Opis:
One of the most essential issue regarding work environment is identification and analysis of hazards. Hazards are defined based on measurement of frequency and number of various factors occurring at the work environment. The employer specifies harmful factors after recognizing sources of emission and work conditions, which influence levels of concentrations or intensity of the mentioned factors, or level of exposure to the mentioned factors. Tests and measurements of practically all physical and chemical factors, to which the worker at the work environment may be exposed, are carried out in thermal power plants which generate electric energy of fossil fuels (coal). The article covers identification of hazards at the thermal power plant and their analysis considering methods of their elimination.

Opis:
Temporal variations (1994–98) in nutrient distribution were analysed in the Polish sector of the Baltic Sea with reference to long-term (1979–98) fluctuations of hydrological and chemical factors. Between 1994 and 1998 the winter accumulation of phosphate declined noticeably in most of the regions with the exception of the Gulf of Gdańsk. The winter peaks of silicate were also reduced in the offshore region and in the waters along the central Polish coast, but continued to accumulate in the bays owing to riverine input. In the offshore region a decrease in the winter accumulation of nitrate was noted in the surface water layer whereas in the bays nitrate concentrations continued to increase. Large quantities of nitrate continue to accumulate in the Gulf of Gdańsk, although at a slower rate than in 1979–93.

Opis:
The objective of this study was to characterise the quality of giant pumpkin dried in different conditions as well as to determine the best combination(s) of drying conditions, based on colour and chemical composition of dried material. Samples of three pumpkin cultivars (Amazonka, Justynka- 957 and Ambar) were dried at five different temperatures (40°C, 50°C, 60°C, 70°C, 80°C) using three different drying methods (forced convection in tunnel dryer, natural convection in chamber dryer and hybrid drying which combined a tunnel drying and fluidized-bed drying). It has been shown that variability of samples resulted primarily from the redness, yellowness, lutein and β-carotene. Samples were scored based on the range of responses identified by factor analysis in order to find an optimal combination of cultivar, temperature and drying method. The three subsequent highest scores were obtained for samples of Ambar cultivar, dried using hybrid drying at 40, 60 and 80°C respectively.

Opis:
In this study, contamination of potentially toxic elements (Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn, Hg and Pb) and species dominant in the fish community of Lake Kenon – Carassius auratus gibelio (Bloch 1782) and Perca fluviatilis (Linnaeus 1758) – were investigated. Chemical elements in samples were determined by atomic emission spectrometry (iCAP-6500, Thermo Scientific, USA) and mass spectrometry (X-7, Thermo Elemental, USA). It was reported that water in Lake Kenon contained low concentrations of the studied metals. The bottom sediments are enriched with Mn, Zn, Hg and Pb. Bioaccumulation factors of chemical elements accumulated from the surrounding water for P. fluviatus and C. auratus gibelio in descending order are as follows: Zn > Pb > Hg > Cu. P. fluviatus accumulates Hg in equal measure from both water and bottom sediments. Manganese and mercury are accumulated in the muscles of C. auratus gibelio from bottom sediments. The high accumulation ratio of Zn and Hg in C. auratus gibelio was obtained from Chara sp. (24 times) and Chironomus spp. (38 times), respectively. High accumulation ratio of Zn (26 times) and Hg (29 times) in P. fluviatus was obtained from amphipods. At the same time, Hg in P. fluviatus muscles was accumulated at high level from Chironomus spp. (67 times). In this way, management decisions for mitigation practices in Lake Kenon should be focussed on for the disposal of wastewater from the ash dump contaminated with chemical elements.

Opis:
The Ścinawka River catchment is located in the middle part of the Sudetes, in the Polish-Czech border area. This multiaquifer system, forming a fissured-porous medium for groundwater, is mostly drained through its hypergenic zone. The most common hydrochemical types are Ca-Mg-HCO3 and Ca-HCO3, some addition of sulphates may occur. No substantial depth-related differences in the concentrations of most of the analyzed ions have been found. The multi-aquifer system is relatively homogenous with respect to groundwater chemistry, which indicates occurrence of strong hydraulic contacts between the individual aquifers. The observed increased concentrations of some ions (U, Th, Li) may be an effect of groundwater intrusions from the deeper parts of the multi-aquifer system. Chemical composition of the groundwater is locally modified by ion exchange processes.

Opis:
The long-term performance of a structural member is determined by its durability and deformation with time. The bending creep behaviour of modified wood was assessed experimentally over a period of 35 days (840 hours). Four chemical modification processes were used: 1,3-dimethylol-4,5-dihydroxyethyleneurea (DMDHEU), mmethylated melamine formaldehyde resin (MMF), tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and amid wax (WA). Wood stakes with 20.10.200 mm RTL dimensions of Portuguese Maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ait.) from sapwood part of the stem were used for evaluated the primary creep. Experiments were conducted at bending stresses amounting to 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 of the mean immediate wood bending strength obtained at equilibrium moisture content (EMC). Applying the same stress level (SL, 0.2), wood creep was also determined at the constant low and high moisture content. As results: Between low and medium SL (8 and 16 N/mm2), unmodified wood at indoors conditions did not show any effect in the creep factors (kc). However, at high SL (35 N/mm2) a slight increase (not significant) in the kc was found. It seems that the kc was nearly independent of the SL. In the lumen fill modification (TEOS and wax), the deposited material has not affected the creep behaviour under various SL. The cell wall modification (with DMDHEU and MMF resins) did not show any differences in the kc for low and medium SL (8 and 16 N/mm2). However, resin modification under high SL (35 N/mm2) has shown a significant reduction related to unmodified wood. Between both types of resin (DMDHEU and MMF) and levels of modification (WPG), significant effect was not found. At saturated conditions, lumen fill modification (TEOS and wax) did not show any effect on creep. In the cell wall modification (DMDHEU and MMF resin), significant reduction was recorded due to the embrittlement effect imparted by the modification (deposit of resin in the cell wall).

Opis:
The statistical principal components factor analysis have been carried out in 2002 and 2003 for groundwater and surface water of two small crystalline massifs of the Sudety Mts. [SW Poland], represented by Kamienica [Śnieżnik Massif] and Mała Bystrzyca [Bystrzyckie Mountains] river catchments. 12 chemical standardized parameters [pH, electrical conductivity, total hardness, concentrations of Mgexp.2+, SO4exp. 2–, Clexp.–, NO3exp.–, Caexp.2+, Mgexp.2+, Naexp.+, Kexp.+ and SiO2 [from 7 and 6 sampling series] have been used in the factor analysis transformation. The results indicate that in the Kamienica and Mała Bystrzyca river catchments: 1] concentrations of Clexp.– and NO3exp.– ions [10% of the chemical diversity] are controlled mainly by precipitation; 2) concentrations of SO4 2exp.–, Kexp.+ and SiO2 [from 28 to 46% of chemical diversity] are controlled by the local system of water flow [weathering cover zone]; and 3] concentrations of HCO3exp. –, Ca2+, Mgexp.2+ and Naexp.+ (20–39% of chemical diversity] are controlled by transient system of water flow [fractured stone zone]. The total mineralization and pH reaction of groundwater and surface water under study is probably also controlled by transient system of water flow. The results show the relative role of particular flow systems in the chemical composition of water. This may be used in research on resources of mountain areas.
