Opis:
Investigation on a designed and modified standard automatic transmission for a 2017 Yamaha Grizzly All-Terrain Vehicle was carried out to allow it to be controlled remotely and autonomously while maintaining its ability to be manually operated. The vehicle is a part of a project named AutoWeed. This project aims at developing a vehicle which can be used in the Australian outback to control and eradicate weeds. Preliminary tests were conducted on the vehicle to determine the performance parameters required to replace the movement supplied by the operator. Several devices used to achieve this motion were explored. It was concluded that the Motion Dynamics HB-DJ806 - LALI10010 electromechanical linear actuator be used as a proof of concept device for this application. This device is capable of exerting 200 N at 35 mm/seconds. It has a stroke length of 50 mm and was powered by a 12V DC motor, which drew 3 amps at maximum load. Through testing, it was found that the selected actuator did not have enough stroke length to cycle through the five gears on the ATV. This error was rectified allowing the system to function as intended. To achieve a reliable design, however, the Linak LA14 actuator was purchased as a final design as it was stronger, faster and had feedback capabilities. Before procurement, the new actuator was digitally modelled using SolidWorks 2017 and 3D printed to confirm the mounting position and method. An ANSYS FEA was conducted on all the custom-made components including the actuator bracket and mounting plate to ensure reliability. The bracket model was manufactured using 3D printing from ABS. It was recommended that for reliability, the bracket should be constructed from a stronger material such as aluminium. The results gained from testing proved that the autonomous transmission system implemented was reliable and repeatable. This was justified as the system achieved a 100% success rate when cycling through gears.

Opis:
Split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) is one of the most important and recognisable apparatus used for characterizing the dynamic behaviour of various materials. Incident pulse generated one the incident bar usually have a rectangular shape, which is proper for some materials but for others is not. Therefore, several methods of shaping the incident pulse are used for obtaining constant strain rate conditions during tests. Very often pulse shapers made of copper or similar material are implemented due to its softness properties. In this paper such material was investigated using the FE model of SHPB. Its mechanical behaviour was characterised with and without copper disc between the striker and incident bar. Numerical simulations were carried out using explicit LS-DYNA code. Two different methods were used for modelling the copper sample: typical finite Lagrangian elements and meshless Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. As a result of two techniques used axial stress-strain characteristics were compared for three different striker’s velocity with an influence of the copper pulse shaper taking into account. Finally, FE and SPH method was compared with taking into consideration: the efficiency, computer memory and power requirements, complexity of methods and time of simulation.

Opis:
Generally, wheelchair users cannot move easily within buildings since living areas in architectural structures are not suitable for them to maintain or to improve their physical capabilities. Because living area restrictions affect the physical performance of the users outside during the day, the reduced mobility causes several health problems. These problems become more intense by the time. Especially heart and lung related illnesses are common among the wheelchair users since the immobility decreases respiration capacity. The aim of this research is to design and prototype a wheelchair treadmill to help wheelchair users improve their upper extremity system. In this study, CAD was employed for the design of wheelchair treadmill. Then finite element analysis (FEA) was carried out for the parts of the wheelchair treadmill and the prototype was manufactured based on the results. The prototype was tested under the conditions the product was originally intended to function. In the experiments, the speeds of wheelchair and wheelchair treadmill were measured. The distances taken by users were also recorded, and the results were evaluated with respect to road surface conditions.

The aim of this paper was to investigate the temperature fields of the solid disc brake during short, emergency braking. The standard Galerkin weighted residual algorithm was used to discretize the parabolic heat transfer equation. The finite element simulation for two-dimensional model was performed due to the heat flux ratio constantly distributed in circumferential direction. Two types of disc brake assembly with appropriate boundary and initial conditions were developed. Results of calculations for the temperature expansion in axial and radial directions are presented. The effect of the angular velocity and the contact pressure evolution on temperature rise of disc brake was investigated. It was found that presented finite element technique for two-dimensional model with particular assumption in operation and boundary conditions validates with so far achievements in this field.

The dynamic bone remodeling process is a computationally challenging research area that struggles to understand the actual mechanisms. It has been observed that a mechanical stimulus in the bone greatly affects the remodeling process. A 3D finite element model of a femur is created and a probabilistic analysis is performed on the model. The probabilistic analysis measures the sensitivities of various parameters related to the material properties, geometric properties, and the three load cases defined as Single Leg Stance, Abduction, and Adduction. The sensitivity of each parameter is based on the calculated maximum mechanical stimulus and analyzed at various values of probabilities ranging from 0.001 to 0.999. The analysis showed that the parameters associated with the Single Leg Stance load case had the highest sensitivity with a probability of 0.99 and the angle of the force applied to the joint of the proximal femur had the overall highest sensitivity.

Opis:
Crack propagation under mixed-mode (I + II) conditions has been investigated in a semicircular disc where various levels of mixed-mode can be achieved by means of different geometry configurations. The research has been performed on a novel cementitious material, alkali-activated concrete. Its main advantage is that it is environment-friendly. On the other hand, its fracture mechanical properties, as of yet, have not been described sufficiently. Therefore, a fracture analysis has been performed. The crack deflection under three point bending conditions has been investigated numerically as well as experimentally. The numerical approach is based on a combination of the common finite element analysis and a multi-parameter form of the maximum tangential stress criterion. This generalized method is suitable especially for materials with specific (elasto-plastic, quasi-brittle etc.) fracture behaviour. The over-deterministic method together with the Williams expansion is applied to approximate selected stress tensor components around the crack tip. In this work, the influence of the eccentric crack is also discussed. In the conclusions, several recommendations about using single-parameter/multi-parameter fracture mechanics are stated.

