Opis:
Two coniferous forest communities were selected for analysis: a marshy coniferous forest and a young spruce forest, both located in the Borecka Forest. Thermal conditions develop differently in each community during the spring, due to different tree crown closure, which influences the amount of direct solar radiation reaching the substratum. Soil humidity is another factor influencing the air temperature, since the capacity and thermal inertia of the soil depend on its humidity. The results of the study are compared with thermal conditions outside the forest.

Opis:
This study aims to identify the extent of mountain glacier influence on air temperature in the vertical profile, using the Engabreen glacier (Norway) as an example. An important aspect of the work is also an analysis of the variation in surface temperature and wind conditions in the valley of the Engabreen glacier. The analysis was carried out based on measurement data of vertical air temperature taken over the glacier cavity with sensors mounted to an unmanned aerial vehicle. The field survey was carried out on 25 July 2022 in the afternoon. The results of the measurements may indicate that the presence of the glacier reduces the air temperature gradient with altitude compared to the surrounding areas. Above the glacier, the air temperature in the vertical profile increases with height. Based on the profiles taken above the glacier, it was concluded that the surface of the glacier influences the air temperature above it up to an altitude of 37–53 m above ground level.

Opis:
The aim of the study is to investigate the course of air temperature and precipitation in Łódź Province in 1966–2021. The study uses daily data provided by the IMGW-PIB net from three meteorological stations: Łódź–Lublinek, Sulejów, and Wieluń. The average air temperature in Łódź province is 8.3ºC. When analyzing the annual course of air temperature, the lowest values were recorded in January (2.1ºC on average), the highest were recorded in July (18.4ºC). A growing, statistically significant trend in air temperature was observed at all the stations in the analyzed multi-year period. The rate of changes in the average air temperature in Łódź province reached the maximum value of 0.35°C/10 years at all the three analyzed stations. The average rainfall totals in Łódź province are not very diversified. The average annual sum of precipitation in the analyzed period in Łódź province ranged from 562.2 mm to 597.2 mm. On a seasonal scale, the heaviest precipitation was in the summer months (June–August), and the lowest in winter (December–February), while autumn rainfallwas slightly higher than in the spring. The biggest amounts of rainfall were recorded in July (84.8 mm), while the minimum rainfall was in February (25.8 mm). At all the stations, there was an upward trend in precipitation in the spring and autumn, and a downward trend in the summer. On average, in Łódź province there were 169 days with precipitation.

Basis of the study was made up of the results of automatic, hourly measurements of air temperature and bare soil temperature originating from the agrometeorological station in Lipnik (53o21’ N; 14o58’ E, 30 m AMSL) from the period of 2001-2005. Basing on the results of the linear regression analysis, relationships for particular months were determined between daily soil temperature at four depths and air temperature set in seven different combinations. It was stated that the highest possibilities of daily soil temperature prediction in profile to 50 cm are characteristic for the air temperature that is the average from 24 hourly measurements. Average absolute differences between the actual soil temperature and the one calculated from equations for this relation oscillate in the particular months between 1.3oC at the depth of 5 cm and 0.5oC at the depth of 50 cm. On average, the smallest differences apply to the warm half of the year and the depth of 50 cm. It was shown that significantly smaller possibilities of the estimation of daily soil temperature values are characteristic for daily air temperature amplitude.
Przeciętnie najmniejsze różnice dotyczą ciepłej połowy roku i głębokości 50 cm. Wykazano, że zdecydowanie najmniejszymi możliwościami szacowania dobowych wartości temperatury gleby odznacza się dobowa amplituda temperatury powietrza.

The aim of the study was to assess the impact of thermal conditions on emission of PM10 in the atmosphere during the winter period in selected Polish cities. The basis of the work were average daily PM10 and air temperature measurement results, which were made in six cities during three of calendar winters (December-February) in 2011–2014. It has been shown that every decrease in temperature during the winter affects the increase in the concentration of PM10 in ambient air in most of the analyzed cities. The greatest role of air temperature in shaping emission of the fraction of particulate matter variability was found in a relatively cool winter 2011/2012, when the number of days with oversize levels of contamination ranged from 7 in Suwałki to even 46 in Nowy Sącz. The smallest impact of this weather element was found during a warm winter 2013/2014.

