The article starts with a summary of discussion that erupted after the publication of the Zebrało się śliny anthology with regard to the phenomenon of “engaged poetry.” According to the author, there has emerged a group of poets who directly and actively refer in their works to current discourses, including new animal theories. This “animal” engagement of new Polish poetry is realized within three basic conceptual frameworks: connections with capitalism, analogies between animal exploitation and the patriarchal system, as well as the process of technocratization.

Ornithology, ornithomancy. Sokołowski and (other) birds of Jerzy Ficowski The starting point for my article was Jerzy Ficowski’s poem Do autora “Ptaków ziem polskich”. The poem, found in the poet’s penultimate volume – Zawczas z poniewczasem (2004) is commemorating Jan Sokołowski (1899–1982). He was a prominent ornithologist, one of the contemporary forerunners of the field, a pioneer of bird protection in Poland, and, above all, a visionary who in his work exhibited an innovatively personal approach to animals. The language he used was commonly regarded as anthropomorphic, since he attributed animals with emotions. In the article, I deal with poetic traces of both deliberate and accidental relations between Ficowski’s work and the ornithological work of Sokołowki. At the same time I attempt at a reconstruction of the advice that the author of Pantarei gained from the so to speak indirect consultations with the scholar. This allowed him to set the birds free in terms of cultural code of symbolic meaning. By referring to fairly numerous poems of Ficowski in which animals are present as main characters I prove that in both his and Sokołowski’s representation they are in fact quite similar. This, naturally, is done in different registers, however they both paid special attention to both ornithological faithfulness and what is beyond the reach of science, i.e. attempting to reflect the inner life of birds. Komiksy dla dzieci są znaczącą częścią rynku książki nie tylko w Polsce. Pozycje te są istotne, ponieważ przygotowują młodych odbiorców do aktywnego uczestnictwa w kulturze. Autor artykułu szczegółowo przeanalizował i zinterpretował najnowsze polskie komiksy adresowane do najmłodszych czytelników pod kątem wątków animalistycznych. W pierwszej kolejności podzielił wybrane utwory na dwie grupy: te, w których zwierzęta towarzyszą człowiekowi oraz takie, gdzie zwierzęta są głównymi bohaterami (klasyczne oraz hybrydowe – łączące komiks z innymi formami wypowiedzi). Badacz przywołał przykłady takie jak: Którędy do Yellowstone? Dzika podróż po parkach narodowych (Aleksandra i Daniel Mizielińscy), cykl „Umarły las” (Adam Wajrak, Tomasz Samojlik), „Bardzo dzika opowieść” (Marcin Podolec, Tomasz Samojlik), „Detektyw Miś Zbyś na tropie” (Maciej Jasiński oraz Piotr Nowacki) czy „Rysiek i Królik” (Łukasz Piotrkowicz, Krzysztof Budziejewski, Katarzyna Urbaniak). Przedstawiając wybrane dzieła, autor tekstu posłużył się stanowiskami polskich badaczy komiksu (Wojciech Birek, Jerzy Szyłak, Michał Traczyk), ale powołał się także na naukowców specjalizujących się w dziedzinie Animal Studies (Anna Wąs, Piotr Skubała, Mirosław Twardowski). Artykuł stanowi przegląd różnych rozwiązań formalnych zastosowanych przez autorów (karty, stylistyka kadrów, hybrydy gatunkowe).
Comics for children are a significant part of the book market, not only in Poland. These titles are important because they prepare young readers for active participation in culture. The article’s author analyzed and interpreted in detail the most recent Polish comic books addressed to the youngest readers regarding animalistic themes. First, he divided the selected works into two groups: those in which animals accompany humans and those in which animals are the main characters (classic and hybrid, combining comics with other forms of expression). The researcher cited examples such as: Którędy do Yellowstone? Dzika podróż po parkach narodowych [Which way to Yellowstone? A wild journey through the national parks] (Aleksandra and Daniel Mizielińscy), the series “Umarły las” [Dead forest] (Adam Wajrak, Tomasz Samojlik), “Detektyw Miś Zbyś na tropie” [Detective Zbyś the Bear on the trail] (Maciej Jasiński and Piotr Nowacki) and “Rysiek i Królik” [Rysiek and Królik] (Łukasz Piotrkowicz, Krzysztof Budziejewski, Katarzyna Urbaniak). When presenting selected works, the author uses the approaches of Polish comics researchers (Wojciech Birek, Jerzy Szyłak, Michał Traczyk), but he also refers to the researchers specializing in Animal Studies (Anna Wąs, Piotr Skubała, Mirosław Twardowski). The article is a review of various formal solutions utilized by the authors (cards, stylistics of frames, genre hybrids).

