Opis:
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present an answer to the research question of what could be the real impact of an artificial manager on the work of a team consisting of humans. Design/methodology/approach: In presenting the arguments for one way of proceeding AI-based management, a review of the recent literature in the field of artificial management and artificial leadership was used. The artificial manager used in the research was the result of a non-participating, long-term observation of a group of students working on an specific task, whose activity was recorded by online management tools called TransistorsHead.com. Findings: The real impact of the artificial manager on the human team members was very weak. Although team members were taking similar managerial actions as they were told by the system of TransistorsHead.com, they mixed the order and decreased or increased a period of the managerial actions. Research limitations/implications: Human members did not feel any emotional pressure on their behaviour from the artificial manager and they do not treat the system too seriously. What is interesting, the most obedient person was the appointed assistant of the artificial manager. The rest two members did not obey the rules. Practical implications: If we manage to create an artificial manager, it will be much harder to make it effective in working with human team members. The research on team management automation will impact upon the business by giving a chance of implementing artificial management. Social implications: even if we manage to create an artificial manager, it will be much harder to make it effective in working with human team members. Originality/value: There is a new research problem of replacing a human manager with an artificial manager which has to be solved in management sciences and managerial practice in the future. This paper contains findings which are the next step in solving a new research problem of replacing a human manager with an artificial manager.

Opis:
Purpose: The paper addresses the research problem of the new organizational reality which will include hybrid virtual teams, where both humans and artificial agents will be members and management tasks or leadership roles will be assumed by artificial intelligence. The objectives of the paper are to initially answer 4 research questions: (1) what are the characteristics of virtual teams in the era of intelligent technology, (2) what is the role of technology in changing the human-machine relationship, (3) to what extent can artificial intelligence replace humans in a virtual team, (4) how can team members be replaced by artificial intelligence in a virtual team. Design/methodology/approach: The research method is a literature review and our own empirical research concerning the new organizational reality with hybrid virtual teams consisting of humans as well as artificial agents. The research data was the results of a long-term observation of a virtual team which was conducted in June 2021 in a group of students who worked 36 hours using online management tools in TransistorsHead.com and MS Teams. Findings: The research has shown that virtual teams require different ways of communication and that consequences of working in such a team change the types of tasks, time spent working together as a group and social aspects of cooperation between team members. This experiment has shown that the decision-making process based on artificial entities can fulfill the requirements of virtual teams and that such entities can be considered as teammates or teams (Team As A Software – TAAS). It is also possible also to imitate a human-like manager (Manager As A Software – MAAS) or its higher evolutionary copy, namely a “sophisticated superhuman machine”. Research limitations/implications: The research results presented here are an example of research conducted from 2012 on, by means of online managerial tools, concerning the work of virtual teams and the opportunity to replace a human manager with a robot one. The answers to the research questions can only be applied to the studied group of students and cannot be generalized for all teams. Future research will be conducted with a wider group of respondents. Originality/value: The originality of the presented research results lies in the fact that the data collected during the research represents the real activities undertaken by the manager and his/her team members during the 36-hour work on the task concerned rather than being mere declarations of these activities by the respondents.
Dane badawcze zostały zgromadzone w wyniku długookresowej obserwacji zespołu wirtualnego, która została przeprowadzona w czerwcu 2021 roku wśród grupy studentów pracujących 36 godzin z wykorzystaniem narzędzi zarządzania online w TransistorsHead.com i MS Teams.

