The purpose of this paper is not to provide an overall picture of care ethics, but, rather, to reflect upon the concept of care, which has gained significance in particular scientific contexts. Undoubtedly, the importance of the subject of care represents a challenge on the level of fundamental philosophical positions and a diversified look into the occurring forms of the psychological and social suffering, dependency, and vulnerability. I will shed light on tenets that are considered central to the care ethics and that have led to the setting up of the relationship between care and democracy. By introducing the basic aspects of Carol Gilligan’s and Joan Tronto’s theories, I will emphasize their vocation to be politically relevant. A discussion on the relationship between care and justice on the one hand, and needs and rights on the other, will follow. Can hearing voices of care make democracy more just? How can care ethics provide a concrete support for democracy? On the political level, care ethics builds on the assumptions of the necessary relatedness and equality between individuals who are decisive in the light of the welfare state perspective. Upon closer examination, one may see that the setting up of these relationships is not new to the liberal perspective. Liberalism is historically rooted in the fundamental interconnection between freedom and equality. Virtues such as care and meekness can be formulated in the language of politics, but they still remain unpolitical. On the one hand, engaging in a critical reflection upon such virtues might be an indispensable measuring instrument for distinguishing a good democracy from a bad one. On the other hand, care ethics does not prove to be a real alternative to the ethics of justice. In this regard, care ethics seems to show its feet of clay.

 In this essay I want to concentrate on observers’ baseline assumptions on how we should be, or should have become in order to be accounted as morally ‘good.’ I will point out the significance for adult children who decided to not care for their elder parents. In three selected studies I show that observers, in trying to explain the decisions of others, or their moral development, respectively moral standing, misjudge or ignore their own implicit baseline assumptions. These assumptions are symptomatic of an implicit belief in all of us that wishes to see that ’good begets good’ for most of us, and infers, thereafter, that ‘bad begets bad’ for some who would show ‘no good.’ It is this implicit belief that guides the observers to make assumptions about the morally doubtful upbringing of a person, or their negative behavior that they wish to explain by flaws in the person’s personality. This biased belief says “it is this way, and only this way”, but, in fact, one cannot be certain about it. The baseline assumptions that observers bring along are basically the biased observer’s points of view which can be explained with the ultimate attribution error.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest próba ujęcia etyki troski jako intrygującego dla filozofii polityki metanarzędzia oraz zwrócenie uwagi na jej wkład w rozumienie filozoficznych aspektów funkcjonowania wspólnoty politycznej we współczesnym dyskursie. Struktura koncepcyjna prezentowanych treści opiera się na przyjęciu analogii między myśleniem a postrzeganiem rzeczywistości za pomocą metafory camera obscura. Wykorzystanie dosłownej i metaforycznej wykładni tego wyrażenia otwiera możliwość usytuowania dyskursu kobiet, organizowanego zwykle w oparciu o kategorię miejsca, wokół osi widzialne – niewidzialne, z podkreśleniem wagi tego, co ukryte. To, co niewidzialne (prywatne) umożliwia to, co widzialne i publiczne, warunkuje je i wspiera. Etyka troski pokazuje, jak powszechnym zjawiskiem jest współzależność, którą nie tyle trzeba znieść poprzez upaństwowienie, co wprowadzić w obszar debaty filozofii polityki jako rewers tego, co publiczne i wymaga nie tyle upaństwowienia, co dowartościowania. Punktem wyjścia dla prowadzonych rozważań są uwagi Hannah Arendt, Alasdaira MacIntyre’a oraz amerykańskiej feministki Evy Feder Kittay.
The aim of this article is to propose care ethics as an intriguing metatheoretical tool for political philosophy as well as to draw attention to its potential for understanding philosophical aspects of the political community in the contemporary discourse. The article’s main structure relies on the analogy made between thought and reality perception through the metaphor of camera obscura. The use of its literal and metaphorical meaning gives way to a new configuration of women discourse, typically centered on the category of place, on visible – invisible distinction, with an emphasis on the unveiled. The invisible (private) makes possible the visible and public, gives the condition for and fosters it. Care ethics explains how interdependence is a common phenomenon which should be not overcome by making it institutional but rather by introducing into the debate in political philosophy. Interdependence is a reverse of the public and should be appreciated as such. The article’s starting point are considerations of Hannah Arendt, Alasdaira MacIntyre and the American feminist Eva Feder Kittay.

