Opis:
The purpose of the present paper is to show how conceptual metaphor theory and blending theory or conceptual integration model can be complementary in analysis of language. We are going to discuss the language of the medical television series House M.D. (seasons 1-5) with the aim to demonstrate how the use of conceptual metaphors and blends reveals the mysterious workings of the human body, disease, diagnosis and treatment to laymen - the viewers. The article discusses six examples of blending paying special attention to the following features of blending operations: achieving goals of blending, namely providing human scale, global insight and coming up with a story, and inputs clashing.

Opis:
The role of conceptual integration and simple dynamic scenarios in the meaning construction of the mapping in mathematicsOver the last two decades the impact of conceptual metaphor and conceptual blending on mathematics has been extensively researched (Lakoff & Núñez, 2000; Fauconnier & Turner, 2002; Turner, 2005; Núñez, 2006; Alexander, 2011; Turner, 2012; Danesi, 2016; Woźny, 2018). This paper examines the manner in which simple dynamic scenarios allow, through the process of conceptual integration, for multiple ways of constructing the meaning of a mathematical mapping. The paper analyses selected fragments extracted from two popular academic mathematics textbooks to ascertain how the authors use a number of simple dynamic scenarios to explain the concept. The paper then demonstrates how these dynamic scenarios help to avoid the problem of circularity of the (static) formal definition of the mapping. The results of the study indicate that conceptual blending may account for the flexibility of mathematics and its effectiveness in modelling the world around us.

The author argues that the material reveals the framework of the satirically created fictional Escobar language, which fills the element of the conceptual structure of San Escobar, blended from the concepts of Poland, Latin America and fictional countries. The language revealed can be perceived as a pidgin based on Polish and Spanish.

The profitability of a cement plant depends largely on the efficient operation of the blending stage, therefore, there is a need to control the process at the blending stage in order to maintain the chemical composition of the raw mix near or at the desired value with minimum variance despite variation in the raw material composition. In this work, neuro-fuzzy model is developed for a dynamic behaviour of the system to predict the total carbonate content in the raw mix at different clay feed rates. The data used for parameter estimation and model validation was obtained from one of the cement plants in Nigeria. The data was pre-processed to remove outliers and filtered using smoothening technique in order to reveal its dynamic nature. Autoregressive exogenous (ARX) model was developed for comparison purpose. ARX model gave high root mean square error (RMSE) of 5.408 and 4.0199 for training and validation respectively. Poor fit resulting from ARX model is an indication of nonlinear nature of the process. However, both visual and statistical analyses on neuro-fuzzy (ANFIS) model gave a far better result. RMSE of training and validation are 0.28167 and 0.7436 respectively, and the sum of square error (SSE) and R-square are 39.6692 and 0.9969 respectively. All these are an indication of good performance of ANFIS model. This model can be used for control design of the process.

Opis:
This paper investigates the conceptualization of the gene in the book The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins from the point of view of the Conceptual Metaphor Theory and the Conceptual Blending Theory. It is argued that there are two senses of the gene: gene1 is a physically existing section of the DNA, gene2 is information about protein synthesis. It is the second sense of the concept of the gene that undergoes metaphorization. The analysis reveals that Dawkins’ gene is a conceptual blend which becomes extensively elaborated. Through elaboration the gene becomes personified on the one hand and deified on the other. The study shows the richness of Dawkins’ personification: the gene is conceptualized as building and controlling organisms, cooperating and competing with other genes, even showing personality traits. Deification of the gene is focused on highlighting its stipulated immortality and power to create organisms, humans included. The gene blend is at the same time used as an input space in the integration network producing the meme blend. It is also established that the personification of the gene plays the theory-constitutive role in the sense of Boyd (1993).

In his early career, Kenneth Millar, better known as Ross Macdonald, emulated the style of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler. By the 1960s he had established himself as a distinct voice in the hardboiled genre. In his Lew Archer series, he conveys the complexity of his characters and settings primarily by the use of metaphors. In his 1966 novel Black Money the device performs three functions. In the case of minor characters, the author uses metaphors to comment on Californian society. Concurrently, metaphors describing major characters allow him to develop their dramatic arcs, whereas the recurring elements of the leitmotif serve to demonstrate the narrating detective’s growing concerns with the ongoing investigation. Arguably, it was Macdonald’s use of metaphors that helped define his unique voice.

