Writing an academic history of Polish art was an urgent task of art historians after World War I, when the country regained its political independence. An important and creditable achievement in that respect was a study by Michał Walicki and Juliusz Starzyński, published in 1934 as a kind of supplement to the monumental Geschichte der Kunst von der altchristlichen Zeit bis zur Gegenwart by the Marburg historian Richard Hamann, translated at that time into Polish. In 1936, the work of the Polish scholars was published again in the form of a separate book. The paper focuses on three problems that were addressed in it: the cultural and artistic ties of Poland to the West, the vernacular features of Polish art, and the presence of the “Eastern art” in Polish artistic heritage. The author examines also the question whether those issues were related to the political, social, and cultural reality of the Second Polish Republic.

W referacie przedstawiono bezpłatny kwartalnik „Amicus”, wydawany od 2015 r. do dziś w 3000 egzemplarzy przez Świętokrzyskie Centrum Onkologii w Kielcach, skierowany do pacjentów tej placówki. Redagowany jest przez dwie osoby: Joannę Chądzyńką i Izabelę Opalińską. Celem uruchomienia tej formy komunikacji jest zaznajomienie pacjentów z profilem jej działania, poszczególnymi oddziałami, profilaktyką badań klinicznych, diagnostyką, sposobami leczenia (chirurgia, radio- i chemioterapia, hormonoterapia, immunoterapia), lekarzami specjalistami, wielodyscyplinarnymi zespołami terapeutycznymi, które opracowują plany leczenia pacjentów, telepatologią ‒ czyli systemami informatycznymi w medycynie, zdrowym trybem życia i odżywiania, psychoonkologią, odbywającymi się konferencjami i sympozjami naukowymi, opieką pielęgniarską, rehabilitacją, prawami pacjentów. Jest to swoisty przyjaciel-przewodnik dla ludzi często wystraszonych diagnozą. Prezentowane są wywiady z wyleczonymi lub będącymi w trakcie leczenia znanymi ludźmi świata kultury, nauki, w tym z lekarzami medycyny, zachęcające do badań profilaktycznych oraz do optymistycznego nastawienia do leczenia. Celem głównym jest oswojenie pacjentów z lękiem przed chorobą, który często wynika z niewiedzy. Od marca 2020 r. tematy związane z pandemią COVID-19 dotyczą profilaktyki w postaci szczepień przeciwko wirusowi oraz różnych powikłań po przebytej chorobie.
The paper presents the free quarterly Amicus, published from 2015 until today in 3000 copies by the Świętokrzyskie Oncology Centre in Kielce, addressed to the patients of this facility. It is edited by two persons: Joanna Chądzyńska and Izabela Opalińska. The purpose of launching this form of communication is to familiarize patients with the profile of the clinic’s operation, its departments, clinical trial prophylaxis, diagnostics, treatment methods (surgery, radio and chemotherapy, hormone therapy, immunotherapy), specialist doctors, multidisciplinary therapeutic teams that develop treatment plans for patients, telepathology – i.e., information systems in medicine, healthy lifestyle and nutrition, psycho-oncology, scientific conferences and symposia, nursing care, rehabilitation, patients’ rights. It performs a role of the friend-guide to people who are often startled by the diagnosis. The magazine presents interviews with famous people from the cultural and scientific world who have been cured or who are undergoing treatment, including medical doctors, encouraging readers to conduct preventive examinations and to be optimistic about their treatment. The main goal is to familiarise patients with the fear of illness that often results from ignorance. Since March 2020, topics related to the COVID-19 pandemic concern preventive measures, such as vaccination against the virus, and possible complications after the disease.

The research paper focuses on the dystopian reality depicted in Suzanne Collins’s the Hunger Games trilogy. I shall primarily discuss the social and political relations established in the post-apocalyptic country – Panem, and how they affect the quotidian life. Crucial here is the clash between two realms comprising the world represented in the novels – dystopian districts and the seemingly utopian Capitol. The juxtaposition of two completely different ‘constituents’ of the country shapes the mutual relations between the Panem inhabitants – these within the districts, amongst them and between the center and the peripheries. The Hunger Games (2008), Catching Fire (2009) and Mockingjay (2010) consecutively portray the history of dystopian civilization from the entropic reality succeeding after the Dark Days, through a coincidental chain of events initiated during the 74th Hunger Games, to the ultimate armed conflict bringing hope and the promise of a new beginning. Pivotal in the oppressive world is the concept of the savior in the person of Katniss Everdeen who, initially unconsciously and unintentionally, contributes to igniting the final revolt against the dictatorial regime of President Snow. The aim of the paper is to analyze how the author represents the realm of Panem with regard to the complex relations between the center and the periphery.

