Sixty brachiopod species are reported from the Taboumakhlouf Formation (upper Eifelian) and the Bou Dib Formation (upper Eifelian to Givetian) of Jbel Issoumour, northern Maïder, Anti-Atlas, Morocco, on the basis of collections made by Volker Ebbighausen. The stratigraphy is based on reports of co-occurring trilobite assemblages. The relatively diversified fauna pre-dates the Taghanic event and is dominated in terms of diversity by atrypides and rhynchonellides (11 species each); other frequent species include Poloniproductus varians, Aulacella prisca, Tyersella tetragona, Schizophoria schnuri, Athyris ex gr. concentrica, Yeothyris? sinuata, and Thomasaria simplex. Spinatrypa ennigaldinannae Halamski and Baliński sp. nov. from the upper Eifelian is characterised by a transverse shell, typically 16–18 mm wide with 19–22 ribs. Prodavidsonia ebbigahuseni Halamski and Baliński sp. nov. differs from other representatives of the genus in having nearly flat shells. Eressella coronata Halamski and Baliński, nom. nov. is proposed as a replacement name for the permanently invalid Rhynchonella coronata Kayser, 1871 (non R. coronata Moore, 1861). Thomasaria simplex is documented as being a particularly variable species (costation, tongue, interarea position), so its broad taxonomic treatment is favoured. The brachiopod fauna shows distinct Rhenish affinities (numerous species in common with the Eifel and the Holy Cross Mountains) like the coeval fauna from southern Maïder, described previously. The Middle Devonian brachiopod fauna from the whole Maïder (north, described here and south, described previously) totals 87 species.

Eressella, a new genus of rhynchonellide brachiopods belonging to the superfamily Uncinuloidea Rzhonsnitskaya, 1956, is described with Rhynchonella coronata Kayser, 1871, as the type and only species. It is characterised by a dorsibiconvex profile with a resupinate ventral valve, costae rounded posteriorly, but acute and developing ventrally directed spur-like protuberances anteriorly, small dental cavities, cardinal process multilobed posteriorly and massive anteriorly, and the presence of a septalium and thick dorsal median septum. Given the present state of flux in the systematics of the superfamily, it is conventionally placed within the family Uncinulidae Rzhonsnitskaya, 1956, although similarities with the subfamily Betterbergiinae Savage, 1996 and the family Eucharitinidae Sartenaer, 2015 are also noted. Eressella coronata, hitherto the only representative of the genus, is known from the Eifel Hills (Eifelian, mainly middle Eifelian), from central Poland (especially from the Eifelian of the Holy Cross Mts.), and from the Moroccan Anti-Atlas (late Eifelian to early Givetian, details uncertain).

Lingulide brachiopods, assigned to Lingula dregeri Andreae, 1893, have been identified from the Middle Miocene (Upper Badenian) of the Hungarian part of the Pannonian Basin. Although widely distributed in the Miocene of the Central Paratethys (Austria, Poland, Ukraine, Romania), the genus Lingula was not described previously from Hungary. Outside of the Central Paratethys, L. dregeri also has been recognized in the Atlantic and Mediterranean provinces and most probably in the Eastern Paratethys.

The eoorthid brachiopod Apheoorthina is reported for the first time from the Lower Ordovician of NW Argentina. It is represented by a species similar to A. ferrigena from the Tremadocian of the Prague Basin, increasing the faunal affinities between the Central Andean Basin and the South European microcontinents, in particular the Bohemian region (Perunica). Nine out of the fourteen brachiopod genera reported from the Tremadocian of the Central Andean Basin (~64%) are shared with the Mediterranean region, four of which (~28%) have been recorded in the Prague Basin, and two (Kvania and Apheoorthina) are restricted to the Central Andes and Perunica. Dispersal pathways around Gondwana are analyzed in the light of major factors affecting large-scale distribution of brachiopods (environment, larval capacity for dispersal, oceanic currents). The presence in Apheoorthina aff. ferrigena of a well-preserved larval protegulum measuring 420 μm in width and 210 μm in length strongly suggests that this species had planktotrophic larvae capable of long-distance dispersal. According to recent ocean-atmosphere general circulation models for the Ordovician Period, the Central Andean margin was dominated by the cold-water Antarctica Current. Despite the complex non-zonal pattern produced by current deflections around the peri-Gondwanan microcontinents, the general westward circulation sense favoured larval dispersal from the Andean region to North Africa, Avalonia, the Armorican Terrane Assemblage, and Perunica. On the other hand, the eastwards flowing Gondwana Current connected the North Gondwana waters with the South American epicontinental seas, which could explain the reversed migration of some brachiopods.

The organophosphatic early Cambrian (Terreneuvian, Cambrian Stage 2) fossil Tumulduria incomperta has been problematic ever since its original description in 1969. Comparison of abundant specimens from the Lower Cambrian of Siberia with co-occurring brachiopod valves show that T. incomperta represents the central portion of the ventral interarea of a paterinid brachiopod similar to Cryptotreta neguertchenensis, and that the domed central portion of typical Tumulduria specimens represents the ridge-like pseudodeltidium of the interarea.

The paper includes a taxonomic revision of four externally similar Middle Devonian rhynchonellide species from northwestern Africa (Maïder, Tindouf Syncline) and Central Europe (Eifel, Bergisches Land, Holy Cross Mts.), considered in recent papers as representatives of Kransia Westbroek, 1967 or Nalivkinaria Rzhonsnitskaya, 1968. All four possess a septalium and a multilamellate cardinal process, the assignment to Nalivkinaria, having a bifid cardinal process, is therefore clearly inappropriate. Lebanzuella? issoumourensis (Drot, 1971) is present in the Givetian of Africa; two subspecies, L.? issoumourensis issoumourensis from Jbel Issoumour and L.? issoumourensis smarensis ssp. nov. from Western Sahara, are distinguished by their biometric characteristics. The other two species are included in Kransia (Fatimaerhynchia) subgen. nov. differing from Kransia (K.) in the presence of a septalium; the occurrence of such a variable structure is considered to be justification for distinction at the subgenus level. Kransia (Fatimaerhynchia) goldfussii (Schnur, 1853) is an Eifelian species. Kransia (Fatimaerhynchia?) aff. goldfussii from the Givetian of Bilveringsen is a separate species (larger, more transverse, more strongly ornamented), which is not described because of insufficient material. Kransia (Fatimaerhynchia) signata (Schnur, 1851) is present in the Middle Devonian of Jbel Issoumour, the middle Eifelian of the Eifel and the (upper?) Givetian of the Holy Cross Mountains.