The article provides an empirical analysis of a relationship between ethical orientations and educational self-efficacy. Ethical orientations are defined in the theoretical system of K. Gilligan, whereas self-efficacy is viewed through the social-cognitive theory. The results of the analysis of variance demonstrate the existence of statistically significant differences in self-efficacy between teachers who prefer the ethics of justice and those who prefer the ethics of care, in favour of the former. However, the Eta coefficient shows that the relationship strength is not very large. In conclusion of the result interpretation we explain what our research explicates and what lies beyond its capacity.

Celem artykułu jest refleksja nad troską jako kategorią teoretyczną w pedagogice, etycznym wymiarem pracy emocjonalnej wpisanej w relacje opieki i spoiwem więzi społecznych. Autorki dokonują przeglądu idei troski w teoriach uniwersalistycznej etyki zasad, w etologii i psychologii zwierząt, kontekstach genderowych, posthumanistycznych i nieantropocentrycznych. Przegląd wybranych koncepcji troski przekonuje o dużej złożoności tego pojęcia i jego zróżnicowanych, ambiwalentnych, znaczeniach. Troska związana jest z refleksją o świecie, kulturze i społeczeństwie – towarzyszy refleksji nad słabością i kruchością, wpisaną w fakt istnienia nie tylko tego co ludzkie.
The aim of the article is to reflect on care as a theoretical category in pedagogy, the ethical dimension of emotional work inscribed in care relations and the binder of social bonds. The authors review the idea of care in the theories of universalist ethics of principles, in ethology and animal psychology, in gender, post-humanist and non-anthropocentric contexts. The overview of selected concepts of care proves the high complexity of this concept and its diverse, ambivalent meanings. Care is related to reflection on the world, culture, and society - it accompanies reflection on weakness and fragility, inherent in the existence of not only what is human.

Artykuł przybliża specyfikę prawa dziecka do partycypacji, wskazując, że choć jest ono jednym z filarów praw dziecka w ogóle, stanowi spore wyzwanie, zarówno jeśli chodzi o jego rozumienie (wielość znaczeń, jakie można przypisać dziecięcej partycypacji), jak i urzeczywistnianie (uprzedzenia dotyczące myślenia o dzieciach jako aktywnych, sprawczych aktorach społecznych). Analizuję w nim rozumienie prawa do partycypacji zawarte w Konwencji o prawach dziecka. Przede wszystkim jednak moim celem jest podświetlenie kilku znaków zapytania, wątpliwości i problemów związanych z partycypacją dzieci, wynikających w dużej mierze, choć nie tylko, z asymetrii szeroko rozumianej władzy w relacjach między dziećmi a dorosłymi. Mając zwłaszcza na uwadze kontekst dzieci marginalizowanych, partycypację traktuję tutaj nie tylko jako prawo, które dziecko może egzekwować vis-a-vis dorosłych czy systemu, ale również jako relację między nim a dorosłymi i – szerzej – kontekstem społecznym. W obrębie tej relacji wskazuję z kolei trzy wątki, które w moim odczuciu są istotne dla jej budowania: sprawstwo, zaufanie i etyka troski. Nie traktuję ich przy tym jako odpowiedzi na pytanie o to, jak powinno być realizowane prawo dziecka do partycypacji, ale raczej jako kontekst, w jakim warto o nim myśleć.
The article introduces the specificity of a child’s right to participation. Although it is considered as one of the pillars of children’s rights – a right to participation presents a challenge – both when it comes to its understanding (children’s participation has many different meanings) and its realisation (embodied by uneasiness of viewing children as active social actors). I analyse how it is defined in the context of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Most importantly however, I try to highlight some of the questions and problematic issues that children’s participation brings about, noting that most of them stem from the asymmetry of power in child-adult relations. Focusing on the marginalised children, I look into the three important aspects of child-adult relations that – albeit not unproblematically – shape the way we may think of children’s participation. These are: agency, trust and the ethics of care.

