    The aim of this article is to look at the analyses of the body/corporeality carried out by Polish sociologists and at the currently pursued studies in the area. The article presents the dilemmas that the researcher of the body/corporeality faces, mainly due to the nature of the research object, but also resulting from associated methodological difficulties. Secondly, the paper also points at some important empirical omissions – that is, areas or methods of research that have not, so far, gained enough attention of the researchers. Thirdly, a list of recommendations for possible, potentially attractive new fields of exploration for the sociology of the body is presented.

    W artykule podjęta zostaje problematyka marginalizowana w polskiej socjologii, jaką jest wiedza pozadyskursywna i jej transmisja. Punktem wyjścia jest założenie, że oprócz wiedzy, która ma charakter dyskursywny, istnieje również wiedza pozadyskursywna. Ma ona uniwersalny charakter, gdyż jest wykorzystywana na co dzień przez każdego z nas. Ale rzadko staje się ona przedmiotem analiz. Artykuł rozpoczyna się od wskazania przyczyn tej marginalizacji, by następnie uznać sport za obszar adekwatny do badania transmisji pozadyskursywnej wiedzy. Równocześnie podkreślona zostaje przydatność analiz na tym polu dla całej socjologii, bowiem ich celem jest między innymi odpowiedź na pytanie, jakie są granice naszego poznania i jak badać wiedzę pozadyskursywną. Kolejna część artykułu przedstawia koncepcje przyporządkowane dwóm nurtom – skupionym wokół pojęć wiedzy ucieleśnionej i wiedzy praktycznej, które mogą stać się teoretyczną podstawą badań empirycznych. Ostatnia część proponuje metody i techniki badawcze, które, jak się wydaje, są w największym stopniu pomocne w badaniach przekazywania i nabywania pozadyskursywnej wiedzy.
    The article is focused the issue of non-discursive knowledge and its transmission, which is marginalized in Polish sociology. A starting point is the assumption that beyond discursive knowledge, there is also non-discursive knowledge that is universal, because it is used every day by everybody. Paradoxically however, it rarely becomes a subject of analysis. The article begins with enumerating the reasons for this exclusion and suggests that a field of sport is an appropriate area for the research on non-discursive knowledge transmission. At the same time the article emphasizes the usefulness of the analysis in this field for the entire sociology due to its potential of providing the answers to the questions such as what are the limits of our knowledge concepts or how to study non-discursive knowledge. The second part of the article presents the notions of (1) embodied knowledge and (2) know-how, which are assigned to the two currents of analysis. It is suggested they can become the theoretical basis for empirical research. The last part describes the research methods which seem to be most useful and adequate in the studies concerning a transfer and acquisition of nondiscursive knowledge.

    Vindication of the body belongs to great projects of our times and the attention body receives can easily be named as one of the leitmotifs of modern age. Body has been subjected to repression, alienation and taming of its uncontrollable tendencies and wide disregard. Previous epochs left us with the dualism of mind and body, in which the spiritual element has been largely favored as the one connected to the universal truth. In recent times the situation shifted and it is the body that is seen as a source of authenticity and individuality. Attitudes towards the body have changed with the development of modern science, cultural perspective and new knowledge about body and its functions including psychosomatic and psychological. Moreover now-a-days bodies are protected like never before with new technologies. Subsequently bodies have become substituted in interaction with the outside world and estranged.

    This article situates the experiences of having penile implant surgery between medical interventions and privately understood meanings and practices. Using my own experiences, supplemented with information from online sources, I document the changes that occur in the meanings and the practices that implant surgery enables. My analysis derives from the concepts of habitus and the looking glass body, and it begins with a diagnosis of impotence and moves through the various considerations that lead to surgery and its aftermaths. I suggest that understanding how medical technology interacts with everyday meanings contributes to a wider application of the concept of habitus while expanding a symbolic interactionist perspective of the body.

    The article discusses various forms of embodiment in lived religion and different ways of studying them. It focuses on three approaches to embodiment: the study of religious subjectivity that involves experiencing one’s own body, the study of shared cultural representations of the body, and the study of determinants that change body states and thus influence religious thought and behavior. It is argued that embodiment in lived religion does not just mean that the body is at the center of religious life. Embodiment manifest itself in all dimensions of religious life from ritual behavior to ineffable religious experience. It is most clearly seen in everyday religious activity that forms the core of lived religion.

