Professor Leon Koj presented his views on the nature of beliefs in some his papers. This article refers and discusses some main theses of Koj’s conception of belief. Koj treated beliefs as a kind of thinking and stressed a role of spontaneous beliefs a base of knowledge. This kind of belief does not require a justification until a change in belief is on offer.

The author recalls the controversy over the definability or indefinability of he concept of knowledge, more exactly, of the concept 'knows that', and presents a catalogue of arguments in favour of its indefinability. The main part of the article is a critical discussion of T. Ciecierski's (2013) view of what he calls "nastawienia sądzeniowe" (roughly, "belief attitudes") as being based on what he is prepared to dub an "elementary" truth, viz. the would-be truth of the claim that 'know that' is doxastically definable.

The interesting problem of the Book of Job is the „sin” of Job’s friends. What wrong did they say that Job was to pray that God would forgive them? Why their sober words were considered by God as sinful while Job’s speeches, full of anger, were judged as proper? The answer lies in the context - not in the text only.

Opis:
This article examines Plato’s remarks on compassion to show that his apparent rejection of this emotion is, in fact, a rejection of a kind of ill-founded compassion. In the first section, I argue that his criticisms in the Apology and the Republic are not directed to compassion per se, but to instances in which this emotion betrays false beliefs and is felt in improper contexts. Thus, Plato’s criticisms leave room for an appropriate type of pity that should be grounded on true beliefs about harm, virtue, and justice. In the second section, I address Plato’s remarks on compassion in the Gorgias and the Laws, where he asserts that it should be felt towards the unpunished wrongdoer. I argue that such a disposition to feel compassion appropriately - which I have called a “noble compassion”, akin to the “noble anger” (θυμός γενναῖος) present in the Laws – is an important feature of the character of an ideal citizen. Thus, for Plato, compassion could contribute to psychological well-being and social order. By inspecting the cognitive and contextual conditions that enable a noble compassion in Platonic philosophy, this article aims to contribute to the study of a crucial emotion both in Greek and Christian philosophy.

As the Church follows the call of John Paul II for a New Evangelization, she must consider how the individual person actually comes to belief. Bl. John Henry Newman, soon to be canonized, addressed this question in An Essay in Aid of A Grammar of Assent. According to Newman, religious belief is not just a logical acceptance of intellectual propositions. It is a commitment of the whole person to God, according to the image of God formed in the person’s imagination. (The imagination is that faculty possessed by every human person, which coordinates real life experiences and allows the person to comprehend the real world around him).It is by intentionally employing the imagination, rather than demonstrative logic, that the human person arrives at a belief that is well-grounded, neither cold nor fanatical. Accordingly, our evangelical activity, while never neglecting the truth of the Gospel, should seek to engage the senses and feelings of the human person and not merely the intellect.

Biologically inspired artificial neural networks have been widely used for machine learning tasks such as object recognition. Deep architectures, such as the Convolutional Neural Network, and the Deep Belief Network have recently been implemented successfully for object recognition tasks. We conduct experiments to test the hypothesis that certain primarily generative models such as the Deep Belief Network should perform better on the occluded object recognition task than purely discriminative models such as Convolutional Neural Networks and Support Vector Machines. When the generative models are run in a partially discriminative manner, the data does not support the hypothesis. It is also found that the implementation of Gaussian visible units in a Deep Belief Network trained on occluded image data allows it to also learn to effectively classify non-occluded images.

This paper focuses on naďve theories, illusions, and misconceptions regarding the outcome of men’s cigarette smoking on female impressions. Beliefs about those outcomes were examined in a correlational study and their content was compared with the results of previous experimental verifi cation. Male and female participants (N = 396) responded to an advertisement placed on an online general-interest forum and completed a questionnaire concerning their beliefs about the impact of cigarette smoking in men on their self-presentation to women. This included impressions of attractiveness, intelligence, strength, sexiness, and other male qualities. Results show that people believe that smoking decreases a man’s perceived aptitude for being a woman’s long-term partner. The belief that smoking enhances a man’s attractiveness to a woman as a short-term partner was limited to female smokers. Non-smokers believed that smoking in men signals poor impulse-control. Gender, age, smoking status (smoker vs non-smoker), and number of cigarettes smoked daily appeared to play an important role in predicting expressed beliefs. Young female smokers were indicated as the subgroup bearing the most optimistic illusions.

