Mimo wielkiego dorobku badawczego, przedmiotem kontrowersji pozostaje nadal tak podstawowa kwestia, jak identyfikacja protagonisty: która z postaci na obrazie przedstawia Mateusza? Taka sytuacja stawia pod znakiem zapytania odpowiedniość dotychczas stosowanych metod interpretacji W artykule rozważono ten problem na generalnym tle: skąd w ogóle wiadomo kto jest kim w obrazie i zaproponowano nowe uzasadnienie tradycyjnej identyfikacji w oparciu o przesłanki wynikające z kontekstu dzieła.
Caravaggio’s painting Calling of St Matthew has been inciting vivid interest since its creation. Additionally, it is one of those works whose studying has been perfecting the methodology of art history. Despite the painting’s extensive studies what has remained controversial is such a basic issue as the identification of the protagonist: which of the figures in the painting is Matthew? Such a situation questions the appropriateness of to-date applied interpretation methods. This very issue is analysed against a general background: how do we know who is who in the painting, and a new justification of the traditional identification based on the presumptions resulting from the work’s contexts has been proposed.

The essay formulates four criteria for identifying the topos "signs of the times" and applies them for a specific Christian understanding of the ecological crisis. The aim of the argumentation is to decide why and in what way climate change, ecological degradation but also the new awareness of the value of nature is a theological issue. The second part of the essay deals with the question which competence the churches can contribute to the ecological discourse of a pluralistic, partly secular or atheistic society. I speak also about the encyclical Laudato si’.

Calling out and dragging practice has emerged as one of the dominant popular cultures among Nigerian youths owing to the ubiquity of social media platforms. However, despite the growing acceptability of calling out and dragging among the youths, empirical research focusing on this online practice are generally rare. Therefore, this study investigated University of Ibadan undergraduates’ conceptions and dispositions towards calling out and dragging on Twitter. The theory of reasoned action was employed as the conceptual framework, while data were primarily sourced from 318 undergraduates who were selected through the multistage sampling technique. Survey questionnaires and in-depth interview methods were strategically combined for the purpose of data elicitation. Results showed that the majority of the respondents (64%) conceived calling out and dragging as the tagging of the depraved members of society. Although the most significant single share (55.5%) identified celebrities as the category of people frequently called out and dragged on Twitter, most of them (55.9%) mentioned religious issues as the trending topic they usually consciously avoided. Calling out and dragging is an online practice that needs to be moderated because of its potential multiple social ramifications.

Prezentowany esej odwołuje się do przemówienia, które Carolyn Ellis wygłosiła z okazji przejścia na emeryturę po kilkudziesięciu latach pracy w Uniwersytecie Południowej Florydy. W wydarzeniu, które odbyło się 25 stycznia 2019 r., brali udział przyjaciele, studenci, a także pracownicy naukowi i władze uczelni. Profesor Ellis opowiedziała kilka historii o swoich początkach na uniwersytecie, ważnych, formujących spotkaniach oraz o współpracy z Arthurem Bochnerem. Tekst, podobnie jak przemówienie, zawiera także wspomnienie o wsparciu, którego doświadczyła, spełnieniu, które znalazła w życiu uniwersyteckim, pasji nauczania płynącej z serca, skupionej w całości na drugiej osobie oraz prowadzonych badaniach, będących istotą pracy na uczelni. Profesor Ellis opisuje również korzyści z uczestnictwa w programie studiów w zakresie jakościowej i ilościowej analizy komunikacji społecznej z uwzględnieniem humanistycznej perspektywy. Tekst kończy się dziesięcioma aforyzmami lub obserwacjami z lekcji wyniesionych z doświadczenia ponad czterech dekad spędzonych na uniwersytecie, wśród których znalazły się zarówno niewypowiedziane wyzwania, jak i wielkie radości oraz momenty szczęścia.
In this essay, I present the talk I gave at the celebration honoring my retirement from University of South Florida (USF). Held on January 25, 2019, this event was attended by an audience of friends, students, and university faculty and administrators. I tell several stories about coming to USF, meeting and collaborating with Art Bochner, and the support I experienced and the fulfillment I found in my university life. Passionate about teaching from the heart to the whole person and doing research that matters, I describe the meaning I derived from participating in an interpretive and qualitative Communication program that focused on the human sciences. I end with 10 aphorisms or observations from lessons learned in my experience of four decades in the university, some of which allude to the unnamed challenges I experienced among the great joys and good fortune of academic life.

