This article investigates the psychological and philosophical significance of childhood images in I.A. Bunin’s novel Life of Arsenyev, written in emigration. It is concluded that the worldview of a childhood spent in Russia and the memory of this time become the main ethical categories in the work, correlated with the author’s religious symbols of salvation – with words, the happiness of the creative process, with the actualization of the meaning of life and the self-realization of per-sonality.

Zakłócona alegoryzacja dzieciństwa w powieści Szum Magdaleny Tulli wychodzi poza tropologię „ja”, zaproponowaną przez Ryszarda Nycza. Krystalizację obrazów dzieciństwa utrudnia epigenetyczny tryb dziedziczenia traumatycznych doświadczeń przez tzw. drugie pokolenie. Powtórzenie (nawet samej ramy wydarzenia) oznacza też powrót dziedziczonej traumy. Ograniczone udostępnianie trudnej przeszłości (również jako osobowy hermetyzm dorosłych) i tajemnica przeszłości ciążą ku apofatycznej reprezentacji rzeczywistości. W toku narracji ograniczone udostępnianie ma również związek z demencyjną chorobą matki, zyskuje więc motywacje biologiczne, psychologiczne, oprócz historycznych i politycznych. Alegoryzacja dzieciństwa nabiera charakteru substytucyjnego z uwagi na istnienie masek i kamuflaży, tzw. alegorii tożsamościowych (Marta Tomczok), oraz potrzebę afektywnej kompensacji poprzez zastępcze formy społecznych inkluzji. Odrzucona i samotna dziewczynka w fabule utworu Szum Tulli zawiera z matką i ciotką „przymierze wstydu” (Aleksandra Szczepan), żyje w świecie wyimaginowanych figur, funkcjonujących w jej umyśle i na dziecięcych rysunkach (lisa-przyjaciela, esesmana ze związanymi rękoma), stosuje mentalny eskapizm, konsekwentnie gra rolę trudnego i dziwnego dziecka. Na poziomie narracji Tulli sygnalizuje zakłóconą alegoryzację dzieciństwa, które literacko nie ustala się w jednolitym obrazie, poprzez endogeniczność świata wewnętrznego bohaterki, interlokację jej doświadczenia (postpamięciowo dziedziczoną przeszłość rodziców, polsko-włoskie pochodzenie, żydowskie korzenie matki), metafory zamknięcia, ironię jako parabazę alegorii, widmologie literackie, alegoryzację akustyczną, konstrukcję narratora jednocześnie afektującego i afektowanego (Justyna Tabaszewska). Zabiegi te umożliwiają separowanie się postaci od doświadczenia, przenikanie się poziomu autorskiej opowieści z poziomem opowiadanych zdarzeń, wytwarzają podmiot metaleptyczny (Tomasz Kunz).
The disturbed allegorization of childhood in the novel Szum (Noise) by Magdalena Tulli goes beyond the tropology of “I” proposed by Ryszard Nycz. The crystallization of childhood images is hindered by the epigenetic mode of inheriting traumatic experiences by the so-called second generation. Repetition (even of the very frame of happening) also means the return of the inherited trauma. Limited disclosure of the difficult past (also as the personal hermetism of adults) and the mystery of the past gravitate towards an apophatic representation of reality. In the course of the narrative, limited sharing is also associated with the mother’s dementia disease, so it gains biological and psychological motivations in addition to historical and political ones. Allegorization of childhood becomes substitutive due to the existence of masks and camouflages, the so-called identity allegories (Marta Tomczok) and the need for affective compensation through substitute forms of social inclusion. The rejected and lonely girl in the plot of Szum by Tulli makes with her mother and aunt a “covenant of shame” (Aleksandra Szczepan), lives in a world of imaginary figures functioning in her mind and in children’s drawings (a fox-friend, an SS man with his hands tied), uses mental escapism, consistently plays the role of a difficult and strange child. At the narrative level, Tulli signals a disturbed allegorization of childhood, which is not determined in a literary uniform image, through the endogeneity of the protagonist’s inner world, the interlocation of her experience (past of her parents inherited through post-memory, Polish-Italian origin, Jewish roots of her mother), metaphors of closure, irony as a parable of allegory, literary spectmologies, acoustic allegorization, and the construction of a narrator that is simultaneously affectionate and affected (Justyna Tabaszewska). These measures allow the characters to separate from the experience, the level of the author’s story permeating the level of the events told, and create the metalleptic subject (Tomasz Kunz).

