Opis:
Bacterial production, primary production and a number of other environmental factors were measured during six cruises in the Gulf of Gdańsk conducted in various seasons from 1995 to 2001. Bacterial production (BP) in the epipelagic layer ranged from 1.5% (April) to 80% (July) of the gross primary production (PP). Significant differences were observed between the BP/PP ratios in estuarine and open-water areas. The highest values were recorded in the coastal area and near the mouth of the river Vistula. It suggests that allochthonous organic matter has a great influence on BP. The correlations between particular parameters and regression analyses indicated that BP in the Gulf of Gdańsk depended on temperature, organic nitrogen concentration, PP, chlorophyll a concentration, organic phosphorus concentration, salinity and biochemical oxygen demand. Of all the independent variables, the temperature had the greatest impact on BP (R2 = 0.62). There was an inverse parabolic relationship between bacterial production and temperature. It appears that above a temperature of 12◦C bacterial production depended on substrates to a higher degree than on temperature. The negative correlation between BP and concentrations of mineral nitrogen and phosphorus in the annual cycle were probably due to an indirect dependence. A multiple regression equation, which included temperature and organic phosphorus concentrations, explained 78% of the variation in BP. Increasing BP resulted in an increasing biomass of bacterivorous nanoflagellates and of bacterivorous ciliates, which is indicative of bottom-up control in this segment of the trophic chain.

Opis:
Bacterial production and the accompanying environmental factors were measured in the water columns of two Arctic fjords during the cruise in July and August 2013. Water samples were collected at six stations located in the central part of Hornsund and Kongsfjorden. In Hornsund, where average water temperatures were 1.25-fold lower than in Kongsfjorden, the bacterial production was twice as high (0.116 ± 0.102 vs 0.05 ± 0.03 mg C m−3 h−1). Statistical analysis indicated that chlorophyll a concentration itself was not a significant factor that affected bacterial production, in contrast to its decomposition product, pheophytin, originating from senescent algal cells or herbivorous activity of zooplankton. Single and multiple regression analysis revealed that water temperature, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and pheophytin concentration were the main factors affecting bacterial production in both fjords.

Opis:
Application of beneficial bacterial strain B125 (Enterobacter sp.) and strain PZ9 (Bacillus sp.) in lettuce transplants production significantly enhanced seed germination and plant biomass. The best effect was obtained when the mixture of B125 and PZ9 was used. Combined application of these bacteria significantly increased transplants biomass, which was about 45% higher than that in the control. However, after planting these transplants in organic field, generally, there were no differences in yield and nutrient content in plants treated and not treated with the bacteria, except for nitrogen and vitamin C. The lettuce grown from transplants treated with bacterial mixture B125 + PZ9 contained significantly higher nitrogen than plants from other treatments. Opposite to nitrogen, bacterial applications decreased the amount of vitamin C. The growth and organic lettuce composition was affected by planting time. The yield was higher in spring, but the concentration of nutrients in these plants was lower than that in plants harvested in autumn. Climatic and light conditions in the late season were the reasons for increased dry matter content, minerals, phenolic compounds, and vitamin C, as well as high concentration of nitrates.

Opis:
Recombinant subunit vaccines based on hemagglutinin proteins produced in bacteria (bacterial HAs) are promising candidates for enhancing the supply of vaccines against influenza, especially for a pandemic. Over 20 years after the failure to obtain the antigen with native HA characteristics in the early 1980’s, there are increasing data on successful production of HA proteins in bacteria. The vast majority of bacterial HAs have been based on the HA1 subunit of HA expressed separately or as a component of conjugate vaccines, but those based on the ectodomain and the HA2 subunit have also been reported. The most of HAs have been efficiently expressed as insoluble aggregates called inclusion bodies. Refolded and purified proteins were extensively studied for structure, the ability to bind to sialic acid-containing receptors, antigenicity, immunogenicity and efficacy. The results from these studies contradict the view that glycosylation determines the correct structure of the hemagglutinin, as they proved that bacterial HAs can be valuable vaccine antigens when appropriate folding and purification methods are applied to rationally designed proteins. The best evidence for success in bacterial production of protective HA is that vaccines based on proprietary Toll-like Receptor (VaxInnate) and bacteriophage Qβ-VLPs (Cytos Biotechnology) technologies have been advanced to clinical studies.

