Opis:
Secondarily phosphatised olenid trilobites from organic−rich limestones (orsten) in the Furongian (Upper Cambrian) of Västergötland, south−central Sweden, are described and illustrated. All trilobites originate from the Peltura scarabaeoides Zone and were collected on the western slope of Kinnekulle. Only the dorsal exoskeletons have become secondarily phosphatised, and the ventral appendages are not preserved. Yet the material is otherwise remarkably well preserved and reveals the morphology of the olenid trilobites in greater detail than hitherto known. Species belonging to the genera Ctenopyge, Sphaerophthalmus, Parabolina, and Peltura are identified, and several juvenile specimens are present in the material. The material is disarticulated and fragmentary, and it has only been possible to identify a few specimens to species level. In addition to chaetognaths and conodonts, the trilobites are associated with pelmatozoan columnals, a possible camaroid, and fossils of uncertain affinities. These fossils, along with a probable conulariid fragment from the Peltura minor Zone, are also described and discussed. The presence of a benthic fauna of pelmatozoans, and possible conulariids and camaroids, indicates that at least parts of the Peltura zones were deposited during dysoxic rather than anoxic periods. Moreover, the sea floor must have been firm enough to allow colonisation by sessile organisms.

Opis:
A stem-group brachiopod, Oymurania gravestocki Ushatinskaya gen. et sp. nov. is described herein from the middle Atdabanian-lower Botoman Stages (-Cambrian Stage 3) of the Siberian Platform. The fossils were extracted from limestone beds of the Emyaksin, Perekhod, and Pestrotsvet formations as assemblages of disarticulated orthoconic to cyrtoconic porous shells in apatite preservation. The originally organophosphatic shells of Oymurania are externally similar to mitral sclerites (ventral valves) of the stem-group brachiopod Micrina, although no sellate-like sclerites, nor differentiated subapical area with apophyses were recognised in our material. The range of Oymurania shells with sub-central to posteromarginal apex is similar to that of ventral valves ofMickwitzia. Oymurania is also characterised by the system of radial and orthogonal canals open in pairs or triplets in small depressions or indentations of growth lamellae in the outer shell surface. The orthogonal (Micrina-Setatella type) and radial (horizontal setigerous tubes) canals are widespread among the early Cambrian stem-group brachiopods, such as Micrina, Mickwitzia, and Setatella. In addition to these canals, Oymurania exhibits a well-developed acrotretoid columnar microstructure, also known from Setatella. A broad subapical platform in cyrtoconic shells (presumably ventral valves) of Oymurania is interpreted homologous to the deltoid area in mitrals of Micrina and pseudointerarea/interarea in ventral valves of Setatella/paterinid brachiopods. Except with probable cell imprints and openings of orthogonal canals, no morphological differentiation was, however, reflected by the shell interior of Oymurania gravestocki. Being closely related to tannuolinids and mickwitziids, Oymurania complements the picture of diversification of the early Cambrian stem-group brachiopods that occurred in parallel with radiation of paterinids and other crow-group brachiopods on the Siberian Platform and worldwide.

Six specimens of a strongly curved, cylindrical hexactinellid sponge have been recovered from the Tommotian– Atdabanian Hetang Biota of South China, and are described as Decumbispongia yuani gen. et sp. nov. The robust, thick−walled sponge shows no evidence of an osculum or basal structures, and the body form is inconsistent with an upright, filter−feeding life position. Interpretations as a detritivore feeding by amoeboid extensions, or as a facultative chemosynthetic symbiosis of sponge and bacteria are considered. The latter interpretation is preferred due to the highly constrained body shape, and the body form is interpreted from this perspective. The species indicates that Cambrian sponges occupied at least some autecological niches that appear to have been vacant since that time.

A section through the Upper Cambrian black shales and limestones at Kakeled on Kinnekulle, Västergötland, Sweden, extends from the lower–middle part of the Agnostus pisiformis Zone into the Peltura scarabaeoides Zone. Fossils are usually preserved only in the stinkstones, but in the A. pisiformis Zone trilobites can be found also in the shales. Lithologically, the stinkstones can be subdivided into primary coquinoid limestone, which include the majority of the fossils, and early diagenetically formed limestone. The orientation of cephala and pygidia of A. pisiformis were measured on four shale surfaces and one stinkstone surface. The majority of the shields were deposited with the convex side up and showed a preferred orientation, suggesting that their positions were affected by currents. Above the A. pisiformis Zone the section comprises the Olenus/Homagnostus obesus Zone (0.30 m), the upper part of the Parabolina spinulosa Zone (0.05 m), the Peltura minor Zone (1.15 m), and the Peltura scarabaeoides Zone (2.50 m). The Leptoplastus and Protopeltura praecursor zones are missing. The Olenus/H. obesus Zone is represented only by the O. gibbosus and O. wahlenbergi subzones, whereas the O. truncatus, O. attenuatus, O. dentatus, and O. scanicus subzones are missing.