The aim of the article is to discuss the understanding of human sexuality evinced by a group of Kenyan Catholics from the methodological perspective of pastoral theology, pointing out certain conclusions and pastoral suggestions. The article comprises the following parts: theological-normative, sociological, and theological-postulating. The first synthetically presents human sexuality from the point of view of the teaching of the Catholic Church, the second discusses methodology and results of the conducted empirical research, while the third presents conclusions and suggestions for pastoral care of families. The research results show that the majority of respondents shared Catholic convictions on sexuality. However, less than half of the respondents believed that love of a man and a woman serves to transmit life to children and that true love of a man and woman requires an indissoluble marriage. A quite high percentage of respondents did not agree that sexual intercourse aims to forge a psychological and spiritual bond between the partners. Women more rarely than men shared Catholic convictions on human sexuality and more rarely than men believed that a human being should not be used as if he/ she was an object. This may show women’s lack of access to education as well as a strong impact of local traditional cultural models on their understanding of the role of women. These results point to some missionary-pastoral challenges, especially as regards education of youth, spouses, and spouses-to-be, as well as that of clergy, catechists, and lay employees of family ministry.

Standard ECDIS configuration doesn’t foresee interaction with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) device. We propose a reasonable way to eliminate the drawbacks of existing VHF radiotelephony using DSC and obtain new advantages in communication and navigation in the frame of existing conventional installations. The proposed innovation is based on ECDIS software updating and the interconnection to DSC equipment. ECDIS modernization would get rid a navigator of the routine procedures and handling with abstract data replacing them by understandable actions on ECDIS display. The proposed integration gives new abilities for smart addressed VHF/DSC communication by estimating the current navigational situation around the ship that is especially important in congested ports, waterways and poor visibility regarding human factor. The proposed modernization retains in operation all standard DSC and ECDIS functions and provides full compatibility with commonly used non-integrated equipment. Financial expenses to its implementation for ship-owner are minimal due to only software updating and standard cabling.

Perykopa Mk 8,31-33 bez wątpienia należy do najtrudniejszych fragmentów Ewangelii. Do Apostoła Piotra, który wcześniej wyznał swoją wiarę w Jezusa jako Mesjasza (w. 29), odnoszą się słowa: „Zejdź mi z oczu szatanie” (w. 33). Niniejszy artykuł próbuje pokazać, iż Jezus w swojej naganie nie zamierza odrzucać Piotra, nawet jeśli czasownik ἐπιτιμάω bywa zazwyczaj używany w kontekście wyrzucania złych duchów. Celem wydarzenia w Cezarei Filipowej jest ponowne wezwanie Apostoła, tym razem do bezwarunkowego pójścia za Jezusem. Jezusowe słowa: ὕπαγε ὀπίσω μου (w. 33) stanowią kolejny etap powołania Piotra, opisanego już na początku (1,16-18) i na końcu (16,7) Ewangelii według św. Marka.
The pericope of Mk 8:31-33 undoubtedly ranks among the most complex fragments in the entire Gospel. The Apostle Peter, who had already confessed his faith in Jesus as the Messiah (v. 29), is referred to with the following words: “Get behind Me, Satan” (v. 33). This article attempts to show that Jesus, in his rebuke of his apostle (even though the verb ἐπιτιμάω is consistently used in the Gospel to describe the casting out of unclean spirits) does not intend to condemn or reject Peter. Instead, the meaning behind the scene that played out in Caesarea Philippi is yet another call for Peter to follow Jesus unconditionally. The words of Jesus: ὕπαγε ὀπίσω μου (v. 33) bring to mind Peter’s calling, described both at the beginning (1:16-18) and at the end (16:7) of the Gospel of Mark.