The paper examines the spatial overlap between the disenfranchisement of African Americans and the performance of William Shakespeare’s plays in the United States. In America, William Shakespeare seems to function as a prelapsarian poet, one who wrote before the institutionalization of colonial slavery, and he is therefore a poet able to symbolically function as a ‘public good’ that trumps America’s past associations with slavery. Instead, the modern American performance of Shakespeare emphasizes an idealized strain of human nature: especially when Americans perform Shakespeare outdoors, we tend to imagine ourselves in a primeval woodland, a setting without a history. Therefore, his plays are often performed without controversy—and (bizarrely) on or near sites specifically tied to the enslavement or disenfranchisement of people with African ancestry. New York City’s popular outdoor Shakespeare theater, the Delacorte, is situated just south of the site of Seneca Village, an African American community displaced for the construction of Central Park; Alabama Shakespeare Festival takes place on a former plantation; the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, Virginia makes frequent use of a hotel dedicated to a Confederate general; the University of Texas’ Shakespeare at Winedale festival is performed in a barn built with supports carved by slave labor; the Oregon Shakespeare Festival takes place within a state unique for its founding laws dedicated to white supremacy. A historiographical examination of the Texas site reveals how the process of erasure can occur within a ‘progressive’ context, while a survey of Shakespearean performance sites in New York, Alabama, Virginia, and Oregon shows the strength of the unexpected connection between the performance of Shakespeare in America and the subjugation of Black persons, and it raises questions about the unique and utopian assumptions of Shakespearean performance in the United States.

