The scope of the project carried out in the Kórnik Library in 2016-2019 included the set of incunabula kept in the facility. This paper sums up the works concerning this part of the book collection. The author presents new findings concerning the holdings, simultaneously indicating the need for further research on the oldest treasures of the European printing industry kept at the library established by Tytus Działyński.

Opis:
The subject of this paper is the analysis of linguistic features of the 19th- Century prayer book. The features in question distinguish the analyzed text from contemporary prayers. The differences are to a minor extent observable in the spelling, more frequently in inflection and syntax. The least differences can be observed in vocabulary which, despite being classified in Doroszewski’s dictionary as archaic, is usually preserved in modem prayers, with the exception of a number of words that are no longer in use in contemporary language. The religious language is more conservative and does not undergo changes as rapidly as the general language.

Biblioteka Uniwersytecka w Warszawie powstała w 1817 roku. Jej pierwszym dyrektorem został S. B. Linde, wybitny uczony slawista i leksykograf. Biblioteka mimo bardzo poważnego kryzysu wywołanego represjami politycznymi po upadku powstania listopadowego, kiedy skonfiskowano około 70% zbiorów, działa nieprzerwanie do dnia dzisiejszego. W ciągu swojej historii wielokrotnie zmieniała się jej afiliacja instytucjonalna i w związku z tym oficjalna nazwa, ale zachowana została ciągłość instytucjonalna. Była kolejno: Biblioteką Publiczną, związaną z Królewskim Uniwersytetem Warszawskim (1817–1834), Biblioteką Rządową (1834–1840), Biblioteką Warszawskiego Okręgu Naukowego (1840– 1862), Biblioteką Główną (1862–1871), Biblioteką Cesarskiego Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego z rosyjskim językiem wykładowym (1871–1915), następnie Biblioteką Uniwersytecką. Bogate zbiory dziewiętnastowieczne, które nawarstwiały się na przestrzeni dziejów biblioteki, spowodowały, że w roku 1999 wydzielono je i uznano za historyczne zbiory specjalne, przyjmując jako obowiązujące dla nich cezury lata 1801–1918. W tej kategorii zbiorów szczególnie wyróżnia się kolekcja literatury rosyjskiej, która w powszechnej opinii jest specjalnością BUW. W artykule zostały zaprezentowane wstępne wyniki badań, które miały na celu dokładniejsze określenie liczebności tej kolekcji. W sposób przeglądowy przedstawiono także etapy kształtowania się bogatych zbiorów rosyjskich, korygując niektóre rozpowszechnione opinie na ten temat.
The University Library in Warsaw was established in 1817, and Samuel B. Linde, an outstanding man of learning, Slavonic philologist, and lexicographer became its fi rst director. The Library, in spite of the grave crisis caused by the political repressions after the fall of the November Uprising in 1831, when 70% of its holdings were confi scated, was not closed down and continued to function, and retains its institutional continuity until today. During its history, the Library’s affi liation changed several times. The name of the Library also underwent changes: Public Library unoffi cially linked with the University of Warsaw (1817–1834); Government Library (1834–1840); Library of the Warsaw Educational District (1840–1862); Central Library (1862–1871); Library of the Imperial University of Warsaw (1871–1915); and fi nally, since 1915, the University Library in Warsaw. Nineteenth-century holdings of the University Library are particularly abundant and valuable. In 1999, in acknowledgment of their importance, books published between 1801–1918 were separated from the rest of the holdings and assigned the status of a special historical collection. Within this category, the Russian publications are considered of exceptional importance. They are widely deemed the specialisation of the University Library in Warsaw. In his article Z. Olczak presents the results of a preliminary research aimed at a more precise estimation of the number of Russian publications in the Library. He also discusses the development of these holdings in historical context, and proposes amendments to widespread erroneous believes in this respect.

"Vanity" in the Ecclesiastes according to Marcin Bielski against the background of selected 16th‑century biblical translations The article concerns a selected aspect of the translation of the Book of Ecclesiastes by Marcin Bielski and included in the Kronika wszytkiego świata (1554) and the Kronika, to jest historyja świata (1564). The meanings were compared with the ways of speaking about vanity in other 16th-century translations of the Book of Ecclesiastes (Hieronim z Wielunia, Biblia Leopolity, Biblia brzeska, Biblia nieświeska, Biblia Jakuba Wujka) and the Vulgate. The conducted analysis showed the lack of a confessional justification for the choice of the lexeme vanity in Bielski’s translation.