Five brachiopod species are reported from two middle to upper Oxfordian (Late Jurassic) outcrops, situated in the Saïda and Frenda mountains (Tlemcenian Domain, north-western Algeria) and belonging to the heterochronous (Callovian to Oxfordian, locally to the Kimmeridgian) Argiles de Saïda Formation (Saïda Clay Formation). The upper Oxfordian (probably Dichotomoceras bifurcatus Zone) outcrop A yielded Dictyothyris kurri and Loboidothyridoidea indet. The middle Oxfordian (Liosphinctes plicatilis Zone, Cardioceras vertebrale Subzone) outcrop B yielded Monticlarella rollieri, Karadagithyris boullierae sp. n., and Zittelina sp.; this is the first report of the last-mentioned genus from Africa. Karadagithyris boullierae sp. n. is a link between previously known Bajocian to Bathonian (Callovian?) Karadagithyris s.s. and Tithonian to Lower Cretaceous species, formerly segregated as Svaljavithyris; the latter is considered herein as synonym of Karadagithyris. It is characterised by a plano-uniplicate anterior commissure and a suberect beak. The adult loop of Zittelina is confirmed as bilacunar (kingeniform) and not diploform (campagiform). The bulk of the assemblages comprises small and either smooth or finely ornamented species and thus represents a low-energy environment. The lack of modern revisions of the reported species in their type areas is the reason why only Dictyothyris kurri may be used as an index species for the middle to late Oxfordian.

This paper describes a sclerobiont association from the Paso Hondo Formation (Roadian, middle Permian), Chiapas, Mexico. Different marine invertebrates such as hederelloids, microconchids, bryozoans, and crinoids (represented by holdfasts) encrusted brachiopod shells belonging to Athyridida and Rhynchonellida. This association is similar to those recorded in different Devonian localities, especially by the co-occurrence of microconchids, hederelloids, and bryozoans. Paleoecological analysis revealed that bryozoans were the most abundant sclerobionts, whereas crinoid holdfasts were uncommon. Likewise, hederelloids and microconchids often settled on hosts previously colonized by bryozoans. Most microconchids encrusted rhynchonellid shells. A positive correlation between the size of the hosts and abundance/diversity of sclerobionts was recorded. The distribution analysis suggests that sclerobiont colonization could have been influenced either by inhalant currents of brachiopods, time of exposure, position of hosts, or by combination of all these factors. Moreover, most of commissures and foramens of brachiopods were not covered by epibionts, suggesting that there was a live interaction. Thus, studied brachiopods were likely encrusted syn vivo, and the interaction between sclerobionts and their brachiopod hosts was likely commensal since there is no damage to the brachiopod valves in the form of malformations or borings. On the contrary, the epibiont cover might have served as a natural shield against predators and parasites. The Roadian age of the association is based on the stratigraphic distribution of host brachiopods. The studied association inhabited open waters on a homoclinal carbonate ramp in the Chicomuselo region. Although encrusted brachiopods belong to the biotic Grandian Province, similar sclerobiont communities have not been previously recorded from the Permian of North America or beyond. The described community represents the youngest record of co-occurring microconchids, hederelloids, and bryozoans, as all previously known similar communities originate from the Late Devonian.

Thirteen species, belonging to eleven genera, i.e., Discinisca Dall, Novocrania Lee and Brunton, Lacazella Munier-Chalmas, Pliothyrina van Roy, Terebratulina d’Orbigny, Megathiris d’Orbigny, Argyrotheca Dall, Bronnothyris Popiel-Barczyk and Smirnova, Joania Álvarez, Brunton and Long, Platidia Costa and Megerlia King, have been identified in the lower Oligocene rocky-shore deposits at Mammendorf, central Germany. The occurrence of the species Discinisca fallens (Wood), Argyrotheca bitnerae Dulai and Megerlia truncata (Linnaeus) extends their stratigraphic range back to the early Oligocene. The affinity to the early Oligocene brachiopod fauna of the Mainz Basin is noted.

Retained colour pattern on the shells of Plectodonta sp. from the earliest Devonian of Podolia (Ukraine) is the first finding for strophomenide brachiopods and the oldest among articulate brachiopods. The colour pattern in Plectodonta sp. is composed of small, round, brownish spots scattered rather irregularly on the ventral valve only. This may suggest that the described pattern probably performed a protective function through disruptive camouflage against visual systems of potential predators. The occurrence of the colour pattern in Plectodonta sp. exclusively on the ventral valve strongly suggests that these brachiopods lived with the patterned (and convex) ventral valve upwards and the patternless concave dorsal valve facing to the underlying substrate. It thus contradicts a general assumption that concavo−convex brachiopods lived with their convex valves resting on the sediment.

Sixty-two Middle Devonian brachiopod species are described on the basis of >1300 specimens from the Taboumakhlof Formation (and subordinately probably also from the top of the El Otfal Formation) at Madne el Mrakib (middle to late Eifelian or early Givetian?), Aferdou el Mrakib (late Eifelian to middle Givetian), and Guelb el Maharch (early Givetian) on the southern edge of the MaÎder Syncline (eastern Anti-Atlas, Mo- rocco). Representatives of Craniida (2 taxa), Strophomenida (5), Productida (2), Orthotetida (2), Orthida (5), Pentamerida (5), Rhynchonellida (9), Atrypida (14), Athyridida (7), Spiriferida (9), and Spiriferinida (2) are present. The fauna is dominated quantitatively by the Atrypida (24% of taxa, about the half of specimens, and the commonest species Atryparia dispersa making up about 13% of the material); the Rhynchonellida (16% of taxa, about one-sixth of specimens) are the second largest order. A new genus of the family Pugnacidae (order Rhynchonellida), Paulinaerhynchia, is proposed with the type species P. paulinae gen. et sp. nov. from Maharch; it is closest to Pugnax, from which it differs in distinct costation, lack of a dorsal septum and septalium, and rudimentary dental plates. Desquamatia (D.) deserti sp. nov., a large and finely costate representative of the genus, is described also from Maharch. Antirhynchonella and Glosshypothyridina are reported for the first time or con- firmed to be present in the Givetian. Forty (possibly up to 46) species (71 or possibly up to 82% of the taxa identified at the species level) are present also in either Eifel (Germany) or the Holy Cross Mountains (Poland). Such a high ratio of species in common attests to unconstrained faunal exchanges among benthic faunas between the northern and southern shores of the Variscan Sea during the Middle Devonian. This favours the palaeogeo- graphic hypothesis of a narrow Variscan Sea.

