 Choroba Parkinsona jest jedną z najczęstszych chorób neurozwyrodnieniowych. Podstawowymi objawami choroby Parkinsona są bradykinezja, drżenie i sztywność plastyczna. Społeczne badania naukowe nad doświadczaniem chorób przewlekłych koncentrują się bezpośrednio na kluczowych graczach w służbie zdrowia – ludziach chorych. Badacze zdrowia, praktycy i decydenci mogą twierdzić, że reprezentują obawy pacjentów, rzadko jednak uwypuklają opinie na temat doświadczenia pacjentów w zakresie opieki zdrowotnej, a tym bardziej w odniesieniu do tego, co oznacza życie z chorobą przewlekłą. Celem badań było rozpoznanie i przedstawienie ich społecznego świata na podstawie narracji będącej subiektywną rekonstrukcją ich historii życia. Do badań wykorzystano autobiograficzny wywiad narracyjny zaproponowany przez Schützego, który opracował metodę jako spójną koncepcję badań biograficznych. Zebrany materiał empiryczny (44 wywiady) został poddany analizie, co umożliwiło udzielenie odpowiedzi na postawione pytania i sformułowanie wniosków, to zaś pozwoliło na wzbogacenie posiadanej wiedzy o jakościowy aspekt analizy. Badania nad chorobą przewlekłą ukazują, jak ludzie postrzegają siebie jako osoby przewlekle chore i jak choroba wpływa na ich życie.
Parkinson’s disease is one of the most frequent neurodegenerative disorders. The core symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are bradykinesia, tremor and plastic rigidity. Social scientific research on experiencing chronic illness focuses directly on pivotal players in health care – people who are sick. Health researchers, practitioners and policy makers may claim to represent patients’ concerns. However, they seldom obtain systematic “in-depth” views of patients’ experience of health care, much less of what it means to live with continued illness. The aim of the study was to recognize and present their social world on the basis of a narrative which is a subjective reconstruction of their life history. The technique of an autobiographical narrative interview was used for the research, as proposed by Schütz, who developed the method as a cohesive concept of biographical research. The collected empirical material (44 interviews) was analyzed, providing answers to the posed questions and allowing the formulation of conclusions, which made it possible to enrich the existing knowledge with the qualitative aspect of the analysis. The research on experiencing chronic illness emphasizes how people come to view themselves as chronically ill and how illness affects their lives.

This paper aims to reconstruct the biographical work (Corbin and Strauss) undertaken by parents of non-normative people. The initiating event of biographical work is the disclosure of a non-normative sexual orientation and/or gender identity by the child. For many parents, this is an event that causes a breakdown of previous schemes of action, a gradual loss of control, and suffering. The empirical data consist of autobiographical narratives of parents of people with non-normative sexual orientation and/or gender identity. The study involved mothers and fathers residing throughout Poland, who were selected according to the snowball procedure. The data were collected through the narrative interview technique and compiled according to the analytical procedure proposed by Fritz Schütze, which is part of the interpretative research paradigm. In the course of four parallel biographical processes (contextualizing, coming to terms, reconstituting identity, and recasting biography), the new experience is integrated into the biography, its consequences are understood and accepted, a coherent identity is reconstituted and a new course for one’s life are charted. The analysis of the narrators’ biographical work has made it possible to identify three categories that organize the course of the parents’ lives and identities—stigma, normalization, and activism.

This article aims to answer the question of the biographical meaning of the pandemic in the experiences of so-called “essential workers” who performed their duties in the first line of struggle with the consequences of the COVID-19 health crisis. The analysis of workers’ experiences helps us contribute to the ongoing debates on the role of macro-level events in autobiographical storytelling and the discussion on biographical turning points in sociology. The empirical analysis is based on a collection of more than 80 biographical narrative interviews in healthcare, social care, education, and logistics, from which we selected two stories of the pivotal significance of the pandemic crisis for biographical change for analysis. Biographical analysis makes it possible to describe which conditions are conducive to the inclusion of the pandemic in the main biographical story as a turning point.

