Opis:
The physician Krateuas lived in the first part of the 1st century BC, worked at the court of Mithridates and wrote a Rhizotomikon (Herbal) of which only a few fragments remain. More than a century ago, Max Wellmann studied this physician (1897; 1898) and collected his Testimonies (T) and Fragments (F) as an appendix of his edition of Dioscorides De materia medica (1914). After Wellmann, only short studies (mostly encyclopedia entries) have been carried on Krateuas, whose work influenced Dioscorides. This paper is a first step towards a monograph on this physician and a new edition of T and F with translation and historical commentary.

Opis:
Animals were as inextricable a part as they were indicative of the system of common ancient Egyptian beliefs. Their special role was manifested in a rich iconography and in multitudes of animal mummies deposited in the major sacral complexes. Seen in this light, the cemetery of small animals of 1st–2nd century AD date, excavated since 2011 in the Red Sea port town of Berenike, comes across as entirely unique, notwithstanding the spiritual aspects of cats, dogs and monkeys. Contrary to Egyptian animal burials of all periods associated with human ones, the Berenike inhumations were not intended as afterlife companions of their last owners; neither were they ever mummified. Recent results of research present the variety of species kept in the households and insight into their behaviour. Pathological changes on one of the dog skeletons suggest a deadly condition, that is, osteosarcoma. The Berenike data also shed new light on the distribution of the cat beyond Egypt and a rising preference for keeping the animal as a pet in Europe and the Middle East.

One of the most mysterious concepts in ancient geography are the Riphaean Mountains that had for centuries been the object of mythological, cosmological, geographic, cartographic, and poetic discourses. Having originated as a designation of the northern (in relation to Greece) Thracian mountain, the name in the course of time became attached to the mountains located in the extreme north of the oecumene. Cosmological ideas explaining the rising of the earth's surface to the north, the passage of the sun after sunset through the northern outskirts of the oecumene behind the Riphaean Mountains eastward, and many others were associated with these mountains. In ancient literature the Riphaean Mountains are often associated with a blessed people of the Hyperboreans who seemed to live beyond the Riphaean Mountains in a particularly favorable climate. In this paper the attempts of ancient cartographers to locate the Riphaean Mountains on a geographical map will be considered.

The article discusses various attitudes towards foreigners that can be perceived in ancient Egyptian material. It is argued that there was no single and unchangeable attitude towards foreigners throughout ancient Egyptian history, but instead that Egyptian attitudes to foreigners changed over time due to various historical and social factors. It is also argued that these attitudes reflected a constant negotiation between the traditional and stereotypical perception of foreigners as enemies of the Egyptian state and more nuanced approaches in which foreigners could have a number of roles to play in Egyptian society, which often led to significant transformations of Egyptians’ self-identity. Therefore, the traditional image of ancient Egypt as a highly xenophobic culture is called into question.

Calabria is a region where we may find many traces of very old settlements and the development of human civilization, because it was already inhabited during the Paleolithic Era. Its later, over two thousand years history is characterized by the influence of such ethno-cultural groups as the Greeks, the Brutti, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Saracens and the Normans. Hence, Calabria has become an infinite source of fascination for all who seek the remains of ancient times in Italy. The purpose of my article is to present the history of Scolacium – one of the ancient towns in the Italian province of Calabria basing, above all, on selected literary evidence on the issue. My studies concentrate mainly on pointing out the numerous references and allusions to its name and on the analysis of longer or shorter depictions of the town found in various Greek and Roman literary works and their application in a chronological reconstruction of the town’s past events as an example of historical processes observed on the territory of Magna Graecia.

The amount and timing of meals in various monasteries evolved with the development of Christian monasticism. Although he founded numerous communities, the creator of the first “Rule,” Pachomius, did not see the need to precisely regulate this issue. However, successive authors writing rules increasingly addressed this problem. An analysis of selected rules reveals that a peak in the development of monastic legislation concerning this matter was the rules of Benedict and the mysterious Master, which regulated even the amount of bread that monks should eat each day.

