Opis:
The paper describes today’s new situation of art facing antidemocratic processes. The powerful metaphor of Parthenon of books is used, which once was the name of an installation by Marta Minujín presented just after the fall of Argentinian brutal regime in the early eighties and reinstalled again few years ago. The author points that popular “posts” of humanities (postmodernism, postsecularism etc.) need to be replaced by the philosophy of art being after some definite change. The new temporal and public condition of art being after is the result of its dramatic contemporary and future challenges.

The article discusses interactivity and intermediality in the output of the Polish avant-garde artists Franciszka and Stefan Themerson. The author claims that their two-dimensional works created in the 1930s and addressed at children are early examples of interactive strategies activating young readers in search for understanding of the modern world. Non-traditional illustrations, experimental typography and texts far from ‘classical’ literature for children form inseparable verbo-visual entities (named ‘wordgraphy’) where words and images are of equal importance. What happens between the engaged media proves most interesting and most innovative.

The text describes, how the book art corresponds with the transformations of social and cultural life, associated with birth of liquid modernity. The revolution that the book publishing market is going through today will make enormous changes in the perception of book and its form. The volume, which we know, will no longer exist. It seems that e-book will become basic form of book and traditional book will turn to art and something we call artist’s books.

typographic design, the history of book, the art of printing
Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to present the problem of typographic design in the studies on Polish books printed until the 18th century. Although some of the ideas of Polish bibliologists have closely corresponded with new directions in French and Anglo-American bibliography, they have never resulted in such books as: Apparition du livre by Febvre-Martin, Gutenberg Galaxy by McLuhan, Printing Press as an Agent of Change by Eisenstein or Histoire de l’édition française. In Polish book studies, the issue of typography was raised essentially to confirm or establish the provenance of a print or to demonstrate the existence of many variants of an edition. In the second decade of the 20th century, in opposition to the ideas represented e.g. by Jan Ptaśnik, who postulated mainly the examination of historical documents, Kazimierz Piekarski worked out the so-called “typographic method” of book studies, which consisted in the analysis, description and creating the catalogue of printing types and typographic material employed in the examined prints. This method was successfully used in the series Polonia Typographica Saeculi Sedecimi, which Piekarski initialised in 1936. While the idea to evaluate and compare the aesthetic value of production of different printers were present in Polish bibliography, they could not, nevertheless, be realised before the second world war. In the second half of the 20th century researchers focused, among others questions, on: paper, bookbinding, readers, publicity, musical prints, bookselling, history of libraries and printers, but the issue of typographic design was only discussed as an exception. Making an attempt to characterise and estimate the visual aspect of Polish books printed before the end of the 18th century requires difficult study not only in bibliography, but also in the history of literature, culture and art. Works such as: Encyklopedia wiedzy o książce, Słownik pracowników książki polskiej,Drukarze dawnej Polski, a recently published bibliography of books printed by Franciszek Cezary the older, as well as already mentioned Polonia Typographica... and numerous articles (some of them concerning precisely e.g. title-pages or printers’ devices) remain a useful source of knowledge. However, Polish scientific vocabulary in this subject is still deficient and sometimes a researcher could find it indispensable to create a new term him- or herself. The author of this paper had a similar experience during her studies on the typography of prints published in sixteenth-century Cracow by Florian Ungler and Maciej Wirzbięta. The other problem she had to deal with was the creation of an original database, which allowed her to collect, research and present data in a much simpler, faster and more comfortable way. Comparative studies of selected prints published in Cracow in the first and the second half of the 16th century have shown a development of local typography and book design during this period, including changes in book architecture, typographic material and page layout. They also indicated the introduction and perfection of multiple helpful elements of a book, like pagination or foliation, indexes, errata, notes etc., as well as an establishment of some patterns of composition for editions de luxe and “series”. Despite many attempts, including those mentioned in this paper, the issue of typographic design of Polish books printed before the 18th century remains mostly unknown. Simultaneously, the general interest in modern book design in Poland has greatly increased over the last few years and creating the layout of one’s own book has become more and more popular. It is therefore extremely important to study the art of our predecessors and try to understand what they wanted to teach us in their own language of “black-art”.

Księga, dzieło totalne, Mallarme, Perec
Opis:
The article is an attempt to look at the literary concept of the "Book" as a total work of art. The author first analyses the theory of Stéphane Mallarmé, for whom the Book as a "total expansion of the letter" was both a literary and material work, seeking to capture the constantly escaping reality. The endless pursuit of the material realization of the potential of infinity allow us to consider the Book a project that in reality was never intended to be realized and existed in the author's consciousness as a kind of literary myth. In a similar way, we can analyse the works of Georges Perec, who, through the figure of enumeration or the constant obsession of cataloging and classification, also aimed to embrace reality as a whole through literature. As the author argues, what both writers have in common is the desire to create an ideal work of art, whose paradox consists in the fact that it aims to embody what is infinite and to name the what is still unknown.