This article is the first attempt in Poland to examine the following issues in The Book of Una, the novel by Faruk Šehić: the problems of autobiographic memory, war trauma, going through the trauma situation in a creation process (autobiography as a symbol of individual identity and an attempt to overcome the stressor). The analysis drew attention to the category of a journey into the depths of one’s self within the so-called past life regression present in the work by this Bosnian author. In the course of the examination, it was revealed that the intimate contact established by and between the protagonist with the important figures from his childhood, sentimental objects, the aquatic element, plant world and places of playing, adventure and shelter has a therapeutic dimension.The aforementioned issues were studied with the use of a set of scientific tools in the area of anthropology of culture (abjective experiences and objects, symbolism of blood, category of childhood), theory of trauma, hypnology and hyperesthesia, polemology, humanistic psychiatry, Bachelard’s theory of poetic image, topoanalysis and poetics of the elements. The process of interpretation also included the Jungian concept of structure of personality known as the Shadow archetype.
The aforementioned issues were studied with the use of a set of scientific tools in the area of anthropology of culture (abjective experiences and objects, symbolism of blood, category of childhood), theory of trauma, hypnology and hyperesthesia, polemology, humanistic psychiatry, Bachelard’s theory of poetic image, topoanalysis and poetics of the elements. The process of interpretation also included the Jungian concept of structure of personality known as the Shadow archetype.

Today, ethnic minorities have entered the second wave of emancipation. They are fighting for the right to cultural autonomy, the right to have their own past, history and social memory. The aim of the article is to learn how ethnic minorities “recover” lost social memory in the area of childhood memory and how they work to create ethnic identity again. The text is composed of four parts. The first presents selected aspects of childhood culture. The second is presents Pierre Nora’s concept of memory. The third is presents the results of research on selected ethnic literary texts (Kashubian and Silesian). The author’s conducted semantic and structural analyzes (in the approach of Roland Barthes and Paul Ricoeur). The analyzes allowed us to recognize ethnic childhood as a space of existential suffering and a time of loss of ethnic identity. The answer – in childhood and adulthood – are specific identity strategies. they are aids in constructing a new ethnic identity. The fourth part is Summary and reflection closing the text.

This article explores how Latvian children who were displaced during the Second World War came across their displacement and how they compose the narratives of this childhood experience. Their life story interviews have been preserved in the Latvian National Oral History Archive. Recorded testimonies convey the migration experience in an intense way by vividly depicting the psychological, emotional, and material circumstances that children faced and by revealing common themes relevant to them at the time of the displacement.
Artykuł ukazuje, w jaki sposób łotewskie dzieci, przesiedlone w czasie II wojny światowej, doświadczyły wyjazdu i życia na obczyźnie, oraz to, w jaki sposób tworzą one narracje o tym doświadczeniu z dzieciństwa. Ich historie życia zarejestrowane zostały w wywiadach biograficznych, zarchiwizowanych w łotewskim Narodowym Archiwum Historii Mówionej. W świadectwach tych intensywnie wybija się doświadczenie migracji, a także jej psychologiczne, emocjonalne i materialne okoliczności. Wywiady wskazują także na wspólne tematy, które były istotne dla tych osób w czasie wysiedlenia i pobytu poza krajem pochodzenia.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the topics of refugees and expulsion in conjunction with National Socialism and the Holocaust play an important role in contemporary children’s literature. Literary portrayals of Jewish childhood during the Second World War are mostly based on authentic experiences of eyewitnesses who are still alive. Against the setting of the approaching transition from the “communicative memory” to the “cultural memory” (Assmann 2008, Welzer 2008), literary texts are vitally important for social memorialization. However, so far there has been little empirical exploration into how these texts are read by adolescents and how they find their way into the cultural memory of literature classes. Furthermore, the didactic theory that children’s literature should contribute to intercultural understanding requires an empirical foundation. This was the basis for my study, Literarische Gesprache im interkulturellen Kontext - Discussions about Literature in an Intercultural Context – (Hoffmann 2011). In a qualitative-empirical study, I explored the reception of Mirjam Pressler’s novel Malka Mai – Malka (2002) – by secondary school students in German language classes in Germany and Poland. The aim of my research project was to reconstruct learning potentials in discussions about literature within an intercultural context. Given the novel’s potential meanings and the demands it places upon its readers, I would like to demonstrate in this article the different ways in which it is received, as well as to show which areas of tension lie behind the subjective receptions.