    In this paper I will try to systematically lay out and describe the multiple dimensions of the embodied experience of illness, which until recently has been the main focus within the field of the phenomenology of medicine. In order to do this, I will turn to analysis of the nature of embodiment in Husserl’s phenomenology. I will argue that based on Husserl’s phenomenology of the body, one can distinguish four ways of experiencing one’s body, or four dimensions of embodiment. I will distinguish between experience of one’s body as 1) a bearer of sensations (the affective dimension of embodiment); 2) a seat of free movement, characterized by the faculty of “I can” (the functional dimension of embodiment); 3) a material thing in a causal relationship with the material world (the material dimension of embodiment); 4) a material thing embedded in a social context (the social dimension of embodiment). I will then apply the proposed classification of dimensions of embodiment to the experience of illness, focusing on the various ways these dimensions have been used within the phenomenology of medicine. This serves two purposes. Firstly, it provides a framework for classification of the existing interpretations of the experience of illness; secondly, it opens up a way for a comprehensive analysis of the experience of illness which includes both individual and social aspects of embodiment as well as their mutual intertwining.

    The article considers the problem of researcher’s embodiment in the process of data gathering and analysis in an ethnographic study on social world of climbing. In author’s opinion, presented reflections go beyond described case and remain applicable to every ethnographic research interested in embodied experiences of human beings, especially these in which the main research topic is physical, e.g., sport activity, bodywork, and work with the body. The author analyses relations between embodiment of particular actions taken by the researched subjects and embodiment of the research process. She raises the problem of transition between the researcher’s identity and the social world participant’s identity – searching for the possibility of using autoethnography in the process of data gathering and analyzing. Finally, she presents three aspects of the body/embodiment in the ethnographic research, referring them to the studied subjects (climbers) and to the researcher: (a) the body as an agent, (b) the embodied experience, (c) the body as a subject of theorizing and reflections. The author emphasizes the embodied nature of research process – especially in the ethnographic studies – and suggests taking into consideration the embodiment of the researcher and the role of the body in the process of knowledge production.

    Papież Franciszek bardzo często w swoich przemówieniach nawiązuje do dramatów ludzkiego życia. Choroba, cierpienie i ubóstwo są tematami, które szczególnie poruszają serce każdego człowieka, szczególnie zaś chrześcijanina. W papieskich wypowiedziach pojawia się często wyrażenie„ciało Chrystusa”, które powinno inspirować do świadczenia miłości każdemu napotkanemu bliźniemu. Niniejszy artykuł wskazuje na rozumienie samego wyrażenia w nauczaniu Pisma Świętego i Tradycji Kościoła, a następnie pokazuje możliwości jego wykorzystania na gruncie teologii systematycznej. Taka teologia musi bowiem z ostrożnością podchodzić do interpretacji pojęcia „ciała”, które już u autorów greckich otrzymuje różne, lecz precyzyjne znaczenie.
    Pope Francis frequently refers to dramas of human life in his speeches. Disease, suffering and poverty are issues which move every man, especially Christians. In Pope Francis’s statements the expression ‘the Body of Christ’ appears very often. This expression should inspire to provide love to every fellow human being that we meet. This paper points to understanding this expression itself in the Holy Bible teaching and Church tradition, and then it shows opportunities of its application to systematic theology. Such theology must very carefully approach the interpretation of the ‘body’ expression, which already in Greek authors had varied but precise meaning.

    While thoroughly theorized in rhetorical studies, the body primarily is understood as or through text. Following a literature review of the body in rhetorical scholarship, this article argues that the situated, concrete body is integral to ideological identity through its function as doxastic warrant in enthymematical argumentation. The article finally outlines a rhetorical-ethnographic orientation for investigating the points of expression for a doxastic body of a specific field.
    Choć ciało podlega dogłębnej analizie w studiach retorycznych, rozumiane jest przede wszystkim jako tekst lub poprzez tekst. Po dokonaniu przeglądu literatury na temat ciała w badaniach retorycznych, niniejszy artykuł dowodzi, że umiejscowione, konkretne ciało jest integralną częścią tożsamości ideologicznej poprzez swoją funkcję doksastycznego dowodu w argumentacji entymematycznej. Artykuł nakreśla retoryczno-etnograficzną perspektywę w badaniu punktów ekspresji doksastycznego ciała w konkretnej dziedzinie.

