An Introduction to Considerations on Relationships between Arts, Science, and Technology SUMMARYThe text discusses relations between art and science with technology, which, the author believes, are one of the major consequences of problematization of the boundaries of art. This process, begun already in the nineteenth century, gained momentum owing to the development of avant-garde trends, having ultimately upset the identity of art. The institutional conception of art became a method of work in the Post-Identity art. Another response to this situation was the development of interaction between art and science, based on technological foundations, and the consequent emergence of the hybrid, transdisciplinary vision of art. The author presents and analyzes his proposed typology of artistic trends focused on cognitive activity, emerging from the dialogue with science. He focuses in particular on the third of the foregoing trends: art@science, which he regards as the most signifi cant for the recent manifestations of the analyzed phenomenon. At the same time he emphasized the specifi city and dissimilarity of contemporary relationships between art and science as compared with its earlier, historical manifestations.

Afrofuturism is, as Ytasha L. Womack wrote, “an intersection of imagination, technology, the future and liberation”. The aim of this work is to shed light on the depiction of science, art, culture and future in afrofuturism. The essay focuses on the use of scientific discourse in afrofuturistic narratives (novels, movies, graphic novels, musical works). The question is: Is afrofuturism also interpretive research and the critical theory of a culture?

This article offers an introduction to the complex area of media art laboratories which emerged along with the development of the art of new technologies. They came as a response to the need to search for new methods of cooperation that transgresses beyond disciplines, and to explore the potential of the previously impossible encounters of the world of art with the world of science. The art of new media has developed a completely different model of functioning in the world of art, enriching traditional exhibition practices which now include new educational and research formats. The primary aim of this text is to present a critical reflection on the role of contemporary media art laboratories. While analysing selected examples from the past, the author asks questions about the current challenges faced by art as a laboratory whose main task is to study reality and social relations, also in terms of contemporary culture and its technological aspects.

The aim of the text is to present the use of the analytical autoethnographic method in studying the “art&science” phenomenon. It is attempt to show that the role of the artist can combine with the role of the ethnographer. The objects of study are the multilevel relations emerging during the realization of artistic projects in biological laboratories. These relations concern both humans (the artist, the scientists) and non-humans (laboratory organisms, equipment). On the basis of actor-network theory, the author presents how the liminal status of ethnographic research is modified when it connects with art. The form of conducting the research is both an example of activity in the art and science field and a new methodological proposal for the study of science and technology.

Opis:
Contemporary cultures undergo the process of deep and diverse hybridization. Among numerous elements and factors of this process, relations between art and science play no- wadays very important role. I analyse this concept in the framework of the theory of the third culture, C.P. Snow put forward in his Rede lecture and publication in 1959. The third culture concept has been subsequently discussed and reinterpreted by John Brockman. In my analyse I return to Snow's idea of dialog as a basic form of the agency of merging arts and sciences. To explain how such processes have developed in the fields of contemporary artistic practices I present two case studies: the analyse of interactive Augmented Reality installations of Monika Fleischmann and Wolfgang Strauss in the context of ICT science; and the analyse of nanoart works of Victoria Vesna.

We used to identify the scientific reflection over the idea of the chance with mathematics or philosophy. In this paper we shall look at the problem from the perspective of visual arts. The history of philosophy and science shows that the idea of the chance was understood in many different ways. Also today we can differentiate at least three distinct paths of apprehending the topic: 1) the objective chance – when we presume that random events exist actually in nature, 2) the subjective chance – when what we presume to be random, results from the lack of sufficient knowledge about what could happen, and 3) the dynamic chance – when the randomness appears as an effect of complex interactions in determined systems. It seems that all the faces of the chance find their examples in arts, too. We notice them in the heritage of great masters, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Max Ernst, André Masson, Marcel Duchamp, Jackson Pollock, or Ryszard Winiarski. We also see that the chance plays a crucial role in contemporary arts.

Opis:
Next to its fundamental artistic and aesthetic properties and functions, perceived as entirely intrinsic and thus developed only through experience that it itself calls into existence, art also serves multiple social purposes. Among the latter, a set of interconnected cognitive, educational and adaptive roles seems to come to the foreground. This article discusses forms in which these functions manifest themselves along with their mutual relationships that may be observed in the field of progressive avant-garde art. It focuses on selected phenomena in the art of experimental cinema, analogue and digital synthesis, as well as contemporary artistic forms that use the techniques of augmented reality and biotechnology, producing a myriad of diversified hybrid constructs.

