Opis:
Thomas Jefferson’s views on the contemporary world were mostly based on his own travel observations and experience. The diplomat visited Europe only once, and stayed there between 1784–1789. The major purpose of his visit was a political mission, during which he had a chance to observe France and other European countries. The present article, devoted to Thomas Jefferson’s visit to the Old Continent, describes the journeys he made to several European destinations and discusses his views and opinions on their inhabitants and culture. His correspondence, diaries and travel notes as well as Autobiography served as sources for the article. The diplomat did not publish any of his travel reports. During his five-year stay in Paris, Jefferson made three major journeys. In spring 1786 he went to England to help John Adams with business negotiations. He was received by the King in London. With some exceptions, England hardly impressed him. Another occasion to explore the European Continent was a-three-month journey to southern France and northern Italy made in spring 1787. Jefferson wanted to relax and improve his health in a warmer climate, and also to familiarise himself with the cultivation methods in southern France. Jefferson’s last European peregrination took place in spring 1788. He went to the Low Countries and the Rhineland. The purpose of the trip was to help John Adams to negotiate loans from the Dutch bankers, but the diplomat used this opportunity to make a longer journey along the Rhine to observe agriculture, tourist attractions and people’s everyday life. Leaving France in summer 1789, Thomas Jefferson could consider himself an expert on the Old Continent. The stay assured him that Europe was well ahead of the United States in almost every field, yet it lagged far behind in the government system. For this reason he believed that the future belonged to the New World.

The historical research community in Zielona Góra was took shape aft er 1945. In the town newly incorporated into Poland, historians were the fi rst scholars to undertake research activities. It was in 1971 that an academic institution, able to educate historians, was established. The early studies on the history of historiography in Zielona Góra are associated with Kazimierz Bartkiewicz (1930–2002), who since the 1980s had been working on the Polish historiography of the Enlightenment and the problems of the Oder region in Polish historiography. He was succeeded in this field by Dariusz Dolański, who studied the image of the West and the East in the Polish historiography of the 18th century. The most important works of both scholars were inspired by the historical research community of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, especially by Prof. Jerzy Topolski. A milestone in the development of historiographic studies at the University of Zielona Góra was the establishment of the Department of History of Science and Culture in 2007. Th e research projects in the Department have produced so far a number of MA theses devoted to the history of historiography and historical memory, as well as Anna Janczys’ PhD dissertation devoted to Joachim Lelewel. Moreover, as a part of the research carried out in the Department, Andrzej Gillmeister published a monograph on Tadeusz Zieliński. Gillmeister’s main research interests are ancient history and the 20th century historiography of the former.

The analysis of the cultural and settlement situation in the Upper San River basin in the Late Roman Period and the early phase of the Migration Period (timespan between phases C2 and D) is difficult due to the small database. In addition to materials from the partially researched settlement in Lesko and recently excavated (during the investment works on the bypass of Sanok) settlement in Sanok 59-60, the materials from these phases are primarily stray finds, such as metal fragments of clothing, such as buckles or coins, discovered outside the archaeological context. It is important to underline that most of the wheel-made pottery finds have a wide chronological frame and it is a rare possibility to narrow pottery dating. Despite the limited amount of data, they provide the basis for the new analysis of the archaeological material and settlement situation in this area dated roughly to the Late Roman Period and Early Migration Period. In this context, wide-scale research, which for the first time allowed observation of the extent and organization of settlements, proved to be particularly important.

Opis:
Through a wide range of sources, this study reveals the non-philosophical spread of the ideas of Immanuel Kant in the Slovak regions of Hungary. The flow of philosophical ideas can be demonstrated not only in the works of the Hungarian followers of Kant, but also in censorship sources documenting the import of Kantian texts in the 1790s. The critical debates in correspondences and published texts reveal anti-Kantian argumentations. Information about the advertisements of Kant's works and subscriptions to them also help form an idea about their popularity. Research on private albums reveals how the philosophical legacy circulated, despite bans and repressions, in non-public communication networks and how its social area extended beyond the sphere of philosophy and education.

