Opis:
A representative volume element (RVE) is a statistical representation of typical material properties. It should contain enough information on the microstructure thereby be sufficiently smaller than the macroscopic structural dimensions. The paper deals with the numerical calculations of the dimensions of the RVE for a two-phase material microstructure. Two and three dimensional models are taken into consideration. The structure of the samples are developed on the base of randomization of elements belonging to one of the phases. The phases volume share is 50/50%. The following series of the models are analyzed: from 10 x 10 to 100 x 100 elements for 2D samples and from 10 x 10 x 10 to 100 x 100 x 100 elements for 3D samples. The element characteristic dimension is 10 jm. The elastic behavior of the base materials (magnesium and alumina) is taken into account. The quasi-static compression tests of the developed structures are carried out with the use of LS-DYNA computer code. The results are presented as the equivalent Young modulus values and compared to the calculations based on the rule of mixtures. The stabilization of the achieved results allows to assess the dimensions of the RVE for two-phase material with random distribution.

Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono problematykę dotyczącą zastosowania nowych rozwiązań konstrukcyjnych z wykorzystaniem materiałów kompozytowych, na szeroko rozumiane potrzeby wojska. Pokrótce przedstawiono charakterystykę kompozytów i ich właściwości, wyszczególniając ich liczne zalety, a także niedostatki. Omówiono nowe konstrukcje podzespołów samolotów, śmigłowców oraz zasygnalizowano wzrost udziału kompozytów polimerowych w lotnictwie wojskowym i cywilnym. Przedstawiono zastosowanie kompozytów do ochrony żołnierza: elastyczną kamizelkę kompozytową i hełm, do ochrony przed promieniowaniem mikrofalowym, jak również egzoszkielet żołnierza ułatwiający operacje na polu działań. Podkreślono możliwości szerokiego zastosowania materiałów kompozytowych w różnych gałęziach przemysłu.
The article presents the issue of applying new design solutions from composite materials for military needs. The article also includes composites’ characteristics and properties, underlining their benefits and deficiencies. New aircraft and helicopter subassembly designs were demonstrated, and an increased use of polymer composites in civil and military aviation was mentioned. In addition, the application of composites used for the soldier’s protection in the form of elastic composite west, helmet against microwave radiation was depicted, as well as the soldier’s exoskeleton to facilitate operations on the field. Composites are future-oriented materials applied in civil and military areas due to their properties.

Opis:
A series of PLGA (poly L-lactide-co-glycolide) based composites modified with gel-derived glasses in the form of foils were obtained by solvent casting procedure. As a modifier, glass particles with different chemical compositions from the CaO–SiO2, CaO–P2O5–SiO2,and Al2O3–SiO2 systems were used. All glasses were synthesized by the sol-gel process. Evaluation of bioactive properties of obtained composites was made on the basis of surface changes occurring during contact with simulated body fluid. The changes of Ca, P and Si ions concentration in SBF after incubation of composites were also measured. The result showed that all composites with bioglasses (CaO–SiO2, CaO–P2O5–SiO2) exhibit formation of calcium phosphates layer after SBF test, however, kinetics of Ca, Si ion release and P uptake from SBF was dependent on bioglass chemical composition. The higher solubility, as well as faster consumption of phosphorus from SBF, was observed for materials from CaO–SiO2 (T1/PLGA, S1/PLGA) compared to composites with respective bioglass particles from the CaO–P2O5–SiO2(T2/PLGA, S2/PLGA). Our results showed that rate of Si and Ca release from the gel-derived glasses and P uptake from SBF are dependent on both: the concentration of respective ions in the materials and the presence of phosphates in their structure. For materials modified with gel-derived glasses from Al2O3–SiO2 system no significant surface changes during contact with SBF were observed, and it seems that their behavior in physiological solution indicate that they are bio-inert materials.