Artykuł recenzyjny dotyczy publikacji Anny Nosek „Co dać dziecku na gwiazdkę?” Studia nad kulturą czytelniczą i krytyką literatury dla młodych odbiorców w XIX wieku (Kraków 2021). Wskazano, że publikacja ta to potrzebny, syntetyczny opis miejsca i roli książki w pojmowaniu ludzi epoki, dokonany przez badaczkę od lat zajmującą się literaturą dla dzieci i młodzieży. Doceniono wnikliwość autorki, zwłaszcza fragmenty poświęcone ustaleniu modelu XIX-wiecznej dobrej książki dla małego odbiorcy. Uwagi krytyczne dotyczą natomiast m.in. ogólnikowości i nieostrości używanej przez badaczkę frazy „dla młodych odbiorców”.
The review article concerns the publication by Anna Nosek “Co dać dziecku na gwiazdkę?” Studia nad kulturą czytelniczą i krytyką literatury dla młodych odbiorców w XIX wieku (“What to Give a Child for Christmas?” Studies on Reading Culture and Literary Criticism for Young Readers in the 19th Century). The article indicates that this publication is necessary, concise description of the place and role of the book, made by a researcher who has been analyzing literature for children and adolescents for many years. The author’s insight was appreciated, especially the fragments describing a model of a 19th-century “good book” for children. Critical comments concern, among others, the vagueness of the prase “for young readers” used by the researcher.

The examination of such marks allows to deepen our knowledge about them.

Celem artykułu jest prześledzenie działalności Biblioteki Fundacji Wiktora hr. Baworowskiego na podstawie zapisów w „Księdze kasowej”, w której notowano bieżące wydatki biblioteki. Ten powstający głównie w XX wieku rękopis, stanowi interesujące źródło informacji o funkcjonowaniu biblioteki, gdyż wynotowano w nim szereg wydatków, które rzucają nowe światło na sposób funkcjonowania instytucji. Ponadto, analiza i zestawienie poszczególnych danych, dostarcza informacji o współpracy z najbliższym otoczeniem książnicy. Dane z opisanego rękopisu pozwalają zarysować sieć powiązań handlowych Baworovianum z księgarzami i antykwariuszami polskimi i z zachodu Europy. Tekst prezentuje także inne firmy (np. introligatornie) i instytucje (np. towarzystwa naukowe) oraz osoby, które na przestrzeni lat pojawiają się w „Księdze kasowej” jako współpracujący z biblioteką.
The article’s objective is to trace the activity of the Baworowscy Library, basing on entries in a “Cash Journal”, in which the Library’s expenses were being noted. This manuscript, created mostly in the 20 th century, constitutes an interesting source of information about the Library’s functioning, since a number of expenses which shed a new light on the Library’s work have been included there. Moreover, the analysis and juxtaposition of certain data brings information about the cooperation between the Library and its closest surrounding. Data from the manuscript described allows us to outline a network of trade links between the Baworovianum and booksellers and antiquaries from Poland and Western Europe. The text also describes other companies (e.g. binderies) and institutions (e.g. learned societies), as well as people, who throughout the years have appeared on the Journal’s pages as Library’s cooperators. Information included in this document are a trigger to the history of book culture in 19 th and 20 th century Lviv.

1890–1918 was a time of intensive development of editorial works on literary texts, continuing workshop and ideological explorations in publishing work that started in the early nineteenth century. Chief editorial tasks and objectives were defined, principles were developed and a growing number of new editions of Old Polish works were made available. Did introducing them into readership and social awareness contributed to changing the outlook of the modernist era? Did historical phenomena, national traditions and myths found in traditional Polish literary works became a component of the modernist worldview thanks to those editions? The article is an invitation to examine an important aspect of publishing movement of 1890–1918, arguing that finding an answer to the question about the place of editions of Old Polish literature in the cultural and literary life as well as intellectual and artistic profile of Polish modernism may contribute to its specificity being recognised within European culture.

