Opis:
An extensively used fluoroquinolone antibiotic ciprofloxacin shows a broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative strains. It works mainly by the inhibition of DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV which results in impaired DNA replication leading towards microbial cell death. Eryptosis is an alternative term used for suicidal erythrocyte death. In current study, eryptotic effect of ciprofloxacin was investigated by exposing erythrocytes for 48 hours to the different concentrations (45-90µM) of ciprofloxacin. The experimental work related to the investigation of eryptosis was done by cell size measurement and confirmation of calcium role in membrane blebbing. As a possible mechanism of eryptosis, oxidative stress induced by ciprofloxacin was determined by catalase, glutathion peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities measurement. Similarly, necrotic effect of ciprofloxacin was also illustrated by hemolysis measurement. Results of our study revealed that the therapeutical doses of ciprofloxacin may induce oxidative stress by significant decrease in superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities as well as induce eryptosis, featured by erythrocytes membrane blebbing and hemolysis.

Numerical investigation of methane-oxygen detonation parameters was conducted with an OpenFoam code. Custom solver ddtFoam made especially for detonation problems was made use of. It uses the HLLC scheme to resolve the discontinuities and the subgridscale model to improve results on coarse meshes. Combustion model is based on progress variable equation, which contains two source terms. The first is the deflagrative source term and is modelled using the Weller correlation. The second is the detonative source term and it accounts for autoignition effects. Range of analysed gaseous mixture compositions was 20, 33 and 40% of methane in oxygen. The 2D calculation geometry was a 9 m long pipe with diameter 0.17 m. The mesh consisted of 382 500 hexahedral cells with the dimensions of 2x2 mm. Experimental results such as pressure profiles and detonation velocities are presented. Simulations were performed using LES turbulence model (k-equation-eddy-viscosity model) and compared with experimental data. Various dynamic parameters, like for example reaction lengths for methane-oxygen detonations, are estimated from the steady ZND analyses conducted in Cantera and SDToolbox libraries and based on GRI 3.0 kinetic mechanism of methane combustion. These lengths were then used in empirical formulas to obtain the characteristic cell sizes and assessed against experimental data.

The effect of optimal and stress temperatures on the growth kinetics of the Phaeodactylum tricornutum CCAP/1055/1 strain (a model diatom with a known genome sequence) in batch cultures was examined. The analysis of the obtained results showed two phases of culture growth. There were significant positive correlations between OD increase of chlorophyll a chlorophyll c and protein concentration at different temperatures. The Fv/Fm parameter achieved a maximum level on the 6th or 7th day and then decreased to the values registered on the first day of observation. Genetic material undergoes gradual degradation 10 days after inoculation. The size of the cells was invariable.

Opis:
Digital terrain models, witch describes terrain surface in form z=z(x,y) are given mainly as grid models. The data for these models could be captured from topographic maps in any digitising process. In this case the grid cell size is determined through the contour interval and geometric characteristic of the terrain. A method for the optimum grid cell size estimation, witch save a complete as well as non-redundant data capture is presented. The method is based on the stochastic terrain model. The terrain geometric characteristic within this model is the variance of terrain inclination, witch can be estimated using the measured length of contour lines at the different height levels. Results of the grid cell size estimation for several regions of Poland and hints for user are given.

Phytoplankton samples collected from the Northern Indian Ocean (Bay of Bengal, northern Arabian Sea, and Dona Paula Bay Goa, west coast of India), were utilized to quantify changes in cell size, cell volume and carbon per cell of diatoms and dinoflagellates. The dataset from the Bay of Bengal also provides inter- and intra-annual variations (April 2008 to March 2010). The variations in cell size and volume were large in regions influenced by the riverine influx or terrigenous inputs. An interregional comparison of commonly available forms (8 species) points out that cell volumes are highest in the North Atlantic and lowest in the Mediterranean. The information provided will be useful in estimation of carbon biomass and biogeochemical studies.

Six seedling hypocotyl anatomical characters of sugar beet diploid lines and triploid hybrids were measured. Root yield and sugar content of these lines and hybrids were evaluated in replicated field trials. Some of the studied hypocotyl characters: the diameter of the central core, the diameter of parenchymatic cells outside the central core and the width of xylem, correlated negatively with sugar content and positively with root yield. This suggests that these parameters can be used in preliminary selection of sugar-beet breeding material. Introducing such criteria into the breeding process could speed up the selection and reduce the number of expensive field trials.

