Fruit quality attributes are influenced by environmental, agronomic and genetic factors; both cultivars and growing conditions can vary substantially between UK production and imported fruit. This study aimed to record and dissect the most relevant fruit quality traits for berries imported into the UK in the winter months. Blackberry, blueberry, raspberry and strawberry fruit were imported from 11 countries into a Kent-based packhouse (UK) or purchased from major retailers between December 2018 and March 2019. Multiple fruit quality components were assessed for relative contribution towards a high “overall assessment” fruit quality score. It was found that strawberry and blackberry overall scores were affected by sweetness perception, whereas blueberry and raspberry organoleptics are more complex, with overall scores influenced by flavor perception. Multiple raspberry and strawberry fruit quality traits were found to be associated with genotypic differences, indicating a promising potential for genetic improvement through breeding. By contrast, the study findings suggest that there is less potential for genetic improvement in blueberry, and that the environment may have a large effect on blueberry fruit quality traits.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to determine the effect of the forest floor light conditions on the size of blackberries. The research was conducted in the Forest Experimental Station (LZD) in Krynica (49°26'N, 20°52'E). In autumn 1999, 30 individuals were collected from two selected blackberry patches. The crown closure over the blackberry patch situated in the stand with a broken canopy accounted for 21%, while that over the patch located in the stand with the full canopy cover – 3%. The average weight of individuals from the patch beneath the dense canopy was 1.937 ±1.364 g, while individuals growing under a more open canopy were ten times greater and amounted to 18.027 ±11.993 g. The average length of shoots of individuals growing under the dense canopy was five times larger and equalled 42.4 ±35.2 cm and 278.7 ±186.7 cm, respectively. Blackberries growing under a more open canopy established every second shoot (47%) with a length exceeding 50 cm potentially capable of producing roots and thereby progeny ramets. Only one in ten shoots (13%) in individuals growing under the dense canopy was longer than 50 cm. Individuals growing under a more open canopy were several times larger, which means that the blackberry positively responded to the increased access to light by increasing the size of individuals. However, a large share of live shoot lengths in the total length of an individual from the patch under a more open stand canopy compared to the share of this parameter in the total length of an individual growing under the dense canopy suggests that under favourable conditions the expansion of this species is highly probable.

This paper presents results of tribological research of a composition containing as a base, extract of waste blackberry seeds obtained by extraction under supercritical carbon dioxide conditions with sorbitan esters as additives (sorbitan trioleate (STO) sorbitan monolaurate (MLS) and etoxylated sorbitan monolaurate (EO20MLS)). The influence of the concentration of surfactants on the motion resistance, wear and anti-seize properties of the obtained lubricants was analysed. Two types of tests were performed: seizure, with linear load increase and constant load (four-ball device T02). The obtained test results compared to the results for the base (pure extract) to paraffin oil and rapeseed oil were related. It was found that the addition of sorbitan esters to the extract has a greater effect on the improvement of anti-seizure properties than on the reduction of resistance to movement and wear to the base.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań tribologicznych kompozycji smarowych zawierających jako bazę ekstrakt z odpadowych nasion jeżyny pozyskany metodą ekstrakcji w warunkach nadkrytycznego dwutlenku węgla i jako dodatki estry sorbitanu: trioleinian sorbitanu (STO), monolaurynian sorbitanu (MLS) i oksyetylenowany 20 molami tlenku etylenu monolaurynian sorbitanu (EO20MLS). Analizowano wpływ stężenia i rodzaju surfaktanta na opory ruchu, zużycie oraz właściwości przeciwzatarciowe otrzymanych środków smarowych. Wykonano dwa rodzaje testów: zatarciowe, z liniowym narostem obciążenia oraz przy stałym obciążeniu (aparat czterokulowy-T02). Otrzymane wyniki badań odniesiono do rezultatów otrzymanych dla bazy (czysty ekstrakt) oraz do oleju rzepakowego i parafinowego. Stwierdzono, że dodatek estrów sorbitanu do ekstraktu w większym stopniu wpływa na polepszenie właściwości przeciwzatarciowych niż na obniżenie oporów ruchu i zużycia względem bazy.

Blackberries (Rubus spp.) have significant nutraceutical properties, providing phenolic compounds for the consumers. These compounds are useful to human health due to their high antioxidant activity. However, most blackberries destined for fresh markets become unmarketable in 2 to 3 days due to decay and leakage, because they have thin and fragile skin. The present study was aimed to investigate the effect of salicylic acid (SA) and calcium chloride (CaCl2) on extending the postharvest quality and bioactive compounds of blackberry during refrigerated storage. Blackberry fruits cv. ‘Jumbo’ were dipped in 2% CaCl2, or in 2.0 mM salicylic acid (SA) for 10 min. Total soluble solids contents, titratable acidity, pH, ascorbic acid contents, total phenolics contents, and total antioxidant activity were investigated initially on 4th, 7th, or 10th day (d) of storage. Changes in fresh weight, titratable acidity, ascorbic acid and total phenol contents were markedly delayed by both treatments. Berries treated with 2 mM SA or 2% CaCl2 exhibited markedly better visual quality during the storage period. Considering the overall findings, this study revealed that postharvest SA or CaCl2 applications maintained the storage-life and conserved the valuable marketing features of blackberries over 10 d in cold storage, presumably due to their inhibitory effects on fruit senescence.
