Opis:
The calculation of the changing of the combustion mixture composition during the combustion process of the CH4 is presented of the paper. Correct calculation results of the mixture composition during the combustion process in combustion chambers of internal combustion engines is important to define the heat release calculation, modeling and simulation of the combustion phenomena. The paper presents results of calculations for the GriMech 3 kinetic mechanism of the methane combustion for different thermodynamic parameters and the composition of the combusted mixture. Results of the kinetic calculation of combustion process are qualitatively consistent with the data available in literature. The second purpose of research was the approximation of obtained results with the trained artificial neural network. Input data needed to approximate mole fractions of considered in the GriMech 3 mechanism combustion process chemical species consisted of 52 mole fractions of initial chemical species and temperature and pressure process. For all considered chemical species the mean square error did not exceed a value of 1-10-2 %, but the maximum error for a single value of 43 species excess even more than 100% of the value of mole fraction values taken from kinetic calculations. Single values of errors disqualify the neural network application for modeling of mole fractions of chemical species.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to compare the physical-chemical quality parameters of shallow groundwater quality in peat bogs of the Łęczna-Włodawa Lake District in the context of the occurrence of selected boreal species of plant relics: dwarf birch (Betula humilis Schrank), downy willow (Salix lapponum L.) and swamp willow (Salix myrtylloides L.). Analyzes of shallow groundwater quality parameters included physical-chemical parameters: reaction (pH), electrolytic conductivity (EC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total nitrogen (TN), ammonium nitrogen (NH4), nitrite nitrogen (NO2), nitrate nitrogen (NO3), total phosphorus (TP), phosphate (PO4), sulfate (SO2), sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) by certified laboratory tests. It was found that the natural hydrochemical specification of peat bogs is characterized by fluctuations associated with the dynamics of internal metabolism of peat ecosystems without the visible impact of anthropopressure. This is confirmed by the concentration of nutrients: TN at the study sites were within a broad range of mean values: 16.92–45.31 mg·dm–3; NH4 (0.55–0.76 mg·dm–3); NO2 (0.06–4.33 mg·dm–3); and NO3 did not exceed 0.2 mg·dm–3, and concentration of TP adopted mean values in a range of 0.22–0.42 mg·dm–3. The studied physical-chemical factors of shallow groundwater were within the habitat preferences of the studied species, but in differentiated qualitative and quantitative ways determined optimal conditions for building the population of the studied species. Particularly values of TP lower than other obtained values in a range of: 0.08–0.32 mg·dm–3; PO4 = 0.1 mg·dm–3; TN = 2.2–21.2 mg·dm–3; NH4 = 0.1–0.46 mg·dm–3; DOC = 24.6–55.9 mg·dm–3, as well as higher than average pH values in a range of: 5.34–5.95 and concentration of Ca = 5.67–28.1 mg·dm–3 and Mg = 0.56–2.41 mg·dm–3, as well as EC = 72.1–142.3 μS·cm–1 can be treated as a condition favouring proper development of the population of dwarf birch. For Salix lapponum: a reduced level of values of nitrogen fractions (TN = 3.01–18.84 mg·dm–3; NH4 = 0.1–0.41 mg·dm–3), a reduced level of values of phosphorus fractions (TP = 0.09–0.44 mg·dm–3; PO4 = 0.1–0.44 mg·dm–3), part of ions (Ca = 4.39–19.63 mg·dm–3; Mg = 0.77–3.37 mg·dm–3), pH = 5.9–6.4, EC = 124–266 μS·cm–1 and DOC = 24.1–57.5 mg·dm–3. For the equally studied Salix myrtylloides, such conditions were met by: TP = 0.1–0.41 mg·dm–3; PO4 = 0.1–0.18 mg·dm–3, DOC = 27.5–50.9 mg·dm–3, pH = 5.3–5.94 and EC = 62.2–139.3 μS·cm–1.

Opis:
At a global scale, biological invasions represent one of the most important threats to biodiversity conservation. The Carpobrotus (Aizoaceae) genus, which is native to South Africa, has been introduced into five different continents and is particularly invasive in many coastal habitats. The application of glyphosate avoids some problems associated with manually controlling Carpobrotus over large spatial scales. However, before this practice can be extended and its impact minimized, its effectiveness under different application conditions must be assessed first. Thus, glyphosate was sprayed at different concentrations (0.5, 0.4, 0.3, 0.2, 0.1, and 0.05 g/m2) on experimental plots with 100% Carpobrotus coverage to determine the minimum effective dose. Tarping was also evaluated as an alternative method for Carpobrotus management over reduced areas. Thus, four different weed-control fabric types were tested: black anti-weed fabric, sewn felt, black G-300 polyethylene, and Fijavert coconut-anti-weed matting on experimental plots with 100% Carpobrotus coverage. The obtained results showed that the minimum effective dose of glyphosate which prevents Carpobrotus regrowth in dune ecosystems was 0.4 g/m2. It was also shown that at least three months of tarping were required under winter conditions to produce complete Carpobrotus plant wilting and thus, prevent their regrowth. No significant effect on Carpobrotus growth was observed in terms of the fabric type used for the tarping tests. The presence of native species seedlings in the experimental plots after the death of the Carpobrotus plants following the application of herbicides or tarping was also monitored.