Opis:
Aim/purpose – This research presents a conceptual stakeholder accountability model for mapping the project actors to the conduct for which they should be held accountable in artificial intelligence (AI) projects. AI projects differ from other projects in important ways, including in their capacity to inflict harm and impact human and civil rights on a global scale. The in-project decisions are high stakes, and it is critical who decides the system’s features. Even well-designed AI systems can be deployed in ways that harm individuals, local communities, and society. Design/methodology/approach – The present study uses a systematic literature review, accountability theory, and AI success factors to elaborate on the relationships between AI project actors and stakeholders. The literature review follows the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) statement process. Bovens’ accountability model and AI success factors are employed as a basis for the coding framework in the thematic analysis. The study uses a web-based survey to collect data from respondents in the United States and Germany employing statistical analysis to assess public opinion on AI fairness, sustainability, and accountability. Findings – The AI stakeholder accountability model specifies the complex relationships between 16 actors and 22 stakeholder forums using 78 AI success factors to define the conduct and the obligations and consequences that characterize those relationships. The survey analysis suggests that more than 80% of the public thinks AI development should be fair and sustainable, and it sees the government and development organizations as most accountable in this regard. There are some differences between the United States and Germany regarding fairness, sustainability, and accountability. Research implications/limitations – The results should benefit project managers and project sponsors in stakeholder identification and resource assignment. The definitions offer policy advisors insights for updating AI governance practices. The model presented here is conceptual and has not been validated using real-world projects. Originality/value/contribution – The study adds context-specific information on AI to the project management literature. It defines project actors as moral agents and provides a model for mapping the accountability of project actors to stakeholder expectations and system impacts.

Management innovations as difficult to duplicate can be a source of a relatively sustainable competitive advantage, increased efficiency, improved productivity, and financial results of enterprises. Although these innovations are gaining popularity and recognition, the methods and processes of their development still remain insufficiently studied and recognized. The poor development of management theory in terms of its practical usability and real impact on everyday managerial decisions and actions in the face of the intensifying transformation in the social and technological dimension is an important argument for seeking a new approach to management innovation. The research aims to identify a relatively new approach to innovation based on design methodology and practice, and to formulate the fundamental premises for using this approach to management innovation research. The method used to solve the scientific problem was deduction referred to an in-depth and critical study of the literature in the field of management innovation, contemporary design-based approaches, and the epistemology and methodology of management as the artificial science. The main result of the research is to formulate the fundamental premises of using the assumptions of the design-based approach to management innovation, and the explanation of their implications for management sciences.

Purpose – The purpose of this article is to discuss and show that management is a science, not just an art. Decision-making in the enterprise requires talent and special skills supported by the right qualifications. According to Tatarkiewicz, management can be considered as an art, which can be interpreted as follows: “(...) man’s conscious creation is a work of art always when it recreates reality, shapes forms, or expresses experience, yet it is able either to delight, or touch, or shock” (Tatarkiewicz, 1972). On the other hand, the company management is understood as a continuous process of making decisions based on reliable knowledge, observations and experiences – it is, therefore, a science, and modern managers are not just passive consumers of research knowledge, but also its creators. Contemporary theories focus attention on constructing appropriate models, which support the decisions of managers allowing them to somehow “spy” and observe the effects of their decisions. The aim of the paper is to show that in the modern economy, design models to support the management of the enterprise is the science that uses the achievements of other sciences, creative adaptation of these achievements in modeling phenomena occurring in the world economy. The aim of this article is to show that management sciences are increasingly exploiting modern knowledge to build models for developing practical concepts of management systems.Design/Methodology/Approach – The authors present the review of mathematical models, computer models (used in situations where the analytical models cannot find the best solution), and in particular artificial intelligence algorithms and selected models of dynamic system for managing the organization and some examples of applications.Findings – The results obtained show that in the management sciences, many models are used to support managerial decisions. Of course, the achievements of other sciences are very often used, management is of an application, but also of scientific nature, because, in order to skillfully use knowledge from other fields, decision-making models should be developed to solve problems in management and allow to use the achievements of these other areas.Research limitations/implications – The limitations of this paper result from the fact that only selected models are presented in the article. The authors hope that these selected models will be the argument that management science is becoming more and more science and not an art only.Originality/Value – This paper presents the review of modern methods used in management sciences to show that modern management is more a science than an art.

Nowadays, the need for digitisation and digitalisation of enterprises, as well as the use of solutions based on Artificial Intelligence (AI), are coming to the fore. The use of intelligent systems in organisations is not a strictly technical issue, and is also important in the management of modern enterprises. The aim of this article is to provide a theoretical analysis of the phenomenon of Artificial Intelligence in management sciences by means of a systematic review of the literature using Scopus database records. Bibliographic analysis of Artificial Intelligence in management sciences in this article points to this topic as something relatively new in the case of management sciences, although rapidly developing. As part of the bibliographic analysis we propose an agenda regarding the issue of AI in management sciences, consisting of thematic clusters related to technologies based on and complementary to AI, the goals of using AI in organisations, human-AI relations and issues related to ethics and sustainable development.

