Opis:
Two coniferous forest communities were selected for analysis: a marshy coniferous forest and a young spruce forest, both located in the Borecka Forest. Thermal conditions develop differently in each community during the spring, due to different tree crown closure, which influences the amount of direct solar radiation reaching the substratum. Soil humidity is another factor influencing the air temperature, since the capacity and thermal inertia of the soil depend on its humidity. The results of the study are compared with thermal conditions outside the forest.

Opis:
Basis of the study was made up of the results of automatic, hourly measurements of air temperature and bare soil temperature originating from the agrometeorological station in Lipnik (53o21’ N; 14o58’ E, 30 m AMSL) from the period of 2001-2005. Basing on the results of the linear regression analysis, relationships for particular months were determined between daily soil temperature at four depths and air temperature set in seven different combinations. It was stated that the highest possibilities of daily soil temperature prediction in profile to 50 cm are characteristic for the air temperature that is the average from 24 hourly measurements. Average absolute differences between the actual soil temperature and the one calculated from equations for this relation oscillate in the particular months between 1.3oC at the depth of 5 cm and 0.5oC at the depth of 50 cm. On average, the smallest differences apply to the warm half of the year and the depth of 50 cm. It was shown that significantly smaller possibilities of the estimation of daily soil temperature values are characteristic for daily air temperature amplitude.
Przeciętnie najmniejsze różnice dotyczą ciepłej połowy roku i głębokości 50 cm. Wykazano, że zdecydowanie najmniejszymi możliwościami szacowania dobowych wartości temperatury gleby odznacza się dobowa amplituda temperatury powietrza.

The aim of the study was to assess the impact of thermal conditions on emission of PM10 in the atmosphere during the winter period in selected Polish cities. The basis of the work were average daily PM10 and air temperature measurement results, which were made in six cities during three of calendar winters (December-February) in 2011–2014. It has been shown that every decrease in temperature during the winter affects the increase in the concentration of PM10 in ambient air in most of the analyzed cities. The greatest role of air temperature in shaping emission of the fraction of particulate matter variability was found in a relatively cool winter 2011/2012, when the number of days with oversize levels of contamination ranged from 7 in Suwałki to even 46 in Nowy Sącz. The smallest impact of this weather element was found during a warm winter 2013/2014.

This paper presents a detailed characterisation of thermal conditions in the Canadian Arctic from 1951 to 2005. For this purpose, monthly data (average, maximum and minimum temperatures) for 12 meteorological stations have been used (Table 1, Figure 1). Basic climatological characteristics have been calculated (Tables 3 and 4) and their spatial distributions are shown on maps (Figure 2). For seasonal and annual mean air temperature, the frequency of their occurrence in 1-degree intervals (Figure 4) as well as year-to-year changes (Table 4) have been calculated. For two time periods (1951-2005 and 1976-2005) air temperature trends for seasonal and annual means have also been presented (Table 5 and Figure 7). In both periods, areally averaged trends for the Canadian Arctic are positive. The greatest temperature trends were noted in autumn: 0.30°C/decade and 0.91°C/decade, respectively. From the period 1951-2005 to the period 1976-2005 a significant rise in trend values was observed, with the exception of winter. In the latter period, trends were statistically significant in summer, autumn and for the year as a whole. In the period 1951-2005, statistically significant trends occurred only in autumn (see Table 5). Thermal classifications of each month and year of the study period have been made according to the proposals of Miętus et al. (2002) (see Table 2 and Figure 8). The results of this classification show that after 1993 a significant increase in the number of months and years, classified as abnormally or extremely warm, was noted.

Opis:
On the Antarctic the annual course of air temperature shows a considerable spatial differentiation. Over the inland the course of temperature during the year is conditioned by insolation-radiational factors. On the coast the role of circulation factors connected with the advection of air masses from above the ocean or from the interior of the continent. In the paper mean monthly air temperatures from 56 stations making standard meteorological observations and from 38 automatic weather stations (AWS) have been used. On the Antarctic there types of annual air temperature courses can be distinguished: Oceanic - characterised by positive air temperatures in the summer season with the highest temperatures in February and by mild temperatures in the winter months (to -10°C). As a result of the ocean influence spring is considerable colder then autumn. The annual amplitudes are small (to 10-15°C). This type occurs on the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula and on the subantarctic islands. Continental - with very low air temperatures. The warmest month is December with temperatures below -30°C in the interior of the continent. In winter the lowest mean monthly temperatures reach -70°C. The temperature frequently increases in the middle of winter; this phenomenon is called kernlose winter. The annual amplitude of air temperature is not high and in the interior its value reaches 30-35°C. The continental type includes the whole Antarctic except the narrow coastal belt. Coastal - characterised by air temperature around 0°C in the summer period. The warmest month is January. The lowest temperatures occur in January (-30° do -40°C). The growth of temperature in spring delays the heat uptake for the melting of sea ice. The annual amplitude of the air temperature is quite high and exceeds 20°C. Due to the influence of circulation factors on the Antarctic the annual course of the air temperature shows a large variability from year to year.

Opis:
The progressive increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere in consequence leads to the rise of the global air temperature. According to the III Report of IPCC (2001) from 1880 the mean temperature on the Earth has grown by 0.6°C ą0.2°C. The reaction of polar regions to the greenhouse effect is unknown. The Antarctic climate shows a considerably greater variability in comparison with the lower latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere. This is conditioned by interactions between the atmospheric circulation, the ocean, and the cryosphere. According to the scenarios of global greenhouse effect the temperature at the polar regions should grow by 3°C in summer and 4-5°C in winter. However, these model researches are not confirmed in reality. This shows that our knowledge concerning the functioning of climate system of the polar regions is insufficient. In the paper we have used monthly mean air temperature values for 21 stations being in operation on the Antarctic in the years 1958-2000 and for 34 stations making observations in the years 1981-2000. After checking the homogeneity of the series by the Alexandersson?s (1986) test we have counted the trends of air temperature. The average trend for annual and seasonal values were expressed by temperature change per 10 years. In the years 1958-2000 on the Antarctic the trend of the mean annual values of the air temperature shows great spatial differentiation. These differences are connected with the radiation balance depending on the variability of cloudiness and the albedo of the surface, and on the transformation of pressure fields and changes of the atmospheric circulation. Statistically significant (on 0.95 significance level) air temperature increase occurred on the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula (for example Faraday 0.67°C/10 years) and at the stations Belgrano and McMurdo. A negative air temperature trend occurred on the South Pole (-0.21°C/10 years) and on the Droning Maud Land. The temperature changes in the region of the Antarctic Peninsula are correlated with the extension and surface of sea ice, especially in winter. There are considerable differences of air temperature trends on the Antarctic between the periods 1958-1980 and 1981-2000. The period 1958-1980 is characterized by an increase of air temperature, especially on the shore of continent (Casey 0.84°C/10 years, Faraday 0.76°C/10 years, Halley 0.69°C/10 years). The interior of the continent is distinguished by stability of weather conditions. Year-to-year temperature changes are smaller, then at the coast (the trend at the Amundsen-Scott station average 0.26°C/10 years). During the last years (1981-2000) significant changes took place in the tendency of air temperature on the Antarctic. In many regions of the Antarctic cooling began, on the cost of East Antarctica the temperature decreases, on the coasts of the Wilkes Land (Casey -0.82°C/10 years) and the Weddell Sea (Halley -1.13?C/10 years, Larsen Ice -0.89°C/10 years), especially in the autumn-winter period. In the interior of the continent also lower and lower temperatures occurred (Amundsen-Scott -0.42°C/10 years, Dome C -0.71°C/10 years). The cooling can be observed in all seasons, but it is the greatest in summer and autumn, when the decrease of solar radiation was observed in connection with the growing cloudiness. Vostok situated at the highest parts of ice dome does not show statistically significant trend. An increase of the temperature was observed in the interior of West Antarctica (Byrd 0.37°C/10 years). The warming rate of the climate became weaker on the Antarctic Peninsula (Faraday 0.56°C/10 years). The largest temperature changes occurred in the autumn-winter season when in the Antarctic Peninsula region the temperature increased, while in the interior and at the coast of East Antarctica considerably fell. Climate changes during the last 20 years of the 20th century showed the weakening of the warming rate on the Antarctic Peninsula and distinct cooling on the East Antarctica. The lack of warming, or even cooling, on the East Antarctica, is favourable to maintain the present climate system in this region. The increasing air temperature on the West Antarctic, especially on the Antarctic Peninsula caused many natural consequences. The ablation of glaciers clearly intensified, deglaciation takes place, glaciers retreat. The environmental changes lead to disturbances in the functioning of the Antarctic ecosystem.

This study determines the approximate duration of the thermal seasons in Warsaw, and investigates their long-term variability. The measurement data come from the Ursynów meteorological station at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences (WULS) (λE 21°02’52’’, φN 52°09’38’’, 102.5 m a.s.l.), situated in the south of Warsaw, and comprise mean diurnal air temperatures for the years 1961-2013. In order to identify thermal seasons, the method of five-day rolling averages was applied, which revealed a substantial year-by-year variability. The achieved results were close to those found by other methods for stations situated within the same climatic region. Over the analysed period, winters and springs have become shorter, whereas the other two seasons have become longer. Nevertheless, the positive trend was only statistically significant for thermal summers. The increasing length of the thermal summer in Warsaw Ursynów may be due to the influence of urban heat islands in built-up areas.

The main objective of this article was to determine thermal conditions in the Christmas period and the impact of atmospheric circulation on their formation. The article is based on data on the mean daily air temperature for 16 stations in Poland for the 1966-2014 multiannual period. In this period, no statistically significant changes of air temperature were observed, neither in December, nor the Christmas period. The occurrence of averagely warmer holidays was associated with the inflow of maritime polar air masses from the western sector, while colder holidays occurred with the inflow of continental polar air masses from the eastern sector.

The paper presents the dynamics of daily water temperature fluctuations in Lake Kierskie (West Poland) and determines the effect of air temperatures and wind speed on the variability of the parameter (water temperature). The analysis was based on hourly water temperature values from the period from May 2012 to January 2018. The data analysis permitted the description of the thermal regime of waters in the lake in the hourly cycle in reference to each month, and designation of months characterised by the highest and lowest stability of water temperatures. More than half of the analysed days was characterised by a change in water temperature not exceeding 1°C. The course of water temperature showed strongly positive correlations with air temperature, and weak correlations with wind speed. Water temperatures in the lake were correlated the strongest with air temperatures with a 24 h time step.

The paper provides a comparison of minimum air temperature (TN), maximum air temperature (TX), mean air temperature (Tmean) and a few derived temperature indices for Herschel Island (Qikiqtaruk) in the Yukon Territory, Canada for the periods 1899–1905 and 2008–2014. A significant increase in the TN was noted at +4.2°C, which was a larger increase than that for both Tmean (+3.7°C) and TX (+3.5°C). Air temperature increased the most in October, November, and December. In addition, the length of the frost-free season increased by 26 days and the length of the growing season increased by 25 days from the early 20th century to the early 21st century. The increase in the TN also triggered a change in the plant hardiness zone where Herschel Island is located. However, the daily air temperature range declined over the course of the study period as well as the annual total of heating degree days and the number of exceptionally cold days. No statistically significant change in the number of freeze-thaw days was found for the studied periods.