The article’s starting point is to recognize what is the relation between the cultural animal studies and empirical research, particularly: what is the role of the cognitive ethology in the humanities, what kind of merger we are observing, and if and how transdisciplinarity is possible here. One of the solutions, presented in the article, is to analyse animal texts of culture within a zoocritic perspective. This perspective aims at developing animal studies in the humanities, especially with regard to fiction, and narrows too wide and variated studies about animals down into a critical tool. Zoocriticism is introduced in the article on the example of Polish interwar poem about the tiger written by Tytus Czyżewski – it is a narrated by the author of the article experiment to experience the world from the perspective of the predator; it is a trial to perceive the reality in the posthuman way enabled by this zoopoetic text.

The article is a cross-sectional study that analyses contemporary Polish poets’ metapoetic reflections on anthroponormative language and their ways of elaborating alternative ways of representing animals. They often unveil oppressive animalistic metaphors, i.a. writting as hunting, and create less obvious ones, for example the poem as an animal. This kind of image commits both the author and the reader of the poem to care – they are both somehow obligated not to objectify animals in their interpretations. By referring to poems (written by Magdalena Bielska, Stanisław Grochowiak, Ryszard Krynicki, Piotr Matywiecki, Krystyna Miłobędzka, Jacek Podsiadło, Wisława Szymborska, Eugeniusz Tkaczyszyn-Dycki) and inspiring essays by Tadeusz Sławek, the author of this article formulates and leads out a concept of post-koine, which is a language critical towards any too narrow idea of the community (koine), the language of a new interspecies community, an inclusive language devoid of violence against animals.

Tekst jest poświęcony właściwościom medium filmowego, które sprawiają, że może ono być skutecznym narzędziem w studiach nad zwierzętami, szczególnie kina związanego z kwestią korporalności, śmierci i mechanicznego ożywiania „martwych”, nieruchomych obiektów. Na przykładzie kilku filmów z pogranicza kina i sztuk wizualnych (Zwierzę, zwierzęta, reż. Nicolas Philibert, 1996; Sirius Remembered, reż. Stan Brakhage, 1959; Kala Azar, reż. Janis Rafa, 2020) autor analizuje, jak refleksja na temat ciał zwierząt pozwala wydobyć paradoksalną właściwość kina polegającą na jednoczesnej widmowości i materialności tego medium. Autor, odwołując się do historycznych związków kina i muzeum historii naturalnej, proponuje kategorię „kina taksydermicznego”. Pozwala to wskazać na rolę kina w rozpoznaniu ludzkiej bezbronności i cielesnej kruchości (vulnerability), którą w obliczu śmierci ludzie dzielą z innymi zwierzętami.
The author analyses the film medium as an effective tool in animal studies, focusing on the issues of death and ability to re-animate dead bodies. Based on the analysis of several films (Un animal, des animaux, dir. Nicolas Philibert, 1996; Sirius Remembered, dir. Stan Brakhage, 1959; Kala Azar, dir. Janis Rafa, 2020), the author shows how reflection on animal bodies and animal death brings out a paradoxical feature of cinema – its simultaneous corporeality and spectrality. Referring to the historical connections between cinema and natural history museums, the author proposes the category of a “taxidermic cinema”. This allows him to point to the role of cinema in recognizing human “vulnerability”, shared in the face of death with other animals.

