Opis:
A field experiment involving the cultivation of common valerian was conducted on loess soil in Abramów (Lublin region) in the period 2007-2009. Qualitative parameters of herbal raw material obtained from this plant as well as in-crop weed infestation were evaluated depending on the protection method and forecrop. Hand-weeded plots, in which a hand hoe was used, were the control. In the other treatments, weeds were controlled using various herbicides and a mechanical implement (brush weeder). Potato and winter wheat + field pea cover crop were the forecrops for common valerian crops. A hypothesis was made that the use of a brush weeder and herbicides not registered for application in valerian crops would have a positive effect on this plant’s productivity and weed infestation in its crops. It was also assumed that the introduction of a cover crop would allow the elimination of differences in the forecrop value of the crop stands in question. The best quantitative and qualitative parameters of common valerian raw material as well as the largest reduction of incrop weed infestation were recorded after the application of the herbicides which were not type approved. The use of the brush weeder in the interrows also had a beneficial effect on productivity of the plant in question, but secondary weed infestation at the end of the growing season of common valerian turned out to be its disadvantage. Traditional crop protection methods used in common valerian crops were less effective in weed infestation reduction and they resulted in lower plant productivity and raw material quality. Potato proved to be a better forecrop for common valerian than winter wheat + field pea; however, this positive effect was not confirmed statistically. The following annual weeds: Chenopodium album, Galinsoga parviflora, Stellaria media, were predominant in the common valerian crop. Traditional weed control methods resulted in the dominance of some dicotyledonous weeds, such as Viola arvensis, Galium aparine, Capsella bursa-pastoris.

A criterion of chemical weed control should be in contemporary plant protection thresholds of biological and economic harmfulness of definite weed species and their whole communities. Variability of the above values in relation to such factors, as weed species and its competitive power, spatial arrangement of plants in the stand, variety, competitive ability and yielding level of the given crop as well as soil conditions of the given site has been proved in the paper basing on the evidence from microplot and field experiments.

Fundamental assumptions of sustainable agriculture include environmental protection and preservation of agrocenosis biodiversity as well. However realization of these objectives is disturbed, in high degree, by plant protection measures. Pest, disease or weed control requires application of active substances, from which the chemical ones are the most environmentally harmful. Due to the harmful environmental, human and animal impact, chemical plant protection was submitted to severe criticism over 40 years ago. That resulted in elaboration of new conception for integrated plant protection and then development of rules for integrated production system, modification of active substances assortment as well as development of advanced plant protection technology. There has been also issued the Plant Protection Good Practice Code. Compliance with the Code rules enables elimination or reduction of unfavorable effects of chemical plant protection measures.

Opis:
Digitaria insularis (sourgrass) is a monocotyledon weed of difficult control and high in- vasive behavior. Atrazine is widely applied in the Americas to control weeds in maize cul- ture, but its efficiency against D. insularis is limited. The incorporation of atrazine into poly(epsilon-caprolactone) nanocapsules increased the herbicidal activity against suscep- tible weeds; however, the potential of this nanoformulation to control atrazine-tolerant weeds including D. insularis has not yet been tested. Here, we evaluated the post-emergent herbicidal activity of nanoatrazine against D. insularis plants during initial developmental stages. The study was carried out in a greenhouse, using pots filled with clay soil. Plants with two or four expanded leaves were treated with conventional or nanoencapsulated at- razine at 50 or 100% of the recommended dosage (1,000 or 2,000 g ∙ ha −1 ), followed by the evaluation of physiological, growth, and control parameters of the plants. Compared with conventional herbicide, both dosages of nanoatrazine induced greater and faster inhibition of D. insularis photosystem II activity at both developmental stages. Atrazine nanoencap- sulation also improved the control of D. insularis plants, especially in the stage with two expanded leaves. In addition, nanoatrazine led to higher decreases of dry weight of four- leaved plants than atrazine. The use of the half-dosage of nanoatrazine was equally or more efficient in affecting most of the evaluated parameters than the conventional formulation at full dosage. Overall, these results suggest that the nanoencapsulation of atrazine potenti- ated its post-emergent herbicidal activity against D. insularis plants at initial developmental stages, favoring the control of this atrazine-tolerant weed.