In the article I used fragments of my research studies, prepared on the basis of narrative interviews. I formulated the main research problem in the form of a question: What is the significance of the family in shaping prosocial attitudes among those who perform over-personal tasks? I am also looking for answers to the following questions: Can you find sources of interest in social issues within your and your family biography? Thanks to the use of narrative interviews, I was able to read and understand elements of the subjects reality. I was able to look into the sources and experiences related to the over-personal tasks of the examined persons. Their subjective interpretations of their behaviors, experiences related to different situations, people and events gave a clear picture about the importance of the family in forming a prosocial profile.
W artykule wykorzystałam fragmenty moich badań, przygotowanych na podstawie wywiadów narracyjnych. Główny przyjęty przeze mnie problem badawczy sformułowałam w formie pytania: jakie znaczenie ma rodzina w kształtowaniu postaw prospołecznych u tych osób, które realizują zadania ponadosobiste? Poszukuję również odpowiedzi na pytanie: czy w biografii własnej i rodziny można odnaleźć źródła zainteresowania problematyką społeczną? Dzięki zastosowaniu wywiadów narracyjnych mogłam zrozumieć elementy rzeczywistości badanych. Mogłam dokonać wglądu w źródła i doświadczenia związane z realizacją zadań ponadosobistych badanych osób. Ich subiektywne interpretacje swoich zachowań, przeżyć związanych z różnymi sytuacjami, osobami, wydarzeniami, dały obraz znaczenia rodziny w formowaniu postaw prospołecznych.

Praca stanowi jedną z głównych form aktywności człowieka. Praca Millenialsów we wspomnieniach z dzieciństwa jest obecna i mocno akcentowana. Mogą one umożliwiać odtworzenie okoliczności, w jakich kształtowana była kultura pracy w środowisku wiejskim. Na podstawie refleksji biograficznych możliwa jest rekonstrukcja subiektywnego doświadczania pracy w warunkach i okolicznościach, w jakich przebiegało dzieciństwo. W przypadku pokolenia Millenialsów były to lata dziewięćdziesiąte, czyli początkowy okres transformacji ustrojowej. W środowisku wiejskim przebiegała ona specyficznie. Przebiegi dróg życiowych i zawodowych jak i sylwetki osobowe ówczesnych dzieci wiejskich są związane z doświadczeniami nabytymi przez nich w tamtym okresie. Odwołanie się do refleksji autobiograficznych z okresu dzieciństwa poszerza wiedzę na temat „tamtych czasów” i ukazuje indywidualne doświadczenia związane z pracą. Umożliwia także lepsze poznanie i zrozumienie późniejszego funkcjonowania społecznego, szczególnie zawodowego w okresie dorosłości. W przypadku Millenialsów pochodzących ze środowisk wiejskich we wspomnieniach pracy z okresu dzieciństwa wyraźnie zauważalne jest powszechnie występujące zapracowanie rodziców, ich zmęczenie pracą, częste też wykonywanie przez rodziców dodatkowej pracy w gospodarstwie rolnym prowadzonym na własne potrzeby. Czasu wolnego ani czasu dla dzieci rodzice nie mieli wcale, gdyż treścią wypełniającą kolejne dni była praca zawodowa i w gospodarstwie. Wyraźnie różne są wspomnienia dotyczące pracy poszczególnych rodziców – ojcowie koncentrowali się zazwyczaj na pracy zawodowej, matki – natomiast obok pracy zawodowej dźwigały ciężar prowadzenia domu. Do prac też angażowane były dzieci. Zazwyczaj były to prace związane z opieką nad rodzeństwem, prace porządkowe i samoobsługowe oraz pomoc przy sezonowych pracach polowych. We wspomnieniach z okresu dzieciństwa najstarszych Millenialsów, określanych jako „pokolenie cyfrowe”, nie występują nowe media elektroniczne ani technologie elektroniczne. Praca ich rodziców zazwyczaj była pracą fizyczną. W pamięci dzieci utrwaliła się jako praca zazwyczaj ciężka, wyczerpująca, a jednocześnie konieczna. Była źródłem utrzymania i tak też była traktowana przez rodziców, którzy wykonywali ją z odpowiedzialnością i zaangażowaniem. Nie narzekali na jej nadmiar i powodowane przez nią zmęczenie.
Work is one of the main forms of human activity. The work of Millennials in their childhood memories is present and strongly accentuated. Such memories can make it possible to recreate the circumstances in which the work culture was shaped in the rural environment. Based on biographical reflections, it is possible to reconstruct the subjective experiences of work in the conditions and circumstances of childhood. In the case of the Millennials’ generation, such period was in the nineties, i.e. the initial period of systemic transformation. In the rural environment, it was specific. The life and professional paths as well as the personal profiles of rural children of those times are related to the experiences they acquired at that period of their lives. Appealing to autobiographical reflections from childhood broadens the knowledge of “those times” and shows individual workrelated experiences. It also enables our better knowledge and understanding of later Millennials’ social, (especially professional) functioning, in their adulthood. In the memories of work from the childhood of Millennials coming from rural environments we can clearly notice the widespread overworking of their parents, their work fatigue, and the parents’ frequent additional work on their own farms which were run for their own needs. The parents did not have any free time or time for their children, because their professional and farm work was the content of all the following days, even holidays. The memories of the work of individual parents (mothers and fathers) are clearly different – fathers were usually focused on their professional work, mothers – apart from their professional work, carried the burden of running their homes. Children were also involved in the work. They were usually responsible for taking care of their siblings, cleaning and self-service work, as well as the assistance with seasonal field work. There are no new electronic media or electronic technologies in the childhood memories of the oldest Millennials, called “the digital generation”. Their parents’ work was usually manual. The children remember it as often very hard, exhausting, but also necessary work. It was a source of income and was treated that way by the parents who did it with high responsibility and commitment. They did not complain about its excess and the fatigue it caused.