Onychodictyon ferox, from the Lower Cambrian Chengjiang Lagerstätte, is a worm−like armored lobopod with 10 pairs of dorsal plates and a pair of probable sensory appendages (“antennae”). Newly discovered complete specimens show that Onychodictyon is represented by two species: O. ferox with a “head” bearing a pair of dorsal “antennae” and a trunk with 11 pairs of limbs, whereas O. gracilis has a blunt anterior end without any appendages and a trunk with 12 pairs of limbs. Because of the close resemblance of the “antennae” of O. ferox and those of the lobopod Miraluolishania, they are considered to be homologous structures. The “antennae” of Cambrian lobopodians are proposed to be homologous with the arthropod antennulae.

Opis:
Limestone erratics in the Early Miocene glacio−marine Cape Melville Formation of King George Island, West Antarctica, have yielded Early and Middle Cambrian small skeletal fossils (SSF) accompanied by calcified cyanobacteria, archaeocyath and spiculate sponges, trilobites and echinoderms. The SSF assemblage comprises disarticulated sclerites of chancelloriids, halkieriids, tommotiids, lapworthellids, palaeoscolecids, hyolithelminths, lingulate brachiopods, helcionelloid molluscs, hyoliths, and bradoriids. All 24 described species are common to Antarctica and Australia. Most are recorded here from Antarctica for the first time, including Shetlandia multiplicata gen. et sp. nov. and two new species Byronia? bifida and Hadimopanella staurata. The lithological and fossil contents of the boulders are almost identical with autochthonous assemblages from the Shackleton Limestone in the Argentina Range and Transantarctic Mountains. Cambrian outcrops around the Weddell Sea are a plausible source of the erratics. The fauna is closely similar to that from the uppermost Botomian Wilkawillina Limestone in the Flinders Ranges and Parara Limestone on Yorke Peninsula, and Toyonian Wirrealpa and Aroona Creek Limestones in the Flinders Ranges, as well as the Ramsay Limestone on Yorke Peninsula, all in the Arrowie and Stansbury Basins of South Australia. These very similar faunal and facies successions for Antarctica and Australia strongly support their common biotic and sedimentary evolution on the same margin of a greater Gondwana supercontinent throughout the Early Cambrian.

Opis:
Cricocosmia jinningensis, one of the most abundant palaeoscolecid worms from the Lower Cambrian Chengjiang deposits of south China, was originally described as bearing double longitudinal rows of lateral conical sclerites on the trunk. New observation reveals that the ventral trunk bears an additional set of ventral sclerites while the lateral sclerites display a tubercle−bearing (inner surface) and net−like (outer surface) microstructure similar to that of Tabelliscolex hexagonus. These findings mean that: (1) Cricocosmia shows a dorso−ventral and antero−posterior differentiation in trunk ornament; (2) as seen from the microstructure, Cricocosmia is close to Tabelliscolex hexagonus, supporting the idea that lobopodians and arthropods, both of which show an upper capping layer in the outer sclerites, are more closely related than the palaeoscolecidans; and (3) the similarities among the scalids, pharyngeal teeth and the trunk spines of palaeoscolecidans are superficial. Tabelliscolex maanshanensis sp. nov., characterized by an inner concentric circlet of laminae in each tubercle of the lateral trunk plate, is proposed herein. Element mapping reveal that four known pathways of preservation can be found co−occurring in a single specimen of Cricocosmia or Tabelliscolex, which sheds new light on the preservation of the Chengjiang fossils.