Opis:
The article presents the view of the ancient Greeks and Romans on abortion from the ethical and anthropological point of view. The author analyses selected literary works of ancient Greek and Roman authors. The analysis leads to several conclusions. In ancient Greece and Rome children were considered a divine blessing and a treasure, while sterility was regarded as a misfortune and a divine punishment, but the killing of children in their mothers’ wombs was practiced, and even born children were put to death for eugenic reasons. This view was represented by Plato and Aristotle, despite their notion that the fetus was animated as early as the mother’s womb. The Stoics who claimed that the fetus was merely a part of the mother did not see any problem with abortion at every stage of pregnancy. Thus, abortion was practiced, but it also drew condemnation from society. It was perceived as a crime deserving of divine and human punishment, as testified by the works of Aeschylus, Cicero, Ovid, and Juvenal.

An example of this formula usage is the prayer utterance of one of the national epic’s charac- ter, the Annals of Quintus Ennius (Ann. I 26 Skutsch). Since, for the purposes of literary research, significant is only the first triad of this historic poem, the research was limited to Book I of the work. The realism of portrayed events is a dominant feature of the world depicted in the analyzed work and, in an essential manner, it influenced Roman religious ideals. The prayer of Aeneas to Tiber- inus – the god of the Tiber River, is therefore reviewed in a context of mythological topics taken from Homeric tradition. This sacral utterance is spoken in accordance to certain stylistic and ritual patterns that were in use in Roman poetry.

Opis:
The author discusses Malcolm Heath’s book Ancient Philosophical Poetics, in which Heath attempts to present ancient Greek philosophical views on poetry to both an academic audience and non-specialists. Leading with the warning that the essay is not concerned with what literary theory looked like in ancient Greece, but rather how philosophy looked at poetry, Heath reveals the views of the philosophers on truth and goodness in poetry. Though most often these views relegate poetry to a lower status than philosophy (Heath’s focus is on the philosophy of Plato and the Platonists, with some consideration given to Aristotle), Ancient Philosophical Poetics demonstrates conclusively that, for example, the famous Platonic dictum that poets should be exiled form the ideal state is really a call to read their work with greater insight. The author of this essay presents and commends Heath’s book as an example of a highly contemporary approach to ancient philosophy and poetics, and simultaneously one refreshingly free of anachronism.

European countries share certain features, roots and, to a large extent, history. If one adds to this the contribution of Christianity and barbarian tribes, one may reconstruct an adequate representation of the “roots of Europe.”

Dating and time-reckoning has always meant a lot more than simply keeping track of time. It is of course true that from very early times onwards all people, either pastoralists or agriculturalist, had to take the seasons - which means the solar cycle - into account for the simple reason of bare survival. Since a year is far too long for many practical arrangements the omnipresence of the moon provided a perfect solution, the moon's phases turned out to be an ideal length to divide one year into smaller units. The integration of a lunar cycle into the solar system is not self-evident though and the astronomical knowledge of people can often be judged by the way they tried to solve this dilemma. Still, a lot more factors come into play when time-reckoning and dating systems come into being. Both in the calendar - the division of every individual year - and in year-counting - some kind of superstructure for several years - religious, cultic, ideological and political elements played an important role. Since the sun, the stars and the moon were regularly worshipped in most religions in Antiquity, their cycles often determined religious festivals and other cultic events and therefore the calendar was closely linked with religion. Ideology, especially royal ideology, is found mainly in the system of year-counting.

Opis:
The second half of the 3rd century saw the Seleucid monarchy weaken considerably. The reign of Seleucus II brought difficult battles against Ptolemy III Euergetes (the Third Syrian War) and attempts to overcome massive internal problems. During the war against Egypt, he ultimately managed to recapture northern Syria but Ptolemy III held on to the port of Seleucia Pieria, which was key for the Seleucids, and captured a number of places in Asia Minor. It was there that the Seleucids suffered their greatest territorial losses - they lost almost all their footholds on the coasts of Cilicia, Lycia, Caria and Ionia. The Egyptian king even seized Ainos and Maronea on the Thracian coast. What also had an impact on Seleucus II losing his influences in Asia Minor was his fratricidal war against Antiochus Hierax, backed by the kings of Pergamon, Capadocia and Bithynia. The defeated Seleucus had to reconcile himself with his brother's independence in Asia Minor, the latter, however, subsequently suffered a defeat in his war against Pergamon, which ultimately led to the Seleucids losing their Asian Minor territories. The dynasty also faced enormous challenges in the East, where Bactria and Sogdiana seceded, and Parthia was seized by the Parni.