Nowadays the omnipresence of advertisements, and the necessity of conscious and subconscious mental interpretation of their hidden messages, can hardly be overlooked. In the present article, the authors attempt to provide additional evidence for the role of multimodal metaphor, metonymy, and conceptual blending in hidden cognitive mechanisms involved in the understanding and/or the correct interpretation of printed non-commercial advertisements and their overall communicative effect thus brought about. The objective is to consider and analyse text-image non-commercial advertisements randomly retrieved from the Internet; the analysis is carried out from the cognitive perspective and aims at discussing the functions of multimodal metaphor, metonymy and conceptual blending as powerful mechanisms exploited for creative purposes in advertising texts and accompanying images, and thus in conveying the central ideas embedded in the adverts.

A Cognitive Linguistics approach to internet memes on selected Polish internet sitesThe present study aims to analyse selected internet memes as examples of social communication from the perspective of Cognitive Linguistics, and to examine more closely the relation between their visual and verbal aspects. Internet memes contain a wide range of constructions (necessary for rebuilding the semantic framework and extracting selected content), which are fragmentary but at the same time sufficient to induce a whole framework of meanings by using their salient features. The multimodal context is considered within the frameworks of conceptual metaphor theory (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980), construal (Langacker, 1987, 2008), frame semantics (Fillmore, 1988), conceptual blending theory (Fauconnier & Turner, 2002) and Discourse Viewpoint Space (Dancygier & Vandelanotte, 2016). The paper will present an analysis of the structure of internet memes, which are rich concepts that spread rapidly and widely, and also invite recipients to actively participate in the construction of the message, thus becoming contributors. Memy internetowe na wybranych polskich stronach internetowych. RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The purpose of my article is to demonstrate how the terms of multimodality and intersubjectivity function within the areana of English humour, specifically in reference to a chosen sitcom. To this means I shall employ the cognitive apparatus of conceptual integration theory, aka blending. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The presented research problem centres around the notions of intersubjectivity, i.e. the human ability to display a shared perception of reality with regard to members of their own community, as well as multimodality, i.e. the use of more than one sense for the purpose of meaning rendition. Both phenomena are studied here with regard to the English humour, whose explanation is based on a cognitive linguistic method of blending. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: Having explained the term ‘English humour’, I then clarify intersubjectivity, multimodality and cognitive integration, which will serve here as the tools for the purpose of my humour analysis. Therein I intend to show how they interlink and how their roles influence the comprehension of English humour. RESEARCH RESULTS: The result of this argumentation is constituted by the fact that intersubjectivity and multimodality together with blending can greatly enhance the comprehension of the amusing contents within English comedy. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The analysis confirms that conceptual integration theory, as enriched by intersubjectivity and multimodality, provides a humour researcher with a concrete apparatus for measuring humour effects. However, further research is advocated into the process of blending, as accompanied by intersubjectivity and multimodality, with recourse to English humour as well as other types of humour, e.g. the Polish comedy, in order to provide contrastive evidence for these tools and their usefulness or effectiveness.

The objective of this paper is to apply a revised model of conceptual integration as proposed by Brandt and Brandt [Brandt and Brandt 2005, 3, 216-249; Brandt 2013] to the analysis of recently coined neologisms expressed in the form of lexical blends. Assuming that lexical blending is one of the most productive word-formation processes [Lehrer 2003, 15, 369-382; Lehrer 2007, 115-133; Gries 2004, 415-428], the question arises whether it should be considered solely for morphological analysis, or rather viewed as a cognitively entrenched phenomenon. The case of Polish Miserikordyna that is to be scrutinized within the course of the proposed analysis opts for the latter, thus giving conceptual blends priority over lexical blends. To prove this, the analysis of the proposed neologism will be carried out with the aid of a six-space model as delineated by Line Brandt and Per Aage Brandt. It is going to be proved that lexical blends involve more than a morphological operation since the process of their creation starts at the conceptual level and is inextricably bound with on-line processing and on-line decoding. Therefore, the Brandt and Brandt model seems an appropriate framework as it may contribute to a more thorough interpretation and ultimate understanding of various instances of such lexical blends.

Opis:
The essence of advertising lies very often in unusual and surprising juxtapositions of apparently incongruous elements, which nevertheless successfully combine in producing a coherent and understandable message. A vital role is performed by a skillfully engineered context, which allows for simultaneous activation of certain otherwise inconspicuous senses and the construction of novel and attractive connections. Such theoretical proposals as Lemke’s traversals (2001; 2005), Fauconnier and Turner’s Conceptual Blending Theory (1998; 2002) and Kecskes’s Dynamic Model of Meaning (2008) seem to describe many vital aspects of the phenomenon in question. It is in advertising that we often come across the linking of elements by transgressing naturally existing borders between domains which are unrelated, and we are invited to map onto one another different mental spaces on the basis of their salient analogy or identity, and indulge in creative riddle-like exploration of contextual elements in order to reconstruct the intended message. These techniques’ true power lies in their ability to blur the distinction between ‘the real’ and ‘the imagined’ to such an extent that certain irrational but attractive connections, implanted in the minds of the audience, contribute to subsequent decisions in the real world. The present study attempts to uncover the ways in which certain unrelated elements are skillfully brought together in a context which allows for such a juxtaposition in selected Polish TV advertisements for various medicine and health-related products. The method employed is an in-depth content analysis of the material, followed by an attempt to integrate the identified mechanisms with the models of meaning-making mentioned above. The results will hopefully help in better understanding of the ways in which particular components of the context may interact with the message expressed verbally or pictorially in the construction of multilevel meanings in advertising communication.