The article Extra-educational Bestiary? Transformation of Animal Paradise Motif in Polish Young Adult Fantastic Literature is an attempt to define a new argument for a possibility of animal immortality on the basis of fantasy literature for children and young adults. For this purpose, Ewelina Rąbkowska analyzes three examples of the theme of animal paradise in Polish animal fantasy novels for children and young adults. The main hypothesis of the article is that intuition of fantasy literature tells—in the same way as (defined in some previous papers) “poetical intuition”—stories about significant relationships between humans and non-humans, which last longer than single life. The author argues that contemporary fantasies for young adults are examples of crossing the borders of a traditional anthropocentric point of view. They show a new, post-humanist discourse about animals, change the language, narrative strategies and—what is most important—traditional didactic purposes of the text.

Human sciences as a reflection of social transformations fluctuate with dynamic changes of current cognitive paradigms. Following the textual and visual turn and the turn towards things (objects), there are intensified tendencies to think in terms of an “animal turn”, which becomes close not only to activists and pro-animal activists but also to scientifically engaged humanists. I believe, however, that the animal turn should be treated as a meta-turn: a process that requires a change in the relationship between the reflecting subject and the object of reflection, and not only as a specific kind of representation of the surrounding world. In the proposed text, I attempt to analyze the causes of the turn towards animals. I also address the theme of cognitive resistance in view of the recognition of animal studies as a fully-fledged theoretical and research area of contemporary humanities.

W organizacji hitlerowskich obozów koncentracyjnych ważną rolę pełniły psy strażnicze i tropiące. Acz wszechobecne w świadectwach więźniów jako budzące przerażenie bestie, to w kulturowej świadomości występują jedynie jako złowrogi ornament obozowej scenerii. Podobnie marginalne miejsce zajmuje figura „hitlerowskiego psa” w tekstach polskiej kultury popularnej. Autor opracowania stawia sobie za cel bliższe przyjrzenie się temu motywowi w zbiorowej świadomości, a zwłaszcza w polskiej twórczości filmowej. Przybliża też system, w obrębie którego wykorzystywano psy. Asumpt do tych rozważań daje osadzony fabularnie w pookupacyjnej rzeczywistości interesujący film Adriana Panka „Wilkołak” z 2018 roku. Czerpiący z estetyki horroru i baśni, historyczny obraz wykorzystuje kulturowe konotacje figury obozowego psa dla ukazania uniwersalnych prawd o ludzkiej kondycji.
Guard and hunting dogs played an important role in the organization of Nazi concentration camps. Although ubiquitous in the prisoners’ testimonies as terrifying beasts, they only appear in the cultural consciousness as an ominous ornament of the camp scenery. The figure of the „Nazi dog” occupies a similarly marginal place in the texts of Polish popular culture. The author of the study aims to take a closer look at this motif in collective consciousness, and especially in Polish filmmaking. It also introduces the system in which dogs were used. Embedded in the post-occupational reality, the interesting film by Adrian Panek, ‚The Werewolf’, gives rise to these considerations. Drawing on the aesthetics of horror and fairy tales, this historical image uses the cultural connotations of the figure of a camp dog to show universal truths about the human condition.

The paper examines the causes and symptoms of animalistic dehumanisation through the analysis of connotations of several terms used to conceptualise undesirable individuals and groups across various cultures, focusing on four source domains: rat, cattle, wolf, and dog.

The text concerns the camp for political prisoners established in 1949 in Yugoslavia on Goli Otok island. This theme was almost entirely absent from public discourse before the 1980s, and real changes and developments in discussions about this part of the history of postwar Yugoslavia occurred only after Tito’s death. Goli Otok as the largest and most infamous camp in communist Yugoslavia is considered a symbol, its name recognized as a synonym of a physical and psychological system for destroying people. In the text I analyze autobiographical texts written by women prisoners (such as Milka Žicina and Vera Cenić). A large number of female inmates were sentenced just for being related to or keeping close contact with a male “enemy of the state”. Thus women were treated not as independent subjects, but as mothers, sisters and wives subordinate to male family members. The social exclusion of women prisoners and their families exacerbated the feeling of isolation and continued after leaving the camp. I am interested in the detail of the strategies of storytelling which are related to spirituality (focusing on nature) both during the period of isolation, when they searched for a way to survive it, as well as after release when the women tried to start a new life.