Animizacje przypisujące górom wołanie lub milczenie są częstymi tropami w „literaturze górskiej”. W artykule za pomocą narzędzi topotropograficznych i geopoetologicznych zbadano przestrzeń kreowaną przez takie antropomorfizmy bądź personifikacje. Interpretacja wstępu do albumu Góry wołają. Wędrówka z obiektywem od Olzy po Czeremosz napisanego przez Rafała Malczewskiego pozwoliła wyodrębnić podstawowe funkcje i znaczenia mowy i milczenia szczytów. Na tej podstawie, a także w kontekście innych utworów, wyeksponowano ekokrytyczny wymiar animizacji gór i zasygnalizowano pojawienie się w piśmiennictwie o tematyce górskiej koniunktury na prozopopeję.
Calling or silent mountains as the examples of common animations are frequently employed tropes in the ‘mountain literature.’ By means of tools such as topothropography and geopoetics the author of this article examines the literary space established by such anthropomorphisms and personifications. The interpretation of Rafał Malczewski’s introduction to Góry wołają. Wędrówka z obiektywem od Olzy po Czeremosz [The Mountains Are Calling. Wandering with a Camera from Olza to Cheremosh River] indicates the main functions and meanings of the voice and silence of the mountain peaks. Based on this and in the context of other literary pieces the author exposes the ecocritical dimension of the animations of mountains and also, points out the growing interest in applying prosopopeia in the literature devoted to highland regions.

Te Church and the family a mutual good for yourself based on Amoris laetitia ad- hortations. The article shows two meanings of the goodness, which include two specific phenom- ena - the Church and the family. Deep theological approach to this matter can empha- size a mission associated with this phenomena. The first task is to analyze the doctrine of Church and the reality of contemporary world. This study shows new areas of relation between the Church and the family connected each other in mutual help and assistance. The most important thing is that we learn how to live in community at first in our family. Hence, growing in the family helps to find our own place in the Church. The fulfillment of God’s vocation at this two areas is the means of the exposing true God to people. Relation between the Church and the family reveals God, who leans over every human being and wants to save him. We can figure out that there are many problems and difficulties both in the Church and in the family. The causation lies in the human imperfection and egoism. It is, in fact, all the more reason to find the methods of cooperation and support for every human living in the family and in the Church.

The phenomenon of Padre Pio’s active participation in the suffering of Christ shows us its two complementary levels. Even though the exceptional Grace appears in his soul and body in a visible way, it remains for him an inscrutable mystery. In this paper the author focused on the Padre Pio’s sufferings from Christological perspective. Suffering is valuable only if it is offered up in union with the Passion of Jesus. His Redemptive Suffering bestows a new meaning and value on human suffering. P. Pio didn’t comprehend his suffering as a rejection by God but as an invitation to the participation in the Redemptive Mystery accomplished by Passion of Jesus Christ. The author tried to show the P. Pio’s vocation to participation in the Suffering of Jesus and how he fulfilled it by willingly offering himself up and taking upon himself the burden of his cross.
Analizując fenomen cierpienia ojca Pio jako jego aktywnego uczestnictwa w cierpieniach Chrystusa, odkrywamy jego komplementarną dwubiegunowość: z jednej strony mamy do czynienia z rodzajem szczególnej łaski, która manifestuje się poprzez zjawiska fizyczne i duchowe na ciele i duszy zakonnika, a z drugiej strony pozostaje dla niego samego niepojętą tajemnicą. Autor w swym artykule rozważa zagadnienie cierpienia ojca Pio z perspektywy chrystologicznej, to znaczy takiej, która w cierpieniu widzi rzeczywistą wartość o zbawczym znaczeniu, pod warunkiem że ma ona swe odniesienie do Chrystusa, który nadał cierpieniu taki właśni sens i walor. Cierpienie nie jest tu przejawem odrzucenia przez Boga, ale zaproszeniem do uczestnictwa w wielkim misterium odkupienia dokonanym przez Chrystusa. Autor prezentuje dwa poziomy współuczestnictwa ojca Pio w cierpieniach Chrystusa: pierwszy nakreśla ramy jego powołania do tej misji, a drugi ukazuje jej realizację jako programu życiowego, który wypełnia się poprzez dobrowolną ofiarę z samego siebie i przyjęcie krzyża.

The work presents the basics of St. John Paul II’s reflection on women, their dignity, nature and vocation, pointing to motherhood as the key to the development of the Pope’s teaching, organizing his statements. An analysis of the writings of John Paul II shows that, regardless of his reflections on human dignity, he supports his reflections on women by emphasizing their ability to physical motherhood, assuming the impact of this ability and the possibility of its realization on the tasks and obligations of women towards all humanity. An analysis of the Pope’s writings shows that he did not devote the same amount of attention and space to reflection on the meaning of masculinity and the vocation of men.