Opis:
Determination of the flotation kinetic is crucial for optimization, simulation, and plant design for flotation processes. Even though there are many studies carried out to clarify the kinetic properties of the conventional flotation cells, there is not enough detailed study about the Jameson cell which is used more than 300 plants but no application in Turkey yet. One of the most important parameters affects the kinetic of flotation is a frother. The effects of common frothers on the kinetic of Jameson cell can be crucial due to the possible further application of the cell in European and Turkish flotation industries. The present study was performed out to reveal the kinetic properties of the Jameson cell by using both pure quartz and coal particles. Besides, the effects of three different types of frothers on the kinetic of the Jameson cell were investigated for various particles sizes. According to the results, aliphatic alcohol type frother (MIBC) provided higher recovery for fine particles, while polypropylene glycol type frother (AF65) gave a better ability to float medium and coarse size particles. Additionally, the results show that the Jameson cell was four times faster than the mechanical cell for medium size while the ratio was three times for coarse particles. Lastly AF65 can be used for flotation of coarse particles in the Jameson cell while MIBC can be preferred for fines.

Opis:
Physical enrichment technologies can be used worldwide in various coal washing plants to enrich up to 500 μm particle size. Conversely, coals smaller than this are discarded as waste, causing storage and environmental issues. In this regard, studies on coal below 500 μm in Turkey have recently acquired attraction. The Jameson flotation cell and flotation column, which have many uses worldwide but are not used throughout the plant in Turkey, were used to investigate the separation possibilities of coals below 500 μm. In the study, the flotation column and Jameson cell performances for three different particle sizes (-500+300, -300+212 and -212+106 μm) were compared. For the first time, both machines operated in a negative bias condition. In addition, the flotation kinetics of the machines were modelled with some critical operating parameters. Models illustrating the main and multiple effects of the parameters were developed using the data derived from the experimental results, and the models were statistically significant at the 95% confidence level. In the experiments performed with both flotation machines, the flotation rate increases with the decrease in particle size in general. According to the results, the velocity increase in the Jameson cell was 0.0050-0.0075 min-1 compared to the flotation column in the experiments performed in the size range of -500+300 μm, and the flotation rate constant increased approximately twice. In the size range of -212+106 μm, the difference became larger, and the flotation rate of the Jameson cell increased up to six times with a difference of 0.0450-0.0500 min-1.

Opis:
In the present paper we present the approach for modeling of the elastic behavior of open-cell metallic foams concerning non-uniform pore size distribution. This approach combines design of foam structures and numerical simulations of compression tests using finite element method (FEM). In the design stage, Laguerre-Voronoi tessellations (LVT) were performed on several sets of packed spheres with defined variation of radii, bringing about a set of foam structures with porosity ranging from 74 to 98% and different pore size variation quantified by the coefficient of pore volume variation, CV(V), from 0.5 to 2.1. Each structure was numerically subjected to uni-axial compression test along three directions within the elastic region. Basing on the numerical response, the effective Young’s modulus, Eeff, was calculated for each structure. It is shown that the Eeff is not only dependent on the porosity but also on the pore size variation.

Opis:
The number of different cell types (NCT) characterizing an organism is often used to quantify organismic complexity. This method results in the tautology that more complex organisms have a larger number of different kinds of cells, and that organisms with more different kinds of cells are more complex. This circular reasoning can be avoided (and simultaneously tested) when NCT is plotted against different measures of organismic information content (e.g., genome or proteome size). This approach is illustrated by plotting the NCT of representative diatoms, green and brown algae, land plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates against data for genome size (number of base-pairs), proteome size (number of amino acids), and proteome functional versatility (number of intrinsically disordered protein domains or residues). Statistical analyses of these data indicate that increases in NCT fail to keep pace with increases in genome size, but exceed a one-to-one scaling relationship with increasing proteome size and with increasing numbers of intrinsically disordered protein residues. We interpret these trends to indicate that comparatively small increases in proteome (and not genome size) are associated with disproportionate increases in NCT, and that proteins with intrinsically disordered domains enhance cell type diversity and thus contribute to the evolution of complex multicellularity.

Opis:
In this study, a laser diffraction technique (LDT) was used to measure size distribution of bubbles generated in a two-phase system in a laboratory mechanical flotation cell. In LDT, a laser light beam passed through the bubbles inside the measurement cell and the scattered light was recorded by detectors. In order to show the effectiveness of LDT, an image analysis technique (IAT) was applied in parallel to measure the size of bubbles. To determine the bubble size by IAT, around 200 images were taken in each test. In addition, the important operating parameters of the mechanical flotation cell affecting the bubble size distribution, including the impeller speed, aeration rate and frother concentration, were investigated. The response parameter in this study was Db(50) which represent the size of bubble at which there is 50% of the distribution. The results of this study showed that the LDT and IAT techniques were in a good agreement when Db(50) was in the range of -800+400 μm and there was a discrepancy for Db(50) in the range of -400+100 μm. Furthermore, Db(50) decreased from 727 to 284 μm when impeller speed increased from 700 to 1200 rpm. Additionally, an increase in the aeration rate from 1 dm3/min to 2.5 dm3/min led to a rise in Db(50) from 418 to 456 μm. Finally, increasing the frother concentration from 10 to 60 ppm reduced the Db(50) from 704 to 387 μm.