Opis:
W niniejszym artykule chcemy zwrócić uwagę na potencjał poznawczy drzemiący w obrazie oraz w posługującej się nim sztuce. Skupimy się tu na wizualizacji podstawowych obiektów matematycznych, jakimi są liczby niewymierne. Punktem wyjścia będzie dla nas łatwy i intuicyjny przypadek pierwiastka kwadratowego z dwóch, dostrzeżony w przekątnej kwadratu. Następnie przyjrzymy się złotej proporcji, ukrytej w pięciokącie foremnym. Przy wizualizacji niewymiernej liczby φ posłużymy się zapętloną, niekończąca się animacją. W końcu pochylimy się nad słynną liczbą π i zaproponujemy próbę jej czysto wizualnego przedstawienia. W ostatniej części artykułu zastanowimy się nad możliwością wskazywania wymiernych i niewymiernych liczb rzeczywistych, reprezentowanych przez bezwymiarowe punkty na prostej. Spróbujemy również przedstawić na płaszczyźnie prostą, która jak wiadomo ma długość, lecz nie ma szerokości. Powyższe zagadnienia pozwolą nam dostrzec, w jakim stopniu matematyka może być inspiracją dla sztuki, a także w jaki sposób sztuka może przybliżać i wyjaśniać zagadnienia matematyki.
In this article we would like to draw attention to the cognitive potential hidden in an image and in the art which employs it. We will focus on the visualization of basic mathematical objects i.e. irrational numbers. Our starting point will be the easy and intuitive case of the square root of two, as it is observed in the diagonal of a square. Next we will move over to the golden ratio hidden in a regular pentagon. With the visualization of the irrational number ϕ   we will use a looped, endless animation. Finally, we will have a closer look at the famous number π and we will suggest an attempt at its clearly visual representation. In the last section of the article we will consider the possibility of indicating rational and irrational real numbers represented by dimensionless points on a straight line. We will also try to present a straight line on a flat surface which - as we know has length - but has no width. The above issues will enable us to see the extent to which mathematics may be inspirational for art, as well as how art may familiarize us with mathematical issues and explain them.

We cause so much pollution that in the face of the growing pressure to take responsibility what we need is a questioning approach, reconsideration and initiatives. The most important question is what we are going to do about it to survive and scientists representing various disciplines have employed tools, methods and skills to carry out research, estimate the risk and opportunities and to recommend actions. Artists also have a say in it. I have collected this data from my anthropological point of view.

The article deals with teaching and researching stage speech on the supposition that researching stage speech influences how we teach stage speech. Stage speech is an artistic speech that researchers try to study and explain in a scientific manner, i.e. with scientific terminology and methods. Modern studies of stage speech are interdisciplinary (they combine phonetics and theatre studies, literary theory and history, sociology, etc.) and no longer just studies on a stricly linguistic (phonetic) level. The article shows a model of a scientific and interdisciplinary study of stage speech and its influence on or connection to how it is taught. The teaching of stage speech, which is shown on the example of students of Stage Acting at the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television, balances between science and art as well as between theory and practice. The article demonstrates that researching stage speech influences the teaching that is also interdisciplinary, based on artistic and scientific concepts and constantly combines theory and practice.

In this work an interesting overview concerning the human attempts in the description of the concept of infi nite is presented. Artists and scholars have long been interested in the relations between art and science. However, on account of the diverse and transgressive nature of these relations, they may escape attempts to classify them in accord with the traditional divisions of academic disciplines, which are so characteristic of contemporary times. These divisions also prove inadequate for consideration of the rapid technological and socio-cultural changes destabilizing the mutually autonomous territories of art and science. The author thus attempts to respond to the need for new conceptual frames that will allow the existing forms of collaboration between artists and scholars to be revealed and systematized in a more cross-sectional and reflective manner. For this purpose she proposes a new typology—a model organizing phenomena in which art combines with science.

Das Anthropozän-Kunstwerk ist an der Schnittstelle von Kunst und Wissenschaft angesiedelt, weil das Anthropozän selbst eine wissenschaftliche Konstruktion ist. Da das Anthropozän auf Auswirkungen der technologischen Entwicklung beruht, die keineswegs beabsichtigt sind, kann es nicht durch ethische Imperative eingedämmt werden. Vielmehr ist es das Ergebnis einer Erkenntnistheorie, die die Aktanten als Objekte verkennt. Daher fordert Bruno Latour eine Ästhetik, die Rückkopplungseffekte propagiert. Eine solche erkenntnistheoretisch zentrierte Kunst sollte sich auf die Multiplikation des Möglichen beschränken und ihre Autonomie aufgeben. Dieser Doktrin widerspricht Latour selbst, insofern das Ensemble der Aktanten zusammen mit dem vom Leben in den Kritischen Zonen bevölkerten Himmelskörper Gaia ein unbekanntes und wissenschaftlich kaum erforschtes Phänomen ist. So zieht sich eine Grenze des Nichtwissens durch die ökologische Kunst, die sich inmitten einer Transformnationsbewegung befindet.
Dzieło antropocenu sytuuje się na styku sztuki i nauki, ponieważ sam antropocen jest konstrukcją naukową. Jako że antropocen opiera się na efektach rozwoju technologicznego, które w żadnym wypadku nie są zamierzone, nie można go powstrzymać za pomocą imperatywów etycznych. Jest on raczej wynikiem epistemologii, która nie uznaje aktantów za przedmioty. Dlatego Bruno Latour domaga się estetyki propagującej efekty sprzężenia zwrotnego. Taka epistemologicznie skoncentrowana sztuka powinna ograniczyć się do multiplikowania tego, co możliwe, i zrezygnować ze swojej autonomii. The Anthropocene artwork is situated at the art/science interface because the Anthropocene is itself a scientific construction. Since the Anthropocene is based on effects of technological development that are by no means intentional, it cannot be contained by ethical imperatives. Rather, it is the result of an epistemology that fails to recognize actants as objects. Therefore, Bruno Latour calls for an aesthetics that propagates feedback effects. Such an epistemically centered art should limit itself to the multiplication of the possible and give up its autonomy. This doctrine is contradicted by Latour himself, insofar as the ensemble of actants, together with the celestial body Gaia populated by life in the Critical Zones, is an unknown and hardly scientifically penetrated phenomenon. Thus, a border of non-knowledge runs through ecological art, which is located in the middle of a transformation movement.