Hutsebaut and his colleagues (1996, 2000; Fontaine et al., 2003) constructed the Post-Critical Belief Scale (PCBS) in order to measure the two dimensions along which Wulff (1991) summarized the various possible approaches to religion: Exclusion vs. Inclusion of Transcendence and Literal vs. Symbolic Interpretation. In the present article, the internal structure of the Polish version of the scale is analyzed. The results obtained in ten Polish samples (N = 1775) suggest that the internal structure of the Polish version partially reflects the assumed theoretical structure of PCBS. Furthermore, the results of principal component analysis and reliability analysis are presented in the article.

The article discusses the main strategies of immunization of religious beliefs and belief systems. It focuses on the logical and epistemological characteristics of religious beliefs as well as on the mental processes and intentional strategies. The immunization strategies discussed here include action such as delegitimization of scientific knowledge, reinterpretations that change the way religion and religious faith are understood, attempts to adapt scientific knowledge to religious thinking, and emphasizing the separation between scientific knowledge and religious faith.

This argument rests on the fact of the progress of civilization, which appears, as I try to demonstrate, not to be possible without de dicto beliefs constituting a key part of the mental processes of the inventor. My argument is to counterweigh the force of Tyler Burge’s argument for the fundamentality of de re beliefs, leading to the conclusion that beliefs de re are a necessary condition of language understanding and having propositional attitudes at all (Burge 1977, p. 347-348). The first part of the paper is devoted to the examination of the structure of different versions of transcendental arguments – objective and subjective, the second part focuses on an analysis of Burge’s argument from language understanding, while the aim of the third part is to present the Reader with the argument from the progress of civilization. The exposition of the argument is followed by a discussion of certain possible objections which the argument may face.

In the epilogue of his work, Wulff (1999) presented the concept of post- -critical beliefs as a proposal for the description of religion in the context of continuous secularization processes and socio-cultural changes. According to Wulff (1999), we may place potential attitudes toward religion in a two-dimensional space in which the vertical dimension means Inclusion vs. Exclusion of Transcendence and the horizontal one-Literal vs. Symbolic Interpretation of religion. The presented research is an attempt to find out whether emotions toward God are related to the attitudes toward religion separated by Wulff. The results of our research show that Orthodoxy and Second Naiveté correlate positively with Positive Emotions and Sense of Guilt whereas External Critique and Relativism correlate positively with Anger toward God.

Exploring the idea of a more practical relationship between the agent and his own mental life leaves room for reconsidering the relevance of the familiar analogy between reasons for belief and reasons for action. Even if their difference is usually admitted, they are also treated as equivalent, in the sense that the connection between reasons to believe and the arising belief would be analogous to the connection between reasons for action and the arising action. If such an analogy might be relevant to a certain extent in the frame of a theoretical stance towards oneself, I'll argue that it cannot be maintained once we have put the agent at the heart of self-knowledge.

The aim of the study was to measure the association among Health Belief Model (HBM) variables and self-reported physical activity of young adults. A survey research protocol was employed. Participants were 391 university students (245 females), 19–22 years old (–x = 21.41±3.49). Analyses revealed that the strongest predictor of physical activity is self-efficacy, followed by perceived benefits and the perceived barriers. Other HBM variables, such as the perceived susceptibility or perceived severity, were not associated with physical activity. On the basis of the obtained results it may be concluded that the HBM as a model of avoiding diseases is not adequate to explain and predict physical activity of young adults.

This paper investigates different accounts of the distance between religious and nonreligious persons, postulated by Wittgenstein in his Lectures on Religious Belief: the hypothesis that religious and nonreligious language is incommensurable, the supposition about “ordinary” and “extraordinary” uses of word “belief,” and the non-cognitive approach to religious language. I argue (after Cora Diamond) that none of these accounts can be regarded as sufficient, because the text of Lectures does not contain any general theory of disagreement between believer and nonbeliever. Instead of that, Wittgenstein offers a picture of several different relationships that may occur between them.