Executive managerial decisions this industry have a substantial impact on technology, data management and analytics, data security, risk management, regulatory compliance, validation, and human resource practices, among other things. Artificial Intelligence, sensors, enterprise-level solution platforms, and Machine Learning will all be used extensively in the fourth industrial revolution. In industry 4.0, the volume of external and internal Internet of Things (IoT) data is expected to expand, resulting in a drastic shift in information. The IR4.0 will result in an abundance of data flowing to quality experts in real-time, and this data will come from various sources at the same time, necessitating intelligent utilization to enable quick and effective decision-making. Managers and quality control employees must make the necessary decisions to provide a smooth transition to digital technology, which will increase the efficiency and quality of manufactured goods and services. Companies will be required to employ effective risk management strategies as part of the fourth industrial revolution in order to improve product quality and operational efficiency by allowing machine learning and Artificial Intelligence to give the finest services. As a result, the risk management team must develop plans to ensure that these tactics are implemented properly. Furthermore, quality managers must ensure that Quality 4.0, which will coincide with the fourth industrial revolution, is implemented effectively. Previous research into how Industry 4.0 affects managerial decisions has been lacking and unsatisfactory. As a result, the article tries to provide a complete assessment of the fourth industrial revolution’s management implications.

Railways deliver a safe and sustainable form of transport and are typically pointed as one the safest form of transportation. Nevertheless, train accidents still happen, and when they happen, the consequences concern serious fatalities and injuries. Since every case is unique, the most frequent causes of train accidents are mechanical derailments, failures, as well as human errors and ignorance. In order to mitigate the risks posed by both physical and human related factors, various technological advancements have been designed and implemented. Among many existing Train Control and Monitoring Systems (TCMS), one can observe that recently developed artificial intelligence (AI) methods are also considered to be integrated part of the modern TCMS solutions. Following recent AI improvements and trends, in this paper we aim to present and discuss our newly developed TCMS system. In particular, both the system architecture and features are described along with the expected benefits of its implementation.

In marine vessel operations, fuel costs are major operating costs which affect the overall profitability of the maritime transport industry. The effective enhancement of using ship fuel will increase ship operation efficiency. Since ship fuel consumption depends on different factors, such as weather, cruising condition, cargo load, and engine condition, it is difficult to assess the fuel consumption pattern for various types of ships. Most traditional statistical methods do not consider these factors when predicting marine vessel fuel consumption. With technological development, different statistical models have been developed for estimating fuel consumption patterns based on ship data. Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) are some of the most effective artificial methods for modelling and validating marine vessel fuel consumption. The application of ANN in maritime transport improves the accuracy of the regression models developed for analysing interactive relationships between various factors. The present review sheds light on consolidating the works carried out in predicting ship fuel consumption using ANN, with an emphasis on topics such as ANN structure, application and prediction algorithms. Future research directions are also proposed and the present review can be a benchmark for mathematical modelling of ship fuel consumption using ANN.

Opis:
Introduction/background: Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly important in today’s business environment, but operation of AI devices may pose a risk to purchasers of products incorporating the AI or recipients of services using the AI. This risk must be taken into account by the entrepreneur in his or her business activity. For this to happen, the entrepreneur must know the legal regime under which he or she will be held liable in the event of damage caused by the AI he or she uses. Aim of the paper: The article is devoted to a critical analysis of the draft Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on liability for the operation of artificial intelligence systems contained in the resolution of the European Parliament of 20 October 2020 with recommendations to the Commission on the liability regime for artificial intelligence (2020/2014 (INL)). Materials and methods: The considerations in this article are based on the literature on the subject and on the European Parliament proposed a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on liability for the operation of artificial intelligence systems. These materials have been subjected to critical analysis. Results and conclusions: The conducted analysis leads the author to the conclusion that the proposed regulation introducing different liability regimes corresponds to the specificity of AI, and compulsory insurance for high-risk AI system operators is an important step towards securing the interests of the aggrieved party, however, limiting the operator's liability at the proposed level does not sufficiently guarantee protection of the interests of the victims. The author is also critical of the fact that the regulation links the compensation for personal injury to the economic consequences of the infringement of personal rights, does not regulate the issue of the causal link between the operation of AI systems and the damage and the difficulties of proof faced by victims of the operation of AI systems. Consequently, the author questions the advisability of regulating civil liability for the actions of artificial intelligence systems at EU level in the form of a regulation, when it would be sufficient to allow individual Member States to regulate this matter while harmonizing national regulations by means of a directive.