In light of recent events in the replacement and generation of human tissues, it is becoming extremely difficult to ignore the existence of bioceramics. Although hydroxyapatite and betatricalcium phosphate materials are frequently employed individually, they both lack certain qualities. As a result, combining hydroxyapatite and beta-tricalcium phosphate may result in the combination of their respective qualities. The current study aims to investigate the effect of using a novel nanostructure called silicene (silicon nanosheet-SiNS) on the mechanical properties of the composite ceramic (biphasic calcium p hosphate) at various ratios of hydroxyapatite and beta-tricalcium phosphate. The silicene has been synthesized and added at different weight percentages of 1, 3, and 5%. The results reveal that the compressive strength improved due to increasing the content of silicene. The average of increasing was between 58.6% and 142% because of the strong hexagonal structure of silicene. At the same time, the hardness of the biphasic calcium phosphate composite was enhanced by increasing the weight percentage of silicene. However, the hardness decreased when the content of silicene was more than 3% due to the presence of small cavities on the surface of the samples.

Slip casting is one of the most popular shaping method in ceramic technology which allows producing a large number of elements in small period of time. This shaping technique gives a possibility to fabricate ceramic or composite materials such as ZrO2-Ti. Ti with its properties (low density, high melting point, high-temperature strength, good corrosion resistance and others) combine with ZrO2 (high flexure strength, high compression resistance and very high KIC) can be considered for different applications as constructional and functional materials. For the preparation of such composite nanometric zirconium oxide powder stabilized by 3 mol% Y2O3 and micrometric titanium powder were used. Water-based slurries with 35, 40, 45 and 50 vol.% solid phase content were prepared with 3, 10 and 15 vol.% addition of titanium powder. Zeta potential and pH of prepared slurries were considered. The pH changes were tested as a function of Ti content. The viscosity of the prepared slurries was measured. The sedimentation tests for selected slurries were performed. The casting rate for slurry of 35% solid phase with 10 vol.% Ti was examined. These measurements showed good stability of slurries. With the increasing of the solid phase concentration the density of the green bodies increased. However, the increase of the content of Ti powder reduced the density of green body samples. For selected samples the SEM observations was carried out. Composites produced by slip casting were characterized by a homogenous distribution of Ti particles in the ZrO2 matrix.

The effect of additives on the densification behavior and mechanical properties of pure and additive (Zr, B and Mg)-added silica ceramics were investigated for their application to the matrix phase of a silica fiber reinforced silica (SiO2 /SiO2f ) composite. The additives affected the rate of densification and crystallization (or transformation) of the amorphous silica. Among the compositions, pure silica ceramics sintered at 900°C for 1h showed the maximum flexural strength. Based on the results, SiO2 /SiO2f was fabricated by a repeated vacuum-assisted infiltration method followed by the heat treatment at 900°C for 1h. The relative density of the composite was 78.2% with a flexural strength of 22.4 MPa. Fractography revealed that the composite was damaged by strong bonding at the fiber/matrix interface and the fracture of fiber.

Opis:
Owing to its properties, metallic foams can be used as insulation material. Thermal properties of cast metal-ceramic composite foams have applications in transport vehicles and can act as fire resistant and acoustic insulators of bulkheads. This paper presents basic thermal properties of cast and foamed aluminum, the values of thermal conductivity coefficient of selected gases used in foaming composites and thermal capabilities of composite foams (AlSi11/SiC). A certificate of non-combustibility test of cast aluminum-ceramic foam for marine applications was included inside the paper. The composite foam was prepared by the gas injection method, consisting in direct injection of gas into liquid metal. Foams with closed and open cells were examined. The foams were foaming with foaming gas consisting of nitrogen or air. This work is one of elements of researches connected with description of properties of composite foams. In author's other works acoustic properties of these materials will be presented.

