Opis:
Particulate matter (PM) is one of the most harmful inhaled pollutants. Where pollutants have been emitted into the atmosphere, the most effective method for cleaning the air is through phytoremediation, whereby plants act as biological filters. PM has a negative impact on plants, but knowledge of PM effects on the photosynthetic apparatus is limited. In European forests, species of the genus Prunus L. play a key role in the composition of the forest understory and urban as well as industrial plantings. Shrubs of the native P. padus L. and closely-related invasive alien P. serotina Ehrh. are particularly widespread. Thus, both are good model species in which to study the impact of PM pollution. The aim of this study was to assess the accumulation of PM in the context of leaf morphology and amount of epicuticular waxes on foliage, and the efficiency of the photosynthetic apparatus of P. padus and P. serotina. The study was conducted under controlled conditions using two variants of dust, cement and roadside PM. In addition, we analyzed the absorption of dust by leaves dividing it into three fractions by size (10−100 μm, 2.5−10 μm and 0.2−2.5 μm). Results showed that both P. padus and P. serotina accumulate PM mostly on the surface of their leaves (SPM), rather than in the wax layer (WPM). P. padus accumulated higher amounts of PM than did P. serotina. The higher presence of PM on leaves of P. padus resulted in a reduction of the efficiency of the photosynthetic apparatus, manifested by lower rates of photosynthesis and chlorophyll a fluorescence, coinciding with an increased stomatal resistance. A strong negative correlation was found between the amount of PM accumulation and the efficiency of the photosynthetic apparatus in P. padus, but not in P. serotina. We have concluded that alien P. serotina is more tolerant to the conditions of stress caused by PM pollution than is the native P. padus, which may partly explain its success in the invasion in Europe.

The assessment of black cherry seedlings root system was carried out at the Didactic-Experimental Establishment of the UWM in Olsztyn in September 2002. The seeds from which the examined seedlings were obtained had been sown into the ground on 2 October 2001. The following seeds were used for the experiment: fresh, sown into the ground immediately after obtaining them from fruit, partly dried seeds and seed sown a month later than in the preceding case as well as physiologically immature seeds and whole fresh fruit. The root systems of seedlings obtained from seeds stored for 1 year and 2 years in open and closed “Twist” type jars at room temperature and in a freezer were also assessed. The largest proportions of seedlings were obtained from seeds stored for 1 year and 2 years in a freezer. The lowest proportions of seedlings were obtained from seeds sown a month later and from whole fresh fruit. In this experiment the most favorable development of the root system was observed in case of seedlings from seeds stored for 2 years in an open jar. The time from picking to sowing of seeds was of little importance. The seedlings from partly dried seeds and later sowing were characterized by the lowest mass of the root system.
Ocenę systemu korzeniowego siewek czeremchy późnej przeprowadzono we wrześniu 2002 r. w Zakładzie Dydaktyczno-Doświadczalnym UWM w Olsztynie. Największą liczbę siewek otrzymano z nasion przechowywanych 1 rok i 2 lata w zamrażalniku. Najmniejszy odsetek wschodów zanotowano z nasion wysianych miesiąc później oraz z całych owoców świeżych. W niniejszych badaniach najkorzystniejszy rozwój systemu korzeniowego obserwowano u siewek z nasion przechowywanych 2 lata w otwartym słoiku. Termin od zbioru do wysiewu nasion miał małe znaczenie. Siewki z nasion podsuszonych i późniejszego siewu charakteryzowały się najmniejszą masą systemu korzeniowego.

Opis:
In forest research and nursery practice there is often a need to monitor the condition and responses of trees to different stressors. Chlorophyll content in leaf is a good indicator of plant health and can be measured rapidly in many repetitions using the chlorophyll meter SPAD-502Plus. This practical tool provides the values of chlorophyll content in relative units (SPAD values), therefore it should be calibrated for each species to determine chlorophyll content in physiological units. In this study, the chlorophyll meter SPAD-502Plus was calibrated to be used for total chlorophyll (Chl), chlorophyll a (Chl a), chlorophyll b (Chl b) and carotenoids (Car) contents determination in leaves of Quercus petraea and Prunus serotina seedlings growing in different light environments. In the same leaf, SPAD values were measured with the Chl meter, and then photosynthetic pigments content (PP; chlorophyll and carotenoids) was consistently assessed using a conventional extraction method. The measurements were conducted once a month from May to November in three light treatments to obtain the widest possible range of the PP content values. To estimate total Chl content in leaves using the chlorophyll meter the quadratic polynomial functions: y = 0.0374x2 + 0.5345x + 0.5137 and y = 0.024x2 + 2.1998x – 32.7866 were obtained from the relationship between the Chl meter SPAD readings and total Chl determined spectrophotometrically for P. serotina and Q. petraea, respectively. Chl was higher under shade compared with full light regime and Car were linearly correlated with Chl. PP content was positively correlated with air temperature except for Car in P. serotina leaves. It was concluded that at the same soil conditions chlorophyll content in leaves of Q. petraea and P. serotina depended on species, light regimes and temperature of growth. The chlorophyll meter can be used as a practical tool to monitor and compare photosynthetic pigments content in leaves between tree species or populations acclimated to different environments together with a control of abiotic and biotic factors affecting pigments content and leaf optical properties.