Opis:
Tunethyris blodgetti sp. nov. from the Triassic Saharonim Formation, Makhtesh Ramon, an erosional cirque in southern Israel, is erected on the basis of a suite of 39 articulated specimens. The shells are very strongly sulciplicated, a feature that seems to be more prevalent in the Mesozoic than the Palaeozoic. The Saharonim Formation was deposited under quasi-normal, calm, relatively shallow marine conditions. Faunal constituents of the Saharonim Formation include conodonts, ostracods, foraminiferans, bivalves, cephalopods, gastropods, echinoderms and vertebrate remains that belong to the Sephardic Province and are diagnostic of the Middle Triassic series of Israel. The faunal composition and shallow depositional environment of the strata may help differentiate the Sephardic Province from the Germanic Muschelkalk and the Alpine Tethyan faunas to the north.

A new species of micromorphic articulate brachiopod (Rhynchonellida) Lambdarina jugowiensis sp. nov., from the upper Viséan (Sokolec Beds) of central Sudetes, SW Poland, is described. The studied specimens are calcified, what makes them unique in respect of their state of preservation. The material is represented by a full range of growth stages; from brephic to gerontic. Based on its morphological features and the palaeogeographical distribution of all its known species, two main evolutionary lines are proposed for the genus; the Australian and the European ones. Lambdarina was widely distributed in the equatorial-tropical waters of marginal seas of the Palaeotethys Ocean, mostly during Mississippian time.

A stem-group brachiopod, Oymurania gravestocki Ushatinskaya gen. et sp. nov. is described herein from the middle Atdabanian-lower Botoman Stages (-Cambrian Stage 3) of the Siberian Platform. The fossils were extracted from limestone beds of the Emyaksin, Perekhod, and Pestrotsvet formations as assemblages of disarticulated orthoconic to cyrtoconic porous shells in apatite preservation. The originally organophosphatic shells of Oymurania are externally similar to mitral sclerites (ventral valves) of the stem-group brachiopod Micrina, although no sellate-like sclerites, nor differentiated subapical area with apophyses were recognised in our material. The range of Oymurania shells with sub-central to posteromarginal apex is similar to that of ventral valves ofMickwitzia. Oymurania is also characterised by the system of radial and orthogonal canals open in pairs or triplets in small depressions or indentations of growth lamellae in the outer shell surface. The orthogonal (Micrina-Setatella type) and radial (horizontal setigerous tubes) canals are widespread among the early Cambrian stem-group brachiopods, such as Micrina, Mickwitzia, and Setatella. In addition to these canals, Oymurania exhibits a well-developed acrotretoid columnar microstructure, also known from Setatella. A broad subapical platform in cyrtoconic shells (presumably ventral valves) of Oymurania is interpreted homologous to the deltoid area in mitrals of Micrina and pseudointerarea/interarea in ventral valves of Setatella/paterinid brachiopods. Except with probable cell imprints and openings of orthogonal canals, no morphological differentiation was, however, reflected by the shell interior of Oymurania gravestocki. Being closely related to tannuolinids and mickwitziids, Oymurania complements the picture of diversification of the early Cambrian stem-group brachiopods that occurred in parallel with radiation of paterinids and other crow-group brachiopods on the Siberian Platform and worldwide.

The problematic brachiopod Mickwitzia Schmidt, 1888 is re−described based on new material of M. cf. occidens Walcott, 1908 from the Early Cambrian (Botomian) Bastion and Ella Island formations of Northeast Greenland. Etched material demonstrates that Mickwitzia has a lingulid−like juvenile (“larval”) shell with trails of nick−points, reflecting the movement of marginal setae. Juvenile and early mature ventral valves have a lingulid−like pseudointerarea with a pedicle groove. The shell of M. cf. occidens is only partially phosphatic, in particular around the juvenile–early mature shell in both valves. The phosphatic shell includes at least two types of cylindrical structures: (1) slender columns identical with the columns of acrotretoid brachiopods and (2) relatively thicker tubes which may be open to the exterior surface and have internal striations (on the ventral pseudointerarea). The striations are most likely imprints of microvilli and these tubes can be inferred to have contained setae. The thinner linguliform columns and thicker setigerous striated tubes are considered to be homologous with identical structures in the sellate and mitral sclerites of the problematic Micrina, which has been identified as a probable primitive stem group of the Brachiopoda. Mickwitzia represents a more derived member of the stem group Brachiopoda.

Jurassic rhynchonellide brachiopods from the Jordan Valley are herein revised and new taxa are added to the faunal list. In this study of Jurassic rhynchonellides from Wadi Zarqa, northwestern Jordan, we recognize the following taxa: Eurysites rotundus, Cymatorhynchia quadriplicata, Daghanirhynchia triangulata, D. angulocostata, Pycnoria magna, Schizoria elongata, and Schizoria cf. intermedia. The following new taxa are described: Daghanirhynchia susanae sp. nov. and Amydroptychus markowitzi sp. nov. The Middle Jurassic Mughanniyya Formation of northwest Jordan is dominated by limestone beds. The sedimentary environment is interpreted as neritic, light, and nutrient−rich resulting in high faunal diversity. The high rhynchonellide endemism of this fauna is yet another confirmation of pronounced Middle Jurassic endemism along the southern Tethyan margin of the Ethiopian Province. Brachiopods of the Jordanian Mughanniyya Formation can be correlated with the fauna of the Aroussiah Formation in Sinai and the Zohar and Matmor formations in Southern Israel.

