Opis:
In the paper the problems of cryosurgery treatment are discussed. In particular the heat exchange between external cylindrical cryoprobe and human tissue is analyzed. The cryoprobe tip temperature changes from the initial temperature to the minimal one and back in a linear way (broken line). Thermophysical parameters determining the thermal properties of tissue can be treated as the temperature-dependent functions. The freezing model bases on the approach called ‘a one domain method’, and in the energy equation called a substitute thermal capacity appears. At the stage of computations the control volume method (CVM) is used. In the final part of paper the examples of computations are presented.

Opis:
Purpose: The paper presents numerical modeling of the artificial hyperthermia induced by the electric field in order to destroy the abnormal tissue. In particular, the possibility of process control in order to increase the temperature of only the tumor tissue was discussed. Due to the fact, that the external electrodes which generate the additional heat, heats not only the area of the tumor, but also healthy tissue which surrounds the tumor, increasing the temperature inside the cancer is possible by introducing the paramagnetic nanoparticles into the interior. Additionally, the proper selection of voltage on the electrodes and the number of nanoparticles will achieve the optimal effect of hyperthermia treatment. Methods: The multiple reciprocity BEM is applied to solve the coupled problem connected with the biological tissue heating. In order to determine the appropriate values of the parameters the inverse problem has been formulated, connected with simultaneous identification of the voltage of the electrodes and the number of nanoparticles, which is solved using the evolutionary algorithm. Results: The changes of the voltage of electrodes cause the changes of temperature in the entire domain considered, but the possibilities of temperature field control (e.g. a concentration of maximum temperature at the central point of tumor) are rather unrealizable, because the maximum temperature we could observe in the neighbourhood of the electrodes. Conclusions: The idea consisting in the introduction of nanoparticles to the tumor region (for the concentrated energy deposition at the target tissue) is very effective. We obtain the maximum temperature exactly in the tumor domain.

Opis:
The Cattaneo-Vernotte (CVE) equation is considered. This equation belongs to the group of hyperbolic PDE. Supplementing this equation by two additional terms corresponding to perfusion and metabolic heat sources one can apply the CVE as a mathematical model describing the heat transfer processes proceeding in domain of the soft tissue. Such an approach is recently often preferred substituting the classical Pennes model. At the stage of numerical computations the different numerical methods of the PDE solving can be used. In this paper the problems of stability conditions for the explicit scheme of the finite difference method (FDM) are discussed. The appropriate condition limiting the admissible time step have been found using the von Neumann analysis.

The problem discussed in the paper is numerical modeling of thermal processes in the domain of biological tissue secured by a layer of protective clothing being in thermal contact with the environment. The cross-section of the forearm (2D problem) is treated as non-homogeneous domain in which the sub-domains of skin tissue, fat, muscle and bone are distinguished. The air gap between skin tissue and protective clothing is taken into account. The process of external heating is determined by Robin boundary condition and sensitivity analysis with respect to the perturbations of heat transfer coefficient and ambient temperature is also discussed. Both the basic boundary-initial problem and the sensitivity problems are solved by means of control volume method using Voronoi polygons.

Opis:
In the paper the simplified model of thermal processes proceeding in the domain of biological tissue secured with protective clothing is discussed. In particular, the simplification of the mathematical model consists in the omission of the real layer of fabric for which the transient temperature field is determined by the Fourier equation and the introduction in this place of the additional thermal resistance appearing in the boundary condition determining the heat exchange between tissue and environment. In this way both the mathematical model of the thermal processes in the system considered and also numerical realization are greatly simplified. To verify the effectiveness of the approach proposed, the solution of the basic problem and the simplified one have been solved (1D task) using the finite difference method and the results have been compared. It turned out that the results are close and from the practical point of view such simplification is fully acceptable.

Purpose: The problem of the numerical modeling of thermal processes proceeding in the non-homogeneous domain of the human finger is discussed. The domain considered constitutes the assembling of soft and bone tissues and the system of supplying blood vessels (arteries and veins). The mathematical description of the process analyzed corresponds to the so-called vascular models. Methods: At the stage of numerical modeling the algorithm being the composition of the boundary element method (BEM) and the finite difference method (FDM) is applied. Results: The algorithm presented allows one to determine the steady state temperature field in the finger domain in natural convection conditions. To verify the effectiveness and exactness of the method of the problem solution, the thermal imaging measurements of the finger surface temperature have been done. Conclusions: The compatibility of numerical and experimental results (the natural convection conditions) has proved to be quite satisfactory. It is possible to use the algorithm proposed for the modeling of thermal processes proceeding in the conditions of low or high ambient temperatures and the big values of heat transfer coefficients. The impact of protective clothing on the temperature field in the domain of the finger can also be analyzed.

A three-phase-lag (TPL) model is proposed to describe heat transfer in a finite domain skin tissue with temperature dependent metabolic heat generation. The Laplace transform method is applied to solve the problem. Three special types of heat flux are applied to the boundary of skin tissue for thermal therapeutic applications. The depth of tissue is influenced by the different oscillation heat flux. The comparison between the TPL and dual-phase-lag (DPL) models is analyzed and the effects of phase lag parameters […] and material constant […] on the tissue temperature distribution are presented graphically.

The aim of the study is to analyze photothermal and photochemical phenomena that occur during photodynamic therapy (PDT). In this type of therapy, under the influence of the laser, reactions take place related to the transformation of triplet oxygen form into its singlet form which is cytotoxic to the tissue. The increases in temperature resulting from the laser-tissue interaction during PDT are not big; however, they can lead to changes in tissue perfusion, which can affect oxygen delivery to the tissue. The proposed model uses optical diffusion equation, Pennes bioheat transfer equation, and reactions equations for PDT. The main findings of the analysis show the impact of temperature on the value of the perfusion coefficient and triplet oxygen distributions at the end of the treatment procedure.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the phenomena that occur in biological tissueduring photodynamic therapy (PDT). Under the influence of the laser, triplet oxygen istransformed into singlet oxygen, which is cytotoxic to cancer tissue. The impact of thelaser on the tissue may also be accompanied by changes in the thermophysical parameters,e.g., perfusion, which can affect the supply of oxygen to the tissue and, consequently, the outcome of the therapy. The proposed model uses the optical diffusion equation, the Pennes bioheat transfer equation, and reactions equations for PDT. The connectionbetween bioheat transfer and PDT models is taken into account through the respectiverelationships between perfusion rate, capillary blood velocity, and the maximum oxygensupply rate. Furthermore, a method is proposed to model abnormal vascular patterns inthe tumor subdomain. The boundary element method and the finite difference methodwere used in the numerical implementation stage.