Opis:
Among the invasive tree species identified in Polish forests, black cherry (Prunus serotina Ehrh.) appears to pose the greatest threat. The objective of this study was i), to determine the abundance of this species in the forests managed by the State Forests National Forest Holding (PGLLP) and ii), to characterise the ecological conditions that it is found in. The source data was obtained from the State Forests Information System (SILP) database. In Polish forests, black cherry mostly occurs as an understory plant and is present in a total area of 99,185 hectares, which is 1.4% of the forest area under the management of the PGLLP. Although Prunus serotina can be found within a wide range of habitats, it most commonly occurs on sites that can be considered average in terms of fertility (mixed coniferous and mixed deciduous types) developed primarily on rusty soils (podzols).

The secondary invasion of Prunus serotina in the forest ecosystems is currently a serious problem, both in ecological and economical terms. The article presents how the intensity of the regeneration of this kenophyte depends on the type of coniferous forest community, in which it takes place. The effect of the herb and moss layers and of their attributes on the abundance of black cherry saplings is discussed.

Opis:
Black cherry (Prunus serotina) was planted in forests in Central Europe in the hope of producing valuable timber and after the first disappointments, in the hope of improving the soils of coniferous plantations. Nevertheless, an unequivocal evaluation of its effect on soil environment is still a controversial issue. The aim of this study was to determine a temporary fluctuation of selected soil properties in Scots pine forest dominated by black cherry. The research was carried out in Wołów Forest Division (SW Poland). Two Scots pine monocultures developed on podzol site with and without P. serotina in shrub layer, were selected for the study. Twelve research plots (10×10 m) were randomly selected on the sites. On each plot the cover of P. serotina in the shrub layer was evaluated and every three months, during single research year (November 2013 − November 2014) soil properties (total N, organic C, soil reaction) were determined in organic (O) and humus (A) horizons. Analysis of variance and PCA procedure demonstrate some significant relationships between P. serotina and soil properties in Scots pine forest. The presence of black cherry contributes to continued changes in the organic horizon expressed by increase in total N (range of average from 1.14 to 1.38%) and drop in C:N ratio (range of average from 22.86 to 25.73). Apart from the spring, increase in pH value in the organic (range of average from 4.03 to 4.58) and humus horizons (range of average from 3.59 to 4.04) was found on the site invaded by black cherry.

Changes in activity of the grain aphid peroxidase (Px) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) towards phenolics isolated from leaves of black currant, sour cherry and walnut were examined. Slight increase in activity of peroxidase was found within insect tissues after 24 h of walnut extract treatment, whereas black currant and sour cherry strongly inhibited activity of this enzyme. Later on, the walnut extract reduced activity of the enzyme, finally about 30%. The other extracts showed slight changes in Px activity. The grain aphid’s polyphenol oxidase was stimulated during the first 24 h of the experiment. Further treatment with the phenolics extracts reduced activity of the grain aphid polyphenol oxidase. Generally, phenolics isolated from the black currant and sour cherry were more effective in reducing activity of the aphid peroxidase, whereas phenolics from walnut reduced the polyphenol oxidase activity. Possible application of the phenolics isolated from the woody plants as modern biopesticides towards the grain aphid is discussed.

Effect of plant phenolics isolated from leaves of blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum L.) and sour cherry (Prunus cerasus L.) as potential biopesticides against the grain aphid was examined. The extracts from the sour cherry contained a twice higher level of salicylic acid than extract from leaves of the blackcurrant. Moreover, concentration of chlorogenic acid was higher in sour cherry and the content of tannic acid within both plant tissues was at the same level. Both examined extracts had a negative effect on development of the grain aphid when the aphid fed on wheat plants sprayed with 1.0%, 2.5% and 5.0% solutions. The length of prereproductive period (time from birth to maturity) of the aphids was extended from 5.9 days on control plants (not sprayed) to 8.1 days, when the aphids were fed on the treated plants. Apterous females of Sitobion avenae fed on sprayed plants showed lower fecundity and lower values of intrinsic rate of natural increase.