Absence of sources is why we know little about the last kings of the Seleucid dynasty and their reigns. One exception is Demetrius III (97/96-88/87 BC), a son of Antiochus VIII Grypus. What knowledge we have of him we owe to his role in the history of Judea at the end of Alexander Jannaeus' reign (103-86 BC). Josephus' historical works suggest that the king of Syria became involved in a conflict which broke out in Judea between Alexander Jannaeus and a group of his opponents led by the Pharisees. In doing so, he lent the latter his powerful military assistance. It proved so substantial that in a battle near Shechem Alexander Jannaeus' army was defeated. Only a lucky coincidence enabled him still to stay in power and soon to suppress his opposition (cf. Jos. BJ 1, 92-95, AJ 13, 376-379). This historical episode is exceptional in that Demetrius III was the first king of Syria since Antiochus VII Sidetes to stand on Judean soil and, at that, as an ally of one of local religious groups. It is this fact that makes the event worth looking at through the lens of not only the confl ict between Alexander Jannaeus and the Pharisees, but also of Demetrius III's objectives in interfering in Judea's internal affairs.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the analysis of the names of food and drink in the Ladder of John Climacus. The material for analysis is the published text of the work (Patrologia Graeca, vol. LXXXVIII) and three unpublished ancient Greek manuscripts of the Ladder. In total, 21 words were found in the work, included in the lexical-semantic group “Food”, and 6 words included in the lexical-semantic group “Drink”. In many cases, lexemes are used in pairs (salt and oil, milk and honey, bread and water, bread and mustard). This use is obviously due to the biblical tradition, on the basis of which the author of the Ladder built his book. For the general designation of food, nouns such as βρῶμα, τροφή, τρυφή, βρῶσις, ἔδεσμα, ἑστίασις, ὄψον, τράπεζα, ἐδώδιμον are used. In a collective sense, the lexemes καρπός and ὀπώρα are used to designate fruits. For the names of vegetables (herbs) in the Ladder, lexemes such as πικρίς and λάχανον are used. Of the specific types of food in the Ladder, there are names of baked goods (ἄρτος ‘bread’ and ἄζυμον ‘unleavened bread’), grapes (βότρυς and ῥάγας), spices (ἔλαιον ‘olive oil’ and ἅλας ‘salt’), honey (μέλι) and cheese (τυρός). To designate drink, in general, in the Ladder there are the lexemes πόμα, νάμα and ποτόν. Specific drinks are called ὕδωρ ‘water’, οἶνος ‘wine’ and γάλα ‘milk’. In the lexical-semantic groups “Food” and “Drink” hyperonyms clearly prevail over hyponyms. The small amount of specific vocabulary is explained by the fact that for a monk, as he moves up the ladder of virtues, it is less and less important what food he consumes. Monks who have reached the highest degrees of spiritual life (ἰσάγγελοι, equal to the angels) no longer feel the taste of food and forget to take it; for them the most important thing is spiritual food. In the lexico-semantic groups “Food” and “Drink” in the Ladder, as in the texts of the Holy Scriptures, direct (physical) and figurative (spiritual) meanings are masterfully connected. Almost all examples of the use of these words can be viewed both in the direct and in the symbolic sense. In the highest metaphorical meaning, all lexemes included in the thematic field “Nutrition” represent a symbol of participation in God’s salvation in Christ.

The peach (Prunus persica [L.] Batsch) is a tree native to the region known today as Northwest China, where its fruits were known around 2000 BC. Inhabitants of the Mediterranean Area came into contact with the peach probably between the 6th and 4th century BC thanks to the contacts with Persian Empire. In the western part of the Mediterranean Region the peach appeared later (ca. 1st c. AD). In the period under study there were many varieties of the peach, and they were eaten in many different ways – e.g. raw, dried, boiled etc. They could be consumed without any other ingredients, or as an element of more complicated dishes. Ancient and early Byzantine authors, who wrote their treatises between the 1st and 7th c. AD, and dealt with medicine (Dioscorides, Pliny the Elder, Galen, Oribasius, Aetius of Amida, Paul of Aegina, Athimus and others), described dietetic properties of a peach with details. Moreover, they left some information about a medical use of this fruit. This aspect of their works is an element of a wider and well-known phenomenon, i.e. an important role of all groups of aliments in the ancient art of healing.