Basierend auf den Ergebnissen des interdisziplinären Forschungs- und Praxisprojektes ‚Selbstbestimmtes Leben im Pflegeheim‘ an der Universität Augsburg wird die Konzeption einer Pflegeheimethik vorgestellt, die sowohl aus einem care-ethischen wie auch einem organisationsethischen Strang besteht. Sozialwissenschaftliche Studienergebnisse werden hierbei ethisch reflektiert. Das Konzept einer relationalen Selbstbestimmung hat sich als tragfähig erwiesen, um den Bedürfnissen und Wünschen der im Pflegeheim Lebenden, aber auch derjenigen dort Arbeitenden gerecht zu werden. Ausgangspunkt für die hier entworfene Pflegeheimethik ist die Vulnerabilität der Bewohnenden – besonders augenscheinlich in der Corona-Pandemie –, die als Risiko wie Ressource verstanden wird. Dabei wurden Fragen einer ‚kleinen‘ Ethik des Alltags entwickelt wie auch die großen ethischen Fragestellungen, beispielsweise zum Technikeinsatz an diesem Lebens- und Arbeitsort eruiert.
Artykuł, bazując na wynikach interdyscyplinarnego projektu badawczego i praktycznego pt. Niezależne życie w domu opieki Uniwersytetu w Augsburgu, przedstawia koncepcję etyki domu opieki, która składa się zarówno z etyki opieki (care-ethics), jak i etyki organizacji. Zostały przy tym uwzględnione wyniki studiów nauk społecznych. Koncepcja relacyjnej niezależności okazała się do przyjęcia, aby sprostać potrzebom i życzeniom ludzi żyjących w domu opieki, ale także tym, którzy tam pracują. Punktem wyjścia dla naszkicowanej w tekście etyki domu opieki jest podatność na zranienia mieszkańców (szczególnie podczas pandemii koronawirusa), która jest rozumiana zarówno jako ryzyko, jak i szansa. Zostały przy tym rozwinięte problemy „małej” etyki życia codziennego, jak również wielkie kwestie etyczne, odkrywane przykładowo przy zastosowaniu techniki w tym miejscu życia i pracy.
A concept of nursing home ethics is presented based on the results of the interdisciplinary research and practice project “Self-determined life in the nursing home” at the University of Augsburg. This nursing home ethics consists of both a care-ethical and an organisational-ethical strand. The results of the cooperating social science studies are reflected ethically. The concept of relational self-determination has proven to be viable in order to meet the needs and wishes of those living in the nursing home, but also of those working there. The starting point for the nursing home ethics outlined here is the vulnerability of the residents – particularly evident in the Coronavirus pandemic – which is understood as both a risk and a resource. In the research process, questions concerning the ‘small’ ethics of everyday life were developed as well as larger ethical questions, for example, about the use of technology in this place of living and working.