Opis:
The Polish Lutheran Church between the years 1945-1956 was unable to gain the full confidence of its new German worshippers. This resulted in the treatment of this Church as a foreign and imposed one. When, in the course of time, the worshippers came to terms with the status quo, acceptance of the Church increased, but as a factor distinguishing them from Polish Catholics. The distance dividing them from migrant Poles, caused by national factors and historical experiences, was increased by religious differences. A significant role in this situation was played by the Small Group Movement. It did not have an organized nature, but its mental revivalist structuressurvived the period of the Second World War. An awareness of war atrocities strengthened the spirit of eschatology among some of the Small Group Movement members, which is why some of them accepted the existing political situation, regarding it as a penalty for disregarding God’s rules. Some of the Small Group Movement members, especially those who were previously in opposition to German Christians, began to co-operate with the Polish Lutheran Church, which was new to them. On the other hand, for some of the worshippers who existed in unofficial structures, there was an opportunity to fulfill their basic religious needs, which the Polish Lutheran Church was unable to offer them due to its organizational weakness. From the very beginning the key problem of organization was that caused by language, which was a throw-back to the situation in the nine-teenth century and the first years of Weimar Republic, when German was still considered to be “the Church language”. This was the reason why a significant part of the Small Group Movement met with mistrust from the Polish Lutheran Church, which for various reasons was implementing a Polonisation policy, and the open hostility of the police-administrative machinery. On the other hand, inside the Small Group Movement, there was little unity but numerous scattered initiatives, and an escalation of German national spirit became in many instances equally important, or even more important than religious matters.

Opis:
The Small Group Movement in East Prussia, in spite of some external inspiration, was an original product of the local Masurian (and Lithuanian) community, deeply embedded in it and reflecting its religious needs. Its initial radicalizing effect, however, created local distrust, but this was not characteristic of the Movement as such, but only some of its outer forms. Nevertheless, the Small Group Members, unless they denied it of their own will, remained the rightful members of their communities, and were not excluded from them. Modernization processes in the second half of the nineteenth century, marked by significant association trends, reached the community Movement as well, the expression of which was the establishment of the East Prussian Prayer Association in 1885 and other organizations originating from it. The source of these divisions were matters stemming from social tensions, general cultural changes and the desire to take up the challenge. However this Movement, remained in a large measure a bulwark of conservatism and multilinguistic conceptions of the Prussian state, the latter dating back to the period prior to 1871, although the desire to preserve old traditions (principally to maintain the Polish and Lithuanian languages as lingua sacra) did not mean resistance to the state. On the contrary, according to the criteria of the Movement, they acknowledged strictly every authority, unless it contravened common moral rules.

The article presents the results of an analysis of marking of palatal l in prints from the source database of Słownik polszczyzny XVI wieku (16th-century Polish language dictionary). The analysis takes into account the various conditions of this phenomenon: functional, frequency, contextual, textual, regional and publishing ones. The analysis shows that the rare records of the consonant l’ certified in the papers originated from the spelling of manuscripts. Most often, they appear in printed texts from the first half of the sixteenth century, mainly in the earliest texts and dictionaries, as well as in texts originating from southern Poland and southern Borderlands. Marking of palatal l in printed materials is characterised by a high degree of lexicalisation and dependence on the phonetic context and less dependent on the place of publication.

Although he was only recognized as the patron saint of Poland by the Vatican in 2002, St. Andrzej Bobola was accorded a cult follow- ing much earlier than this, and venerated as the saint protector of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He was seen as a special defender against the threat from first Tsarist Russia, then Orthodox Russia, then the Soviet Union – the Blessed’s intercession was associated with the victory of the Battle of Warsaw in 1920. For this reason, his beatification and canonization were part of political discourse. Andrzej Bobola’s relics were originally stored in the Jesuit church in Pińsk, moved to Połock after its closure, and were taken to the Hygienic Exhibition in Moscow in 1922. Recovered thanks to the Pope’s intervention in 1924, they were taken to the Il Gesù Church in Rome. By the 1920s, Polish church authorities were already making efforts to canonize Andrzej Bobola and return his relics to Poland. Several Polish cities tried to obtain the saint’s remains, including Vilnius, Warsaw, Pińsk and even Janów Poleski. The canonization, which took place on 17 April 1938, in particular the ceremonial return of the relics of St. Andrzej Bobola to Warsaw in June 1938, took the form of a great religious and patriotic demonstration. It was accompanied by numerous ceremonies in which the highest church and state authorities participated, with extensive paratheatrical scripts, as well as specially designed decorations and music composed for the occasion. The press reported these in great detail, constituting a fascinating case of an event of both great religious significance and broad political context.

Opis:
Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when Classicism had came to an end and Romanticism had just started, Jane Austen wrote her famous, fabulous and funny novels. All of them are known as sentimental novels. On the other hand, they are not only romances, but also detailed description of English society in the nineteenth century. According to Burgess, influenced the Age of Reason (Burgess 2003: 173). What is more, it is said that the nineteenth century novels replaced romances easily because they still had the general structure of the romances. Like in a romance, Austen connected the main plot with love affairs. In accordance with the statement of Burgess, her books mixed romantic and classical features (Burgess 2003: 174). This style of writing gave her the popularity of a unique writer who tried to present some a part of the English society, especially the issues connected with women`s life. Mostly she skipped political and historical events and focused on people and their everyday life and love affairs. Human dilemmas were the priority for her. Another important issue was a depiction of the character`s lives in novels. Austen mostly used comical and funny dialogs, tricky plots, and happy endings.

