Opis:
The significant growth in the number of Ukrainian s tudents at Polish institutions of higher education has significantly changed the face of academic education in this country. The existing model of higher education mostly based , especially in smaller centres, on studies of a single nation has been evolving over a t least several years in the direction of a bi- or multicultural model. Ukrainians currently constitute the largest group of minority students in Polish institutions of higher education , which affects social attitudes perceptible in the academic environment, arouses interest in th e Other or evokes negative cultural ste- reotypes and prejudice. In the context of these cha nges, key questions arise about the mo- bility of Ukrainian students to Poland, which can b e addressed in the following research questions: What are the motives of Ukrainian studen ts coming to Poland? Will Ukrainian graduates remain in Poland and be assimilated, or w ill the higher professional qualifica- tions earned help many Ukrainians with Polish degre es to build a new social, economic and cultural order? What is the structure of education for a Ukrainian student – one based on the domi- nance of one cultural canon or one that shows cultu ral diversity? Included these visible changes at Polish universiti es were also programmes in “Art Ed- ucation in the Musical Arts”, including those condu cted in the Institute of Music at the Pomeranian Academy in Słupsk. Since 2014, this inst itution and institute have offered “semester exchange” and “double degree” programmes for students from Ukrainian insti- tutions, and many Ukrainians have chosen Słupsk as the place for the full programme of their music and pedagogical studies. The theoretical section of the article is divided i nto three parts: 1. Academic mobility - in which select literature o n the situation of students pursuing their education abroad is discussed. At the foregro und of these discussions are the problems of students’ adaptation to a new, cultural ly foreign environment. Also con- sidered are the perceived difficulties in studying in the chosen field, as well as the question of the declared strength of the desire of Ukrainian students to emigrate to a new country, understood in the perspective of their car eer development in the profession. 2. Students from Ukraine pursuing studies in music and pedagogy form a certain image of their future professional employment, namely as a music teacher at school. There- fore, the focus of this article is the analysis of different models of this profession and their integration with the interests and musical ac tivities they engage in. Jarosław Chaci ń ski 256 3. Another area of the literature analysis, underta ken in order to learn about the changes in the consciousness of Ukrainian students, is the subject of shaping their individual cultural image, based on the dominance of their nat ive cultural canon, which then un- dergoes an inevitable process of acculturation. In this aspect, it is important to esti- mate how much they have learned and their ability t o recognize another cultural tra- dition, as well as to acquire the competence to dea l with the history of Polish culture and its most outstanding works in the musical, visu al, architectural and literary arts. The research variables identified in the theoretica l part of the article were then the main inspiration for the survey research, included in th e second part of the article, in which Ukrainian students, answering the questions in the survey, declared their attitudes toward selected phenomena in which they participate, made a self-assessment of their assimilation of the Polish cultural canon in the context of the previous canon of their native Ukrainian culture, declared their professional preferences, o riented towards performing the future work of a music teacher according to a defined model.

If there is an aesthetic that characterizes the novel Tels des astres éteints writing by Leonora Miano, it is the combination of literary art and the art of music. This artistic hybridity that starts from paratexts transforms the novel into iso-epistemic space and into an archive of memory discography. For this poetic hybrid, the author expands the fields of observation and intensifies cognitive quest (Krysinski, 2004). It is also a scriptural technical mobilized to translate and defend the identity hybridity.

The article focuses on identifying differences in the locus of control and styles of coping with stress among young students who are artistically gifted within the fields of music and visual arts. The research group includes Polish students (n = 354) of both music and visual art schools who develop their artistic talents in schools placing particular emphasis on professional training of their artistic abilities and competences within the field of music or visual arts respectively. We make an assumption that different types of difficult situations experienced by youth educated at music and visual art schools may generate differences in dominating personal traits as well as in their sphere of emotions. The results of cross-sectional research in 2013 confirm the assumption regarding differences among music and visual art school students both with regard to the source of the locus of control, understood as the personality variable, and dominating styles of coping with stress. Moreover, a positive correlation between the tendency towards internal locus of control and a task-oriented style of coping with stress in difficult situations has been observed in music school students.

Teaching music and visual arts to children can be seen as the key to their development. In his article, Jakub Adamczewski discusses the current shape of the organization of the teaching and planning processes of these two subjects in the context of the Polish primary school. Adamczewski’s main aim is to present new ideas and good practices, as based on his teaching experience, in the hope that they can be used to improve art education. This kind of knowledge, deriving from both a review of the literature on this subject and pedagogical experience, may be of value for teachers and academics involved in the education of art teachers at the primary-school level.

