In this article I analyze the forced resettlement/deportation in the narratives of Poles and Ukrainians, who between 1944 and 1946 were “repatriated” from former Borderlands to the “recovered lands” or from South-Eastern Poland to the Soviet Ukraine, and in the memory of their descendants. The empirical base of the analysis were interviews conducted during monographic research in two small towns in Poland and in Ukraine, Krzyż and Zhovkva. The text attempts to answer questions of whether the memory of the displacement among the interviewees from these two places has anything in common, what are the reasons of differences, and how the memory of displacement operates among the younger people in the families. Social and individual context of biographical memory were also analyzed.

The main aim of the article is to examine the human’s attitude towards the other’s death. The field of research was limited to the death testimony of a parent in Polish literature after 1989, based on Mikołaj Łoziński’s Book (2011) and Marcin Wicha’s Things, I didn’t Throw Away (2017). The analysis was focused on the way in which the biographies of the deceased can be created by memories of them in the different phases of grief, and on the creation of intergenerational connections between the orphaned subjects and the material remains corresponding to the life of the dead.

In my article, I argue that Peter Sis’ Tibet Through the Red Box (1998) and the Polish edition of Uri Orlev's Granny Knits (first published in Hebrew in 1981) illustrated by Marta Ignerska (2009) represent two different forms of intergenerational remembering. The visual narratives in question are artistic portrayals of the narrators’ biographical memory, and in some sense it is possible to view both works as narratives in which intergenerational connectivity is an integral aspect of the story. However, in each book the symbolic return to childhood has a different character. In Orlev and Ignerska's book, the rigidly delineated categories of “childhood” and “adulthood” are not really applicable, as they merge on every possible level – in their formal, expressive, and philosophical aspects. In Sis’ narrative, the (visual) language may resemble conventions associated with children's literature, but it is primarily an element of the book's nostalgic message, not a signal of the narrator's authentic and permanent connection with his child self.

Poniższe opracowanie przedstawia próbę namysłu nad kategoriami „miejsca” i „pamięci” oraz ich obecności w badaniach biograficznych. Punkt wyjścia niniejszych rozważań stanowi praca P. Connertona zatytułowana How Modernity Forgets (Connerton 2009) oraz koncepcja „miejsc pamięci” P. Nory (Nora 2009). Rozpoznanie powyższych kategorii poprzedzone zostanie wnikliwszym przyjrzeniem się znaczeniu samego miejsca jako nośnika pamięci. Przywołane zostaną także inne istotne dla zrozumienia tej tematyki terminy, takie jak miejsce pamięci, zwrot przestrzenny (spatial turn) oraz pamięć miejsca (place memory).
This paper presents an attempt of reflection on the categories of “place” and “memory” and their inherence in biographical research. The starting point of this discussion is the P. Connerton’s work entitled How Modernity Forgets (Connerton 2009) and the concept of “places of memory” by P. Nora (Nora 2009). Recognition of the above categories will be preceded by the look at the meaning of the place as the memory medium. Other terms that are essential for the understanding of this subject, such as memory space, spatial turn and place memory, will be referred to.

This text contains a comparative analysis of gentry and peasant narratives about the agricultural reform conducted in Poland on the basis of the Polish Committee of National Liberation’s decree of September 6, 1944. The author sought these narratives in personal documents such as diaries, memoirs, works sent to memoir competitions, and oral history interviews. An analysis of the documents revealed, above all, an asymmetry between the narratives of the gentry and the peasants. For the former, the reform was a key biographical event, while in most of the peasant narratives it was marginal, particularly in the context of other elements of the experience of war and occupation. The points of convergence, in terms of what members of the peasantry and gentry write or say about the reform, are few. Moreover, while the peasants always appear in the narratives of the gentry, the gentry appear much more rarely in the narratives of the peasants. The narratives of the gentry are fairly cohesive and it would seem that they have become the basis for the creation of a collective memory of the gentry as a group. The peasant narratives are quite diverse. Their shape is the outcome of factors such as the narrator’s social and economic status before the war; the fact of being, or not being, a beneficiary of the reform; the narrator’s political engagement; the narrator’s party affiliation at the time of the reform; and the period of Poland’s postwar history when the narrative was written or spoken. The author’s findings reveal what image of the agricultural reform has been preserved in Poles’ memory.