The aim of this research is to analyze anxiety, knowledge, and belief toward e-learning acceptance, especially by science teachers in high schools in Aceh, Indonesia. About 117 teachers were randomly selected for this study. A questionnaire was used to collect data, and analyzed using the Likert scale. The results indicate that most teachers view the use of e-learning in teaching science to be positive. Despite the fact that only half of them are knowledgeable in the use of media and have concerns about some negative effects of e-learning on students, they still believed in the usefulness of e-learning in science education. Hence, more related research is recommended to further corroborate the findings of this study.

The author draws on several literary and philosophical approaches to bring out some of the themes embedded in Pascal’s wager, such as: the world as an arena of one’s confrontation with one’s vision of oneself; the notions of ‘here’ and ‘there’ in relation to the intuition of the immortality of the individual human soul; God as an answer to human longing for a Witness; belief in God as ultimate concern for human life; the transnatural destiny of the human person. These existential insights are complemented by the analytical considerations and criticism of Pascal’s wager put forward by Richard Swinbume in his book Faith and Reason (2005). Swinburne’s inquiry pivots around the problem of a person’s responsibility for the beliefs he/she holds and what it means to be rational. The purpose of the article is to actualize the question: What is the stake in Pascal’s wager?

Niewierzących znamionuje większy relatywizm i liberalizm moralny.
Author gives here the synthesis of the characteristics of religious faith Poles viewed in terms of the research workshop of sociologist. It shows that the belief is one of the indicators of religiosity and does not deplete the multidimensional nature of the latter. In the light of the research the faith of Poles is shown against the system of their life values. It turns out that faith is quite important, but not the most and the importance of it is a downward trend. In this case it is common to the Poles confess to the faith. It is also strongly marked that faith is very selective – part of it is the Church’s deposit and part of is rejected. In this way, half of declaring themselves as believers actually believe in their own way. Believers and non-believers are in fact quite similar in hierarchy of values. They differ primarily in the moral options in bioethics requirements and in the field of sexual ethics in marriage. Non-believers are marked by greater moral relativism and liberalism.

The main goal of this paper is to explicate the meaning of such words as “reason”, ”knowledge” and “faith.” In addition, some relationships between these notions are analysed. Two attitudes can be distinguished: “faith — reason/knowledge” and “reason/knowledge – faith”. In the first case faith is initial, but a believer can take a rational (intellectual) effort to analyse what faith is. The second attitude is realised in the rational search to find faith. Many different types of arguments for the sentence “God exists” have been invented over years. These arguments have been the tools used in the cases of both attitudes. The arguments are analysed and discussed. The notion of argument is related to the notion of persuasion. Some different situa- tions can be distinguished: a claim is rightly argued and somebody is persuaded by this claim; a claim is rightly argued, but somebody is not persuaded; a claim is not rightly argued, but some- body is persuaded by such a claim (e.g. by an influential leader); and a claim is not rightly argued and somebody is not persuaded. The attitude “faith — reason/knowledge” (a religious attitude) is existential and practical. It con- sists of some components. One of them is a religious knowledge (doctrine). If a believer confesses his or her faith using the official (institutional) text — called in Latin Credo (The Creed) — then really they believe and accept a set of rational religious beliefs, which belong to the religious knowledge (doctrine). A religious faith, understood as God’s influence, is acknowledged as the basis for such an act of believing and accepting. So the religious attitude consists of a religious faith, beliefs, emotions and also free choice (decision, acceptance). The act of an acceptance does not only concern beliefs. A believer also ac- cepts moral and religious rules (principles). This is the type of morality motivated by religion. A re- ligious attitude is the rational, theoretical and practical synthesis of all these components.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediational role of relational psychological contract in social beliefs and work input attitude dependency. We analyzed data taken from employees (N = 258) in four different organizations operating in the Pomeranian market. A mediation analysis showed a strongly mediating role of psychological contract in the negative relationship between perception of life as a zero-sum game (BZSG) and work input. The motivational effect of the relational psychological contract, that is the role of job security, interesting work, a career in the company, opportunities for promotion and other HRM practices prevail over the significance of personal beliefs, especially when these are negative. If the company lacks the appropriate HRM systems then day-to-day social exchanges can be crucial in modifying the social beliefs of the employee.