Opis:
Seasonal variability is the complex non-linear response of the physical climate system. There are two types of natural variability: those external and internal to the climate system. In any given season, natural variability may cause the climate to be different than its long-term average. This study examines with the seasonal variation of the maximum temperatures during the summer season. In addition, the maximum temperatures in May become close to the characteristics of the summer season. The monthly data for maximum temperature of May, June and July were used from Iraqi Meteorological Organization and Seismology (IMOS) for 47 years from 1970 to 2017 for Baghdad city. This period was long enough to estimate the range of approaching maximum temperature (Tmax) May to summer. Results revealed a significant Tmax for Baghdad during the second period (1992–2017) and ?shown similar behavior of Tmax in May to June and July; on the contrary that first period (1970–1991). In second period, two phases have been found out, positive phase and negative phase. The positive phase were happened in 1995, 1999, and 2006, and the negative phase was four cases (1992, 2004, 2013, and 2016), while a few cases recorded in first period. The amplitudes of monthly variability had same distance of leaner correlation especially in 1999 and 2013 that represent coherent wave with summer seasons. The variance difference for Tmax between May and June approximately was 2°C for second study’s period, while exceed this range in first period. Opis:
Due to solar radiation exposure, air flowing inside a thermometer screen may produce a measurement error of 0.8°C or higher. To improve the air temperature observation accuracy, a temperature error correction method is proposed. The correction method is based on a computational fluid dynamics method and a genetic algorithm method. The computational fluid dynamics method is implemented to analyze and calculate the temperature errors of a screen under various environmental conditions. Then, a temperature error correction equation is obtained by fitting the computational fluid dynamics results using the genetic algorithm method. To verify the performance of the correction equation the screen and an aspirated temperature measurement platform are characterized in the same environment to conduct the intercomparison. The aspirated temperature measurement platform serves as an air temperature reference. The mean temperature error given by measurements is 0.77°C, and the mean temperature error given by correction equation is 0.79°C. This correction equation allows the temperature error to be reduced by approximately 97.5%.

Knowledge about the history of climate in the Arctic is more and more important and necessary, especially at present when we are approaching the Fourth International Polar Year 2007-2008. Generally speaking, the history of the climate in this area during the 20th century is quite well known. On the other hand, little is known about the climate in the 19th century. Moreover, while we have extensive meteorological data for this period, in particular for the American Arctic, these data have many errors and biases. One of the most important biases is connected with the way in which daily mean air temperature has been calcu-lated. In the American Arctic during the 19th century nine different methods (m1-m9) were used. For the analysis we also added two presently used methods (m10-m11). The main aim of this paper is to estimate the magnitudes of errors which are connected with the use of the above methods of calculating daily means. As a real daily mean, the mean calculated using hourly data (m1) was used. Because in the American Arctic the mean daily air temperature is still calculated using formulae m11, we also calculated differences relative to this mean. Another issue which we undertake in the present paper concerns the estimation of errors which are the result of the method which was adopted to determine extreme temperatures (Tmax and Tmin) and the diurnal temperature range (DTR). We checked this for ten different methods (nine used in the 19th century) which used hourly, 2-, 3-, and 4-hourly etc. readings of air temperature for the purposes of calculation (see formulas m1-m10 for more details). As a base, real data, temperature readings from the extreme thermometers were used. For the analysis, hourly temperature data as well as daily Tmax and Tmin for the period 1979-1983 were used for the four meteorological stations (Eureka, Resolute, Coral Harbour and Iqaluit) located in the American Arctic. The results of our investigations are presented in Tables 1-5. The main conclusions can be summarized as follows: 1. Mean monthly temperatures obtained using methods m2-m5 and m9 of daily mean temperature calculation do not need to be corrected. The greatest errors (overestimation by 0.5 to 1.5°C) were found for the methods m6-m8 (owing to a lack of measurements during the night hours). The method m11 also produces significant errors. Generally, using this method, the mean monthly temperatures are most often lower (by 0.2 to 0.7°C) in relation to all methods analysed in the present paper (see Tables 1 and 2). 2. In accordance with expectations, mean monthly Tmax and Tmin determined using different methods are lower/higher than the respective monthly means calculated based on the readings from the maximum and minimum thermometers. When we determine Tmax and Tmin using hourly, 2-, and 3-hourly data, their monthly means are lower/higher, though generally by no more than 1.0°C. Greater errors are more clearly seen in the cold half-year than in the warm half-year (see Tables 3 and 4), 3. Mean monthly DTR calculated using hourly, 2-, and 3-hourly temperature data are lower than real values by about 0.5 to 2.0°C. For other methods of DTR calculations their errors are significantly greater - lower by about 3.0 to 4.0°C (see Table 5).

The forest line has been widely studied by a number of scientists representing various research disciplines. Changes in its position are an indicator of climate change. However, despite numerous studies, it is not always known what has the greatest influence on the position of the forest line. In the Tatras, which are Alpine moun-tains, the position of the forest line in places not disturbed by human activity or slope processes mainly depends on the annual mean air temperature and the number of days with negative temperature and its value in the warm season. The most unfavourable thermal conditions are found at the bottoms of concave landforms, just above the forest line. This thermal barrier effectively limits the upward movement of the forest line, even if the average annual temperature increases. Small concave landforms may have a higher vertical temperature gradient and lower air temperature values at their bottoms than larger and higher-lying forms.

The purpose of this study was to determine the contemporary changes of precipitation and nival conditions in the high-mountain area of Tatras. Main features of thermal climate changes are the background of this investigation. The study makes use of the daily data from the weather station on Kasprowy Wierch Mt. from the years 1966-2006. Various climate characteristics were considered. The increase of the air temperature is not accompanied by significant changes in precipitation conditions. The signs of the more continentality climate features are also visible. The warming and a slight decrease in precipitation and the evolution of circulation conditions significantly influence the length of the period with the snow cover and not significantly its depth.

Opis:
This article presents the results of studies conducted on the variability of thermal and precipitation conditions in Poland in the second half of the 20th century, especially taking into consideration periods which were unfavorable for agricultural production. Averaged spatial temperatures and precipitation totals from consecutive years 1951 to 2000 were used. A significant increase in spring temperatures was noted, while the winters also became warmer. This had a significant effect upon the change of the thermal vegetation period's duration. No changing trends were noted with regard to the amount of precipitation. The analysis of the seasonal structure during the anomalous years, with regard to temperature and the amount of precipitation, made it possible to pinpoint years particularly unfavorable for agricultural production. There was a certain repeatability of unfavorable conditions, tied to the existence of a relatively stable 8-year cycle of temperature change, which was especially noticeable during the wintertime. During the last two decades of the 20th century, high temperature values, occurring also in the summertime, in combination with insufficient precipitation, contributed to the occurrence of dry spells and even periods of drought. The occurrence of dry spells during the vegetation period and the extreme shortening of the vegetation period have a significant effect upon the amount of grain crop production.

The climate of a high-altitude postglacial cirque, such as Kozia Dolinka, is conducive to the occurrence of permafrost. Both the depth of permafrost and the area it covers, as well as the presence of year-round snow patches, can serve as indicators for assessing the impact of global warming on the climate of mountains, including the Tatras. With few meteorological stations to survey the remote and inaccessible high-altitude areas of the Tatra Mountains, any research must rely on measurements spanning limited time periods. Against this background, the 5-year series of temperature measurements from the Kozia Dolinka cirque obtained by the Institute of Geography and Spatial Organization of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IGiPZ PAN) can be used to analyze air temperature patterns on concave and convex terrain forms in the alpine climate zone if compared to the results of measurements from stations of the State Hydrological and Meteorological Service located nearby, i.e. the Kasprowy Wierch HighMountain Meteorological Observatory and the Hala Gąsienicowa Nival Research Station of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management, National Research Institute (IMGW-PIB). This study confirms that there is a relationship between air temperature and the formation and duration of snow cover on concave and convex terrain forms. It also reveals a hitherto unknown fact that concave terrain forms, i.e. postglacial cirques, of the alpine zone have milder thermal conditions in winter than convex terrain forms. The analyses highlight the need for further, more detailed research using modern automated meteorological stations.

Opis:
Kruszewski, Marsz and Zblewski (2003) found out that winter temperature of water in the Norwegian Current indicates quite strong, occurring with a delay, correlations with the air temperature at Spitsbergen, Bjornoya, Hopen and Jan Mayen. Strong and statistically significant correlations between the mean sea surface temperature (SST) in the period January-March in grid 2°x2° [67°N, 10°E] and the monthly temperature of July, August and September with SST are marked the same year (3-5 month delay) and with the air temperature in November and December the following year (18-20 month delay). Waters of the Norwegian Current transport warm, of higher salinity Atlantic waters. Winter SST of the Atlantic Ocean characterizes the heat resources in the deeper layers of waters. SST in grid [67,10] in an indirect way characterizes heat resources carried with the Atlantic waters into the Norwegian Sea and farther to the Arctic together with the West Spitsbergen and Nordcap currents. The aim of this work is to describe the influence caused by changes in heat resources transported to the Arctic with the Norwegian Current on the annual temperature of air in the region of Hopen, Spitsbergen and Jan Mayen. The examined period covers the years of 1982?2002 and is marked by great warming in this area. The analysis of spatial distribution of correlation coefficients justifies Kruszewski and others (2003) hypothesis of mechanism causing the delayed influence of changes in water heat resources on the air temperature in this region The observed positive correlations between winter SST in [67,10] grid and air temperature in July, August and September result in the influence of changing water heat resources on atmospheric circulation noted in these months. Positive correlations in November and December in the following year result from the ?onflow? to the Arctic of warmer and of high salinity Atlantic waters. They have influence on the ice formation on the Greenland and Barents seas thus causing that influence of changing heat resources carried with waters on air temperature is much stronger. The analysis of regression made it possible to establish the correlation between annual air temperature at a given station (Ts) and winter water temperature (Tw) in [67,10] grid. Annual temperature in a year k is a function of two variables: Tw of the same year as the temperature Ts (Tw(k)) and Tw from the preceding year (Tw(k-1)): Ts(k) = A + b . Tw(k) + c . Tw(k-1) Table 3 contains the values of constant term and regression coefficients as well as statistical characteristics of formulas for the analysed stations. Both variables Tw from the year k and the year k-1 explain about 40% of the changeability in mean annual air temperature of the observed 20-year period at the analysed stations. This means that only one element, i.e. heat resource in the waters of the Norwegian Current, defined with the value Tw, determines more than 1/3 of the whole annual changeability in air temperature in the region located from Jan Mayen up to Hopen and from Tromso up to Ny Alesund. The station for which maximum explanation may be applied (47.7%) is Hopen, the station where the positive trend in annual temperature is the highest (+0.090°C/year). The values of regression coefficients b and c prove that the inertial factor connected with advection of the Atlantic waters has greater role in the changeability in mean annual temperature of air. The analysis of formula [2] indicates that great increases and decreases in annual temperature at the discussed stations will be observed in a k year if the values of Tw in two following years are significantly higher or lower than the mean ones. That is why the occurrence of positive trend in value of Tw should be followed by relatively systematic increase in annual air temperature at stations located at the described region. A positive trend in annual air temperature was noted at the analysed stations over the period 1982?2002. At Jan Mayen its value is +0.067 (ą0.028)°C/year (p<0.026). When taking the estimated values of regression coefficients in the multiple regression connecting the annual temperature at Jan Mayen with the value of Tw (Table 1) and the same value of trend T equal to +0.023 then the value of annual trend in air temperature at Jan Mayen influenced by trend Tw equals 0.0598°C/year. The obtained result indicates that the whole or almost whole warming observed at Jan Mayen in the years 1983-2002 may be explained by direct and indirect influence of the increase in the value of Tw over that period.

The thesis presents the analysis of development of selected parameters of microclimate in a standalone cellar plunged into soil. The scope of studies included measurement of air internal and external temperature and relative humidity of internal and external air. The thesis also concerns the analysis of heat exchange of cellar compartments with the surrounding soil. The studies were carried out from July 11, 2012 to July 10, 2013. The analysis of the obtained results of studies proved that the internal air temperature in the examined cellar was mainly formed by the external air temperature as well as by the surrounding soil. For 42% of storage period, the thermal conditions in the cellar plunged into soil were unfavorable which disqualifies the cellar’s purpose for storage of vegetables, e.g. potatoes. Too high temperature was observed in the initial and final period. Favorable storage conditions were experienced only in the period from December 14, 2012 to April 11, 2013. To adjust this kind facility for storage of vegetables, thermal insulation of compartments and installation of cooling units is required.

