Opis:
The main purpose of this article is to prove that one can become a personality only through culture. The authors propose to regard culture as a relatively autonomous spiritual sphere, which transcends the narrow requirements of the concrete society in its historical limitations. They argue that personality is the highest level of human development to emerge in culture, whereas the level of a biosocial organism is provided by society. The authors claim that only culture, be it religious or secular, contains an existential and spiritual imperative which demands each human being to realize one’s own potential humanity. They explain why in a postmodern world culture becomes an “existential choice” of each human being, depending on one’s free will: to inherit the culture, to become a human being of humanity or not. In the Free school of philosophy and culture seminars (Odesa, Ukraine), the authors propose to enter the field of culture through the mutual interpretation of a chosen masterpiece of world literature and to link its message with our lives.

Opis:
The two dipterocarp species, Dipterocarpus alatus and Hopea odorata, have been widely planted in degraded forest land in Southern Vietnam in the last decades. However, study on growth characteristics of these species and their associated factors is still limited. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine growth performance in different stand densities, and classify tree quality in 28-year old D. alatus and H. odorata plantations. Our results of analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) indicated that in pure stand aged 28 years, D. alatus outperformed H. odorata in tree growth, biomass and volume. In addition, except for four growth variables including tree height at the first branch (Hb), crown length (CL), crown ratio (CR) and linear crown index (LCI), the remaining variables were negatively affected by stand density. We observed that medium quality trees occupied the greatest proportion in both D. alatus (47%; n = 425) and H. od- orata (50%; n = 400). Except for CR and LCI, the class of good quality trees had the greatest values in the remaining examined growth variables. In linear discriminant analysis (LDA) model, the classification accuracy of testing set was relatively high in both D. alatus (85%) and H. odorata (91%). The most impor- tant variables for tree quality classification in D. alatus were crown diameter (CD) and diameter at breast height (DBH). Meanwhile, the most important variables in H. odorata were CD and tree height (H). These obtained results suggest that controlling crown size is important for shaping individual tree quality. Our data evidenced that D. alatus and H. odorata planted in Southern Vietnam with density equal or less than 500 trees per ha could yield high proportion of good and medium quality trees.

Opis:
Beech is the most important commercial species in the Caspian forests of Iran. Selective cutting and harvesting methods may adversely impact the quality of the residual trees, as the injuries make the trees prone to future disease, insect infestations or timber defects. Although attempts to better understand how wounds affect the residual trees have been made in many different contexts, there are still few investigations on uneven-aged forests. In this study the key objectives were to determine and model the healing rate for different wound parameters (width, length, and area of wound); to analyse the relationship between wound healing rate (WHR), tree diameter growth and tree height growth; to analyse the WHR in relation to wound position on the stem; and to analyse the relationship between WHR, width and area of wound in DBH classes and social classes, with the aim of enabling the prognosis of logging wounds. Wounded beech trees were examined immediately after selective logging and after a 5-year period. The WHR was 31.2 ±7.7 cm2 year-1. The wound width healing rate (18.4 ±3.4 mm·year-1) was significantly higher than the wound length healing rate (4.5 ±1.6 mm·year-1). Only 12% of wounds were completely closed after a 5-year period, and 15 years are necessary for the complete closure of 80% of total wounds. The ratio of wound area to stem area at wound height (RWS) showed a more pronounced effect on diameter than on height. Regression analysis showed that WHR was correlated negatively with wound area and width and positively with tree diameter growth, but no significant relationship was found between height growth and WHR parameters. The WHR was significantly higher at an upper position than at a lower one, and statistical tests showed that the tree vertical layering classes had a significant effect on WHR. Finally, it was shown that WHRs in upper-storey trees are significantly higher than in the middle and lower storeys.

The aim of the presented study was to show an applicability of finite mixture distribution approach for estimating diameter distribution parameters of the dominant and suppressed stands on an example of one-layer, even−aged, pure Scots pine stands. This approach gave a good fit of compound distribution proportions, average d.b.h for the dominant and suppressed stands and standard deviations of d.b.h. for the analysed classes.

The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the biosocial position occupied by the tree on the amount and structure of the biomass produced. The empirical material was measurements of biomass for 63 pines (21 for each of the I, II, and III Kraft classes). The total aboveground biomass of the trees was calculated as sum of following fractions: stem wood, stem bark, living branches, dead branches, shoots, needles and cones. It has been found that with a decrease of biosocial position of tree the share of a stem increases while share of branches in the overall biomass of the tree decreases. On the other hand biosocial position does not affect significantly the share of needles, dead branches and cones.

The study presents the results of MANOVA of tree slenderness. The study material comprised 72 larch trees in a dominant stand of different age classes growing in fresh mixed coniferous (BMśw), fresh mixed deciduous (LMśw) and fresh deciduous (Lśw) forest habitats. The slenderness of each larch tree was calculated as the ratio of tree height [m] to breast height diameter [cm]. Basic statistical characteristics were also established. A three−way analysis of variance was performed assessing the statistical significance of the impact of forest habitat type, age and biosocial position of trees in the stand. A similar analysis was done for two basic measurement characteristics of trees – breast height diameter and height.

Opis:
Investigations were conducted on 48 Scots pines coming from 16 natural sites in northern Poland. This study was an attempt to analyse relationships between crown parameters of model trees and the stem conduction area in terms of site conditions, age and social diversification of the stand. Analyses showed that there is a strong dependency between crown volume and the volume and area of the xylem (sapwood) responsible for the conduction of water with minerals. Indexes of crown transpiration productivity analysed in the study seem to reflect reliably relations found in the forest phytocenoses and are confirmed in physiological dependencies between the transpiration apparatus, the vascular zone and tree height determined by the occupied social class in the forest community. It may be assumed that sapwood area (physiologically active) is characterised by the variable hydraulic conductivity, probably being the function of age and specific individual characters. In order to maintain the flow of transpiration, optimal for growth conditions, a tree as every living organism exhibits a certain adaptation ability, which makes it possible to meet the above conditions and cope with competition in the community.

In the study attempts have been made to compare the conducting area (Pp) values in European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) having different biosocial positions in the stands of younger age classes. The Pp value increases with age and transfer of trees to a higher biosocial class in a stand. Also, the Pps index describing average earlywood conducting area within individual tree−ring was calculated. Both Pp and Pps appear to be the values describing relationships between the conducting area and assimilation−transpiration area more precisely than the entire sapwood area.