Teachers are among many educational entities. In this profession, it is worth paying special attention to its ethical dimension. This is dictated primarily by the specific nature of the educational activity of the representatives of this socio-professional category which includes, among others, interpersonal relationships with pupils and students. They are manifested in various educational situations, oft en complex and complicated, requiring the teacher to represent a high ethical level, consistent with the arrangements made in the field of professional ethics. This, in turn, taking into account its shape, may be perceived differently. The aim of this article is to attempt to present the ethics of the teaching profession from the point of view of the ethics of care. Understanding the ethics of the teaching profession as an ethics of care is rarely presented in the literature on the subject. Most often, teaching ethics is associated with a set of specific ethical conditions or moral virtues, somewhat reducing the importance of the category of care in this ethics. Hence, the main research problem revolves around the questions: What are the characteristics of the ethical dimension of a teacher’s professional work and what does care and ethics of care mean in the teaching profession? The adopted research method was the analysis of the literature on the subject and of articles published in scientific journals, concerning the research issues being undertaken. The presented text discusses the ethical dimension of a teacher’s professional work from a normative perspective, in particular from the point of view of the ethics of duty and the ethics of virtue, and then the category of care and the ethics of care with its relation to the teacher’s professional activity. The analysis of the literature on the subject leads to the belief that in contemporary scientific explorations consistent with ethical and pedeutological thought, greater emphasis should be placed on the ethics of care in the teaching profession, as well as the possibility of contamination of the ethics of care and the ethics of justice. All this can serve to optimally practice the teaching profession in ethical terms.
Wśród wielu podmiotów edukacji wymienia się nauczyciela. W zawodzie uprawianym przez niego warto zwrócić szczególną uwagę na wymiar etyczny. Podyktowane jest to przede wszystkim specyficznym charakterem aktywności edukacyjnej przedstawicieli tej kategorii społeczno-zawodowej, w którą wpisane są między innymi relacje interpersonalne z uczniami-wychowankami. Manifestują się one w różnorodnych sytuacjach edukacyjnych, niejednokrotnie złożonych i skomplikowanych, wymagających od nauczyciela reprezentowania wysokiego poziomu etycznego, zgodnego z ustaleniami poczynionymi na gruncie etyki zawodowej. Ta z kolei, biorąc pod uwagę jej kształt, może być różnie postrzegana. Celem podejmowanych w niniejszym artykule rozważań jest próba ukazania etyki zawodu nauczyciela z punktu widzenia etyki troski. Ujmowanie etyki zawodu nauczyciela jako etyki troski rzadko eksponowane jest na gruncie literatury przedmiotu. Najczęściej etykę nauczycielską kojarzy się z zespołem określonych obwarowań etycznych bądź cnót moralnych, umniejszając nieco rangi kategorii troski w tej etyce. Stąd też główny problem badawczy oscyluje wokół pytań: Czym charakteryzuje się wymiar etyczny pracy zawodowej nauczyciela oraz co oznacza troska i etyka troski w zawodzie nauczyciela. Jako metodę badawczą przyjęto analizę literatury przedmiotu zarówno zwartą, jak również artykułów zamieszczonych w czasopismach naukowych, dotyczącą podejmowanej problematyki badawczej. W przedstawionym tekście kolejno zaprezentowano: wymiar etyczny pracy zawodowej nauczyciela z perspektywy normatywnej, w szczególności z punktu widzenia etyki powinności i etyki cnoty, a następnie kategorię troski oraz etykę troski wraz z odniesieniem jej do aktywności zawodowej nauczyciela. Przeprowadzona analiza literatury przedmiotu skłania do przekonania, że we współczesnych eksploracjach naukowych wpisujących się w myśl etyczno-pedeutologiczną należy położyć większy nacisk na etykę troski w zawodzie nauczyciela, a także ewentualną możliwość kontaminacji etyki troski i etyki sprawiedliwości. Wszystko to służyć może optymalnemu uprawianiu zawodu nauczyciela pod względem etycznym.

Analizuje znaczenie relacji troski jako fundamentu dla prawidłowego funkcjonowania wspólnoty społeczno-politycznej i krytyki idei kontraktu społecznego podejmowane przez przedstawicielki etyki troski. W sposób krytyczny przedstawia konsekwencje założeń wspólnoty obywatelskiej przyjmowanych przez Held.
In this article, an analysis was made of what’s new in the debate on the condition of the contemporary political community brought up by the discussion about the relationship between care and justice. The author introduces the category of care in philosophy and its understanding and with particular emphasis on the views of Virginia Held. He analyzes the importance of a relationship of care as the foundation for the proper functioning of the socio-political community and criticism of the idea of a social contract undertaken by representatives of the ethics of care. Critically, he presents the consequences of the assumptions of the civic community accepted by Held.

Este ensayo propone una interpretación del cuento “El Ojo Silva” de Roberto Bolaño (Putas asesinas, 2001) en la que se explora la relación entre la fotografía y la violencia propia de la sociedad contemporánea, una sociedad gobernada por la lógica del capitalismo global y la política del consumo, y cómo la confrontación con esta alianza oscura coloca al personaje en una situación límite que lo obliga a elegir entre tomar conciencia ético-política y devenir sujeto, o ignorar esta conciencia y ser una ausencia. Arguyo que en calidad de fotógrafo y a través de los proyectos fotográficos que lo llevan a la India, el protagonista participa en la violencia simbólica, reproduciendo un universo de sentido hegemónico para el lector y espectador occidental. La confrontación con la violencia infame y el rostro del otro vulnerable, en relación con el acto fotográfico, constituye un momento decisivo: es una cara-a-cara que exige responsabilidad por el otro (Levinas), un evento (Badiou) que obliga a decidir una nueva manera de ser. Este momento decisivo produce una respuesta afectiva que se corresponde con el modelo que establece la ética del cuidado, basada en amistad, cuidado y ternura.

According to Dietrich Bonhoeffer acting ethically is to love one’s own land and become a neighbour to others. You learn to believe by participating completely in life and therefore to the being of Christ. Only a theology of life and for life is capable of overcoming the opposition between God and the world, recognizing the reality of God in the reality of the world. The mature Christian is not addressed to a “stop-gap” God because he is incapable of finding solutions or right answers, but he must profess his faith through responsible action.