The installation of an energy-saving facility must be preceded by analysis of its financial effectiveness. Among methods enabling such evaluation is the basic net profit calculation method. For this, the annual consumption of electricity for ventilation or of thermal energy for heating must be determined. The calculation formula uses the sum of energies for temperatures within the range from the calculation temperature for the area in question to the long-term average of the maximum temperature at the site, or to the temperature at which the heating power is zero. It is necessary to know the summary time of occurrence of a given temperature during a year. The site data can only be assessed based on long-term meteorological information. In fact, data used by current national standards to describe climatic conditions in the Czech Republic are from the years 1901 to 1950. The dependence of the average yearly temperature on altitude is shown in Fig. 1 for the 1961 1990 and 1991 2000 periods. It is evident that the average temperatures for the latter period are nearly 0.6 K higher than those for the former period, irrespective of the altitude. In this paper the climatic conditions are assessed based on daily data measured throughout the period from 1 January 1991 to 31 December 2000. Weather stations were selected so as to achieve a uniform coverage and continuity of measurement at each site (as far as possible). All the stations lie in the Czech Republic between 48.8° and 50.8° north latitude at altitudes from 158 m to 1324 m. It was the objective of this examination, based on the meteorological data collected to calculate the average number of days and hours during which the temperature during the year is lower than a specific limiting level, in dependence on the average yearly temperature of the site. Fig. 3 shows the average number of days in a year during which a temperature lower than a selected limiting level occurs, as calculated for the 1991 2000 period. The results are presented for 4 areas with average yearly temperatures of 6 °C 7 °C, 7 °C 8 °C, 8 °C 9 °C, and 9 °C 10 °C, respectively. The graphs enables us to ascertain the number of days during which a heating facility is in operation if the facility is activated by outdoor air temperature decrease to below a specific limiting level. If a typical daily temperature wave is considered, the method makes it possible to estimate the number of hours during which the air temperature is lower than the limiting level chosen. The difference between the data for various limiting levels allows us, for an area with a specific average yearly temperature to ascertain the time of occurrence of outdoor temperature within various ranges. The results of calculations are shown in Fig. 4 and Table 1. The method applied enables underlying data to be prepared for the assessment of energy demands for air heating at a given site and for estimation of the energy savings that could be achieved by installing economical air heating facilities in livestock buildings.

Opis:
This work discusses the influence of changes in SST (sea surface temperature) of the Barents, Norwegian and Greenland seas occurring during winter cooling (January-April) on annual and seasonal air temperatures at Spitsbergen during 1912-2010. It was found that the winter SST of vast seas surrounding the region of Spitsbergen is strongly correlated with annual and winter air temperature at Spitsbergen during the next three years (k, k+1, k+2). The sea areas, where the delayed correlations with air temperature at Spitsbergen are observed, gradually decrease, and the strength of the correlation decreases. The routes of moving current represent the areas where correlations maintain the highest significance (p <0.001) in the year k+2. The sea area, where variability of SST from year k is most strongly correlated with the annual and winter air temperature at Spitsbergen in the next three years (k, k+1, k+2) does not change its position - this is the area lying on the border of the north part of the Norwegian Sea and the west part of the Barents Sea - between Bjornoya and Nordkap. Long-term sea surface temperature changes of vast seas surrounding the region of Spitsbergen regulate the long-term variability of the air temperature on Spitsbergen, and appearing in the course of the annual air temperature trend has his own genesis in changes of resources of the warmth in waters of these seas.

In the paper, the results of field studies using automatic meteorological stations are presented. The studies were conducted in July 2005 - July 2006 in the vertical profile of Natural National Park of Carpathians. The results show that the thermal conditions in the area under research is strongly differentiated. Particularly large differences have been observed between the lowerings of the terrain (where the range of annual air temperature changes reaches almost 70˚C, exceptionally high and exceptionally low temperature occurs often, and thermal inversions are frequently encountered) and the summit region (where the range of annual air temperature changes barely exceeds 50˚C and the mean changes of daily air temperature are consideraly smaller).

This study assessed changes in air temperature and rainfall during the growth of black locusts (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) in urban conditions in the city of Wroclaw based on pointer years. Materials consisted of 54 wooden discs taken from felled straight-trunked trees at a height of 1.3 m from the ground at four sampling sites in the area of a defunct garden established at the turn of the 20th century. Meteorological indicators were calculated based on monthly data obtained from the Wroclaw meteorological station, part of the national atmospheric monitoring network. Tree ring widths were determined using LINTABTM 6 and TSAP-Win software. A set of meteorological elements describing temperature and rainfall conditions during the growth of the black locusts significantly affecting the tree ring widths, were selected using cluster analysis. Pointer years were defined as the years when a unidirectional change (e.g. an increase) in tree ring width compared to a previous year was observed in at least 75% of the trees. In the multiannual period 1955–2014 we found seven pointer years, comprising three positive years (tree ring wider than in the year before): 1986, 1989, 1996, and four negative years (tree ring narrower than in the year before): 1963, 1983, 1990, 1991. The width of the tree rings were formed under the influence of different unique thermal and rainfall systems each year. Within the groups of positive and negative pointer years, individual months differed in the impact of air temperature and rainfall conditions on tree ring widths.

In the analyzed period, NE wind dominates at the Akseloya station and SW wind sub-dominates there whereas at the Calypsobyen station winds from ENE and NW respectively. The average wind speeds at both stations are similar. For all wind directions, outside the SW sector, the air temperature at the Akseloya station is higher than at the Calypsobyen station. The largest temperature differences occur when winds from ESE (4.3 deg) are observed. The presence of visible warming at the Akseloya station during winds from the E-SSE sector should be associated with the phenomenon of foehn winds.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to investigate how industrial pollutants and change of thermal conditions of winter season in the second half of the 20th century affected the basal area increment (BAI) and the climatic signal in the BAI chronologies of Pinus sylvestris and Pinus banksiana. Samples were collected from 21 trees of both species growing in the Chrzanów Forest District (50°20' N, 19°47' E) which is located between the Upper Silesian and Krakow Industrial Regions. Two cores were taken from each tree. Tree−ring widths were measured at the cores and the BAI for each year in the period 1930−2016 was calculated. The growth reductions of both pine species in the years 1951−1970, increasing of diversity of growth reactions from year to year and also reduction of strength of climatic signal in the period 1963−1994 may have been caused by industry pollution. The reduction of wood growth, the increase of the diversity of short−term incremental reactions and also the reduction of strength of the climatic signal were greater in Jack pine. This indicates that Scots pine was more resistant to pollution. As an industrial production declined and environmentally friendly technologies were introduced in the 1990s homogeneity of growth reactions and strength of dependence between BAI and climate parameters in both species increased. A significant increase in the strength of the relationship between January temperature and BAI of Scots pine and Jack pine was observed in the early 2000s. This may suggest that the vegetation season starts already in January in the study area.

Opis:
The paper describes weather conditions (based on air temperature and humidity) in Treurenberg Bay and Massif Olimp (NE Spitsbergen) for the period from 1st August 1899 to 15th August 1900. The hourly data of the meteorological elements under analysis were collected by the Swedish-Russian scientific expedition, which was sent to Spitsbergen in 1899 to measure an arc of the Earth?s meridian. During the expedition two meteorological stations were established (Fig. 1): the main one (21.9 m a.s.l.) located by the sea in Treurenberg Bay (hereafter 'Treurenberg') and a secondary station (408 m a.s.l.) situated on Massif Olimp (hereafter 'Olimp'). The quality of data were checked and assessed as being very good, especially for the Treurenberg station. The air temperature (T) in Treurenberg in the annual march was highest in August (mean monthly T = 2.1°C) and lowest in March (-27.0°C) (Tab. 2, Fig. 2). Mean yearly T was equal to -9.8°C. The values of T in this part of Spitsbergen are significantly lower than in the western coastal part of the island where, for example, the average annual T for the period 1975-2000 was about twice as high (see Przybylak et al. 2004). On the other hand, mean monthly daily T ranges in Treurenberg are greater (Fig. 3). Day-to-day T changes in the annual cycle were greatest in the cold half-year, and lowest in summer (Fig. 4). These changes are lower here than in the western coastal part of Spitsbergen. Mean monthly daily courses of T are clearest from April to September, showing maximum T in the afternoon, and minimum in the early morning hours (Fig. 5). From October to March (but especially during the polar night) the average daily courses were smooth. Air humidity in Treurenberg was characterized using three commonly used variables: water vapor pressure, relative humidity, and saturation deficit. Due to very low T and quite a large thermic continentality of the climate in NE Spitsbergen, water vapor pressure in Treurenberg is lower than in the western coastal part of Spitsbergen. The highest values in Treurenberg occurred in summer (on average about 6 hPa) and the lowest in late winter (below 1 hPa) (Tab. 2, Fig. 6). Generally, similar relations in the annual march are also seen for two other air humidity variables (see Tab. 2, Fig. 6). The annual cycles of day-to-day changes of all humidity variables in Treurenberg are not clear, as they consist of many maximums and minimums (Fig. 7). These changes are lower here than in other parts of Spitsbergen (see Table 15 in Przybylak 1992a). Mean daily courses of relative humidity are smooth for most months. Only in April and in the period from June to September do we see normal daily cycles with lowest values in 'day' hours and highest values in 'night' hours (Fig. 9). The annual course of T in the Olimp station is similar to that occurring in Treurenberg (Figs. 2 and 10). Of course, the upper station was colder, but only by 1oC for mean annual values (Fig. 11). The drop of T in the Treurenberg region - a drop that is lower than is normally observed in the atmosphere (0.6oC/100 m) - was probably caused by measurement errors (the thermograph at the Olimp station was wrapped in thin material in order to stop the snow accumulating around the metallic sensor). Only limited air humidity data were gathered for the Olimp station due to measurement problems of this element in cold half-year. Therefore, most observations were made only in summer, and they show that the relative humidity was in most cases greater here than at the Treurenberg station. The investigation shows that weather conditions in the NE part of Spitsbergen differ significantly from those observed in the western coastal part of the island. Both T and air humidity are significantly lower in the study area, and these differences in the case of T are especially large in winter.

Evaluation of thermal conditions on polar station is the subject of this paper. Calculations based on the Polish Polar Station in Hornsund data at 06, 12 and 18 GMT in the period 1991-2000. Three bio-meteorological indices were analyzed: Wind Chill Index (WCI) according to Siple-Passel formula (1945), Wind Chill Temperature Index (WCTI) based on new American and Canadian formula (2002) and Insulation Predicted (Iclp) according to Burton-Edholm formula (1955). Hypothermic conditions were noticed most often (60-90%) during considered period. Comfortable thermal conditions took below 10% causes per month only. The risk of frostbite of exposed skin could be noticed from November to April from 1% to over 18% causes per moth. The most severe conditions were occurred in February. There is a necessary to use clothes of over 4 clo thermal insulation and wind-protectors for most of considered period. There is also the need for keeping active, covering exposed skin and being ready to short outdoor activities.