Artykuł prezentuje miejsce wojny i represji stalinowskich w narracjach biograficznych Polaków z Ukrainy Centralnej. Tekst powstał na podstawie analizy treści 63 wywiadów. Szczegółowej analizie poddane zostały 4 wybrane wywiady, reprezentujące najbardziej typowe struktury narracyjne. Celem było pokazanie wpływu oficjalnej sowieckiej pamięci II wojny światowej na kształtowanie się tożsamości najstarszego pokolenia Polaków z Żytomierszczyzny, Kijowszczyzny i Podola. Jak wszyscy mieszkańcy radzieckiej Ukrainy, mniejszość polska poddana była po wojnie silnej propagandzie państwowej, która gloryfikowała zwycięstwo ZSRR w wojnie z Niemcami i przemilczała represje z lat trzydziestych. W tej sytuacji pamięć biograficzna rozmówców sprzeczna była z pamięcią oficjalną. Analizowane wywiady reprezentują różne sposoby negocjowania własnej tożsamości w sytuacji, którą można nazwać asymetrią pamięci biograficznej i zbiorowej. Są to: negowanie części własnego doświadczenia, jego świadome zepchnięcie do sfery prywatnej (separacja) oraz różne odmiany margnalności (wycofanie i poszukiwania).
The article researches role of war and Stalin’s repressions in the biographical narratives of Poles living in Central Ukraine. The text is based on the content of 63 interviews. For the purpose of the detailed analysis I have chosen four of them; each representing a typical narrative structure. The aim of the article was to show infl uence of the offi cial Soviet memory of the II world war on the development of the oldest generation of Poles from Zhytomyr, Kyiv and Podilia region’s identity. As all inhabitants of the Soviet Ukraine, Polish minority was after the war subject of strong state propaganda, which glorifi ed USSR victory over the Germans and silenced repressions of the 1930. In this situation the biographical memory of the interviewees was contradictory to the offi cial one. Analyzed interviews represent various ways of negotiating one’s identity in the situation that might be called asymmetry of the biographical and collective memory. These are: denying part of one’s experience, moving it to the private sphere (separation) and various types of marginality (withdrawal and searching).

The aim of the article is to analyze methodological aspects of implementing research project in a culturally different environment, where a language and national identity difference between interviewee and interviewer is present. The analysis is based on the fieldwork done by the Polish researcher in Ukraine. I try to answer whether different nationality influences in such situation the interaction with the interviewees and the results of the research, whether it is a burden or an advantage, and how this possible influence can be controlled. I am interested in issues of contact with the interviewees and interaction during the interview as such, as well as various kinds of the narrative’s modification by the interviewee because of the different nationality of the researcher. I illustrate the following problems with citations of the interviews conducted in the frame of the project.
Celem artykułu jest analiza metodologicznych aspektów prowadzenia badań w obcym kulturowo środowisku, w sytuacji różnic językowych i różnych identyfikacji narodowych badacza i rozmówcy. Analiza problemu podjęta została na przykładzie badań terenowych zrealizowanych przez polską badaczkę na Ukrainie. Staram się odpowiedzieć na pytanie, czy odmienna narodowość ma w takiej sytuacji wpływ na interakcję z rozmówcami oraz otrzymywany materiał, czy jest ona obciążeniem czy zaletą, a także w jaki sposób można ten wpływ kontrolować. Interesuje mnie kwestia kontaktu z rozmówcami i interakcji podczas samego wywiadu oraz różnego rodzaju przypadki modyfikowania narracji przez rozmówcę ze względu na odmienną identyfikację narodową badacza. Prezentację poszczególnych problemów pojawiających się w toku realizacji badań i analizy materiału ilustruję fragmentami nagranych w ramach badań wywiadów.

W artykule podjęto namysł nad specyfiką współwystępowania i wzajemnych powiązań między kilkoma odrębnymi znaczeniowo kategoriami: rodzicielstwem, autokreacją i biografią. Przy czym rozważania te przebiegają w kilku płaszczyznach zorientowanych na uchwycenie istoty: a) rodzicielstwa rozpoznawanego jako procesu urzeczywistniania dynamicznej wartości towarzyszenia dziecku, b) autokreacji  ujmowanej w całożyciowym planie rozwoju osobowego człowieka dorosłego w kontekście jego dążenia do bycia i stawania się rodzicem, c) integralnego charakteru związku biografii indywidualnej i zbiorowej (wspólnotowej) z autokreacją osoby dorosłej przebiegającą w przestrzeni wspólnoty małżeńskiej i rodzinnej, d) biograficznego wymiaru autokreacji do rodzicielstwa biologicznego i adopcyjnego. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie argumentacji uzasadniającej tezę, że wspomniane kategorie nie tylko współwystępują, ale w praktyce współistnieją w określonych relacjach zależnościowych. Praca biograficzna małżonków i pozostałych członków rodziny rozpatrywana na poziomie indywidualnym zachowuje łączność symboliczną z biografiami małżeńską i rodzinną. Autokreacja małżonków zachodzi na podłożu ich autorefleksyjnego odniesienia się do własnej biografii zorientowanego prospektywnie. Rodzicielstwo wreszcie rozpatrywane jako proces osiągania dojrzałości rodzica w wieloaspektowo ujmowanym towarzyszeniu dziecku może się urzeczywistniać na podłożu jego osobowej autokreacji do rodzicielstwa.
The article discusses the specificity of coexistence and mutual relations between several meaningful categories: parenthood, self-creation and biography. These reflections take place in several planes oriented at capturing the essence: a) parenthood recognized as a process of realization of the dynamic value of accompanying a child, b) self-creation included in the lifelong plan of personal development of an adult in the context of his aspiration to be and become a parent, c) the integral nature of the relationship between individual and collective (community) biography and adult self-creation taking place in the space of married and family community, d) the biographical dimension of self-creation to biological and adoptive parenthood. The aim of the article is to present the arguments justifying the thesis that these categories not only coexist, but in practice coexist in specific relationships. The biographical work of spouses and other family members considered on an individual level maintains a symbolic link with marital and family biographies. The self-creation of spouses takes place on the basis of their self-reflexive reference to their own biography oriented prospectively. Finally, parenthood, considered as the process of reaching maturity as a parent in the multi-faceted companionship of a child, can be realized on the basis of their personal self-creation to parenthood.