The whole procedure resembles that of translating from Latin, rather than a translation from one modern language to another.

The ceremonies in honour of the dead – Parentalia, Lemuria, Larentalia, Compitalia, mundus patet – corresponded with the spiritual needs of the Romans. The purpose of the religious event recorded in the fasti usually resulted from its placing at a specific moment of the religious year, which was of great significance to the sacral community. A religious intuition in the Romans gave ground to the combination of official ceremonies in the honour of ancestors with important agricultural dates i.e. defined periods for the evaluation of time and space, which, often, accepted the form of apotropaic festivities with magical rituals. Often, the ceremonies of the turn of the year guaranteed human and animal fecundity as well as vegetative fertility.

This article provides an overview of the linguistic theory discussed by the sophists, and more specifically, indicates some of the central philosophical issues related to language usage raised by one of the greatest sophist – Gorgias. The purpose of this article is to analyse his discussions of language, rhetoric and poetry as they are presented in and exemplified by Encomium of Helen and the treatise On Nature or the Non-Existent. The present essay aims to examine the statement that has often been taken as characteristic of Gorgias’ thought: that language is not a reflection of things, but that it is its own master.

Opis:
In ancient Israel, there were no well-defined organizational structures, which were within the framework of the state. Despite this the different generations of Israel survived and communicated a sense of belonging to the people. Three important factors can be identified which gave rise to the awareness of the unity of all the people of Israel. The first of these was derived from a single ancestor, then - the belief in one God and cult YHWH with the annual great feast. In the process of social development of Israel this became a foundation for the creation of a single administrative body with strictly designated borders and a central authority to which everything was subordinated. The creation of royal institutions was important. On the other hand, in ancient Israel there were centrifugal tendencies which manifested themselves at the beginning of the creation of the kingdom. This was apparent not only in the strictly outlined territories of the various generations, but also by the leadership of older generations or the cities. The separatist tendency has come to fruition after the death of the third king of Israel Solomon (970-931 BC), when all of Israel split into two independent states.

Opis:
The Great Pyramid in Giza is the most researched and most recognisable object from the ancient world (Arnold 1991, Raynaud et al. 2008). Observations of its walls showed difference in colour of some limestone blocks used for building its core. Different colour of blocks results from the amount of fossil shells contained in the limestone. The large number of fossils not only gives the limestone its colour but is also responsible for its hardness. (Badawy 2005). Blocks made of this type of limestone form a triangle in all four walls of the pyramid. Precision of masonry and their fitting is better than that of blocks made of other kind of limestone. The triangles in the pyramid walls were made from a special type of limestone. The Giza plateau consists mainly of middle Eocene nummulite limestone which belongs to the Mokkatam formation. The limestone is partly overlain by late Eocene limestone of the Maadzi formation (Lehner 2004). The main purpose of this paper is to determine the mineralogical and petrographic composition of the blocks, which were used to build the Great Pyramid. Due to the insufficient amount of the veneer blocks, the study focuses on the stones which were used to build the core of the pyramid (Folk & Campbell 1992). According to the author, the better preserved blocks forming the triangles occupy the central parts of the pyramid walls. The best preserved blocks are observed in the first layer. They lay in the distance of 40 m from the corners of the pyramid and they were put in the central part of the pyramid’s foundation. In each subsequent layer their number is decreasing from the both sides. And thus, occurrence of this type of limestone ends up with the single block in the 19th layer, in the central part of each wall. These blocks are lighter and precisely fitted. They are arranged in a characteristic way and create a triangle-shaped feature. The same elements are visible in the next three walls of the Great Pyramid at Giza. The discovery of triangles in four walls of the Great Pyramid broadens our knowledge about its construction. The triangles have been unnoticed through the ages. After presenting the paper by the author, each person will be able to see the triangles without a problem, even on old photographs (Zalewski 2004, 2006). Concluding, the four triangles located at the base of the Great Pyramid at Giza are visible in the four walls of the pyramid. The best visible of them is the triangle located in the western wall, topped with a single stone. It is in the 19th layer of the stones, 16 m 65 cm high. According to the author’s calculations, the angle of all the above-mentioned triangles in its top amounts 155°. The length of its base is about 150 meters.