This paper presents a detailed characterisation of thermal conditions in the Canadian Arctic from 1951 to 2005. For this purpose, monthly data (average, maximum and minimum temperatures) for 12 meteorological stations have been used (Table 1, Figure 1). Basic climatological characteristics have been calculated (Tables 3 and 4) and their spatial distributions are shown on maps (Figure 2). For seasonal and annual mean air temperature, the frequency of their occurrence in 1-degree intervals (Figure 4) as well as year-to-year changes (Table 4) have been calculated. For two time periods (1951-2005 and 1976-2005) air temperature trends for seasonal and annual means have also been presented (Table 5 and Figure 7). In both periods, areally averaged trends for the Canadian Arctic are positive. The greatest temperature trends were noted in autumn: 0.30°C/decade and 0.91°C/decade, respectively. From the period 1951-2005 to the period 1976-2005 a significant rise in trend values was observed, with the exception of winter. In the latter period, trends were statistically significant in summer, autumn and for the year as a whole. In the period 1951-2005, statistically significant trends occurred only in autumn (see Table 5). Thermal classifications of each month and year of the study period have been made according to the proposals of Miętus et al. (2002) (see Table 2 and Figure 8). The results of this classification show that after 1993 a significant increase in the number of months and years, classified as abnormally or extremely warm, was noted.

Opis:
This study determines the approximate duration of the thermal seasons in Warsaw, and investigates their long-term variability. The measurement data come from the Ursynów meteorological station at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences (WULS) (λE 21°02’52’’, φN 52°09’38’’, 102.5 m a.s.l.), situated in the south of Warsaw, and comprise mean diurnal air temperatures for the years 1961-2013. In order to identify thermal seasons, the method of five-day rolling averages was applied, which revealed a substantial year-by-year variability. The achieved results were close to those found by other methods for stations situated within the same climatic region. Over the analysed period, winters and springs have become shorter, whereas the other two seasons have become longer. Nevertheless, the positive trend was only statistically significant for thermal summers. The increasing length of the thermal summer in Warsaw Ursynów may be due to the influence of urban heat islands in built-up areas.

The main objective of this article was to determine thermal conditions in the Christmas period and the impact of atmospheric circulation on their formation. The article is based on data on the mean daily air temperature for 16 stations in Poland for the 1966-2014 multiannual period. In this period, no statistically significant changes of air temperature were observed, neither in December, nor the Christmas period. The occurrence of averagely warmer holidays was associated with the inflow of maritime polar air masses from the western sector, while colder holidays occurred with the inflow of continental polar air masses from the eastern sector.

Opis:
On the Antarctic the annual course of air temperature shows a considerable spatial differentiation. Over the inland the course of temperature during the year is conditioned by insolation-radiational factors. On the coast the role of circulation factors connected with the advection of air masses from above the ocean or from the interior of the continent. In the paper mean monthly air temperatures from 56 stations making standard meteorological observations and from 38 automatic weather stations (AWS) have been used. On the Antarctic there types of annual air temperature courses can be distinguished: Oceanic - characterised by positive air temperatures in the summer season with the highest temperatures in February and by mild temperatures in the winter months (to -10°C). As a result of the ocean influence spring is considerable colder then autumn. The annual amplitudes are small (to 10-15°C). This type occurs on the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula and on the subantarctic islands. Continental - with very low air temperatures. The warmest month is December with temperatures below -30°C in the interior of the continent. In winter the lowest mean monthly temperatures reach -70°C. The temperature frequently increases in the middle of winter; this phenomenon is called kernlose winter. The annual amplitude of air temperature is not high and in the interior its value reaches 30-35°C. The continental type includes the whole Antarctic except the narrow coastal belt. Coastal - characterised by air temperature around 0°C in the summer period. The warmest month is January. The lowest temperatures occur in January (-30° do -40°C). The growth of temperature in spring delays the heat uptake for the melting of sea ice. The annual amplitude of the air temperature is quite high and exceeds 20°C. Due to the influence of circulation factors on the Antarctic the annual course of the air temperature shows a large variability from year to year.

