The article is a discussion of the following issues: (a) moral significance of the so-called everyday life; (b) individuality of each man resulting from God's creative act; (c) uniqueness of man's fate due to God's permanent presence in every moment of his existence; (d) man's dignity, whose source is the fact that man is ontologically derived from God.

Opis:
The article considers the problem of relations between freedom, intellect and will in the context of Christian philosophy, and especially in the sphere of Karol Wojtyła's thought. The author comes to the following conclusions. Complete freedom is the so-called 'freedom to', that is freedom to do good for other people. Good acts are acts consistent with the conscience of the acting person as well as with rational premises. 'Freedom to' is different from 'freedom from' that consists in gaining independence from 'pressures of evil' (both outer and inner) that threaten man. In this way the author proclaims himself in favour of the intellectualist solution of the opposition will − intellect, that is of the Thomist solution, and against the standpoint of Duns Scotus (voluntarism).

The understanding of the function of symbols both in traditional and post-modern societies is one of the main tasks of contemporary anthropology. It is particularly apparent in the theoretical reflection of Victor Turner, a scholar who together with Clifford Geertz is thought to be the leading representative of symbolical anthropology. The explanation and interpretation of the symbols of religious rituals must in the very beginning emphasize the theoretically meaningful difference between a symbol and a sign. The processual-temporal analysis of symbol assumes that it is a living and active bearer of central values, such that dominate in a culture under investigation.

Opis:
The article analyzes the problem of the truth in John's Gospel. The author proposes the thesis that in the background of John's statement there is the `classical conception of the truth', that is the correspondence one. However, the range of this correspondence is broadened and encloses the existential relation. The first and fundamental pole of this relation of truthfulness is the ethos stated in the logos of John 3,14ff. The second pole of the relation is the catechumen. His existential entrance into the logos is the condition of being in the truth. John's being in the truth is not an unattainable ideal but a state achieved in the process of initiation as soon as the stage of catechumenate. This `being in' is of a different kind than moralistic, of a different category than pantheistic, and of a different type than Gnostic. We are dealing here with with sort of existential truth that reduces the problem of man to the deepest layer of being where man existing in separation from God, that is on the plane of existential falsehood, has an opportunity of being in the truth, on condition that he will submit to the process of `reanimation'. This is a process of initiation leading to existential salvation.

Opis:
The article is concerned with the question of rationalism and irrationalism as definitions appraising philosophical attitudes. The author takes into consideration the charge of irrationalism against the main representatives of the so-called postmodernism: J. F. Lyotard, J.Derrida, G. Deleuze. He formulates the proposition that reason is one thing and the so-called operating intellect is another. Each philosophy has to use reason in the course of studying various aspects of reality, in the course of analyses concerning the nature of man and his products. However, there are aspects of the world that cannot be `seen through' by means of operating intellect. Hence the author conseders the phrase `irrational philosophy' as contradictio in adiecto. No philosophical system may be constructed completely on clear definitions; there always has to remain something that is the subject of intuition, something that cannot be distinctly defined. Descartes' rationalism may be an example illustrating this proposition. His philosophical system is ultimately based on the intuitively given cogito and the intuitively presented idea of infinity (God). Radical criticism of phenomenology offered by postmodernists has led to a vision of reality utterly depraved of foundations (anarchical). The author disagrees with such a way of philosophising. Instead, he thinks that P. Ricoeur's hermeneutics is the best tool for describing basic human existential experiences.

In our anthropological considerations today we refer to the conclusions given by C. Geertz. They may seem to have only a historical character. The paper sought to show symptoms which prove that Geertz's thought has not so much been revitalized as its success has never been on the wane. Similarly as in the case of British anthropology, which is in principal pursued in the functional-structural spirit, bringing to mind the „immortal” figure of Malinowski, so Geertz's works were read in the United States in the 1960s. At the moment, they are also read in Indonesia, in such countries as, for instance, China, Germany, Russia, Holland, or Portugal.