The article Victim and Guardian: A Short Ethical Reconnaissance is a proposal for fundamental rethinking of the phenomenon of care and support in the context of the experience of evil. The author analyses the phenomenon of transitivity of evil, and describes suffering of a guardian as an extension of the harm done to the victim. He notices that the expectation of care occurring in a difficult situation is one of the fundamental claims in social life, and not receiving it is one of the most painful moral experiences. Finally, the author emphasizes the moral value of guardian’s participation in the defeat of the victim. He says that we do not need the notion of triumph over evil to recognize this value.

Autonomie und Selbstbestimmung von Patientinnen und Patienten stellen zentrale Werte der modernen Gesundheitssorge dar. In der Zwischenzeit haben sich jedoch immer mehr die Grenzen des Konzepts Patientenautonomie gezeigt und oft wird auf die Notwendigkeit des Fürsorgeprinzips verwiesen. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird im vorliegenden Beitrag gezeigt, in welcher Weise das Verständnis von (Patienten)Autonomie in verschiedenen Stufen reformuliert wurde („gestufte“, „relationale“, „assistierte“ Autonomie und Autonomie als „Authentizität“), um dem Anliegen in Theorie und Praxis besser gerecht zu werden. Zusammenfassend wird sichtbar, dass Autonomie und Fürsorge nicht als rivalisierende, sondern einander ergänzende Prinzipien der Sorge um Alte, Kranke und Schwache Personen in modernen Gesundheitssystemen gesehen werden sollten

Autonomy and self-determination of patients are central values of modern health care. In the meantime, however, the limits of the concept of “patient autonomy” have become more and more apparent and the necessity of the “principle of care” is often referred to. Against this background, this article shows in which way the understanding of (patient) autonomy has been reformulated in different stages (“graduated”, “relational”, “assisted” autonomy and autonomy as “authenticity”) to better meet the real issue of autonomy in theory and practice. In summary, it becomes apparent that “autonomy” and “care” should not be seen as rival, but complementary principles of care for the elderly, sick and weak in modern health systems.

Przez dziesięciolecia teorie ekonomiczne zmieniały się pod wpływem wydarzeń historycznych oraz turbulencji gospodarczych, za każdym razem miały one jednak konkretne przełożenie na życie społeczeństw. Dziś, gdy teorie neoliberalne przestają cieszyć się uznaniem, rozwarstwienie pomiędzy najbogatszymi i najuboższymi postępuje prawie geometrycznie, a rozwój technologii sprawia, że drastycznie zmieniają się warunki pracy, potrzebne są nowe wizje gospodarki przyszłości, w której każdy mógłby znaleźć swoje miejsce i godnie żyć. Moja propozycja wiąże się z oparciem gospodarki na etyce troski, który to argument prezentuję w niniejszym artykule. W jego wstępie przyglądam się zachodzącym zmianom gospodarczym. Następnie przybliżam znaczenie etyki troski, a także opieki niezbędnej do rozwoju i reprodukowania się społeczeństw jako głównych ram przyjętych w dalszych rozważaniach nad gwarancją zatrudnienia oraz bezwarunkowym dochodem podstawowym, którym poświęcone są kolejne części artykułu. Analizy tych teorii, przeprowadzone z feministycznego punktu widzenia, wzbogacone zostaną także o propozycje dodatkowych rozwiązań, które wychodzą poza obowiązujący dziś paradygmat wzrostu.
For decades, economic theories have been changing due to historical events and economic turbulences, yet each time they have had an actual impact on the lives of societies. Today, when neo-liberal theories are no longer appreciated, the divide between the richest and the poorest members of society is growing almost exponentially, and technological development drastically changes working conditions, new visions of a future economy are needed – ones in which everyone can find their place and live a life worth living. My suggestion is that this economy should be based on the ethics of care – a line of argument presented in this article. It opens with an outline of the ongoing economic changes. There then follows an explanation of the importance of ethics of care, as well as of the care necessary for the development and reproduction of societies, as the main framework for further consideration of job guarantee and unconditional basic income, to which the subsequent sections of the article are devoted. The analysis of these theories from a feminist perspective will also be enriched with proposals for additional solutions that go beyond the current paradigm of growth.
