Opis:
This paper will present the results of a study of an educational project on visual metaphors in children’s initiated discourse. The purpose of the study was to identify children’s metaphorical skills in recognizing similarities and noticing differences between the target domain and the source domain of visual metaphor in Iwona Chmielewska’s artistic picture book Two People, dedicated to the issue of community. In the designed didactic intervention activities, the research material came from participant observation, focus interviews and analysis of children’s creations (graphic visualizations). The research was carried out with a group of third-graders in selected elementary schools, in a metropolitan environment. The results of the research show children’s preferences for translating one area of metaphor by another, as well as strategies for constructing children’s knowledge about life in the community. In addition, they point to the need to expand the educational environment in Polish educational culture.
W artykule przedstawione zostaną wyniki badań projektu edukacyjnego poświęconego metaforom wizualnym w zainicjowanym dyskursie dziecięcym. Celem badania było rozpoznanie dziecięcych umiejętności metaforyzacyjnych w zakresie rozpoznawania podobieństw i dostrzegania różnic pomiędzy domeną docelową a domeną źródłową metafory wizualnej w artystycznej książce obrazkowej Iwony Chmielewskiej Dwoje ludzi, poświęconej problematyce wspólnoty.

Opis:
Drawing on frame theory, corpus-linguistic methods and parliamentary Hansards data, the paper examines the discursive framing of children in Ghanaian parliamentary discourse. The analysis shows that children are framed within the context of child rights and protection, child labour, child marriage and child trafficking. While Ghanaian parliamentarians think that children should be protected from child labour, they challenge the international description of child labour; they think that child labour should be defined within cultural-specific contexts, for child apprenticeship is not child labour and child labour not child apprenticeship. Again, the MPs raise concerns about what constitutes child trafficking as described by international bodies and organisations. Child marriage is unequivocably condemned by Ghanaian MPs. While the fight against these ills affecting children is strongly advocated by the MPs, the success of such fight is unclear. These discourses around children are indications of how children are included in national discourses.

The paper presents the results of an educational research project implemented in the school year 2016/2017 in selected primary schools in urban environment (Łódź). The aim of the study was to diagnose oppositional discursive strategies (initial opposition movements, relationships between partners, reaching agreement), in a group of thirty 8- to 9-year-olds and 9- to 10-year-olds. The research was conducted in a place that provides children with natural play conditions (school common room). The investigator appeared in the role participant as an observer (the researcher came from the examined environment and had the opportunity to “blend into” the events). The material came from participant observation. The observation embraced practical and socio-cognitive activity of the pupils. The results enables recognition of cognitive-social and communicative-interactive competences of the child. In none of the observed opposition episodes physical violence was applied to the interlocutor (only in a few cases children continued to dispute). In the process of reaching agreement in disputable situations, the children focused on agreeing on conflicting behaviours, opinions or views without an adult intermediary (despite the fact that children did not always reach an immediate agreement in the disputed situation).

Article addresses the problem of child’s and the educational system’s readiness to start school by children six years old. It is a proposition of different approach to this problem and recognizing school readiness in a double perspective, as ‘the readiness (of the child) to school’ and ‘readiness of the school (for a child)’. It gives an opportunity to take into account a broad range of factors involved in the process leading to effective support of the child in the education system and support of the education system. The text is also a proposal to change the way of leading public debate on education and reducing of school age. It introduces the concept of ‘discourse of quality’ and ‘iscourse of meaning making’ as an alternative which allows consideration of different points of view and striving for mutual understanding. It also introduces a proposal to adopt a theoretical framework for analyzing the readiness of state, society, institutions, families, and the childe for mutual interactions. The aim of these interactions is to increase the effectiveness in realizing both, personal and social goals. The purpose of this article is an attempt to leave the vicious circle of ‘discourse of quality’, which in current, Polish reality, underlies growing social divisions and conflicts between ‘followers’ of different approaches to childhood, upbringing and education. It is a proposal to adopt such perspective to analysis of the problem, which can be a basis for planning practical solutions in the sphere of public debate and planning activities within the ‘child - institution’ system.

The Author of the essay asks the following question: do parents have licentia rhetorica for talking about their experience? In her analysis she primarily focuses on an Internet magazine „Bachor. Bezradnik dla nieudacznych rodziców („Brat. Helpless-guide for looser–parents”) which represents a very particular way of talking about the child, a way which varies from parents’ standard linguistic behaviour. The Author traces the fragments which include intentionally created non–literality and subsequently proceeds to reconstruct the types of reception she observed. At the same time, the Author ponders on the reasons why some recipients resist the possibility of nonliteral reading or why they object to it – and, as a result, read messages literally. The considerations are presented in a broader perspective of the reflection upon the media motivated social and cultural transformations of rhetorical standards of talking about the child.

Opis:
This article presents an analysis of discourses on the subject of parental involvement in school education of a child and aims to emphasize the complexity of the topic and the diversity of research positions, as well as further practical implications for the theoretical assumptions adopted. Initial considerations present the terminology functioning in the context of the parent-school relationship. Concepts such as cooperation and partnership (familiar in Poland) have been juxtaposed with English-language concepts engagement and involvement, relating to the participation in the child’s education and/or supporting a child during learning. While English-language terminology stresses the function of this involvement and participation, which is improving the child’s school achievements, the concepts of cooperation and partnership, prevalent in Poland, emphasize the very essence of the relationship and its determinants. In this work, these concepts are presented against the background of the dominant instrumental-technical discourse and a less-emerging but very important critical-emancipatory discourse. Looking at the issue from different sides and analyzing its multifaceted structure allows to broaden the knowledge about the “figure” of a parent who is now emerging in education as a participant in the space of family-school relations.