Smolensk in the fetters of ice. On the reorganization of the Great Napoleonic Army in November 1812 In the year 1812, Smoleńsk was to have served as a supply center for the Great Army. When deciding to retreat from the battlefield at Malojaroslavec, Napoleon was convinced that Smoleńsk was well prepared and that the Great Army would be able to spend the winter in its vicinity. Yet it turned out that the Great Army commissariat and the local Napoleonic governors were not able to adequately prepare the Smoleńsk fortress. Therefore on reaching Smoleńsk, Napoleon made the decision that the Great Army should retreat further to the west – onto the territories of the former Polish Commonwealth – Lithuania. In the course of a few days from 9–14 November, he managed to increase the size of the Great Army by around 20 thousand soldiers. When leaving Smoleńsk, Napoleon’s army had still around two hundred canons at its disposal. It had adequate supplies of food, ammunition and was to a large degree “rejuvenated”. Napoleon had attained a great feat at Smoleńsk. He had in fact saved the Great Army. Without his effort, the army’s further march would have been impossible. The reorganized Great Army was able to retreat further to the west and its regiments were ready to fend off the attacks of the enemy – that is Russians, as was proved by the heavy fighting in the battle of Krasne.

The author points out to the ancient roots of hagiography (the second century). Next to the history and the causes of the emergence of hagiography, the paper presents the development of its forms and changes in the choice of types of holiness, which could be included in such works since the late antiquity until the eleventh century. Marie Bláhová has presented readers with a wide panorama of centers and individuals distinguished in creating and rewriting hagiographic literature, noting their role at the time of birth of a given work and its subsequent dissemination. This panorama is made up of activities of both various centers and literary circles in older Europe, i.e., Empire, England, France, Italy, and in Central Europe, namely Hungary, Czech and Poland.

The writers in question came from the gentry but mostly belonged to the clergy, with diocesan priests being the most numerous. The next largest group were the Jesuits, followed by the Piarists and missionaries, and the smallest part was made up of representatives of all the other circles. The authors came from the eastern lands of the former First Polish Republic, i.e., Małopolska and Podlasie. The issues they discussed were influenced by the nature of the vocation pursued by a given order, the unification and standardization of religious education in accordance with the Catholic Enlightenment, and to a lesser extent, by foreign studies (mainly in Rome) and access to libraries. Counter-Enlightenment writers were active in large centers – Warsaw, Vilnius, Krakow, and Lviv, less often in the provinces. As many as eighty-seven of them were authors of more than two original works, and eighteen were translators of foreign works on the subject. Some authors were promoted by representatives of the magnates; others benefited from the support of the clerical hierarchy. Most, however, acted independently.

Opis:
The year 1933, which marked the 15th anniversary of Polish independence, also saw the celebrations of the 400th birthday of Stefan Batory and the 250th anniversary of the Relief of Vienna led by King Jan III Sobieski. Both events allowed for a wide campaign of pro- paganda for the Sanation movement’s updated political programme, clad in historical analogies, especially in the context of Eastern policy. For this reason, the ceremonies organized in the Borderlands, a particular lieux de mémoire associated with great kings, who were seen in official historical politics as natural harbingers of Józef Piłsudski, took on a special character. This provided an excellent opportunity for the propaganda of the Polish civilizing mission in the East and the promotion of the idea of Poland as a superpower. The main ceremonies com- memorating Stefan Batory were organized in Grodno, where the monarch died in the historic castle in 1586. These celebrations, broadcast by radio and widely reported by the press, were attended by President Ignacy Mościcki and many national and local dignitaries, ministers, senators, deputies, voivodes, bishops, generals etc. Lavish occasional decorations, saturated with specific symbolism, were set up as modern- ized late 16th-century architectural stylizations. The activities of the Grodno Castle reconstruction committee were officially inaugurated on the 350th anniversary of Batory’s death. Even more magnificent were the two-day festivities commemorating the Victory at Vienna organized in Olesko, which overshadowed the central celebrations in Kraków. The programme of the ceremony proclaimed that “a deed of European importance – by King Jan III and the then-superpower Poland – must be reflected by a programme of celebrations of its 250-year anniver- sary on a superpower scale”. An extensive open-air spectacle was organized with the participation of thousands of extras, including soldiers in historical costumes, several hundred fire brigades, scouts and aviation squadrons. Particularly spectacular was the especially arranged musical performance combined with night illuminations. These celebrations were enhanced by other accompanying events such as the Star Automobile and Motorcycle Rally and the sightseeing rally On the Trail of Sobieski. In other Borderland towns such as Tarnopol the jubilee was celebrated on a smaller scale, where a number of outdoor events were organized under the umbrella name Harvest Festival of King Jan III and the Arrival of the Austrian Emperor’s Legation with a Request for the Relief of Vienna.