Biblioteka Uniwersytecka w Poznaniu w 2017 roku nabyła wydanie dzieła Wilhelma Duranta Rationale divinorum officiorum (Nürnberg: Antonius Koberger, 19 IV 1480, 2o). Na wyklejce przedniej okładki tego inkunabułu znajduje się spis ksiąg z 1553 roku. W artykule przedstawiono losy tego woluminu (dotąd uchodził za stratę wojenną) oraz dokonano analizy spisu ksiąg. Wynika z niej, że właścicielem księgozbioru ujętego w rejestrze był Stanisław Smoła z Wolborza (pierwsza połowa XVI wieku), bakałarz sztuk i rektor szkoły przy kościele św. Szczepana w Krakowie. Do tekstu artykułu dołączono edycję treści spisu ksiąg z objaśnieniami.
In 2017 Poznań University Library purchased an edition of Wilhelm Durant’s Rationale divinorum officiorum (Nürnberg: Antonius Koberger, 19 IV 1480, 2o) The front fly-leaf of the incunabulum bears a list, drew up in 1553, of a number books. This article presents the history of this particular volume (heretoforem believed to have been lost during the war) and provides an in-depth analysis of the included list. As it can be evidenced from the register, the owner of this particular book collection was Stanisław Smoła of Wolborz (1st. half of the 16thc.), a bachelor of arts and rector of the school attached to St. Szczepan (Stephen) church in Cracow. The article is complemented with an annotated edition of the book register.

At the end of 1599, a richly illustrated book TheatrumurbiumItalicarum appeared in Venice. The author and publisher was a printer and engraver of Padua - Pietro Bertelli. According to the information provided on the front page and the dedication text, the work was donated to the bishop of Kujawy and Pomorze, Hieronim Rozrażewski (1542-1600). The following article is devoted to several key issues related to the release and influence of this publication. First, the paper focuses on the direct creators of the book: the publisher Pietro Bertelli and the identifiable creators of the various prints (Jacopo Monticolo, Francesco Bertelli). Then it presents the typology of the town depictions, their iconographic representations and direct provenance. Establishing their origins and linking them with the real influence of Bertelli's publication on the illustration material of a number of later publishing undertakings allowed for determining Theatrum's importance in the development of a modern veduta. The text also discusses the problem of the origins of the book and the Polish hierarch’s involvement in this entire undertaking.
Z końcem 1599 roku w Wenecji ukazała się bogato ilustrowana książka Theatrum urbium Italicarum. Jej autorem oraz wydawcą był padewski drukarz i rytownik – Pietro Bertelli. Zgodnie z informacjami zawartymi we frontyspisie oraz tekście dedykacyjnym dzieło to ofiarowane zostało biskupowi kujawsko-pomorskiemu Hieronimowi Rozrażewskiemu (1542-1600). Niniejszy artykuł poświęcony jest kilku zasadniczym kwestiom związanym z powstaniem i oddziaływaniem tego wydawnictwa. W pierwszym rzędzie przybliżony został krąg bezpośrednich twórców książki: wydawcy Pietra Bertellego oraz dających się zidentyfikować twórców poszczególnych rycin (Jacoppo Monticolo, Francesco Bertelli). Następnie omówiona została typologia przedstawień miast, ich pierwowzory ikonograficzne i bezpośrednia proweniencja. Wskazanie tej ostatniej w powiązaniu z udowodnieniem  realnego wpływu publikacji Bertellego na materiał ilustracyjny szeregu późniejszych przedsięwzięć wydawniczych, pozwolił określić znaczenie Theatrum w rozwoju nowożytnej książkowej weduty. Osobne omówienie znalazł w tekście problem okoliczności powstania książki oraz udział w całym przedsięwzięciu polskiego hierarchy.

Inwentarz biblioteki dominikanów wileńskich z 1. połowy XVII wieku rejestruje 506 pozycji wydawniczych. Są wśród nich druki opublikowane w XV, XVI i w niewielkiej liczbie w XVII stuleciu. Wydrukowane zostały przede wszystkim przez oficyny zagraniczne: włoskie, francuskie, niemieckie, niderlandzkie i szwajcarskie. Pod względem treściowym reprezentują wszystkie ówczesne obszary wiedzy ludzkiej, a ich liczebność w poszczególnych działach odzwierciedla zapotrzebowanie przez dominikanów wileńskich na określone piśmiennictwo, które pozwalało im właściwie wypełniać zadania wobec własnego zgromadzenia, klasztoru i otoczenia zewnętrznego.
The inventory of the Vilnius Dominican library from the first half of the 17th century records 506 publishing items. These include prints published in the 15th, 16th and a small number from the 17th century. They were printed mainly by foreign publishing houses: Italian, French, German, Dutch and Swiss. In terms of content, they represent all areas of human knowledge at the time, and their number in individual sections reflects the demand of the Dominicans of Vilnius for specific literature that allowed them to properly fulfil their tasks towards their own congregation, monastery and external environment.