The aim of the authors is to show the situation of the child in contemporary Poland at a time of a policy of ‘good change’ viewed through the lens of children’s rights guaranteed by the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The authors analysed a discourse of the Ombudsmen for Children’s interventions in order to reconstruct the image of being of the child in a new socio-political reality in Poland. The analysis shows the disagreement between the assumptions of the pro-family state policy and the situation of the child in Poland. Concern about child welfare presented by the governmental authorities is apparent and insufficient, which adversely affects children’s well-being and the quality of their lives.

Opis:
This article discusses a study that explored the intellectual and ethical foundations of the discourses on children’s right of self-determination, starting with a critical examination of the United Nations Conventions on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC, 1989). Whilst the ambiguous position of children and children’s rights in society that underpins the UNCRC is acknowledged, the article argues that a shift towards the positioning of children’s as agents has been developing since the 1990s. For instance, this is demonstrated by the development of Early Childhood Education as a pedagogical discourse based centred on children’s right to play an agentic role in shaping their educational experience. As discussed in the second part of the article Early Childhood Education lends itself as an informative case-study for the development of a discourse on children self-determination towards a mainstream status. Early Childhood Education positions young children as agents who can make choice and can construct valid knowledge. Paraphrasing Freire’s description of critical pedagogy, in the discourse of Early Childhood Education the emphasis on children’s agency constructs a view of education from children, for children, for adults.

The paper analyzes antagonistic discourses on child corporal punishment, and in particular public statements on the corporal punishment ban introduced to the Polish Family Violence Act in 2010. Author’s vantage points are rhetorical analysis model developed by Ibarra and Kitsuse, and Zerubavel’s method of analyzing social classifications. Particular attention is paid to how the defenders of corporal punishment debunk principal claims pressed by its opponents, concerning the problem’s definition, scope, causes, consequences and proposed solutions. Analysis suggests that the discourses in question are to a large extent „asymmetrical”: the opponents focus on individual psychological processes, occurring in punished children and punishing parents, whereas the defenders shift the focus to the relationship between the family and the state, claiming that the corporal punishment ban confers too much power to the state over the natural family process.

Opis:
The topic of children's participation in various issues was updated in the second half of the last century. It was largely due to the adoption of an important international document such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Children are as important participants in social life as adults so they have the right to express their opinions on various issues related to their activities, as well as to take into account these opinions by adults in decision-making in the family, in school, in the community, etc. Russian society is dominated by the traditional discourse of the perception of children as human becoming, socially and mentally immature, not-yet-an-adult. To study the parental discourse of children's participation in family issues, empirical material of the network discussion organized at the parental forum called Vladmama (Vladivostok, Russia) is used. In order to organize the discussion, an information injection was carried out. It was the description of the imagined problematic situation of child-parental relations on the issue of child’s participation in family affairs. The 81 messages received from 25 users were analyzed according to James Gee approach.  Seven Gee’s “building tasks” (Activities; Identities; Relationships; Politics; Connections; Sign Systems and Knowledge) are researched on the materials of mother’s forum. The process of creating value is always connected with the exercise of power. In our case, mothers using their power as parents redefine the meanings of children's participation. The main resource that opens the way for adults to power is money. Earning money is interpreted by the participants of the forum as a way for a child to involve in the adult’s world, an opportunity to legalize the child’s right to express his/her own opinion and defend this opinion. Other sources of parent’s power are their own life experience, knowledge and social skills.

Discussions about the support system for children experiencing violence have been taking place both on an international forum as well as locally in Poland. (Zmarzlik, 2011; Wójcik, 2013; Jarosz, 2007; Jarosz, 2008; Jarosz, 2018; Dąbrowska, 2012). The questions about who should undertake tasks in this area and what their scope and type should be are still unresolved. Individuals who work with abused children agree that teachers may be an important link in the support system due to their role. The purpose of the current study is to examine the tasks of the school in the context of the experience of children growing up in a family with a problem of domestic violence. In contemporary discourses on preventing domestic violence against children, the active participation of the children themselves in creating solutions in this area is increasingly emphasized. Due to the participatory and emancipatory character of the project, the current research represents the paradigm of qualitative methodology and, within it, the assumptions of radical humanism. The final result is a description which includes answers to the above research questions and an analysis of legal and statutory actions aimed at social emancipation through education and participation of individuals experiencing domestic violence. In light of international standards of support for abused children, education can and should play a significant support role. Education and participation are considered significant factors in the social emancipation of children - victims of domestic violence - and their families. However, in the perception of individuals experiencing violence, schools do not effectively fulfill their role in this respect. It seems that the place a teacher will take in the process of supporting abused children and their families will depend largely on how the teachers themselves define their own role, as well as on the appropriate legislative solutions for their education. I think that the curricula of teachers’ studies should not only include obligatory exercises in cooperation procedures and communication skills workshops, but they should also address issues shaping active attitudes towards the situations the teachers will find themselves in over the course of their careers.

Language used by parents to communicate with children is characterized by specific features. Adults use different language in communicating with other adults than in communicating with children. This paper is focused on analysing authentic recordings of common spoken discourses in families related to specific situations and activities (for example, children getting ready for school, art and craft activities, sitting at the table, etc.). The analysis will focus on examining the illocutionary language functions used to communicate the child’s appraisal (mainly praise, criticism, reproach), i.e. on the parent’s intent to express the appraisal of a child. The analysis draws upon the frequency of illocutionary language functions (in the whole sample, in pre-defined age categories of children, in specific activities offering examples of spoken discourse); further, the indication of illocutionary functions as expressed in the spoken discourse will be explored.