The article proposes a new reading of Album biograficzne zasłużonych Polaków i Polek wieku XIX (1901–1903) [Biographic album of distinguished nineteenth-century Polish men and women (1901–1903)]. It is proven that this collection of characteristically designed biographies and an unusual collective biography is an important work of Polish humanities of the turn of the twentieth century that can be placed in relation to both Thomas Carlyle’s hero concept and Jacob Burckhardt’s postulates of the ‘anthropologisation of history’. The three selected biograms (Klaudyna Potocka’s by Aleksander Kraushar, August Hiacynt Dziarkowski’s by Józef Peszke and Adolf Pawiński’s by Jan Karol Kochanowski) are case studies allowing for the reconstruction of the dilemmas and text strategies each time specifying the biographer’s unique workshop and the techniques of uncovering it.

One of the most important functions of 18th-century occasional decorations was to communicate current political issues. The artistic setting of ceremonies related to political events can of course be analyzed as an independent entity but may also be studied as a fragment of a larger message that encompasses prints, literature and political ceremony. The present article will adopt the latter approach, and analyze the political message of the 1750s on the subject of the division of the Entail of Ostrog, resulting from the so-called “Transaction of Kolbuszowa” in 1753. This event, which had a huge impact on political rela- tions of the time, was also of key importance to the chief players of the period as well as their artistic initiatives (for example J. K. Branicki, who became the Great Crown Hetman after Józef Potocki’s death). The theme of the Entail of Ostrog can be seen in the artistic settings of ceremonies related to the activities of the Senatorial Commission, as well as in those related to two terms of the Crown Tribunal, which in 1754 and 1755 was overshadowed by the consequences of the Kolbuszowa transaction. The above-mentioned bodies acted on behalf of the entire Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth; therefore, ideas of political unity and total consensus were emphasized in the decorations. In this way, specific decisions were legitimized. Occasional decorations made reference to the Gigantomachy, understood as an internal conflict, and stressed the importance of overcoming internal enemies for the sake of state unity. Banquets were also of great importance in conveying this message, not only because participation alone was seen as a manifestation of belonging to a certain community, but also because the ideological content of the table decorations presented the political values of the guests and served as a commentary on current political issues.

town planning
19th century
20th century
Opis:
Wałbrzych, which was founded as a village, expanded to a small mining town. The rising of the coal mining industry has led to the origin of the regional mining basin. At the same time industrial region was developed. Former small town became the heart of the district. Local authorities set up efforts to increase representativeness of the city as the seat of the County. In the old town and its vicinity were located the administrative authorities buildings, banks, shops and services of the higher usability. At the same time, former villages were changed, taking the forms of workers’ settlements – suburbs of Wałbrzych. Transformation of the landscape was changing the town. Could that process, however, lead to create the metropolitan nature of the city and to maintain it? Some preserved settings and tradition decided that the success of that process was only partial.
Wałbrzych założony jako wieś, został rozbudowany jako miasteczko górnicze. Wzrost wydobycia węgla doprowadził do powstania zagłębia górniczego.

In Germany, the recording of the causes of death has had a long tradition and goes back a long time in history, but remained unsystematic and nonuniform as it was an autonomous matter of the different German states. This article pursues the question of how the cause-of-death statistics developed in Prussia, the largest territorial state of the later German Reich. It is asked how these statistics, organized by the Prussian Statistical Bureau, have been related to the nationwide health policy since the 1870s. The historical development of official statistics in Prussia reveals that it is neither self-evident which information was collected, nor the criteria according to which this was done. Rather, the data actually recorded are the result of complicated negotiation processes between different actors, not only within the statistical offices, but also between the most diverse interest groups from science, politics and the state.

Opis:
In the 18th century the rule of ratio was supposed to rebuild the world and to make an order in it. The philosophers followed many illusions then. One of them was the belief that the ideal law is almighty and it may give happiness to the mankind. The revolution was also supposed to be a great project for the mankind. Liberty, Equality, Property (by Jan Baszkiewicz) were placed on revolutionary banners. Liberty, equality, property are the most important natural laws, which were supposed to be transformed into codes. The 20th century has inherited many different ideas, also utopian – coming from the Age of Enlightenment. The starting point – as usual in the utopias – was to destroy the old order, especially legal order. Two tragic totalitarian systems tried to realize these utopias. The 20th century is called the Ravaged Century (Robert Conquest). But when the last totalitarian state in Europe fell down in the end of this century, we returned to the Enlightenment roots in penal and civil law.