The study presents variability of simple circulation indices above Spitsbergen for the period 1899-2004 in January, based on original calendar of synoptic divided from the synoptic maps. After calculation of synoptic types frequencies the further results have been obtained using the simple circulation indices: W - westerly, zonal index, S - southerly - meridional index, C - cyclonicity index, as proposed by R. Murray and R. Lewis (1966) with some modifications, as well as Spitsbergen Oscillation (OS) defined as the standarized pressure difference between Bjornoya and Longyearbyen. The negative value of W index is typical for Spitsbergen, according to great frequency of eastern airflow. Variability of January temperature in Svalbard (t01SV) were investigated on the basis of averages from four stations: Isfjord Radio and Svalbard Lufthavn, as well as from Polish Polar Station in Hornsund Fiord on SW part of Spitsbergen, and from Bjornoya (Bear Island) - about 300 km SSE from Hornsund. After reconstructions of some lack data on the basis of linear regression, temperature data were obtained for the period of 1912-2004. For the temperature the main feature is period of cooling in the years 1912-1918 and then the great warming during the decade of 1930th (1933-1937). During the years 1937-1971 was observed the significant decreasing trend in January temperature to the cool period of years 1962-1971. The last period 1971-2004 has no any trend in temperature. But three large fluctuations took place with warm Januarys of 1972-1974, 1990-1992 and 1999-2001 and cool ones of 1975-1982, 1993-1998 and 2002-2004. Temperature of January changes in Spitsbergen depend on a great extend of circulation factors, mainly from the southern (S) and zonal circulation indices (W) or Spitsbergen Oscillation index (SO). Using the models of multiple regression was possible the recontruction of January temperature since 1899 on the basis of circulation indices. They explained about 63% of variance in temperature.

The values of Oc have been calculated both for a calendar and hydrologic years (May - April) with a formulae given by Marsz (1995). Series of Southern Oscillation indexes (SOI) obtained from CRU has been used to examine correlation between Oc and ENSO. Periods of smaller and greater changes in Oc index were observed to take place one following another in the said period (Fig. 1) and a good proportion of the years was marked by ultraoceanicity. A posotive trend appearing in the series turned to be not statistically significant (Fig. 3). The analysis showed 2-year and 6-year periodiciy in the series of Oc index. Correlation between oceanicity index and mean annual air temperature (Fig. 2) and minimum temperature is characterised by high statistical significance. The fact that most significant correlation occurs in winter may prove that changes in ice condition have great influence on the increase in the frequency of occurrence of fresh sea air masses. The obtained results point to a tendency that the increase in air temperature in the region of the South Shetlands and the northern coast of the Antarctic Peninsula is followed by the increase in the transport of heat from the ocean to the atmosphere, represented by the increase in oceanicity index. At this stage we obtain quite paradoxical picture, i.e. the increase in the transfer of heat from the surface of the ocean should be accompanied by great rise in air temperature in winter, that is in the period when the intensity of heat transfer from the ocean to the atmosphere reaches greatest values. However, the analysis of trends indicated that the greatest rise in temperature was observed in the warmest month and in summer temperatures, that is in the periods when the heat transfer from the ocean to the atmosphere was least intensive. This means, that a possible cause ? effect sequence relating the increase in air temperature to the intensity of ocean influence observed in this area must be more comlicated than it is usually observed. Quite clear correlations may by noted here, although occurring with a long, 2-year time shift between the Oc and SOI. Such a great time shift suggests that the correlation between those variables cannot by governed by direct atmospheric circulation but there must be an in direct inertion linking element that retards the effect of temperature increase. The only possible link of this type ocean. The mechanisms that cause the shift of the maximum increase in the transfer of heat from the ocean to the air in winter to the increase in air temperature in summer are not clear. The co-author research results obtained so far seem to indicate that the mechanism responsible for the shift may be attributed to large scale changes in sea surface temperature reflected in changes in sea ice cover extent and its concentration.

Opis:
The paper describes tendencies in changes of air temperature in Poland and Ukraine on the basis of a long series of measurements made in Warsaw (1779-2000), Cracow (1826-2000), Lviv (1824-2002) and Kiev (1812-2002). Air temperature in these cities in the years 1825-2002 is positively correlated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) Index. Values of the r correlation coefficient are much higher in winter months than during the summer and they decrease with distance from the Atlantic Ocean. Of interest are air temperature changes in Warsaw, Cracow, Lviv and Kiev in the XIXth -XXth centuries together with forecasts until the year 2100. Significant dependence of the climate of Poland and Ukraine on the NAO index stems from similar temperature cycles and the eight-year, eleven-year and one-hundred-year NAO index. Forecast credibility results from the similar periodicity of air temperature, the NAO index and solar activity. The forecast mean annual temperature values for 2001-2100 were obtained from the interference of statistically important temperature cycles, determined by the sinusoidal regression method.

The objective of the work is to determine the periodicity and trends of change in air temperature in Warsaw and in Lviv during the 18th-20thcenturies, together with the forecast for the years 2000-2100. There are interesting diagrams of temporal changes of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) indicator and air temperature, with the forecast reaching the year 2100. The forecasts were obtained on the basis of interpretations of the Sun activity and the NAO indicator cycles, determined with the method of ”regression sinusoids”. The fluctuations of air temperature and North Atlantic Oscillation during winter in Warsaw and in Lviv are closely correlated.

The air temperatures recorded at Warsaw-Okęcie in 1951-2010 were compared with forecasts for the period 1980-2010 and 1991-2010, i.e. 31 and 20 years ahead. Accurate predictions of air temperatures in Warsaw in 1980-2010 were calculated using the cycles identified by applying the sinusoidal regression method to a series of monitoring results obtained in Warsaw between 1779 and 1979. The high accuracy of these forecasts is the result of a similar progression of measured and forecast values over a number of years. The prediction of climate change in the Northern Hemisphere for example, caused by interference of long solar radiation cycles as well as variations in the concentrations of the δ18O oxygen isotope in the Arctic ice cores, requires a larger series of data points.

Subject of the study are changes of the water temperature occurring on the Polish Baltic coast during years 1951-2010 (in Kołobrzeg, due to deficiencies in the data, for the years 1957-2010). It is expressed in the form of a linear trend. The study was based on the monthly average temperature of the sea water in the following stations: Świnoujście, Międzyzdroje, Kołobrzeg, Władysławowo, Hel and Gdynia. For most of analyzed stations an increase in average annual temperature of the water were observed. The largest one was recorded in Gdynia. In Świnoujście there were no significant changes in water temperature except for the slight its drop in June. A significant increase in the water temperature occurred in Międzyzdroje in February, March, April and May; in Kołobrzeg in January and March; in Władysławowo in January, February, March, April and June and in Hel and Gdynia in February, March, April, May, July and August. The greatest changes were in April in Hel and Gdynia.
W większości analizowanych stacji (oprócz Świnoujścia i Kołobrzegu) nastąpił wzrost średniej rocznej temperatury wody. Największy odnotowano w Gdyni, gdzie temperatura wody wzrastała średnio o około 0,02°C rocznie. Istotny statystycznie wzrost temperatury wody nastąpił w Międzyzdrojach w lutym, marcu, kwietniu i maju, w Kołobrzegu w styczniu i marcu, we Władysławowie w styczniu, lutym, marcu, kwietniu i w czerwcu, a w Helu i Gdyni w lutym, marcu, kwietniu, maju, lipcu i sierpniu. Największe zmiany następowały w kwietniu (w Helu i Gdyni powyżej 0,03°C rocznie). W Świnoujściu nie wystąpiły istotne zmiany temperatury wody z wyjątkiem niewielkiego jej spadku w czerwcu.

Estimation of surface temperature using multispectral imagery retrieved from satellite sensors constitutes several problems in terms of accuracy, accessibility, quality and evaluation. In order to obtain accurate results, currently utilized methods rely on removing atmospheric fluctuations in separate spectral windows, applying atmospheric corrections or utilizing additional information related to atmosphere or surface characteristics like atmospheric water vapour content, surface effective emissivity correction or transmittance correction. Obtaining accurate results of estimation is particularly critical for regions with fairly non-uniform distribution of surface effective emissivity and surface characteristics such as coastal zone areas. The paper presents the relationship between retrieved land surface temperature, air temperature, sea surface temperature and vegetation indices (VI) calculated based on remote observations in the coastal zone area. An indirect comparison method between remotely estimated surface temperature and air temperature using LST/VI feature space characteristics in an operational Geographic Information System is also presented.

Średnia dobowa wartość niedosytu wilgotności powietrza zależała od metody obliczania; dotyczy to szczególnie częstości i terminów wykonywania poszczególnych pomiarów meteorologicznych w ciągu doby.
Studies were carried out in three different grassland sites near Bydgoszcz: wet site in fluvial soil in the Vistula River valley (Grabowo), wet periodically dry site in peat-moorsh soil (Frydrychowo) and dry site in mineral-moorsh soil (Prądki), both in the Noteć River valley. Measurements carried out in the dry site in mineral soil (Bydgoszcz) were used for comparison. Vertical distribution and daily course of examined meteorological factors were different in the examined sites. Mean daily water vapour pressure and water vapour pressure deficit calculated from three measurements at 7 a.m., 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. CET differed from those calculated from four measurements, especially in dry sites. It appeared necessary to include also a measurement at 1 a.m. or to use data from automatic stations. Mean daily water vapour pressure deficit depended on adopted calculation method, especially on the frequency and on terms of particular measurements during twenty-four hours. Differentiation of the daily courses of temperature and air humidity and their vertical distribution caused that relationships between water evaporation and mean daily air humidity were different in the examined sites. The values, daily courses and vertical distribution diversity of water vapour pressure deficit resulted in differences of the higrometric coefficient (the ratio of water evaporation to vapour pressure deficit). The coefficient, in the linear relationship, was the lowest in the dry site in mineral soil, and the highest in wet periodically dry one in peat-moorsh soil.

Opis:
Podstawowym celem pracy jest prezentacja metody konstrukcji map charakterystyk temperatury powietrza obszaru Polski przy wykorzystaniu metod GIS. Konstrukcja map klimatycznych technikami GIS-u wymaga dwóch rodzajów danych. Pierwszym z nich są odpowiednie dane klimatyczne, którymi były średnie miesięczne i sezonowe wartości temperatur powietrza z 223 stacji z obszaru Polski i terenów sąsiednich z okresu 1961–2000.
The main objective of the study is the method’s presentation of the construction of air temperature maps for the territory of Poland through the application of contemporary GIS techniques. Construction of climate maps with the application of GIS tools requires 2 types of data. Firstly, there are relevant climatic data i.e. mean monthly and seasonal temperatures from 223 stations from the entire territory of Poland and neighboring areas from the period 1961–2000. Secondly, environmental data allowing spatial representation of the particular climatic component which basically are relief model as well as hydrographic and administrative layers. Decision for the application of the most appropriate spatialisation method was the most difficult in the study. A several spatial interpolation methods have been tested: ordinary kriging, cokriging and residual kriging. The last one – residual kriging – was chosen for the map constructions due to the best verification results. Several geographic parameters, including elevation, latitude, longitude, and distance to the Baltic coast (for stations located within 100 km) were used as predictor variables for air temperature estimation. Finally using the residual kriging method different air temperature maps have been constructed. GIS approach enabled for easy calculation and display of the area with specified thermal conditions and characteristics which can be extremely useful from the practical point of view.

The Weather calendar for the Founding Expedition Hornsund 1957/58 is conceived using four meteorological elements: air temperature, wind speed, precipitation and relative humidity. Each of those variables is classified as system consisting of three classes, except precipitation, which comprises two classes. First class contains values below 25% percentile (under normal), third contains values above 75% percentile (above normal) of meteorological elements under consideration. Second class contains values between first and third class (normal). Precipitation is classified using two-class system, which describes if precipitation occurs or not. These rules give 3 groups, 9 subgroups, 18 classes and 54 types of weather. All statistics are presented for three periods: 12 months from August 1957 to July 1958, polar night and polar day. In all these periods groups of weather with normal temperature (2WOF) dominate. Typical weather subgroups are those of low temperature and weak wind (11OF) as well as normal temperature with weak (21OF) and moderate wind (22OF). Prevailing weather class is cool weather with weak wind and without precipitation (110F). Characteristic attribute of Hornsund area is weather with low humidity (TWO1).