This paper primarily aims to present, both theoretically and empirically, the art of children at the early education stage. In the first part of the paper I present theoretical foundations and exemplary studies of the creativity of children aged 4–9. In the empirical part I present results of the study of plastic and literary art of third-graders (age 9–10), undertaken under infl uence of music. In the study the method of observation and analysis of products were applied. The results show that children’s creativity bears features of an intellectual activity and it is saturated with children’s experiences, which is demonstrated by the adequate titles of their literary and plastic art works as well as by the descriptions of the music flow.

In this paper it is being argued that music might be regarded as a adaptive human behavior in the light of the evolutionary process. The author recalls here the NAPS theory of music according to which music does not prolong the existence of humanity but it might use one or many channels related to feeling pleasure which had evolved to strengthen adaptive behavior. The article recalls examples of theoreis of musical evolution connec ted to such issues as sexual choices, social integrity, development of perception, development of movement abilities, group effort, reduction of conf lict of interests, safe time consumption and communication between generations. All this evidence is being here regarded through archeological, anthropological and etological context. The conclusion of this paper is based on two assumptions. The first one is the notion that our mood is regulated through conversation and being with a friendly human. The other says that music takes and important place in this mood regulation.

Opis:
The drawings, portraits and effigies of Chopin that were produced during his lifetime later became the basis for artists’ fantasies on the subject of his work. Just after the composer’s death, Teofil Kwiatkowski began to paint Bal w Hotel Lambert w Paryżu [Ball at the Hotel Lambert in Paris], symbolising the unfulfilled hopes of the Polish Great Emigration that Chopin would join the mission to raise the spirit of the nation. Henryk Siemiradzki recalled the young musician’s visit to the Radziwiłł Palace in Poznań. The composer’s likeness appeared in symbolic representations of a psychological, ethnological and historical character. Traditional roots are referred to in the paintings of Feliks Wygrzywalski, Mazurek - grający Chopin [Mazurka - Chopin at the piano], with a couple of dancers in folk costume, and Stanisław Zawadzki, depicting the composer with a roll of paper in his hand against the background of a forest, into the wall of which silhouettes of country children are merged, personifying folk music. Pictorial tales about music were also popularised by postcards. On one anonymous postcard, a ghost hovers over the playing musician, and the title Marsz żałobny Szopena [Chopin’s funeral march] suggests the connection with real apparitions that the composer occasional had when performing that work. In the visualisation of music, artists were often assisted by poets, who suggested associations and symbols. Correlations of content and style can be discerned, for example, between Władysław Podkowinski’s painting Marsz żałobny Szopena and Kornel Ujejski’s earlier poem Marsz pogrzebowy [Funeral march]. The testimony of people who visited the Cracow apartment of Stanisław Przybyszewski suggests crucial links between Wojciech Weiss’s lost painting Chopin that hung there and the host’s aesthetic writings and legendary sessions of nocturnal improvisations. Against the background of that iconography, Jerzy Duda-Gracz’s idea of painting all Chopin’s works, subsequently brought together in the cycle Chopinowi Duda-Gracz [From Duda-Gracz for Chopin], is quite exceptional, in terms of its genesis, the extent of Chopin’s oeuvre and also the way in which music is transformed into painting. The artist attempted to capture the atmosphere of Polish landscapes visited by the composer, linking them to particular works. The Chopin cycle possesses a clear stylistic and symbolic identity, although it is impossible to establish a universal pattern for translating music into visual art. Although Zbigniew Rybczyński employed a camera and advanced cinematographic techniques, his depiction of Chopin’s Marche funebre from the Sonata in B flat minor (in his suite of films The Orchestra) refers to Romantic-symbolic interpretations and to previous pictorial visualisations. The director dresses his actors in historical costumes and places them in front of the Paris Opera. To the rhythm of Chopin’s music, they play out - using theatrical expression typical of silent film, pantomime, ballet and tableaux vivants - a story of maturing and ageing.

