Opis:
Objective: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a role in cancerogenesis processing and damage tissues. Furthermore, oncological treatment may impair proper function of the gut barrier. The aim of this study was to measure intestinal permeability in children in clinical remission for solid tumours and to search for a possible relationship between free radicals and the intestinal barrier. No such investigation in children has been reported so far. Research Methods and Procedures: The prospective study consisted of 19 paediatric patients with cancer after completion of chemotherapy. 32 healthy children from the outpatients clinics were recruited for measurement of intestinal permeability and antioxidant barrier as a control group. Intestinal permeability was assessed by measurement of urinary lactulose and mannitol after oral challenge. Antioxidant enzymes: superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in erythrocytes were assessed. Ischemia modified albumin (IMA) concentration was measured in serum. Results: Cancer patients excreted less mannitol and more lactulose versus controls. The ratio of lactulose to mannitol was significantly higher in oncological children vs control (mean 0.188 and 0.0453, respectively, p=0.0006,). Significantly higher IMA level in the oncological group vs control was noted (mean 123.8 and 87.3 U/ml, respectively, p=0.0037). No correlation between intestinal permeability and oxidative stress barrier was found. Conclusions: Our data shows that intestinal barrier is damaged in paediatric cancer patients after chemotherapy. IMA is believed to play a protective role in the defence against tissue damage. No correlation was found between these two barriers.

Opis:
High-dose chemotherapy currently used in the treatment of children with cancer may induce late effects on psychosocial and cognitive functioning in some of them. The aim of the study was to evaluate psychosocial functioning of childhood cancer survivors living in rural regions. In total, 29 children entered the study. The children were diagnosed as having cancer between 1993-1995 in a single centre. Each patient was examined 5 years after the completion of cancer therapy. The children had been diagnosed with leukemia and lymphoma (72.4%), and solid tumours. Self-report questionnaires, as well as standardized psychological test (WISC-R, WAIS-R-PL) were performed for the evaluation of psychosocial and cognitive functioning of the patients. Most of the studied cancer survivors living in rural areas did not reveal diffi culties with cognitive and psychosocial functioning. In some patients, however, we observed more diffi culties in verbal tasks and existing major learning diffi culties. Cancer survivors living in rural areas in our region may be more unprivileged due to poor additional supporting services.

Opis:
The survival rate of children suffering from cancer has increased, but collateral effects have been observed. A mixed-method was used to evaluate cancer children’s language and cognitive abilities. Variables such as IQ and verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory and processing speed were tested. Further-more, a semiguided 30-minute-long conversation on everyday matters was used for linguistic evaluation. Results confirm that language problems were present at phonological, lexical-semantic, structural or syntactic, pragmatic and non-verbal levels.

Opis:
According to the age-period-cohort projection of lung cancer incidence (ICD-10 codes C33-C34), smoking prevention will be crucial for both men and women longevity. Lung cancer remains the main cancer cause of death among males in Poland. In 2014 the number of deaths in Poland caused by lung cancer among men was more than twice as high as for women. The study is focused on identification of attitudes influencing the propensity to smoke, which is performed by structural equation modelling (SEM) based on weighted least squares means and variance adjusted (WLSMV) estimation. Good fit of the presented models is demonstrated by RMSEA, NNFI and CFI values. Reliability of scales is assessed by ordinal alpha and ordinal theta coefficients. Commitment to learning in childhood exhibits the highest standardized effect on propensity to smoke, which is an argument for youth smoking prevention. Structural equation model was estimated for men and women separately because of gender differences in smoking determinants. A strong character, individualism and self-reliance are the factors, which increase smoking propensity among males. These can be treated as features of masculinity and are not statistically important determinants of being a smoker for females. Depressive disorders, being a victim of violence as adults are statistically significant determinants of smoking among women.