Opis:
W pracy porównano dobowe wartości temperatury powietrza mierzonej w okresie 7 VII 2001 – 13 VIII 2003 roku w Petuniabukta położonej w głębi Billefjorden i Svalbard-Lufthavn leżącym na południowym brzegu Isfjordu. Średnia miesięczna temperatura latem (VI–VIII) jest w Petuniabukta o 1 deg wyższa, a zimą (XI–IV) o około 3 deg niższa niż w Svalbard-Lufthavn. W sezonach zimowych średnie dobowe wartości temperatury w Petuniabukta są przeciętnie o 2–4 deg niższe niż w Svalbard-Lufthavn, a latem o 1–2 deg wyższe.
This work presents values of daily air temperature measured in the period 7th July 2001 – 13th August 2003 in Petuniabukta located inside Billefjorden and in Svalbard-Lufthavn located at the southern coast of Isfjord. Mean monthly temperature in summer (June-August) in Petuniabukta was found to be 1deg higher and in winter (November – April) about 3deg lower than at Svalbard-Lufthavn (Tab.1). During winter seasons mean daily temperatures in Petuniabukta are about 2–4deg lower than at Svalbard-Lufthavn and in summer 1–2deg higher (Fig.6). The transition periods are characterized by great differences in temperatures. At the beginning of autumn, in September, thermal conditions in NE (Skottehytta) and S (Svalbard-Lufthavn) part of Isfjord are similar, later, the shorter the day is, the colder the inside of the Billefjorden becomes. In October the temperature at Skottehytta was already 1deg lower than at Svalbard-Lufthavn. In May 2002 it was 2.1deg warmer at Svalbard-Lufthavn and in 2003 it was 2.6deg warmer at Petuniabukta. Taking into consideration similar ice conditions observed during these two years in May both in the vicinity of the station and in the foreshore of the Isfjord, the observed differences in thermal conditions must be attributed to changes in cloudiness and to advection factor. In individual months significant differences in temperatures are noted at both stations. The greatest differences in temperatures between stations are observed from January to April (Tab.3, Fig.3 and 4). During the analyzed period the strongest correlations were noted in the months of the latter part of the year, i.e. from September to December (r >0.9) and the weakest were found in June (Tab.2, Fig.7). 134

O zmianach klimatu troposfery w rejonie Półwyspu Antarktycznego. Przedstawione badania wykonano w ramach podprogramu "Poznanie i badania Antarktyki" Federalnego Programu Celowego "Ocean Światowy", a także projektu RFFI No 04-05-64681.
Comparison of estimations of trend values, obtained by different methods on the base of CARDS and AARI data set, has shown its consistency. Research reveals: trend error determination for points method is less than in months method and therefore statistical significance of trend can be determined more carefully; points method gives the possibility of getting much smoother trend profiles and this is likelihood; points method estimation results are less sensitive to the time series length. The using of different methods for estimations of the trend values has shown that new presented robust method, based on the using of hourly observed values with provision for correlation dependence in time (points method), presents the possibility to more accurate estimate of trends values in comparison with the traditional approach in trend estimation. This is important for investigation of climate change of Polar Regions of the Earth due difficult weather conditions and weather observations at the regions. The study was supported by Russian Program 'Study and Investigation of Antarctica' and RFBR Project 04-05-64681.

Opis:
Characteristic feature of the air temperature course over the year on the Antarctic is the winter warming known as a Coreless Winter effect (Hann 1909, Marsz 2000). This phenomenon is related to the specific atmospheric circulation, frequent advection of warm air masses from the oceans into the interior of the continent and entering of cyclones onto the Antarctic. The rise in temperature during the winter season occurred in the period 1990-1999 on all selected researched stations, however it didn't become visible every year (Table 2). Analysis of annual courses of air temperature in the particular years in the last decade of 20th century proved, that the occurrence of the Coreless Winters on the Antarctic is a repeated phenomenon, characterized by spatial and temporal variability. An example of annual courses of air temperature with the coreless effect in 1997 on selected stations is shown on Fig. 2. The least number of Antarctic stations with the winter warming were observed in 1992, when the phenomenon was merely recorded on the half of all selected stations (Fig. 3), whereas the greatest extent was stated in 1997, when it occurred on the 88% of all the stations. Extents in the occurrence of the kernlose winters on the Antarctic for the particular years during the decade 1990-1999 are shown on Fig.4. In respect of regional location there was stated the existence of interdependences in the periods in occurrence of the rises in temperature during the winter season within 4 typical regions of the Antarctic according to selected research stations: - on the Antarctic Peninsular - in the interior of the continent - on the coast in zone 030°W - 120°E - on the coast in zone 120°E -120°W The analysis of annual courses of air temperature in the years with coreless effect indicated, that the most often rise in air temperature in the winter season was observed on the stations on the coast in zone 120°E - 120°W of the Antarctic, whereas the most rarely it was noted on the Antarctic Peninsular. The rises in temperature were mostly observed on the whole continent in June which equals 45% of all the warmings noted in years 1990-1999 on every stations, and in July - 33%. The rises in temperature were the most rarely observed in August and occurred merely in 22% of all the warmings. The relative frequency [in %] of occurrence the rises in temperature in the winter season according to month's intervals for the particular regions of the Antarctic in the period 1990-1999 is shown on Fig. 5. The great spatial and temporal variability in occurrence of the Coreless Winters on the Antarctic observed during the last decade of 20th century may prove the existence of the considerable dynamics of the circulation factors, which determine the formation of this phenomenon.

Opis:
Diurnal air temperature ranges (DTR) have been counted based on the monthly mean values of the daily maximal and minimal air temperature from 23 Antarctic stations. DTR shows a considerable spatial differentiation on the Antarctic. The lowest DTR values (4-6°C) occur along the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula and on the subantarctic islands. At the remaining coast of Antarctica the mean DTR vary from 6-7°C to 10°C at the stations situated on higher geographical latitude. In the Antarctic inlands the largest DTR values occur at the highest parts of glacier plateau (8-9°C), while on the South Pole they are distinctly smaller (6°C). In the annual course of DTR the following types have been distinguished: oceanic type at the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula with small DTR in summer (2-4°C) and twice higher in winter; oceanic-continental type at the coast of Eastern Antarctic with large DTR during the whole year; continental-oceanic type with high DTR in summer and still higher (up to 13°C) in winter occurring at Western Antarctic and in the Weddell Sea basin; continental type characteristic for the interior of the continent with the highest DTR in summer (11-12°C) and smaller in winter; polar type with small DTR in summer (to 3°C) and considerable higher in winter (7-8°C). A decrease of DTR occurred on the Antarctic in regions characterized by increasing temperature in the second half of the 20th century, especially on the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, on the coast of Ross Sea and on the Queen Maud Land. The decrease in the DTR values was connected with the quicker increase of daily minimal air temperatures. On the other hand, in the regions where cooling was noted the DTR values increase (inlands of Eastern Antarctic and South Pole, and the Weddell Sea basin), mainly due to the fall in daily minimal air temperatures.

Opis:
This work characterises correlations between air temperatures and the wind directions observed at the Hornsund station over the many-year period 1978-2009. The wind direction most frequently observed at this station is east and it is noted in 38.3% of all observations in June and in 59.4% in March. NE wind prevails (form 5.3% in July to 30.9% in October). When N, NE and E winds are observed then the mean air temperature in the period December- March is lower than -10°C (from -10°C with E winds in December to -13.3°C with NE winds in January). Warmest are S wind (from -2.4°C in December to 4.5°C in August). During the polar day (June -September) the many-year mean monthly air temperatures are positive regardless of wind direction and in the middle of summer they are characterized by similar values: in July from 4.0°C with winds from SW to 5.1°C with NE winds, in August from 3.5°C with N winds to 4.5°C S winds. Winds occurring at the Hornsund station are characterized by high stability of thermal structures. During the cold (November-May) winds from the sector by W, S to SE are 'permanently' warm and winds from the N, NE and E are 'permanently' cold. From November to January the biggest impact on air temperature in the month have winds from the NE and from February to May - easterly winds.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence of day and night meteorological parameters (air temperatures and dew points, relative humidity, wind speed and precipitation) on the radial growth of pine latewood in northern taiga, in typical conditions of its growth. The study was conducted in the north of the Arkhangelsk region (Russia). A total of 63 cores were selected from seven most representative sites. Meteorological parameters were obtained from the WMR 918 H digital weather station (Huger GmbH, Germany), located directly on the study area and operating in monitoring mode. The analysis used meteorological data for the period 2008–2015. Correlation with night and day air temperature in June and July (0.72–0.77) was revealed in blueberry type. In all the stands studied, a reliable correlation with wind speed was established, direct (0.77‒0.88) and inverse (−0.7 to −0.99), but each sample plot had an individual dependence. A reliable correlation with the humidity of August and September (0.64–0.87) and an inverse correlation with precipitation in May and August (−0.63 to −0.75) were established. In general, pine in blueberry, cowberry and pine on swamp types have a similar reaction to the variability of meteorological factors, the most important of which is the temperature regime of air and wind speed.

The projected effect of climate change is the increase of both the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. An attempt has been made to study the extremes in temperature over two regions of India i.e. North-East Region (NER) and West Coast Region (WCR). A detailed analysis indicated that in the NER, ten stations indicate increase in annual extreme minimum but significant at four stations. Post-monsoon season is very predominant where five stations show significant increase. In the WCR, all the stations indicate increasing trend in annual extreme maximum temperature significant at nine stations. Majority of the stations indicate significant increasing trend in all the seasons except monsoon season.

W pracy porównywano wyniki pomiarów średniej tp, maksymalnej tmax i minimalnej tmin temperatury powietrza metodą klasyczną i automatyczną na terenie Obserwatorium Uniwersytetu Przyrodniczego Wrocław-Swojec w okresie 2000-2009. Analizowano ich dobowe wartości. Pomiary standardowe wykonywano za pomocą termometru stacyjnego i termometrów ekstremalnych, umieszczonych w klatce meteorologicznej 2 m ponad powierzchnią gruntu. Średnią dobową tp obliczano z czterech terminów pomiarowych (1, 7, 13, 19 CET), a wartość z godziny 1 w nocy uzyskiwano z termohigrografów dobowych. Największe różnice były równe: +4,4°C (tp), +12,5°C (tmax) i +10,5°C (tmin). Tak duże wartości notowano incydentalnie. Szeregi czasowe różnic nie podlegały sezonowym zmianom, co potwierdziła analiza autokorelacji i autokorelacji cząstkowej. Transformacja danych automatycznych spowodowała zbliżenie skorygowanych średnich dobowych wartości temperatury powietrza do danych klasycznych. Wyraźnie też zwiększyła się częstość występowania różnic w środkowych zakresach wartości.
The study presents the result of a comparison between air thermal parameters measured with standard (manual) and automatic method in the Wroclaw-Swojec Observatory in the period 2000- 2009. Daily values of mean air temperature (tp), maximum (tmax) and minimum (tmin) air temperature were analyzed. Manual measurements were conducted using standard and extreme thermometers placed 2 meters above the ground in a meteorological screen. The average daily values of tp were calculated from four temporal measurements (1, 7, 13, 19 CET); values from 1 a.m. were obtained from daily thermohygrographs. Parallel to standard observations, measurements were performed with the Campbell automatic weather station. Electronic sensor for measuring air temperature (MP 100A Rotronik) was placed in the same screen, in which manual devices were situated. This sensor was programmed to sample every 60 seconds and to record the extreme values of air temperature and the hour they had occurred. Hourly averages from automatic station were calculated from minute measurements and mean daily tp was calculated from hourly values. In most cases, during the period 2000-2009, standard thermometers showed higher temperature than electronic sensors. Mean differences between values from both stations were 0.8°C for tp, 0.9°C for tmax and 1.1°C for tmin. The greatest differences were: 4.4°C (tp), 12.5°C (tmax), 10.5°C (tmin), but so high values occurred incidentally. Time series of differences did not show seasonal changes, chich was confirmed by the analysis of autocorrelation and partial autocorrelation. Transformation of automatic data resulted in much closer adjustment of air temperature values to standard in the comparison with original automatic daily data. Moreover, the frequency of differences in the middle ranges significantly increased.