Opis:
The potential differentiations in litter chemistry among native and non-native trees are poorly understood. We compared the chemical composition of leaf litterfall of 11 exotic tree species, e.g. coniferous: Abies cephalonica, A. grandis, A. procera, Chamaecyparis pisifera, Pinus peuce, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Thuja plicata, and deciduous: Acer rubrum, A. saccharum, Betula alleghaniensis and Quercus rubra, with that of a native European conifer, Pinus sylvestris (as reference to coniferous species) anda mixture of native European Quercus robur, Carpinus betulus, Tilia cordata, T. platyphyllos and Corylus avellana leaves (as a reference mixture of deciduous species). We found significant differences among the species studied in nitrogen and carbon content in needles/leaves, C/N ratio, as well as total soluble phenolic compounds (TPh) and total nonstructural carbohydrates (TNC) content, including soluble carbohydrates and starch. However, we found no clear differentiation of exotic from native tree species in the analyzed elements and metabolites. Among the exotic coniferous tree species, P. menziesii stood out among the species studied – fallen needles of this species were characterized by relatively high TPh and TNC content. The relationships between TPh and TNC content in leaf and needle litter among tree species were similar among two consecutive years. For deciduous tree species, the tendency of higher TPh content and C/N ratio in leaves falling earlier (September; leaves of sun-type) than later (November; leaves of shade-type) was more distinct than in coniferous tree species. Generally, we cannot see any special differences in the levels or mutual quantitative relationships of the chemical compounds studied in fallen needles/leaves of exotic tree species in comparison with native tree species.

Opis:
Life cannot exist without water. Appropriate management of water, from the water’s source to its utilization, is necessary to sustain life. Aquatic weeds pose a serious threat to aquatic environments and related eco-environments. Short- and long-term planning to control aquatic weeds is extremely important. Water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms, is one of the world’s worst pests with a bad reputation as an invasive weed. In this study we are seeking the possibility of using certain chemicals with a natural background, for controlling water hyacinth since there is a delicate balance that needs to be taken into account when using herbicides in water. Five compounds, namely: acetic acid, citric acid, formic acid, and propionic acid, in three concentrations (10, 15, and 20%) were applied (i.e. as a foliar application under wire-house conditions) and compared with the use of the herbicide glyphosate (1.8 kg ∙ ha–1). All of the five compounds performed well in the control of the water hyacinth. As expected, the efficacy increased as the concentration was increased from 10 to 20%. With formic and propionic acids, the plants died earlier than when the other acids or the herbicide glyphosate, were used. Acetic acid came after formic and propionic acids in terms of efficacy. Citric acid ranked last. Formic acid/propionic acid mixtures showed superior activity in suppressing water hyacinth growth especially at the rate of (8 : 2) at the different examined concentrations (3 or 5 or 10%) compared to the formic acid/acetic acid mixtures. Using the formic acid/propionic acid mixture (8 : 2; at 3%) in the open field, provided good control and confirmed the viability of these chemicals in the effective control of water hyacinth. Eventually, these chemical treatments could be used on water for controlling water hyacinth. In the future, these chemicals could probably replace the traditional herbicides widely used in this regard. These chemicals are perceived as environmentally benign for their rapid degradation to carbon dioxide and water. For maximum efficiency thorough coverage especially in bright sunlight is essential.