Opis:
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the ultimate bearing capacity of the rectangular footing resting over layered sand using finite element method. Design/methodology/approach: Finite element analysis was used to investigate the dimensionless ultimate bearing capacity of the rectangular footing resting on a limited thickness of upper dense sand layer overlying limitless thickness of lower loose sand layer. The friction angle of the upper dense sand layer was varied from 41° to 46° whereas for the lower loose sand layer it was varied from 31° to 36°. Findings: The results reveal that the dimensionless ultimate bearing capacity was found to increase up to an H/W ratio of about 1.75 beyond which the increase was marginal. The results further reveal that the dimensionless ultimate bearing capacity was the maximum for the upper dense and lower loose sand friction angles of 46° and 36°, while it was the lowest for the upper dense and lower loose sands corresponding to the friction angle of 41° and 31°. For H/W = 0.5 and 2, the dimensionless bearing capacity decreases with the increase in the L/W ratio from 0.5 to 6 beyond which the dimensionless ultimate bearing capacity remains constant for all combinations of parameters. The results were presented in nondimensional manner and compared with the previous studies available in literature. Research limitations/implications: The analysis is performed using a ABAQUS 2017 software. The limitation of this study is that only finite element analysis is performed without conducting any experiments in the laboratory. Further the study is conducted only for the vertical loading. Practical implications: This proposed numerical study can be used to predict the ultimate bearing capacity of the rectangular footing resting on layered sand. Originality/value: The present study gives idea about the ultimate bearing capacity of rectangular footing when placed on layered sand (dense sand over loose sand) as well as the effect of thickness of top dense sand layer on the ultimate bearing capacity. The findings could be used to calculate the ultimate bearing capacity of the rectangular footing on layered sand.

Opis:
A multifunctional device to transfer graphical or text information for blind or visually impaired is presented. The prototype using tactile perception has been designed where information displayed on the screen of electronic device (mobile phone, PC) is transferred by oscillating needle, touching the fingertip. Having the aim to define optimal parameters of the fingertip excitation by needle, the computational analysis of different excitation modes has been carried out. A 3D solid computational finite element model of the skin segment, comprising four main fingertip skin layers (stratum corneum, epidermis, dermis and hypodermis) was built by using ANSYS Workbench FEA software. Harmonic analysis of its stress–strain state under excitation with different frequency (up to 10000 Hz) and harmonic force (0.01 N), acting outer stratum corneum layer in normal direction at one, two or three points has been performed. The influence of the mode of dynamic loading of skin was evaluated (in terms of the tactile signal level) on the basis of the normal and shear elastic strain in dermis, where mechanoreceptors are placed. It is shown that the tactile perception of information, delivered by three vibrating pins, may be influenced by configuration of excitation points (their number and phase of loading) and the frequency of excitation.

Opis:
The accuracy of an empirically derived density-modulus equation for bone depends upon the loading conditions and anatomic site of bone specimens used for experimentation. A recent study used FE modeling to compare the ability of three density-modulus relationships to predict strain during bending in neutral forearm rotation in the distal ulna; however, due to the inhomogeneous nature of these FE models, the performance of each equation is not necessarily consistent throughout forearm rotation. This issue is addressed in the present study, which compares the performance of these equations in pronation and supination. Strain gauge data were collected at six discreet locations of six ulna specimens loaded in bending at 40° of pronation and supination. Three FE models of each specimen were made, one for each density-modulus relation, and the strain output compared to the experimental data. The equation previously shown to be most accurate in predicting ulnar strain in neutral forearm rotation was also most accurate in pronation and supination. These results identify this one equation as the most appropriate for future FE analysis of the ulna (including adaptive remodeling, and further show that isotropic and inhomogeneous FE bone models may provide consistent results in different planes of bending.

The effects of the miniature channel-shaped scratches not detectable by the present inline electromagnetic defect detection system employed for wires’ surface defect detection on the fracture behaviour of the wires for civil engineering applications were investigated numerically. Finite element analysis revealed that both miniature channel-shaped across-the-thickness and across-the-width scratches change the fracture behaviour of the wires in terms of the fracture initiation locations and fracture process sequence. However, miniature across-the-thickness scratches does not affect the fracture shape of the wire while miniature across-the-width scratches changed the wires’ cup and cone fracture to a fracture shape with a predominantly flat fracture. These results provide an understanding of the fracture behaviour of wires with miniature scratches and serve as an alternative or a complimentary tools to experimental or fractographic failure analysis of wires with miniatures scratches which are difficult to carry out in the laboratory due to the sizes of the scratches.

A general numerical analysis theory capable of describing the behaviour of a non-uniform beam resting on variable one parameter (Winkler) foundation under a uniform partially distributed moving load is developed. The versatile numerical solution technique employed is based on the finite element and Newmark integration methods. The present study makes an effort to understand the damage of earthen dams under static and seismic loading condition. To make the investigation more realistic, behaviour of earthen dams considering the occurrence of a phreatic line indicating the submerged zone due to seepage within the dam body is considered. In case of earthen dams, homogeneous or nonhomogeneous, the consideration of the occurrence of a phreatic line or seepage line through the dam body is an important part of the earthen dam design methodology. The impervious material properties in the submerged zone below the phreatic line due to seepage may differ a lot in magnitudes as compared to the value of the same materials lying above this line. Hence, to have the exact stress distribution scenarios within the earthen dam, the different material properties above and below the phreatic line are considered in this present study. The study is first carried out by two-dimensional as well as three-dimensional finite element analysis under static loading condition. The work is further extended to observe the effect of seepage due to the consideration of the phreatic line on dynamic characteristics of earthen dams. Free vibration analysis and seismic analysis based on the Complete Quadratic Combination (CQC) method by considering twodimensional and three-dimensional modeling are carried out to present the frequencies, mode shapes and the stress distribution pattern of the earthen dam.