Opis:
Microorganisms associated with aquatic macrophytes can in various ways interact with a plant and influence its activity and vice versa. A low-salinity intrusion into freshwater environment can affect plant-microorganism interactions. In this study, effects of different salinity conditions on the abundance and community composition of associated microorganisms with charophytes in the Curonian Lagoon were assessed. From the results, we found that short term salinity changes affected the abundance of bacteria and fungi associated with charophytes, whereas no response was reflected in the taxa composition of fungi, showing that other factors could be of more importance. The increased fungi abundances and different fungi composition in August in comparison to June was probably related to senescence process of aquatic vegetation. 8 fungi taxa were isolated and identified in association with charophytes, while higher diversity was revealed by DGGE technique.

Opis:
The Silurian Pelplin Formation is a part of a thick, mud-prone distal fill of the Caledonian foredeep, which stretches along the western margin of the East European Craton. The Pelplin Formation consists of organic carbon-rich mudstones that have recently been the target of intensive investigations, as they represent a potential source of shale gas. The Pelplin mudstones host numerous calcite concretions containing authigenic pyrite and barite. Mineralogical and petrographic examination (XRD, optical microscopy, cathodoluminoscopy, SEM-EDS) and stable isotope analyses (δ13Corg, δ13C and δ18O of carbonates, δ34S and δ18O of barite) were carried out in order to understand the diagenetic conditions that led to precipitation of this carbonate-sulfide-sulfate paragenesis and to see if the concretions can enhance the understanding of sedimentary settings in the Baltic and Lublin basins during the Silurian. Barite formed during early diagenesis before and during the concretionary growth due to a deceleration of sedimentation during increased primary productivity. The main stages of concretionary growth took place in yet uncompacted sediments shortly after their deposition in the sulfate reduction zone. This precompactional cementation led to preferential preservation of original sedimentary structures, faunal assemblages and earlydiagenetic barite, which have been mostly lost in the surrounding mudstones during burial. These components allowed for the reconstruction of important paleoenvironmental conditions in the Baltic and Lublin basins, such as depth, proximity to the detrital orogenic source and marine primary productivity. Investigation of the concretions also enabled estimation of the magnitude of mechanical compaction of the mudstones and calculation of original sedimentation rates. Moreover, it showed that biogenic methane was produced at an earlydiagenetic stage, whereas thermogenic hydrocarbons migrated through the Pelplin Formation during deep burial.

Opis:
Oceniono przydatność technologiczną zakwasów mezofilnych paciorkowców mlekowych namnażanych w mleku odtłuszczonym oraz w dwóch różnych podłożach wzrostowych w temp. 24 i 30°C . 24°C zastosowano w technologii sera gouda. Sery po 4 i 6 tygodniach dojrzewania poddano ocenie sensorycznej. Zastosowanie podłoży wzrostowych umożliwiło – zwłaszcza przy inkubacji w temp. 24°C – otrzymanie zakwasów o większej liczebności bakterii fermentacji mlekowej oraz większym odsetku szczepów fermentujących cytryniany, a w konsekwencji większej aktywności aromato- i gazotwórczej.
The technological usefulness of mesophilic lactic streptococci starters propagated in skimmed milk and in two different growth media at 24 and 30°C was evaluated. The effect of medium type and incubation temperatures on the number of lactic acid bacteria were studied including the percentage rate of the citrate-fermenting bacteria. The evaluation of the starters’ technological usefulness comprised two phases. There were compared contents of diacetyl and of CO2 in milk that was acidified to pH 5.2 using experimental starters. Starters that propagated at 24°C were used to produce Gouda cheese. After a 4 and 6 week ripening period, sensory properties of the cheese were evaluated. Owing to the growth media used, it was possible, especially when the incubation took place at 24°C , to obtain starters with higher numbers of lactic acid bacteria, and a higher percentage of citrate-fermenting bacteria; consequently, the aroma- and gas-forming activity of the starters was higher, too. Cheeses produced with starters, which propagated on the experimental media, had a more advantageous flavour and smell (a clearly nutty smell) and a significantly better eye structure than cheeses produced with a starter propagated on skimmed milk.