Opis:
In the XXIst century, there is a debate whether an architect should practise freehand drawing. This article covers statements about both advantages and drawbacks concerning this activity. Firstly, sketching remains an universal and timeless medium in cognitive development for artists, due to its engagement with various types of deep concentration at once, such as: practical, theoretical, aesthetic or scientific attention focus. What is more, through the medium of freehand drawing from nature, an architect is introduced to experience natural and build environment, by both reason and physical presence in a setting. In addition to this, there is a strong resemblance of methods within cognitive and creative process of an architectural design. On the other hand, the concepts of artistic freedom and genius, which appeared in XXth century, seem to strongly support the idea, that there is a little or no purpose of learning, development, and practise for an artist. Apart from that, recently there happen to be a common belief that manual methods lose their importance in an era of super fast and precise technology or hyper-realistic visualizations and simulations. Freehand drawing fails to reach the standards of the temporary definition of an ideal. If other qualities of manual techniques remain unrecognised, such methods could be abandoned, lose popularity and recognition. These and other controversiesconcerning freehand drawing are presented and discussed In conclusion, to show XXth and XXIst century’s approach towards this problem several architectural studios and their methods are introduced. Among many others there are modern architects: Peter Zumthor, Le Corbusier, Louis Kahn, Alvar Aaltoand Frank Gehry, that provide numerous examples of drawings, paintings, studies and sketches from nature. Moreover they emphasize the crucial role of manual techniques within architectural design too. To summarise there is a quotation from Alvar Aalto with a remark about this topic: It is not through simple sketches and superficial similarities that they [painting, sculpture, architecture] influence each other, but through “materia”: an intellectual analysis of the chosen material.

Opis:
Censers (Latin: tribulum) are a group of antique objects that has not been yet researched well enough. The article discusses eleven modern specimens from the first half of the 17th century, in whose shape or decoration references can be seen to the forms from the medieval period. Several factors are the cause why so few censers from that time have been preserved in Poland: in the Catholic Church they were not as highly valued as vasa sacra that were used for the Eucharist itself; they decayed rapidly due to mechanical damage or contact with a high temperature; and finally they were good investment: they were melted, sold, stolen etc. The specimens in Mrzygłód, Jarogniewice and Poznań are patterned after the spherical Roman vessels from before about 1150. Their main body constitutes a support for a tower finial, with its considerable height diverging from the medieval models. About 1150 „architectonic” censers gained popularity that looked like faithful models of the Heavenly Jerusalem. The model was still used in the Gothic period, albeit it was reduced to the shape of the church. The idea that was born in the Middle Ages ordering formation of the censer on the pattern of the church lasted in the Polish goldsmithery until the middle of the 17th century, which is proven by seven vessels in the discussed group. Their finials, or the entire covers, look like spires (Zielonki, Małogoszcz, Żmigród Nowy, the Diocesan Museum in Przemyśl), or segmented cupolas with a lantern (Słupia, Licheń Stary, Graboszewo). The construction is complemented with a mixture of Gothic and modern ornaments. The censer cover from Służewo that looks like a tempietto, is the last link in the chain of the development of the architectonic mass of censers that evaluated according to the style of the changing epochs. The reason why conservative forms were used in goldsmithery for so long was the conservatism of the public. And what is more, these forms are typical of the vessels that were used for the worship of the Eucharist and relics that was denied by the Reformation. Their ideological archaism had a propaganda meaning then, proving the constancy and the many centuries of tradition of the institution of the Catholic Church. Who were the donors of the censers and why did they found them? Founded as votive offerings or as an expression of one’s private cult they manifested the prestige of the donor, irrespective of his being a clergyman or a lay person. For this reason inscriptions were engraved with his personal details, or more rarely with his initials or coat of arms only, so that they served commemorating the donor. The fact of offering the vessel to God made the person’s „chances” to be saved greater. Every time the altar was incensed the dead donor participated symbolically in the rite, and the prayer of the faithful indirectly became a prayer for him.

5th century
Opis:
During the 2016 season in Naqlun, dedicated to an array of specialist studies of material in the storeroom, the team documented one of the hermitages located in the hills west of the monastic compound. The work was necessitated by evident illicit digging which had partly destroyed the compound. The hermitage, which occupied a small valley, appears to have comprised at least three living units, furnished with rock-cut storage pits in the floor and niches in the walls. The doorways and niches bore traces of architectural rendering. The complex may be interpreted tentatively as a residential and religious complex, and it is a good example of a mid-5th century hermitage, the dating confirmed by a study of the pottery assemblage coming from it.