On the basis of the mathematical model of the continual description of functionalgradient metal systems, taking into account their structure, a computational computer scheme has been developed that makes it possible to assess the stress-strain state of local volumes of parts taking into account their spatial inhomogeneity. With the use of modern software components of computational mechanics – FEniCS finite element analysis package and its implementation in Python, the optimal structural characteristics of wheelsets of railway locomotive tires after plasma treatment have been established. It is shown that, depending on the value of the load, hardening of products must be carried out to a depth of 4.5 mm; with a further increase in thickness, the parameters of operational strength do not change.

Opis:
Mechanical vibrations are a common problem encountered in many machines, especially for vertical turbine pumps. These pumps are generally difficult to stiffen or damp, but the effective diagnosis must begin with an understanding of the underlying vibratory sources. In the present work, a deep well vertical turbine pump experienced extremely high vibrations for a long time although it still being new. It hasn't been in operation for over 6 months. The pump system suffers from extremely high vibration levels relative to the rotational speed (1X motor dominant frequency). An efficient strategy was implemented by using well-conceived techniques. The experimental modal analysis confirmed a presence of a natural frequency. Modifications were carried out to overcome resonance. Finite element analysis was done to determine the reed critical frequencies as a powerful tool to identify and mitigate vibration issues. On-site motor balancing was done to remove vibrations due to the residual imbalance. Results revealed decreasing vibration level by about 66% after solving all problems.

Opis:
Total ankle replacement (TAR) is a relatively new concept and is becoming more popular for treatment of ankle arthritis and fractures. Because of the high costs and difficulties of experimental studies, the developments of TAR prostheses are progressing very slowly. For this reason, the medical imaging techniques such as CT, and MR have become more and more useful. The finite element method (FEM) is a widely used technique to estimate the mechanical behaviors of materials and structures in engineering applications. FEM has also been increasingly applied to biomechanical analyses of human bones, tissues and organs, thanks to the development of both the computing capabilities and the medical imaging techniques. 3-D finite element models of the human foot and ankle from reconstruction of MR and CT images have been investigated by some authors. In this study, data of geometries (used in modeling) of a normal and a prosthetic foot and ankle were obtained from a 3D reconstruction of CT images. The segmentation software, MIMICS was used to generate the 3D images of the bony structures, soft tissues and components of prosthesis of normal and prosthetic ankle-foot complex. Except the spaces between the adjacent surface of the phalanges fused, metatarsals, cuneiforms, cuboid, navicular, talus and calcaneus bones, soft tissues and components of prosthesis were independently developed to form foot and ankle complex. SOLIDWORKS program was used to form the boundary surfaces of all model components and then the solid models were obtained from these boundary surfaces. Finite element analyses software, ABAQUS was used to perform the numerical stress analyses of these models for balanced standing position. Plantar pressure and von Mises stress distributions of the normal and prosthetic ankles were compared with each other. There was a peak pressure increase at the 4th metatarsal, first metatarsal and talus bones and a decrease at the intermediate cuneiform and calcaneus bones, in prosthetic ankle-foot complex compared to normal one. The predicted plantar pressures and von Misses stress distributions for a normal foot were consistent with other FE models given in the literature. The present study is aimed to open new approaches for the development of ankle prosthesis.

The effective thermal conductivity and air permeability of a multifilament polyester yarn used in sports T-shirts was investigated by computer modeling using finite element analysis (COMSOL Multiphysics, ABAQUS/CAE). It has been shown that the number of fibers, the porosity of the yarn and the proportion of fibers in the volume fraction of the yarn have a direct effect on the effective thermal conductivity and air permeability of the multifilament yarn. It was found that with the increase in the number of fibers, the porosity of the yarn decreases linearly, while the volume fraction of the fibers increases, and thus the effective thermal conductivity increases. In addition, air permeability decreases exponentially.
Zbadano efektywne przewodzenie ciepła i przepuszczalność powietrza wielowłókienkowej przędzy poliestrowej stosowanej w koszulce sportowej poprzez modelowanie obliczeniowe z użyciem analizy elementów skończonych (COMSOL Multiphysics, ABAQUS/CAE).

Opis:
Purpose: Modelling of biomechanical behaviour of heart valve materials aids improvement of biofunctional feature. The aim of the work was assessment of influence of material thickness of leaflets of artificial aortic valve on displacements and stresses during opening phase using finite element analysis (FEA). Design/methodology/approach: The model of aortic valve was developed on the basis of average anatomical valve shapes and dimensions. Nonlinear dynamic large displacements analysis with assumption of isotropic linear elastic material behaviour was used in simulation (Solidworks). The modulus of elasticity of 5.0 MPa was assumed and Poisson ratio set to 0.45. The rigidly supported leaflets was loaded by pressure increasing in the range 0-55 mmHg in time 0.1 s. Leaflets with material thickness 0.13 and 0.15 and 0.17 mm were analysed. The thickness was simulated with shell finite elements. Findings: The highest stresses were observed in the areas of fixation of the leaflets near the scaffold and were lower than dangerous value of fatigue of polyurethanes. Increasing the thickness of valve leaflet material in the range of 40 micrometres resulted in reduction of the valve outlet by almost 10 percent. Research limitations/implications: The FEA was limited to the isotropic linear-elastic behaviour of the material albeit can be used to assess leaflet deformation during dynamic load. Practical implications: Leaflets design may be start from efficient FEA which helps estimation of material impact on stress and fold formation which can affect local blood flow. Originality/value: Aortic heart valve leaflet material can be initially tested in dynamic conditions during opening phase with using FEA.