The article is devoted to perceptions of life and death by men at war. This study is based on correspondence, letters and diaries of Soviet Jews, as soldiers of the Red Army during WWII, which were recently collected in the archives of the Diaspora Research Centre at Tel Aviv University (2012-2017) and now, for the first time, are being used for academic purposes. Analysing this correspondence, the author seeks an answer to the question, why did Jews seek conscription in the army? Was this a manifestation of Soviet patriotism or a desire to protect their families, parents, wives, and girlfriends? How did Jews feel in the Red Army among comrades-in-arms of other nationalities? The article describes how they fought, and what helped soldiers to survive – the belief not to be killed; combat experience; skillful handling of weapons and the art of war; accident, or fate. It concludes that the health of a whole generation of people who survived the war was undermined not only by hunger, overwork, lack of sleep, exhaustion, and disease but also by mental suffering. However, those who survived to victory learned to value life in a way that could not be done by those who did not go to war and were not familiar with death.
Artykuł poświęcony jest postrzeganiu życia i śmierci przez mężczyzn na wojnie. Niniejsze opracowanie opiera się na korespondencji, listach i pamiętnikach sowieckich Żydów, jako żołnierzy Armii Czerwonej w czasie II wojny światowej, które zostały niedawno zebrane w archiwach Centrum Badań Diaspory na Uniwersytecie w Tel Awiwie (2012-2017), a teraz, po raz pierwszy, są wykorzystywane do celów akademickich. Analizując te korespondencje, autor szuka odpowiedzi na pytanie, dlaczego Żydzi ubiegali się o pobór do wojska? Czy był to przejaw sowieckiego patriotyzmu, czy chęć ochrony swoich rodzin, rodziców, żon i partnerek? Jak Żydzi czuli się w Armii Czerwonej wśród towarzyszy broni innych narodowości? Artykuł opisuje, jak walczyli i co pomogło żołnierzom przetrwać – wiara, by nie zostać zabitym; doświadczenie bojowe; umiejętne posługiwanie się bronią i sztuką wojenną; wypadek lub los. Wynika z niej, że zdrowie całego pokolenia ludzi, którzy przeżyli wojnę, było nadszarpnięte nie tylko głodem, przepracowaniem, brakiem snu, wyczerpaniem i chorobami, ale także cierpieniem psychicznym. W Archiwum Centrum Dokumentacji Zsyłek, Wypędzeń i Przesiedleń Uniwersytetu Pedagogicznego w Krakowie gromadzone są zbiory związane z szeroko pojętymi przymusowymi migracjami obywateli polskich. Zbiory te w większości nie mają charakteru instytucjonalnego, ale są związane z losami konkretnych osób lub rodzin, które doświadczyły zsyłek, wypędzeń i przesiedleń. Znaczna część zbiorów dotyczy polskich Sybiraków. Cennym i wartościowym materiałem do badań ich losów są zgromadzone w archiwum źródła epistolarne (które ze względu na zewnętrzną formę można podzielić na trzy grupy: listy, kartki pocztowe i grypsy). Przede wszystkim są one „materiałem dowodowym” i swego rodzaju potwierdzeniem, że konkretne osoby zostały wywiezione do Związku Sowieckiego. Ponadto umożliwiają prześledzenie drogi, którą przebyli Sybiracy oraz poznanie ich losów w różnych okresach czasu i miejscach - od okresu przedwojennego i życia na Kresach II RP, przez pobyt na zesłaniu, opuszczenie Związku Sowieckiego, życie w polskich osiedlach w Afryce, Indiach, w Nowej Zelandii, przyjazd i życie w Wielkiej Brytanii, czy Polsce. Co więcej, dają informacje o realiach życia codziennego, warunkach bytowych, stosunkach społecznych np. w przedwojennej Polsce, na zesłaniu w ZSRS lub w Afryce czy Indiach w latach czterdziestych XX w. W końcu mogą stanowić przyczynek do analizowania postaw i zachowań, które prezentowali polscy zesłańcy w kryzysowych sytuacjach.
The Archive of the Centre for Documentation of Deportations, Expulsions and Resettlement of the Pedagogical University of Kraków collects the records concerning the broadly defined forced migrations of the Polish citizens. Most of these records do not have an institutional character but are rather linked to particular individuals or families affected by the deportations, expulsions and resettlements. The largest part of the records concerns the so-called Polish 'Sybiraks', or deportees to Siberia, including the epistolary materials, which, based on their external form, can be divided into three groups: letters, postcards and secret messages smuggled in or out of prisons. In the first place, these sources are the evidence and confirmation that particular individuals were deported to the Soviet Union. Furthermore, they allow us to trace the way the Sybiraks moved, and to reveal their fortunes at different times and places: from the interwar period and life at the 'Kresy' (Eastern Borderlands) of the Second Polish Republic, through the exile in the Soviet Union, their rescue and life at the Polish settlements in Africa, India and New Zealand, to the arrival and life in the United Kingdom or Poland. In addition, these records provide us with some information on the realities of their everyday life, conditions of existence and social relations in the different settings. Lastly, the sources might contribute to the analysis of the attitudes and behaviour of the Polish deportees in emergency situations.

Stała się miejscem spotkania blisko 400 osób z 30 państw całego świata zainteresowanych tematyką stacji kolejowych. Partnerem medialnym konferencji był w tym roku miesięcznik Technika Transportu Szynowego.

First, we give a method for finding polynomial particular solutions and next we characterize a class of integrable systems which have a null divergence factor given by a quadratic polynomial in the variable $(x^2+y^2)^{s/2-1}$ with coefficients being functions of tan^{−1}(y/x).

Face plays significant role in social communication. This is a 'window' to human personality, emotions and thoughts. Due to this, face is a subject of study in many areas of science such as psychology, behavioral science, medicine and computer science etc. In this paper, a comparative study is suggested between CS-LBP/SVM and CS-LBP/PCA. These algorithms are used in emotive facial expression recognition. Finally, a comparison is shown between PCA & SVM in terms of Dimension Reduction. The proposed system uses grayscale frontal face images of a Japanese female to classify six basic emotions namely happiness, sadness, disgust, fear, surprise and anger.