The main objective of this study was to examine whether children’s ability to justify their action predictions in terms of mental states is related, in a similar way as the ability to predict actions, to such aspects of executive function (EF) as executive control and working memory. An additional objective was to check whether the frequency of different types of justifications made by children in false-belief tasks is associated with aforementioned aspects of EF, as well as language. The study included 59 children aged 3-4 years. The ability to predict actions and to justify these predictions was measured with false-belief tasks. Luria’s hand-game was used to assess executive control, and the Counting and Labelling dual-task was used to assess working memory capacity. Language development was controlled using an embedded syntax test. It was found that executive control was a significant predictor of the children’s ability to justify their action predictions in terms of mental states, even when age and language were taken into account. Results also indicated a relationship between the type of justification in the false-belief task and language development. With the development of language children gradually cease to justify their action predictions in terms of current location, and they tend to construct irrelevant justifications before they begin to refer to beliefs. Data suggest that executive control, in contrast to language, is a factor which affects the development of the children’s ability to justify their action predictions only in its later phase, during a shift from irrelevant to correct justifications.

Belief legends, especially those regarding fear and its realization, transformation and embodiment, are important narrative substrate. Forms of belief legends and/or their segments are often, in many ways and functions, intertextually inscribed in Croatian novelistic production. This paper shall analyse the way in which the motifs and topics related to the belief legends, as well as their development: defining and unmasking fear, are employed in the novels Živi i mrtvi (The Living and the Dead) by Josip Mlakić and Črna mati zemla (Black Mother Earth) by Kristian Novak. In the novel Živi i mrtvi, the elements of the belief legends poetically recreate a strong sense of horror of war, here represented through the growing fear felt by a small isolated group made up of a couple of soldiers. A different type of terror, a personal trauma that leaves the under-aged protagonist of Črna mati zemla completely isolated from the world and his loved ones, is poetically recreated especially through some of the elements of the belief legends.

This article develops a conception of linguistic meaning that treats it as an attitude on the part of language users towards pairs of expressions. As with propositional attitudes, these meaning attitudes are subject to being deliberately altered over time by language users, with the aim of maximizing the efficiency of their language use. Therefore, meaning attitudes can be justified or refuted in practical terms. Our instrumentalist-coherentist approach, which allows for meanings to be advocated for alongside beliefs, provides a viable theory of justification of that kind. This view fits better with the evolutionary nature of linguistic phenomena, and resolves the problem of substitutability in opaque contexts.

The issue of rationality of religious beliefs belongs to the main problems of 20th century philosophy of religion. When posing this problem the term `rationality' is often used in a way that is not precise, and sometimes it seems to be ambiguous. In order to avoid this error I define rationality of acceptance regulatively as a property consisting in being in accordance with defined epistemic rules of the ethics of beliefs. The main rule that is taken into consideration here is the following requirement: `Each theorem p accepted by person S should be justifiable by her in a degree proportional to the degree of assertion with which he accepts p'. Acceptances having the property of so defined rationality belong to a broader class of reasonable acts, where rationality is understood as a property consisting in being a reliable use of human cognitive abilities. I claim that although the religious faith of a `common' Christian is not rational in this sense, as mysteries of faith are not justifiable by natural reason, it has a reasonable character and is precious from the epistemic point of view. I defend the proposition that the fact of not being rational in this particular sense does not involve irrationality that consists in breaking the rule that orders a change in the way of accepting a certain theorem p so as to adjust the degree of assertion to the justification one has, the borderline case being one of rejecting the theorem for which one does not have any epistemically valid justification. The proposition that one of these rules is obligatory for the believer with respect to his acceptance of the propositions of faith cannot be justified without stating that Christianity is false. This latter proposition cannot be proved philosophically.

The demands on managers are changing. In an increasingly digitalized and dynamic market, very well-trained specialists are becoming scarce. Companies that compete for them must be very well positioned, especially in terms of leadership. Future-oriented leadership requires leading people men- tally. A purely fact-oriented leadership style is no longer promising. This requires a willingness to develop one’s personality and a constant readiness to change. The four-level model shows that this is only possible in the long term by stimulating the limbic system. The task of a sustainable leader is to be a relationship expert. He should learn to manage his own emotions and thus influence himself and others. Positive beliefs are a good basis for this. High own ambitions and operational pressure to perform can stand in the way. Self-reflection leads to the conso- lidation of positive behavior and correction of possible weak points. Leaders who regularly take stock of their personality and engage in critical retrospection take responsibility for themselves and the development of their employees. This is not only a question of a positive image of humanity. Leaders should also set an example in terms of resilience. One’s own health is the interaction of body and mind and the basis for performance. Leaders keep an eye on their lifestyle habits in order to remain efficient in the long term. Their own performance and that of their employees determines that of the company.