Many of the operational reports concerning so-called „enemy written propaganda” are still in the archives of the Cracow security forces. The most of such cases come from the late 1960s and early 1970s. The preserved materials are a testimony of the growth of the anticommunist opposition for bold actions in 1976 and later. Leaflets distribution, writing on the walls, sending anonymous letters were those spaces of freedom that were willingly cultivated by the defiant. The inscriptions were written on the walls, trains and trams, the leaflets were scattered in the streets, in the parks, dormitories, cafés, the anonymous letters were sent. The collected testimonies of the anonymous street slogans against communist government show how grand organisational problem they were for the officers of Security Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Rising social opposition soon resulted in strikes and riots in Radom and establishment of the first legal opposition

Opis:
Patronage played a tremendous role in publishing subject bibliographies after the partitions of Poland. Patronage in publishing referred mainly to financial support granted to compile or print a bibliography. The issuance was undertaken by printers, booksellers, renowned Polish patrons and authors of the bibliographies themselves. In the mid-nineteenth century individual patronage started to wane and was gradually replaced by more anonymous and collective market forces. Established in 1872, Akademia Umiejętności was ranked high among the most active institutional patrons, promoting such masterpieces as Bibliografia historii polskiej by Ludwik Finkel (Parts 1–3, 1891– 1914), Bibliografia ludoznawstwa polskiego by Franciszek Gawełek (1914) and Bibliografia słowianoznawstwa polskiego by Edmund Kołodziejczyk (1911).

Opis:
Gardens may function as specific coded messages, as texts that are written in the language of nature by means of words or pictures. In order to decipher the garden (a text- -code) correctly one has to find an appropriate key by looking for superimposed senses. The analysis of the verbal and visual representation of gardens in the Russian and European cultures at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century was based on the principal formula “The garden and texts” (verbal and visual) […]. The material illustrating the issues was chosen mainly from literary works. Those who create gardens combine professional knowledge from different fields and express themselves through various media and materials at the same time. The verbal and visual representation of the garden and its codes come from texts that differ with regard to the genre and semantics, for example from professional and theoretical writings, literature, albums, works of art, real gardens, etc. However, it is the verbal element that plays a dominant role in the interpretation of a work of art, hence frequent returns to the literal, though functionally varied, context. In the verbal discourse of the Russian and European culture at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century the garden functions at the structural level (compositional dominant, textual dominant of the pragmatic, emotional and aesthetic layer) and the semantic level (garden toponyms, genius loci, lexemes, the use of metaphors, symbolism, verbal code, etc.). The translation, representation and interpretation of the garden through words form a part of creating the model of the garden as the topos of humankind. The visual discourse conceptualizes real gardens as texts varied with regard to nationality, culture and tradition, and as a model of garden art, which becomes an inspiration for innovations concerning content and form in Russian and European literature and fine arts. In the verbal-visual discourse the garden functions at the level of aesthetics, poetics, perceptive processes and memory mechanisms.

The aim of this article is to present the scholarly activities of Professor Edward Włodarczyk (1946–2021), a renowned expert in Pomeranian history and culture, historian of the economic history and maritime policy of Prussia, on the example of 159 selected academic publications. They have been subjected to analysis by the use of selected methods of descriptive statistics and social network analysis (SNA). The attributes of bibliographic items have been examined and the links between them visualized with the use of Gephi software. The results of the research have been used to briefly present the scholarly profile of E. Włodarczyk; they also serve the organisational purpose. A catalogue of key words (phrases) has been compiled, and the characteristic features of publications, complete with their numerical development over time, publication strategies, and main and side research directions have been established. The research shows that the scholarly and publishing activity of E. Włodarczyk was subject to certain changes over time. The most intense scholarly activity occurred in the 1990s, which was accompanied by a change in the manner of publishing. The professor’s scholarly activities centred on Szczecin, Western Pomerania and the Baltic provinces of Prussia. For this reason, E. Włodarczyk preferred particular journals, and also cared about communicating research findings in German and English (17.6%). The majority of his papers concerned the economic development of sectors and branches of the economy and were related to the second half of the 19th century (until 1918), yet over time they lost in quantitative terms and importance in favour of the papers that dealt with maritime policy, regionalism, urban history, and other issues.

The article deals with the issue of Polish encyclopedism of the 18th and 19th centuries against the background of the European Baroque and Enlightenment trends. The phenomenon of the encyclopaedia by B. Chmielowski, I. Krasicki, F.S. Jezierski was analysed in the text. These were works that did not follow a specific and consistent pattern of encyclopaedic publications, were not popular and did not occupy a permanent place in Polish science and literature. Other ephemeral encyclopaedia initiatives taken into account by the author were undertaken without due patronage, and — as research has shown — were secondary and amateur publications. Some attempts, such as the Encyklopedia powszechna. Zbiór wiadomości dla wszystkich stanów of the Glücksbergs from 1839, or the Mała Polska Encyklopedia by S. Plater did not manage to achieve success. Only the creation of S. Orgelbrand’s Encyklopedia powszechna in 1859 filled a significant gap in the Polish publishing and writing “market”. The article also takes into account the statements of the creators and authors of the encyclopaedia regarding the patterns they used for creating such works, and a partial analysis of the megastructure, microstructure and publishing framework of these works.