This review article discusses two newly-released publications on communist women activists: Kristen Ghodsee’s Red Valkyries: Feminist Lessons from Five Revolutionary Women and The Palgrave Handbook of Communist Women Activists around the World, edited by Francisca de Haan. It focuses on questions of narrative and the persuasive function of the reviewed works, asking how and for whom one should write about communist women today. It brings to light methodological challenges, as well as those related to access to sources on communist women. It also reflects on the place that publications which tell stories of communist women who challenged gender, class, and racial inequalities in the past occupy in the perception of contemporary readers, so often confronted in these times with experiences of inequality and violence.

The subject matter tackled by Jakub Gałęziowski in his latest book Nieopowiedziane biografie. Polskie dzieci urodzone z powodu wojny [Untold biographies. Polish children born because of war — CBOW] includes testimonies of people who were conceived during the Second World War. An important aspect, however, is that these children were born from unions between the occupants and local women. The act itself may have been voluntary or forced, and the book refers only to the latter. The book is an important attempt to fill a large research gap that could not be filled for many years, due to communist rule in Poland as well as the women themselves or surrogate families concealing the truth.

The paper presents the results of the analysis of 25 biographical narrative interviews conducted between 2020–2021 with people from working-class backgrounds who, in the process of becoming academic workers, experienced the costs of cultural mobility. International literature suggests that upward mobility is not only a source of satisfaction or prestige but also suffering for academics from the unprivileged classes. Therefore, in our paper, we aim to answer two research questions: (1) what adaptation strategies do academics from the working-class use to deal with difficult experiences?, and (2) what resources do they mobilize at different stages of life (childhood, school years, the beginning of a research career) to implement these strategies? The analysis of empirical material allowed us to distinguish a number of practices that, in the long term, enabled the interviewees to develop an academic career, e.g., collaboration with “significant others” (of higher social positions), hiding deficits of a capital, context-dependent manifestation of various sets of cultural practices, or the rebellion against the rules and norms present in the family or academic environment. Based on these practices, we define six categories of adaptation strategies: “hacking the system”, “hyper-productivity”, “borrowing capital”, “class manoeuvring”, “indirect career path”, and “resistance”.

The paper reconstructs the ways of attributing meanings to IT specialists’ careers at BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) centers in Poland. The findings rely on empirical data, collected through autobiographical narrative interviews. The technique of analysis applied in the study was inspired by grounded theory methodology and allowed for the identification of a basic social process at the analytical stage, namely, “career planning.” On the one hand, the analysis also showed how IT specialists’ careers are given meanings concerning career planning; there seem to be three main ways of understanding one’s career in IT: (1) in terms of reaching economic and social stability, (2) as a transition period in a career as an IT specialist, (3) with regard to becoming an expert in IT. On the other hand, the second axis of analysis has been conceptualized, which is comprised of other subjective and objective elements that may shape career planning. These include the biographical experiences of work, the context of the Polish BPO industry, and career planning resources. Furthermore, a typology consisting of three ways of attributing meanings to IT specialists’ careers at BPO centers has been put forward and analyzed.

