Boredom is a very interesting issue that persists in our contemporary day and age. It is not easy to define it in a positive sense (by listing its properties, which constitute a presence of something, rather than a lack of something), as it has vastly differentiated causes and symptoms. The paper presents a variety of types of boredom identified from various points of view in the humanities and social sciences. According to the author, two of these typologies are particularly convincing. The first introduces the division into the state and a trait of boredom, while the latter – describing only the state of boredom in terms of arousal and affect – postulates the existence of neutral, calibrating, searching, reactant and apathetic boredom. These typologies have been juxtaposed with others, with their similarities and differences identified and indicated.

The present study employed an interpretive approach to investigate individual learners’ viewpoints on foreign language learning boredom (FLLB). To this aim, a Q method, which shares features of both qualitative and quantitative research approaches, was used to explore 37 Iranian English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ perceptions of potential sources of boredom in the classroom. Nonprobability purposeful sampling was used to select participants from two private language institutes in Mashhad, Iran. A hybrid-type Q sampling was employed to produce 40 statements related to the sources of FLLB. Using PQ Method, an exclusive statistical package for Q methodology, the Q sorts were intercorrelated and factor-analyzed. Three factors were extracted and rotated using varimax rotation and hand adjustment. Factor arrays and qualitative analyses were utilized to find and interpret three different accounts of FLLB. The three factors showed that the students held three divergent prototypical points of view about the sources of boredom experienced in EFL learning in class: (a) teacher-induced boredom, (b) student-induced boredom, and (c) activity-induced boredom. The findings also showed that different learner prototypes experience FLLB distinctly. Thus teachers should consider using different strategies to prevent or reduce this negative emotion in the context of L2 learning since otherwise this process could be impeded.

The article examines the notion of bovarism which can be seen in the work of the most outstanding Russian writers of the second half of the 19th century, for example Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Anton Chekhov. It seems that the source of bovaristic attitude, which is culturally, socially and psychologically motivated, is the extremity of the Russian character prone to self-sacrifice, offering and suffering, as well as cruelty and sadism. A Russian variant of bovarism is boredom and melancholy.

Despite a lot of scientific research and study, sexual education issues as an element of formal education are still considered to be a controversial subject. Those challenges, dilemmas, controversies or difficulties relate to many areas, connected both with form and organization of classes, teachers, and also (at more general level) with some ministerial indications or school management. All the above matters directly influence what sexual education classes look like and what the students’ experience is. It is disturbing that the sexual education subject at school was generally considered to be boring according to the respondents. Therefore, it has been decided to analyze why classes which are non-obligatory but important and wanted by students are considered boring and out of touch with life.

Opis:
Although boredom is among the most frequently experienced academic emotions, it has received surprisingly little attention from L2 researchers and teachers. This paper aims to discuss and evaluate the existing quantitative and qualitative instruments that can be used for examining boredom in practical English classes. It will start with a brief overview of the causes and manifestations of boredom in the language classroom. This will be followed by the presentation of the methodology of three empirical studies which will serve as a basis for highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the data collection tools employed. Finally, an attempt will be made to delineate future research directions in the study of boredom in the L2 classroom and to illuminate the methodological choices available to researchers in this respect.

This paper focuses on examining the differences between boredom as experienced in learning the L2 and the L3. Its first part provides a theoretical background including the definition, causes of boredom and an overview of research findings, whereas the second part approaches boredom from an empirical perspective and as such it is devoted to the discussion of the results obtained from a mixed methods study conducted by the present authors on four university students of English. The collected data enabled the authors to identify the factors responsible for experiencing boredom in these two distinct language learning contexts.

This paper asserts that the growing expansion of the micro realm of social activity calls for the exploration of everyday experience, seen as ranging from the most extraordinary to the most ordinary. The paper focuses on two constitutive features of the ordinary type of experience, namely, normality and boredom. It conceptualizes normality as an outcome of people’s potential to construct meaning of their ordinary experiences and boredom as a state signaling our inability to realize this desire. Both types of ordinary experience are in the core of everyday life and thus their consequences can be detrimental to the quality of social life. This paper’s discussion of normality and boredom includes both sociological and literary works where these two phenomena find their rich expression.

Ponadto przeanalizowano związek subiektywnej percepcji czasu z odczuwaniem nudy. W ramach dwóch wspomnianych koncepcji określono, na podstawie badań własnych, empiryczne zależności pomiędzy czasem psychologicznym a nudą. Uzyskane wyniki należy rozpatrywać w odniesieniu do jakości życia. oraz Shelley A. Fahlman, Kimberley B. Mercer-Lynn, Davida B. Flory i Johna D. Eastwooda, traktującą o nudzie. Ponadto przeanalizowano związek subiektywnej percepcji czasu z odczuwaniem nudy. W ramach dwóch wspomnianych koncepcji określono, na podstawie badań własnych, empiryczne zależności pomiędzy czasem psychologicznym a nudą. Uzyskane wyniki należy rozpatrywać w odniesieniu do jakości życia.
The text presents two theoretical concepts: psychological time (by Philip G. Zimbardo and John Boyd) and boredom (by Shelley A. Fahlman, Kimberley B. Mercer-Lynn, David B. Flor and John D. Eastwood). A relationship between subjective perspective of time and feeling of boredom is described. Operating in the framework of the two concepts and basing on own research, the empirical relationship between psychological time and boredom was defined. The results should be analyzed with reference to life quality.

