    The thickness of a graph is the minimum number of planar spanning subgraphs into which the graph can be decomposed. It is a measurement of the closeness to the planarity of a graph, and it also has important applications to VLSI design, but it has been known for only few graphs. We obtain the thickness of vertex-amalgamation and bar-amalgamation of graphs, the lower and upper bounds for the thickness of edge-amalgamation and 2-vertex-amalgamation of graphs, respectively. We also study the thickness of Cartesian product of graphs, and by using operations on graphs, we derive the thickness of the Cartesian product Kn □ Pm for most values of m and n.

    In this paper we introduce the modelwise interpolation property of a logic that states that whenever \(\models\phi\to\psi\) holds for two formulas \(\phi\) and \(\psi\), then for every model \(\mathfrak{M}\) there is an interpolant formula \(\chi\) formulated in the intersection of the vocabularies of \(\phi\) and \(\psi\), such that \(\mathfrak{M}\models\phi\to\chi\) and \(\mathfrak{M}\models\chi\to\psi\), that is, the interpolant formula in Craig interpolation may vary from model to model. We compare the modelwise interpolation property with the standard Craig interpolation and with the local interpolation property by discussing examples, most notably the finite variable fragments of first order logic, and difference logic. As an application we connect the modelwise interpolation property with the local Beth definability, and we prove that the modelwise interpolation property of an algebraizable logic can be characterized by a weak form of the superamalgamation property of the class of algebras corresponding to the models of the logic.

    The efficiency-driven trend towards amalgamation characterising local government reforms in Europe seems to have escaped Romania, which displays a significant increase in the number of local governments post- 1989. This is the result of rural first-tier local governments splitting into smaller units. The paper examines objective factors and subjective motivations that have shaped the behaviour of both national and local actors in dealing with territorial reform. First, it explores the rationale and rationality of a central government initiative to facilitate municipal splits against a set of criteria derived from the literature. Second, it examines the municipal splits occurring between 1991 and 2018 against alternative or concurring explanations developed in the literature based on economic, socio-cultural and political elements. The paper argues that in the highly charged political context of the post-communist countries it is reasonable to expect a dominance of subjective rather than objective factors in decision-making on territorial reform.

    Let G = (V,E) be a connected simple graph of order p and size q. A graph G is called local antimagic (total) if G admits a local antimagic (total) labeling. A bijection g : E → {1, 2, . . . , q} is called a local antimagic labeling of G if for any two adjacent vertices u and v, we have $ g^+ (u) \ne g^+ (v) $, where $ g^+ (u) = \Sigma_{e∈E(u)} \text{ } g(e) $, and E(u) is the set of edges incident to u. Similarly, a bijection f : V (G)∪E(G) → {1, 2, . . . , p+q} is called a local antimagic total labeling of G if for any two adjacent vertices u and v, we have $ w_f (u) \ne w_f (v) $, where $ w_f (u) = f(u) + \Sigma_{e∈E(u)} f(e) $. Thus, any local antimagic (total) labeling induces a proper vertex coloring of G if vertex v is assigned the color $g^+ (v) $ (respectively, $ w_f (u) $). The local antimagic (total) chromatic number, denoted $χ_\text{la } (G) $ (respectively $χ_\text{lat } (G) $ ), is the minimum number of induced colors taken over local antimagic (total) labeling of G. In this paper, we determined $ χ_\text{lat } (G) $ where G is the amalgamation of complete graphs. Consequently, we also obtained the local antimagic (total) chromatic number of the disjoint union of complete graphs, and the join of $ K_1 $ and amalgamation of complete graphs under various conditions. An application of local antimagic total chromatic number is also given.

    In Europe, the amalgamation of local authorities is currently used to optimize public resources. Although amalgamation involves several advantages, it needs to fulfil three conditions to be considered successful. First, address local preferences and needs; second, be fair, transparent and accessible to citizens; and third, be a compromise between central and local political elites. In the current paper the fulfilling of these three conditions is analysed using the comprehensive, bottom-up, Finnish reform introduced during the period of 2008-2013. The findings conclude that while the Finnish local reform plan has been successful in reaching a compromise between local and central governments, it has failed insofar as it has not fulfilled the condition of making the process fair, transparent and accessible to citizens. Furthermore, whether the amalgamation has allowed local government to address citizens' preferences and needs in a meaningful and responsive way has yet to be demonstrated.

    This contribution addresses a central theme in morphological analysis, namely the relationship between clitics and inflectional elements. Important contributions on the point are due to Anderson (1992) and Marantz (1988), who, in different ways, connect clitics and affixes. We will propose a solution based on the idea that clitics are part of the inflectional arrangement of the verbal head. Specifically, we will investigate two types of data coming from some Romance varieties in which enclisis and mesoclisis phenomena interact with word formation. These phenomena affect the expression of the Internal Argument and lead us to rethink the analysis of enclisis and mesoclisis in terms of the ability of the inflected verb to realize Phasal domains. In other words, morphology is part of the syntactic computation, and morphemic elements, endowed with interpretable content, are introduced by the operation of Merge.