Zarys treści. W pracy przedstawiono wpływ cyrkulacji atmosferycznej według klasyfikacji T. Niedźwiedzia na warunki termiczne w miesiącach letnich (lipiec i sierpień) w rejonie Bellsundu. Wykorzystano wartości dobowe (średnie, maksymalne i minimalne) temperatury powietrza z wysokości 200 cm n.p.g. ze stacji meteorologicznej w Calypsobyen. Dane pomiarowe pochodzą z sezonów letnich pięciu Wypraw UMCS na Spitsbergen z lat 2006-2009 i 2011. Długość serii pomiarowych w poszczególnych latach była związana z terminami rozpoczęcia i zakoń-czenia wypraw. Ponieważ pomiary wykonywane były w różnych terminach (między pierwszą dekadą czerwca a pierwszą dekadą września) do analizy wykorzystano dane z okresu wspólnego tj. od 1 lipca do 31 sierpnia. Łącznie przeanalizowano dane z 310 dni (po 62 dni z każdego roku).
The paper analyses relationship between atmospheric circulation and air temperature in Calypsobyen Bellsund region (NW Spitsbergen) in period 01st July – 31st August from the years 2006-2009 and 2011. For this purpose data from meteorological station in Calypsobyen (. = 77°33’29,5”N, . = 14°30’46,6”E), daily values of four temperature parameters (mean, maximum, minimum, diurnal temperature range) and daily types of atmospheric circulation for Spitsbergen made by T. Niedźwiedź have been used. The station is located on Calypsostranda, a flat sea terrace, at the height of about 23 m a. s. l., at a distance of 200 m from Bellsund Fjord and 2 km from the Scott Glacier. Dry lichen-moss tundra forms the substrate of the station. Circulation types Ca+Ka (about 20%) and Cc+Bc (about 14%) occurred the most frequently in analysed period. Types Sa+SWa+Wa and Ea+SEa (about 8%) occurred the most rarely. The highest mean daily temperatures were notified in circulation types Ea+SEa and Sa+SWa+Wa. Highest maximum temperatures were notified in circulation types NWc+Nc+NEc and NWa+Na+NEa. Lowest minimum temperatures were notified in circulation types Ca+Ka and Cc+Bc. Highest values of diurnal temperature range were notified in circulation types Sa+SWa+Wa, NWa+Na+NEa and Ea+SEa. In summer seasons air temperature in Calypsobyen depend mainly on direction from which air masses are coming. Local circulation is also important as well as foehn wind effect, radiation and insolation processes. Type of baric situation is mostly not so relevant.

Opis:
The paper presents a research hypothesis assumed that the air temperature affects the amount of the water consumption per capita for household purposes (indoor water use). Investigations were conducted based on daily water meter readings of several rural households located in Mszana Górna and Włostowice (Southern Poland). Owing to the double water consumption metering, it was possible to determine the daily water consumption in households, separately for household purposes and for additional purposes. In the performed analysis, the correlation between the average daily air temperature and daily water consumption per capita was tested. For this purpose, correlation coefficients were determined and a 95% confidence interval was assumed. The obtained results showed lack of a clear dependence between the tested variables. Depending on the household, correlation coefficients indicate the existence of a correlation from slight, by weak to moderate. In addition, it was tested that the growth of the air temperature by 1°C caused an increase of the water consumption per capita in the range of 0.14 dm3•d-1•C-1•°C-1 and 1.17 dm3•d-1•C-1•°C-1 (Mszana Górna) and 0.41 dm3•d-1•C-1•°C-1 and 1.78 dm3•d-1•C-1•°C-1 (Włostowice). It can be concluded that often rapid growth of the water consumption in households in spring and summer season and the term of “water consumption per capita” used in this case, primarily concern greater water demand for additional purposes, not for residents’ household purposes.

Heat waves are defined as at least 3 consecutive days with maximum temperaturę >30°C (Krzyżewska, Wereski 2011). Their course largely depends on the circulation conditions, but local conditions related to the geographic location and surroundings of the station also play an important role. According to the International Panel for Climate Change, heat waves are treated as extreme events (IPCC 2014) that will be longer and more intensive in the future (Meehl, Tebaldi 2004). One of the longest and most intensive heat waves in Central-East Europe occurred in the first half of August 2015. In the Lublin Region, it commenced on 3 August 2015, and lasted continuously for almost two weeks. The objective of the paper is to present the variability of the thermal conditions that occurred in the Lublin Region during an exceptionally strong heat wave in August 2015. The analysis was performed based on data obtained from six stations of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) and seven automatic field stations of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (UMCS).

The recognition of temporal variability of Rn-222 and selected meteorological variables in the urban and rural areas served to create two statistical models for estimation of this radionuclide concentration at 2 m a.g.l. The description of the relationships between the variables for individual months was established on the basis of an exponential function and an exponential function with time derivative of predictor to account for the hysteresis issue. The model with time derivative provided better results. The weakest fitting of modelled data to empirical ones is observed for the winter months. During subsequent seasons, air temperature as well as QG-driven (soil heat flux) models exhibited very high agreement with the empirical data (MBE, RMSE, MAE, and ‘index of agreement’ by Willmott were used to evaluate the models). A restriction in the use of QG for Rn-222 concentration was observed only in winter in the case of snow cover occurrence, which reduces the daily QG variability. The paper discusses periodic climate changes in Europe determined on the basis of dendrochronological data dating back one thousand years. In tree-ring width sequences of trees growing in Poland there are approximately 8-, 11-, 100- and 180- year periods. The tree-ring widths of oaks growing in Poland for the last centuries are characterised, without any significant amplitude, by 8- and 11-year periods (Tab. 1). In turn, chronologies of pine, spruce, larch, oak and fir growing in Europe are characterised by 100- and 180-year periods (Tab. 2). Cycles of dendrochronological variables approximate cycles of air temperature and North Atlantic Oscillation NAO as well as those of solar activity. The forecast of annual growth (ring width) for 2001-2100 was calculated by interference of the tree-ring width cycles determined by the sinusoidal regression method. Because of much longer empirical sequences of specific periods, the credibility of forecasts for treering widths is greater than that for air temperature.

Opis:
This study provides an assessment of the current and future changes (in terms of both direction and value) in air temperature, precipitation, snow, wind and their extremes over the territory of Belarus using information from 42 meteorological stations and 92 regional circulation model (RCM) simulations with the highest available horizontal resolution (EUR-11). Three representative concentration pathway scenarios, namely, RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, are considered. Results demonstrate that in recent decades, temperature has increased over the territory of Belarus by 1.3°C, with the largest increase occurring during the cold season (2.1-2.3°C). Ensemble scenarios project further increases in air temperature in the current century by +0.5-1.5°C, +2.8°C, and +5.2°C under the RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios, with the largest increase during the cold season under the RCP8.5 scenario. The annual means were observed to increase (insignificantly) by 5-7% and the summer precipitation extremes exhibited a 20-25% growth in recent decades. Moreover, dry conditions have intensified in Belarus, particularly during the growing season. Further increases in precipitation of 10-15% across Belarus are projected to occur in all seasons under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios. Simulation models predict greater increases in single day rainfall events compared to their multiday precipitation counterparts. The greatest increases in maximal dry period length (by 1-2) are expected to occur in summer and autumn. The models project the general decrease in snowfall across Belarus to continue into the current century, with a reduction in snow precipitation days of 10-30 days. Despite the reduced wind strength (by 0.9-1.0 m·s -1 ) since the 1970s over the territory of Belarus, the ensemble model reveals slight nonsignificant changes in seasonal and annual wind strengths until the end of the century. Significant changes of 1-3 days under varying directions of the wind regime were observed for days with a strong breeze and storms.

In the late 20th century, warming on the Antarctic Peninsula was most pronounced compared to other parts of Antarctica. However, air temperature showed a significant variability, which has become especially evident in recent decades. Thus, the investigation of air temperature trends on the Antarctic Peninsula is important. This study examines the extreme air temperature at the Ukrainian Antarctic Akademik Vernadsky station, located on Galindez Island, Argentine Islands Archipelago, near the Antarctic Peninsula. For 1951 to 2020, based on the daily air temperature data, the temporal trends of extreme air temperature were analyzed, using 11 extreme temperature indices. Based on linear trend analysis and the Mann-Kendall trend test, the TXn, TNn, TN90p, and TN90p indices showed an upward trend, whereas theFD0, ID0, TN10p, TX10p, and DTR indices showed a downward trend. Among them, annually, FD0, ID0, and TN10p significantly decreased by –0.427 days, –0.452 days, and -0.465%, respectively, whereas TXn and TNn increased by 0.164℃ and 0.201℃, respectively. The indices TXx and TNn showed no statistically significant trends. The average annual difference between TX and TN (index DTR) showed a nonsignificant decreasing trend at –0.029℃ year-1 . Thus, for the period of 1951-2020, the Ukrainian Antarctic Akademik Vernadsky station was subjected to warming.

The content of structural carbohydrates and lignin are important assessment criteria of the feed value of meadow plants. It is affected by many independent factors, including among others its development stage during the harvest as well as climatic conditions, especially the amount of rainfall. During the years 2014-2016, plant samples were harvested at weekly intervals, respectively five times from late April to late May. The effect of harvest date on cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin contents was evaluated. The chemical composition of plants was varied, depending not only on harvest date but also on the year of study. Regardless of the course of meteorological conditions in subsequent growing seasons, the increase of cellulose (from 236.5 to 297.9 g∙kg-1 DM), hemicelluloses (from 159.3 to 210.8 g∙kg-1 DM), and lignin (from 31.5 to 43.1 g∙kg-1 DM) in the following dates of harvest were observed. These parameters were also positively correlated with the total rainfall from the begging of vegetation season to the date of plants sampling (R2 = 0.65, 0.12 and 0.44 for cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin, respectively), and with the average daily air temperature in the moment of harvest (R2 = 0.66, 0.32 and 0.52 for cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin, respectively). The cellulose and lignin content, regardless of the harvest date, were significantly higher in the first year of the study (2014), when moisture conditions for plant development were optimal.

The work presents the relationship between ocean heat transport and atmospheric heat transport from the tropics to the Arctic, known as the Bjerknes compensation (1964). Attention is drawn to the climatic consequences of Bjerknes’ compensation for the areas of Europe. Using the observational data, the validity of this hypothesis is presented regarding the negative correlations between oceanic and atmospheric heat fluxes and positive relationships between ocean heat transport anomalies and the intensity of westerly winds in moderate latitudes.

Opis:
Information about the formation, destruction, and duration of river ice regimes is especially important for hydropower, shipping, fisheries, etc. Research into modern trends in river ice regimes and their spatial and temporal fluctuations is essential, especially in a changing climate. This study examines the trends and fluctuations of air temperature and ice regimes based on series of observations in the Prypiat River basin within Ukraine. Air temperature data from 17 meteorological stations and ice data from 29 water gauges were analyzed. A complex analytical approach involving statistical and graphical methods was employed. The Mann-Kendall statistical test, mass curve, residual mass curve, and combined graphs were used in the study. In the Prypiat River basin within Ukraine, observations of mean monthly air temperature, ice occurrence, freeze-up, and their duration are homogeneous (quasi-homogeneous) and stationary (quasi-stationary). The quasi-homogeneous and quasi-stationary characteristics are explained by the presence in the observation series of only increasing and decreasing phases of long-term cyclical fluctuations, which are incomplete. The trends of air temperature and ice regime correspond strongly, indicating the defining role of air temperature in the formation of ice occurrence and freeze-up. Since the end of the 1990s, the warming phase of air temperature in the autumn-winter period determines the appearance of ice and freeze-up later in the year. In March, the warming trend in air temperature, which began after 1988, determines the freezeup, break-up, and disappearance of ice earlier in the year. Thus, the duration of ice and freeze-up on the rivers has decreased.