Zhenghecaris shankouensis gen. et sp. nov. is one of the largest “bivalved” arthropods of the Lower Cambrian Maotianshan Shale fauna. Its non−mineralized carapace was dome−like, laterally compressed, armed with rostral features, and probably enclosed the entire body of the animal. Zhenghecaris was provided with elliptical stalked lateral eyes. The carapace design, external ornament and visual organs of Zhenghecaris suggest affinities with the Thylacocephala, an extinct (Lower Silurian to Upper Cretaceous) group of enigmatic arthropods whose origins remain poorly understood. The bivalved arthropodsIsoxys and Tuzoia (Lower and Middle Cambrian) are two other potential thylacocephalan candidates making this group of arthropods a possible new component of Cambrian marine communities. Zhenghecaris, Isoxys, and Tuzoia are interpreted as nektonic animals that probably inhabited the lower level of the water column in shallow shelf settings at depths of perhaps 100–150 m or less. Their feeding mode either in the water column (e.g., mesozooplankton) or on the substrate (e.g., small epibenthos, detritus) is uncertain, although some of these arthropods were possibly mid−water predators (e.g., Isoxys with raptorial appendages).

Opis:
The affinities of a considerable part of the earliest skeletal fossils are problematical, but investigation of their microstructures may be useful for understanding biomineralization mechanisms in early metazoans and helpful for their taxonomy. The skeletons of Early Cambrian mollusc-like organisms increased by marginal secretion of new growth lamellae or sclerites, the recognized basal elements of which were fibers of apparently aragonite. The juvenile part of some composite shells consisted of needle-like sclerites; the adult part was built of hollow leaf-like sclerites. A layer of mineralized prism-like units (low aragonitic prisms or flattened spherulites) surrounded by an organic matrix possibly existed in most of the shells with continuous walls. The distribution of initial points of the prism-like units on a periostracurn-like sheet and their growth rate were mostly regular. The units may be replicated on the surface of internal molds as shallow concave polygons, which may contain a more or less well-expressed tubercle in their center. Tubercles are often not enclosed in concave polygons and may co-occur with other types of textures. Convex polygons seem to have resulted from decalcification of prism-like units. They do not co-occur with tubercles. The latter are interpreted as casts of pore channels in the wall possibly playing a role in biomineralization or pits serving as attachment sites of groups of mantle cells. Casts of fibers and/or lamellar units may overlap a polygonal texture or occur without it. They may reflect an inner layer consisting of aragonitic fibers fused into more or less well-developed lamellar units. It seems that nacreous and crossed-lamellar aragonitic microstructures evolved in the Cambrian from such lamellar aragonitic microstructures independently in different groups of molluscs.

Diverse carbonaceous microfossils, including exceptionally preserved remains of non−biomineralizing metazoans, are reported from a basal middle Cambrian interval of the Kaili Formation (Guizhou Province, China). The application of a gentle acid maceration technique complements previous palynological studies by revealing a larger size−class of acritarchs, a richer assemblage of filamentous microfossils, and a variety of previously unrecovered forms. Metazoan fossils include Wiwaxia sclerites and elements derived from biomineralizing taxa, including chancelloriids, brachiopods and hyolithids, in common with previously studied assemblages from the early and middle Cambrian of Canada. In addition, the Kaili Formation has yielded pterobranch remains and an assemblage of cuticle fragments representing “soft−bodied” worms, including a priapulid−like scalidophoran. Our results demonstrate the wide distribution and palaeobiological importance of microscopic “Burgess Shale−type” fossils, and provide insights into the limitations and potential of this largely untapped preservational mode.

Opis:
Quartz cementation is a major parameter controlling the reservoir properties of the Middle Cambrian quartz arenites of the central and western parts of the Baltic Basin. Marked local variations in the porosity and permeability severely complicate oil exploration and exploitation inWest Lithuania. Commonly, the porosity of the oil reservoirs is 6–8%. Therefore even minor changes in the porosity have a considerable impact on the potential of oil fields. A predictive model of the quartz cementation is proposed, based on kinetic modelling results. The precipitation rate-limiting model effectively explains sharp variations in quartz cementation controlled by grain-size changes. The model was further improved by incorporating the sorting factor. Even so, the amount of quartz cementation is overpredicted by 4–7% in some intervals, implying that the precipitation rate-limiting model is too simplified. A good correlation was obtained between stylolite spacing and quartz cementation, the overpredicted quartz amount increasing with an increase in stylolite spacing. The modelling results argue against any discernable impact of the oil on the reservoir quality of the sandstones. The successful prediction of reservoir quality mainly depends on correct reconstruction of the sedimentary environment of the Middle Cambrian deposits. The evolutionary model of the quartz cementation suggests a good reservoir quality of the Cambrian sandstones during the later part of Late Palaeozoic, when most of oil was generated in the basin.