The preliminary results of the application of open-celled glassy-carbon foam (Cof) in magnesium matrix composites processed by the powder metallurgy method were presented. For the component consolidation, compaction with vertically-torsional vibration and hot-pressing were applied. For the material characterization, the microstructure examination LM and SEM with EDS was employed and also, the porosity and microhardness were measured. An influence of the carbon foam cells’ size on the composite porosity and microhardness was revealed. Additionally, a generation of a few micrometer thin and differently shaped MgO inclusions was observed. Differences in the oxide phase amount, size and shape in the magnesium matrix measured by the quantitative metallography method in the cross-sectioned composite elements were stated. With an increase of the distance from the composite roller top, an increase of the MgO content and microhardness was noticed.

The paper presents a proprietary method of making composite cast iron (eutectic) locally reinforced with ceramics. The research included making casts with a ceramic layer, its percentage of the surface was 30%. The research included abrasive wear resistance according to ASTM G 65-00. As a result of the research it has been found that the infiltration of the molten metal into the ceramic preform mainly affects the correct production of the cast with local reinforcement. The research results also have proven that the application of a lattice ceramic insert placed in the mould is the most appropriate option, due to the even distribution of the particles in the cast and obtaining a sound cast.

Goal of the present research was to fabricate and study two-phase BiNbO4 //PVDF composites with 0-3 connectivity. Such composite consists of there-dimensionally connected polymer matrix loaded with dielectric ceramic particles. In the present case BiNbO4 powder acted as an active phase (dispersed phase) whereas polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) acted as a non-active (passive) phase (matrix). BiNbO4 //PVDF composites with the volume fraction of the ceramic phase cν =2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 16 and 20 vol. % were prepared. Average grain size of BiNbO4 powder was =1.86 μm. It was found that BiNbO4 powder exhibited orthorhombic symmetry with Pnna (52) space group and PVDF polymer powder was α-phase. Minimum of dielectric losses at room temperature were found within the frequency range Δν =103 -104 Hz. It was found that composite with cv =10% of ceramic powder exhibited lower values of dielectric permittivity.
Celem niniejszej pracy było wytworzenie i zbadanie wybranych właściwości kompozytu dwufazowego BiNbO4 //PVDF o sposobie łączenia faz 0-3. Taki kompozyt zbudowany jest z trójwymiarowo połączonej osnowy polimerowej wypełnionej dielektrycznymi cząsteczkami ceramicznymi. W badanym kompozycie proszek BiNbO4 pełnił rolę aktywnej fazy dielektrycz- nej (faza rozproszona), podczas gdy poli(fluorek winylidenu) (PVDF) pełnił rolę fazy nieaktywnej (osnowy). W toku pracy przygotowano kompozyty BiNbO4/PVDF o zawartości fazy ceramicznej cν =2, 4. 6, 8. 10. 16 i 20% i średnim rozmiarze cząsteczek dyspergowanych =1.86 μm. Stwierdzono, że ceramika BiNbO4 wykazuje symetrię rombową Pnna(52) nato- miast wykorzystany polimer krystalizował w fazie α. Badanie właściwości dielektrycznych w temperaturze pokojowej pozwoliło określić zakres częstotliwości Δν = 103 -104 Hz, którym występuje minimum strat dielektrycznych. Stwierdzono, że kompozyt zawierający cv =10% proszku BiNbO4 wykazuje najmniejsze wartości przenikalności elektrycznej.

The goal of this study is to develop a method of manufacturing porous ceramic skeletons used as semi-finished products for reinforcement of composite materials or as filters. For manufacturing skeletons, only waste materials from coal combustion (fly ashes and bottom slags) as well as rubber granules from used tires and car parts were used. These granules were a pore-forming agent that underwent thermal degradation during sintering process. The influence of sintering temperature, portion, and type of rubber granules on the porosity of developed ceramic skeletons was determined. The study of structure of base materials and the developed ceramic skeletons in a scanning electron microscope as well as their X-ray phase analysis were made. Results will allow to predict phases that can be formed on the metal-reinforcement interface during pressure infiltration.