The new trench Z−17 situated in the Dębnik anticline (Cracow Region, southern Poland) exposed strata representing the Frasnian–Famennian boundary interval. The latest Frasnian crisis interval is characterized by the fauna of Ryocarhynchus tumidus interval consisting of the nominal species, Barroisella campbelli, Biernatella polonica, and representives of Lingulipora, Athyris, ?Retichonetes, Longispina, Cyrtospirifer and Warrenella. The first brachiopods that appears immediately above the F–F boundary in the survival interval include the unidentified rhipidomellid, Praewaagenoconcha cf. speciosa, and Pampoecilorhynchus geniculatus sp. nov. The fauna in the succeeding layer is dominated by P. geniculatus and Cyrtospirifer minor. The earliest Famennian repopulation assemblage consists of representatives of Barroisella, ?Rhyssochonetes, Praewaagenoconcha, Nigerinoplica, Schizophoria, unidentified rhipidomellid, Pampoecilorhynchus geniculatus sp. nov., Chapinella striata sp. nov., Crinisarina angelicoides, and Cyrtospirifer minor. Low diversity and low frequency brachiopod assemblages consisting of stunted specimens characterize the succeeding brachiopod intervals spanning the remainder of the Palmatolepis triangularis Zone. Basinal dysoxia prevailed in the region for the duration of Pa. triangularis Zone. Resumption of aerobic bottom−water conditions is marked by the appearance of brachiopods of the Dmitria gibbosa interval (Pa. crepida Zone). Resumption of favorable environmental conditions during the recovery interval is marked by an increase in brachiopod diversity recording the beginning of a strong post−extinction rediversification of the fauna.

Lingulate brachiopods from chalcedonites of Tremadoc age are redescribed based on new material from the Holy Cross Mountains, Poland. The fauna includes 18 species, of which Elliptoglossa polonica and Siphonotretella popovi are new. The enigmatic Orbiculoidea? subovalis Biernat is redescribed as a species of the recently erected aberrant paterulids Diencobolus Holmer, Popov, Koneva, and Bassett. The fauna includes also Acrotreta dissimilis (Biernat), ?Ditreta dividua Biernat, Semitreta maior Biernat, Eurytreta minor Biernat, Mamatia retracta (Popov), Orbithele ceratopygarum (Brøgger), Siphonobolus uralensis (Lermontova), Alichovia analogica Biernat, Pomeraniotreta sp., Akmolina sp., Rowellella sp., Acanthambonia sp. A, Acanthambonia? sp. B, Leptembolon cf. lingulaeformis (Mickwitz), and the earliest known species of Eoconulus. Most of the recorded lingulate species are endemic, but a significant number are now known also from eastern Kazakhstan and the South Urals, as well as from the Tremadoc of Sweden and Norway.

A medium−diversity fauna of late Ordovician rhynchonelliformean brachiopods occurs in the Tauken Formation (upper Caradoc–lowermost Ashgill) of north Central Kazakhstan.It demonstrates close similarity to the approximately contemporaneous faunas characteristic of shallow clastic shelves (BA 2–3) of the Chingiz and Chu−Ili ranges (both in Kazakhstan) and South China, but is characterized by a high proportion of endemic new species, including Tetraphalerella bestiubensis sp.nov., Glyptomena kaskolica sp.nov., Dinorthis taukensis sp.nov., Rhynchotrema seletensis sp.nov., and Nalivkinia (Pronalivkinia)zvontsovisp.nov.The abundance of Rhynchotrema is somewhat unusual by comparison with faunas from other Kazakhstanian terranes, where rhynchonellides of the family Ancistrorhynchidae are usually dominant in near−shore biofacies.The occurrence of the atrypides Sulcatospira and early Nalivkinia demonstrates a clear biogeographical linkage with approximately contemporaneous faunas of South China.

In the classic section across the Silurian–Devonian boundary at Dnistrove (Podolia, Ukraine) the brachiopod fauna has never been studied in detail. This paper presents results of research on brachiopods from this important locality and time interval. Bed−by−bed collecting has enabled the detailed distribution of brachiopod taxa through the boundary beds to be revealed. Generally, the reference section at Dnistrove yields rather scarce but often well preserved brachiopods. Dayia bohemica and Dnestrina gutta can be regarded as characteristic species for the uppermost Silurian. A relatively high−diversity but low−abundance brachiopod fauna occurs in the lowest 1.8 m of the earliest Devonian. Only three forms have been found to cross the Silurian–Devonian boundary: the strophomenide Plectodonta (Plectodonta) mariae pantherae subsp. nov., the atrypide Gracianella (Sublepida) paulula sp. nov., and the spiriferide Howellella (Howellella) latisinuata. A relatively narrow brachiopod−rich interval at 5.5 m above the Silurian–Devonian boundary yields 16 brachiopod species which probably indicate a setting near the lower limit of the photic zone equivalent to the Benthic Assemblage 3–4 boundary. Two new species and one new subspecies are described: Skenidioides tatyanae, Plectodonta (Plectodonta) mariae pantherae, and Gracianella (Sublepida) paulula.

Epeiric seas covered the east and west parts of the old craton of Baltica in the Silurian and brachiopods formed a major part of the benthic macrofauna throughout Silurian times (Llandovery to Pridoli). The orders Strophomenida and Orthotetida are conspicuous components of the brachiopod fauna, and thus the genera and species of the superfamilies Plectambonitoidea, Strophomenoidea, and Chilidiopsoidea, which occur in the Silurian of Baltica are reviewed and reidentified in turn, and their individual distributions are assessed within the numerous boreholes of the East Baltic, particularly Lithuania, and attributed to benthic assemblages. The commonest plectambonitoids are Eoplectodonta (Eoplectodonta) (6 species), Leangella (2 species), and Jonesea (2 species); rarer forms include Aegiria and Eoplectodonta (Ygerodiscus), for which the new species E. (Y.) bella is erected from the Lithuanian Wenlock. Eight strophomenoid families occur; the rare Leptaenoideidae only in Gotland (Leptaenoidea, Liljevallia). Strophomenidae are represented by Katastrophomena (4 species), and Pentlandina (2 species); Bellimurina (Cyphomenoidea) is only from Oslo and Gotland. Rafinesquinidae include widespread Leptaena (at least 11 species) and Lepidoleptaena (2 species) with Scamnomena and Crassitestella known only from Gotland and Oslo. In the Amphistrophiidae Amphistrophia is widespread, and Eoamphistrophia, Eocymostrophia, and Mesodouvillina are rare. In the Leptostrophiidae Mesoleptostrophia, Brachyprion, and Protomegastrophia are common, but Eomegastrophia, Eostropheodonta, Erinostrophia, and Palaeoleptostrophia are only recorded from the west in the Baltica Silurian. In the Eopholidostrophidae, Mesopholidostrophia is common and Eopholidostrophia rare, and within the Shaleriidae the genus Shaleria is revised and found to be the only genus within the family Shaleriidae and to contain three subgenera, S. (Shaleria), S. (Shaleriella) and S. (Janiomya). In the Strophonellidae Strophonella was widespread and Eostrophonella rare. Within the Orthotetoidea, Coolinia and Morinorhynchus(with the new Ludlow and Pridoli species M. rubeli from the Lithuanian boreholes erected) are common, and Fardenia, Saughina, and Valdaria again only known from the west Baltic. Most of the genera and many of the speciesreviewed were very widespread and many found in the adjacent Avalonia and Laurentia: a few were even more cosmopolitan.