Przedmiotem studiów empirycznych są w tym artykule teksty wspomnieniowe i opowiadanie Mieczysława Jastruna Wychowanie prowincjonalne, odsyłające czytelnika do okresu dzieciństwa pisarza. Główną tezą artykułu jest założenie, że Jastrun w swojej twórczości stworzył swój własny, spójny i złożony obraz (wzorzec, model) dzieciństwa jako takiego, stąd można go określić metaforycznie mianem przedmiotu jego indywidualnej „antropologii literackiej”. Ponadto zakłada się, że wobec ogólnie powielanego wizerunku dzieciństwa we współczesnej (nowoczesnej) literaturze i kulturze, a także tego, który jest obecny w tradycji, pisarz przyjmuje dwie postawy: polemiczną, gdy wchodzi w swoich refleksjach w spór z niektórymi składnikami tego wizerunku, i deskrypcyjną, w szczególności autopsyjną (tu dostrzegamy brak polemiki, dążenie do odzwierciedlenia ogólnych mniemań na temat dzieciństwa – potwierdzone we własnych biograficznych, chłopięcych przeżyciach). Metodologia tego artykułu została więc oparta na wyjaśnieniu relacji pomiędzy gestem polemicznym i tendencją opisową (zawieszeniem polemiki). Zwraca się w artykule uwagę, że tak tekst wspomnieniowy, jak i opowiadanie prowadzą czytelnika do tego samego prototypu pamięciowego, na co wskazują istotne podobieństwa między nimi (postaci, miejsca zdarzeń, punkty ich widzenia, nawet te same zwroty językowe).  
The subject of the empirical study in this article is the recollection-based texts and the story “Wychowanie prowincjonalne” by Mieczysław Jastrun, which refer the reader to the author’s childhood. The main thesis in this article is the assumption that Jastrun in his works created his own coherent and complex image (template, model) of childhood as such; therefore, it can be metaphorically called the subject of his individual “literary anthropology.” What is more, it is assumed that the generally copied picture of childhood in the contemporary (modern) literature and culture, as well as the one presented in the tradition, are referred to by the writer by means of two types of attitude: a polemic one, where his reflections get involved in the dispute with some parts of this image, and a descriptive one, in particular that based on own experience (here is no polemics but aiming to reflect general opinions on childhood—confirmed in his own biographical experience as a boy). Thus, the methodology of this article is based on the explanation of the relation between a polemic gesture and a descriptive tendency (suspension of polemics). Attention is drawn in the article to the fact that both the recollection-based text and the short story refer the reader to the same memory prototype, which is confirmed by significant similarities between them (the characters, places of the events, their viewpoints, even the same linguistics expressions).

The article explores nostalgia as a cognitive and affective mechanism of memory aimed at the restoration and healing of one’s Self and developing knowledge of one’s Self by means of involving oneself in the individual or collective past. Employing method of narrative inquiry with the elements of autobiographical inquiry and fiction writing, the article focuses primarily on the individual nostalgic experience unlike nostalgia as a collective phenomenon. The article relies on interpretative analysis of the author’s short stories, selected diary entries, interviews with female immigrants in Colombia and travel blog entries in the broader context of the sociological, psychological and philosophical studies of memory and nostalgia and literary and cinematic works that explore the relevant topics.