Compulsory military service has become very rare over the last 30 years in the western world. In the past, most countries considered military service as a socialisation platform, given the fact that most of the population was recruited and military units were a "meeting point" for different cultures – because of that the service then was functional as a social integrator. The current research studied changes in social attitude during compulsory military service in Israel, where the society is considered to be essentially divided around ethnical and national issues. This study is based on an analysis of the attitudes of 3200 internet questionnaire participants via social networks in Israel, followed by a U-test of the collected data. Half of the participants were high-school students (average age 17) and half of them discharged soldiers (average age 23). Analysis of the results reveals significant evidence: discharged soldiers tend to be more tolerant then high-school students with regard to other cultures and ethnic origins. A discharged IDF soldier is less afraid of security threats and considers budget prioritisation towards social welfare to be more important than security challenges. These findings show that compulsory military service can still be effective as a social integrator, even in the post-modern world where countries are dealing with migration issues and ethno-national tensions.

Classical influence diagram has parameters stable in time, determined order of suggested decisions and generally is independent of time. Here we have shown some possible methods of construction of time dependent influence diagrams: with decision ordering, time-sliced segments and time consuming nodes. Such gathering of methods can help in selection of a proper solution.

The goal of the paper is to describe the role and structure of nonfoundational reasoning, i.e. a kind of argumentation that meets the revisability, the feedback, the background stability and the disputability conditions. I begin by observing that any nonfoundational reasoning has two components: the deductive and the hermeneutic. Next, against the background of Gadamer’s insightful, although somewhat vague, observations I attempt to uncover aspects of the hermeneutic component. I then proceed to reconstruct nonfoundational argumentation with the help of formal theory of belief revision, defeasible logic, and logical conception of coherence. Finally, I argue that nonfoundational reasoning is the backbone of both scientific endeavours and philosophical inquiry.

Purpose: Breast self-examination (BSE) is a critical technique in early detection of breast diseases, especially cancer. This quasi-experimental study was performed to evaluate the effects of BSE training on health beliefs and practices among relatives of nursing students. Materials and methods: The study sample consisted of 133 relatives of nursing students. After training student nurses about BSE, they were requested to train their relatives regarding BSE. The data were collected before and 6 months after BSE training. Results: It was determined that 39.1% (n=52) of women performed BSE before the training and 87.2% (n=116) of them after the training and this difference was statistically significant (p=0.0001). Sensitivity perception (Z=-2.915, p=0.004), benefit perception (Z=-4.888, p=0.0001) and confidence perception (Z=-2.503, p=0.012) of women significantly increased and disability perception (Z=-8.576, p=0.0001) decreased significantly after the training. Conclusions: In conclusion, the BSE training given by nursing students to their relatives enhanced health beliefs and practices of the participants.

The paper aims to analyze the concept of habit in Hume and its operations in two theoretical dimensions: theory of knowledge and theory of religion. Hume considers habit as an instinctual basis for all judgments (beliefs) about the external world and also about the supposed existence of the supernatural. Hume’s thought, both in the domain of epistemology and philosophy of religion can thus be viewed as naturalized, claiming that the biological, instinctual traits of human nature are responsible for our beliefforming operations. Especially, Hume’s naturalization of religion seems to be ahead of its time and his methodological approach is now being developed by many leading anthropologists, biologists and philosophers.

Deep neural networks are often trained in two phases: first, hidden layers are pretrained in an unsupervised manner, and then the network is fine-tuned with error backpropagation. Pretraining is often carried out using Deep Belief Networks (DBNs), with initial weights set to small random values. However, recent results established that well-designed initialization schemes, e.g., Sparse Initialization (SI), can greatly improve the performance of networks that do not use pretraining. An interesting question arising from these results is whether such initialization techniques wouldn’t also improve pretrained networks. To shed light on this question, in this work we evaluate SI in DBNs that are used to pretrain discriminative networks. The motivation behind this research is our observation that SI has an impact on the features learned by a DBN during pretraining. Our results demonstrate that this improves network performance: when pretraining starts from sparsely initialized weight matrices, networks achieve lower classification errors after fine-tuning.