    We introduce a strong k-rainbow index of graphs as modification of well-known k-rainbow index of graphs. A tree in an edge-colored connected graph G, where adjacent edge may be colored the same, is a rainbow tree if all of its edges have distinct colors. Let k be an integer with 2 ≤ k ≤ n. The strong k-rainbow index of G, denoted by $srx_k(G)$, is the minimum number of colors needed in an edge-coloring of G so that every k vertices of G is connected by a rainbow tree with minimum size. We focus on k = 3. We determine the strong 3-rainbow index of some certain graphs. We also provide a sharp upper bound for the strong 3-rainbow index of amalgamation of graphs. Additionally, we determine the exact values of the strong 3-rainbow index of amalgamation of some graphs.

    Celem badań przedstawionych w artykule była ocena skutków połączenia miasta na prawach powiatu Zielona Góra z gminą wiejską o tej samej nazwie w 2015 roku w kontekście funkcjonowania demokracji lokalnej. A także weryfikacja zjawiska jazdy na gapę z wykorzystaniem wspólnych zasobów w kontekście reformy terytorialnej. Analiza, oparta na quasi-eksperymentalnym schemacie z wykorzystaniem metody synthetic control, nie potwierdziła hipotezy jazdy na gapę z wykorzystaniem wspólnych zasobów, co jest wynikiem odróżniającym to badanie od wcześniej prowadzonych. Wyniki naszego badania wskazują również, że zastosowana w Zielonej Górze strategia może być skuteczna w osiągnięciu pośredniego celu politycznego, jakim było zapewnienie przychylności mieszkańców dla prowadzonej reformy i wysoka legitymizacja jej rezultatów.
    The purpose of the research presented in the article is to assess the effects of the 2015 amalgamation of the Zielona Góra city with the rural commune of the same name on the quality of local democracy. The second goal is to examine the phenomenon of free riding on the common pool in the context of the local-level territorial reform. The analysis, based on a quasi-experimental scheme using the synthetic control method, unlike previous studies, did not confirm the free riding hypothesis. The results of the study also indicate that the strategy implemented in Zielona Góra can be useful in achieving an intermediate political goal, which is to ensure the residents’ approval of the reform and legitimization of its results.

    The amalgamations of municipalities take place in many countries, including Russia. One of the main reasons for this association is the possibility of solving the financial problems of small municipalities with its help, and increasing the efficiency of the use of budget resources. Does the amalgamation of municipalities achieve these goals? The foreign practice of several decades shows that not always after the merger budget funds begin to be spent more efficiently. Russian practice is not so long yet, but now analysis of budget data (for example, alignment of budgetary provision) shows that such conclusions can also be made in Russia. However, this requires a study of the financial security of the newly created municipalities for several years. The article studies such important areas as the financial reasons for the transformation of municipalities; financial support of merging municipalities from higher budgets in order to ensure all territories of municipalities that are included in the newly created municipality; financial and legal consequences of such an association, i.e. whether it is really effective, as was stated when deciding on the association; alignment of budgetary provision of municipalities. It is concluded that it is necessary to consolidate the principle of guaranteeing a municipality in Russian legislation at the federal level if it amalgamates with other municipal entities with financial support at a level not lower than that which it had before the merger. The study results can be used to improve Russian legislation regarding the financial support of municipalities in the process of combining them.

    Small scale mining continues to contribute significantly to the growth of Ghana's economy. However, the sector poses serious dangers to human health and the environment. Ground failures resulting from poorly supported stopes have led to injuries and fatalities in recent times. Dust and fumes from drilling and blasting of ore present health threats due to poor ventilation. Four prominent small scale underground mines were studied to identify the safety issues associated with small scale underground mining in Ghana. It is recognized that small scale underground mining in Ghana is inundated with unsafe acts and conditions including stope collapse, improper choice of working tools, absence of personal protective equipment and land degradation. Inadequate monitoring of the operations and lack of regulatory enforcement by the Minerals Commission of Ghana are major contributing factors to the environmental, safety and national security issues of the operations.