The war seems an inappropriate element in the commentary on utopian texts. Yet it is one of the recurring motifs in fictions about Elsewhere in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the article, through famous works as well as those little known, we try to sketch the place and role of the warrior motif in the representation of fictional worlds and in the narrative construction. In the 17th century, it is only a question of the allusions and discreet mentions of the experience of the war which express the fears of the Utopians against the European conquerors. On the other hand, in the 18th century we observe the appearance of warlike episodes which are part of the storyline, which expresses the hold of the novel on the traditional model of utopia. War then becomes a necessity to accomplish a radical change undergone by the utopian community.

The famous Turkish novelist used to complain that even the inhabitants of Istanbul have forgotten the history and traditions of their city. One of his memories, called Boğaziçi Mehtapları, refers to the custom called mehtap, which was still cultivated at the end of 19th century, but has been completely forgotten forty years later. Mehtap was a kind of a trip made in special boats called kayık on waters of the Bosphorus, performed in the moonlight with accompaniment of music. A.Ş. Hisar presents all details regarding to the organizational part of mehtaps, which is really important from the historical and ethnographical point of view, but the article focuses on literary value of these memories, which created a poetic picture of Istanbul in the moonlight.

Siberia, exile, wandering, captivity – there are an experiences accompanying the another generations of Poles, who were affected by the oppressive policy of the eastern neighbor of our country – Russia (USSR). Independently from the historical forms of power that had been governed over the Neva or the Kremlin, the Polish fates in the East bring to mind most often these martyrological pages of the history of the native. In fact, the repressions suffered by many Poles from the Russian (and Soviet) state were so severe that it is difficult to make other associations. The first generation of Polish exiles in Siberia was found themselves there in the XVIIIth century after defeat of the Bar Confederation. The next, significant in terms of numbers the deportations, became a consequence of further lost XIXth century national uprisings, and in the last decades of the annexation era, they were the result of underground and revolutionary activity undertaken by later generations of Poles. Twentieth century history is an another chapter – mass repressions against Poles-citizens of the USSR in the 1930s, exiles and deportations of the inhabitants of the Second Polish Republic during World War II, or imprisonment in the camps of the „GULAG archipelago” in the post-war Stalinist period is an era of brutal dissent of the totalitarian regime with Poles. A tsar’s deportations, or even a captivity, is something completely different from the Stalinist gulags, prisons and exile. They are connected only by the geographical direction – East.

Opis:
The article discusses the artistic setting of the largest religious ceremony of the beginning of the 20th century, the coronation of the icon of Our Lady of Consolation in the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Lviv. The painting itself was considered to be one of the palladiums of the city, as in 1656, during the Swedish Deluge, the papal nuncio Vidoni first uttered the call to the “Queen of the Polish Crown” in front of this Marian image, in the presence of King Jan Kazimierz and the court. In 1904, on the occasion of the jubilee of the announcement of the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mar- ian Congress took place in Lviv, and in that same year the decision was made to create new crowns for the painting of the Mother of God and Baby Jesus. A committee, composed of representatives from the aristocracy and bourgeoisie of the city, was set up to raise the appropriate funds, and the then Archbishop of Lviv, Józef Bilczewski, was asked to perform the solemn coronation. An artistic and technical committee was also established, which included the architect Teodor Talowski (chairman), Antoni Popiel, Andrzej Romaszkan, Tadeusz Czapelski and Karol Richtmann, who made the decision to transform the altar where the painting was placed and to convert the area of the church bay into a distinct chapel. The works were led by Karol Richtmann, the altar was renovated by the painter Karol Domański, and the new bronze antependium was designed by Antoni Popiel. The bolt with the depiction of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception was made by the sculptor Piotr Wójtowicz. The icon of the Virgin Mary itself was restored by Henryk Kühn. The chapel vault was decorated with paintings by Tadeusz Popiel, and its space was separated from the rest of the church by a grid made according to a project by Alfred Zachariewicz. Antoni Popiel designed golden crowns and a new dress for the figures of the Mother of God and Baby Jesus, made by the goldsmith and jeweller Jan Wojtych. The Committee also commissioned new stained glass windows for the chapel from the Kraków workshop of Stanisław Ekielski and Antoni Tuch. The main work was completed in July 1905. On 12 February 1905, a coronation decree was issued in Rome, and Archbishop Bilczewski was appointed to perform the coronation act. On 28 April 1905, another decree was issued recognizing the antiquity and miraculousness of the painting, and the ceremony was sched- uled for 28th May. The church façade, side elevation and interior were decorated extensively, while the focal point was prepared for receiving the painting – “The Gothic golden throne with motifs from the tomb of Kazimierz the Great”. The decorations were designed by Stanisław Jasieński, a re- nowned painter and theatre decorator of the time. The streets and squares which the coronation procession went through were also adorned. The ceremony was very carefully planned and directed; it was attended by the clergy of the three Christian rites, local authorities and representatives of all social strata. When analyzing the coronation ceremonies, it is important to underline their considerable reliance on the schemes of corona- tions of Marian images which took place on Polish territory in the 18th century. The tradition of the last Marian coronation, of a painting from the Dominican Church in Lviv in 1751, was strongly referred to and accentuated in occasional prints that accompanied this solemn act. The reference to old Polish coronations can be seen in numerous occasional prints, in reporting on the course of the ceremony, as well as in the extensive de- scriptions and texts of sermons published. This ceremony had an exceptional social and national dimension, as it was the first such coronation in the former Polish lands since the loss of independence, and the most important ceremony before the outbreak of the First World War. Not without significance in this context was the underlined similarity of forms between the coronation throne and the canopy over the tombstone of Kazimierz the Great in the Kraków Cathedral, or the calling of one crown as Kazimierzowska and the other Jagiellońska. The new artistic remodeling of the Chapel of Our Lady in the Jesuit Church was a prelude to the renovation of the remaining altars in the church. The coronation ceremony and the restoration of the chapel gathered together the most important artists of the early 19th century working for the Church patronage in the capital of Galicia. The chapel designed by Teodor Talowski successfully combines an 18th -century retabulum with paintings by Tadeusz Popiel, being probably the last example of a true Baroque bel composto.