A new discinoid brachiopod Gigadiscina gen. nov., with the type species G. lessardi sp. nov., is described from the Lower Devonian (Siegenian) of the Tamesna Basin (South Ahaggar Massif, South Algeria). It is characterised by large size and convexo−planar profile of the shell, with a subcentral pedicle foramen. Micro−ornament is typically discinoid, with small circular pits in radial rows on the post−larval shell surface. Related species of Malvinokaffric Realm origin from South Africa, Falkland Islands, Antarctica, South America, and Libya are reviewed, including the poorly known Discina anomala from the Lower Devonian of Germany. The giant size and convexo−planar shells of these discinoids, remarkably similar to recent limpets, are interpreted as adaptation to a habitat in proximity of sandy and gravel beaches in a high−energy environment. Most likely, the conical dorsal valve suppressed drag in turbulent waters, whereas fixation of shell by large, sucker−like pedicle eliminated peeling from the substrate.

The study presents the first record of Early Oligocene brachiopods from the Lower Red Formation of the Isfahan Province, Central Iran. The assemblage comprises six brachiopod taxa, belonging to five genera, Novocrania Lee and Brunton, Thecidellina Thomson, Argyrotheca Dall, Joania Álvarez, Brunton and Long, and Platidia Costa. Two species are described as new, Thecidellina persica sp. nov. and Argyrotheca ramshehensis sp. nov. The discovery of Thecidellina in Iran is the first confirmed occurrence of this genus in Oligocene deposits, filling the gap between known Eocene and Miocene occurrences. At the species level, the brachiopods investigated here show no affinity to those from the Lower Miocene Qom Formation.

This paper describes fourteen brachiopod species in eleven genera from the Late Permian Wuchiapingian Coal Series (Lungtan Formation) of South China. Of these, the shell bed fauna from the basal Lungtan Formation is interpreted to represent the onset of the recovery of shelly faunas in the aftermath of the Guadalupian/Lopingian (G/L) mass extinction in South China. The post−extinction brachiopod faunas in the Wuchiapingian are characterized by the presence of numerous Lazarus taxa, survivors, and newly originating taxa. These elements capable of adapting their life habits were relatively more resistant to the G/L crisis. The post−extinction faunas, including survivors and the elements originating in the recovery period, have no life habit preference, but they were all adapted to a variety of newly vacated niches in the Late Permian oceans. Two new species, Meekella beipeiensis and Niutoushania chongqingensis, are described, and two Chinese genera, Niutoushania and Chengxianoproductus, are emended based on re−examination of the type specimens and new topotype materials from the Lungtan Formation.

A newly discovered silicified brachiopod interval from the Upper Member of the Guanling Formation (Late Anisian, Middle Triassic) in Guizhou Province (South China) is described for the first time. The most remarkable feature of this brachiopod assemblage, besides the very good preservation, is the very low taxonomic evenness and diversity. This impoverished, low diversity/high density assemblage is represented by more than 700 recovered specimens belonging to three species within two spiriferinid genera (Pseudospiriferina multicostata, P. pinguis, and Punctospirella fragilis). It is characterized by the overwhelming abundance of an endemic spiriferinid species, P. multicostata, which contributes to more than 90% of the community. Silicified valves of P. multicostata and Punctospirella fragilis allow detailed descriptions of the internal morphology based on direct observation. Brachiopod paleoecology, assessed by considering host−rock lithology, shell disarticulation, and shell size suggests that this endemic brachiopod fauna represents a favourable niche for development of dense brachiopod−dominated communities, i.e., high energy, hard substrate, nutrient rich environment.

The last representatives of the order Atrypida on the southern flank of the Dinant Synclinorium (Vaulx-Nismes area) in Belgium belong to Costatrypa, Spinatrypa, Spinatrypina (?Spinatrypina), Spinatrypina (Exatrypa), Iowatrypa, ?Waiotrypa, Desquamatia (Desquamatia) and Desquamatia (?Seratrypa). Among the thirteen described taxa, five are new: Spinatrypa tumuli sp. n., Iowatrypa circuitionis sp. n., ?Waiotrypa pluvia sp. n., Desquamatia (Desquamatia) quieta sp. n. and Desquamatia (?Seratrypa) derelicta sp. n. Supposed lissatrypid 'Glassia drevermanni' Maillieux, 1936 from the late Frasnian Matagne shales is assigned to the Rhynchonellida. On the southern flank of the Dinant Synclinorium and in the Philippeville Massif, the Atrypida become extinct in the Palmatolepis rhenana Zone, significantly below the Frasnian-Famennian (F-F) boundary. Their extinction coincides with the first appearance of the green and black shales of the late Frasnian Matagne Formation, recording a transgressive-hypoxic event. Based on conodont data, this event takes place earlier on the southern flank of the Dinant Synclinorium than in the Philippeville Massif.

The genus Dzieduszyckia is especially well represented and diverse in the Famennian strata of the Middle Atlas, Morocco. In this paper we re−study and re−illustrate the rich collection of Dzieduszyckia from Morocco, described by Henri and Genevive Termier, and originally referred to Halorella or Eoperegrinella. New data on the internal shell structure of D. crassicostata, D. intermedia, and D. tenuicostata indicate great intraspecific variability in morphology. The structure of crura of three studied species demonstrates that subfamily Dzieduszyckiinae is better placed within the family Halorellidae, instead of Peregrinellidae. Type specimens (lectotypes) of the three species were also selected. An analysis of the stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen of the shell material of Dzieduszyckia and carbonate sediment was used to investigate the presumed chemosynthetic nature of its paleoenvironments. The analyses of the Moroccan and Polish material do not show any signature of unusual environmental conditions: they fall in the range of the mean values of δ¹³C for the Late Devonian.

Two new rhynchonelliformean brachiopods, Neumania paucicostata sp. nov. and Leoniorthis robusta gen. et sp. nov., are described from the Billingen and Volkhov stages (Lower–Middle Ordovician: Arenig) of the Baltic–Ladoga Klint area. All specimens were washed out from unconsolidated sediments, and were sampled in Tallin, Estonia, and at three localities in St. Petersburg district, Russia. Numerous specimens were found in a large mud mound, the lower part of which is within the Baltoniodus triangularis conodont Zone, otherwise usually missing in this area. L. robusta is here assigned to the family Orthidae.