    In this article an attempt has been made to describe the activity of three significant figures in the history of Church: St. Paul of Tarsus, John Paul II and pope Francis as regards the relationships they try to establish with their environment. The inspiration for this work have been the propositions expressed in the exhortation of the present pope Evangelii gaudium and the references to the two abovementioned figures in this text. The need for the two areas to coexist – mass media and the Church – in fulfilling the mission was noticed some time ago, but nowadays, in the era of the modern media and fast technological transformations this need is realized in the operational dimension, also in the area of public relations. Reaching for the available tools and the way these tools are used on the grounds of evangelism are the basis for the main proposal of this article that each time in case of the abovementioned figures we are faced with the creative process of “Gospel inculturation”, and measurable outcomes of this activity are a component of knowledge, sensitivity, motivation and charisma of the spiritual leaders of the Church.
    W niniejszym artykule podjęto próbę opisu działalności trzech wielkich postaci Kościoła: św. Pawła z Tarsu, Jana Pawła II oraz papieża Franciszka w zakresie podejmowanych przez nich relacji z otoczeniem. Inspiracją do podjęcia tego tematu były tezy zawarte w adhortacji obecnego papieża Evangelii gaudium oraz umieszczone w niej odwołania do wspomnianych postaci. Konieczność koegzystencji obu przestrzeni – środków masowego przekazu oraz Kościoła w pełnieniu posłannictwa misyjnego została dostrzeżona przed laty, ale współcześnie, w dobie nowych mediów i szybkich przeobrażeń technologicznych, realizuje się ona w wymiarze operacyjnym, także w obszarze public relations rozumianym jako sztuka osiągania harmonii z otoczeniem poprzez wzajemne porozumienie oparte na zasadach etycznych oraz prawdziwej i pełnej informacji. Opis dostępnych narzędzi oraz sposób ich użycia na gruncie ewangelizacji są podstawą stwierdzenia, iż każdorazowo w przypadku wymienionych postaci mamy do czynienia z twórczym procesem „inkulturacji Ewangelii”, a mierzalne efekty tej aktywności są wypadkową wiedzy, wrażliwości, motywacji i charyzmy duchowych przewodników Kościoła.

    Z aluwiów korytowych Przedgórza Kaczawskiego i obszarów sąsiednich pozyskano ziarna złota rtęciowego z domieszką Hg do 6,95 % wag. Obecność rtęci najczęściej związana jest z partiami złota o wyższych zawartościach Ag. Ziarna podzielić można na podstawie różnic teksturalnych i składu chemicznego na dwie grupy. Pierwszą stanowią złociny o teksturze gąbczastej rozwiniętej w całej objętości ziaren, o zawartości Hg nie przekraczającej < 2 % wag. Złoto tego typu stanowi produkt procesu amalgamacji i jako efekt działalności antropogenicznej może występować we wszystkich znanych wystąpieniach złota rozsypiskowego. Drugą stanowią złociny o bimodalnej budowie, złożone ze stopu Au-Ag o składzie fazy metastabilnej lub elektrum i czystego złota rodzimego. Faza złota rodzimego nie zawiera rtęci. Faza srebrowa ma zwartą teksturę, a koncentracja Hg sięga kilku % wag. Prawdopodobnym obszarem alimentacyjnym tego typu złota są wychodnie stref kontaktu czerwonego spągowca - cechsztynu.
    Particles of mercurial gold with Hg content of max. 6,95 wt % have been found in the riverbeds of the Kaczawskie Foothils and adjacent areas. The presence of mercury is predominantly connected with the parts of gold with higher concentration of silver. Due to structural and chemical differences two types of mercurial gold can be distinguished. The first one comprises gold particles with spongy structure developed in the whole volume of grains, in which the Hg concentration doesn’t exceed 2 wt %. The gold of this type represents the product of the amalgamation process and, as an effect of anthropogenic activity, can occur in the whole known placer gold deposits. The second one comprises gold particles of bimodal structure, made of Au-Ag alloy of unstable or electrum phase and phase of pure gold. The phase of pure gold doesn’t contain Hg. The phase of Ag-bearing gold has a dense structure with a Hg concentration of a few wt %. The outcrops of the contact zones between Rotliegend and Zechstein are the most probable sources of this type of gold.

    The formation of the grammatical number in the standard Balkan languages. A typological comparisonThis article is part of the wider project Grammatica Balkanica, the intentions of which have already been mentioned in previous publications. The present study is based on standard languages and its focus is laid less on historical than on typological aspects. Before dealing with the Balkan languages, a similar approach on the Romance languages was conducted. The present paper discusses the differences and similarities in the formation of the grammatical number in the standard Balkan languages. Formation models will be delivered based on examples. The same approach should be applied to all Slavic languages. The aim of the whole project is to examine the differences and similarities between languages regarding the morphological and syntactic formation patterns, the phenomena of their convergence and divergence, the extent to which these factors are connected to cultural history and cognitive development. Gramatyczna kategoria liczby w językach bałkańskich. Typologia zagadnieniaArtykuł wpisuje się w szerszy projekt Grammatica Balkanica, którego zadania przedstawiono we wcześniejszych publikacjach. Prezentowana obecnie analiza oparta jest na językach literackich i koncentruje się przede wszystkim na aspekcie typologicznym, mniej zaś na historycznym. Wcześniej przeprowadzono analogiczne badania porównawcze w odniesieniu do języków romańskich W tym artykule skoncentrowano się na inwentaryzacji różnic i podobieństw w formach wyrażania semantycznej kategorii liczby w literackich odmianach języków bałkańskich. Strukturalne modele tej kategorii oparte są na analizie konkretnych przykładów. Podobne podejście będzie zastosowane w przyszłości do języków słowiańskich. Celem całego projektu jest zbadanie międzyjęzykowych różnic i podobieństw w sferze morfologicznych i syntaktycznych wzorców wyrażania, stwierdzenie konwergencji i dywergencji w tym zakresie oraz określenie, w jakim stopniu czynniki te wpisują się w historię kultury i w procesy kognitywne.