Opis:
The subject of the article is the dramaturgy of the turn of the 19th century in the aspect of the changes that occur in understanding what is religious, and more exactly – what is Christian, in it. The article has a general character as we still do not have a sufficient amount of detailed analyses of the works of the writers undertaking religious subjects. It is pointed that in the studied period a basic polarization took place between the `cultural' reference to the Christian roots of the European civilization, and an attempt to penetrate in a `live' way into the truths of the faith contained in Christ's paschal message. The discussed breakthrough determines the crisis of culture and religion that has been noticed by numerous researchers. The changes are studied in the dramaturgy of the Young Poland period (Młoda Polska) with the use of a wide perspective of understanding the anthropological crisis. The fact is pointed to that moral relativism and the contestation of the Christian vision of man and God in the modernistic works had their source in religious modernism that tried to reconcile the Christian Revelation with the conclusions reached by agnosticism and history approached in the positivist way. The Young Poland dramas are characterized by various forms of tragedy in the presented world and characters. They created forms of stage literature that have the features of existential tragedy connected with fatalism of history (Szandlerowski) and destruction of moral values (Kasprowicz), as well as with a loss of personal and historical identity (Wyspiański).

The study tries to define the anthropology of dialogue as a specific way of thinking on human being; it grounds mainly in Tzvetan Todorov's findings. It comments basic theses of Buber, Levinas, Bachtin, Habermas and Todorov while underlining their mutual interpretability as well as similarity. Because of possible significance of this anthropological conception for professional teacher training, it recommends to reserve some space for the anthropology of dialogue in the area of the philosophy of education thus enabling it to come out of the shadow of more influential anthropological conceptions.

Acient materials from Wilanow were excavated nearly 40 years ago. It was researched by professor Wiercinski but the results of this work did not appear (it was published only cranial researching). We decided to finish this project – make inventoring, measure, and compare our results. So, the aim of work is to examinate the structure of Wilanow’s population dated back to the early Middle Ages. The whole series is represented by 75 skulls and 48 sketetons. A lot of skulls are very fragmentary, and the analysis is based on the descriptions only of 49 skulls (21 male, 25 female and 3 children). The skulls form Wilanow are interesting because they are approaching the border of brachycephalic. This population is quite different from that one having lived in Poland and dated from this same age. This problem should be researched in the future.

This paper concerns the present and most important environmental problems related to the state of environment and economic development on the local, national and world scale. The material consists of 414 pupils from the last grade of high schools: 108 boys and 88 girls from the two schools with higher level of education (HEL) and 106 boys and 112 girls from two schools with lower level of education (LEL). The George H. Gallup Institute inquiry was used and pupils answered on 13 questions. The survey was conducted fromOctober to November 2003. Pupils were surveyed via face to face interviews. Answers were considered regarding the level of education and gender of responders, as well as it was compared with results of the 1992 Gallup Institute survey from 22 nations covering most continents and all levels of economic  development. In each country, representative samples of adults (generally 1000 or more) were investigated. The Warsaw youth better estimates the quality of their local environment (Warsaw) than nation’s and world’s one. So do the majority of respondents from 22 countries. The most important environmental problem facing Poland, according to Warsaw pupils, is general pollution, whereas the majority of respondents from 22  countries are more likely to volunteer air and water pollution. The answer for the question “which one – the government, business and industry or citizens have the primary responsibility for protecting the environment?” is different comparing the Warsaw youth and respondents from 22 nations. The first one points to citizens, whereas the majority of respondents from most nations assign primary responsibility for environmental protection to the government. Majority of respondents in Warsaw and in 22 nations state that environmental protection should have priority even at the risk of slowing down economic growth.  Responders from Warsaw, Asia, East and West Europe and Scandinavia charge local environmental problems like poor water and air quality as very serious. The cause of nation’s environmental problem the high school pupils see in waste by individuals, however across the 22 nations responders are most likely to point to business and industry as the major contributors of these problems. According to actions the government could take to help solve environmental problems the Warsaw youth and majority of the Gallup survey  responders point to stronger environmental protection laws for business and industry. The only responders of nations with high income ban the sale of products that are unsafe for the environment. Over half of the Warsaw youth and most responders from high income nations indicate a willingness to pay higher prices for increased environmental protection. Majority of the high school pupils and responders of 22 nations are more likely to see citizen actions as being effective for environmental protection (answers: great deal, fair amount). The personal involvement in adding the environment is base on avoiding environmentally harmful products - such declaration give most of responders from Warsaw, as well as from 22 nations. The the Warsaw youth and majority of responders from the Gallup survey point to loss of rain forest as the global problem. Majority of responders both from Warsaw and 22 nations say that they either “strongly favor” or “somewhat favor” their own government “contributing money to an international agency to work on solving global environmental problems.” The problem of responsibility for world’s environmental problem is seen a little different by nations according to their economic level. The responders of low and middle income ations, including the Warsaw youth, blame both, industrialized and developing nations for this problem, whereas high income responders are most likely to blame developed nations only. The comparison according to gender and levels of education reveled that girls act more determinedly and with larger commitment in answering the questions concerning current environmental problems, and this is more express in the school with HEL than LEL. The reverse situation is seen in boys where those more active attend the LEL schools. The important conclusion concerns the open-ended question: “Thinking about our nation as a whole, what is the most important environmental problem facing our nation?” There were much more responders from the LEL schools saying “I do not know” (25% of boys and 30% of girls) than from the HEL schools (11% and 15%, respectively). This shows how important is to include the environmental education to the school educational program in the whole country.