Calling is a gift from God and a mystery, it realizes in a reality of faith, which enables human to have a conversation with God – Holy Trinity, which continuously – Creates, Rescues – and Sanctifies – which, with a new dynamism, allows to realize an evangelic message, which, as sine qua non condition, is an integral part of every calling. Marriage – a family, is a “God’s atom”, whose energy – sacramental grace – is a reality capable of constant renewing of the face of this basic, even fundamental human community, which is family, society – to finally change the face of earth. Among the challenges and problems, which marriage and family may encounter nowadays, especially evil ideologies, which not only have doubt in calling for marriage and family, but even question them and their miraculous and natural origin coming from The Creator’s plan, the need for non-ambiguous testimony of married couple and family to the world, as well as understanding, the gifts of calling and spreading the message, is becoming a more and more burning desire. In the pastoral year, in which we consider the topic “Filled with Holy Spirit”, being open for His gifts, charisms, and full of hope for yet appearing fruits, the pastoral and evangelic challenges should be undertaken, together with those challenges, which stay in the lively dialogue with Paraclete, striving for realization of the tasks coming from life, so called Christian calling and spreading the message.

Opis:
Marriage is a profound communion of life and love established by the Creator and normalized by His laws. It is the strongest bond that can exist between a man and a woman. The concept of marriage is closely connected with its monogamous character. Spouses in the sacrament of marriage get the proper grace from Christ, designed to improve love and to strengthen their indissoluble unity. Nowadays marriage is experiencing a crisis. Therefore, it would be presented not only as a covenant community or an institution, but as a vocation. The vocation is an act of summoning, which involves the mission consisting in completing a given task. The essence of a Christian vocation stemming from baptism is a dialogue of the freedom of God and a man, preceded by the choice of the person and commission of the given mission. A sacramental marriage is the way of bounding with God and following Christ, that is the most appropriate way to holiness for spouses. Therefore, an important message for a modern man is to present marriage as a vocation that is addressed to two people, which should be accepted by them and implemented. This situation also requires a change of the pastoral perspective and new opening not only for spouses, for whom marriage is a way to bind with God, but there is the needed to be opened to those for whom marriage is only the fulfillment of the requirements by the Church to get married.
Małżeństwo jest głęboką wspólnotą życia i miłości, ustanowioną przez Stwórcę i unormowaną Jego prawami. Jest najsilniejszą więzią, jaka może zaistnieć między kobietą i mężczyzną. Pojęcie małżeństwa łączy się ściśle z jego monogamicznym charakterem. Małżonkowie w sakramencie małżeństwa otrzymują od Chrystusa właściwą im łaskę, przeznaczoną do doskonalenia miłości i dla umacniania ich nierozerwalnej jedności. W obecnych czasach małżeństwo doświadcza kryzysu. Warto byłoby zatem ukazać je nie tylko jako przymierze, wspólnotę czy instytucję, ale jako powołanie. Powołanie jest aktem wezwania, które wiąże się z posłannictwem polegającym na wypełnieniu określonego zadania. Istotą powołania chrześcijańskiego wynikającego z chrztu św. jest dialog wolności Boga i człowieka, poprzedzony wyborem osoby i zleceniem jej misji. To właśnie sakramentalny związek małżeński jest sposobem związania się z Bogiem, pójścia za Chrystusem, czyli najwłaściwszą dla małżonków drogą kroczenia do świętości. Dlatego ważnym przesłaniem dla współczesnego człowieka jest ukazanie małżeństwa jako powołania, które skierowane jest do dwojga ludzi i powinno być przez nich przyjęte i realizowane.

Opis:
The article discusses the dignity and the vocation of women as seen by Saint Teresa Benedict of the Cross (Edith Stein). When God created of the man and the woman he gave them three tasks: being his image, populating the Earth and having the dominion over it. The woman has a greater gift, which is having custody of people, rather than of fighting. The original sin entered the human nature and weakened it but did not destroy it completely. The woman’s relationship with the man has changed. The woman, unsure of her dignity, strives to gain it by fighting with the man. The deepest desire of the female heart is, however, to love and to belong entirely to the loved one. The nature of women, though hurt by the original sin, can be reborn submitting to God. That does not mean that all women must become nuns but that each of them must become “the servant of the Lord”. The paradigm of it is the Mother of God. Mary is an example of three crucial virtues: obedience, trust, and the common life with the husband. The deepest feminine desire, when the woman can forget about herself and have her heart open to the needs and the suffering of others, can be achieved only in Eucharistic communion with Jesus.