A new linear Support Vector Machine algorithm and solver are presented. The algorithm is in a twofold way well-suited for problems with a large number of training examples. First, unlike many optimization algorithms, it does not simultaneously keep all the examples in RAM and thus does not exhaust the memory (moreover, it smartly passes through disk files storing the data: two mechanisms reduce the computation time by disregarding some input data without a loss in solution quality). Second, it uses the analytical center cutting plane scheme, appearing as more efficient for hard parameter settings than the Kelley's scheme used in other solvers, like SVM_perf. The experiments with both real-life and artificial examples are described. In one of them the solver proved to be capable of solving a problem with one billion training examples. A critical analysis of the complexity of SVM_perf is given.

This article raises the issue of designing and adapting correctional facilities to the new perception of prisoners as well as comprehension of punishment. For research purposes, several European prisons which came into service over recent years were selected. A study of such facilities revealed design solutions that may significantly affect the process of rehabilitation for inmates and make such buildings an accepted part of society.
Artykuł porusza kwestię projektowania i dostosowania obiektów penitencjarnych do współczesnego postrzegania więźniów oraz rozumienia idei kary więziennej. Na potrzeby badań wybrano i przeanalizowano kilka europejskich obiektów penitencjarnych, które w ostatnich latach zostały oddane do użytku. Omówione przykłady pozwoliły na odnalezienie rozwiązań projektowych mogących istotnie wpłynąć na proces rehabilitacji osadzonych, a także na „oswojenie” tych obiektów wśród społeczeństwa.

In the paper there are investigated some properties of Lie algebras, the construction which has a wide range of applications like computer sciences (especially to computer visions), geometry or physics, for example. We concentrate on the semidirect sum of algebras and there are extended some theoretic designs as conditions to be a center, a homomorphism or a derivative. The Killing form of the semidirect sum where the second component is an ideal of the first one is considered as well.

Opis:
This paper proposes a method to numerically study viscous incompressible two-dimensional steady flow in a driven square cavity with heat and concentration sources placed on its side wall. The method proposed here is based on streamfunction-vorticity (Ψ-ξ) formulation. We have modified this formulation in such a way that it suits to solve the continuity, x and y-momentum, energy and mass transfer equations which are the governing equations of the problem under investigation in this study. No-slip and slip wall boundary conditions for velocity, temperature and concentration are defined on walls of a driven square cavity. In order to numerically compute the streamfunction Ψ, vorticityfunction ξ , temperature θ, concentration C and pressure P at different low, moderate and high Reynolds numbers, a general algorithm was proposed. The sequence of steps involved in this general algorithm are executed in a computer code, developed and run in a C compiler. We propose that, with the help of this code, one can easily compute the numerical solutions of the flow variables such as velocity, pressure, temperature, concentration, streamfunction, vorticityfunction and thereby depict and analyze streamlines, vortex lines, isotherms and isobars, in the driven square cavity for low, moderate and high Reynolds numbers. We have chosen suitable Prandtl and Schmidt numbers that enables us to define the average Nusselt and Sherwood numbers to study the heat ad mass transfer rates from the left wall of the cavity. The stability criterion of the numerical method used for solving the Poisson, vorticity transportation, energy and mass transfer has been given. Based on this criterion, we ought to choose appropriate time and space steps in numerical computations and thereby, we may obtain the desired accurate numerical solutions. The nature of the steady state solutions of the flow variables along the horizontal and vertical lines through the geometric center of the square cavity has been discussed and analyzed. To check the validity of the computer code used and corresponding numerical solutions of the flow variables obtained from this study, we have to compare these with established steady state solutions existing in the literature and they have to be found in good agreement.

Providing a robotic-assisted service in scenarios involving multiple Unmanned Vehicles (UVs) in possible beyond-visual-Line-Of-Sight (LoS) operations, safety and security are critical concerns. We develop a web-oriented, human-in-the-loop infrastructure to explore how the service provider can secure their system, enforce instant access control over dynamic operator-robot connections, and ensure the integrity, availability, and traceability of communicated data. Our proposed minimal viable solution requires an authentication server to verify user identity, a back server with a database to handle user requests and state-transition events, and a RabbitMQ (RMQ) server to trace the origin of data.