The article is about the works of Kazimierz Braun - stage director, expert in the field of theatre, author of literary works. It recalls this artist and researcher as a theatre authority, but also it shows the authorities that formed him as an artist. Moreover, this text reveals the meaning of the figure of authority in Braun’s literature on the example of the biographical dramas he wrote. The main purpose of this article is to analyse the influence of authorities on Braun’s understanding of artistic activity, his creative strategy and its implementation in selected cultural texts. W artykule autorka podejmuje próbę spojrzenia na etap edukacji szkolnej oczami młodych Malgaszy. W tym celu prezentuje wyniki wstępnych badań biograficznych, osadzonych w nurcie metodologii indygenicznej, przeprowadzonych wśród malgaskich maturzystów w dwóch wybranych liceach na Madagaskarze. Uczniowie zostali poproszeni o napisanie esejów na temat historii ich edukacji. Z esejów biograficznych młodych Malgaszy wyłania się wspólna narracja zogniskowana wokół trzech etapów edukacji – szkoły podstawowej, gimnazjum i liceum. W narracjach młodzieży, obok trudnych doświadczeń związanych z edukacją i życiem rodzinnym, jako szczególnie trudny ukazywany jest okres dojrzewania przypadający zazwyczaj na okres nauki w gimnazjum.
In this article, the author attempts to look at the stage of schooling through the eyes of young Malagasy people. To this end, she presents the results of a preliminary biographical study, embedded in the current of indigeneous methodology, conducted among Malagasy senior students in two selected high schools in Madagascar. The students were asked to write essays on the history of their education. The biographical essays of the students tell a common narrative centred around three stages of education: primary school, middle school, and secondary school. The young people tell about difficult situations in their education and family life, paying particular attention to adolescence.

Alan Alexander Milne jest znany przede wszystkim jako autor czterech książek dla dzieci – dwóch tomików wierszy, When We Were Very Young (1924) i Now We Are Six (1927), a także dwóch zbiorów opowiadań, Winnie-the-Pooh (1926) i The House at Pooh Corner (1928). W każdym z tych dzieł pojawia się postać inspirowana synem pisarza, Christopherem Robinem Milne’em. W Wielkiej Brytanii i Stanach Zjednoczonych już krótko po publikacji największym zainteresowaniem cieszyły się wiersze, sławę zaś zdobył przede wszystkim Christopher Robin. Jak po latach komentował to sam autor: „[…] to nie o spotkanie ze mną, ale z Christopherem Robinem podnosili krzyk Amerykanie; i właściwie (trzeba to w końcu przyznać) to nie ja ani nie wydawcy, ale Christopher Robin sprzedawał tę książkę w tak dużych i absurdalnych liczbach”. I to właśnie Christopherowi (Robinowi) poświęcony zostaje niniejszy artykuł – postaci, którą proponuję nazywać postacią sylleptyczną. Zbadane tu zostają związki rzeczywistości i fikcji, to, jakie wydarzenia z życia stanowiły inspirację dzieł literackich, ale i to, jak dzieła te wpłynęły na losy pisarza i jego syna.
Alan Alexander Milne is known primarily as an author of four books for children – two volumes of poetry, When We Were Very Young (1924) and Now We Are Six (1927), and also two collections of stories, Winnie-the-Pooh (1926) and The House at Pooh Corner (1928). In each of these works appears a character inspired by the writer’s son, Christopher Robin Milne. In Great Britain and the United States shortly after the release the poems commanded a lot of interest and fame was won primarily by Christopher Robin. As the writer said himself after years: “[…] it was Christopher Robin, not I, whom Americans were clamouring to see; and, in fact (to make due acknowledgement at last), it was Christopher Robin, not I, not the publishers, who was selling the book in such large and ridiculous quantities”. And it is to Christopher (Robin) that this article is devoted – the character I propose to call a sylleptic character. It examines the relationship between reality and fiction, what events from life inspired the literary works, but also how these works influenced the life of the writer and his son.

