    The authors of the article evaluate social-communicative problems of the minority group of Roma Gypsies in Poland. The existing low linguistic competence is additionally constrained by the accompanying insufficient communicative competence. The authors emphasize that teaching of a foreign language, in this particular case of the dominant language in the country, is effective only when it is simultaneously enhanced by a corresponding interaction between the two cultures in question. The authors indicate the barriers to cultural integration that hamper the community’s capacity and capability of establishing the relationships between these communities that would be based on partnership and mutual respect: these barriers include the orality and the tabooisation of Romany culture as well as its unfamiliarity to the Poles. This, in turn, generates patterns for statements and utterances in which ceremonial patterns are of secondary importance. It is rather the pragmatic factor that governs a particular linguistic behaviour: the Romany people simply want to understand the message and want to be understood. The article stresses that the present unfortunate social communication can be changed in the future by the implementation of appropriate activities within educational strategies directed towards the target group.

    With the intent of adding to the literature leading toward a more complete theory of second language vocabulary acquisition, this study elicited accuracy data from 110 ESL learners ranging from novice high to advanced low on 64 words randomly selected in the 2K–3K range of Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) (32 verbs, 24 nouns, 8 adjectives) covering eight aspects of word knowledge. These included spelling based on hearing the spoken form, selecting collocations based on the written form, pronunciation based on the written form, selecting inflections based on the written context, selecting the definition based on hearing the spoken form, selecting the written definition based on the written form, selecting appropriate derivations based on the written form, and selecting the written form based on the written definition. ANOVA results show accuracy levels varied across word knowledge aspects and that implicational scaling was possible with some but not all aspects of word knowledge examined simultaneously. In aggregation with other current and future studies, this has important implication for developing L2 vocabulary acquisition theory.

    Obszar postradziecki zamieszkują wspólnoty posługujące się wielką liczbą języków i dialektów. Mozaika językowa regionu kształtowała się przez tysiąclecia. Częstokroć stanowiła czynnik poważnie oddziałujący na rozwój sytuacji geopolitycznej w tejże części globu. Obszar postradziecki pozostaje przestrzenią, w której kwestie językowe nadal jawią się jako wyzwanie. W sporym stopniu tradycyjne problemy uległy komplikacji w okresie regionalnej ekspansji ruszczyzny w wiekach XIX oraz XX. Aktualnie państwa regionu starają się prowadzić bardziej lub mniej autonomiczne polityki językowe, niekiedy obliczone na łagodzenie, niekiedy na zaostrzanie miejscowych konfliktów socjopolitycznych. Polityki te nierzadko okazują się instrumentem, przy pomocy którego gracze regionalni usiłują niwelować tudzież zwiększać rozdźwięki w stosunkach wzajemnych. Co więcej, rozwiązania polityczne w kwestiach językowych często służą jako argumenty w rywalizacji aksjologicznej pomiędzy wspólnotami zamieszkującymi przestrzeń byłego ZSRR. Celem tekstu jest analiza wybranych aspektów wspomnianych polityk. Stanowi on także próbę ogólnej charakterystyki ich właściwości retorycznych oraz potencjału argumentacyjnego.
    The post-Soviet region is inhabited by communities using a high number of languages and dialects. This linguistic mosaic has been formed for millennia. Very often it turned out to be a factor seriously influencing the development of the geopolitical situation in this part of the globe. The post-Soviet region remains a space where language issues are still challenging and very sensitive. In large measure, traditional problems became more complicated during the period of the regional expansion of the Russian language in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Nowadays, states in the region try to create more or less autonomous language policies, sometimes calculated on relieving and sometimes on fueling socio-political conflicts. Language policies often turn out to be the instrument by which players in the region are trying to diminish or increase the gap in mutual relations. Additionally, political solutions applied to language issues often serve as a kind of argument in the axiological rivalry between communities living in the area of the former USSR. The paper aims to analyze some selected aspects of these policies. It also tries to characterize in general their rhetorical qualities and argumentative potential.