The four groups with the highest indices were chemists (80%), geographers and Earth scientists (76.2%), mathematicians and information technology specialists (73.1%), and medical scientists (64.5%). A small proportion of respondents (6.5%) chose the following option: “I don’t believe in a personal God but I believe in a higher power of some kind.” The percentages of atheists and agnostics were 18.3% and 7.2%, respectively. The subjects’ views on the relationship between science and religion were categorized according to the Barbour’s typology (Barbour, 1990). The largest proportion of the subjects (41.9%) denied the inevitability of conflict between science and religion; 13% held the opposite view. Some scholars (19.6%) expressed the view that science and religion should be treated as independent areas of inquiry. The relationship of dialog seemed to be the best form of their coexistence to 2% respondents, while 3.6% were in favor of the cooperation of science and religion in building a comprehensive worldview.

ObjectivesIn this study, healthcare professionals’ beliefs about sportive recreational activities were examined.Material and MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study conducted with 940 volunteer healthcare professionals. The Sociodemographic Information Form prepared by the authors and the Health-Belief Scale on Sportive Recreational Activities (HBSSRA) determined on the basis of their literature review were used to collect data.ResultsAlthough it was concluded that 72% of the healthcare professionals did not have enough free time, the participation rate in sportive recreational activities reached 71.4%. The study revealed that 44.9% of the participants preferred to engage in sportive recreational activities individually, while 55.1% wanted to do such activities in a group. It was found that 72.9% of the participants took part in sports activities for health-related reasons. The mean health-belief score of the healthcare professionals regarding recreational activities was found to be 80.38 (SD = 10.32). As this score is very close to the maximum value (105.00), it can be stated that their health beliefs are high.ConclusionsIt is understood that participation in sportive recreational activities has positive effects on individuals’ physical and mental health; however, there are also some factors that prevent individuals’ participation in such activities. The income level, the marital status, the spouse’s employment status, having children, and time spent at the place of residence are important factors preventing participation in sportive recreational activities. This study is expected to help individuals gain a perspective about participation in sportive recreational activities, and to provide more evidence in raising the awareness about the protection of individual health. In addition, it is expected to help shape the behaviors aimed at being healthy by improving one’s own health-related beliefs.

Opis:
Negotiation is an interaction that happens in multi-agent systems when agents have conflicting objectives and must look for an acceptable agreement. A typical negotiating situation involves two agents that cannot reach their goals by themselves because they do not have some resources they need or they do not know how to use them to reach their goals. Therefore, they must start a negotiation dialogue, taking also into account that they might have incomplete or wrong beliefs about the other agent’s goals and resources. This article presents a negotiating agent model based on argumentation, which is used by the agents to reason on how to exchange resources and knowledge in order to achieve their goals. Agents that negotiate have incomplete beliefs about the others, so that the exchange of arguments gives them information that makes it possible to update their beliefs. In order to formalize their proposals in a negotiation setting, the agents must be able to generate, select and evaluate arguments associated with such offers, updating their mental state accordingly. In our approach, we will focus on an argumentation-based negotiation model between two cooperative agents. The arguments generation and interpretation process is based on belief change operations (expansions, contractions and revisions), and the selection process is a based on a strategy. This approach is presented through a high-level algorithm implemented in logic programming. We show various theoretical properties associated with this approach, which have been formalized and proved using Coq, a formal proof management system. We also illustrate, through a case study, the applicability of our approach in order to solve a slightly modified version of the well-known home improvement agents problem. Moreover, we present various simulations that allow assessing the impact of belief revision on the negotiation process.