Opis:
On the basis of his own experiences of music, starting with the early childhood, throughout the university studies, until holding various managerial positions at music institutions, the author reaches the final conclusion that the very idea of musical school was born in the Church. The Church has always taught music and singing. Liturgical music has invariably been viewed as “primordial” (“di prim’ordine”), requiring professional skills from its performers. It has not only been a form of artistic expression or the aim in itself, but an instrument of communicating the Gospel and the words directed by the Church to God since the dawn of her history. The “professionalism” of the music within the Church, however, calls for the places of formation and education, so as to endure in time and to lay the foundation for setting guidelines to follow. The above postulate of teaching music in the Church originates from the very mission of the latter which, through her evangelization, “sings out” her faith. The author proposes his own, based on the experiences of many musicians as well, “definition” of the Church music: “Performing music in Church is the experience of faith, enlightened with aesthetic joy which moves the deepest recesses of the soul”. The Church music, understood in this way, evokes in us responsibility for preserving and passing down to next generations the idea of balance between the conception of art as the celestial gift of God (virtus cujusdam caelestis influxus) and the fruit of human intelligence (vehementia assidue exercitationis). Art and music – according to the author – are the fruits (ingenium et opus) of intelligence, efforts and commitment, and they compound with one another into a complete and final work of art (opus cansummatum et effectum).
Kościół zawsze nauczał muzyki i śpiewu. „Profesjonalizm” muzyki w Kościele potrzebuje jednak miejsc formacji i nauczania, aby móc przetrwać w czasie i mieć solidne podstawy do wytyczania kierunku dla przyszłości.

Over the past few years, media use among children and teens has become more prevalent than ever. With the launch of the iPod, the explosion in instant messaging, the birth of mobile video and YouTube, and the advent of social networking sites, young people are rarely out of contact, or out of reach of the media. Although culture and society have the potential to generate both positive and negative effects, everything depends on parents and parental supervision. In this paper, I want to present benefits and drawbacks which culture carries, because humans are cultural beings. We learn to communicate and understand our world through the context of our languages, traditions, behaviours, beliefs and values. Our cultural experiences and values shape the way we see ourselves and what we think is important.

Opis:
Modern music theory, ignoring the problems connected with the subject’s auditive experience but referring to the objective laws of nature, was criticised by Carl Dahlhaus, although he accepted - to a certain extent - the hypothesis of historical determinism. Dahlhaus links this turning point in the history of reflection on music with the transition from the ‘ontological contemplation’ of the Tonsystem to the ‘aesthetic contemplation’ of the Tonkunstwerk, the fundamental characteristic of which is the idea of ‘wholeness’ (die Idee der Ganzheit). The new conception of the discourse on the theory and history of modern music proposed by Karol Berger in his book A Theory of Art (2000) bears testimony to crucial changes in the contemporary humanities linked to the so-called ‘cognitive revolution’. According to Berger, the fundamental characteristic distinguishing modern art from premodern art is its autonomy. Berger distances himself from the modern tradition of theoretic- aesthetic discourse treating the work of art, including the work of music, as an axiologically neutral entity independent of ‘human nature’, that is, of the functioning of our memory, imagination and cognitive mechanisms, and also not having a specific social function. At the centre of Berger’s theoretical interests is aesthetics, as broadly understood, coupled with ethics and history, poetics and hermeneutics. He is not interested - like Dahlhaus - in considering ‘what art is’ or ‘what music is’ , but poses the question: ‘What should the function of art be, if art is to have a value for us ?’

The aim of this paper is to propose an interpretation of aesthetic emotions in which they are treated as various affective reactions to a work of art. I present arguments that there are three different types of such aesthetic emotional responses to art, i.e., embodied emotions, epistemic emotions and contextual-associative emotions. I then argue that aesthetic emotions understood in this way are dynamic wholes that need to be explained by capturing and describing their internal temporal dynamics as well as by analyzing the relationships with the other components of aesthetic experience.

Opis:
In the last few years a number of studies have explored the epistemological uses of the ethnographer’s gender in sociological research and the effects of gender on research results. These studies aim either to analyze how ethnographers can use their “gender” to open up observational possibilities, or to analyze observations made while maintaining as much control as possible over the conditions of their sociological interpretation. But relatively few papers discuss using ethnography to study gendered social relations. This article applies that approach to the observations made in our field study of the “world” of French jazz. We present here three of the main ways that the epistemological enrichment offered by ethnography may in turn enrich analysis of gender relations: access to “invisible” practices, analysis in terms of “the arrangement between the sexes", the possibility of generalization.

In the essay the author enquires into the references to popular song in the lyric poetry of the first decades of 20th century, treating the birth of the popular music as the beginning of perceiving a hit single as the integral piece meant to be shown to the public. The re-searcher asks about acceptability and, eventually, the consequences of the artistic flirt of highbrow literature with egalitarian word-music tradition. Moreover, the author shows various scenario of treating hit song impulses, beginning with total ignorance shown by Young Poland artists (Jan Kasprowicz, Bolesław Leśmian, Leopold Staff), through the separation of serious creativity from stage gainful employment, as in the case of Skamander members fearing being given the label of cabaret entertainers (Julian Tuwim, Antoni Słonimski or Marian Hemar), until the liquidation of barriers between serious and jocular muse domains, as in Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński’s lyric poetry. In this article, there are dozens of allusion, quotations, paraphrases, all invoking not only the most popular hit singles of the Interbellum, but also songs which were less known and therefore nowadays seem to be more difficult to identify. The list of the poets is extended by such personages as Bruno Jasieński, Maria Pawlikowska, and finally Czesław Miłosz.