The brachiopod fauna of the Middle Ordovician (upper Darriwilian) Shihtzupu Formation in the Weixin area, northeastern Yunnan Province, southwestern China, comprises 16 genera and 18 species, including one new genus (Halirhachis) and five new species (Glyptorthis sarcina, Protoskenidioides weixinensis, Halirhachis leonina, Leptellina spatiosa, and Leptestiina veturna). Cluster and principal component analyses of the latest Arenigian–mid−Caradocian faunas of the Upper Yangtze Platform with selected faunas of similar age from other palaeoplates or terranes indicate that the Weixin brachiopods have closest faunal affinities to those of the typical Shihtzupu Formation in Guizhou Province and the Naungkangyi Group of Burma (Myanmar). During latest Arenigian–mid−Caradocian times, the brachiopods of the Upper Yangtze Platform, Sibumasu, and Chu−Ili palaeogeographical regions constituted a distinct faunal province, characterized by a large number of endemic taxa as well as regionally widespread genera such as Saucrorthis, Martellia, and Yangtzeella. This brachiopod faunal province has very low similarity coefficients with the coeval brachiopod faunas of Laurentia and Avalonia.

The cyrtospiriferids are among the most important fossils in the Frasnian strata of the East European Platform (EEP). During the Early Frasnian (Palmatolepis falsiovalis Zone) the numerous and morphologically distinct Uchtospiriferinae, accompanied by very scarce Cyrtospiriferinae, are known from South Timan. The mass appearance of cyrtospiriferins on the platform at the beginning of the Middle Frasnian is linked with significant sea−level rise of Devonian Transgression−Regression (T−R) cycle IIc. At that interval these brachiopods attain their highest diversity of the entire Frasnian. The Early Frasnian type species of the genus Uchtospirifer is here revised, and subfamily Uchtospiriferinae re−established. Cyrtospirifer schelonicus, C. rudkinensis, C. mylaensis sp. nov., and C. tenticulum are described from the Middle Frasnian of NW and central regions of EEP and Middle Timan.

The verneuiliid brachiopod Changshunella yangi gen. et sp. nov. is described from the Early Carboniferous Muhua Formation of Guizhou, China. This rather unusual form is characterized by having very small shell dimensions (2.6–4 mm in length), a very high flat procline ventral interarea, and by having three prominent plications on both valves that are arranged in opposed folding; the last feature is characteristic for the family Verneuiliidae. We suggest that the family has been derived from an offshoot of the stock that produced the superfamilies Spiriferoidea, Paeckelmanelloidea, and Brachythyridoidea by developing opposed folding and loss of dental plates or dental adminicula as exemplified by Verneuilia and Changshunella gen. nov.

Taxonomic diversity of NW Caucasus brachiopods changed cyclically in the Early–Middle Jurassic. Diversifications took place in the Late Sinemurian–Early Pliensbachian, Middle–Late Toarcian and Late Aalenian–Early Bajocian, while diversity decreases occured in Late Pliensbachian–Early Toarcian, Early Aalenian and Late Bajocian. Outstanding diversity decline in the Late Pliensbachian–Early Toarcian corresponds to a global mass extinction interval, whose peak has been documented in the Early Toarcian. Similar diversity changes of brachiopods are observed in other Tethyan regions, including the well−studied Bakony Mountains, although in NW Caucasus the recovery after demise have begun earlier. The causes of Pl−To mass extinction in the studied region are enigmatic. Probably, it could be linked to anoxia, but its correspondence to the beginning of transgression is not coincident with the global record, so eustatic causes seem to be doubtful for this region.

A new genus Crassirensselaeria (Terebratulida, Rhenorensselaeriidae) from the Siegenian (middle Lower Devonian) of the Rheinisches Schiefergebirge (= Rhenish Slate Mountains, Germany) with the type−species Crassirensselaeria crassicosta is erected. Exceptionally well−preserved material of this taxon has recently been obtained from a temporary outcrop at an ICE (= InterCityExpress) railway construction site close to Aegidienberg near Bonn. As representatives of Crassirensselaeria have hitherto been included into the terebratulid genus Rhenorensselaeria; they are compared with the two Lower Devonian species of that genus from the Rheinisches Schiefergebirge: Rhenorensselaeria strigiceps and Rh. demerathia. Crassirensselaeria is chiefly distinguished from these by more globular shells, the presence of very strong plications, long and strong dental plates, different ventral muscle field, and thickened cardinalia. Representatives of the new genus are excellent index fossils for the Siegenian of the Rheinisches Schiefergebirge, even in deposits of restricted−marine and probably brackish environments. New material of articulated specimens in life position shows that both rhenorensselaeriid genera lived in clusters with the longitudinal axes of the shells oriented steep or perpendicular to the seafloor. The new genus is abundant in the Rheinisches Schiefergebirge (Germany) and the northern Ardennes (Belgium), it also occurs in the Hrubý Jeseník Mountains (Czech Republic). Its occurrence in Cornwall (Great Britain), however, is still questionable.

A new species of the orthide brachiopod genus Kinnella is described from the Upper Member of the Georgian Bay Formation (Upper Ordovician) of Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada. This species, herein designated as Kinnella laurentiana sp. nov., occurs in strata of Richmondian (mid−Ashgill; Katian) age, most likely correlative with the eastern North American Dicellograptus complanatus Zone. This occurrence extends the known stratigraphic range of Kinnella downward considerably from its previously inferred basal Hirnantian inception. The new species is characterized by a moderately convex dorsal valve and an apsacline ventral interarea rarely approaching catacline. This is the third reported occurrence of Kinnella in North America, and is the only species known to have inhabited the epicontinental seas of Laurentia. The associated benthic shelly fauna indicates a depositional environment within fair weather wave base (BA 2). The ancestry of Kinnella and this species appears most likely to lie among older, morphologically similar members of the Draboviidae which were seemingly confined to higher latitude faunal provinces prior to the Hirnantian glacial event. Thus, the mid−Ashgill occurrence of Kinnella laurentiana in the palaeotropically located Manitoulin Island region suggests the mixing of a probable cooler water taxon with the warmer water epicontinental shelly fauna of Laurentia, as well as a possible earlier episode of low−latitude oceanic cooling. Cluster analysis of Kinnella−bearing brachiopod faunas reveals a sharp differentiation between the K. laurentiana−associated brachiopod fauna and all other known (Hirnantian–lower Rhuddanian) occurrences mainly represented by the type species K. kielanae.