Opis:
Titanium alloys are difficult-to-machine materials due to their complex mechanical and thermophysical properties. An essential factor in ensuring the quality of the machined surface is the analysis and recommendation of vibration processes accompanying cutting. The analytical description of these processes for machining titanium alloys is very complicated due to the complex adiabatic shear phenomena and the specific thermodynamic state of the chip-forming zone. Simulation modeling chip formation rheology in Computer-Aided Forming systems is a practical method for studying these phenomena. However, dynamic research of the cutting process using such techniques is limited because the initial state of the workpiece and tool is a priori assumed to be "rigid", and the damping properties of the fixture and machine elements are not taken into account at all. Therefore, combining the results of analytical modeling of the cutting process dynamics with the results of simulation modeling was the basis for the proposed research methodology. Such symbiosis of different techniques will consider both mechanical and thermodynamic aspects of machining (specific dynamics of cutting forces) and actual conditions of stiffness and damping properties of the “Machine-Fixture-Tool-Workpiece” system.

A large strain, large displacement finite element model that allows element separation and failure is constructed and validated based on existing results of reinforced concrete columns subjected to blast loads. In this approach, concrete is represented with the Johnson-Holmquist-Cook model while a plastic-kinematic relationship describes steel behavior. The model is used to predict the capacity of typical reinforced concrete bridge columns to resist an assumed blast load scenario, where changes in concrete strength, steel reinforcement ratio, and axial force on the column are considered. The effectiveness of a method of column protection is investigated, where existing columns are wrapped with a relatively inexpensive steel fiber reinforced polymer (SFRP) jacket. It was found that the use of SFRP can significantly enhance the resistance of the columns.

Anisotropic rotor configurations influenced by the presence of a large number of geometrical parameters in a permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance (PMASR) motor pose design challenges in obtaining a robust geometry satisfying the requirements of reduced torque ripple and high torque density. Therefore, the purpose of this work is to perform detailed geometrical sensitivity analysis of a 36 slot/4 pole permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance (PMASR) motor using h-indexing and level sensitivity analysis in order to specify a guideline for designers to prioritize the design variables for optimization. Systematic multi-level design optimization for multiple objectives is implemented by an NSGA-II algorithm aided by the finite element analysis tool, hardware prototyping and experimental validation. The optimized designs also exhibit better structural and thermal characteristics.

The main objective of the study is to develop experimentally validated FE model and perform numerical analysis of layered composites made by hand lay-up techniques during tension and bending test. The research object is glass - polyester laminate made of four unidirectional layers. In order to validate the numerical models experimental test were performed. Due to the very different stiffness modulus in tension and bending loading the material properties obtained from standard test are not suitable to apply in numerical model. Significantly different behaviour compared to experimental test was obtained for tree point bending where the numerical model becomes too stiff. Simple coupons, relatively easy to manufacture presented in the paper have very low quality. The differences in actual and theoretical bending stiffness (obtained from tension stiffness) exceed 70%. In order to represent the actual structure the layers of the composite were divided by resin layers and also additional resin layer at the top and bottom of the model were defined. Single stage optimization process was used to adjust the material layout. After layer set-up modification very significant improvement can be seen for flexural behaviour.

Opis:
The paper presents an analysis of the influence of a number of technological aspects of both the socket and the pin on the value of the force required for joint disconnection. A number of numerical simulations were made in Abaqus program to examine effects of such parameters as: presence of an interference fit, use of spherical latches, application of different rigidity of the pin by making cuts with variable width and length, use of different angles of inclination of the working part of the connection. Models of different simple joints presented in this work, can also operate in large structures forming panels of aircraft structures. For this purpose one of the analyzed geometry of the connection was applied to create a 3-D panel model of the structural element in CAD - SolidWorks program. All analysed models with different geometries were subjected to simulation of opening process. The corresponding critical forces were estimated for the beginning of the failure process. The detailed discussion of all model parameters was included to specify their influence on the whole disconnection of joints. It should be noted that aerospace structures work under complex loading states and further numerical studies are required to extend the presented results.
W pracy przedstawiono analizę wpływu kilku zagadnień technologii wykonania zarówno gniazda jak i trzpienia na wartość siły potrzebnej do rozłączenia połączenia. Przeprowadzono szereg symulacji numerycznych w programie Abaqus, badając wpływ takich parametrów jak: występowanie wcisku, użycie sferycznych zatrzasków, zastosowanie różnych sztywności w trzpieniu poprzez wykonanie rozcięć o zmiennej szerokości i długości, zastosowanie różnych kątów pochylenia części roboczej gniazda.