Chemical composition of common wheat – Triticum aestivum ssp. vulgare Vill. Host., hard wheat – Triticum durum Desf., and spelt – Triticum aestivum ssp. spelta (L.) Thell grains was investigated. Total protein, wet gluten, fiber, ash, carbohydrates, falling number, macronutrients (phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium), and microelements (copper, iron, manganese, zinc) were determined. Also standard deviation, variability and correlation coefficients were calculated. Hard wheat and spelt lines were characterized by much higher contents of total protein, wet gluten, and falling number value than common wheat; however, the highest protein concentration and falling number was recorded in grains of hard wheat. Common wheat was distinguished by low ash content and the highest carbohydrates level. Higher percentage of macronutrients and microelements in grains of spelt and hard wheat, as compared to common wheat, confirms the usefulness of these species for foodstuff production. Among the qualitative traits studied, content of carbohydrates appeared to be the least variable (cv = 2.2%), while the highest variability (cv = 31.1%) was shown by fat content. Significant correlations for the following trait pairs were observed: protein–gluten, protein–carbohydrates, fat–ash, fat–falling number, carbohydrates– gluten, and ash–falling number.
Badano skład chemiczny ziarna pszenicy zwyczajnej – Triticum aestivum ssp. vulgare Vill. Host., pszenicy twardej – Triticum durum Desf. i orkiszu pszennego – Triticum aestivum ssp. spelta (L.) Thell. Określono zawartość białka ogólnego, glutenu mokrego, włókna, tłuszczu, popiołu, węglowodanów, liczby opadania, makroelementów (fosforu, potasu, wapnia, magnezu) i mikroelementów (miedzi, żelaza, manganu, cynku). Wyższy udział makro- i mikroelementów w ziarnie orkiszu pszennego i pszenicy twardej, w porównaniu z pszenicą zwyczajną, potwierdza dużą przydatność tych gatunków w produkcji żywności. Spośród badanych cech jakościowych zawartość węglowodanów okazała się cechą najmniej zmienną (cv = 2,2%). Największą z kolei zmiennością (cv = 31,1%) charakteryzowała się zawartość tłuszczu. Wykazano istotne korelacje dla następujących par cech: białko–gluten, białko–węglowodany, tłuszcz–popiół, tłuszcz– liczba opadania, węglowodany–gluten i popiół–liczba opadania.

The investigation carried out in the years 2006-2008 aimed at the assessment of pumpkin fruit of 12 cultivars belonging to Cucurbita maxima ('Amazonka', 'Ambar', 'Bambino', 'Karowita', 'Melonowa Zolta', 'Uchiki Kuri') and Cucurbita pepo ('Danka Polka', 'Miranda', 'Junona', 'Pyza' and 'Warszawska Makaronowa', as well as 'Jet' FI). The evaluation involved the content of carotenoids, vitamin C. starch, polyphenols, soluble solids, dry matter, total and reducing sugars, as well as nitrates and macroelements (P, K, Mg, Ca) in pumpkin fruit immediately after harvest and after 90-day storage in gravity storehouse. Pumpkin was cultivated from transplants planted to a destination site in the second decade of May. Mature pumpkin fruits were harvested in the second week of September. Cultivars of Cucurbita ma-dma featured higher content of carotenoids, vitamin C, starch, soluble solids, dry matter. total and reducing sugars than those belonging to Cucurbita pepo. The highest content of carotenoids was recorded in 'Amazonka' (18.40 mg o 100 g-1 d.m.) and 'Ambar' (15.49 mg o 100 g-1 d.m.) cvs. The richest source of starch proved to be fruits of 'Ambar' (61.5 mg o 100 g-1 d.m.), 'Amazonka'(31.3 mg o 100 g-1 d.m.) and 'Uchiki Kuri' (20.95 mg o 100 g-1 d.m.) cvs. Different levels of total phenolics in pumpkin fruit of all estimated cultivars were less yisible as far as carotenoids, vitamin C and starch contents were concerned. After 90 days of storage contents of carotenoids, vitamin C, starch, total and reducing sugars, dry matter and nitrates as well as pH value decreased, while the level of potassium, phosphorus, tnagnesium and calcium increased. There was not observed significant decrease in total phenolics content in fruits of C. maxima and C. pepo after storage.
Owoce odmian należących do dyni olbrzymiej zawierały więcej karotenoidów, witaminy C. skrobi, ekstraktu, suchej masy oraz cukrów ogółem i redukujących niż owoce dyni zwyczajnej. Największą zawartość karotenoidów odnotowano w częściach jadalnych odmian 'Amazonka' (18,40 mg o 100 g-1 d.m.), 'Ambar' (15,49 mg o 100 g-1 d.m.). Najwięcej skrobi miały owoce odmiany 'Ambar' (61.5 mg o 100 g-1 d.m.), 'Amazonka' (31,3 mg o 100 g-1 d.m.) i "Uchiki Kuri' ((20,95 mg o 100 g-1 d.m.). Różnice w zawartości polifenoli pomiędzy badanymi odmianami były mniej widoczne niż w przypadku karotenoidów, witaminy C czy skrobi. Po 90-dniowym przechowywaniu zawartość karotenoidów, witaminy C, cukrów, suchej masy i azotanów oraz wartość pH malały, podczas gdy poziom makroskładników wzrastał. Nie odnotowano znaczących zmian w zawartości polifenoli po przechowaniu.