Opis:
Two field experimental trials were carried out in central Italy, in 2005 and 2006, on biomass sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] in order to assess weed control efficacy and selectivity to the crop of some pre- and post-emergence herbicides applied at different doses and in different mixtures. All herbicides showed good selectivity to the crop, although postemergence treatments showed higher transitory phytotoxicity effects than pre-emergence treatments, especially when high temperatures occurred after treatments, decreasing the selectivity of leaf herbicides (i.e. MCPA, 2,4-D, bromoxynil and dicamba). Considering pre-emergence applications, terbuthylazine alone against broadleaves or in mixtures at low doses with s-metolachlor against mixed infestations (grasses + broadleaves), seemed to be the best options to obtain a good selectivity to the sorghum and a high weed control level. Aclonifen showed some limits in terms of weed spectrum and could be recommended only against simplified broadleaf weed infestations without the presence of less susceptible weeds, like Amaranthus retroflexus, Portulaca oleracea and Solanum nigrum. Propachlor seemed not to be advisable due to the low efficacy against all the major broadleaf warmseason weed species in the Mediterranean areas. Considering post-emergence applications, all treatments gave quite similar results in terms of weed control, although, the mixture of terbuthylazine + bromoxynil seemed to be the best option due to bromoxinil’s higher efficacy than other foliar herbicides, such as MCPA, 2,4-D and dicamba, which can increase the efficacy of terbuthylazine alone especially under dry weather conditions. There were no significant differences in sorghum biomass between herbicide treatments, although, the more selective pre-emergence treatments showed, on average, a higher biomass yield value than the less selective post-emergence treatments. For these reasons, biomass values seemed to be more related to herbicide selectivity than to herbicide efficacy, especially in cases of scarce competitiveness of weed flora.

Opis:
At a global scale, biological invasions represent one of the most important threats to biodiversity conservation. The Carpobrotus (Aizoaceae) genus, which is native to South Africa, has been introduced into five different continents and is particularly invasive in many coastal habitats. The application of glyphosate avoids some problems associated with manually controlling Carpobrotus over large spatial scales. However, before this practice can be extended and its impact minimized, its effectiveness under different application conditions must be assessed first. Thus, glyphosate was sprayed at different concentrations (0.5, 0.4, 0.3, 0.2, 0.1, and 0.05 g/m2) on experimental plots with 100% Carpobrotus coverage to determine the minimum effective dose. Tarping was also evaluated as an alternative method for Carpobrotus management over reduced areas. Thus, four different weed-control fabric types were tested: black anti-weed fabric, sewn felt, black G-300 polyethylene, and Fijavert coconut-anti-weed matting on experimental plots with 100% Carpobrotus coverage. The obtained results showed that the minimum effective dose of glyphosate which prevents Carpobrotus regrowth in dune ecosystems was 0.4 g/m2. It was also shown that at least three months of tarping were required under winter conditions to produce complete Carpobrotus plant wilting and thus, prevent their regrowth. No significant effect on Carpobrotus growth was observed in terms of the fabric type used for the tarping tests. The presence of native species seedlings in the experimental plots after the death of the Carpobrotus plants following the application of herbicides or tarping was also monitored.

Opis:
Life cannot exist without water. Appropriate management of water, from the water’s source to its utilization, is necessary to sustain life. Aquatic weeds pose a serious threat to aquatic environments and related eco-environments. Short- and long-term planning to control aquatic weeds is extremely important. Water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms, is one of the world’s worst pests with a bad reputation as an invasive weed. In this study we are seeking the possibility of using certain chemicals with a natural background, for controlling water hyacinth since there is a delicate balance that needs to be taken into account when using herbicides in water. Five compounds, namely: acetic acid, citric acid, formic acid, and propionic acid, in three concentrations (10, 15, and 20%) were applied (i.e. as a foliar application under wire-house conditions) and compared with the use of the herbicide glyphosate (1.8 kg ∙ ha–1). All of the five compounds performed well in the control of the water hyacinth. As expected, the efficacy increased as the concentration was increased from 10 to 20%. With formic and propionic acids, the plants died earlier than when the other acids or the herbicide glyphosate, were used. Acetic acid came after formic and propionic acids in terms of efficacy. Citric acid ranked last. Formic acid/propionic acid mixtures showed superior activity in suppressing water hyacinth growth especially at the rate of (8 : 2) at the different examined concentrations (3 or 5 or 10%) compared to the formic acid/acetic acid mixtures. Using the formic acid/propionic acid mixture (8 : 2; at 3%) in the open field, provided good control and confirmed the viability of these chemicals in the effective control of water hyacinth. Eventually, these chemical treatments could be used on water for controlling water hyacinth. In the future, these chemicals could probably replace the traditional herbicides widely used in this regard. These chemicals are perceived as environmentally benign for their rapid degradation to carbon dioxide and water. For maximum efficiency thorough coverage especially in bright sunlight is essential.