Opis:
The progressive increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere in consequence leads to the rise of the global air temperature. According to the III Report of IPCC (2001) from 1880 the mean temperature on the Earth has grown by 0.6°C ą0.2°C. The reaction of polar regions to the greenhouse effect is unknown. The Antarctic climate shows a considerably greater variability in comparison with the lower latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere. This is conditioned by interactions between the atmospheric circulation, the ocean, and the cryosphere. According to the scenarios of global greenhouse effect the temperature at the polar regions should grow by 3°C in summer and 4-5°C in winter. However, these model researches are not confirmed in reality. This shows that our knowledge concerning the functioning of climate system of the polar regions is insufficient. In the paper we have used monthly mean air temperature values for 21 stations being in operation on the Antarctic in the years 1958-2000 and for 34 stations making observations in the years 1981-2000. After checking the homogeneity of the series by the Alexandersson?s (1986) test we have counted the trends of air temperature. The average trend for annual and seasonal values were expressed by temperature change per 10 years. In the years 1958-2000 on the Antarctic the trend of the mean annual values of the air temperature shows great spatial differentiation. These differences are connected with the radiation balance depending on the variability of cloudiness and the albedo of the surface, and on the transformation of pressure fields and changes of the atmospheric circulation. Statistically significant (on 0.95 significance level) air temperature increase occurred on the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula (for example Faraday 0.67°C/10 years) and at the stations Belgrano and McMurdo. A negative air temperature trend occurred on the South Pole (-0.21°C/10 years) and on the Droning Maud Land. The temperature changes in the region of the Antarctic Peninsula are correlated with the extension and surface of sea ice, especially in winter. There are considerable differences of air temperature trends on the Antarctic between the periods 1958-1980 and 1981-2000. The period 1958-1980 is characterized by an increase of air temperature, especially on the shore of continent (Casey 0.84°C/10 years, Faraday 0.76°C/10 years, Halley 0.69°C/10 years). The interior of the continent is distinguished by stability of weather conditions. Year-to-year temperature changes are smaller, then at the coast (the trend at the Amundsen-Scott station average 0.26°C/10 years). During the last years (1981-2000) significant changes took place in the tendency of air temperature on the Antarctic. In many regions of the Antarctic cooling began, on the cost of East Antarctica the temperature decreases, on the coasts of the Wilkes Land (Casey -0.82°C/10 years) and the Weddell Sea (Halley -1.13?C/10 years, Larsen Ice -0.89°C/10 years), especially in the autumn-winter period. In the interior of the continent also lower and lower temperatures occurred (Amundsen-Scott -0.42°C/10 years, Dome C -0.71°C/10 years). The cooling can be observed in all seasons, but it is the greatest in summer and autumn, when the decrease of solar radiation was observed in connection with the growing cloudiness. Vostok situated at the highest parts of ice dome does not show statistically significant trend. An increase of the temperature was observed in the interior of West Antarctica (Byrd 0.37°C/10 years). The warming rate of the climate became weaker on the Antarctic Peninsula (Faraday 0.56°C/10 years). The largest temperature changes occurred in the autumn-winter season when in the Antarctic Peninsula region the temperature increased, while in the interior and at the coast of East Antarctica considerably fell. Climate changes during the last 20 years of the 20th century showed the weakening of the warming rate on the Antarctic Peninsula and distinct cooling on the East Antarctica. The lack of warming, or even cooling, on the East Antarctica, is favourable to maintain the present climate system in this region. The increasing air temperature on the West Antarctic, especially on the Antarctic Peninsula caused many natural consequences. The ablation of glaciers clearly intensified, deglaciation takes place, glaciers retreat. The environmental changes lead to disturbances in the functioning of the Antarctic ecosystem.