Opis:
WRITE TO SUSTAIN. Info Man 2 Leszek Brogowski’s article consists of two parts. The first describes briefly the writing by artists published in Éditions Incertain Sens, a French publishing house specializing in books by artists. Although the art of the twentieth century might seem more and more abstract, elitist and remote from everyday affairs, artists in various ways tried to bring it close to life. These efforts are worthy of our attention because they are often an expression of the concept of art being a guardian of life: art as a kind of existential discipline presented in the form of literature, and thus the books. The next part of the article is devoted to the six artists: Laurent Marissal, Bruno Di Rosa, Lefevre Jean Claude, Erik Watier, Hubert Renard, Pascal Le Coq. The title of each section is a quote taken from statements by artists published in different texts. The play, which often saves our lives. I just finished „Pinxit III” (Laurent Marissal, e-mail). With this daily practice, I know that I exist (Bruno Di Rosa in conversation). Constant dithering what preoccupies us, and then – perhaps – depends a person (Lefevre Jean Claude, in one of his texts). Write it ourselves – an American artist and the founder of the Antinomian Press publishing house – tells the story of contemporary art, Ben Kinmont (excerpt about Eric Watier). I write that name, which tell us that it is ours (quote from James Joyce’s Ulysses as the title of a piece on Hubert Renard). Various statements about the double meaning (quoted from Freud as the title of a fragment on Pascal Le Coq). The conclusions of the first part of the article emphasize the relationship between writing practices of artists and the conviction (closer to pragmatism than structuralism, which dominated from the 1960’s to the 980’s) that linguistic practices are directly connected with daily operations and activities; the goal of this article is to analyze the function of language, which links artistic practices.

This paper aims to address and explore the problem of rendering Alasdair Gray’s prose in Polish, by focusing on his works’ extra-narrative elements. It seeks to identify the difficulties and limitations in translating an author of this kind – a writer, but also, and perhaps primarily, an artist, whose texts function as book-objects, relying heavily on artwork as well as typographical experimentation. The analysis, centred on Gray’s Lanark, 1982, Janine and Poor Things, leads to a discussion of the broader question of translating these books in which the actual text is only part of the story.

That text became widespread in Old Russian literature within liturgical books containing passages of the Old Testament. Also the comment of Anastasius Sinaites for Proverbs 9, 1-6 was translated into Old Church Slavonic. Iconographic images of the Wisdom’s banquet scene should be considered as a phenomenon typical of South Slavic wall paintings from the period of fourteenth century. Later on, the discussed motif became popular in Old Russian art and began to appear on the East Slavic icons.

Opis:
This paper discusses a series of illustrations which Edward Okuń created for an unpublished edition of Bolesław Prus’ novel Faraon [The Pharaoh]. The illustrations were commissioned by the publishing house Gebethner und Wolff, however they were never published. The artist was inspired by the authentic relics of Egyptian antiquity (such as the sarcophagus of Khonsu, the Papyrus of Hunefer, the Papyrus of Ani, Tuthmose IV’s chariot, excavations in the tomb of Tui and Jui) which he admired on his trip to Egypt at the beginning of 1914. He used the Antique models in three ways: Firstly, he employed fragments of certain representations, only changing the framing around them. Secondly, he created mixed compositions from fragments of one or more Egyptian scenes. Thirdly, he introduced separate details reconstructed from the Egyptian relics into the scenes he designed from scratch, with no underlying pattern behind, though with certain degree of faithfulness to the Egyptian canon. In one of the illustrations, he also used the Assyrian canon. The illustrations under analysis stay in various kinds of relationship to the literary content of the novel. In some of them, the artistic Egyptian canon is broken in order to better suit the dramatic nature of the scene depicted by Prus. In others, the illustrations seem to keep closer to the Egyptian patterns, to some extent departing from the plot.

Photography emerging from the documentary tradition has continued to evolve over the recent years, nearing the scientific practices applied in the study of the social and community-based dimensions of culture. Photographers conduct experiments in the social space, reflect on the interactions and dependencies that they intentionally create, and construct languages of communication subordinated to the interpersonal relationships in which they operate. As authors of their art-based research, they are in charge of both methodology of analysis (by adapting the tools employed by the humanities and social sciences) and the ways in which their results are presented and included in the social mainstream as artistic interventions, collective practices, and photography publications. Given that the latter are the subject of this article, it focuses on three selected publications and identifies engagement as a central category for methods used by artists to establish a relationship with the studied social reality, influence it, and create knowledge about it. Engagement, in both its versions – as an attempt to have an impact on the studied social reality and as a method of intentional relationship building within a community, carries a significant learning potential, allowing us to look anew at the role of photography in qualitative social research.