Efficient weed management is essential for avoiding competition for water, light, and nutrient resources in semiarid zones. Chemical weed control with glyphosate was evaluated on perennial wall-rocket (Diplotaxis tenuifolia), artichoke thistle (Cynara cardunculus), slender wild oat (Avena barbata), and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne). Plants at early, middle and advanced vegetative stages were used in this study. Glyphosate potassium salt was applied at rates of 0.0675 (1/16x), 0.135 (1/8x), 0.27 (1/4x), 0.54 (1/2x), 1.08 (x) and 2.16 (2x) kg acid equivalent (ae) ⋅ ha–1. Glyphosate combined with 2,4-D amine salt was evaluated at rates of 1.08 kg ae ⋅ ha–1 and 0.53 kg active ingredient (ai) ⋅ ha–1, respectively. The volume of the spray was 100 l ⋅ ha–1 with 86 droplets ⋅ cm–2 and a Volume Median Diameter (VMD) of 421.19 μm. In general, all the tested weeds were controlled with a quarter of the label rate. Three sizes of tested plants were controlled in a similar way at the same glyphosate dose rate. Moreover, the addition of 2,4-D to glyphosate did not produce an increase in the control of broadleaf weeds. The results showed that glyphosate was effective in controlling the tested weed species, including low application rates for all the growth stages in the southwestern Buenos Aires province.

The fight against weeds in the organic cultivation of herbal plants, both raw and for seeds, is a big challenge for growers. The paper compares the chemical (bentazon, 960 g·ha–1 and fluazifop-P-butyl, 150 g·ha–1) and nonchemical (scattering mustard seed meal in two doses 1.5 and 3.0 t·ha–1) control of weeds in the cultivation of lemon balm for seeds. Additionally, the influence of these factors on the yield of fresh herb and seeds of lemon balm and the sowing value of seeds was evaluated. The best method to control the weed infestation was to use mustard seed meal in an amount of 3.0 t∙ha–1. Scattering of mustard seed meal in that dose reduced the number and weight of weeds on average from two years of research by 52.1 and 60.2% in relation to unweeded control. Following methods were slightly less effective: bentazon and application of mustard seed meal in quantity of 1.5 t·ha–1. The largest yield of fresh lemon balm herb was collected from plots where mustard seed meal was used in an amount of 3.0 t∙ha–1. Seeds harvested from plots, on which mustard seed meal was used in a larger quantity was characterized by the lowest sowing value determined by the lowest energy and capacity of germination and the highest share of nongerminated seeds. Lowering the amount of used mustard seed meal to 1.5 t·ha–1 significantly improved their sowing value. Although this method was less effective in counteracting weeds than using larger dose, it provided comparable effects of reducing the number and weight of weeds in relation to chemical protection.

Weed control is an important issue for environmental protection all around the world. Traditional hand weed control is laborious whereas chemical control is costly and a threat to the atmosphere. A chemical patch weed control system is an optimized system but lacks cheap technical equipment. This research outlines a design process and test of a braking system that can be applied during the designing of an autonomous braking system for a 2017 Yamaha Grizzly 700. The system is intended to be used as an autonomous weed chemical spraying. A bolt-on approach that did not require any manipulation of the stock, an internal braking system was followed to reduce the complexity and installation time of multiple systems. Three different types of autonomous braking system solutions were initially investigated, with the linear actuator solution being decided on through the assistance of a weighted decision matrix. The system was designed around a 30 kg hand force; however, a spare actuator of approximately 20 kg of force was repurposed and used instead. Finite element analysis concluded that all major components within the proposed system were suitable for a lifetime of at least 1,000,000 cycles with a mild steel yield stress failure criterion of 370 MPa. A stationary test for the system was conducted to determine the success of the system, which pushed the brake lever approximately 25% of its disengaged the expectation and could be used to apply the ATV’s brakes autonomously while retracting the gear interlocking mechanism enough to change gears.

Th is study assessed the efficacy of control by different herbicides in a pot experiment and estimated the molecular status of resistance to sulfonylureas in analysed populations and its effect on the effi cacy of different chemical treatments. The three most effective herbicide rotation schemes were: 1) chlorsulfuron + isoproturon, ethametsulfuron + metazachlor + quinmerac, chlorsulfuron + isoproturon; 2) prosulfocarb + difl ufenican, ethametsulfuron + quizalofop-p-ethyl, prosulfocarb + diflufenican; 3) diflufenican + flufenacet, quizalofop-p-ethyl, diflufenican + flufenacet. In most cases it was more difficult to destroy 100% of the resistant population from Modgarby where the majority of plants had no mutation in the als gene. In the resistant population from Babin there were signifi cantly more individuals with mutation in the als gene, therefore exhibiting target-site resistance.