The aim of the article is to indicate a recurring motif in the writings devoted to Nazi concentration camps. In many of the accounts of male and female internees the camp was described as a place “where birds did not sing”. As a territory over which there spun an empty silent sky. “A Birdless Sky”. The author of the study, utilising various sources, attempted to study the phenomenon from different perspectives. The results of scientific ornithological studies conducted by Günther Niethammer, a scientist and an SS guard at KL Auschwitz proved a rather unexpected point of reference for the voices of the internees. The presented article refers to the increasingly lively contemporary research into the topics of Lager and Holocaust literatures. Ecocriticism and environmentalism have been some of the more significant inspirations of the proposed discussion. By introducing a post-anthropocentric perspective, the author was able to expand the historical field to include non-human beings (animals, plants, landscapes).

Filozofia europejska, umieszczając człowieka w centrum zainteresowania, podporządkowała mu otaczający go świat, co znacząco wpłynęło na jego relacje ze zwierzętami, również w przestrzeni miejskiej. Zgodnie z filozofią zachodnioeuropejską, świat przyrody, w tym zwierzęta, zepchnięte zostały m.in. do sfery materii oraz grzechu. Zmianę podejścia do zwierząt domowych, tj. kotów i psów, można zauważyć w XIX wieku dzięki czasopismom poświęconym tematyce animalistycznej. Na przykładzie polskich miast XIX wieku oraz w oparciu o materiały źródłowe scharakteryzowany zostanie wizerunek zwierząt w domach miejskich. Obraz ten zostanie zestawiony ze współczesnym wyobrażeniem zwierząt domowych na podstawie ankiet przeprowadzonych wśród opiekunów zwierząt we Wrocławiu.
European philosophical positions placed the man in the center of interest, subordinating him to the surrounding world, which greatly influenced his relationship with animals, also in urban space. According to the philosophy of Western Europe, the natural world, including animals, was to the sphere of matter and sin. The change of approach to pets, i.e. cats and dogs, can be seen in the nineteenth century, thanks to the journals devoted to animalistic themes. On the example of Polish cities of the 19th century and on the basis of source materials, the image of animals in urban houses will be characterized. This image will be compiled with the contemporary imagination of pets based on surveys conducted among animal careers in Wroclaw.

Artykuł dotyczy refleksji nad przekazywaniem zwierzęcego doświadczenia w tekstach literackich. Skupia się na „czułości” jako kategorii metodologiczno-literackiej wprowadzonej przez Olgę Tokarczuk i analizuje jej funkcjonowanie w powieści Prowadź swój pług przez kości umarłych. Takie próby poszukiwania języka Innego kierują ludzki podmiot w stronę międzygatunkowego współbycia i współodczuwania, a gest narracyjnego otwierania się na doświadczenie zwierzęcia staje się majeutyczną metodą przekazywania tego, co zwierzęce i nieświadomie. Podjęta zostanie również próba refleksji nad tym czy narrator oddający głos zwierzęciu nie uzurpuje sobie prawa do przekazywania zwierzęcego doświadczenia.
The article deals with a reflection on the transfer of animal experience in literary texts. It focuses on “tenderness” as a methodological and literary category introduced by Olga Tokarczuk and analyzes its functioning in the novel Drive Your Plow over the Bones of the Dead. Such attemptsto search for the language of “the Other” direct the human subject towards interspecies coexistence and compassion. The narrative gesture of opening up to the animal’s experience becomes a method of transmitting what is animal and unconscious. An attempt will also be made to reflect on whether the narrator giving voice to the animal is usurping the right to transmit the animal’s experience.