The subject of this article is the chancellery and archival analysis of the alderman’s and the magistrate’s book for the town of Kórnik from 1580–1607. At present the manuscript is kept at the headquarters of the State Archives in Poznań. Based on appropriately selected literature and information contained in the book, it was possible to carry out an external and internal critique of the source. It needs to be highlighted that the manuscript has only rarely been as a historiographical archival source.

Die Verehrung des heiligen Josef stellt ein wichtiges historisches Phänomen dar, und nicht nur im für ihre Entfaltung „goldenen" 17. Jahrhundert. Anhand der im folgenden präsentierten Forschungsergebnisse wurde versucht, sowohl ein umfassenderes Bild von den im 19. Jahrhundert veröffentlichten literarischen Werken zu zeichnen als auch die kirchenbildende Funktion des Kultes des Patrons der Weltkirche in einer sehr schwierigen Zeit für die polnische Kirche zu präzisieren - denn Polen hatte damals seine staatliche Unabhängigkeit verloren. Die im Ergebnis des in Polen entfalteten gedruckten Wortes entstehende Verehrung des heiligen Josef muß im Zusammenhang der in der katholischen Kirche lebendigen gesamteuropäischen Strömungen gesehen werden, die auch Polen beeinflußten, und man muß die für das 19. Jahrhundert typischen Frömmigkeitsformen im Blick behalten. Sowohl die Tatsache, daß das erste polnische Buch über den heiligen Josef im 19. Jahrhundert erst 1842 erschienen ist, als auch die dynamische Entwicklung der verlegerischen Produktion dieser Art finden in einer periodischen Gliederung der Geschichte des inneren Lebens in diesem Jahrhundert in Polen ihre tiefere Begründung. Es müssen zwei Perioden unterschieden werden: die erste dauerte von der Dritten Teilung Polens (1795) bis zum Novemberaufstand von 1830. Sie war in der Geschichte des inneren Lebens von Regression und vom Fehlen irgendwelcher neuer Strömungen oder herausragender christlicher Persönlichkeiten gekennzeichnet. In dieser Zeit gab es einen überaus starken Mißklang zwischen der gläubigen Landbevölkerung, dem Kleinadel sowie den niedrigsten Schichten des Bürgertumseinerseits, die dem Glauben der Väter treu blieben und eine barocke, etwas theatralische Frömmigkeit vertraten, und den höheren Schichten andererseits, die sich von der Kirche abwandten und sich vom Rationalismus und den Losungen der Aufklärung beeinflussen ließen. Die zweite Periode beginnt mit dem Januarauf-stand von 1863. In der Geschichte des inneren Lebens trat eine neue Generation in Erscheinung, die mit der Vergangenheit und dem Romantismus brach und auf der Suche nach neuen Wegen zur positivistischen Arbeit fand und einen konsequenten Katholizismus anstrebte. Es sei bemerkt, daß in dieser Zeit etwa 80% der analysierten. Druckwerke entstanden sind. In dieser Zeit wurden viele neue Formen der Frömmigkeit in Polen eingeführt, wie z.B. die Septene, die Novene, die Anbetung des Allerheiligsten Sakraments -immer mit dem heiligen Josef. Die polnischen Autoren, die Lehrbücher für Andachten zur Verehrung des heiligen Josef vorbereiteten, beschränkten sich darauf, ihn lediglich als Beschützer der Kirche und als Fürsprecher in der Todesstunde zu präsentieren. Der durch das Apostolat des gedruckten Wortes entfaltete Kult des heiligen Josef war an die Mittelschichten der polnischen Gesellschaft adressiert. Er basierte auf dem volkstümlichen Katholizismus, der in hohem Grade durch paraliturgische Gottesdienste sowie die Betonung der Autorität des Papsttums und die Stärkung der Verbundenheit mit dem Heiligen Vater im Gegensatz zu den in diesem Jahrhundert starken gallikanisch-josephinischen Strömungen belebt wurde. Die aktivsten Verlagszentren befanden sich im österreichischen und im russischen Teilungsgebiet. Im österreichischen waren es 21 Druckereien, hauptsächlich in Krakau und in Lemberg, die daran interessiert waren, Bücher über den heiligen Josef zu veröffentlichen. Die ersten von ihnen begannen bereits in den vierziger Jahren mit dieser Tätigkeit. Im russischen Teilungsgebiet gab es solche Verlagszentren seit den fünfziger Jahren in Warschau und seit Mitte der siebziger Jahre auch in Kalisch. Diese Druckereien bildeten oft das übernommene Eigentum aufgelöster Orden.
