Opis:
This study used repeat satellite imagery and Geographic Information System analysis to assess the planform dynamics along the length of the lower Niger River Valley from Onitsha city to the coast between 1985 and 2015. The aim is to understand the altered dynamics and its plausible causes in this data-poor region. Analyses revealed that the Niger River has undergone change corresponding to enhanced instability in terms of an increased rate of erosion. In the study area, a change was observed from 3.7% of deposition in the first 10 years (1985–1995) to 3.9% of erosion in the next 10 years (1995–2005) and 4.7% of erosion in the last 10 years (2005–2015). Total erosion over the 30-year period (1985–2015) in the delta was calculated on 4.8%. The river channel has migrated toward the east in the upper and lower reaches while the mid-section of the channel is migrating towards the west. The east river bank is observed to be more unstable compared to west bank line through the study period. The maximum shifts identified were 3.35 km of deposition in 10 years (1985–1995), 3.31 km of erosion in the next 10 years (1995–2005), and another substantial erosional shift of 3.35 km in the next 10 years (2005–2015). Avulsion rates gradually moved from −42.1 m ∙ year−1 (1985–2005, segment F) to 100.2 m ∙ year−1 (1985–1995, segment D), large deposition in the first 10 years. Total avulsion rates of the delta in the last 30 years (1985–2015) has pointed on erosion (−2.2 m ∙ year−1). The altered dynamics observed would likely threaten the future of the fragile lower river system environment and raise concerns for operators with infrastructure within the Niger Delta.

Opis:
Thermo-fluid properties are required for numerical modeling of nano/micro devices. These properties are mostly obtained from the results of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Therefore, efforts have been made to develop methods for numerical evaluation of fluid properties such as pressure and velocity. One of the main challenges faced by numerical simulations is to simulate steady molecular flow in channels with non-equal inlet and outlet boundaries. Currently, periodic boundary conditions at the inlet and outlet boundaries are an inevitable condition in many steady flow molecular dynamics simulations. As a result, a nano-channel with different cross sectional areas at the inlet and outlet could not be simulated easily. Here, a method is presented to generate and control steady molecular flow in a nano-channel with different cross sectional areas at the inlet and outlet. The presented method has been applied to a converging-diverging channel, and its performance has been studied through qualitative and quantitative representation of flow properties.

Opis:
Purpose: Comparison of the computed characteristics and physiological measurement of ion transport through transmembrane proteins could be a useful method to assess the quality of protein structures. Simulations of ion transport should be detailed but also time-efficient. Methods: The most accurate method could be Molecular Dynamics (MD), which is very time-consuming, hence is not used for this purpose. The model which includes ion-ion interactions and reduces the simulation time by excluding water, protein and lipid molecules is Brownian Dynamics (BD). In this paper a new computer program for BD simulation of the ion transport is presented. We evaluate two methods for calculating the pore accessibility (round and irregular shape) and two representations of ion sizes (van der Waals diameter and one voxel). Results: Ion Move Brownian Dynamics (IMBD) was tested with two nanopores: alpha-hemolysin and potassium channel KcsA. In both cases during the simulation an ion passed through the pore in less than 32 ns. Although two types of ions were in solution (potassium and chloride), only ions which agreed with the selectivity properties of the channels passed through the pores. Conclusions: IMBD is a new tool for the ion transport modelling, which can be used in the simulations of wide and narrow pores.

Opis:
Reducing friction with specialised hull coatings or air lubrication technologies has a potential reducing energy consumption and emissions in shipping. The EU project AIRCOAT combines both by developing a passive air lubrication technology inspired by nature that is implemented on a self-adhesive foil system. Besides validating the friction reduction it is of high interest to understand the underlying mechanism that causes the reduction. Therefore, a flow channel was designed, that creates a stationary turbulent flow within a square duct allowing for non-invasive measurements by laser doppler velocimetry. The high spatial resolution of the laser device makes recording velocity profiles within the boundary layer down to the viscous sublayer possible. Determination of the wall shear stress τ enables direct comparison of different friction reduction experiments. In this paper we validate the methodology by determining the velocity profile of the flat channel wall (without coatings). We further use the results to validate a CFD model in created in OpenFOAM. We find that velocities along the longitudinal axis are generally in good agreement between numerical and experimental investigations.