The article is devoted to biographical writing, which by the methodologies of the 20th century was thrown out of the field of humanities research. It returns in the new century with cultural anthropology, gender studies and – above all – memory studies. However, it raises a lot of questions, including doubts about the representation (author of the biography) and witnesses of events. The author of the article compares the work of a biographer with the work of an archaeologist who verifies the sources and reconstructs the whole on the basis of the background and contexts of time and place. In the biographer’s work, however, he notices one more element: research subjectivity, which in a world filled with nostalgia, we are not able to negate or eliminate.

The article describes an innovative method of qualitative research called collective biography writing (CBW), which is not known at all in the pedagogical research of the region of Central and Eastern Europe. CBW is focused on intensively felt, suggestive memories which are analysed collectively according to a given methodological procedure. CBW may be applied to discover complex conditioning and contexts of individual’s functioning, thanks to which we may try to answer the questions about what we really know about ourselves, others and the reality. The ultimate aim of using CBW is the exposure of what “life” as such looks like, how the world functions, what reality is like and what happens in it – the aim is understanding.

This article explores the use of biographies in qualitative research about collective memory. It is argued that commemorative ceremonies, as well as changes appearing in macro-level structures within the time-span of individuals’ life histories need to be included when analyzing biographies in collective memory studies. The article suggests enhancement of the biographical case reconstruction method (Rosenthal 1993; 2004) with two additional stages: analysis of the experienced past with more emphasis on socio-historical transformations; and inclusion and analysis of the ethnographical data collected from collective mnemonic practices. By providing empirical data from the research conducted with political exiles in Germany, these analytical steps of the method of socio-historical analysis are demonstrated in detail.

Pamięć wymaga nośników (miejsc) pamięci, elementów służących przypominaniu, ulokowanych poza ludzkim umysłem, w przestrzeni, w której dana zbiorowość funkcjonuje. Takie formy upamiętniania mogą zostać zgrupowane w system – szlak kulturowy, który racjonalnie skonstruowany stanowiłby modelowy przykład kompleksowego i efektywnego zarządzania pamięcią o artyście. Szlaki dedykowane postaciom ze świata kultury nadal należą do rzadkości, choć ze względu na zasięg oddziaływania i różnorodność obiektów wchodzących w ich skład stanowią najlepszy kanał kreowania wizerunku i promocji artysty, obejmujący zarówno miejsca autentyczne, które są upamiętniane, jak i przestrzeń, której dopiero zostaną instytucjonalnie nadane formy pamiętania.
Memory requires carriers (places) of memory, elements aimed at reminding, located outside the human mind, in space, where a given community operates. Such forms of commemoration can be grouped into a system – a cultural route, which, rationally constructed, would be a model of a comprehensive and efficient management of the memory of an artist. Routes dedicated to the figures from the world of culture are still rare, although, due to the extent of the impact and variety of the objects belonging to them, they are the best way to create the images of an artist and to promote them, including both authentic places that are commemorated and space which will be institutionally given forms of remembering.

This article is an excerpt of biographical research carried out among el- derly people living in rural areas of Beskid Sądecki. The research addressed the memory of the war and post-war times. The memory of this period is an important component of the respondents’ lives, through which their experience, both personal and collective, is constituted.

This essay is inspired by a close reading of the recently published volume Żołnierze ludowego Wojska Polskiego. Historie mówione (Soldiers of the Polish people’s Army. Oral histories) by Jarosław Pałka and Kaja Kaźmierska (Łódź, 2018) and continuously refers to it. Rather than a standard book review, it is a critical essay which positions this publication, and the documentation project standing behind it, in the context of Polish oral history research field. The latter has been expanding dynamically in recent years, gaining more and more recognition also among academic historians. One of its essential characteristics, to which this volume attests, is its methodological anchoring in biographical sociology. This field of research has a long academic tradition in Poland (though its current versions tend to adopt ‘Western’ ideas and research patterns) and offers scientific credibility to, still often insecure, oral history research. The text claims that scientific legitimisation of this kind does not necessarily lead to a convincing interpretation. The method, no matter how neutrally it may be presented, is not free from the authors’ value judgements and non-source-based historical knowledge (and imagination). The text, therefore, suggests a reading of the book – which is vastly a selection of edited, historically footnoted and narratively ordered oral history sources (biographical narrative interviews with the title soldiers) – that partly goes against the authors’ interpretations. Altogether, it makes up an exercise in (oral) historical hermeneutics.