The finite element analysis method (FEM), for its advantages of lower time and economic costing in predicting the mechanical properties of fabrics, was applied to warp-knitted fabrics. In this paper, two bar warp-knitted fabric knitted with wires was used as reflecting mesh antennas. Firstly the loop unit of the metallic warp-knitted fabric was simulated in 3-D by TexGen software. Secondly the 3-D loop unit model was inputted into ABAQUS software to form a model of the metallic warp-knitted fabric sheet for uni-axial tension analysis. Thirdly numerical results were obtained after setting the parameters in ABAQUS. Finally numerical results were verified by uni-axial tensile experiments on the metallic warp-knitted fabric. The results showed that the simulation was in good agreement with the experimental tensile process, where the transfer of yarns between loops when in low fabric elongation and in yarn elongation when in high fabric elongation were simulated by FEM of warp-knitted fabric in the tensile process. Also the same trend of tensile force was found in experiment and FEM results. Therefore it can be concluded that FEM can be used to predict the mechanical properties of warp-knitted fabric with a complex structure.

The present paper deals with the experimental studies carried out on free vibration of isotropic and laminated composite skew plates. The natural frequencies were also determined using QUAD8 finite element of MSC/NASTRAN and a comparison was made between the experimental values and the finite element solution. The effects of the skew angle and aspect ratio on the natural frequencies of isotropic skew plates were studied. The effects of the skew angle, aspect ratio, fiber orientation angle and laminate sequence (keeping the number of layers constant) on the natural frequencies of antisymmetric composite laminates were also studied. The experimental values of natural frequencies are in good agreement with the FE solutions. The natural frequencies are found to increase with an increase in the skew angle. The variation of natural frequencies with the aspect ratio is small and negligible both for isotropic and laminated composite skew plates.

This paper concerns numerical analysis of thermal phenomena accompanying laser beam and laser-arc hybrid welding processes. Temperature field was obtained on the basis of the solution into energy conservation equation with Fourier law using finite element method. ABAQUS/Standard solver was used for calculations. Electric arc and laser beam heat sources were described respectively by “double ellipsoidal” heat source and Gaussian distribution with assumption of linear decrease of heat source power intensity with material penetration deep. Heat source movement along welded plate was obtained using DFLUX subroutine. Thermo-physical parameters dependant on temperature as well as latent heat of fusion were taken into account in FE analysis. The results of calculations include temperature field in rectangular elements butt welded by a single laser beam and hybrid laser-arc technique.
Praca dotyczy analizy numerycznej zjawisk cieplnych towarzyszących procesom spawania wiązką laserową oraz spawania hybrydowego laser-łuk elektryczny. Rozkłady temperatury otrzymano z numerycznego rozwiązania równania zachowania energii z prawem Fouriera metodą elementów skończonych. Do obliczeń wykorzystano moduł obliczeniowy ABAQUS/Standard. Do opisu rozkładu mocy łuku elektrycznego wykorzystano model „podwójnie elipsoidalny”, natomiast rozkład mocy wiązki laserowej opisano modelem gaussowskim z uwzględnieniem liniowego spadku intensywności mocy źródła z głębokością penetracji materiału. Symulację ruchu źródła spawającego uzyskano dzięki zastosowaniu procedury DFLUX. W analizie uwzględniono zmienne z temperaturą własności termofizyczne a także ciepło krzepnięcia w obszarze dwufazowym. Wyniki obliczeń numerycznych obejmują rozkłady temperatury w elementach prostopadłościennych spawanych doczołowo wiązką laserową i techniką hybrydową laser-łuk elektryczny.

One of the possible solutions could be replacing the titanium alloys with ultrafine-grained commercially pure titanium (cpTi). The yield and also the ultimate strength of cpTi can exceed 1000 MPa. One of the most promising methods in manufacturing medical implants with improved biological fixation is laser cladding in which bioactive glass coatings are imposed on metallic substrates. The aim of this work is development of a 3D numerical model of the above mentioned additive manufacturing process. The obtained model is able to predict the stress-strain and temperature distributions during the processing. A sequentially coupled finite element (FE) model of laser cladding has been developed by applying element birth and death technique to calculate the transient temperature fields used in the stress analysis. The concentrated volumetric heat source from the laser beam moving along the metal surface has been represented by the Gaussian distribution in the radial and exponential decay in the depth direction. The developed FE based numerical model is capable to support the optimal design of such advanced multi-layered structural materials using the laser cladding technique.

Opis:
In this paper, the authors show the results of numerical simulations representing the test of an aluminum sandwich panel with an auxetic anti-tetrachiral core on an exciter. Steady-state vibration analyses utilizing modal superposition (linear dynamics) were performed. The bottom of the panel had all the degrees of freedom constrained and excitation in form of base acceleration in the vertical direction was applied. The obtained results were in form of contour plots of selected output variables in the frequency domain. In addition, curves showing the variation of acceleration, velocity and displacement of a selected representative point in frequency were generated. The results were compared with those obtained for the panel with a non-auxetic core, in the form of a standard hexagonal honeycomb. It was found that the auxetic panel is not superior in the whole range of frequencies but a workflow useful in the design of sandwich panels for operating conditions involving vibrations was developed.

In this paper we propose an original configuration of a compliant mini-gripper for handling chemicals. The compliant mini-gripper is 3D modeled and analyzed with finite element method. To use it in a wider range of containers designed for laboratories we made several variants of fasteners. In order to obtain a functional prototype in a scale appropriate to characterize the system, we determined the material properties of the gripper and developed an experimental stand for characterizing the system with mini-gripper. Finally, we compared the movements of the experimental grip, made according to the movement of the bellows type actuator, determined based on, analytical and numerical results.