Następnie przedstawiono kolejno: miary długości i odległości, pola powierzchni, masy i objętości.
Ancient Egypt and its history and treasures had fascinated people of a long time. Until today the legend about them still stimulate the human imagination. This country was once one of the great powers of the ancient world. The remnants are still visible in ruins of monumental buildings, which in vain to look elsewhere in the world. The best example of this are of course pyramids in Giza, recognized even in ancient times as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Not less admiration is also temples of Karnak, Luxor, Deir el Bahari, or Abu Simbel. The necropolis in the Valley of the Kings is associated with by Howard Carter and the tomb of Tutankhamen and its treasures. Creating such a developed culture would not have been possible without the existence of the measurement system. Without them there would be not only the buildings, but also the power of ancient Egypt. In the article the author presents the current state of knowledge about the ancient Egyptian measurement system. In Egypt the measure standards were divided into official and commercial ones. The official standards were stored in the main temples of the city. Access was limited since they were the symbol of power and independence. The commercial standards made with cheaper and more versatile materials such as: wood, clay, rocks, or lead. They were stored in special structures on the ancient all key sightseeing places. The ancient Egyptian measurement system consisted of length and distance, area, weight, volume and the calendar and time measurement. Often, the units were different for different goods. That was the most common measurement of weight and volume. Most other measures were used for dry and for liquid. The greatest merit of the ancient Egyptians was the invention of the decimal system and the solar calendar. Over time, measure the weight began to have symbolic meaning thereby start money.

The author of the article attempts to confront reports concerning the history of Hannibal found in classical literature with selected painterly representations created in later times, i.e. between the late Middle Ages/early Renaissance and he end of the 20th century. This extensive issue, making up a part of a board range of problems classified as the reception of antiquity, requires making references to specific motifs from Hannibal’s history. The author of the text focuses on an analysis of six motifs: an oath sworn by Hannibal upon the Carthaginian gods in his childhood, the dramatic march across the Alps, the exposed motif of an elephant, the personal drama of the Carthaginian commander who finds the severed head of his younger brother, Hasdrubal, the dramatic battle of Zama and finally, the scene of Hannibal’s suicide. As a result of the analyses, the author concludes that painting was inspired by antiquity in a non-obvious manner, as it looked for moral examples based on faithfulness to a given word and religious oath. In those cases, Hannibal’s determination and indomitableness provided the chief inspiration.

Opis:
This article offers a formalization of how signs form words in Ancient Egyptian writing, for either hieroglyphic or hieratic texts. The formalization is in terms of a sequence of sign functions, which concurrently produce a sequence of signs and a sequence of phonemes. By involving a class of probabilistic automata, we can define the most likely sequence of sign functions that relates a given sequence of signs to a given sequence of phonemes. Experiments with two texts are discussed.

Opis:
Aurochs (Bos primigenius) was a unique species lasting through Pleistocene and Holocene for about two million years. The aurochs was one of the largest animals ever to inhabit Europe. The longest the species survived in the very Central Europe (presently Poland), where in spite of being taken under quite modern protection the last aged cow died in the year 1627. The most often brought up reason for dying out of the Aurochs is hunting and pouching. Another belief is, that growing agriculture pushed them away further from human sites. The study of the ancient DNA is quite a challenge. Although more and more research centers undertake the task, there is still little knowledge on this matter. First step of analysis is finding of certified aurochs bones or teeth and isolation of DNA. That was the most important step, followed by cloning of aurochs DNA in bacterial system for further analysis encompassing DNA sequencing and comparison with the existing bovine database in search for any similarities and specific genes. Some of the results have been already published. Studies of aurochs help also understanding history of species, its relation to other species and perhaps will help preventing extinction of other animals.

Opis:
The article contains a brief presentation of the development of monastic clothing forms in the eastern monasticism (IIIth-VIth centuries). The analysis is based on the early Christian literature which constitutes the basis for the recon-struction of the garment. It also indicates its origins . The form of the habit derives from widely used repertoire of secular clothing. The texts of first monastic rule of St. Pachomius and the ascetic writings included in the dissertation have been supplemented with iconographic material that illustrates the process of adaptation of secular forms of clothing to the requirements of monastic life as well as its transformation stages. The analysis embraces women’s and men’s clothing together with certain aspects of the symbolism of habit.