This paper presents a method of production metal matrix composites with aluminum oxide foam covered by glassy carbon layer used as reinforcement. The glassy carbon coating was formed for decreasing of friction coefficient and reducing the wear. In first step of technology liquid glassy carbon precursor is on ceramic foam deposited, subsequently cured and carbonated at elevated temperature. In this way ceramic foam is covered with glassy carbon coating with thickness of 2-8 μm. It provides desirable amount of glassy carbon in the structure of the material. In the next step, porous spheres with carbon coating are infiltrated by liquid matrix of Al-Cu-Mg alloy. Thereby, equable distribution of glassy carbon in composite volume is achieved. Moreover, typical problems for composites reinforced by particles like sedimentation, agglomeration and clustering of particles are avoided. Tribological characteristics during friction in air versus cast iron as a counterpart were made. Produced composites with glassy carbon layer are characterised by friction coefficient between 0.08-0.20, thus meeting the typical conditions for solid lubricants.

This paper presents new solution to manufacturing Cu-Al2O3 composites with a dispersed reinforcement phase. It consists in substituting commonly used commercial alumina powder with crushed ceramic foam. Very low strength of thin-walled Al2O3 porous foams results in both their easy destruction and isolation of fragments <200 μm. The addition of the ceramic phase is 3-10 vol.%. The sintering process is performed for 30 min in a hot-press at 1050°C and 30 MPa. The aim of the presented paper is to study the effect of the volume content of the ceramic phase on the microstructure and selected physical and thermal properties of copper - alumina composites.
Artykuł przedstawia nowatorskie rozwiązanie wytwarzania kompozytów Cu-Al2O3 z rozproszoną fazą wzmacniającą. Polega ono na wykorzystaniu zamiast powszechnie stosowanego handlowego proszku tlenku glinu, rozkruszonej pianki cera- micznej. Wysoka kruchość cienkościennych, porowatych pianek Cu-Al2O3 pozwoliła na łatwe ich rozdrobnienie i wyodrębnienie frakcji o fragmentach wielkości < 200 /im. Dodatek fazy ceramicznej wynosił 3-10%obj. Proces spiekania prowadzono w temperaturze 1050°C w czasie 30 min i pod ciśnieniem 30 MPa. Celem pracy było określenie wpływu ilości dodatku fazy ceramicznej na mikrostrukturę oraz wybrane właściwości otrzymanych kompozytów.

Opis:
Zgrzewanie tarciowe to jedna z bardziej ekonomicznych metod trwałego łączenia materiałów w stanie stałym. Metoda ta umożliwia wykonywanie złączy zarówno jednoimiennych, jak i różnoimiennych w bardzo krótkim czasie. Zaletą zgrzewania tarciowego jest możliwość uzyskania złączy o wysokiej jakości. Zgrzewanie tarciowe kompozytów z metalami, stwarza nowe możliwości aplikacji z uwagi na fakt, że oba materiały posiadają różne właściwości fizyczne oraz mechaniczne. W pracy przeprowadzono próby spajania stopu aluminium 44200 (wg normy PN-EN 1706:2001) z kompozytami Al/Al2O3. W pracy przeprowadzono następujące badania złączy stop aluminium-kompozyt uzyskanych metodą zgrzewania tarciowego: mikroskopowe, twardości, mechaniczne (pomiar wytrzymałości na rozciąganie). Wykonane badania miały na celu ocenę jakości połączenia pomiędzy stopem 44200, a kompozytami na osnowie stopu aluminium wzmacnianymi fazą ceramiczną Al/Al2O3.
Friction welding is one of the most economical processes for durable joining of solid-state materials. This technique allows bonding similar and dissimilar materials in a very short time. Friction welding of metals and composites opens up new application opportunities due to the fact that these materials have different physical and mechanical properties. In the present study, 44200 aluminum alloy was friction welded to Al/Al2O3 composite. In addition, the following analyses were performed for all joints produced by friction welding: optical microscopy, microhardness measurements and tensile strength measurements. All studies were carried out to evaluate the quality of bonding between aluminum alloy and metal matrix composites reinforced with a ceramic phase of Al/Al2O3.