The concept of religion and of the divine is very complex; in fact, it is a human construction which is closely related to culture and its development. This is particularly clear when we consider dynamic changes in religious institutions, the Catholic Church included. The same should be said about religious experience. The religious experience was defined by William James at the beginning of the twentieth century in his classic book, The varieties of religious experience. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, Charles Taylor took up some of James’ ideas in his book Varieties of religion today. The religious context of time is present in both books, which were the outcome of the Gifford Lectures delivered at Edinburgh University. In traditional descriptions of religious phenomena, atheism and disbelief were usually not taken into account; however, the last two decades have brought a radical change. In this paper I will try to demonstrate that the postsecular context by the end of second decade of the twenty-first century gives us a new opportunity to define religious experience that allows us to overcome the traditional tension between religious and secular worldviews. I will even propose that it is possible to speak about a new paradigm in religious studies.

The Uniqueness Thesis (U), defended by the uniquer and rejected by the permissivist, asserts that, necessarily, there is at most one rational doxastic attitude one can take towards a proposition, given a particular body of evidence. U faces a well-known, paralyzing objection from the permissivist, which I call “the simplicity objection,” which rests on the idea that evidence is not the sole determinant of rationality. In this paper, after maintaining that the ongoing dialectic between the uniquer and the permissivist has led to an exaggeration of differences, I bring into focus another, non-equivalent yet substantive (non-trivial) thesis in the vicinity, which I call “the Conditional Uniqueness Thesis” (U*), according to which if evidence is the sole determinant of rationality, then U is true. The hope is to achieve a rapprochement between the uniquer and the permissivist by showing that U* is true. To this end, I examine the argument Roger White offers in favor of U, which I call “the argument from evidential support” (AES), and argue that it is both unpersuasive for the defender of the simplicity objection and unnecessarily strong for establishing its own conclusion. I then offer a sufficiently weakened version of AES, which I call AES*, and argue that AES* is sound, if interpreted as an argument for U*.

Opis:
Multi-criteria decision aid methods consider decision problems in which many alternatives are evaluated on several criteria. These methods are used to deal with perfect information. However, in practice, it is obvious that this information requirement is too strict. In fact, the imperfect data provided by more or less reliable decision makers usually affect decision results, since any decision is closely linked to the quality and availability of information. In this paper, a PROMETHEE II-BELIEF approach is proposed to help multi-criteria decisions based on incomplete information. This approach solves problems with incomplete decision matrix and unknown weights within PROMETHEE II method. On the basis of belief function theory, our approach first determines the distributions of belief masses based on PROMETHEE II’s net flows, and then calculates weights. Subsequently, it aggregates the distribution masses associated with each criterion using Murphy’s modified combination rule in order to infer a global belief structure. The final alternative ranking is obtained via pignistic probability transformation. A case study of a real-world application concerning the location of a treatment center of waste from healthcare activities with infectious risk in the center of Tunisia is studied to illustrate the detailed process of the PROMETHEE II-BELIEF approach.

When designing a cryptographic protocol or explaining it, one often uses arguments such as "since this message was signed by machine B, machine A can be sure it came from B" in informal proofs justifying how the protocol works. Since it is, in such informal proofs, often easy to overlook an essential assumption, such as a trust relation or the belief that a message is not a replay from a previous session, it seems desirable to write such proofs in a formal system. While such logics do not replace the recent techniques of automatic proofs of safety properties, they help in pointing the weaknesses of the system. In this paper, we present briefly the BAN (Burrows-Abadi-Needham) formal system [10, 11] as well as some derivative. We show how to prove some properties of a simple protocol, as well as detecting undesirable assumptions. We then explain how the manual search for proofs can be made automatic. Finally, we explain how the lack of proper semantics can be a bit worrying.

The evidentialist objection against Christianity, which states that the Christian faith does not have sufficient evidence to justify belief, can be troubling for Christians, for they do not wish to say that their beliefs are founded upon mere human evidence, and yet, they also wish to affirm that “those who place their faith in this truth, for which human reason offers no experience, do not believe lightly, as those following unlearned fables” (SCG I.6). St. Thomas Aquinas offers a unique and compelling solution to the evidentialist objection—a solution that confirms the Christian belief that faith is a gift from God, but which also respects the proper place of human reason within the believing life of men. St. Thomas teaches that God provides both internal and external confirmation of what He reveals, although only the internal confirmation of the work of the Holy Spirit is necessary to justify Christian belief. Aquinas’s teaching concerning the role of divine confirmation of revealed truths provides at least one important key to understanding the delicate balance between faith and reason within the Christian life.