Opis:
The need to reduce pollutant emissions leads the engineers to design new aeronautic combustors characterized by lean burn at relatively low temperatures. This requirement can easily cause flame instability phenomena and consequent pressure pulsations which may seriously damage combustor’s structure and/or compromise its fatigue life. Hence the need to study the combustor’s structural dynamics and the interaction between elastic, thermal and acoustic phenomena. Finite element method represent a largely used and fairly reliable tool to address these studies; on the other hand, the idealization process may bring to results quite far from the reality whereas too simplifying assumptions are made. Constraints modelling represent a key-issue for all dynamic FE analyses; a wrong simulation of the constraints may indeed compromise entire analyses although running on very accurate and mesh-refined structural models. In this paper, a probabilistic approach to characterize the influence of external constraints on the modal behaviour of an aircraft combustor-rig is presented. The finite element model validation was performed at first by comparing numerical and experimental results for the free-free condition (no constraints). Once the model was validated, the effect of constraints elasticity on natural frequencies was investigated by means of a probabilistic design simulation (PDS); referring to a specific tool developed in the ANSYS®software, a preliminary statistical analysis was at performed via Monte-Carlo Simulation (MCS) method. The results were then correlated with the experimental ones via Response Surface Method (RSM).
W artykule zaprezentowano podejście probabilistyczne by scharakteryzować wpływ więzów zewnętrznych na właściwości modalne zespołu samolotowej komory spalania. Najpierw przeprowadzono walidację modelu elementów skończonych drogą porównania wyników doświadczalnych i obliczeniowych w warunkach swobodnych (bez więzów). Gdy potwierdzono prawidłowość modelu, zbadano wpływ sprężystości więzów na częstotliwości drgań własnych stosując metodę probabilistycznego projektowania symulacji (PDS). Korzystając ze specjalnego narzędzia opracowanego w oprogramowaniu ANSYS, wykonano wstępną analizę statystyczną metodą symulacji Monte Carlo (MCS). Jej wyniki skorelowano następnie z wynikami doświadczalnymi stosując metodę powierzchni odpowiedzi (RSM).

Purpose: The aim of the study was to determine forces which are transferred to supporting teeth during the treatment with the midpalatal device with Hyrax screw and to evaluate orthodontic and orthopaedic effects based on displacement analysis. Design/methodology/approach: The finite element method (FEM) was used to simulation the midpalatal expansion forces activated by the screw pre-loaded during a turn of 180° which corresponds to daily recommended value. Distribution of expansion forces of Hyrax device was calculated as reaction forces on elastic supports with stiffness corresponding to the teeth working on periodontal ligament in alveolar bone. Findings: On the basis of the displacement analysis was observed the movement of supporting teeth by a value higher than 0.1 mm which corresponds to the recommended daily value. The midpalatal suture splitting forces were determined on the first premolars with a value of 32.8 N and on the first premolars of 44.2 N. Research limitations/implications: The studies did not take into account the shape of palate other craniofacial bones and their stiffness. Practical implications: Adjusting the stiffness of the device to degree of ossification midpalatal suture and teeth mobility. Searching for new solutions which eliminate the negative phenomenon of tilting teeth during the expansion of maxilla and recommending a surgically assisted techniques. Originality/value: The simulation confirmed that treatment with Hyrax screw gives a uniform expansion with values of forces corresponded to stiffness of premolar and molar teeth. The studies have indicated a possibility of tendency to tilting the supporting teeth what is a negative phenomenon.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to present the computationally timeconsuming task of simulating the process of randomly oscillating thin-shell structures to realize an optimal design with limitations in terms of fatigue damage. The most important aim here is to design an effective optimization algorithm and choose an appropriate approach for the evaluation of multiaxial fatigue damage in the context of the random and non-proportional character of stress in the structure when considering the standard finite element model. The authors propose their own optimization algorithm, which is described in the present study and, on the basis of tests, has proven to be suitable for the aforementioned technical problems. The proposition of algorithms for calculating the accumulation of fatigue damage in non-proportional and multiaxial stresses (especially in terms of the application of rainflow analysis by decomposition of the equivalent stress, as determined by the appropriate “fatigue” criterion) is very important in such computational processes. The entire computational process was implemented in MATLAB with the “Discret_Opt_Fat” main control program. The article presents the theoretical basis for the presented complex problem solution, its algorithmization and the technical application.

This paper studies the free vibration characteristics of rectangular plates with partially clamped edges around the corners using the finite element method. ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL) was utilized to produce the finite element (FE) models and to run the analysis. The FE models were used to obtain the plate first natural frequency and mode shape. A comprehensive investigation of the effect of the plate geometric parameters and different boundary condition properties on the natural frequency and mode shapes is presented. The results showed that the vibration characteristics of the structure are greatly dependent on the plate size and the constraint properties.

Opis:
Purpose: The present work aims to investigate the effect of many infill patterns (rectilinear, line, grid, triangles, cubic, concentric, honeycomb, 3D honeycomb) and the infill density on the mechanical tensile strength of an Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) test specimen manufactured numerically by FDM. Design/methodology/approach: Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software has been used to model the geometry and the mesostructure of the test specimens in a fully automatic manner from a G-code file by using a script. Then, a Numerical Design of Experiments (NDoE) has been carried out by using Taguchi method and the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The tensile behaviour of these numerical test specimens has been studied by the Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Findings: The FEA results showed that a maximal Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) was reached by using the ‘concentric’ infill pattern combined with an infill density of 30%. The results also show that the infill pattern and the infill density are significant factors. Research limitations/implications: The low infill densities of 20% and 30% that have already been used in many previous studies, we have also applied it in order to reduce the time of the simulations. Indeed, with high infill density, the simulations take a very excessive time. In an ongoing study, we predicted higher percentages. Practical implications: This study provided an important modelling tool for the design and manufacture of functional parts and helps the FDM practitioners and engineers to manufacture strong and lightweight FDM parts by choosing the optimal process parameters. Originality/value: This study elucidated the effect of various infill patterns on the tensile properties of the test specimens and applied for the first time a NDoE using numerical test specimens created by the mesostructured approach, which considerably minimized the cost of the experiments while obtaining an error of 6.8% between the numerical and the experimental values of the UTS.