The article discusses Issues shared by tourism and the historical anthropology of culture. Its aim is to draw attention to hidden meanings in the spiritual and material traces of the past. Following a short introduction discussing the origins and cultural evolution of humanity, the author passes on to the following issues: how did the evolution of selfperception progress; how was the surrounding world perceived and interpreted: what was the role of caves and labyrinths: how has the spirit of place been perceived; how significant to tourism are 'traces of the past and the ability to read them?

Environmental anthropology is a much wider term than ecology itself because of its extensive and diverse issues. The environmental questions appeared significantly in anthropology in the 1950 s with the Julian Stewards cultural ecology. Later Andrew Vayda and Roy Rappaport suggested the term known as ecosystem ecology. From the late 1970s, evolutionary ecology has become more popular. The other attempts to the issues of the natural environment within the confines of anthropology are ethnoecology, historic ecology, global ecology, and landscape ecology. The problem of acceleration of growing processes during childhood and adolescence has been considered for a long time. The observations on this subject date back to the 19th century, however the attempts to summarize this phenomenon were dated to the 20th century. At the beginning of the 20th century Stratz, distinguishing the period of early and late childhood, had mentioned about three periods of deceleration and two periods of acceleration of growing processes. In 1930 also Boas identified the pubertal spurt. Ones of the first longitudinal studies had been organized in Krakow by Talko-Hryncewicz and continued in 1919-32. The results had been elaborated by Jasicki in 1934-48 and he revealed that there are two periods of acceleration of growing processes. In Poland this acceleration in growth had been called “the maximal height velocity.” The growth spurt at the end of childhood (around 7 years) has been pointed out by many authors in the 1930s, and in 1947 Tanner called it the mid-growth spurt. In 1961 Wolański pointed out that there are several growth spurts in childhood and called them pre (school) spurts. Consequently, in 1962 he had distinguished pubertal spurts for many somatic characteristics, and in 1964 – at least two pubertal spurts in height. Wolański had been analyzing the age at pubertal spurt followed by the age at menarche in rural and urban girls and concluded that these events are further apart if the pubertal spurt occurs later. The further analysis of these phenomena had been postponed because of the unfortunate statistical methods which presented data as mathematically smoothed growth curves and many details of individual growth patterns have been eliminated.Only two last decades the daily and monthly studies of growth processes have returned to favor, and the relationship between the rate and age at prepubertal and pubertal spurts has been studied again. In about 1980 the growth spurt at the turn of childhood and juvenile periods was again under study, but only during the last decade several growth spurts have been manifested. The number of prepubertal growth spurts has a very important impact on age and velocity of the pubertal spurt. If the number of prepubertal spurs is grater, the pubertal spurt occurs later and is less manifested. There are still many controversies according to the age of pubertal spurt and final body height. It may be similar to the relationship between menarche and final body height. It is observed that between populations there is a negative correlation between age at menarche and adult height, whereas between women within the population this correlation is positive (Wolański 1979).

The paper covers the issue of cultural and ethnological perspective in contemporary criminology. The author presents various theories that are currently developing worldwide, addressing the problem of the role of culture (in the anthropological sense of the word) and its influence on the aetiology of criminal behaviour, social reaction to crime, and creation of role-modelling in different societies. The presentation is focussed mostly on the cultural and criminological comparison of three countries the United States of America, Great Britain and Canada – and their homicide data. These countries, although seemingly similar in many ways when traditionally analysed in criminology, differ significantly in terms of murder – not only statistically, but also at a deeper and more complex historical level. The author describes these differences, arguing that the cultural approach to criminological issues is crucial in explaining violence. The last part of the paper focuses on case-study examples from all the three countries under discussion; this serves as an illustration to the author’s postulate of incorporating the ethnological studies and research into the system of criminology.

Pierwszą część artykułu stanowi opis wydarzeń z 2004 roku, związanych z organizowaniem Festiwalu „Kultura dla Tolerancji” i negatywnych nań reakcji wielu środowisk.