The aim of the study was to determine the effect of weather components (air temperature, precipitation) on the growth, yield and the length of the growing season of sweet corn cultivated in eastern Poland. The results come from a field experiment conducted in 2006–2011. Weather conditions in the successive years of the study significantly modified the yield of ears, weight and number of formatted ears, high of plants and the length of the growing season of sweet corn. Good yielding of sweet corn favoured years with moderate air temperatures in July and uniform distribution of precipitation during the growing season. The highest yield of ears was found in 2011, the lowest in the very difficult in terms of weather 2006. The shortest growing season was characterized corn grown in the years 2006 and 2010 with the high air temperatures in July and August, the longest in the years 2009 and 2011, in which the temperatures in the period June-August were the lowest of all the years of research. Irrespective of the year of study, cv ‘Sheba F1’ was formatted eras with higher weight than cv ‘Sweet Nugget F1’.

Opis:
In this work a general characteristics of thermal conditions in Kołobrzeg in the years 1976-2005 is presented. The most important part of the paper is the analysis of extreme temperature days (very frosty, frosty, warm and hot) in relation to the types of atmospheric circulation (according to the classification proposed by Osuchowska-Klein 1978). Daily mean and extreme air temperature data for the weather station in Kołobrzeg were the basis of the paper. The obtained results provide strong evidence that the occurrence of days with extreme air temperatures depends mostly on the atmospheric circulation pattern. Particularly high and low air temperatures in Kołobrzeg, in most cases, are not determined by the character (cyclonic or anticyclonic) of atmospheric circulation, but mainly by the direction of air advection. More detailed analysis has revealed that in the winter months (Dec-Feb) the highest frequency of days with sub-zero maximum temperatures is usually associated with the incursion of continental polar air during anticyclonic circulation types. Conversely, maritime air flow from the Atlantic Ocean most often induced by zonal circulation (especially during cyclonic types over Poland) regularly brings warming in winter. In the warm halfyear (Apr-Sep) strong and persistent advection of the air from the southern or eastern sector (in anticyclonic types: E1, E, D2C and cyclonic ones: F and B) is the most important factor determining the occurrence of warm and hot days in Kołobrzeg. The days with tmax ≥ 25oC appear most rarely during the types accompanied by the winds from the western or northern sector.
Najrzadziej dni z tmax ≥ 25°C towarzyszą typom cyrkulacji sprowadzającym do Polski masy powietrza z sektora północnego i południowo-zachodniego. W półroczu chłodnym występuje większe zróżnicowanie termiczne między poszczególnymi typami cyrkulacji atmosferycznej.

W pracy przestawiono analizę dobowej zmienności temperatury i wilgotności powietrza w okresie wegetacyjnym w dwóch siedliskach w rejonie Bydgoszczy. Wykazano duże zróżnicowanie wartości, przebiegu w ciągu doby i rozkładu pionowego w przyziemnej warstwie atmosfery: temperatury, wilgotności względnej, ciśnienia pary wodnej i niedosytu wilgotności powietrza.
The paper presents analyses of the variability of air temperature and humidity in the growing season at two sites in the Bydgoszcz region. The values, daily course and vertical distribution of air temperature, relative humidity, vapour pressure and vapour pressure deficit were different in the near ground layer of atmosphere. The moisture of soil-water site and plant cover are the reasons of this variability. Daily variability of air temperature and humidity and their vertical distribution are responsible for different relationships between evapotranspiration and vapour pressure deficit in the studied sites.

Opis:
This work deals with correlations between SST in the Norwegian Sea and air temperature at selected stations located in the Atlantic sector of Arctic (Bjornoya, Hornsund, Svalbard-Lufthavn, Ny Alesund and Jan Mayen). The southern and central parts of the Norwegian Sea show the strongest correlation with the air temperature at the above mentioned stations, whereas the northern parts of this sea show weaker correlation. Apart from synchronic correlations (occurring in the same months) asynchronic correlations have been found. The latter are generally much stronger than the synchronic ones. The predominant influence on the changes in air temperature at the stations have the winter SST (JFMA) in the central part of the Norwegian Sea (grid 2° x 2°, 67°N, 010°E). These winter SST show quite strong correlations with monthly air temperature at Bjornoya, Hornsund, Svalbard-Lufthavn and Jan Mayen in July, August and September. At Ny Alesund station the period with statistically significant correlation between the air temperature and the winter SST is limited to September. The strongest correlation can be observed in August (see Table 4). The observed correlations result from modification in atmospheric circulation, caused by increased heat volume in the Norwegian Sea. Such modification is reflected in the increased frequency of occurrence of meridional atmospheric circulation, which is accompanied by the increase in the frequency of air advection from the S to this sector of Arctica. Some correlations which show more significant time shift have also been observed (see Table 5). Winter SST indicate positive correlations with air temperature observed at Bjornoya and Horn-sund in August and September the following year and at Svalbard-Lufthavn in September. At Ny Alesund station the coefficients of correlation with the air temperature in the following year are increased but they do not reach the statistically significant level. Another period with statistically significant correlations is November and December the following year; significant correlations with winter SST occur at Bjornoya (r = 0.71) and all stations located on Spitsbergen (r = 0.57). The correlations of SST with air temperature observed at Jan Mayen the following year are different, i.e. the presence of strong correlations is limited to summer season - July, August and September (r ~ 0.6). The correlations with winter SST occurring in November and December the following year is connected with warm masses carried to this region together with waters with the West Spitsbergen Current. Correlations between SST and air temperature present in summer and at the end of summer the following year may probably be influenced by the modification of atmospheric circulation. The only significant correlation with summer (July and August) SST indicates the temperature of February the following year at stations located on Spitsbergen and Jan Mayen. These correlations are negative (r ~ -0.55 - -0.50). The reason for occurrence of such correlations is not clear. The changeability of winter SST in the central part of the Norwegian Sea explains from 20% (Hornsund) to 32% (Bjornoya) of changeability in annual air temperature at the above mentioned stations in the same year and from 34% (Jan Mayen) to 41% (Hornsund) of changeability in annual air temperature in the following year. The increased level of explanation of changeability in air temperature the following year influenced by winter SST is connected with the delayed flowing of the Atlantic waters to high latitudes carried with the Norwegian Current and the West Spitsbergen Current.

Opis:
Praca analizuje procesy zmian temperatury powietrza w Arktyce Atlantyckiej, jakie zachodziły w czasie współczesnego ocieplenia Arktyki (1980-2009). Analiza wykazała silne, wykazujące znaczne zróżnicowanie regionalne, wzrosty temperatury rocznej i sezonowej. Najsilniejszy wzrost w badanym okresie następował w okresie jesieni i zimy. Najsilniejsze trendy temperatury powietrza jesienią (> 0.15°Crok-1) występują w rejonie północo-zachodniej części Morza Karskiego oraz w rejonie Spitsbergenu. Zimą wartości najsilniejszych trendów przesuwają się ku zachodowi w rejon Spitsbergenu, a same trendy ulegają wzmocnieniu (>0.2°Crok-1).
This work examines processes of changes in air temperature in the Arctic Atlantic which occurred during the contemporary Arctic warming (1980-2009, Fig. 1 and 2). An analysis of annual and seasonal trends has been carried out, as well as, calculations of the annual and seasonal temperature differences between the average of the years 2007, 2008 and 2009, and the average temperatures of the years 1980, 1981 and 1982. The analysis indicated strong, but showing considerable regional variation, increases in annual temperature and seasonal temperature (see Fig. 4 A2, B2, C2,D2 and 5B). The strongest increase in air temperature over the examined period was observed during the autumn and winter (Fig. 4 C2 and D2). The strongest trends of air temperature in autumn (> 0.15°Cyear-1) occur in the north-western part of the Kara Sea (between Franz Josef Land and Northern Land) and in the region of Spitsbergen (see Fig. 4 C1). In winter the strongest trends are moving westward into the region of Spitsbergen (Fig. 4 D1) and the same trends are strengthening (>0.2°Cyear-1). During summer the values of trends are small (+0.04-0.06°Cyear-1) but above the sea area these trends are statistically significant (Fig. 4 B1). In the spring, apart from individual stations, statistically significant trends are not noted (Fig. 4 A1). Over land areas of Eurasia, with the exception of the Scandinavian Peninsula, the temperature trends in all seasons (seasons of the year) are weak and mostly insignificant. Much stronger, and generally statistically significant, trends in temperature (apart from spring) occur over the sea areas, especially those where the Atlantic waters flow freely. Changes in the spatial distribution of trends and their values in the autumn and winter periods indicate that the increase in air temperature is correlated with heat flows from the ocean to the atmosphere. Comparison of seasonal distribution of temperature trends during the contemporary warming trend with a similar distribution, which was observed during the 'Arctic warming in the 30-ties 'of the twentieth century', indicated that the distribution is the same in the Arctic Atlantic in both phases of the Arctic warming. There is no proof of the thesis, so popular in literature, that trends are strongest in the contemporary Arctic warming in spring. Similarly, the regional distribution of air temperature changes occurring during the contemporary warming is the same as that which occurred in the Atlantic Arctic during the Arctic warming 'in the 30-ties of the twentieth century' (see Fig. 6). The Arctic in the 60-ties of the twentieth century experienced the strongest cooling (Fig. 7). The absolute scale of temperature changes and its regional distribution, which occurred in the years 1980-2009 in the Atlantic Arctic, is almost the same as during the warming phase 'of the 30-ties of the twentieth century'. This allows to state that there is no difference between those two phases of warming in this part of the Arctic.

Natomiast w obiekcie, w którym występowało zjawisko efektu szklarniowego w paszarni, zauważono wyraźną tendencję do nawet kilkustopniowego wzrostu wartości temperatury powietrza w południowych częściach hal dla zwierząt.
Forming of the air temperature differentiation in southern and northern parts of livestock objects was estimated in five piggeries situated with longer axis in direction north-south. In four piggeries with full gable walls no improvements of air temperature in rooms situated in northern parts were noted. However, in object, where was the phenomenon of greenhouse effect in the food store, a tendency for even several-degree growth of air temperature value in southern parts of halls for animals there was observed. The profits of the heat from the sun radiation were possible only in building with special helioactive solutions, and the common southern walls did not guarantee any increase of the air temperature in adjoining rooms.

In the paper an attempt was undertaken to verify the forecasting reliability of selected proverbs related to weather in Wrocław. Selected were proverbs, whose reliability are based on the interpretation of easily available meteorological factors such as air temperature and precipitation. This assessment was carried out using two methods. The first classification of weather types was based on actual measurements of mentioned meteorological parameters in the period 1961-2009 and the existing criteria for weather typology. The second interpretation based on subjective feelings of average person according to the existing bioclimatic criteria. Better results were obtained for the proverbs verified on the basis of precipitation sums.