Opis:
An ancient forging device in Spain has been studied, namely the forge with a waterwheel and air-blowing tube or hydraulic trompe, found near the village of Santa Eulalia de Oscos (province of Asturias, Spain). Three procedures using ad hoc methods were applied: 3D modelling, finite element analysis (FEA), and computational-fluid dynamics (CFD). The CFD results indicated the proper functioning of the trompe, which is a peculiar device based on the Venturi effect to take in air. The maximum air volume flow rate supplied to the forge by the trompe was shown to be 0.091 m3/s, and certain parameters of relevance in the trompe design presented optimal values, i.e. offering maximum air-flow supply. Furthermore, the distribution of stress over the motion-transmission system revealed that the stress was concentrated most intensely in the cogs of the transmission shaft (a kind of camshaft), registering values of up to 7.50 MPa, although this value remained below half of the maximum admissible work stress. Therefore, it was confirmed that the oak wood from which the motion system and the trompe were made functioned properly, as these systems never exceeded the maximum admissible working stress, demonstrating the effectiveness of the materials used in that period.

The present study focuses on the numerical simulation and experimental validation of a Solar Greenhouse Dryer (SGHD). The Solar Dryers are the devices which uses solar energy to dry substances, especially crops with high moisture content, and the word Greenhouse means protection of crops from excess hot or cold climatic conditions and unwanted pests. Thus, Solar Greenhouse Dryer is a device which utilizes solar energy for drying of crops with high moisture content and prevents it from excess climatic conditions and provides optimum range of temperature and prevents the dried product from pests and dust while drying. The numerical simulation of SGHD was performed using Finite Element Analysis software ANSYS 2020 R2. Initially three different roof shapes were modelled using software CATIA V5 R3 namely triangular, trapezoidal and dome shape. The modelled SGHDs was then introduced to ANSYS domain for numerical analysis. The models were initially meshed in ANSYS workbench with unstructured tetrahedral structure of mesh over all the domains. The Solar Ray tracing content was used for numerical simulation of dryers, the solar ray tracing is used to predict direct illumination energy source produced by sun at experimental site. The experiment for no-load test was conducted at Bahe Borgaon, Dist- Sangli, Maharashtra, India at 17.115°N and 74.33°E.

Opis:
Functionally Graded Materials (FGM) are extensively employed for hip plant component material due to their certain properties in a specific design to achieve the requirements of the hip-joint system. Nevertheless, if there are similar properties, it doesn’t necessarily indicate that the knee plant is efficiently and effectively working. Therefore, it is important to develop an ideal design of functionally graded material femoral components that can be used for a long period. A new ideal design of femoral prosthesis can be introduced using functionally graded fiber polymer (FGFP) which will reduce the stress shielding and the corresponding stresses present over the interface. Herein, modal analysis of the complete hip plant part is carried out, which is the main factor and to date, very few research studies have been found on it. Moreover, this enhances the life of hip replacement, and the modal, harmonic, and fatigue analysis determines the pre-loading failure phenomena due to the vibrational response of the hip. This study deals with the cementless hip plant applying the finite element analysis (FEA) model in which geometry is studied, and the femoral bone model is based in a 3D scan.

Opis:
Purpose: Defect of the interproximal wall of the tooth is filled with use the shaped matrix and wedge which seals bottom margin during filling. Better fit of the wedge and equalization of the pressure forces on the matrix is achieved by the compliance of the wedge structure through cuts and perforations and the use of silicone materials and unidirectionally expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE). The work presents a methodology for model studies of the mechanics of dental wedges in order to evaluate and compare the impact of wedge materials on functional features. The hypothesis of the work was that the mechanical properties of ePTFE determine the effectiveness of the dental wedge. Design/methodology/approach: Effect of modulus of elasticity and friction coefficient of wedge and matrix materials on the functional features of the wedge was studied on the way Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Simulation included contact sliding between wedge and matrix what was simulated in nonlinear large displacements regime. The sealing evaluation criterion was the pressure distribution between the wedge and matrix below the lower edge of the defect. Displacement values were the criterion for the loss of convexity as a result of matrix deformation. Findings: The material for the wedge should be characterized by a low coefficient of friction, low elasticity (ensuring high compliance of the wedge) and at the same time the ability to large permanent deformations, which allows for plastic shaping of the matrix from the side of the defect in order to achieve the required wall convexity and the tangent point. Research limitations/implications: Results show tendency of phenomena in limitation to model simplification of the interdental gap and the ideal adhesion of the matrix to the tooth and linear elasticity of materials. Practical implications: The material that best meets the requirements is unidirectionally expanded polytetrafluoroethylene, which has one of the lowest coefficients of friction and very high plasticity necessary to shape the matrix from the inside of the cavity. Originality/value: Methodology of model study and criteria of functional characteristics of dental wedge was presented.

