Opis:
The hydrophilic films based on starch and carboxymethyl starch (CMS) were obtained using cast method. The effect of CMS content on the physicochemical properties of prepared films were evaluated. With increasing content of starch derivative the moisture absorption, solubility in water as well as swelling ratio increased. The highest values of mechanical parameters (tensile strength and Young’s modulus) were determined for the starch/CMS film containing the lowest CMS amount, i.e. 10 wt.% (1.1 MPa, 15 MPa, respectively). For the same system the lowest moisture absorption, solubility in water as well as swelling ratio were reported. Thus, it could be concluded that for this system the highest crosslinking density has been achieved, what was confirmed by DMTA results. Such a film could potentially find application in food or agricultural industry.

Opis:
Water dispersions are usually a colloidal system in which one of the phases is highly dispersed in a second of a continuous nature, called a dispersion medium (in this case it is water). Dispersal is also called the process of distraction and self- -disperse as such. Water dispersions of carboxymethyl starch are the basis for the preparation of many products that, due to their initial dispersion form, can be modified, e.g. by adding fillers such as biodegradable films that affect the rheological properties of the dispersion [1]. The carboxymethyl derivative of starch was synthesized for the first time in 1924. The carboxymethylation reaction has become one of the most important starch modifications used in the industry on a large scale. Carboxymethyl starch (CMS) is characterized by a good solubility in cold water and higher resistance to bacteria than unmodified starch [7–9]. The carboxymethyl starch is obtained by the reaction of carboxymethylation (etherification) of the alkaline starch consisting in the introduction of the substituents into the structure of the starch, by reaction with monochloroacetic acid sodium salt. This process is called Williamson’s synthesis and CMS with different degree of substitution can be obtained by means of the mentioned process [10, 11]. The degree of substitution of carboxymethyl starch has a significant influence on its rheological properties, water dispersion of CMS with DS = 0.87 showed five times higher viscosity than CMS with lower value of this parameter, i.e. 0.15. Water dispersions with an increase in the montmorillonite content showed a high viscosity increase (about twice the increase in viscosity with the addition of 3% by weight). In both cases, aqueous dispersions stored above one month may be subject to the environmental degradation. In addition, in cases of compositions containing MMT, a rapid drop in viscosity due to the montmorillonite sedimentation is observed [17]. Rheological research of water carboxymethyl starch dispersions has great importance for science and for the subsequent application possibilities of products obtained on their basis. The effect of fillers on viscosity, and thus on the possibility of mixing them with aqueous CMS dispersions, affects, for example, the production of biodegradable films based on CMS with MMT, where the film is obtained from an aqueous dispersion of CMS with MMT with the addition of glycerine and citric acid [22]. Moreover, water dispersion of carboxymethyl starch with the addition of montmorillonite can be used as an additive to drilling fluids, electro-reed liquids or foundry adhesives [17].

Opis:
Emission of gases under high temperature after pouring molten metal into moulds, which contain the organic binder or other additives (solvents or curing agent), may be an important factor influencing both on the quality of the produced castings, and on the state of environment. Therefore, a comprehensive studies of the emitted gases would allow to determine restrictions on the use of the moulding sands in foundry technologies, eg. the probability of occurrence of casting defects, and identify the gaseous pollutants emitted to the environment. The aim of the research presented in this paper was to determine the amount of gases that are released at high temperatures from moulding sands bonded by biopolymer binder and the quantitative assessment of the emitted pollutants with particular emphasis on chemical compounds: benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX). The water-soluble modified potato starch as a sodium carboxymethyl starch with low (CMS-NaL) or high (CMS-NaH) degree of substitution was a binder in the tested moulding sands. A tests of gases emission level were conducted according to the procedure developed at the Faculty of Foundry Engineering (AGH University of Science and Technology) involving gas chromatography method (GC). The obtained results of the determination of amount of BTEX compounds generated during the decomposition process of starch binders showed lower emission of aromatic hydrocarbons in comparison with binder based on resin Kaltharz U404 with the acidic curing agent commonly used in the foundries.

Opis:
The aim of this study was the preliminary assessment the effectiveness of application of sodium carboxymethyl starch (CMS-Na) as an additives to green sands with bentonite. Two modified starches CMS-Na having a low and a high degree of substitution (DS), 0.2 and 0.9 respectively, were chosen for preparing moulding sands. Influence of modified starch with different DS on the properties of the green sand was determined based on the results of the determination: apparent density, permeability, free flowability, friability and compressive strength, tensile and shear green sands with the addition of starch. The properties of the starch without starch-based additives were compared with the properties of green sand containing in the composition of CMS-Na with different degree of substitution.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in properties of yarn made by sizing with synthetic and natural modified corn starch. Different procedures for obtaining modified natural (corn) starch and various combinations of natural and synthetic sizes were used to explore the differences in the properties of sized yarn. The sizing process was carried out under with constant conditions in a newly developed laboratory sizing machine on twisted cotton yarns of 20×2 tex and 30×2 tex. According to the results obtained, yarn sized with synthetic sizes has substantially better properties than those which are naturally sized with modified starch. However, sometimes these differences are not significant or they do not exist at all. Twisted yarn is not always necessary in sizing in order to increased its strength but rather to protect the surface from wear and refine projecting fibers; in this case natural modified starch from corn can meet the requirements. The significance of this research is the application of natural sizes, improvement of the sizing process with natural modified sizes using new achievements in the development of the sizing process, and thus creating a positive environmental and economic impact.
Celem pracy było zbadanie zmian właściwości przędz preparowanych preparacjami syntetycznymi i z naturalnie modyfikowanej skrobi. Proces nanoszenia preparacji przeprowadzono przy zachowaniu stałych warunków nowo zbudowanej laboratoryjnej maszynie. Obrabiano skręcane przędze bawełniane o masie liniowej 20 × 2 tex i 30 × 2 tex.