Autor, recenzując książkę Lucyny Marzec, Papiery po Iłłakowiczównie. Archiwum jako przedmiot badań, podkreśla jej innowacyjność oraz sprawne połączenie praktyki i teorii badania archiwum na przykładzie konkretnego przypadku (archiwum Kazimiery Iłłakowiczówny), który generował szereg pytań, wątpliwości oraz koncyliacyjnych rozwiązań. Okażą się one pomocne przyszłym eksploratorom próbującym mierzyć się z archiwaliami pisarek i pisarzy. Marzec z pietyzmem rekonstruuje biografię autorki Szeptem oraz własne przygody wiążące się z koniecznością długotrwałego obcowania z archiwum i jego zawartością. Książka badaczki sytuuje się na przecięciu badań (auto)biograficznych i archiwalnych, dlatego konieczne było obudowanie rozważań nad spuścizną poetki ramą teoretyczną, która uwzględniałaby zarówno praktyki archiwizacyjne i możliwe scenariusze zachowań wobec tajemnic, autokorekt poetki, jak również praktyki autobiograficzne, które z rozmysłem stosowała Iłłakowiczówna, by utrwalić określony wizerunek. Autor recenzji komentuje nie tylko sposób, w jaki Marzec bada tytułowe „papiery”, lecz również liczne komentarze dotyczące warunków, jakie należy spełnić, by zadanie pisania biografii powiodło się. Książka Marzec może być wzorem dla kolejnych badaczek i badaczy oraz interesującą propozycją biografii pisanej z wnętrza archiwum, składającej się z wątków ogniskujących się wokół wszystkich działań pisarki należącej do kanonu literatury XX wieku.
Upon reviewing the book by Lucyna Marzec Papiery po Iłłakowiczównie. Archiwum jako przedmiot badań, the author emphasizes its originality and an apt combination of the practice and theory of archive research based on a specific case study (the archive of Kazimiera Iłłakowiczówna), which has raised a number of questions and doubts as well as prompted many conciliatory solutions. These solution may prove helpful to future scholars attempting to grapple with both women and men writers’ archives. Marzec meticulously reconstructs the biography of the author of Szeptem, as well as she gives account of her own adventures in dealing with the archive and its contents over a long period of time. The researcher’s book is situated at the intersection of (auto)biographical and archival research, necessitating a theoretical framework ample enough to accommodate both archival practices and possible scenarios of dealing with the poet’s secrets and self-corrections, as well as the autobiographical practices that Iłłakowiczówna deliberately employed in order to reinforce a particular image of herself. The author of the review comments not only on the way in which Marzec examines the ‘papers’ mentioned in the title, but also on the numerous comments concerning the prerequisites for a successful biography. Marzec’s book may serve as a model for subsequent researchers and an interesting proposal of a biography launched from the depths of the archive, featuring all the hallmarks of literary practices enshrined as the canon of the twentieth century.

The article presents the research project “Pandemic diaries” carried out by a team working under the scientific supervision of prof. Wiesław Gumuła. The project was implemented in cooperation with the Institute of Literature in Krakow, which in 2020 announced a literary competition for journals that were to be devoted to everyday life in pandemic conditions. Researchers adopted the theoretical perspective of the sociology of everyday life and the phenomenological one. The analysis concerned the categories appearing in dailies such as social change, social relations, time, death, tourism, economy and economy, and many others. The diaries have literary value and contain important social content that has become the subject of sociological analyzes broadening the knowledge about people’s lives in conditions of sudden and unexpected change.

In this paper, we analyze the narrative strategies employed by horse racing gamblers in the context of their interactions within interviews. The empirical base consisted of 20 semi-structured interviews conducted with long-term regular gamblers from Warsaw, Poland. First, we state our position in the context of interviews with people aware they may be assessed negatively regarding a very important part of their lives. Second, we discuss how the interlocutors presented their biographies and employed discursive methods of protection against negative interpretation. The research reveals how bettors justify their passion by referring to individual myths about the origins of their interest in gambling. We reveal how bettors consciously employ emotive discursive methods that alleviate the discourse of addiction. Emotions are not presented as triggered by compulsively realized needs but as a result of intellectual passion, pursued by like-minded people joined by a drive for agency.

The article offers an analysis of living with a fat body and ways of experiencing it in everyday life in the context of stigmatization of this type of corporality. Biographical interviews with fat people of varying socio-demographic profiles were conducted. The analyses show that having a fat body/being fat is generally a stigma that discredits the individual in the eyes of the so-called normals based on both physical characteristics and character traits allegedly associated with fatness. The participants mainly medicalize and internalize the stigma of fatness and manage it specifically by passing, covering, and coming out. In transgender people, fatness may never take on the characteristics of a stigma, but instead allows the individual to obscure another stigma or conform to social expectations of appearance in line with the gender identity.