The article entitled “(Im)Perfect Memories in Jacqueline Woodson’s Another Brooklyn” explores the fallibility of memory as presented in Another Brooklyn, a novel by an African American author Jacqueline Woodson. The text presents the idea that personal memories change due to the passage of time along with the new experiences of an individual, and relates it to the studied novel. Special attention is given to different dimensions of grief and loss presented in the analyzed story. The mourning after the loss of loved ones is explored through the use of concepts such as Elizabeth Kübler-Ross’ five stages of grief, the selective amnesia and the idea of continuing bonds. The process of growing up is also briefly considered as a mourning process over losing the innocence and safety provided by childhood. Further, the article presents the hardships of growing up without a mother in an unsafe neighbourhood, the loss of vital friendships and the search of a better life - all introduced through the recollections which occurred after a significant passage of time and the accumulation of experiences which lend themselves to the change of the mindset of the main character.

The study focuses on forms of appearance of childhood and old age in selected prose works of Slovak literary realism. The focus of the analysis are Kukučín's prose works from the school setting and Tajovský's short stories with a dominant character of a grandfather. In works of both authors the memoir type of prose can be found, which was inspired by memories of their childhood and strong autobiographical elements of children characters. For Tajovský, there is a tendency to harmonic imaging childhood and old age as a symbiosis of the two period of human being.

“Night has enshrouded my childhood” write Jorge Semprun. Civil War and exile have erased any trace of the childhood he spent in Madrid. What was left to the writer were only flashes of memory and an old picture of his mother. Jorge Semprun was eight years of age when his mother died of septicemia. Through writing, thirty years later, he was able to evoke her death, but how was he to tell about her absence? Between fiction and reality, five of Jorge Semprun’s novels recreate his childhood. His mother will first of all be an absence or an implicit presence behind his relating the city of his childhood. Having set the scene, ghostly characters whose identities are undefined but whose discourses become more and more outlined will appear. The mother will become a nostalgic absence. Her features, her character will be sketched out. Jorge Semprun will move forward hiding behind the multiple identities of his characters and the freedom which fiction provides him. It will be up to the last character, a fictive double of the writer, to find the last traces of a mother who has turned into a haunting presence.

This article about Federico Fellini’s Amarcord (1973) and Ingmar Bergman’s Fanny and Alexander (1982) concerns one aspect of the directors’ childhood memories, namely how authoritarian institutions are used to disrupt otherwise fairly idyllic and nostalgic lives and worlds. The films blend detailed memories with playful fantasies, combine experiences of the directors’ alter egos, Titta and Alexander, with rituals of family and larger communities in the provincial cities of Rimini and Uppsala. In each film, bitter memories are given a central role. This article explores the similarities of these bitter memories, as they are imagined in the mature auteurs’ last exceptionally successful films.

Present article aims at analyzing a memoir of John Maxwell Coetzee (better known as J. M. Coetzee), an outstanding writer from The Republic of South Africa. The title of his memoir is Boyhood. Scenes from Provincial Life. It is quite obvious, that – on account of the limits of human memory and language – no one is able to reproduce his personal past in the story and may only reveal its current representation. Accordingly the authoress of the article doesn’t look in the considered memoir for the truth of facts, but for the truth of narrative which means the current image or representation of personal past. She is also interested how J. M. Coetzee tells his boyhood experiences, which factors determine the identity of the child and the young man, and what is the impact of the family and social environment on the life of the man, on his development, behaviour, self-concious and important life choices.
Przedmiotem zainteresowania są w prezentowanym tekście wspomnienia wybitnego południowoafrykańskiego pisarza – Johna Maxwella Coetzee, zatytułowane Chłopięce lata. Sceny z prowincjonalnego życia. Lektura wybranego tekstu stanowi dla autorki pretekst, by zastanowić się nad tym, jak zapisywany jest w narracji autobiograficznej proces tworzenia własnej tożsamości, kształtowania własnego Ja, jaki jest wpływ dziedzictwa rodzinnego oraz otoczenia społecznego na los człowieka, a także, jakie obrazy dzieciństwa wyłaniają się z badanej opowieści oraz na ile są one zgodne z ugruntowanymi kulturowo wyobrażeniami tego okresu życia. Tym, czego autorka poszukuje w opowieści Coetzee i za czym podąża, nie jest jednak prawda faktów, ale tak zwana prawda narracyjna, powiązana z kategorią tożsamości narracyjnej, czyli wyobrażenia podmiotu o samym sobie, które to wyobrażenie podmiot ujawnia i udostępnia innym w formie autonarracji. Z uwagi na przyrodzone ograniczenia języka oraz ludzkiej pamięci nikt nie jest bowiem w stanie dokonać wiernego odtworzenia własnej biografii, jest zdolny jedynie odsłonić jej aktualne wyobrażenie.