The article presents an analysis of the validity and reliability of the FAD-Plus scale by D. L. Paulhus and J. M. Carey, which is used to measure beliefs in free will, determinism, and the unpredictability of events. The results of three studies are presented. Based on the results of the first study, it was found that the tool has a consistent structure and that its 3-factor 16-item version is reliable. The second study revealed positive correlations between determinism and religious fundamentalism and belief in an unjust world as well as a positive correlation between belief in unpredictability and belief in an unjust world. The correlations of belief in free will with authoritarianism, belief in an unjust world, and religious fundamentalism were not significant. The third study revealed a positive correlation between belief in free will and positive emotions, a negative correlation between belief in determinism and positive emotions, and negative correlations of belief in determinism and belief in unpredictability with life satisfaction. The analysis of the FAD-Plus scale for the Polish sample proves that the 3-factor scale (the 16-item version) consisting of subscales measuring beliefs in free will, determinism, and unpredictability, is a parametrically satisfactory tool.

Product reliability design optimization is affected by epistemic uncertainty greatly, which leaves significant risks in product use. In this paper, a new belief reliability-based design optimization (BRBDO) method under epistemic uncertainty is established to handle this problem. First, the belief reliability theory is introduced into the design optimization problem, and a quantile index is proposed to quantify belief reliability level based on uncertainty theory, through which a rapid analysis method called first order belief reliability analysis (FOBRA) method is developed. Then, according to the different trade-off strategies, two types of design optimization models are established, and corresponding FOBRA-based computation methods are also demonstrated. Finally, several case applications are studied to verify the effectiveness of the analysis and design optimization methods proposed in this paper. The results indicate that the BRODO method with the quantile index can save a lot of computational time with acceptable accuracy and can rationally cope with epistemic uncertainty.

Opis:
The paper investigates utterances which combine imperative and interrogative elements in Hungarian. We intend to explore the scope of the hypothesis that the pragmatico-semantic content of mixed-type sentences can be obtained compositionally. We present four types of interrogative imperative. The imperative factor is indicated by subjunctive morphology on the verb. The interrogative character is represented by (1) rise-fall intonation which marks polar questions, (2) the discourse marker ugye expressing bias, (3) the particle vajon expressing self-reflection or hesitation, and (4) wavy intonation which indicates surprise. We claim that such sentences are primarily questions with their main function being ‘request for instruction’. For the analysis, we take a formal pragmatico-semantic point of view. Our goal is to demonstrate how these sentences can be analyzed compositionally within a belief–desire–intention frame. We apply the formal dynamic discourse- and mind-representation theory ReALIS. We have found that the pragmatico-semantic content (intensional profile) of each type can be constructed via using two formal operations: concatenation and pragmasemantic blending. The composition produces the required output, namely that the interrogation / bias / speculation / surprise which pertains to an eventuality in the case of a simple question, pertains to the “commanding” of this eventuality in the case of interrogative imperatives.

Opis:
In most problems encountered in navigation, imprecision and uncertainty dominate. Methods of their processing rely on rather obsolete formalisms based on probability and statistics. Available solutions exploit a limited amount of available data, and knowledge is necessary to interpret the achieved results. Profound a posteriori analysis is rather limited; thus, the informative context of solutions is rather poor. Including knowledge in a nautical data processing scheme is impossible. Remaining stuck with the traditional formal apparatus, based on probability theory, one cannot improve the informative context of obtained results. Traditional approaches toward solving problems require assumptions imposed by the probabilistic model that exclude possibility of modelling uncertainty. It should be noticed that the flexibility of exploited formalism decide the quality of upgrading models and, subsequently, on the universality of the final results. Therefore, extension of the available formalisms is a challenge to be met. Many publications devoted to the mathematical theory of evidence (MTE) and its adaptation for nautical science in order to support decision making in navigational processes have enabled one to submit and defend the following proposition. Many practical problems related to navigational ship conducting and to feature uncertainty can be solved with MTE; the informative context of the obtained results is richer when compared to those acquired by traditional methods. Additionally, a posteriori analysis is an inherent feature of the new foundations. The brief characteristics of a series of publications devoted to the new methodology are the main topics of this paper.