The paper presents the dynamics of daily water temperature fluctuations in Lake Kierskie (West Poland) and determines the effect of air temperatures and wind speed on the variability of the parameter (water temperature). The analysis was based on hourly water temperature values from the period from May 2012 to January 2018. The data analysis permitted the description of the thermal regime of waters in the lake in the hourly cycle in reference to each month, and designation of months characterised by the highest and lowest stability of water temperatures. More than half of the analysed days was characterised by a change in water temperature not exceeding 1°C. The course of water temperature showed strongly positive correlations with air temperature, and weak correlations with wind speed. Water temperatures in the lake were correlated the strongest with air temperatures with a 24 h time step.

Opis:
Seasonal variability is the complex non-linear response of the physical climate system. There are two types of natural variability: those external and internal to the climate system. In any given season, natural variability may cause the climate to be different than its long-term average. This study examines with the seasonal variation of the maximum temperatures during the summer season. In addition, the maximum temperatures in May become close to the characteristics of the summer season. The monthly data for maximum temperature of May, June and July were used from Iraqi Meteorological Organization and Seismology (IMOS) for 47 years from 1970 to 2017 for Baghdad city. This period was long enough to estimate the range of approaching maximum temperature (Tmax) May to summer. Results revealed a significant Tmax for Baghdad during the second period (1992–2017) and ?shown similar behavior of Tmax in May to June and July; on the contrary that first period (1970–1991). In second period, two phases have been found out, positive phase and negative phase. The positive phase were happened in 1995, 1999, and 2006, and the negative phase was four cases (1992, 2004, 2013, and 2016), while a few cases recorded in first period. The amplitudes of monthly variability had same distance of leaner correlation especially in 1999 and 2013 that represent coherent wave with summer seasons. The variance difference for Tmax between May and June approximately was 2°C for second study’s period, while exceed this range in first period. This variance change to 7.5°C when found difference between July and May.

Opis:
The paper provides a comparison of minimum air temperature (TN), maximum air temperature (TX), mean air temperature (Tmean) and a few derived temperature indices for Herschel Island (Qikiqtaruk) in the Yukon Territory, Canada for the periods 1899–1905 and 2008–2014. A significant increase in the TN was noted at +4.2°C, which was a larger increase than that for both Tmean (+3.7°C) and TX (+3.5°C). Air temperature increased the most in October, November, and December. In addition, the length of the frost-free season increased by 26 days and the length of the growing season increased by 25 days from the early 20th century to the early 21st century. The increase in the TN also triggered a change in the plant hardiness zone where Herschel Island is located. However, the daily air temperature range declined over the course of the study period as well as the annual total of heating degree days and the number of exceptionally cold days. No statistically significant change in the number of freeze-thaw days was found for the studied periods.

Opis:
Due to solar radiation exposure, air flowing inside a thermometer screen may produce a measurement error of 0.8°C or higher. To improve the air temperature observation accuracy, a temperature error correction method is proposed. The correction method is based on a computational fluid dynamics method and a genetic algorithm method. The computational fluid dynamics method is implemented to analyze and calculate the temperature errors of a screen under various environmental conditions. Then, a temperature error correction equation is obtained by fitting the computational fluid dynamics results using the genetic algorithm method. To verify the performance of the correction equation the screen and an aspirated temperature measurement platform are characterized in the same environment to conduct the intercomparison. The aspirated temperature measurement platform serves as an air temperature reference. The mean temperature error given by measurements is 0.77°C, and the mean temperature error given by correction equation is 0.79°C. This correction equation allows the temperature error to be reduced by approximately 97.5%.