The author of the paper explores two dichotomous phenomena - boredom and entertainment - in Polish prose for children from the period of PRL, basing on the adventure novels written by Edmund Niziurski in the 1960s: Awanturza w Niekłaju (1962) and Siódme wtajemniczenie (1969). Both notions are discussed from the perspective of ethnography, anthropology, and the history of childhood. Referring to Roger Caillois’s concepts of play and games, the researcher analyses the images of transformation of entertainment behaviours as presented by young characters from Niziurski’s novels, and links between the text and social and political reality in Poland of the 1960s. Her findings indicate that, in his writing of this period, Niziurski both withdrew from socrealistic poetics and abandoned the ideological, persuasive function of entertainment for the sake of uninhibited, spontaneous children’s games and play.

The topic of the article is boredom experienced as a condition of chronic monotony and not sufficient simulation that blocks man’s cognitive and creative activity. However, it has also positive aspects, which is also mentioned in the text. The writer discusses the concept of boredom, its types (situational boredom, existential boredom, chronic boredom and boredom caused by surfeit), sources of boredom and some effects of chronic boredom which are important from the pedagogic point of view. The boredom is juxtaposed with curiosity and cognitive fascination, which is the basis of internal motivation connected with an effective creative process. He also notices and shortly presents positive aspects of ordinary boredom and the condition of “dolce far niente”, “sanctified passiveness” as a chance to slow down and contemplate oneself and the world. The conclusion, however, is that the boredom should be perceived as a permanent state of the lack of research attitude.

Although boredom is among the most common academic emotions experienced by students at all possible levels of education, so far it has not received due attention from SLA theorists and researchers. Accordingly, the present paper aims to discuss the concept of boredom from the L2 classroom perspective with a special regard to the university students of English Philology. In the first part the authors provide a definition, present two basic typologies and highlight the causes of boredom followed by a brief overview of research into boredom in educational settings, whereas the second part is intended to approach a phenomenon of boredom on an empirical basis. The authors report on both quantitative and qualitative research findings concerning the intensity of boredom as felt by the subjects during the practical English language classes. First, the numerical results obtained from the Boredom Proneness Scale and correlated to boredom experienced in practical English language classes are referred to. Then the qualitative data gathered from the students’ descriptions of boredom-related situations during the said classes are commented on. Finally, the authors proceed to propose certain L2 classroom boredom-coping options.

The article deals with the problem of boredom in education. The main purpose is to capture logic of misunderstandings between sides of learning processes. The article is organized by following questions: 1) How teachers comprehend phenomenon of boredom in their classroom? 2) Who should be blamed for boredom in education: teachers or pupils? 3) If boredom could have developmental potential? Answering the first question the writer accords with phenomenographical qualitative research procedure of examination meanings of school experiences imparted by pupils and their teachers. Boredom is one of keywords defining meaning of school and one of important issue which causes misunderstandings between pupils and teachers. The second question includes discussion on differentiation between causes of boredom during school-time and pupils' free-time associated with psychological and sociological models of boredom. Psychological model of forced effort completed with analysis of its social conditions is considered as the most valid to capture the problem of responsibility for boredom appearing during school-time. In answer to the third question the writer considers “epidemic of boredom” as a symptom of democratization and popularized presupposition that everyone has a right to fulfill their own life with meanings. To develop this assumption the author uses the analysis of boredom by Walter Benjamin and Martin Heidegger.

The continual monotony and the wandering life of individuals, members of the French society of the Middle Age has been a big concern for the fox folktales tellers. They have focused on the strolls of Renart the fox, hero of Le Roman de Renart, deriving from populous tales of former France. In fact, the fox folktales tellers represent the reign of social anarchy triggered off by the decay of central power and the implementation of an asocial life grounded on the quest and conquest of an uncertain future and desperately marked by anguish and the resort to deceit means to the disdain of human being. Even the knight dignified forfeit of the social honorable and respectable manners in the past, is compelled to a roving, boredom and brutality for survive. This contribution aims to visit this central and worrying question of the Middle Age society to establish the contemporary value and show how it is dozed a potential outline of wandering whose expression comes from the absence of a controlled life and an irresponsibility of any resignation power.

Czy istnieje coś takiego jak nudny rytuał, czy raczej nuda jest afektywnym przeżyciem podmiotu? W artykule autor stawia tezę, że nic – łącznie z posoborowymi obrzędami Kościoła – nie może być z natury nudne. Nuda – lub wyraźniej poddanie się nudzie – jest duchową chorobą późnej nowoczesności. Artykuł wychodzi od analizy zjawiska nudy, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem nudy w jakiejś cyfrowej ekologii. Następnie zwrócono uwagę na symptomy nudy badane przez teoretyków społecznych i kulturowych w ciągu ostatniej dekady, w tym Zygmunta Baumana, Harmuta Rosę i Byung-Chul Hana. Na koniec poddano analizie Ducha liturgii Romano Guardiniego jako dającej lekarstwo na pewien rodzaj antyświątecznej kultury, która jest źródłem nudy w późnej nowoczesności. Nuda nie jest problemem związanym z obrzędem, ale ze świadomością samego człowieka, który nie nauczył się jeszcze uczestniczyć w autentycznej radości aktu kultu.
Is there such a thing as a boring rite, or is boredom instead an affective experience of a subject? This article argues that nothing—including the post-conciliar rites of the Church—can be intrinsically boredom. Rather, boredom—or more clearly the refusal to undergo boredom—is a spiritual sickness of late modernity. The article begins with an analysis of the phenomenon of boredom with a particular focus on boredom in a digital ecology. The article then turns to the symptoms of boredom as examined by social and cultural theorists over the last decade including Zygmunt Bauman, Harmut Rosa, and Byung-Chul Han. Lastly, the article examines Romano Guardini's The Spirit of the Liturgy as providing a medicine against the kind of anti-festive culture that is the source of boredom in late modernity. Boredom is not a problem with a rite but with the self who has not yet learned to participate in the serious playfulness of the act of worship.