This article aims at examining the theme of divine wrath according to Egyptian religious beliefs, in connection with deities and worshippers. It is a matter of theological concern to examine the theme of divine wrath in various texts describing the rage of deities. The paper thoroughly discusses the theme of divine wrath, its addressees, effects, purposes, provocations, and the possibility of avoidance and pacification, as well as the linguistic expressions of wrath. It discusses the notion of wrath, its perceived consequences and infliction on the deities, living humans and the deceased. It also examines divine wrath in relation to the experience of suffering and affliction as well as that of protection and welfare. The analysis provides information on the core of the Egyptian religion investigated from the perspective of wrath.

Opis:
Nummularii, like the other groups of entrepreneurs in the ancient Rome, such as tra- pezitae, argentarii, mensarii, mensularii, coactores, coactores argentarii, stipulatores argentarii, collectarii, were engaged in the banking business. Among the wide range of services offered by the Roman bankers nummularii dealt initially only with the quality and exchange of coins. Therefore, by performing these operations they performed the role of official assay institutions. Their duties were initially primarily to examine coins and metal from which they were made, and setting the value of minted gold and silver co- ins. Nummularii have used empirical examining methods, based on the senses of sight, touch, hearing, and by comparing them to the patterns and samples. They also checked whether the coin was minted by the appropriate authority. There is no evidence that other bankers, in addition to nummularii, were involved in the control of the quality of the coin. Presumably, after some time they expanded their business in banking. In addi- tion to examining the quality of coins nummularii also engaged in their exchange. They conducted also deposit operations and that’s why they became competitors to argentarii on the market of banking services.

I show the main mechanisms that led to victory rational thinking over mythology and religion in ancient Greece. I carry out far reaching analogies between the situation in ancient Greece between the eighth and sixth centuries BC and the situation in the Western world within the last several dozen of years. I have noticed similarities in changes concerning mentality, rationality, and keeping a distance from religion.

Schwannomas are benign tumors derived from glial cells of peripheral nerve sheaths. They usually occur in association with Von Recklinghausen‘s disease and most commonly are observed on the head, neck, and upper extremities. Rare morphological variants may be misinterpreted as a malignancy under microscopic examination. The study presented a case of a sporadic “ancient” Schwannoma cell tumor located in the retroperitoneum. Literature data concerning diagnosis and treatment of the above-mentioned pathology was also reviewed.

Opis:
The present study discusses the role of salt-cured meat in dietetics, medicine and gastronomy demonstrated mainly in ancient and Byzantine medical (Galen, Oribasius, Aetius of Amida, Anthimus, Alexander of Tralles and Paul of Aegina) and agronomic (Cato, Varro, Columella, Palladius, Geoponica) sources written between 2nd and 10th century A.D. The part dealing with culinary application was also based on De re coquinaria. The article consists of three parts. In the first one, concerning ham, there are presented places in Europe and Asia Minor, were best cured meats were produced. Next, there in an outline of different methods of salting pork, dietetic properties of this kind of food, as well as, the way of using ham in medical treatment. There are also quotations of some recipes for ham that were presented in De re coquinaria. The second, sets forth the importance of bacon in ancient and Byzantine diet and medicine, especially among inhabitants of Gaul. The authors describe also the way it was utilized in by Byzantine physicians in fighting parasites. The last part is devoted to tuccetum – a meat dish, that was only mentioned in few Latin sources and has not yet been researched in detail. Moreover there is a presentation of different ideas for translations of this Latin term given by translators, linguists and historians.

Opis:
The Laws of Eshnunna, which can now be attributed with a large dose of certainty to Daduša, the king of this country, who reigned at the turn of the 19th and the 18th century BC, constitute the earliest collection of law written in Akkadian. They are not preserved on an original stele, like the Laws of Hammurabi, however, they are available in the form of copies on three clay tablets, which were unearthed in the 20th century AD, and they only contain a part of the original text. The preserved paragraphs mainly pertain to economic and family matters, and in this context they are similar, to a large extent, to the prescriptions of the Laws of Hammurabi. Therefore, it has been suggested sometimes that the two collections are related to each other as legal monuments. However, upon closer inspection of the language of the Laws of Eshnunna and of the Laws of Hammurabi, one can say that the former collection, written down barely a few decades earlier, did not influence the former to a significant extent or even at all. Similar cases and solutions in both collections may rather indicate that closely related customary law existed in both countries, Eshnunna and Babylonia.