Opis:
Knowledge about the history of climate in the Arctic is more and more important and necessary, especially at present when we are approaching the Fourth International Polar Year 2007-2008. Generally speaking, the history of the climate in this area during the 20th century is quite well known. On the other hand, little is known about the climate in the 19th century. Moreover, while we have extensive meteorological data for this period, in particular for the American Arctic, these data have many errors and biases. One of the most important biases is connected with the way in which daily mean air temperature has been calcu-lated. In the American Arctic during the 19th century nine different methods (m1-m9) were used. For the analysis we also added two presently used methods (m10-m11). The main aim of this paper is to estimate the magnitudes of errors which are connected with the use of the above methods of calculating daily means. As a real daily mean, the mean calculated using hourly data (m1) was used. Because in the American Arctic the mean daily air temperature is still calculated using formulae m11, we also calculated differences relative to this mean. Another issue which we undertake in the present paper concerns the estimation of errors which are the result of the method which was adopted to determine extreme temperatures (Tmax and Tmin) and the diurnal temperature range (DTR). We checked this for ten different methods (nine used in the 19th century) which used hourly, 2-, 3-, and 4-hourly etc. readings of air temperature for the purposes of calculation (see formulas m1-m10 for more details). As a base, real data, temperature readings from the extreme thermometers were used. For the analysis, hourly temperature data as well as daily Tmax and Tmin for the period 1979-1983 were used for the four meteorological stations (Eureka, Resolute, Coral Harbour and Iqaluit) located in the American Arctic. The results of our investigations are presented in Tables 1-5. The main conclusions can be summarized as follows: 1. Mean monthly temperatures obtained using methods m2-m5 and m9 of daily mean temperature calculation do not need to be corrected. The greatest errors (overestimation by 0.5 to 1.5°C) were found for the methods m6-m8 (owing to a lack of measurements during the night hours). The method m11 also produces significant errors. Generally, using this method, the mean monthly temperatures are most often lower (by 0.2 to 0.7°C) in relation to all methods analysed in the present paper (see Tables 1 and 2). 2. In accordance with expectations, mean monthly Tmax and Tmin determined using different methods are lower/higher than the respective monthly means calculated based on the readings from the maximum and minimum thermometers. When we determine Tmax and Tmin using hourly, 2-, and 3-hourly data, their monthly means are lower/higher, though generally by no more than 1.0°C. Greater errors are more clearly seen in the cold half-year than in the warm half-year (see Tables 3 and 4), 3. Mean monthly DTR calculated using hourly, 2-, and 3-hourly temperature data are lower than real values by about 0.5 to 2.0°C. For other methods of DTR calculations their errors are significantly greater - lower by about 3.0 to 4.0°C (see Table 5).

The purpose of this study was to determine the contemporary changes of precipitation and nival conditions in the high-mountain area of Tatras. Main features of thermal climate changes are the background of this investigation. The study makes use of the daily data from the weather station on Kasprowy Wierch Mt. from the years 1966-2006. Various climate characteristics were considered. The increase of the air temperature is not accompanied by significant changes in precipitation conditions. The signs of the more continentality climate features are also visible. The warming and a slight decrease in precipitation and the evolution of circulation conditions significantly influence the length of the period with the snow cover and not significantly its depth.

Opis:
This article presents the results of studies conducted on the variability of thermal and precipitation conditions in Poland in the second half of the 20th century, especially taking into consideration periods which were unfavorable for agricultural production. Averaged spatial temperatures and precipitation totals from consecutive years 1951 to 2000 were used. A significant increase in spring temperatures was noted, while the winters also became warmer. This had a significant effect upon the change of the thermal vegetation period's duration. No changing trends were noted with regard to the amount of precipitation. The analysis of the seasonal structure during the anomalous years, with regard to temperature and the amount of precipitation, made it possible to pinpoint years particularly unfavorable for agricultural production. There was a certain repeatability of unfavorable conditions, tied to the existence of a relatively stable 8-year cycle of temperature change, which was especially noticeable during the wintertime. During the last two decades of the 20th century, high temperature values, occurring also in the summertime, in combination with insufficient precipitation, contributed to the occurrence of dry spells and even periods of drought. The occurrence of dry spells during the vegetation period and the extreme shortening of the vegetation period have a significant effect upon the amount of grain crop production.