The aim of present investigation was to evaluate the influence of lowrates application on herbicide residues in soil and roots of sugar beet. Chemical weed control in sugar beet was applied at recommended and reduced (about 50 and 66%) doses of herbicides including substances such as: phenmedipham, desmedipham, ethofumesate, metamitron, triflusulfuron and oil adjuvant applied 4 times at 7- to 10-day intervals starting at the onset of weed emergence. Samples of soil and roots of sugar beet were taken at the day of lifting. Phenmedipham, desmedipham and ethofumesate residues were analysed using HPLC with UV-detection. Metamitron residues were analysed using GLC with ECD detection. At lifting time, in soil samples, where recommended herbicide doses were applied, the residues of separate active substance of herbicides amounted from 0.0056 to 0.0124 mg.kg-1. Sum of all detected residues of applied substances amounted 0.0323-0.0373 mg.kg-1. In sugar beet root samples, the residues amounted respectively 0.0011 to 0.0085 mg.kg-1and 0.0085-0.0224 mg.kg-1. Application of the reduced doses by about 50% influenced on a significant decrease of residues about 38-50% average. For samples, where reduction of herbicide dose amounted 66%, the decrease of residues level, in comparison with results obtained at recommended doses, was statistically significant and amounted 69-77% average. Residues of active substances determined in roots of sugar beet did not exceed EU acceptable limits.

Negatywne oddziaływanie zachwaszczenia uwidoczniło się we wszystkich latach badań, lecz szczególnie w drugim roku, kiedy wystąpiły najmniej korzystne warunki pogodowe w ciągu całego okresu wegetacyjnego. Dotyczyło to w szczególności roślin uprawianych metodą niskonakładową, w ramach której stosowano mechaniczną ochronę przeciwko chwastom. Natomiast zastosowanie chemicznej metody walki z chwastami pozwoliło zredukować ich występowanie i siłę konkurencji w stosunku do roślin wszystkich odmian uprawianych wysokonakładowym sposobem, nawet w najmniej korzystnych warunkach pogodowych panujących podczas okresu wegetacyjnego.
A three-year field experiment, carried out over 2001-2003, investigated the effect of cultivars and weed control methods on the weed infestation of pea (Pisum sativum L.) and on its yielding. The research involved low-, medium- and high-input growing technologies, including the mechanical and chemical weed control methods. The experiment involved four pea cultivars: two edible, general-use, cultivars: Rola and Agra and two fodder cultivars: Sokolik and Wiato. Analyzing the weed infestation and weed control methods and the competitiveness of cultivars towards weeds, it was found that the weed infestation had a priori a significant effect on yield components (plant density, number of pods per plant, seed weight per pod and 1000 seed weight), as well as on yielding of each cultivar researched. A negative effect of weed infestation was observed in all the research years, especially in the second year with the least favorable climatic condi tions of the entire vegetation period, which concerned especially crops grown using the low-input technology which involved mechanical weed control. However the application of the chemical weed control facilitated a weed reduction and the competitiveness towards the plants of all the cultivars grown using the high-input technology, even under the least favorable climatic conditions of the vegetation period. The analysis of the reaction of cultivars to the degree of weed infestation revealed that Rola was the most competitive cultivar towards weeds, especially under extremely unfavorable conditions.

Opis:
A special role in improving soil fertility is ascribed to green manures. Organic manuring can also influence on the quantity and quality of vegetable yield. The secondary effect of winter catch crops (VV – hairy vetch, TR – white clover, SC – rye, LM – Italian ryegrass, BRT – turnip rape) and weed control methods on the yielding, biometric parameters of ears and selected components of nutritive value in sweet corn were examined. The effects of an application of green manures were compared to the effect of farmyard manure (FYM ) – 30 t·ha-1 – and control treatment without organic manure (NOM). Two methods of weed control were used: hand weeding and a mixture of herbicides Mustang 306 SE (florasulam + 2.4 D) + Titus 25 WG (rimsulfuron). Cultivation of sweet corn after FYM and VV most beneficially affected the crop’s yield performance, ear weight, kernel weight per ear and sugars content. Ears were the longest when harvested in FYM and VV plots and NOM whereas ear fulfillment was the best in FYM and TR plots. Ear diameter was the greatest for sweet corn cultivated after FYM, LM and BRT. The highest dry matter content was determined in kernels of corn following LM and protein content after LM, VV and TR. Ascorbic acid content increased after all the catch crops compared with FYM and NOM. When weeds had been chemically controlled, corn produced larger ears which, however, had less kernel rows compared with hand weeded plants.