    Artykuł pokazuje, w jaki sposób autoetnografia może wzbogacić badania nad sportem. Na podstawie swoich doświadczeń jako byłej biegaczki wyczynowej autorka opisuje, w jaki sposób wykorzystała narzędzia takie jak: film autoetnograficzny, fotografia czy dziennik badawczy do kompleksowego antropologicznego opisu zmysłowego doświadczenia biegu. Badaczka obserwuje poszerzający się zakres wykorzystania autoetnografii w różnorodnych tematach badawczych ze szczególnym pochyleniem się nad antropologią ciała. Mierzy się z problemem językowej niewyrażalności doświadczenia ciała w sporcie i proponuje własne rozwiązania. Tekst został napisany na podstawie książki Ucieleśnione w ruchu. Polskie biegaczki wyczynowe w perspektywie antropologicznej oraz uzupełniony o nowe spostrzeżenia. Jak pisze autorka: „Autoetnografia ma dla mnie wartość również w tym sensie, że jest ciekawą konfrontacją rozmówców z badaczem, podczas której zachodzi wymiana doświadczeń i opinii. Jest to swego rodzaju praca nad relacją. W ten sposób obie strony się odsłaniają, obie coś ryzykują, a to może prowadzić do ciekawych wniosków” (Szyma 2019: 32).
    The article shows how autoethnography can enrich research on sport. As a former competitive runner, the author describes how she has used tools such as autoethnographical movie, photography, or research diary for a complex anthropological illustration of the running experience. The researcher observer the expanding scope of ways in which this technique can be applied to a variety of research topics, with a special consideration of the anthropology of body. She also tackles the problem of the linguistic incommunicability of experiencing the body in sport as well as she suggests solutions. The article is based on the book Embodied in Motion: Polish Female Professional Runners in Anthropological Perspective, but also supplemented with new observations. As its author writes, “For me, autoethnography is valuable also in that it is an interesting engagement between the interlocutors and the researcher, during which an exchange of experiences and opinions takes place. It is a certain work on the relationship. This way, both parties expose themselves; both risk something, and this can result in interesting conclusions” [the editor’s translation].

    This article attempts to situate the language of Hijikata Tatsumi’s butō in a broader critical context, allowing the legacy of Hijikata to be introduced into the contemporary choreographic and performative practice. The author returns to her first encounter with the words of Hijikata, i.e. the essay Kaze Daruma (Wind Daruma), which constitutes a starting point for an in-depth reflection on Hijikata’s ankoku butō. Her discussion of this concept extends beyond a biography study, determinism, and essentialism. The author analyses the complex choreographic method of ‘notational butō’, which uses words as the key element and a trigger of choreographic processes and structures. The article also takes the reader closer to the somatic experience of Hijikata’s butō, thus being a methodological suggestion and an invitation to combine the somatic practice of butō with critical theoretical research.

    W artykule zaprezentowane zostały zagadnienia związane ze zjawiskiem społecznych uwarunkowań doświadczania choroby, niesprawności i bólu. Tekst skierowany jest do socjologów, antropologów, pedagogów, a także przedstawicieli nauk medycznych zajmujących się wymienionymi wyżej zagadnieniami. W artykule prezentuję metodę autoetnografii, wskazuję różnice pomiędzy autoetnografią analityczną i sugestywną. Skupiam się jednak głównie na praktyce badawczej oraz wskazówkach i wątpliwościach dotyczących tego rodzaju badań. W tekście prezentuję dwa badania autoetnograficzne, których autorzy doświadczali poważnej, zagrażającej życiu choroby. Na ich podstawie wskazuję najważniejsze cechy, jakie powinno posiadać badanie autoetnograficzne. Są wśród nich: teoretyczna i metodologiczna dyscyplina, wgląd we własne doświadczenia, przeżycia oraz szczerość i otwartość. Odnoszę się także do rozróżnienia autoetnografii jako techniki i metody badawczej. W ostatniej części tekstu prezentuję niektóre wątki wykorzystane w moich własnych badaniach autoetnograficznych oraz wskazuję zalety i zagrożenia, a także praktyczne wskazówki związane ze stosowaniem autoetnografii jako metody i techniki badawczej.
    The article presents issues related to the phenomenon of social conditions of experiencing illness, disability, and pain. It will be presented from the perspective of sociologists, anthropologists, educators, and representatives of medical science. The article presents autoethnographical method, pointing out differences between its two kinds: analytical and evocative. In the text, I focus mainly on research practice, guidelines, and concerns regarding methods or techniques of research. In this article, I present two autoethnographic studies by the authors who have experienced serious, life-threatening disease. On this ground, I will present the most important features of autoethnographic study, such as: theoretical and methodological discipline, insights into one’s own experience, experiences, honesty, and openness. I also refer to distinction between autoethnography as a technique and method of social research. In the last part of the text, I present some of the issues pertinent to my own autoethnographic study and point out advantages and risks, as well as some practical tips related to the use of autoethnography.

    Against the backdrop of an increasing interest in visual methods in social research, this paper examines some theoretical foundations of human (inter-)action by reflecting on the interplay between senses, the body, and biography. The main purpose of the paper is to combine an integral, non-Cartesian concept of the self as body (respectively the lived body as self) with biographical research—thus enriching research on the body, as well as on biography. Criticizing the Cartesian split of body and mind, classical phenomenological (Leib) and recent concepts of the body (“embodiment”) are sketched, resulting in a processual model of the sensual construction of the lived and living body in its environment. Given the interplay of bodily foundations of the self and processes of biographical structuring, so far, distant fields of research are converged. Some suggestions for conceptual improvements, an attentional shift to body aspects, respective research topics, and the extension of methods exceeding the narrative biographical interview in biographical research are indicated.