Analysis of the internal structure carried out on several representative genera of the brachiopod family Zeilleriidae from the Lower Jurassic of the Betic Ranges (SE Spain), complemented with specimens from nearby domains such as the Iberian Range and Lusitanian Basin, has enabled to propose a model for discrimination of genera based on the relative position of the crural bases with respect to the hinge plates. This particular feature has been analysed in the genera Zeilleria, Bakonyithyris, Securina, Neozeilleria, Cincta, Aulacothyris, and Plesiothyris, revealing three different basic patterns of crural bases arrangement: a Zeilleria-type, with crural bases distinctly arising from the ventral side of the hinge plates; a Securina-type, with crural bases originating transversally to the hinge plates and dorsally prominent; and a Bakonyithyris-type, intermediate between both previous patterns.

This paper describes 37 species (4 new) belonging to 27 genera (1 new), 14 families, and 6 orders (Lingulida, Craniida, Strophomenida, Productida, Orthotetida, and Orthida) of silicified brachiopods from the middle Tournaisian (Mississippian, lower Carboniferous) of the vicinity of Gedongguan and Muhua villages (southern China). All specimens come from acid etching of detrital and oolitic limestone lenses scattered within grey to black laminated basinal micrite and marl of the Muhua Formation. The formation, which attains about 1–10 meters in thickness, is dated to the Siphonodella crenulata Zone. More than 10,000 silicified brachiopod specimens belonging to about 70 species were recovered from over 900 kg of the sampled limestone lenses, the most diverse brachiopod fauna of that age. The characteristic feature of the studied material is the prevailing disarticulation and fragmentation of skeletal parts due to their down slope transportation into a deeper water environment. Within Lingulida, one linguloid and one discinoid species are described. Craniida are represented by five species including Nematocrania pilea sp. nov. Strophomenida are represented by fragmentarily preserved specimens belonging to one species. The most diverse are Productida, which are represented by 7 chonetidine and 12 productidine species; new are Subglobosochonetes gedongguanensis sp. nov. and Globosochonetes gracilis sp. nov. New data on morphology of larval stage of Argentiproductus margaritaceus and its mode of attachment are presented. Orthotetida is represented by 5 species including Lamellispina spinosa gen. et sp. nov. Orthida is represented by 3, mostly cosmopolitan species. This study of a middle Tournaisian brachiopod fauna from Muhua, together with published data on the Mississippian brachiopods from other regions of South China, allow to study the Devonian–Carboniferous biotic crisis and post−crisis recovery.

Early Middle Cambrian (Amgian) lingulate brachiopods from the Tarbagatay Range in eastern Kazakhstan represent mostly endemic taxa, which may suggest that the Tarbagatay Range was relatively isolated from adjacent terranes during that time; only Kleithriatreta indicate similarity with the Australian part of Gondwana, as well as with the south and central Kazakhstanian terranes. Late Middle Cambrian (Mayan) taxa from the same area are mostly cosmopolitan. Kostjubella relaxata gen. et sp. n., Prototreta (?) dolosa sp. n. and Stilpnotreta galinae sp. n. are proposed.

A new atrypid genus Heckerella from early Frasnian (Palmatolepis transitans Zone) of northwestern East European Platform is proposed. It includes only Heckerella heckeri, originally referred to Anatrypa. The new genus is characterised by weakly paraplicate anterior commissure, well-developed carina on the ventral valve, sulcus on the dorsal valve and coarser radial ornament. Heckerella has restricted geographic distribution in northwestern Russia, Latvia, northeastern Lithuania where it forms high-density associations with Pseudoatrypa velikaya.
Poważne zmiany ekosystemowe we wczesnym franie spowodowały spadek zróżnicowania taksonomicznego wśród atrypidów, ale przedstawiciele tej grupy pozostali do końca franu ważnym składnikem niektórych zespołów płytkowodnych ramienionogów. Opisany w niniejszej pracy nowy rodzaj Heckerella należy do ostatnich przedstawicieli rządu Atrypida. Jedyny znany gatunek tego rodzaju, H. heckeri (Nalivkin, 1941) pochodzi z wczesnego franu (poziom Palmatolepis transitans) późnocno-zachodnich rejonów Platformy Wschodnioeuropejskiej i pierwotnie został zaliczony do rodzaju Anatrypa Nalivkin, 1939. Od tego ostatniego rodzaju Heckerella gen. n. różni się słabo wyrażoną komisurą typu "paraplicate", dobrze rozwiniętą kariną na skorupce nóżkowej i grubymi żebrami. Nowy rodzaj, chociaż podobny do późnofrańskiej Gibberosatrypa Markovskii & Rzonsnitskaya, 1998, różni się od niej bardziej wyciągniętym (wydłużonym) brzegiem zawiasowym, obecnośocią wyraźniejszej ośrodkowej zatoki na skorupce grzbietowej i wąskimi, wysokimi żebrami.