This paper presents new data related to Dositej Obradović’s stay in Italy and the travels he undertook while he was there. In the period between 1769 and 1780 Obradović visited Trieste, Venice, Padua, Ferrara, Bologna, Florence, Pistoia, Lucca, Pisa, Livorno and Messina and later described these travels in his autobiography The Life and Adventures (1783). Although he is rather sketchy in his descriptions, we nonetheless discover that he became acquainted with a number of interesting fi gures of the day and was witness to contemporary events and phenomena: he tells us, for example, about the provveditore with whom he sailed to Venice and about the Rules of Health promulgated by the Venetian Republic in connection with the plague which was then raging. He also testifi es to the diet of the Venetian navy and the order issued by Catholic authorities prohibiting Orthodox priests from other countries from performing services in Dalmatia. The canale navile, in Bologna was also the object of Obradović’s attention. This artifi cial hydraulic system was a navigable channel making it possible to sail from Venice to Bologna(!) in the past. His descriptions of the heavily travelled road between Bologna and Florence and of the earthquake in Messina which took place after his departure for Chios are also interesting historical accounts of the period.

Three African Passions from III century contains the characteristic element: autobiographical parts, which we do not find in other passions of ancient period. There are Martyrdom of Saints Perpetua and Felicity (203 c.), Martyrdom of Montanus, Lucius and their companions (259 c.) and Martyrdom of Marianus and Jacob. This all three Passions are authentic and principally autonomic of themselves, but two latest patterns of popular in Africa Passion of Perpetua and Felicity in some of elements. The autobiographical elements relates to description of the Passion as well as visions, which were experienced in prison. That latest mentioned element does not have to be understood as a influence of Montanism over this works – both this elements are given in different form and included in different way at the same work. The artistic level of descriptions is also different from the most beautiful pieces of Passion of Perpetua and Felicity to rather simple followed pieces of the work. Martyrs were really involved writing in prison and handed-down descriptions of themselves martyrdom to build future generations and give them shinning examples.

This article presents the genesis and the organizational structure of the Jewish public libraries (also referred to as secular or modern in the literature) in interwar Poland (1918-1939). The origins of these institutions date back to the 19th century and are associated with the Haskalah movement. Due to the strong opposition of the Orthodox Jews and local authorities, the majority of the first libraries were established secretly and run illegally on private premises. Against what were then the odds, progress prevailed and the libraries flourished in the interwar period. In 1937 it was estimated that there were approximately 1,000 Jewish public libraries in Poland.

Stanisław Górka (1538–1592)
16th century architecture
Opis:
Between about 1414 and 1592, the castle in Kórnik belonged to the Górka family – representatives of the Polish Crown’s power elite in the Early Modern era. In the third quarter of the 16th century, on the initiative of its then-owner, Count Stanisław Górka, the castle and its surroundings were modernised and extended. This article seeks to reconstruct and interpret the resulting residence complex, with particular focus on the castle, but also the private town, family church and hunting lodge. Some basic questions are asked concerning the new architectural solutions appearing at the time, the provenance of the formal-ideal models, and the author of the modernization design. In the adopted research method, assuming an interdisciplinary approach, the residence is seen as resultant of the investor’s needs and possibilities arising from his social, political and financial position.
