with difficult and uncertain situations, including strengthening their health literacy. Health literacy, which is a set of skills, varies from individual to individual, which means that interventions in this area should focus on improving people’s skills and capacities through educational activities, discussed in this article.

On the one hand the achievements of modern civilisation make life easier in almost every area of human functioning, on the other hand they can cause various difficulties – both in the physical health of the individual and their psychosocial functioning. This is reflected in contemporary literature on the subject and statistical data indicating an increase in the prevalence of health problems in the group of children and adolescents. Over the last hundred years, health ceased to be a negative category meaning only the state of absence of physical illness, and began to be treated in a processual and holistic way. Therefore, the emphasis has been shifted from medical interventions focused on the treatment of the already existing disease to activities focused on developing and strengthening health in the biopsychosocial dimension. The article addresses the issue of children's and adolescent's health in the context of changes that have occurred in understanding it, and consequently also in the area of activities undertaken for its benefit. The article points out the need for actions in the area of health promotion (including health education) which, having a long-term and systemic nature, should be an integral element of the education process. Thus, attention was drawn to the role of parents and teachers as persons responsible for shaping the health of the future generation.

The ‘Little Medic’ project has been carried out at Poznan University of Medical Sciences for six years. It enjoys great popularity. Every year, about 400 pupils from primary schools from Poznan and the surrounding area in the age of 6–12 participate in it. The study aims to present the organizational specificity of the ‘Little Medic’ project, and the opinions about it expressed by teachers participating in the project with their students. At the end of each academic year, teachers take part in an anonymous survey summarizing and assessing the project. The first part of the article presents the method of the ‘Little Medic’ project organization. In particular, it describes the elements distinguishing the project from other children’s universities in Poland. The second part presents the analysis of evaluation data collected during the six years of the project. Long experience in running classes for children as part of the ‘Little Medic’ project allows for conclusions about the usefulness and innovativeness of this form of lesson conduct, and the survey results confirm the high level of teachers’ satisfaction with the proposed way of organizing classes.

Introduction. Parents as day-to-day caregivers looking after their children’s health and upbringing are crucial in the process of hearing loss prevention among the young. The aim of the study was to assess the parents’ knowledge and awareness of hazards bringing about hearing loss, possibilities to prevent this, as well as their reaction in the case of problems of their children with hearing. Material and methods. The research group comprised respondents (402 persons), medical or paramedical professionals. None of the surveyed was a doctor. 56% of the surveyed were inhabitants of large cities, 24% of small towns, and 20% of village, mostly located in the area of Greater Poland (Wielkopolska) (97%). To perform the research a survey was devised. GSES scale was applied as an accessory tool. Results. The subjects surveyed posses a great deal of knowledge concerning basic conditions that could adversely affect the hearing of children. Village inhabitants are half as afraid of hearing loss hazards as the inhabitants of large cities. More than 40% of the respondents claimed they do nothing to counteract their children’s overexposure to noise. In 48.5% of cases, GPs had not drawn parents’ attention to possible complications resulting from upper respiratory tract infections in children. Parents know where they should go to in case their children develop hearing problems or sudden hearing loss. Conclusions. Knowledge and awareness of factors that may trigger hearing loss is not synonymous with avoidance of the problem. Main components of hearing loss prevention among children and youths should be administrative actions, extensive education, and proper childcare at home.