Opis:
Colorization is a term used to describe a computerized process for adding colour to black and white pictures, movies or TV programs. This process involves replacing a scalar value that represents pixels' intensity or luminance by a vector in a three dimensional colour space with luminance, saturation and hue or simply RGB. The colorization process is also used to convert the grey scale to colour on medical images. Colour increases the visual appeal of an image and it also makes a medical visualization more attractive. Changes in colour are more easily perceived then changes in shades of grey and therefore this procedure makes the interpretation and understanding of the image easier. Since the mapping between intensity and colour has no inherently "correct" solution, human interaction and/or external information usually plays a large role. In this paper we present a novel colorization method that takes advantage of the morphological distance transformation and image structures to automatically propagate the colour scribbled by the user within the grey scale image. The effectiveness of the algorithm allows the user to work interactively and obtain the desired results promptly after providing the colour. In the paper we show that the proposed method allows for high quality colorization results for still images without precise segmentation.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The purpose of my article is to present the notion of cultural memory as applied to both the English society as well as the English sense of humour, and to examine these in relation to WW2 by means of the cognitive integration theory, aka blending. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The presented research problem hinges around the term of memory, specifically the collective memory of the English, as perceived with regard to its multimodal conceptualization with the culture, together with its inextricable link with the English sense of humour. All this has been scrutinised by a linguistic method, i.e. conceptual integration theory, and the references to the literature in question. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: Having defined the goal of my paper, and the basic concepts pertaining to it (memory, collective memory, English sense of humour), I proceed to the brief explanation of the linguistic paradigm, i.e. blending theory, which is employed within this study. Then, I present the analysis of the English humour tackling the subject of the Second World War, which is performed with the aid of the blending theory. RESEARCH RESULTS: The result of this argumentation is the preservation of the glorious memories of the British past via the English sense of humour, which helps to deal with the trauma and the not‑so‑glarious moments of the English history. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: This analysis confirmed that conceptual integration theory can be utilized as a tool with which to analyse the collective memory of the English and their sense of humour. It also proved that the English nation employs their humour into the processing of the historical past, which softens the blow of the horrendous events, and makes it possible for the English to glorify and idealise their role within the world’s arena.

Opis:
This work focused on mechanical behavior of polymer by implementing high speed mixing (HSM) method of polymer blending. In this study, polyethylene (PE), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), polystyrene (PS), and polypropylene (PP) were used as they are the most abundant polymers used at the current time. The research was carried out using counter rotating twin screw extruder at constant speed of 249 rpm and at 120 °C with weight mixing ratio of the plastics are 1 : 1 : 1 : 1. According to tensile study, stress strain curve of the HSM sample exhibited an alloy-like characteristic. With references to other type of virgin polymers and some polymer blends the yield stress, Young’s modulus and strain rate of high-speed mixing were quite comparable to the other samples.
Zbadano właściwości mechaniczne mieszaniny polimerów wytworzonej w wyniku mieszania składników w warunkach dużej szybkości ścinania (HSM). Składowymi przygotowywanej mieszaniny były poużytkowe odpady najbardziej rozpowszechnionych tworzyw: polietylenu (PE), poli(tereftalanu etylenu) (PET), polistyrenu (PS) i polipropylenu (PP). Badania prowadzono z wykorzystaniem przeciwbieżnej wytłaczarki dwuślimakowej przy stałej prędkości obrotów ślimaka 249 obr./min (rpm) w temp. 120 °C i stosunku masowym użytych tworzyw 1 : 1 : 1 : 1. Stwierdzono, że krzywa naprężenie-obciążenie próbki uzyskanej metodą HSM miała przebieg podobny do przebiegu krzywej charakterystycznej dla stopu polimerów. Wartości granicy plastyczności, modułu Younga i szybkości odkształcania próbek wytworzonych w warunkach mieszania z dużą szybkością ścinania były porównywalne z odpowiednimi wartościami uzyskanymi w wypadku innych rodzajów polimerów pierwotnych i niektórych mieszanin polimerowych.