Opis:
With the growing number of city vehicles, traffic management is becoming a persistent challenge. Traffic bottlenecks cause significant disturbances in our everyday lives and raise stress levels, negatively impacting the environment by increasing carbon emissions. Due to the population increase, megacities are experiencing severe challenges and significant delays in their day-to-day activities related to transportation. An intelligent traffic management system is required to assess traffic density regularly and take appropriate action. Even though separate lanes are available for various vehicle types, wait times for commuters at traffic signal points are not reduced. The proposed methodology employs artificial intelligence to collect live images from signals to address this issue in the current system. This approach calculates traffic density, utilizing the image processing technique YOLOv4 for effective traffic congestion management. The YOLOv4 algorithm produces better accuracy in the detection of multiple vehicles. Intelligent monitoring technology uses a signal-switching algorithm at signal intersections to coordinate time distribution and alleviate traffic congestion, resulting in shorter vehicle waiting times.

Opis:
Celem projektu realizowanego w Katedrze Automatyki jest stworzenie wydajnego narzędzia wspomagającego proces nadzoru przestrzeni i obiektów publicznych, w oparciu o automatyczną analizę obrazów cyfrowych.
The aim of the project realized in the Department of Automatics is to create an efficient tool to support the process of surveillance of public spaces and buildings based on automated image analysis. Assuming a wide scope of applications of developed tools, the design of the program to automatically support surveillance tasks is not a trivial problem, due to unforeseen circumstances and non-predicted situation. Developing an effective surveillance system requires addressing a number of issues, that are conceptually complex and require research and implementation of advanced algorithms. The goal of an intelligent monitoring system is to identify potentially suspicious circumstances according to assumed safety criteria. In order to overcome arising here difficulties there are created algorithms whose operation is based not only on processing and analyzing images, but also on imitating a human perception and understanding of the analyzed images.

The paper presents a new approach to the spare parts forecasting issue - a method which combines regression modeling, information criteria and artificial neural networks ANN. The research presented in this article compares efficiency of classical methods with the artificial intelligence tool in the scope of spare parts forecasting. Artificial Neural Networks have been advocated as an alternative to traditional statistical forecasting methods. Classical methods, such as exponential smoothing or mean average, have been used for several decades in forecasting demand. However, many of these techniques may perform poorly when demand for an item is lumpy or intermittent. In the paper three concepts of using ANN in spare parts forecasting - micro, macro and hybrid - were described. The article presents also the variable selection issue, which is of a great importance in any model building.

Artificial neural networks are one of the modern methods of the production optimisation. An attempt to apply neural networks for controlling the quality of bentonite moulding sands is presented in this paper. This is the assessment method of sands suitability by means of detecting correlations between their individual parameters. The presented investigations were aimed at the selection of the neural network able to predict the active bentonite content in the moulding sand on the basis of this sand properties such as: permeability, compactibility and the compressive strength. Then, the data of selected parameters of new moulding sand were set to selected artificial neural network models. This was made to test the universality of the model in relation to other moulding sands. An application of the Statistica program allowed to select automatically the type of network proper for the representation of dependencies occurring in between the proposed moulding sand parameters. The most advantageous conditions were obtained for the uni-directional multi-layer perception (MLP) network. Knowledge of the neural network sensitivity to individual moulding sand parameters, allowed to eliminate not essential ones.