Opis:
The topic of the article focuses on the critical analysis of the situation, in which the general current of music education can be found. The problem, accrued on constant transitions within the scope of defining and understanding art, results from blatant inconsistency in the declared values which create an axiological basis for music education and the dimension of reality inhabited by young people. The lack of contact between the abovementioned fields of aesthetic experience is visible in, i. a. ignoring complex social phenomena of pathological repressive nature, the insufficiency of educational methods when it comes to their content and forms of initiated contact with music. This might be the cause of dramatic tension between dysfunctional programme of music education which is resistant to changes of cultural reality, and the living conditions of the contemporary youth. The purpose of this article is to emphasize the problem of obsolete model of the general music education and its contact with the universe of values, the knowledge of socially constructed image of the world and creating one’s own, informal knowledge.

Opis:
In the liturgy of the Church, music, among other things, is a factor that supports a living relationship with God and unites believers. Pope-emeritus Benedict XVI and Pope Francis for the modern Church are guides and supreme guardians who point out the sense of maintaining the proper level of music in the Church. In his search for the right ways of church music, Benedict XVI does not deal thoroughly with musicological issues, but from the point of view of a theologian, he looks for points of contact between faith and art. For the pope, the musical expression of praise to God remains in harmony with the Christian dogma of the incarnation, which is realized in the Church and the sacraments. Music is one of the elements that create a space for the continuation of the events of the incarnation. Submitting to integration, it purifies the human being, liberates and inclines thoughts towards God. The current Pope Francis constantly recognizes music in the Church as a unifying element of the community and as a means of proclaiming the faith. He considers it necessary to constantly renew liturgical music and chant, especially in terms of quality, so that Church music is fully inculturated in the artistic and musical language of today. Getting to know the richness of music and traditions of different parts of the world helps to preserve the tradition of the Church in the modern world and to enrich it with what the modern times bring. Such an updating builds a living community which by listening or performing music unites diversity in one song of praise to God. The theological perspective on the meaning of sacred music and its qualities allows for the proper use of music as an integrating factor for both the individual believer and the whole community. The theological perspective on the importance of sacred music and its qualities helps to make the right use of music as an integrating factor for the individual believer and the community.

Opis:
In the paper, the author considers philosophical, aesthetic and pedagogical concepts explaining the specific position of aesthetics education in the education system and its importance in developing the ability to express authentic attitudes not only in the assessment of the arts but also in social processes of a democratic society. A historical account is part of this consideration, as it gives us an overview of cultural epochs in which emphasis on the aesthetics education of a young person became a national interest or, on the contrary, it stood partly on the edge of interest. Through the ideas of important thinkers of the 20th and 21st centuries (John Dewey, Paul G. Woodford, etc.), I try to emphasize the potential of musical, artistic, literary, dramatic education in the development of critical thinking as a fundamental attribute in the education of an authentic, free- and democratically- minded person. Active reception of art and the evaluation of artistic expressions occupy an important place in the awareness of one’s position in a society that faces many civilization and political challenges, such as poverty, migration, change of cultural mechanisms, and reception habits. All this requires reflection at the level of the philosophy of education in co-operation with its related disciplines, like pedagogy, aesthetics, cultural studies, and their applied educational disciplines. The definitive recognition of a dignified status for aesthetics education is one of the ways of coping with the civilization challenges of the 21st century and of flexible re-evaluation of the changing trends in the technologyoriented society structure and the one-sided general education

Opis:
In the current issue of the journal „Ars inter Culturas”, scholarly articles have been gathered and arranged into several thematic groups. Most of the issue is devoted to music, its analysis and to musical education, both conceptual and historical studies, as well as research into its effects. The articles in the first section are arranged chronologically, covering musical space from ancient Egypt to contemporary times. The second section includes historical research on music education, from the perspective of both Eastern European and Polish experiences. The third section maintains a multicultural profile, showing the interpenetration of various musical concepts between countries and their national adaptations.Traditionally, space is set aside in „Ars inter Culturas” for fields that round out the theore-tical area of other aspects of multiculturalism. This time, these were texts offering theological analysis as well as in teaching religious education for young people. The last part of this issue are references to other arts – ballet, design, as well as historical and contemporary interpreta-tion of literature, and sport.