    I have discussed cognitive aspects of translation and have attempted to pay particularattention to the cognitive conditions guaranteeing the correct process of translation. Translating from one language into another is, in my opinion, possible thanks to reference to the conceptual ground and information processing outside language. The division of a single mental lexicon common to two languages into two separate mental lexicons influences the quality of translation. The condition of a successful translation is the correct identification of the conceptual structure and this, in turn, is possible only after the division of the mental lexicons so that the lexical units have direct access to concepts beyond language and are able to activate them.

    While it is a well-known fact that speakers of article-less mother tongues, such as Polish, experience problems with articles in English, this study seeks to investigate the problem from a different perspective. Namely, it poses the question of whether the correct use of the article system of the L2 is indeed a purely grammatical task (as it is universally perceived), or whether the correct use of articles is to some extent aided by the mechanisms that underlie the formulaic character of language. The study was conducted with 90 Polish upper-intermediate and advanced users of L2 English, who completed a test on article use, which made it possible to compare patterns of article use between contexts of different collocational strength (defined in terms of the frequency of occurrence in a corpus). The statistically higher success rates for article use in high-frequency collocations (with the grammatical “rule” being the same) indicate that phraseological aspects of language use may indeed play a role in what is usually perceived as the correct application of grammatical rules.

    In the article, I discuss the legal aspects of language: using linguistic analyses for the benefit of the courts. I discuss linguists’ court communication situation and the expectations towards them. The starting point is one exemplary court case in which an expert linguist was appointed to issue an opinion on the evidence. The conclusions fall into two categories: linguistics and forensic science. Linguistic conclusions, developed in accordance with traditional methods of lexicographic analysis and lexicological and semantic analysis, are not necessarily (because they would not have to be) innovative for linguists. It was more important to show the situation of a linguist in court, the structure of judicial opinion and the procedures for building the linguistic response to a process inquiry as seen from the forensic perspective.

    W artykule podjęto analizę pojęcia tzw. kodu kulturowego, rozumianego jako splot kulturowych i społecznie uwarunkowanych elementów, przez pryzmat których nadajemy (najczęściej nieświadomie) rzeczom i zjawiskom określone znaczenia. Użytkownik języka ojczystego nabywa tenże kod w procesie wychowania i socjalizacji w społeczeństwie, a także naturalnej akwizycji języka pierwszego. Proces opanowania języka obcego podlega jednak dalece większym ograniczeniom, stąd też centralnym problemem tekstu jest zagadnienie ‘wyuczalności’ kodu kulturowego w języku obcym. Mimo, że elementy obcojęzycznego kodu kulturowego wpływają negatywnie na procesy rozumienia i tworzenia znaczeń w języku obcym, mogą zarazem pozytywnie kształtować świadomość kultury ojczystej oraz relacje bikulturowe pomiędzy nią a kulturą obcą.
    The article analyses the notion of the so-called cultural code, understood as a complex interweaving of culturally and socially conditioned elements, through the prism of which we give (most often unconsciously) things and phenomena their particular meanings. The native language user acquires this code in the process of upbringing and socialisation in the society and during acquisition of the first language. However, the process of mastering a foreign language is subject to far greater constraints. Hence, the main problem addressed in the text is the issue of ‘learnability’ of the cultural code, which is specific for each language. Although the foreign-language specific elements have a negative impact on the processes of understanding and expressing the intended meanings in the foreign language, they can at the same time positively shape the awareness of native culture as well as the bi-cultural relations between the native and the foreign culture.

    By declaring a language as their native language or mother tongue, people carry out an act of identification with this language, and via this language with people and ideas to whom they assign the same language. This comes to the fore especially when external conflicts are transferred to the linguistic constellation. This is the case in Ukraine, where three languages / codes are at the disposal: the state’s official language Ukrainian, but also Russian, and “suržyk”, a widespread form of speech containing both Ukrainian and Russian elements. Based on a survey from 2014 in the central regions of Ukraine, this article examines which of these languages / codes are chosen as a native language and how this choice is connected with more objective aspects of language use. By means of generative additive mixed-effects modeling, it will be shown how this choice varies both socially and geographically.