The experiments on celery, curly kale and lettuce reported in this paper were carried out in a greenhouse, with plants grown in 2 dm3 pots filled with peat substrate. The trials were established in a completely randomized design. The aim was to determine the effect of increasing nitrogen doses (0.3, 0.6, 0.9, 1.2 g N dm-3 of substrate) on N-tot., NO3-N, concentrations of P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Mn and Cu as well as ratios between these elements in three vegetable species such as curly kale, lettuce, and celery, distinguished by different degrees of sensitivity to salinity. An increase in the content of total nitrogen and NO3-N in lettuce, curly kale and celery appeared to be parallel to the increasing doses of nitrogen, while the average total nitrogen content was similar in all the tested species, and the content of N-NO3 in kale was about five-fold lower than in lettuce and celery. The level of nitrogen fertilization influenced the content of potassium and magnesium in lettuce as well as the content of phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium in celery. The nitrogen doses significantly differentiated proportions between the nutrients in plants, mostly the K:Mg and Zn:Cu ratios. The increasing doses of nitrogen modified the content of microelements and proportions between various components in the tested plant species.

Opis:
W monokulturze kukurydzy znacznie zwiększyły swój udział Echinochloa crus galli i Chenopodium album oraz Solanum nigrum, Aethusa cynapium i Galeopsis tetrahit. Zbiorowisko chwastów w kukurydzy uprawianej w zmianowaniu charakteryzowało się większą bioróżnorodnością, a zmiany liczebności i składu gatunkowego w latach badań były niewielkie.
Maize is a crop that is characterized by a high level of herbicide consumption, due to its efficiency and fastness of chemical control performance. Cultivation of maize is more profitable than cereals. The research conducted in 2004-2007 in western Poland on weed infestation in maize showed the negative aspect of maize cultivation in monoculture. At the beginning of the study, the following weed species occurred: Echinochloa crus galli, Chenopodium album, Agropyron repens, Galium aparine, Viola arvensis, Thlaspi arvense, Capsella bursa-pastoris, Anthemis arvensis and different dicotyledonous weeds present in field experiments. Four years later, the following taxons predominated in maize monoculture: Echinochloa crus-gali, Chenopodium album and new weed species which occurred in trials: Solanum nigrum, Aethusa cynapium. Therefore, experiments were performed in the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation in Wrocław (50o58’ N; 16o56’ E), using herbicides and the following mixtures: Lumax 537,5 SE – applied preemergence, Callisto 100 SC + Milagro 040 – applied postemergence at the 3-4 leaf stage of maize, Maister 310 WG + Actirob 842 EC + Mustang 306 SE – applied postemergence in split doses, limiting weed infestation in maize monoculture crop in direct sowing variant and simplified tillage variant, in ploughing cultivation. Long-term research showed that the effectiveness of herbicides present at farming market should be improved through, for example, postemergence herbicide choice to secondary weed infestation, and the application of mixtures of sulfonylurea herbicides used at the divided fractional doses for weed infestation control at postemergence time. The system of weed control using glyphosate to overwintering species and the ones germinating before a cultivated plant and additionally, the mixture of Maister 310 WG + Actirob 842 EC + Mustang 306 SE applied postemergence in split doses for the secondary weed control, made it possible to eliminate undesired plants on that soil stand in the most efficient way and to achieve the highest grain yield.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the water environment and its properties and the vegetation of buffer and water zone of midfield ponds. The studies were based on the analysis of the concentration of Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu in water and in the plants species composition in 10 water bodies. Chemical measurements were carried out using absorption technique of atomic absorption spectrometry. In the statistical description of the research results a two-factor analysis of variance was used and basic measures of distribution were determined. In the examined field ponds 38 species of plants were observed. In the aquatic zone in which water body was not loaded with waste the number of plant species was larger than in the ponds with waste, and in the buffer zone their number was smaller. Whereas in the group of ponds of differentiated endurance of water table it was observed that in the water zone of ponds filled with water during the whole vegetation period there were fewer plant species than in the seasonal ponds. The examined water were characterized by a high variability of concentrations of analysed metals (Zn and Cu – as 1st class of water purity). A developed buffer zone of the ponds makes it possible to limit negative effects of the surface run off of mineral and organic fertilizers, but its presence often becomes a place of depositing wastes. The ponds contaminated with waste showed higher concentrations of Fe and Cu in the water in comparison with the unpolluted ponds, despite a greater variety of plants’ species within the buffer zone of the contaminated ponds. The disappearance of Antennaria dioica was caused by the level of Mn concentration in the water. Plants inhabiting the water zone of the contaminated ponds may have contributed to the reduction of Mn and Zn concentration in the water.