This work presents some aspects related to the designing of a roller for stands that are intended to determine the parameters of the transmission of a vehicle, such as braking force, wheel revolutions, etc. The computational scheme of simply supported beam is used to create an analytical mechanical-mathematical model through which a multicriteria optimization problem has been solved. A finite element macro and submodel of the roller has been created, and by using the R1MS technique, the fatigue strength in the welding seams in the roller has also been determined. A parametric analysis is accomplished to determine the influence of the thickness of the base steel and the covering ebonite layer on the perimeter change of the outer surface, taking into account the physical non-linearity of the outer layer.

Opis:
This paper presents the numerical part of the research program on concrete-filled steel columns. Nonlinear, three dimensional FE analysis of axial compression, was conducted using the finite element program ABAQUS. The numerical results were validated through comparison with experimental data in terms of ultimate loading and deformation modes. Modeling related problems such as the definition of boundary conditions, imperfections, concrete-steel interaction, material representation and others are investigated using a comprehensive parametric study. The developed FE models will be used for an enhanced interpretation of experiments and for the predictive study of cases not included in the experimental testing.
W artykule przedstawiono numeryczną część programu badań słupów stalowych wypełnionych betonem. Przeprowadzono nieliniową, trójwymiarową analizę FE ściskania osiowego, za pomocą programu ABAQUS. Numeryczne wyniki zostały zwalidowane przez porównanie z danymi doświadczalnymi w zakresie obciążenia granicznego i typu odkształcenia. Za pomocą kompleksowych studiów parametrycznych badano zagadnienia związane z modelowaniem takich parametrów jak określenie warunków brzegowych, imperfekcji, interakcji miedzy betonem a stalą, odwzorowaniem materiałów. Opracowane modele FE zostaną wykorzystane do udoskonalenia interpretacji eksperymentów i przewidywania wyników dla przypadków niebadanych doświadczalnie.

Opis:
Several months after August 4, 2020, Lebanon is still recovering from the enormous explosion at the port of Beirut that killed more than 200 people and injured more than 7500. This explosion ripped the city to shreds and significantly damaged the Beirut port silos. Saint Joseph University of Beirut “the school of engineering ESIB” in collaboration with “Amann” Engineering performed a 3D scan of the Beirut port silos to assess the silos’ level of damage. The obtained data was then compared to the numerical modelling results, obtained from Abaqus explicit, in order to estimate the blast magnitude and to check if the pile foundation can be reused in building new silos at the same place due to the limited space available at the port of Beirut while considering the soil-foundation-structure interaction effect. In addition, the silos’ structural response against the filling of the silos at the time of explosion was investigated. The displacement of the silos and the amount of silos’ damage obtained from the fixed and flexible numerical models indicate that a blast magnitude of 0.44 kt TNT (approximately 1100 tons of Ammonium Nitrate) best estimates the 20 to 30 cm silos’ tilting in the direction of the blast. In addition, the soil and the foundation played a positive role by absorbing part while dissipating less amount of the blast energy. Also, the grains at the time of the event did not affect the silos’ deformation and damage amount. Noting that the displacement of the pile foundation exceeded all limits set by design codes, indicating that the pile foundation cannot be reused to build new silos at the same place.

Opis:
Conceptual development and testing of models and prototypes of manipulators, supporting the work of industrial robots, has become a specialty of the Department of Welding Engineering of the Warsaw University of Technology and ZAP Robotyka from Ostrow Wielkopolski. However, they are not typical devices, so their development requires a detailed analysis of many aspects, both functional and economic. Also the pre-implementation tests are not included in dedicated standards and must be based on previously developed experimental procedures. This article presents selected problems in the design and research of new types of manipulators, created as a result of joint research and development work.

Opis:
The following work gives the details of the modelling, simulation, and testing of a small portable gravitational water vortex (GWV) based power plant. The gravitation water vortex is an ideal source of renewable energy for rural areas that have a small body of flowing water. For this purpose, we have selected a small size for the vortex chamber that enables it to form a vortex with limited amounts of water. The paper gives the details of the simulation of the GWV in COMSOL FEA software and the parameters that were chosen for optimization. These parameters were the height of the vortex chamber, the number of blades, the length of the blades, and the tilt angle of the blades. These parameters were systematically varied step by step, to observe their effect on the speed of the rotor. The results of the parametric sweep that was performed on all the parameters are also presented. Based on the simulation results an optimal set of parameters was chosen for the physical implementation of the GWV. The paper also goes into the details of the construction of the physical GWV, the experimental setup that was devised for the testing and verification of the simulation results.

Opis:
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze three patterns of mandible angle fracture treatment by means of the finite element analysis. Methods: Investigation has been based on the mandible geometry reconstructed with use of hospitalized patient CT data. The KLS Martin mini-plates with corresponding screws were used to establish proper fracture stabilization. Models were run assuming isotropic and elasto-plastic material properties of connecting devices and cortical bone. The main masticatory muscles and artificial temporomandibular joint have been incorporated to assure mandible physiological movement. The gage loading has been applied in three different locations to cover wider range of possible mastication loading cases during daily routine. A different contact conditions have been applied to the fracture plane to simulate both load bearing and sharing behaviors. Prepared FEM models reflect the most frequently used surgery’s approaches to mandible angle fracture treatment. A specific nomenclature has been introduced to describe particular model. The tension plate, with one connecting mini-plate, two-point fixation and combined fixation, both using two mini-plates respectively. Results: Performed analysis allowed for a detailed estimation of the mini-plate connection response under the applied gauge loading. The equivalent stress within the mini-plates and surrounding cortical bone have been compared between all models. Regarding the fracture plane, the contact status and pressure have been considered. Conclusions: The combined fixation model, acting as a biplanar fastener system, presents the highest flexibility and connection efficiency.