Opis:
A new species of the poorly known lingulate brachiopod Schizobolus is described from the Famennian (Upper Devonian) of Poland. S. polonicus sp. n. has a triangular pedicle notch and a small listrium, indicating that it belongs to the Trematidae within the superfamily Discinoidea. S. polonicus retains some linguloid features, such as a linguloid-like 'pedicle groove' and a V-shaped imprint of the pedicle nerve. The disturbance band, which occurs in the apical part of the larval shell, probably delimits two stages of growth, namely pre-larval (embryonic?) and larval, or, early-larval and late-larval. S. polonicus is the youngest member of the genus, and of the family Trematidae. Five incompletely preserved discinids from the Famennian of Łagów are described as Trematidae gen. et sp. indet.
Bezzawiasowy ramienionóg Schizobolus jest niedostatecznie znanym rodzajem głównie ze względu na zły stan zachowania typowego gaunku S. concentricus z środkowego dewonu Tennessee (USA). Opisane w niniejszej pracy okazy z famenu (górny dewon) Dębnika (region krakowski) i Jabłonnej (Góry Świętokrzyskie) zostały zaliczone do nowego gatunku Schizobolus polonicus sp. n. Gatunek ten charakteryzuje trójkątne wycięcie na nóżkę w skorupce brzusznej, które jest częściowo zakryte słabo zachowującą się, delikatną płytką (listrium). U S. polonicus występuje też - charakterystyczny dla linguloidów - rowek nóżkowy oraz V-kształtny odcisk nerwu nóżkowego w skorupce brzusznej. Okazy z Polski charakteryzuje ponadto występowanie dobrze wykształconego stadium larwalnego muszli. Jest on nieco poprzecznie owalny w zarysie i osiąga przeciętnie 0,42 mm długości. Muszla larwalna jest wyraźnie wyodrębniona z tyłu i z boków, natomiast w części przedniej oddziela ją od reszty muszli jedynie silniej zaznaczona linia przyrostowa. Z zewnątrz muszla larwalna pokryta jest delikatnymi koncentrycznymi liniami przyrostowymi, choć w wyjątkowych przypadkach zachowuje się również odcisk struktury periostrakum (Fig. 3M, N). W części apikalnej muszli larwalnej daje się zaobserwować występowanie koncentrycznego pierścienia przyrostowego (zaburzenie wzrostowe), które wyodrębnia w rezultacie najwcześniejsze stadium wzrostowe muszli. Ten region muszli larwalnej osiąga 0,15-0,20 mm szerokości. Świadczy on, że w rozwoju ontogenetycznym dewońskich trematidów występowało zróżnicowanie na stadium wczesno- i późnolarwalne, lub też na stadium emrionalne (protegulum) i larwalne (u współczesnych dyscinidów takie zróżnicowanie w obrębie muszli larwalnej nie wystepuje). Z famenu Łagowa opisano też pięć silnie ornamentowanych koncentrycznie skorupek reprezentujących zapewne nowy rodzaj z rodziny Trematidae; zbyt skąpy materiał nie pozwala jednak na pełne zdefiniowanie taksonomiczne tej formy.

In South China latest Frasnian (Palmatolepis linguiformis Zone) the representatives of the order Atrypida (Brachiopoda) are most common in central Hunan Province. They are relatively rare in other parts of South China due to unfavourable ecologic conditions. Unlike most previously reported sections, including some sections in South China, the four Frasnian-Famennian (F-F) boundary sections examined here do not show any evidence for black shale. Atrypids are abundant and relatively diverse about 15 to 20 m below the F-F boundary (six species), and very rare about 1-2 m below the boundary (with only two species). It seems that the disappearance of most atrypids occurred well before the F-F boundary. Nine species (including Iowatrypa? qidongensis sp. n.), assigned to six genera, are discussed and described.

The brachiopod fauna of the Middle-Late Devonian cratonic carbonate platform deposits of the Iowa Basin, central North America, contains twenty species of the order Atrypida, some of which are types for widespread genera common in Middle and Late Devonian faunas. The latest Givetian-early Frasnian deposits yield a diverse fauna consisting of ten species (two new) included in Desquamatia (Independatrypa), D. (Seratrypa), Pseudoatrypa, Radiatrypa, Spinatrypa (Spinatrypa) and Spinatrypina (Exatrypa). Many of these forms occur in, or are closely similar to species known from, coeval faunas of central and western Canada. Middle Frasnian deposits of northern Iowa contain two species included in Spinatrypa (S.) and Pseudoatrypa, both of which are new. Late Frasnian strata of the Iowa Basin yield eight species included in Costatrypa, Iowatrypa, Pseudoatrypa, and Spinatrypa (Spinatrypa), some of which are widespread in other subtropical and tropical faunas of the western US and western Canada. The taxa Pseudoatrypa witzkei sp. n., Spinatrypa (S.) bunkeri sp. n., Spinatrypa (S.) thompsoni sp. n., and Spinatrypina (Exatrypa) johnsoni sp. n. are proposed. Pseudoatrypa? sp. from the very late Frasnian of southern New Mexico is also illustrated.

A new rhynchonellide brachiopod genus Antulanella is erected based on the examination of the external and internal morphologies and shell microstructure of “Rhynchonella pancici”, a common species in the Barremian shallow−water limestones of the Carpatho−Balkanides of eastern Serbia. The new genus is assigned to the subfamily Viarhynchiinae, family Tetrarhynchiidae. The shell of Antulanella is small to rarely medium−sized, subglobose, subcircular, fully costate, with hypothyrid rimmed foramen. The dorsal euseptoidum is much reduced. The dental plates are thin, ventrally divergent. The hinge plates are straight to ventrally convex. The crura possess widened distal ends, rarely raduliform or canaliform. The shell is composed of two calcitic layers. The secondary layer is fine fibrous, homogeneous built up of predominantly anisometric anvil−like fibres. Although data on the shell microstructure of post−Palaeozoic rhynchonellides are still incomplete, it is possible to distinguish two types of secondary layer: (i) fine fibrous typical of the superfamilies Rhynchonelloidea and Hemithiridoidea and (ii) coarse fibrous typical of the superfamilies Pugnacoidea, Wellerelloidea, and Norelloidea. The new genus Antulanella has a fine fibrous microstructure of the secondary layer, which is consistent with its allocation in the Hemithiridoidea. Antulanella pancici occurs in association with other brachiopods showing strong Peritethyan affinity and close resemblance to the Jura fauna (= Subtethyan fauna).

The first appearance of the brachiopod Cyrtospirifer and related forms in the Late Devonian of South China significantly postdates the beginning of the Frasnian and the entry of the group in other parts of the world. Scattered data from different sections suggest that its first entry, associated with the emergence of other plicate spiriferids, such as theodossid and conispiriferid brachiopods, was late in the Middle Frasnian. At the same time, many rhynchonellids disappeared or became extinct locally in South China. This brachiopod faunal overturn near the Palmatolepis punctata–Early Pa. hassi zonal boundary is the most significant event in the Early–Middle Frasnian of South China, characterized by about a 35% loss of existing species and the flourishing of the plicate spiriferids, which was coeval with the end of a major biogeochemical perturbation recently recognized in the Pa. punctata Zone. By contrast, atrypid brachiopods do not seem to show any significant diversity change. The brachiopod faunal change was probably related to a (local?) transgressive event in South China, which also brought new pelagic faunas northwards into some intra−shelf deeper water areas, such as the Shetianqiao area in central Hunan Province. Fifteen brachiopod species are described and illustrated, which include some taxa that are first recorded or recognized in South China, e.g., the spiriferid Pyramidaspirifer, which is now known from both North America and South China. One new species, Desquamatia qiziqiaoensis, is erected.