Opis:
The study presents variability of simple circulation indices above Spitsbergen for the period 1951-2002, based on original calendar of synoptic divided from the synoptic maps. After calculation of synoptic types frequencies the further results have been obtained using the simple circulation indices: W - westerly, zonal index, S - southerly - meridional index, C - cyclonicity index, as proposed by R. Murray and R. Lewis (1966) with some modifications. The negative value of W index is typical for Spitsbergen, according to great frequency of eastern airflow. Some complicated relations between above indices, NAO, temperature and precipitation were noticed in Spitsbergen. Variability of temperature and precipitation based on the data from Isfjord Radio and Svalbard Lufthavn stations, as well as from Polish Polar Station in Hornsund Fiord on SW part of Spitsbergen. They were compared with Bjornoya (Bear Island) - about 300 km SSE from Hornsund. For the temperature the main feature is period of cooling in the years 1961-1971 and around 1988, after the great warming during the decade of 1930th. During that coolest years also large annual temperature range was typical. The coldest was year 1968, and the warmest one -1984 (from -2 to -3°C). Next warm years were observed in 1990 and 1999, but in Jan Mayen the warmest was year 2002. The coolest winter (December-February) with average temperature below -20°C in Longyearbyen was in 1962/1963 (-21.5°C) and 1988/1989 (-20.1°C), and the warmest one on 1984/1985 (-8.3°C). Significant warming was noticed only in the warm half-year (V-X) about 1.2K since 1972 up to 2002. The warmest period V-X was in 1990, and coolest - in 1968. In summer (June-August) the temperature varied between 2°C in 1982 and 4.5°C (Hornsund) or 6.1°C (Longyearbyen) in 2002 (the warmest summer). Temperature changes in Spitsbergen depend on a great extend of circulation factors, mainly from the southern (S) and zonal circulation indices (W). The lowest temperatures were observed round the 1965. During the last decade of 1980 the period of little warming is observed again. For precipitation relative large increase of summer and September precipitation were noticed in the last years of the 20th century, mainly in 1994-1997. May be the part of its fallen in the form of snow in the upper parts of archipelago and supplied glaciers. The highest precipitation is typical for August and September. The largest diurnal precipitation totals - 58.3 mm was observed on August 1, 1994. The second high value 52.6 mm was noticed on September 6, 1996. During the observed period since 1978, only 5 time the daily precipitation in Hornsund exceeded 40 mm and 14 time were higher than 30 mm. In Hornsund annual total of precipitation twice exceeded 600 mm, in 1994 and 1996. This increase of precipitation was connected with greater frequency in the intensity of westerly and southerly atmospheric circulation expressed by the zonal and meridional circulation indices and the more intense cyclonic activity in autumn and winter seasons

To increase the level of management efficiency in the agricultural sector of the economy, it is necessary to substantiate environmental protection measures for the restoration and rational use of natural resources, to ensure the implementation of the sustainable environmental management principles, considering the spatio-temporal patterns of changes in climate and bioclimatic potential of the territory. Using the methods of multivariate statistics and time series forecasting, regularities of changes in climatic conditions in the Steppe zone of Ukraine for 1945–2019 were established, and a forecast of changes in the bioclimatic potential of the region until 2030 was made. It was established that during the research period the average annual air temperature increased by 3.5 °C. The amount of annual atmospheric precipitation varied within 186–778 mm with a variation level of 27.2%, in the last 20 years it was determined to decrease by 40% – to 500–300 mm. It has been proven that the inertial probability of repeating hot years is estimated at 0.58, and the possibility of repeating wet years at 0.46. As a result of forecasting, it was determined that if the trend of climatic conditions is maintained, there will be a stable trend-cyclic increase in the average annual air temperature by 0.06 °C per year and a decrease in the amount of annual precipitation by 62.0 mm per year. This resulted in an 18.7% increase in solar radiation on the soil surface and a 26.0% decrease in climatic losses on soil formation, which reduced the rate of the natural ability to reproduce soil fertility. In particular, the bioproductivity of plants decreased by 62.0%, and the probability of its further decrease by 20% is predicted. Over the past 20 years, the coefficient of natural humidification has decreased by 66.4%, and it is predicted to decrease by 20%. The obtained results confirm significant climatic changes and their negative manifestations on the reduction of bioclimatic potential in the Steppe zone of Ukraine, the deterioration of agricultural production conditions, the reduction of harvests, the self-regenerating and self-regulating function of steppe soils.

Variability of air temperature inversions over Cracow in relation to the atmospheric circulationTemperature inversion is a phenomenon in which air temperature increases with altitude. The studies on air temperature inversions in Cracow were based on various data and methods e.g. data from standard and automatic meteorological stations, radiosonde observations, lidar and sodar measurements. They showed the annual and diurnal variability of temperature inversions, but most of them did not investigate the multi-annual trends in the occurrence of temperature inversions. Due to the relationship between meteorological conditions and air quality, it is important to study the multi-annual, annual and diurnal variability of air temperature inversions. The main aim of this article is to determine the multi-annual variability of air temperature inversions in Cracow and its relation to synoptic situation. Moreover, the annual and diurnal variability of temperature inversions is shown. The study is based on data derived from NCEP - NCAR reanalysis and the classification of synoptic situation types by T. Niedźwiedź. In this paper two parameters of inversions are presented – frequency and intensity. The study confirmed that the frequency and intensity of inversions have annual and diurnal variation. Multi-annual changes in the numbers of days with temperature inversion were also observed – a statistically significant increase in the 1000 – 925 hPa layer as well as in the intensity of temperature inversions – a statistically significant increase in the 1000 – 925 hPa, 1000 – 850 hPa and 925 – 850 hPa layers. It was proved that a very strong relationship exists between the days with temperature inversion and the anticyclonic situation, especially with the air-flow from south, south-west and south-east.

Analysis of variations in daily water demand in relationship to meteorological factors, i.e. air temperature and rainfall intensity, was carried out for the city of Wroclaw and the year 2011. 60% of water pumped into the supply system was consumed by households, 22% was used for other communal purposes, while 18% constituted water utilized by the system itself as well as water loss. Studies of the relationship between water demand and meteorological factors were performed for individual months, when the number of residents was almost constant. The relationship, in numbers, between water demand and air temperature (average and maximum) as well as rainfall intensity was estimated separately for working days (including Saturdays) and non-working days (Sundays and holidays). The statistical analysis performed implies strong influence of maximum daily air temperature on daily water demand in summer months (from May until August). Water uptake in May, June and July on days with the highest maximum temperature was higher by 11.8%, 11.1% i 13.3% respectively, than on days with the lowest maximum temperature. A noticeable influence of rainfall intensity on decrease in water demand was identified on working days in June, the warmest and the driest month in the analyzed year.
Przeprowadzono analizę zmian dobowego poboru wody we Wrocławiu w 2011 r. w zależności od czynników meteorologicznych, tj. temperatury powietrza i wysokości opadów atmosferycznych. W dniach o największej temperaturze maksymalnej w maju, czerwcu i lipcu pobór wody był odpowiednio o 11,8%, 11,1% i 13,3% większy niż w dniach o najmniejszej temperaturze maksymalnej w tych miesiącach.

The article analyses the air temperature characteristics of the winter season in Koszalin from 1850 to 2010. The trends of changes have been determined. In addition, the frequency of thermal anomalies has been shown. The thermal classification of Lorenc has been adopted for this study. The relationship between the North Atlantic Oscillation and the air temperature in winter seasons has been estimated.
Z przeprowadzonych badań wyciągnięto następujące wnioski: – Średnia temperatura powietrza w sezonie zimowym w Koszalinie wynosiła -0,7°C i w okresie 1850-2010 ulegała wahaniom od -6,6°C do 3,7°C. W przypadku miesięcy – grudzień i styczeń były najczęściej nadmiernie ciepłe, następnie – w normie i najrzadziej – nadmiernie chłodne.

Opis:
This work has analysed changeability in water surface temperature in sea areas in the direct vicinity of West Spitsbergen. (Fig. 1). The analysis made use of SST (Sea Surface Temperature) from Reynolds?s data, covering mean monthly values of grids 1 x 1° from the period 1982-2002 (21 years). The changes in SST have been examined both monthly and yearly in 48 grids originating from the region 76-80°N, 006-020°E. A noticeable increase in water temperature was noted in the entire analysed area. The highest positive annual trends in water temperature were noted in the region 77-78°N, 006-007°E located west of Spitsbergen. In this area the mean yearly trends in SST values exceed +0.11°C/year and are highly statistically relevant (p<0.001). The values of trend noted in the areas in the direct vicinity of SW coast of Spitsbergen are +0.07°C to +0.08°C/year (at the latitudes 76-78°N). Farther north the values of the trend are remarkably lower, yet they are still highly statistically relevant. At 80°N the SST trend ranges from +0.006°C to +0.013°C and grows when moving west. At 79°N the observed trend of mean yearly value of SST is within the range from +0.04°C (010°E) to +0.07°C/year (006°E). This indicates that the mean yearly temperature of water in the region west of Spitsbergen has increased by more than 2.5°C over the period of the last 21 years and in coastal waters SW of Spitsbergen by about 1.5°C to 1.7°C. The lowest increase in SST was noted in waters at 80°N, where it did not exceed 0.3°C within 21 years. The increase in water temperature is distributed unevenly in time - since 1995 the rate of the increase has been rapidly growing (see Fig. 2). The changes in yearly SST values, as the analysis indicated, are influenced by the changes in temperature noted mainly in the period from September to February. This proves that the heat sources carried by the West Spitsbergen Current are increasing and that the summer warming of waters is becoming more and more significant. Interannual changeability in SST in the remaining months proves to be relatively low, in extreme cases being zero (water completely frozen). It can be observed especially at 80°N. The yearly changeability in values of SST in waters around SE coasts of Spitsbergen (Storfjorden) is mainly influenced by the temperature of waters in autumn (August ? October), which means that the influence of the summer warming of waters on the yearly SST value in this area has increased.

Opis:
The main causes of human heat loss are convection, conduction, radiation and evaporation. Conductive heat loss is so small that it can be considered alongside convective heat loss. The most characteristic factor of heat loss is radiation. As a result of experimental studies, a graph of air temperature in the work area was plotted showing the mobility of air at different heat capacities of the emitter. There was a significant increase in air temperature in the working area during air flows. The research findings can be used to design infrared heating in industrial buildings.

Opis:
It is important to investigate the hydrological consequences of current climate change. Hydrological responses to climate warming and wetter conditions include changes in discharge (frequency, amplitude, and volume). This paper describes current climate change and its impact on hydrological flow within the Horyn River basin. Daily air temperature and precipitation data obtained from the 17 meteorological stations located in and nearby the Horyn River basin, in combination with hydrological data (such as daily water discharges obtained from 9 water gauges), were used for the analysis of climate variability and its hydrological consequences. Analyses of meteorological variables and water discharges are crucial for the assessment of long-term changes in the river regime. Thiessen polygons were used to determine the area of influence of assigned specific meteorological stations, which affect the river’s catchments within the Horyn River basin. As a result of the trend analysis, it was observed that discharge within the Horyn River basin decreased over time. These results were congruent with the trends of precipitation data and air temperature data of the stations determined by the Thiessen polygons and basin boundaries. To understand current changes in the daily flow in the basin, changes in air temperature and precipitation for the period 1991-2020 were compared with the period of the climatic norm (1961-1990). A similar analysis was done for daily water discharges. Increasing air temperature and decreasing precipitation in the current period led to a significant decrease in discharges in the Horyn River basin, especially during the spring flood period.

Opis:
The more important research results on the impact of building development and vegetation on the local climate, conducted in Warsaw in the years 1959-2009 by the Department of Climatology, are presented. Majority of the issues associated with determining the deformation of air temperature limits (urban heat islands), humidity and wind vector areas, because of buildings in housing estates, located in various parts of the city, were resolved in master's thesis. Areas with high building density are characterized by slow cooling and warming pace, especially during the summer months. Spatial changes in the urban heat islands in the east-west direction well describe the latitudinal profiles (W-E) of air temperature differences (∆T ≥ 0) between the city and its urban fringe. The urban heat island ∆T does not appears till 5PM, initially in the Central City District. Spatial diversity of effective temperature and catathermal cooling allowed to mark off in housing estates ( „Stawki”, „Służew nad Dolinką”, „Sady Żoliborskie”) places with perceptible conditions, e.g. heat, warmth, comfort, cold.
